Nope, just run it again. All removing that dir will do is remove your user
prefs for that user - the prefs that were set to use alsa.

You'll be starting clean again without re-installing xmms

This isn't *really* cooker material, but:
$ mv ~/.xmms ~/.xmms.bad
$ xmms

There isn't much point trying to use alsa output plugins when you're using
oss drivers, so check which sound system you are using, and use the
appropriate output plugin.

Yes, well Kind of ;)

Sound services and ALSA are set to start at boot but ALSA doesn't seem to
start.  When I go to MCC and try to start it manually it simply syas "ALSA
driver isn't running" but it fails to activate it when I press the start
button.

If you need it still, I can reboot and let you know, but it just seems to be a problem
with the kernel modules.

As I just posted to another user who's experiencing problems w/ his
sound in the betas, in my modules.conf, I commented out two of the lines
concerning my sound card and the one that I left in there I had alias
the *real* device driver. Here's how it now reads with regard to sound:

# alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-ymfpci
alias sound-slot-0 ymfpci
# above snd-card-ymfpci snd-pcm-oss

It works and I have sound. If you'd like me to change it to it's
original state and report what the commands you asked for report, let
me know and I'll get that to you.

Thanks,

Puns are little "plays on words" that a certain breed of person loves to
spring on you and then look at you in a certain self-satisfied way to
indicate that he thinks that you must think that he is by far the cleverest
person on Earth now that Benjamin Franklin is dead, when in fact what you
are thinking is that if this person ever ends up in a lifeboat, the other
passengers will hurl him overboard by the end of the first day even if they
have plenty of food and water.

I don't have arts installed but I have libarts, maybe that is my
problem. I will try that out first. Then install emu10k1-tools and run
that program. We will get down to the bothem of this yet. I don't
understand it though as my setup had worked under beta1. In beta2 I hda
to configure it for oss sound. This time around instead of doing a full
install, I humored an upgrade. I don't understand why it would take away
my sound. Well at least not for the cd.

Hey everyone,

I have the identical problem with beta2. I was hoping some fix would be
posted. I've read everything I could on sound issues but don't
understand how to proceed. Things look all right but xmms doesn't play
any sound. To get rid of devfs, I have to rebuild the kernel? is a
kernel without devfs unable to do certain things?

Here's what I could figure you might want.

What output are you using? If spdif, then perhaps

emu-config --digital

or

emu-config --analog

are what you are looking for. The symptoms of the wrong
setting would be as you described (everything looks ok, but
silence).

Well, after booting into a custom 2.4.17 kernel I built from source and
hacking the /etc/modules.conf, I've gotten it to work!

I also had to disable devfs as when enabled, there wasn't any /dev/mixer
which was apparently causing some problems.

So here's what my new /etc/modules.conf looks like:

alias snd-card-ymfpci ymfpci
alias sound-slot-0 ymfpci

I'll try booting back into the stock kernel later and I'll send you the
requested output.

alsa do be the driver?
You do not happen to have emu10k1-tools installed with a strange

You could try to run standard configfile from emu10k1-tools to see

I have a total PCI system and my PnP in bios is disabled. This card
which uses the snd-es1938 module with the 2.4 kernel, hasn't given me
any problems since LM7. The problem turned out to be a -kudzu- update

>1X/2X (rev 5c)
>
>Nothing is being written to /etc/modules.conf

My question is, what is your bios set to as far as Pnp? I had my system set
to PnP 'Yes' because I had an SMC Ultra ISA network card that REFUSED to
work without it.

After doing a little 'dmesg | more' I found an error at the beginning of
bootup that told me 'unable to reserve IRQ 0 for solo-1 audiodrive.'
I did a little deducing, and looked at my irq's (more /proc/interrupts)
and saw a system timer on IRQ 0, and my ISA card at IRQ 5. Hrmmm. So, I
turned PnP to 'no', and reserved IRQ 10 (the correct IRQ for the network
card) and SHABANG! I had sound.

You used to have sound?? What hardware have you added or what changes have
you made? This particular sound card is very picky about its configuration..
the BIOS may be botching it.
Also, if you just upgraded, I've found in the last 3 betas of LM8.0 that the
mixer's volume is set to -0- by default. Interesting, eh??

Also, how come on my latest installation of 8.0 beta 3 the artsd was not
running? On beta 1 it wasn't even installed, it didn't look like. I also
would have appreciated a small hint or two about artsdsp. Luckily I read the
documentation. As soon as I restarted arts, and made sure nothing was using
the sound, XMMS could play through it just fine as well as system
notification sounds ;)

Yes, If I take the last two entries out of /etc/modules.conf and
manually transfer the entries from /tmp/conf.modules, I get sound. I did
a fresh install this morning and the last two entries in modules.conf
weren't there before.

I had a similar problem. In kde my XMMS program and other music programs
would not work. Xmms would load the song and then fast forward through
and I would hear no sound and I noted that the volume control was
always at 0. I deleted the .xmms directory and now sound plays in xmms
correctly. I don't have sound event selected or use them so I haven't
checked this out.

Thanks Ray,

After I tried that, I still did not have any sound events in KDE , even
though sndconfig set it up without a problem. I logged into GNOME and I had
sound events. Went back into KDE no sound, however, when using cdplayer,
there was sound 8-).I did not try using cd player before. It looks like
KDE has a problem with sound and sound events (Based on other psotings)

BTW, I still get the resource busy under harddrake. Maybe the next version
of KDE will have a fix for this
