Well, when I was a kid, we had Spam all the time. We opened the can, put
mustard or mayo and maybe a tomato on it in a sandwich. To us, then, it wasn't
bad. I like bologna better, but I sure won't turn Spam down. My husband, on
the other hand, hates it! I haven't had any in years; maybe I'll get a can.

The spam with pineapple sounds good, too.

Same for Treat.

Mac & Chees is very good with some Broccoli floretts mixed in or a few
chunks of ham or ham steak. Spam is a very fatty meat and not so
healthy. I think Ham would be a better choice (IMO).

Two thinly cut pieces, cubed, isn't going to hurt you.

Fry the two pieces of spam, then cube them and mix them in with your
Mac 'N Cheese.

Spam can also go with rice, in sandwiches, or as a garnish for Ramen.
Again, no more than two pieces at a stretch.

If you're doing the rice thing, you can fry it, or top with pineapple
slices and bake at 350 for I think 30 mins.

Fry it, then stir fry with veggies and cooked Ramen noodles, season
with a few pinches of the Ramen packet. (I like the chop suey
mix--cabbage and bean sprouts and carrots, that they carry in the
produce section.)

My favorite is fried, cubed, and mixed with mushrooms and cheese in an
omelet--2 eggs. Of course, with rice. White rice. Haven't quite made
the transition to healthy. Can you tell?

Whatever you do, cook the thing. Don't eat it straight out of the can.
Ick. Tried it that way as a kid, just for kicks. ICK!!!

Spam ... a staple in HI, especially in Asian households. *lol; I'm
from there, and am Filipino, so can, and often do, make fun of myself
and my neighbors*

Re: [CnD] looking for ideas for my supper tonight

2017-08-18 Thread Jude DaShiell via Cookinginthedark
I'd go for the spam myself maybe once a month. Fat is where flavor
lives and anyone who has eaten an almond cookie made with lard knows
what I'm talking about here.
Cutting out fat in diets actually helps increase weight not decrease
weight. New F.D.A. guidelines for food labeling effective as of 2018
support this finding too. Egg beaters hopefully will be discontinued
since it's possible for people to eat eggs seven days a week and no they
don't take cholesterol damage from them either. Guidelines for sugar
are changing too. Added sugar should be no more than 10% of calories
consumed in a day but sugars already in fruits and the like aren't
counted against this 10% limit as they are now.
Finally, calories are in process of going away since calorie counting
even for dieters does not work.
The diet industry has a 3% success rate for people and the success rate
is figured this way. A person goes on a diet say and looses weight.
The test is what is their weight five years after that diet. Only 3% of
the consumers manage to have the same or lower weight they lost in the
diet five years ago. If computers had a 97% failure rate, we wouldn't
be communicating on this internet.

If you are making mac and cheese from real ingredients such as milk,
butter etc. you can always add spices such as black pepper, red pepper
flakes or more herbs such as basil to give it a more italian flavor. You
can do this even with the stuff from the box.
You can add mushrooms, dried or sauteed onions or bell peppers or any
cooked vegie such as sliced almost anything such as summer squash. You can
cutthe spam up and fry it and add it to the mac and cheese. You can use
ham instead of spam or tuna or hot dogs or any other fish or meat. You own
mind and lardor are your boundaries.

What about some of the Mrs. Dash seasonings? They have quite a variety and you
can probably get no salt or low sodium in the Mrs Dash brand. I have what I
call a beef bean chilli recipe and I used to use a packet of tacco seasoning in
it. I need to watch my sodium, so even though I had been getting reduced sodium
in other brands, I found a Mrs Dash tacco seasoning that has no salt and it is
really very good. The lack of sodium does not take away from my recipe at all.

Good luck.

Re: [CnD] Slow Cooker Chicken Pot Pie Stew

2017-08-18 Thread Nicole Massey via Cookinginthedark
The big problem with broth in this recipe is the fluid level. To get it to work
you'd want to simmer it down to far less liquid, otherwise the result would be
a lot more soupy. You could work with it by replacing the bullion with broth
and the canned soup with soup mix powder, but it might require some fiddling.
Another option would be to get bullion from a natural grocer like Whole Foods.
Without it the flavor is probably going to be a bit bland. The only other
option I can think of is to run some canned or cooked chicken through a food
processor to turn it into a paste. You might want to experiment with adding
some poultry seasoning to it as well.

My husband and I were on a diet once. We had this recipe that called for
bouillon but it seemed so salty to us. So what I did was use chicken broth and
I would add to that whatever spices I wanted--can't remember which spices I
added. That gave it some flavor. I'd stir the spices and broth together and
add to the rest of the ingredients. That might be an idea.
