Listen I don't want to turn this into a political debate al i wanted is help. I am frustrate sure and might have made a slight towards the distro, but don't take it to heart. I am just one person having trouble and asking for help. I don't want anyone else venting here and starting a " linux did this and apple does that fight". If you want to vent and do this bickering go to linuxnewbie and join the bashers their! Sorry but this isn't a politics debate it's a help line. Embarassingly I couldn't quite figure this cooker thing out. I am not very familiar with it. To answer the partitioning from before. hda 6 was my mac partition and is was alloted 8GB (didn't have a choice with this one). It contains OS X.1 and 9.2 (don't like 9.2 but I needed it for my scanner). Then came the bootstrap partition, partition type of Apple_Bootstrap. Then, root partition size varied (ususally 3.4 GB) Partitioned as UNIXSRVR_2 (or however that goes), linux swap (250 GB), finally /home (7+GB) also typed UNIXSERVR_2. Install goes fine (usually) always installed clean. Bootloader always loads and worksexcept with Mandrake. > I > usually try to go the extra mile to help folks out. > > Stew Benedict > > -- > MandrakeSoft OH/TN, USA http://perso.mandrakesoft.com/~sbenedict/ > PPC FAQ: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/PPC/FAQ/ > >

Comments on booting the rescue mode: You do see a yaboot prompt when booting off the cd, right? Also, sys-linux (the x86 cd bootloader) is a lot more developed to this kind of thing. Yaboot, well, it does work. Try hitting tab for a list of images. (Syslinux was designed for this, yaboot was designed for lilo-ish stuff.) I think that there is a serious mindset issue here in the quote I pulled out of the following. > Instaling linux od mac is hard so don't give up and don't worry. It should not be hard, that is why I think there are things like diskdrake being developed. On this issue I will also mention that Mandrake does not seem to have scsi support in the kernel (at least in 8) and I think there were comments about this. Why make things difficult. But I may be able to devote a few GB to mandrake after. Is there a way to avoid this continual problem at install? I may try reinstalling before i install Darwin. > (You can bring up networking in rescue and ftp this stuff to another > machine) > > It sounds like just a typo or something in yaboot.conf, although the > installer should have set it up for you like it does for most everyone > else. Re: Booting Mandrake After install
How do I get it to run rescue from cdrom/cd? I can successfully install Mandrake 8.0 PPC on my Rev.B Bondi iMac and I can get the bootloader installed (yaboot). Yaboot can boot Mac OS, the CDROM, and the Open Firmware but I can never get Linux to boot. I either get Loading Image.(and it never loads) or the error message that it can't find the image. You must check how yaboot config file is looking like. You will find it in /etc dir. Just put Installation CD in cd-rom drive run in rescue mode. Then mount linux partition that you created and type chroot /mount/point bash Then go to /etc and check config file. then check if you have all files it's using in /boot dir. I found that sometimes mandrake is trying to build initrd image and it cannot so it wuould like to use it upon startup. Please check if you have this file, if now just remowe in yaboot config line initr = /boot/initr. For me it worked, because I don;t haveŞ any unusual devices. I am extremely frustrated and getting to wits end with Mandrake in general because of the endless problems I have been having with PPC 8.0 and the horrid PC 8.1 version. Please help me, after three months of frustration I need answers. I so much would like to run Mandrake on both my machines but I really need help getting going on my iMac. (The PC 8.0 runs just fine for me.) Instaling linux od mac is hard so don't give up and don't worry. If you have any wuestions just ask. Martin -- --

Can you: 1) boot the rescue CD 2) tell me something about what /sbin/pdisk -l /dev/hda says 3) If you know what partition you installed linux on, mount it on /mnt/disk in the rescue mode and send: the contents of yaboot.conf ls -l /boot (You can bring up networking in rescue and ftp this stuff to another machine) It sounds like just a typo or something in yaboot.conf, although the installer should have set it up for you like it does for most everyone else. Is /boot a seperate partition (even if it is, we uncovered that issue in the beta and it should be fixed now)?
