[Coworking] Re: Coworking Incubators | Western Arizona

2010-03-11 Thread apruitt
Derek: I would like to participate in any local (AZ) F2F about this
topic after SXSW.

I have visited Gangplank HQ twice now and I would like to continue
with any conversations about this topic.

I have gathered enough broad-based support in my community (Greater
Yuma AZ) to move forward with next steps and this specific topic is
near-and-dear to me.

BTW - I just finished Gina Trapani (excellent) Complete Guide to
Google Wave (online version) and I am looking to employing Google
Wave as an online project management tool for the project/s that I am
involved in concerning incubator collaborative workspace. After
reading your email lists -- I was wondering if Google Wave might be
a possible way to take this topic off-line (and collaborative at the
same time).

Of course, the Google Wave path would be open to any other interested
party about this topic.

I look forward to your reply.

It is becoming more clear that email lists are not the right place to
have this discussion.  We really need to have physical meeting for
collaborative spaces.  Alex/Tony I would like to talk more about this
at SXSW this weekend about having a collaborative space unconference.

Our Coworking spaces in town are mostly focsed on independents, wo are not

I think there is an overlap between the two, but they have different

  Hi Everyone,

I could use your help and insights.  In May, I'm giving a talk at the

is to give a general introduction about coworking (including talking about
many of you) and talk a little bit about how coworking can, in the right
hands, be used as an economic development tool (incubators are primarily
cast as economic development tools, so I thought this idea would resonate
with my audience).  Here's my problem:  often, when I'm describing
  NextSpace
to newbies, the response is often something like, Oh, I get it!  You're
running an incubator!  Even though I painstakingly point out the many ways
that coworking is not like an incubator, I think people naturally try to
equate an unknown concept (coworking) with a known concept (incubators).
I'd really like to avoid this problem during my upcoming talk, which is no
small challenge, given that I'm talking to a bunch of incubator people.

So, does anyone have ideas for how I can gently but firmly encourage my
audience to avoid this tendency to equate coworking spaces with incubators?
I'm assuming that many/most of your have had to make this distinction.  So,
what's your best line/tactic that you use?  Here's one that I've found
useful:  incubators are top-down and prescriptive, while coworking spaces
are bottom-up and organic.  I'd be grateful to hear from the rest of you.

  Thanks in advance,

[Coworking] Was: newbie from Orrville, OH (Alan Pruitt - Yuma AZ - Introduction)

2009-07-27 Thread apruitt

Hello Darrin ( Group):

I apologize for barging into this thread -- but I noticed some of
Darrin's comments are similar to my setting/s in Arizona.

I am the Director of the Western Arizona Economic Development District
(WAEDD) for La Paz, Mohave, and Yuma counties.

Full disclosure: I am currently EDA funded for the planning and
development of my District's projects under our current CEDS document
-- so there is some heavy lift for getting this project rolling.

I also have several years under my belt with the Small Business
Development Center network in Arizona as a business analyst/counselor.

I am forging a Rural Enterprise Accelerator Program (REAP) and the
Coworking concept is one of the important silos in this REAP project.

REAP is a fancy title for the business incubator 1.0 model.

Currently, I am recruiting champions in the community to lay the
groundwork for Coworking in several (very) rural communities in a
district that encompasses 23,502 square miles.

I have been lurking in the Coworking discussions for 2 years now --
and it is time to move this concept to reality.

The first stop is to marshal all of my business one-stop-type
resources (local, state, and regional) into a virtual business
incubator model and then move next into the actual catalyst stage of
Coworking.

I am confident of my ability to engage community stakeholders and
champions to re-purpose property locations to support Coworking.

For Darrin: I would like to share experiences as you grow the
EntreprenOrrville Center for Business Innovation.

For Danielle: My wife just returned from Burlington (one week) with
her girl friend who grew up in the area (Rutland) and she is really
happy with that area of the world. Good luck!

Cheers!

[Coworking] Introduction | Yuma Arizona

2008-07-17 Thread apruitt

Hello:

I have been lurking on the fringes for the last 12 months watching the
growth of Coworking -- and as serendipity would have it -- an
associate asked me today to study the feasibility of becoming a
catalyst for Coworking in Yuma Arizona.

I have gathered a lot of the relevant data from different Coworking
resources, but one question that I have is this:

Does any Coworking site have any experience in the catalyst process
with a non-profit organization (i.e., co-opting the formation of a
Coworking site)?

This non-profit is an educational foundation that is affiliated with a
main stream community college.

The non-profit foundation has adequate space for the formation of a
Coworking space and possibly some local corporate sponsorship of
infrastructure (i.e., T-1, video conference equipment, HVAC,
furniture, copiers, VOIP, etc.).

I am a serial entrepreneur and I also work 20 hours per week as a
business analyst for this community college. The community college is
actively exploring new directions for entrepreneurial development in a
community that is turning the corner from long-term (rural)
agricultural-based business; to technology based new economy
business development in a cross border (bi-cultural and bi-lingual)
demographic.

This is new ground for me to cover -- so please be gentle with any
possible suggestions. I have over 20 years of Fortune 200 experience
in business due diligence and industry analysis -- so I have a deep
well of possible contributions to this community, as well.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated response/s.
