Well, hi there! I think you are certainly in the right place. For your local collaboration with the other coworking space, I would myself probably just go over there and say hi. [Coworking] Re: Who's shopping for electronic door locks?
Hi Jacob, We have standardized on Paxton, and we're very happy with them. We're using a battery powered and wifi enabled lock on every office and conference room door. Easy to install without wiring to each door (except outside doors, which are wired). These units have the scanner built into the door handle, so when we leave a place, we can just put the old handles back on and take the Paxton scanner/locks with us. We've brought our costs down on these systems to about ⅓ of our original costs. We'll shortly be tying them into our software, DeskWorks, for automatic posting of charges. Our Center Coordinators now start the day (takes about 5 minutes) to post any charges from the day before for anyone who has a less than full-time plan. Really expands the available market! [Coworking] Re: Inside The Phenomenal Rise Of WeWork
Tim: I did a blog post on this http://www.smallbizlabs.com/2014/11/the-rise-of-wework-coworking.html today. Our view is overall this is very good news for the entire coworking industry. WeWork is showing coworking is rapidly becoming a mainstream workplace alternative for startups, independent workers and firms of all sizes. The more broadly this is recognized and reported on in the press, the better it is for the overall industry. We also think there's plenty of room for other players. Even with their aggressive growth plans, WeWork is only aiming for 46,000 members in 2015. This is a tiny share of the potential coworking market. There are many millions of potential coworking space members and most are looking for spaces offering something different than WeWork is. But - and this is a big but - just as big box retail fundamentally changed that sector, we think Big Coworking (spaces with many hundreds of members) will also have a major impact on coworking and broader office-as-a-service industry. Smaller spaces and firms will have to learn to adjust to Big Coworking competition. I wrote this in 2011, but my thoughts haven’t changed much: http://dangerouslyawesome.com/2011/11/sex-coworking-and-rock-n-roll/ WeWork is tiny compared to Regus (who employs nearly 1/4 of the headcount that WeWork is aiming for as membership in 2015). And yet we laugh at considering Regus a coworking competitor. Further, viewing communities as “competitive only makes sense in a vacuum. In reality, people choose what suits them. Using the analogy in that post, music artists don’t “compete” directly with each other. And to use the restaurant analogy from previous posts, a chinese food restaurant doesn’t “compete directly with a steakhouse, even though they technically serve some of the same ingredients. Point being: catch yourselves when huge numbers and eye-popping statistics become a distraction from what YOU need to do best, which is support and lead YOUR communities. -Alex -- The #1 mistake in community building is doing it by yourself. Re: [Coworking] Re: Inside The Phenomenal Rise Of WeWork
This is awesome. And Alex, I love the restaurant analogy. Reminds me of how I and many friends wrung our hands when Whole Foods moved into Minneapolis about 15 years ago, just a couple miles from our beloved Wedge http://www.wedge.coop/ food coop. As it turned out, rather than taking business away from the food coops, Whole Foods mostly served as a gateway drug for suburbanites to try organics, bringing lots of newbies into a rapidly growing market. Today, the Wedge is one of the largest food coops in the country by both membership and sales. [Coworking] LAB B's Crowdfunding Campaign
Hi all, First off, I would like to thank* this awesome community *for the help, insights and motivation that LAB B has received from all of you. I want to invite you to check out LAB B's crowdfunding campaign that we recently launched! *Why?* On October 2nd, 2014, we were served a cease and desist letter by the owner of the building in which LAB•B was located. The letter asked us to stop doing business in the building; however, the reason that was given was inaccurate. After discussion with lawyers, we were assured that LAB•B had not violated any terms of the lease and had been clear at the outset that coworking was one of the purposes of the space. Still, it became clear to us that there was no way we could grow and thrive in an environment that would have us constantly walking on eggshells with a landlord who doesn’t understand. However, there is a plan: we have found a location in the heart of downtown Brampton. For more information on our new location, how the money that we raise will be spent and the full story, visit our campaign page: http://igg.me/p/lab-b-coworking-a-new-home-for-our-community/x/8919533 *How can you help?* 1. Contribute to this campaign and enjoy your awesome perks! Crowdfunding campaigns that raise 30% of their funding goal are most likely to be successful http://www.fundable.com/crowdfunding101/crowdfunding-statistics. 2. *Share this campaign* with your friends, family, and everyone you have ever known. Share the video, tweet the link and send it to your community members. 3. Please offer any suggestions or comments to improve the page, people to reach out to and anything else that would be helpful. I am sure that you have questions about what is going on so please reach out. I know some spaces use the method of self-selecting - ie: anyone can join and those who don't fit eventually phase out. And I can see the merits of that. However, we still find that having an application process works well for us. We have everyone fill out an application and on their space tour we let them know that we are looking for good personality fit, similar work styles, community/coworker expectations and we try and have a wide diversity of businesses. We stress we are a boutique space so we are small and therefore all of these factors are even more important in choosing members. We cringe a little at all of this because it does sound elitist, but to be honest almost everyone gets in who wants to be in and those that don't fit actually realize it themselves on their first visit and don't pursue membership. However, there are a few who don't and I am wondering how others turn down these people who you know just aren't going to fit, but do it in a way that is polite and considerate. We find the conversation is just awkward! However it's necessary as we have found in the past, ignoring our gut instinct and having them become members isn't very nice in the long run either ... ~Erynn -- -- Erynn Lyster The Commons Calgary a cowork apothecary www.thecommonscalgary.com (403) 399-1716 (cell) or (403) 452-7938 (office) -- Visit this forum on the web at http://discuss.coworking.com --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. For connections and development and so on, we do have a list on the WIki of coworking mentors http://wiki.coworking.org/w/page/16583959/SpaceOwnerand another one here http://wiki.coworking.org/w/page/16583958/SpaceCatalyst you might want to check out. (And the rest of you might like to add yourselves if you feel inspired), I would start there. And don't hesitate to call on me if you need anything else, this email address or Jeannine @ Opencoworking.org Cheers, Jeannine On Sunday, November 16, 2014 8:00:32 AM UTC+1, NODO Cowork wrote: Also, I started having like a aliance with other spaces in mexico. So if you work from NODO you can go to some other places to work also. But this is not really like making community but like building a service with a plus. I am interested in starting collaborating between coworkers from here with coworkers from any other part of the world. This is also a collaboration between spaces. I am sure that somebody has come up with this before but what we were thinking about is, we are having this event with programers and internet and web and all that. It is a coworking fun day and end up with short internet talks and after that a networking event. I would like to invite somebody of a coworking space anywere in the world that wants to talk about any subject related to web/collaboration/technology for us on that day. Have you ever done something like this before? I know that the community in Merida wants to listen to what is going on in Australia, United States, Japan. what is their point of view on different subjects? We are willing to start this local and external colaboration but I don´t know how to approach (specially the local ones)... Any guidance here?
