Do you wish to make GNOME the default for future sessions ? If you click yes, all your future logins will default GNOME. You can change this to any other UI you wish by clicking on Session. It looks as if the os does not recollect wha t the Last Session logon was So the problem seems ro stem from the fact that during setup, the preferred UI is set to GNOME, but the Last field was not updated to assign the Last UI to be GNOME and not KDE. this value for Last should be set during the OOBE when the user picks the preferred UI.

The layout could be for exemple as this ( emu10k1 ) : [ALSA] snd-emu10k1 ( recommended ) [OSS] emuk10k1 1°/ This will facilitate translation ( there is only recommended to translate ) and be less confusing ( see #5403 ) as it seems that people seems to not read at all or completly the notice at the top. 2°/ you don't expect that the user will enter by hand the driver module name, if he want to select another one it will go to let me pick another driver, so option menu is more obvious/sensible.

I was confused by this, and wasted hours trying to re-configure the sound system because I thought that the active driver was the one shown in the dropdown field! I expected the current/active driver to be pre-selected, and acted accordingly (wrongly).

I then clicked the Lilo Configure button, then clicked Advanced, and since I didn't know what compact meant, I hit F1 to get help -- and both drakboot windows disappeared. This is repeatable. Then, I decided I wanted to autologin on boot (I had disabled this during installation). So I restarted drakboot (clicked on Boot Config) and clicked the Launch the graphical environment when your system starts checkbox, then clicked OK. It opens the CD-ROM drive and asks Please insert the medium named Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1) on device [/dev/hdc]. I insert the Mandrake 9.1 beta 1 CD in the drive and click OK, and it spits the CD out and asks for it again. I am using beta 1 instead of beta 2 because beta 2 does not activate my network card (separate bug already entered for this). (Beta 1 doesn't activate my sound, and beta 2 does, but connectivity is more important than sound right now.) Just to be complete, I put in the beta 2 CD 1, but it rejected that as well. And when I hit cancel on the dialog asking for the CD, all drakboot windows disappear (I believe it should have returned me to the main drakboot window so I could change this and other options before hitting OK or cancel).

The reason I use two cards is that Mandrake 9.1 wasn't able to recognize the built-in chip (9.2 does, but fails to play sound on it). Now, harddrake does show me two installed sound cards, and I was able to use the buttons to configure the Soundblaster to play sound during a session, but after a reboot, everything went back to mute, and all over again. The trick that made it work (it seems) is to use emu10k driver rather than snd-emu10k which pops in as a default. I even modified my modules.conf by hand to na avail. I know the card works as I dual boot to SuSE 8.2, and YAST2 allows me to select the Soundblaster card only, and ignore the built-in one. Let me know if you need additional info.

However, if after boot, I login as root from the console, logout and then login as non-root user, I can't even start aumix since permission to open /dev/dsp is denied. lr-xr-xr-x1 root root9 Aug 30 17:51 /dev/dsp - sound/dsp To fix this, I ran as root /etc/rc.d/init.d/sound stop which did not unload the sound driver !? I had to run modprobe -vr to unload the sound modules and then run /etc/rc.d/init.d/sound start to reload them. Thereafter, non-root user could run aumix and play sound. However, the permissions of /dev/dsp remained the same. So what is preventing a non-root user from accessing /dev/dsp ?

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5103 --- Additional Comments From 2003-05-09 14:55 --- as for muted volume, this should be fixed with latest initscripts. as for noised sound, run alsamixergui under X11 or alsamixer in a terminal and mute each channel until you find the one that is noisy. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: I have a system using a VIA VT8235 integrated sound chip set and earlier I had it working fine in Mandrake 9.2RC1 but it kept having a problem where Kmix would change the volumes down to 0, and for the longest time seem like it did not work. Once I returned the volumes to their proper positions as I had them when it worked, the system suddenly makes a crackling sound all during any sound playback, even with the ALSA drivers. It can't be a hardware issue, since it works fine in Windows, but I can't figure out why it is doing this just now.
