Thanks Samuel,

I'm still seeing the slowdown here, but my machine is probably not a good
test case as it's all cookered up right now. Here's a rebuilt mol-kmods
on a clean 8.2 system against 2.4.18-6.1mdk:

Actually, I have observed a mysterious MOL slowdown when the
kernel module did not match the running kernel exactly. I strongly
recommend recompiling the kernel modules.

If the the slowdown doesn't disappear, I would like to hear about it.

Cheers,

They do.
I'll work on that tonight and keep informed.

It's the other way around. mol-kmods is compiled against the kernel. This
type of behavior has been discussed quite a bit lately on the mol list,
and I've seen it come and go with various kernels and machines. Samuel has
done some updates which seem to improve things, but I haven't rolled that
work into a new RPM.

It looks like I neglected to rebuild kmods after the 18-6mdk->18-6.1mdk,
but if you're getting as far as you are I don't think that's the issue.
I just tried here at 24, 15, and 16bpp (ati driver in X), and the startup
is very slow, much longer than you would expect, and much longer than it
was when I had mol running with 2.4.13 at LWE in January. Video response
in MacOS is very slow too.

I also tried using the fbdev driver at 15bpp, but the startup was about
the same.

Aside from the slow startup it seems to be working here, with the
sheep-net networking able to view my netatalk server etc.

I know some folks are running mol successfully, maybe they have some
tricks to share.

You could also try to load an image of MacOS ROM which should work (I use
MacOS 9.1). If you want I can send it to you. This should be added in the
molrc file.

Which version of MacOS do you have ? There is a known problem with
MOL<0.63 and MacOS 9.2.1. Also if you install MacOSX on the same
partition then that is much more difficult -- you must bless the regular
MacOS system folder after everytime that you use OSX, until Samuel
completes OSX support (almost there, apparently). The other question is
what extensions are you trying to load ?? There are some things which MOL
still cannot handle, so try booting with extensions off [press shift
during boot].

If you have managed to get as far as you did then the kernel module
probably should not matter -- but either way I heartily recommend getting
the most recent release as there some significant speedups to window mode
and a new keymapping tool for example. More help to be found on the
mol-user list, which recently switched over to Terra-soft:
http://www.maconlinux.net/lists/index.html

Generally the MOL-in-a-window is much slower than in a console -- try
editting the /etc/molrc for that.
