[Cooker] 7.2 beta2

2000-09-26 Thread Steve Martin

I'm new to this beta testing stuff so I hope this isn't a
silly or repeat question.
Ive been trying to install 7.2 beta 2 onto the second
harddrive on my system but keep getting the error "can't call ask_warn on an
undefined value".
This appears at about the partition table stage (even when
attempting to use the existing partitions)
I havetried both the graphical and text based install
and it also appears when attemting a rescue of the existing mandrake
installation (6.1).

Any ideas?

Try CUPS to make it working for the first time. I have already informed

While trying to install my HP Deskjet 720c I selected lpd as the interface
instead of CUPS. Finally you get a window where you can select the type of
printer you have (remote/local etc). I choose for a local printer, after
that I press the button OK, I get a message that "one package is being
installed" and after that the installation hangs. I try to kill X with
control-alt-backspace which gets me to the shell. If I try to halt or reboot
I get some error messages like "sh: cannot find shutdown" and I have to
reset my system in order to get my computer to the land of the living. If I
try to install without printer support I don't face any irregularities.

 Greetings.

I had the same problem, reported it some time ago. I keep synchronized
to cooker, and miracle : xmms now works as normal user.
So, I suspect a bug fix was commited a few days ago, but don't know
which package configures this.

Re: [Cooker] 7.2 beta2 --/dev/dsp permissions

what are the correct permissions for /dev/dsp?

I also have a problem. I have no [xkg]dm running on my machine. I log on
a virtual console, and then issue a startx most of the time. Everything
is good, and /dev/dsp becomes bertou:audio upon login. However, I
sometimes log off from the console, staying in the X session (nohuped).
Is there a way not to have the ownership of /dev/dsp to go back to root ?

Another thing, the permissions are 640 when owned by root. If it were
660, I could just add me in the audio group and it would be Ok. Is there
some reason for not having the permissions set to 660 ?

Thank you, but my english must be very bad :-)))

On sunsite.uio.no ( same on ftp.sunet.se ) there are two paths:

/pub/Linux/Mandrake-devel/7.2beta/i586/
/pub/Linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker

The path that contains 7.2beta is continuously UPDATED.
Something wrong on theese mirrors?

7.2 is frozen in the way that only new release (no version, except if
really necessary) are done in it. In about two weeks, we gonna go in
deep freeze where no more versions or releases will be allowed except
for release critical bug fixes.

Ok, thank you for clarification
But the problem, for me, is the same. I said that installation does not
work if I have USB enabled from bios. In the last five days I have
downloaded lots of kernels, XFree, cups... Never got the chance to try if
now works.
When, in the day, I can get the full mirror before Mandrake team restart to
upload?
I have ISDN, not cable or ADSL :(

Thank you

Some time owner of the real devices isn't the user, but root (or system,
i can't remember), and audio group doesn't have write perms. So i have
to change them by hand.

I can't trace back such change to a particular config change (mostly due
to my daily frenetic cooker upgrade mania), but if someone could tell me
which scripts are responsible for establishing those perms, i'd like to
have a look. I precise i didn't change my security level, who stays
medium.

alix,

I'm not from the Mandrake team, but you must have somehow missed
noticing the Mandrake/.update_in_progress file being downloaded.

That's plainly telling you that the mirror you are using is still
update-in-progress.

In other words, the frozen beta2 has not yet reached the two primary
mirrors.

Warly (Mandrake Team) tells us the VERSION file of the frozen beta2
contains the string:

Linux-Mandrake Ulysses-Beta2-i586 2910 21:42

So we have to wait for that, or later, to appear on the mirrors.

My /dev/dsp is not linked to anything. Also it stays owned by root even when
I log in as another user. Is that correct? From what I understand from your

the user logs in.

My computer boots up to kdm.
