Yeah but did you get the modeline for that resolution (1280x854)?

The graphical install on a radeon based TiBook should work. I reworked it
while I had Phil's on loan and it uses the XFree driver, rather than
Xpmac. I look at /proc/fb to decide which method to use.

Basically all that's needed for this is the correct Modeline. It's not
in the Installer because nobody has submitted it to Stew as of yet. If
you've got it then please post it here on the list and it'll get
included for the next version.

Re: new install

2002-06-09 Thread Michael Marcucio

my powerbook was bought in january. i have been using mandrake since then
and the only thing that dosen't work correctly is sleep and i am confident
that this will be fixed in time.

the only things you should worry about is video. the new resilution on the
screen is 1280x854 which might cause problems with the default install
(there is option for it yet) but might be as easy to fix as changing one
line in your X config file.

i think the 2 powerbooks have the same ethernet, airport, and soundcard. all
three of these things work fine for me so they should for you. again, video
is my only concern.

good luck and let us know if you take the plunge and if there are any
problems.

Actually install-novideo works for just about everyone. You've got one
of the Radeon Powerbooks which is probably one of the few exceptions.

There is no difference in that portion of the installer code between 8.2b2
and final, so falling back to b2 isn't going to do anything for you. I'll
have to admit I haven't tried a combination like you're describing. Why
don't you let it re-format the swap on hda7? It's most likely trying to
setup 2 swap partitions for the new install, since it found another one.

Otherwise, you could change the partition type of hda7 temporarily to get
around the issue, or disconnect the IDE drive.

Old World with new install on SCSI and existing old LinuxPPC on IDE drive

2002-05-30 Thread SMweixler

Stew,

trying to install 8.2b2 on old world on external SCSI drive. Can boot
all-2.2, proceed with stage 2 and when doing disk partitioning, I do/see
following:

- select sda and generate hfs+swap+native partition
- can format sdaXX (e.g. sda7 which is "/")
- when quitting, installer queries to write partition map to drive and
- always offers hda7 plus sda6 (swap) and sda7 (/), but not other partitions
on hda to format!

- I chooe sda7 (/) only which results in:
**"An error occured swapon(sda6) failed: Invalid argument"***

- I choose sda6 and sda7 which results in or
- I choose none which results in:
**"An error occured swapon(hda7) failed: Invalid argument"***

Also tried to "share" my IDE swap by not allocating a 2nd swap on sda but
also failed.

When I compare both partition maps, I get:

partition sda6hda7
--
-
mount point: swapswap
Device: sda6 hda7
Type: Apple_UNIX_SVR2(0x82) Apple_UNIX_SVR2(0x82)
Name: swapswap

I did allocate sda5 for hfs and sda7 for Type Apple_UNIX_SVR2 (0x83) Name
"LinuxNative", mount point "/"

Seems that installer always gets in trouble with old hdaXX swap partion.

I already passed this point with new 8.2 CDs but failed later after having
copied all packaged.that's why I try with 8.2b2 again..

New install kernel issues

2002-03-25 Thread John C. Tull

Using the new install kernel and all.gz image from Stew's web site, I
receive an error reporting that the /lib/modules.cz-2.4.18-4mdkBOOT
cannot be found. The file is missing in the /lib folder on the image. My
workaround was to copy the older 2.4 kernel module file
(modules.cz-2.4.13-12mdkBOOT) to modules.cz-2.4.18-4mdkBOOT. Sloppy, but
apparently working for now...

This is not an 8 GB issue. If it were you wouldn't be able to boot at
all. I have no idea what that character you typed in there. But you
need to set the boot-device enviornment variable.

ala:
setenv boot-device hd:11,\\:tbxi

in OF. That should fix your boot problem.

That one I'm not sure about but again it has nothing to do with the 8GB
issue and you won't have to repartition your drive to fix it. At least
not for the 8GB problem.

I've got brand new iBook 600Mhz and my partition is over 8gigs.
Yaboot is not starting.

When I run into OF and type boot hd:11,Äyaboot i see linux boot
prompt and linux is starting.

The problem is then with USB daemon, It's falling into some strange
loop and I had to remove it from starting with system.

I'm not going to repartition my drive again ;-(

True, but my iMac supposedly shouldn't fall in this catagory either. I
am quite sure that this is the problem. Especially if it is one of the

Re: New Install

2001-12-08 Thread Aaron Stechesen

Hello Dave!

Likely you are running into the same problem that I had. I am not sure
about all "New World" macs but Quite a few around the era of the first
iMacs have a problems with their Open Firmware that prevents them from
booting anything that is outside the 8 gig barrier.

I have three operating systems on my iMac but the problem was getting
them all to boot. Finally, I found that in order to to boot them all I
had to have everything fall within the first 8gigs. So on my system I
have OS X.1, then pure Darwin, then the yaboot bootloader, and finally
the root partition of Mandrake. I was told that as long as the boot
loader fell within the first eight gigs Mandrake would boot. That did
not work though. The boot loader and the entire root (/)partition MUST
be within the 8GB barrier.

This is a pain, but a fact of life.

Aaron

New Install

2001-12-08 Thread Dave Naylor

Hi

I've just installed Mandrake 8.0 PPC on a new iBook G3 but no matter what
I do I cannot get the thing to boot into Linux. The iBook has a 20 gig
HD. The first partition has Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X on it, then theres the
1MB Bootstrap partition, then "/" "Swap" and "/home". I've tried entering
setenv boot-device hd:10,\\:tbxi but the machine simply boots back into OS
9 or X.

Anyone any idea what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it?

Thanks.
