Subject: [CnD] Air Fryer Recommendations?

I am sorry that I am bringing up this topic because I am sure everybody else
is sick of it.

But I am considering buying an air fryer and would like a recommendation. I
can use a good accessible app, but my husband is low vision and does not
want to have to use an app. It is important to him to be able to cook
pieces of chicken, not just thin pieces like wings. We want to be able to
put enough food in it for both of us and not have to do a whole bunch of
batches for dinner. Is this a tall order?

Thanks for any recommendations.

That's how I did bacon when I first started cooking it years ago. I found it
just took way too long that way and I was hungry.

I have a weird way of doing bacon, probably just a touch too greasy.

1. Make sure there are no sighted people watching. This is very important!
2. Cut or pull the pieces in half, almost directly in half.
3. Lay them in the frying pan touching but not overlapping as much as
possible. Fill the pan as full as you can, with the pieces as close
together as possible without them overlapping. This won't be perfect.
4. Fry one side on medium high heat. When done, it will feel like it is
firm when you touch it with the spatula or your fingers and won't feel as
squiggly wiggly. The sizzles will get quieter, more infrequent, and less
dramatic. It will also smell like cooked bacon. Then turn the heat off.
5. Wait till it has cooled a bit, then carefully slide the spatula
underneath, being sure to have the spatula touch all the pieces. Now raise
the whole thing up, making sure you have the whole thing by using your other
hand. flip it, using your other hand as a guide to be sure that the whole
thing is flipping over and that it lands back in the pan.
6. Turn the heat back on to medium high and finish cooking it. The second
side won't take nearly as long as the first one.
7. Put on a plate covered with paper towels. Be sure that the paper towels
don't come anywhere near the burner.
7. Blot with more paper towels on the top.

Now it is ok for the sightlings to come back in the kitchen.

Re: [CnD] Information I got about the most accessible air fryer.

2020-07-07 Thread meward1954--- via Cookinginthedark
There is another thing to consider, though it has nothing to do with
accessibility. Some of the combination toaster oven, convection oven, and air
fryer units have very limited space for air frying, even though they can roast
or bake something quite large. The Cuisinart is like this. You can only air
fry things that are thin, like chicken wings or fries, but you can't air fry
pieces of chicken with the bone in because you can only use the top rack for
air frying, and these foods would hit the top of the oven. So even though this
thing has a high capacity for baking and using the convection feature, the air
frying space is quite limited. Which is sort of too bad, because this and
similar units use knobs. Not those inaccessible dials, but actual old school
knobs. Label friendly, old fashioned knobs!

You don't want the one with buttons and knobs unless you want to use a sighted
person or an app to help you use it each time like Aira or be my eyes, you want
the plus that you can have someone help you label then have a cheat sheet to

Here is information that was sent about different air fryers.

So much to choose from and to figure out which one would be the best and most
accessible!

Jennifer,

Here some of the information listed on Amazon for the Emeril Lagasse Power Air
Fryer Oven 360:

* Emerald 9-in-1 air fryer – replace your countertop convection oven! 5
all-over heating elements mimic a commercial-quality oven for perfect, even
cooking. Most convection ovens only have 3. 12 pre-set cooking functions let
you choose what you want to cook and how: custom toaster oven setting for up to
6 slices of bread, roast a whole turkey, bake desserts, air fry fried chicken,
slow cooking up to 10 hours, roast vegetables, dehydrate jerky and fruit, bake
crisp-crust pizza & more.
* Better than ordinary convection ovens - 360° quick cook technology and
five super powerful heating elements mean your meals cook evenly on all sides
in a whirlwind of super-heated air for crispy, delicious flavors. No added
fats, oils, or unhealthy grease required. Get chef-quality results in one
compact, 1500-watt countertop oven - 40% faster than regular ovens.
* Extra versatile – LCD digital display with 12 cooking functions: air
fry, bake, rotisserie, dehydrate, toast, reheat, roast, broil, bagel, pizza,
slow cook, and Warm/ reheat. Using an air fryer over a traditional deep fryer
can help reduce the number of unhealthy CALORIES you consume by up to 70% while
still letting you enjoy your favorite foods.

The machine has buttons and knobs that control its functions-the LCD digital
display shows the settings.

I looked on Amazon and Walmart for additional air fryers. Here are some options
that may fit your criteria. I have listed the brand, model, size, price, and
some of the information from the listing. I would highly recommend you verify
with the company if the machine has tactile buttons; not all of the
descriptions for the air fryers specifically state if the machines had buttons.
I used the pictures provided and the air fryers in the pictures appear to have
raised buttons but I could be incorrect.

Option 1: PowerXL Vortex Air Fryer Plus 5-Quart, $79.99 on Walmart

*6-in-1 Multi-Use Design: Air Fryer, Dehydrator, Pizza Oven, Baking
Oven, Roaster, Reheat

7. Put on a plate covered with paper towels. Be sure that the paper towels
don't come anywhere near the burner.
7. Blot with more paper towels on the top.

Now it is ok for the sightlings to come back in the kitchen.

1 apple (peeled and chunked, I used a Granny Smith)

1 1/2 cups crushed ice

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup

I don’t use syrup.

I use 1 packet of estivia in the raw.

Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree.

Top with cinnamon and a few diced apple pieces.

NOTES

For best results, make sure to peel and core the apple thoroughly.

You will get the best smoothie texture if you blend until completely smooth and
creamy.

Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a few leftover diced apple pieces (use
a little lemon juice to keep them from getting brown). I like to leave the skin
on that section of apple to get a nice pop of color in the smoothie!

If your smoothie isn’t thick enough after blending, add some additional yogurt
and ice and blend again.

Sorry no nutrition facts.

I just made this up with a friend.

We enjoy it as a snack from time to time.

I purchased an Emeril Lagasse air fryer pro 360+ which is all buttons and I
have not received it yet but I do know I can label it with bump dots and be
able to use it as long as I have a cheat sheet of the buttons. Do not get the
as seen on tv model though, make sure it's the plus. The other one has dials
and buttons but the dials are not accessible at all because they rely on a
digital read out on the unit and it changes which each dial rotation and
there's no stop or start point on the dial so you never know where you are.

I have not looked at air fryers lately. My experience in the past has been:
If it has knobs that turn they probably will not be accessible but could be.
If they have buttons that look like little bubbles they will probably be
completely accessible as long as you write down what each button does and keep
the cheat sheet handy.
Most of the multi-purpose air fryers do not have accessible dials but some can
be programmed to work with Amazon or Google assistants.
I have a Nuwave oven that is one of the oldest air fryers around, but works
well enough to meet my needs. I don't even know if that is available anymore.
Further than that I don't have enough knowledge to answer your question.

I cook bacon in the microwave all the time. Each microwave oven is different
though and it takes some experimentation to figure out exactly how much time to
cook it in yours. You have two problems, how long your oven takes and how
thinly or thickly sliced your bacon is. A third factor is your own individual
taste for bacon. Some like it so crisp it is starting to burn just a little.
Others like it still limp but just cooked through. Most people like it
somewhere between the two states.
Try a couple pieces for 2 minutes. Was it done enough? Was it burnt? Did it
need more cooking? Act accordingly to find out what changes to make. Good luck.

I have a weird way of doing bacon, probably just a touch too greasy.

1. Make sure there are no sighted people watching. This is very important!
2. Cut or pull the pieces in half, almost directly in half.
3. Lay them in the frying pan touching but not overlapping as much as
possible. Fill the pan as full as you can, with the pieces as close together
as possible without them overlapping. This won't be perfect.
4. Fry one side on medium high heat. When done, it will feel like it is firm
when you touch it with the spatula or your fingers and won't feel as squiggly
wiggly. The sizzles will get quieter, more infrequent, and less dramatic. It
will also smell like cooked bacon. Then turn the heat off.
5. Wait till it has cooled a bit, then carefully slide the spatula underneath,
being sure to have the spatula touch all the pieces. Now raise the whole thing
up, making sure you have the whole thing by using your other
hand. flip it, using your other hand as a guide to be sure that the whole
thing is flipping over and that it lands back in the pan.

This might be a stupid question given the information here but do I need to
check it with and meat thermometer to be able to determine when it’s done I
just don’t wanna get sick if for some reason the pork is not cooked all the way
through in the microwave that’s why I’m asking but if you don’t have to use a
meat thermometer that’s all the better

If I want the bacon to be softer, like for sandwiches with tomatoes and
lettuce, I often use a lower power. If I want it crispy for whatever reason I
cook it on full power. I never use the precooked bacon or turkey bacon unless I
am having company who uses it at home and I know their preference to do so.

Pamela, Do you use full power for bacon? My microwave is 1200 watts. Often, I
find it does better on, say, 60%. The precooked bacon does ok at full power,
because it is such a short time.

Good luck.

Re: [CnD] Another air dry cookbook

2020-07-07 Thread meward1954--- via Cookinginthedark
Hello, I'm new to the list. I'm a blind cook and have been cooking
independently for 43 years but had some lessons before that. I enjoy making
yeast breads as a way to control stress. Even though I grew up on the old
1950s and 1960s meat and potatoes fare, I have now started sprouting. I know
that I need to eat more vegetables, and growing them in my kitchen makes
them much more interesting.

My biggest cooking problem areas are measuring small amounts of liquid,
getting things properly turned over in a frying pan, and knowing when meat
is done. I know these are typical blind cook problems.

Glad to be on this list.

I used to cook mine in the microwave but now I use a roasting pan with a rack
and cook in the oven. I set my temperature to 375 for thick sliced bacon and
cook it for about 25 minutes. It comes out crisp but not burnt.
