I have been gone for awhile again. Brice you were trying to help me with the sound when I had to take off. I hope you have some more ideas. I ended up reinstalling mandrake as I botched trying to upgrade X and couldn't get it to run again so I am starting from scratch. I installed the arts packages and the alsa packages. Dippy, Have you tried experimenting with the alsa sound drivers that are on my web page? I can't build those into the distro due to conflicts with the other architectures, but I'm going to try maintaining them personally, as the kernels progress. Some of the newer machines have sound hardware that is not compatible with dmasound or dmasound_awacs, so the alsa drivers are an alternative. I know some other PPC distro's are now using dmasound_pmac, but I haven't had an opportunity to look at how I might patch this into the Mandrake kernel. Stew Benedict I didn't know if I should even mess with the alsa stuff if I couldn't get system bells to work. I couldn't get the xmms stuff to work. I will give it a whirl.

Hi Dippy, No - I don't believe I did. I don't think I had any sound whatsoever. As far as alsa aRts goes, the following RPMs are installed here: libarts2-devel-2.1.2-2mdk arts-2.1.2-2mdk libarts2-2.1.2-2mdk alsa-lib-devel-0.5.10-2mdk alsa-utils-0.5.10-2mdk alsa-lib-0.5.10-2mdk Probably anything w/ -devel you won't need (then again, maybe you will if you need to recompile any sound apps ;). And as for XMMS - the version on the CD is BAD ... get Stew's recompile from the mirrors (should be in Mandrake-devel/cooker/ppc/Mandrake/RPMS/ - just look for a version more recent than yours. See if that gets you going. If not - write back.
