Re: [css-d] New website
Interesting. Thanks for the feedback. I am going to see what Gzipping the files and images is going to take. Right now I just replace the theme images with a fresh crunch and things are loading much quicker. Now I have to download all the images in the uploads folder and do the same. Thanks for the tips and feedback everyone! Re: [css-d] New website
Karl, I used a different speed test that gives a LOT of tips on each aspect of the time to completion. There is a wealth of insight in the tips, in a few cases they fizzle out (tips) but this list is awesome with feedback! In my 1st test page load speed was 5.1 seconds, a second one 4.9 seconds. https://gtmetrix.com/reports/tpsautoshippers.com/5MxjYmgX The biggest takeaway in that was the first file took 1.2 seconds to be requested and delivered. One site I have on shared hosting (about 1,500 sites total) loads the first file in 111 milliseconds, about 10 times faster. I would try to get that below a 1/2 second, preferably 1/4 second (250 milliseconds). I have target page load times of: non-profit (1.5 seconds or less); for profit 1.2 seconds (usually have lots more trinkets, scripts and graphics). On that test site a B minus grade on both tests (PageSpeed & YSlow) is readily achievable with MOST themes PROVIDED your host allows GZIP for all files AND has a caching firewall between the server and the Internet. As to some of their 'advanced' score categories - few shared hosts allow setting header expiration headers nor enitity tags. so don't swaet trying for A minus or above, especially if you have multiple scripts and css files loading. Re: [css-d] New website
Ah, thanks Chris, I guess I should mention this is a purchased WordPress theme that has been updated and modified by me. So some of the loading and excess scrolling and imagery was pre-built. I tried crunching my PNGs and JPEGs, but I admit there are a lot. Not sure what to do more than that. Any tips? Thanks for the feedback! Hi Karl, I loaded the site on a Nexus 5 and the breakpoints seem to work fine. What really stands out to me is the slow performance: http://www.webpagetest.org/result/160130_65_54P/. Re: [css-d] New website
Sorry Philippe, The css you get to see was done by someone else. Most of my css "from scratch" is in the admin area. I did modifications to that css. You might be able to see the difference in style of writing. I cuddle my braces. So your saying put all the css for all users in on css file then minify? This is a WordPress theme that allows the user to select different types of css or add their own I might mention. I don't know how putting all the css together would work in this scenario. Where can I minify if I am not using node.js? I will do my own google search too, just wondering of any gold links out there people have sworn by. Oh, no, I don’t think so, particularly as you load all stylesheets for everybody. You could eventually split them up based on media queries, but otherwise there is little or no benefit. e.g. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/Media_Queries/Using_media_queries Something more you can do: minify your stylesheet(s). Thanks Philippe, I have ImageOptim and did crunch them. I will do again. As far as the Gzip, I agree, however I was told to split the css files up so there was less code to load and less load time. Mind you when the Gzip is in place it make more of a difference. Was I told wrong?? Thank you for your feedback.
