[Coworking] Coworking Visa: Add your space to the list of participants!

2011-10-18 Thread Will Bennis, Locus Workspace
Hey All,

Just a reminder for new space owners who may not have heard about it
or gotten around to it: Don't forget about the Coworking Visa!

Being a member adds value to your own space and to all Visa member
spaces!

Here are the details from the coworking wiki page where you can add
your space (http://wiki.coworking.info/w/page/16583744/CoworkingVisa):

What is it?

A coworking visa allows active members of one space to use other
coworking spaces around the world for free for a set number of days (3
is the default).
Terms vary from space to space with regard to hours of operation, how
many days are offered, reservation requirements, etc., so be sure to
check the Visa terms for the space you want to visit.

There are more than 200 participating spaces, including more than 100
in the U.S. and more than 100 in other countries around the world, and
the list continues to grow.

Space owners can participate simply by adding their space below along
with their particular visa guidelines. (You need to create a PBworks
account to edit this wiki.)
If your own coworking space isn't listed, ask the owner or manager to
join the list (they may just not know about it or not have gotten
around to it)!

[Coworking] For the love of coworking

2011-10-18 Thread Alexa Roman
Hello Coworking Community!

We are Gina Hermosillo and Alexa Roman, coworking advocates working
and living in Los Angeles.  We're new to the board and wanted to say a
quick hello.

We both come from a set design and filmmaking background and are
active in communities that work and play with the realms of dance,
art, film, theater, crafts, and poetry.  While there are working
artists able to afford their own studios, we noticed a growing number
of us searching for a flexible studio to practice.

From holding needlepoint classes to practicing choreography, we have
seen and experienced the frustration that comes from needing (and not
finding) a flexible space and supportive community to call your
part-time home.

In short (or long), we want to bring your ideas and the concept of
coworking to the arts!  We want to provide studio space on coworking
terms, fostering community and collaboration in the same ways that all
of your spaces currently do...but with the ability to get paint on the
floor or hold a dance class.

We are amazed at this community and its support, guidance and
resources.  Alex - I'm attending your workshop later this month,
Angel/Beth - we've read your eBooks...and we are hoping to get more
involved in everything you are doing.

We are not quite ready to open a space so, on the advice of this
group, we are building community through a few events this fall in
conjunction with an existing artist shared studio in downtown LA.  We
will continue to search for ways to participate in the coworking
movement.  Please let us know if you know of existing communities that
are in the same vein of what we are doing - we would love any feedback
or guidance.

With gratitude and excitement,

Alexa Roman and Gina Hermosillo

[Coworking] Re: Dallas/Ft. Worth coworking - Why not?

2011-10-18 Thread Texrat
I'm sure glad I stumbled onto this group!

I live in the DFW area and have just started exploring the startup of
a coworking operation. I'm using the name Cocoa Labs
(www.cocoalabs.net-- nothing there yet).

I'm encouraged and discouraged at the same time to see I was beaten to
the punch. I really thought some of my ideas were unique but then see
that cohabitat Dallas has already employed most of them!

My partner and I in fact just spent today driving around Centreport
(360 and Trinity Blvd) and it looks close to ideal. Hotels,
apartments, delis and many large businesses in the area... plus the
TRE station and bus service, as well as DFW airport nearby. I'd
prefer building from scratch, since finding the right sort of existing
building would be difficult.

I'm going to continue development, but now I'm concerned about finding
funding...

[Coworking] Coworking in Petaluma CA

2011-10-18 Thread Kate@CO2
Hello all! I've been poking around here for the last couple months,
and finally joined and am staking my ground, as it were. I have done
some preliminary research on the coworking market in the Bay Area, and
find that while there are a lot of lovely spaces in San Fran and the
East Bay, there is no such community here in the North Bay. As a
freelancer with a lot of independent friends and acquaintances who
don't want to commute into the city, I believe this could work well
here, both as a community and as a business. This town has a
population of 55,000, with other neighboring towns that might join in
as well (20 minutes north there is a 100K plus city, an even longer
commute from SF). I want to start working on a business plan to secure
funding, but I'm partly not sure who to look at as a model -- the big
spaces in the big city are much larger than we'd be...

If anyone has any advice or direction for me, I'd love to hear it.

Thank you!

[Coworking] THE ACTION FACTORY LA looking for help and advice

2011-10-18 Thread dbaptiste - The Action Factory LA
Hello Everyone,

This group is so exciting. I am glad that I found it. I am doing a
little research before I really pull the plug on a great CO-WORKING
COMMUNITY called, "THE ACTION FACTORY LA" (El Segundo) it is a huge
leap of faith for me, but I believe that during these times, co
working communities need to be sprouting all over Los Angeles.

I have been working with New York City in NYC and they have pointed me
in the right direction, but what I need to hear from fellow Angelenos
is having a working Co Working Community in the El Segundo Area going
to draw the audience to make this space work.

The idea is to have a desk "bullpen" style area, but also make the
3,000 Sq. Ft. Studio space available for photo shoots, small video
productions, etc.

So if anyone has any advise for me please let me know.

We are beginning our journey February 1, 2012.

[Coworking] East San Fernando Valley coworking

2011-10-18 Thread watsontcbc
My name is Tom, and I'm looking into starting up a coworking space in
east San Ferrnando Valley, specifically Burbank. I gotta believe
there's people at this end of the valley that need a place to work
that's not at home. If you are interested in coworking in Burbank,
please respond to this post to let me know. I do have a candidate
place that someone has made available that might be a good start
that's on the northern-most end of Burbank on San Fernando road. I'd
like to know if a location up there would work for you or not, and if
not, what area or even specific location you'd suggest. I'd also like
to know what features you'd like to see in a coworking place here -
like what would work for you initially, or even what would be ideal
for you. If you have experince with coworking places and have
suggestions or advice, I'd appreciate that too. I have a page on the

[Coworking] Gay coworking space

2011-10-18 Thread Simon Soho Collective
Just wanted to know what people thought of gay or gay-friendly
coworking spaces. We have a space called The Soho Collective in the
middle of Soho in London, which is the gay area and I suppose it's
only natural that a higher-than-average percentage of our guys are
gay. And we've found it's been a plus: gay people feel comfortable and
able to communicate openly, and we only want gay-friendly people
around anyway, so it's sort of set the tone. I just wondered if anyone
thought a designated gay coworking space would work or whether we've
got it right letting it happen organically. Your comments please.

[Coworking] coworking space London

2011-10-18 Thread The Office
Hi all,

We hope you're well.

We just wanted to let you know about The Club. It’s designed for
individuals who need somewhere to work from but (like most of us)
aren’t planning on being there the whole time. It consists of a number
of open, semi-private and private spaces for different types of
working and it’s backed up with meeting rooms all over London and a
series of events for sharing knowledge and skills amongst our like-
minded members.

So if you're running around London trying to find a decent coffee and
a plug-point why not swing by for a few hours and get some work done.

The Space
Different work requires different workspace. Open areas provide a
chance to meet others, carrels give you a bit more privacy and if you
need to lock yourself away for a bit, there are focus booths too. If
you’re taking a call, there are phone booths throughout so you don’t
need to share it with the world.

The Wireless
Our robust, super-fast wireless allows you to work from The Cloud,
Skype and send large files without giving you enough time to make a
coffee while you wait. There’s power, laptop anchor points and lockers
throughout, printing and scanning, showers and an apartment if you
need to stay over.

The Meetings
Boardrooms, ideas rooms, presentation rooms and talk rooms. All for
2-40 people and with all the technology you need for your meeting to
run smoothly. There are 12 at Warnford Court and a further 35 across
London. If it’s informal, you’re welcome to bring a guest into the
club space for a chat.See the meeting rooms.

The Business Needs
Use us as your business address. We can handle your mail and calls if
you’d like us to. Bring clients to the space or the meeting rooms and
if you eventually need a full time office, we have a range of
dedicated spaces both at Warnford Court and our other buildings. Your
membership can easily be transferred.

The Social Needs
Meet like-minded members around the space, at our regular networking
events, workshops and talks. Find inspiration, share skills and
possibly discover new clients. We’re also working on an intranet to
keep members in the loop even if they’re not in the space.

Looking forward to meeting you,

The Office.

Alexa,

Welcome, thanks for the introduction! Happy to have you joining my workshop
in a few days.

One thing I have to say is very, very interesting: my partner Geoff and I
actually drew LOTS of inspiration from his experiences with arts collectives
both in terms of what works as well as learning what doesn't and designing
improvements to those problems into our business and community models. I
love that our work is making it full circle!

and your crew. Next time you see him, can you give him a high five for me?

:)

Great to hear from you, welcome!

Re: [Coworking] Can someone help me find the "files" section of this group?

2011-10-18 Thread Alex Hillman
I'm pretty sure that Google decommissioned this feature from Google Groups.
Jacob, do you know what the deal is?

Re: [Coworking] Gay coworking space

2011-10-18 Thread Alex Hillman
It sounds to me like an awesome example of organic growth. A lot of the
kinds of "identity" concerns you have require trust between members, and
that's 100% the case in *any* coworking space, gay straight or otherwise.

The strongest communities I've seen around the world, regardless of their
specific identity, consistently make it a point for people to be learn to
trust one another. If you got that part right, everything else is easy :)
