This war will play like a movie script. If you tend to believe the wag the dog type scenarios that are floating around, then this air campaign will begin just about the time witnesses are called in the Senate impeachment trial or at some other so called critical moment in the proceeding. Anyways back to the movie script. Prelude: Saddam Hussain targets US/British warplanes, or commits some act against US/British. Act 1. All Major networks are brought into Iraq ahead of time so they can be live when the bombs start falling. Act 2. We bomb the hell out of Iraq for weeks Act 3. Pentagon officials have daily briefings with bomb damage photographs. Act 4. The major networks are taken around iraq and shown scenes for the camera which feature either dead civilian bodies, or bleeding civilians. Act 5. The bombing campaign ends with US officials pronouncing that the campaign was a sucess, how Saddam was seriously damaged, etc etc. Act 6. Saddam Hussain, who has probably been hiding in the same building where the network press corps are set up on the roof, emerges and pronounces that again he has defeated the evil American/British agression against his country. Postlude. Once the air campaign is over, we revert to prelude and start the cycle again. Cheers, Robert DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list. [CTRL] Y2K: The Coming Storm
-Caveat Lector- Hello all, since I don't research that much and have posted very little I am wondering if any of the members here could answer a question for me. I happen to see an interesting program on the INSP network tonite and the topic was "Y2K: The Coming Storm". It told a lot of what has already been posted on here and showed a couple of clips of Clinton speaking to a group about the y2k bug that I have never seen on the national news. It also advertised three different books on the subject and that is what I would like to know if they are any good and worth reading. The names of the books are: Planet Earth, The Final Chapter by Hal LindseyJan. 1, 2000, The Day The World Shuts Down by Morris Cerrullo...and the 3. The Millenium Meltdown by Grant R. Jeffrey. I would like to have some opinions on these to know if they are worth buying..Rock DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list. Re: [CTRL] Drudge Report
-Caveat Lector- Mr. Stokes, The gentleman claimed that Warren Harding was a great man. Since he made the claim I was only asking why he believed it to be true. Not an unreasonable request. Since you're posting on Harding...please be forthcoming. What information can you shed on the subject? None, I guess. Then, you shift over to the subject of President Clinton.. First off, he is not my hero. He wasn't my first choice. I wanted someone who would address the collapse of American manufacturing and stop our slide into globalism. Clinton is really a product of the DNC, a group that has a strong corporate/globalist orientation interested in pushing through NAFTA and GATT, two trade measures I opposed. So, I'm not happy with him. I'm an economic nationalist. Since you seem to be free with the term, "traitor," I think it is just short of treasonous for American corporations to continue using slave labor around the world, close down plants in America, open up operations in hellholes around the world, then bring their shoddy, slave-labor products back into the US to sell them at inflated prices. That is irresponsible and in my book, because they are undercutting the economic well-being of working families here in the United States. This policy of globalization has been pushed by both political parties (Republicans champion it as well as Democrats). Clinton is just continuing the policies of his predecessors (going back to Nixon--a Republican president--who championed an open door policy to China.) Of course, I believe that we need to develop peaceful trading policies with other countries..but not at the expense of our own people. On this point, we have serious philosophical differences. I believe that everyone--both labor and the business sector must pursue policies that further the common good--by that I mean, they should pursue economic policies that further the best interests of their own country. We could learn from the Japanese on this point. The Japanese business class does not impoverish their own workers in order to make a quick buck like we will do. They are profoundly patriotic. They're not interested in undercutting the economic well-being of their own people. Nor do they craft trade policies that are in the worst interests of their own fellow citizens. As a result, they don't have the kind of rancorous class divisions we have here... Of course, the analogy falls apart when you consider that they are a homogeneous society...without the racial/ethnic/religious/ divisions.. but their professional elites (the most privileged members of their system) do not seek to impoverish their own citizens. Examples: Nike, Boeing, General Electric, General Motors,...a long list of manufacturers, food producers, etc. From my own personal experience in my former community of Mayfield, Kentucky...three manufacturing industries were closed up and moved overseas (Dillon Manufacturing, Mary-Nell and a boot company whose name I've forgotten). You called President Clinton a "traitor." Walk the walk yourself, sir. Be specific. The sale of missile technology to the Chinese? I agree with you. That was a disastrous policy...but those technology transfers originated in the Bush administration, an administration that has had an interest in promoting closer ties with China. So, all Clinton has been doing is carrying out the foreign policy measures of his Republican predecessors... Personally, I think it is a mistake to share technology with the Chinese. But since both the Republican and Democratic administrations have approved these sales...they were reviewed by the NSA and the State Department as not posing a threat to the security of the United States...I don't think it can be considered a "treasonous" act. Unless you want to argue that President Bush was a traitor to the country as well. Presidential accomplishments? As a Democratic President, he hasn't done much. I would agree. In fact, he has more or less kept the nation on the same foreign policy course that the Republican party has wanted. Both Republicans and Democrats want a stable world order with Wall Street and London banks at the helm. (a policy which involves giving lip service to domestic problems here at home, while they carry out the bidding of their corporate masters..) Since the policy of globalization continues forward..Republicans are happy because it means an expansion of business abroad. Labor unions are pretty much kept in check... The minority community is pacified with token representation...and there is some token appearance of political representation for the nation's working people. Maybe your particular political agenda isn't advanced (whatever that might be), but for the most part, he has managed to keep up the illusion that the nation isn't falling to pieces...that we can continue to run these trade deficits without wrecking the economy...and that working people will remain passive. So far, the formula has

Former Alltel President shot in head, coroner says suicide Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Saturday, January 9, 1999 Page 2B Alltel ex-director's death ruled suicide ^^ BY JIM BROOKS ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE The November death of Charles Wilbourne Miller, 63, a prominent businessman whose father co-founded the telephone company that became Alltel Communications, has been ruled a suicide, authorities said. Miller's body was discovered Nov. 17 in a shallow pit about 300 yards from his ranch house at 5100 Studer Road near Ferndale. On Wednesday, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette obtained a copy of the autopsy report prepared by assistant medical examiner Frank Peretti. Miller died of a "contact gunshot wound of the head", Peretti wrote. The assistant medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. Police found a .410 gauge shotgun near Miller's body and a Ruger .357-caliber revolver submerged in the water. Two spent rounds were in the handgun's cylinder, Peretti wrote. Investigators said the Ruger was the weapon Miller used to kill himself. Miller's wife, Katie Campbell Miller, 44, reported her husband msising earlier on Nov. 17. He had not been seen at their Little Rock home since 11 a.m. that day, a police report said. She told police that when she drove to the ranch, she found the cattle gate locked and the house lights off, but Miller's pickup was in the garage, unlocked, with his cellular phone inside. Deputies and Miller's sons Alan H. Miller and Charles M. Miller searched the ranch and found Miller's body. Miller had been president and chairman of the board of Allied Telephone, founded by his father, Charles B. Miller and his uncle, Hugh R. Wilbourne Jr. He then served as executive vice president and a member of the board of directors of Alltel, Allied's successor. In the early 1980s, the War on (Some) Drugs and the War on (Some) Terrorists led to various U.S. government initiatives to "follow the money." The evidence indicates that at some point NSA made the logical decision that continual access meant the NSA had to become a major provider of banking software. James R. Its name was Systematics Inc., launched in 1967 [ 1968? ] and funded and controlled for most of its life by Arkansas billionaire Jackson Stephens, a 1946 Naval Academy graduate. Foster was one of Stephens' trusted deal- makers at the Rose Law Firm, where he was partner with Hillary Rodham Clinton, Webster Hubbell and William Kennedy (whose father was a Systematics director). Hubbell also played an overseer role at Systematics for the NSA for some years according to intelligence sources. "Systematics has had close ties to the NSA and CIA ever since its founding, sources say, as a money-shuffler for covert operations. It is no secret that there were billions of dollars moving around in 'black' accounts--from buying and selling arms to the Contras, Iran, Iraq, Angola and other countries to paying CIA operatives and laundering money from clandestine CIA drug dealing. Having taken over the complete computer rooms in scores of small U.S. banks as an 'outsource' supplier of data processing, Systematics was in a unique position to manage that covert money flow. Sources say the money was moved at the end of every day disguised as a routine bank-to-bank balancing transaction "Systematics' money-laundering role for the intelligence community might help explain why Jackson Stephens tried to take over Washington-based Financial General Bankshares in 1978 on behalf

-Caveat Lector- On Sat, 9 Jan 1999 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: To some it will seem a radical shift but I have changed my view on this whole issue, at least to a certain extent. Let me explain. I believe that there is sufficient evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Clinton to have him impeached solely on the charges against him. There certainly is a LOT more behind the scenes that he is definitely guilty of (treason, and treachery against the US which he swore to uphold, being the most damaging). I am now convinced however that this whole issue should have been dropped before it began because I don't like the puritanical emphasis that has already been the byproduct of the whole mess. Then, Teo, you are allowing them to win... Not only do you let them get away with the 'wrongdoing' you admit you believe was done, you let them get away with the blatant blackmail they are conducting... The answer is to NOT just drop it all...do you really think they will stop the 'wrongdoing' if the watchdogs go aways? Clinton as well. I wish the whole thing had never begun, BUT since it has I want to see it played out to the full and that means full trial and witnesses etc. I'm confused...I thought you always supported an impeachment and trial... It is my hope that some nugget of truth will fall out of the trial and some good will come of it. This is my feeling, also...and may be why certain parties are so against calling witnesses, I suspect...there's a fear that much more damning evidence may slip out if witnesses are allowed, evidence which will possibly lead to the impeachment and/or prosecution of some highly placed people -- perhaps Gore (explains the bleatings about the Repubs 'overthrowing' the election, which doesn't make sense on the surface, since Gore would end up in "the catbird's seat"...BUT if evidence comes out in the trial that he ALSO committed treason, well...) -- perhaps a few Administration officials -- perhaps some important Congresscritters from BOTH sides of the aisle... He should be impeached and [possibly hanged along with numerous others on both sides of the party aisle for his treason, and that should be the issue before the Senate. But it isn't. The issue is perjury and obstruction of justice. Even if it WAS treason, the Senate trial, not being a criminal trial, doesn't have any power except to remove him from office... My guess? A good possibility that 'something' comes out in the Senate trial which suddenly broadens it's scope beyond the perjury and obstruction of justice charges...something which perhaps DOES show possibly treasonous actions, not only on the part of Clinton, but possibly Gore too... The Dems complain loud and long about the Repubs conducting a 'witch hunt', and demand that the Senate trial just stick to the original charges... But the new stuff is so 'hot', it can't be completely ignored...the Senate, knowing that the only thing it can do is remove Clinton from office no matter WHAT the charges are, votes to remove him from office based solely on the perjury and obstruction of justice charges -- because of the 'hotness' of the other stuff uncovered, the Senate Dems no longer feel they can back the president and so vote to remove based on the 'lesser' charges... The Senate then turns the 'hot' stuff it uncovered over to an independent prosecutor to pursue possible criminal charges against Clinton...even if it ostensibly isn't after anything on Gore, I predict there will be enough fallout so that it will be hard to deny his involvement...as the criminal proceedings against Clinton proceed, the House Judiciary Committee commences an investigation into Gore...with a lot of 'what did he know, and when did he know it' stuff... With the end result that by the time the year 2000 comes around, Gore will effectively be unelectable... Of course, if all the 'doom-and-gloomers' are right about the Y2K problem, Gore may solve his problem by declaring martial law and suspending all elections... ...just a day dream of mine, total speculation... Clinton is scum but now I wish that they had just let him alone from the start. 'Just let him alone'? To continue his scummy acts, including treason? Let us all hope now that this will create a steamroller effect that will clear Washington of ALL of the traitors and scum and we can start fresh, that is really the only acceptable outcome. Not very likely, huh? One can only hope...and keep the pressure on one's own representatives to NOT sweep it all under the rug...if we just sit back as passive viewers and DON'T actively participate in attempting to change things, then we deserve what we get... X DRUDGE REPORT X 01/10/99 07:08 UTC X WHITE HOUSE DNA CHASE: TEEN DOING 'WELL' AFTER NEWS OF 'NO MATCH' **Exclusive** He had been told all of his life by his mother that Bill Clinton was his father, but late this week, 13-year old Danny Williams of Arkansas learned the truth: He is not. A stunning DNA showdown came to a dramatic conclusion this weekend when it was learned that STAR magazine was in posession of lab results -- results that ruled out Bill Clinton as the father! The DRUDGE REPORT was first to reveal the DNA chase that captured the attention of official Washington in a series of exclusive reports. TIME magazine, in fresh editions, confirms may of the details first reported in this space: "Using the Starr Report's FBI analysis of Clinton's DNA as its reference, STAR paid former prostitute Bobbie Ann Williams and her 13-year-old son for their story and blood samples." "The Starr Report contains sufficient data to make a valid DNA comparison to rule out paternity," TIME magazine reported. The DRUDGE REPORT has learned that 13-year old Danny Williams is now dealing with the news that Bill Clinton is not his father. "Danny is holding up fine... doing quite well," a source close to the situation in Arkansas explained on Saturday. "For him, this was always just a search for the truth," the source added. In what now must be viewed as a cruel hoax by the boy's mother -- Bobbie Ann Williams even gave a paid interview to PARAMOUNT's HARD COPY detailing her "relationship" with Bill Clinton -- the story of sex for money that ended in pregnancy itself, in the end, was debunked and flunked by science. The tale of Bobbie Ann and her son has been running deep in the Arkansas underground for years. The story hit national exposure with a treatment in the GLOBE tabloid in 1992. The GLOBE at the time reported that the mother had passed a lie detector test. A picture of young Danny was legend on the Internet, even becoming a source of questioning at a White House press briefing earlier this week. "The picture on the Internet he looks exactly like the President," declared a reporter at the White House. Press secretary Lockhart: "That's good. And I'm an alien space baby." And while the elite media will bark that it was wrong to report the DNA chase that was unfolding behind the scenes -- until after it is all over, of course -- DRUDGE REPORT readers of all stripes have come to expect details on events rocking and shocking those unfortunate souls who rise to power! Re: [CTRL] Stampeding Bison
-Caveat Lector- Dear Jerry, I remember those times that you speak of in the LATE fifty's early sixty's. That was almost twenty years difference from MY experience. The events that happened had nothing to do with MY experience. In my post, I indicated I lived in Claxton, Georgia. That's a whole different country than Alabama. Most of the beatings and killings were done by the Police force, and a very, very, tiny segment of the whites. Any way, calling me a liar or attacking me for simply reporting my memories of how things really was simply because they don't align with your perception of the truth is what does not wash. I can remember the one place that Blacks and whites together met. At the country store, on Saturday or after church on Sunday. It was called the "porch meeting". the General store had a big front porch with rockers and barrels and wood crates to sit on. It even had a wood stove on one side for when it got cold. No body went in side our of respect for the owner of the store. Blacks and Whites sat and smoked, chewed, carved; talked about the weather; talked about nothing and talked about everything. And yes, Blacks sat on one side and Whites sat on the other side some times, and other times they just sat on the porch with their legs hanging off. No one sat on the steps. Yes, maybe we were isolated from the media's attempt to divide the races and keep them at each others throats, but you see, we were all we had! We were our community. It made no difference whether we LIKED blacks or not, and it made no difference whether THEY LIKED Whites or not. What we did was RESPECT each other! We were all equally poor and all we had was each other. What I have reported on this list is the truth FROM MY EXPERIENCE. I lived it and I know. Maybe you might face some reality yourself and understand that any number of blacks killed or maimed while protesting does not make the whole world guilty does it? The same as the Kent State Massacre does not make the whole National Guard Guilty. You need to realize that most of this atrocities have been perpetrated by your government. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but you need not call someone you don't know a liar for expressing his memories; just because it don't align with your agenda. So if you have a response (and I know you will) could you just keep it civil and not resort to name calling or character bashing? Maybe we could just debate the issues and leave the character out of it. When southern blacks with a number of participating whites began the freedom bus rides and sin-ins during the 1950s and 1960s, they were a threat to most of the quaint gentle white folk of the South. That's why so many of the marchers and bus riders and sit-in people were beaten, sometimes so bad that they were maimed, sometimes even killed but most were simply hosed or had police dogs sicked on them or were beaten with night sticks and jailed. Reality may not be pretty but if you face it you don't have to defend something that never was. Jerry DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list. That is the main problem I have with it all. It's all about marketing. Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. It was marketed as sex. Everything is marketed. Government is marketed. New laws imfringing upon our freedoms are marketed. The marketing is general Hegelian. Interestingly, this applies to getting Clinton on a sex rap (yes, it's perjury and obstruction, but marketed as sex) when they really wanted to get him on things that were too hot for them to touch (besides the fact that he covered his ass pretty well - shredded, bribed, blackmailed, killed, etc.). Tony] (Note: this was sent by my husband who is Operations Manager of a power plant, to several of his colleagues and friends. I am posting it for general info.) You know, I've been interested in this Y2K crap for a while now, as a kind of fantasy "Doomsday" scenario. Planet of the Apes, Conan the Barbarian, make a new go of it, all the good stuff. Being the instigator that I am, I liked to throw it out there it and see what kind of reaction I would get. Good study of people. The wife and I were preparing for a disruption in services, like the ice storm we had here last year. Folks around here didn't have power for a month. No water. The local comminutes ran shelters, fuel and food rationing happened, restricted travel, National Guard, that kind of thing. What goes around comes around. At work I got tasked from on high with fixing the "Y2K Problem." No sweat. The only thing that I figured would be goofy would be some software, mostly in accounting, other people interfaced stuff, and the older desktop computers. They needed to be replaced anyway. We and the World could muddle through. The major portion of the plants controls, (remember? I work at a fairly new power plant) although computer operated, were a different breed of machine, and care nothing about the date, they merely control their specific machine and send info to the plants main control computer, which operates valves and various other support devices for the main processes. No big deal. Investigation into the plant's main control computers also showed that it was no big deal, the only thing that (reportedly) would go wrong was some trending functions, which allow us to "look in the past" ( I am the master of the run- on sentence... On a dark and stormy night...) Checking some 40 odd control systems and over 400 circuit cards nothing showed. So far, so good. No indication of Y2K failures. Oh, I've got 2 systems, besides the trending thing, to software de-bug, but they only look to see if a pump has been running for a week straight, if so, the program shifts to the standby pump. Once again, no big deal. I am now down to the "stuff you never think about " level. Embedded chips. Supposedly the real crux of the matter. It seems to me that if the embedded chip doesn't have a people to machine interface, a read out of some sort, or operate on a calendar of some kind, such as: I haven't been serviced in 6 months so I will shut down function, then how could it know or even care, what today's date is ? Silly boy. I ran into a doosey of an "embedded chip." Three of them as a matter of fact. The only three I have looked at so far. This does not bode well... Doosey # 1: The plants phone system will not work. The manufacture of the chip says so. The rest of the system will, but if the brains of the systems don't, what part will? The manufacturer doesn't support this system anymore even though it was built in 1992. Doosey # 2: The meter which reads the total power output of the plant will not work. Who would check a simple meter? Here is the good part: This meter masquerades as a simple output meter, but in reality it sends a signal to the supplementary firing system which controls the Steam Turbine portion of the plant. 36 million watts worth. For $ 95.00 we can get the meter upgraded to Y2K OK status. Consider it done. Doosey # 3: The best one. The gas turbine's (the main source of power heat for this plant and most power plants built in the last 15 years...) fire suppression system central processing unit will not work. The card manufacturer says "We never built anything like that," but I'm looking at the card...and they are sending me a test program for the "card we never built." I went to the manufacturer of the CPUs web site and by gosh, it ain't going to work... Once again, if the brains of the system are not going to work, what part will? That's not the best part. If the fire suppression system is down, the Gas Turbine will not start. If the Gas Turbine is running on Y2K date roll-over, the Gas Turbine will shut down. Violently. If the Gas Turbine is not running, the rest of the plant will not be running. NO POWER to the grid. We could send a false signal to the Gas Turbine to indicate that the fire suppression system is OK, but what would our insurance carrier have to say about that? It appears that I will have to have a whole new fire suppression

So am I to gather from this that YOU know more of what HE experienced than he does? My experience is pretty close to his, although I wouldn't say there was "no" racial tension. It just wasn't a very big issue with blacks or whites. You can call me a racist if you wish, but before you do, you should check the racial mixture of my family. Try talking to the BLACKS who lived in the South at that time (as I have), and see if they were oh so content as you would like to believe... Try? I talked every day with BLACKS who were living in the South -- along with me -- at that time... You might want to consider that personal, first-hand, on-the-scene experience counts for something maybe even more than "having A black friend" -- you have ONE black friend? Only one who grew up in the South... On the other hand, I have MANY black friends who grew up in the South WITH ME. I have a black friend who grew up down south, having to watch the local KKK'rs walk by her house -- in full regalia -- going to and from their meetings...and being made to smile and wave to them...I can tell you, SHE and her family were NOT content, but knew what they had to do to keep from being lynched and their house burned down... You might consider that this gal is pulling your leg... and you've fallen for it, hook-line-and-sinker. I'm not saying that she necessarily is lying, but I have lived in the South my entire life and have never met anyone associated with the KKK. I have never met a black person who has encountered anyone I have seen KKK "rallies" on TV, and it is almost comical... There are about six KKK-ers, 600 policemen, 500 "news" reporters, and 50 or 60 hecklers booing the KKK guys. Regarding the anecdotal "evidence" of your black frined... Most of us have heard of black author (cannot think of her last name) who wrote "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings," and her horrifying tales of KKK rampages in her home town, even directed at her poor terrified family... Well, my wife grew up during the time period of the book, living about 500 yards from those "terrified black folks"... Who, by the way, were middle-class store owners (what passed for a convenience store in those days)... My wife and her sisters went almost daily to that place of business, which was next to the home of the "terrified blacks." There's a reason they moved up North...because the South didn't provide them the opportunities in employment the North did, because of their race... Have you bothered to check the Klan-watch reports of KKK activity... There are more KKK members in Ohio and Indiana than there are in the entire South, according to the avowed enemies of the KKK. The northern and mid-western states have FAR MORE KKK members than the Southern states. Lest you jump to conclusions, I hasten to add that I know that racism exists and has existed in the South (as well as the North), and that I am opposed to what I know of the KKK as it exists in our modern day. But I think black comedian/philosopher Dick Gregory was pretty close to right when he said, "In the South, they don't care how *close* we get, as long as we don't get too rich. In the North, they don't care how rich we get, as long as we don't get too close." We worked together Black and White to plant and clear the crops since most of the able bodied men were still at war. I'm sure blacks were given equal opportunity to plant clear fields -- for someone else. How many blacks OWNED this property they worked on...? I'd be interested in knowing those figures too... How many were there, June? How many blacks do you figure owned the northern factories they worked in? How many owned the Hotels they worked in? Who was keeping them from buying those factories, farms, and hotels? How many blacks were allowed to take over important office and factory jobs, supervisory and managerial positions, when the 'able bodied men' (black men WEREN'T 'able bodied'?) were away at war? "Allowed to take over" ??? Are those jobs just "allotted" to folks, or do they normally have to qualify for them? Oh, that's a rhetorical question... Of course nowadays, they ARE allotted... its called "Affirmative Action" and "Racial Set-Aside" programs... Hawk DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list. [CTRL] Evita, Swiss the Nazis
-Caveat Lector- from: http://www.consortiumnews.com/c010699a.html A HREF="http://www.consortiumnews.com/c010699a.html"The Consortium/A - January 7, 1999 Evita, Swiss the Nazis By Georg Hodel On June 6, 1947, Argentina's first lady Eva Peron left for a glittering tour of Europe. The glamorous ex-actress was feted in Spain, kissed the ring of Pope Pius XII at the Vatican and hobnobbed with the rich-and-famous in the mountains of Switzerland. Eva Peron, known as "Evita" by her adoring followers, was superficially on a trip to strengthen diplomatic, business and cultural ties between Argentina and important leaders of Europe. But there was a parallel mission behind the high-profile trip, one that has contributed to a half century of violent extremism in Latin America. According to records now emerging from Swiss archives and the investigations of Nazi hunters, an unpublicized side of Evita's world tour was coordinating the network for helping Nazis relocate in Argentina. This new evidence of Evita's cozy ties with prominent Nazis corroborates the long-held suspicion that she and her husband, Gen. Juan Peron, laid the groundwork for a bloody resurgence of fascism across Latin America in the 1970s and '80s. Besides blemishing the Evita legend, the evidence threatens to inflict more damage on Switzerland's image for plucky neutrality. The international banking center is still staggering from disclosures about its wartime collaboration with Adolf Hitler and Swiss profiteering off his Jewish victims. The archival records indicate that Switzerland's assistance to Hitler's henchmen didn't stop with the collapse of the Third Reich. And the old Swiss-Argentine-Nazi connection reaches to the present in another way. Spanish "superjudge" Baltasar Garzon is seeking to open other Swiss records on bank accounts controlled by Argentine military officers who led the so-called "Dirty War" that killed and "disappeared" tens of thousands of Argentines between 1976-83. During World War II, Gen. Peron -- a populist military leader -- made no secret of his sympathies for Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany. Even as the Third Reich crumbled in the spring of 1945, Peron remained a pro-fascist stalwart, making available more than 1,000 blank passports for Nazi collaborators fleeing Europe. With Europe in chaos and the Allies near victory, tens of thousands of ranking Nazis dropped out of sight, tried to mix in with common refugees and began plotting escapes from Europe to Argentina across clandestine "ratlines." At the Argentine end of that voyage was Rodolfo Freude. He also was Juan Peron's private secretary, one of Evita's principal benefactors and the chief of Argentine internal security. Freudes father, Ludwig, played another key role. As managing director of the Banco Aleman Transatlantico in Buenos Aires, he led the pro-Nazi German community in Argentina and acted as trustee for hundreds of millions of German Reichsmarks that the Fuehrer's top aides sent to Argentina near the wars end. By 1946, the first wave of defeated fascists was settling into new Argentine homes. The country also was rife with rumors that the thankful Nazis had begun to repay Peron by bankrolling his campaign for the presidency, which he won with his stunning wife at his side. In 1947, Peron was living in Argentina's presidential palace and was hearing pleas from thousands of other Nazis desperate to flee Europe. The stage was set for one of the most troubling boatlifts in human history. The archival records reveal that Eva Peron stepped forward to serve as Gen. Peron's personal emissary to this Nazi underground. Already, Evita was an Argentine legend. Born in 1919 as an illegitimate child, she became a prostitute to survive and to get acting roles. As she climbed the social ladder lover by lover, she built up deep resentments toward the traditional elites. As a mistress to other army officers, she caught the eye of handsome military strongman Juan Peron. After a public love affair, they married in 1945. As Perons second wife, Evita fashioned herself as the "queen of the poor, the protector of those she called "mis descamisados" -- "my shirtless ones." She created a foundation to help the poor buy items from toys to houses. But her charity extended, too, to her husband's Nazi allies. In June 1947, Evita left for post-war Europe. A secret purpose of her first major overseas trip apparently was pulling together the many loose ends of the Nazi relocation. Evita's first stop on her European tour was Spain, where Generalissimo Francisco Franco -- her husband's model and mentor -- greeted her with all the dignified folderol of a head of state. A fascist who favored the Axis powers but maintained official neutrality in the war, Franco had survived to provide a haven for the Third Reich's dispossessed. Francos Spain was an important early hide-out for Nazis who slipped through the grasp of the Allies and needed a place to

As a Democratic President, he hasn't done

[CTRL] Seldes on Clinton Scandals
-Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.consortiumnews.com/consor43.html"The Consortium/A - Dec. 5, 1998 Seldes on Clinton Scandals By Rick Goldsmith Rick Goldsmith is the producer and director of Tell the Truth and Run: George Seldes and the American Press, an account of Seldess life and career. The documentary was nominated for the 1996 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The 111-minute film is available, for home viewing only, on VHS videotape by check or money order for $44.95 (includes shipping and handling) from Kovno Communications, 2600 Tenth St. #104F, Berkeley, CA 94710. (Requests for educational or institutional sale or rental of the videotape should contact New Day Films, 888-367-9154 or see www.newday.com.) Over the past year, I've been asked several times, "What do you think George Seldes would have written about the Clinton-Lewinsky affair?" Taking the question literally, the answer is, of course, elusive, unknowable. But pondering the answer, i.e. examining the onslaught of media coverage and its effect on America's politics from what I can surmise would be Seldes's perspective, says volumes about the timeliness -- and timelessness -- of Seldes's journalism. George Seldes was America's most prolific and undoubtedly its most important press critic. He was preceded in this century by muckrakers Will Irwin and Upton Sinclair, and The Nation's Oswald Villard, among others. But each of those writers wrote a book, or an extended article on press criticism, then moved on to other journalistic endeavors. In the late 1920s, Seldes -- already a noted foreign correspondent who had borne more than his share of censorship -- set his sights on the press, sunk in his teeth, and never so much as loosened his jaw for more than two decades. His books included You Can't Print That! (1929), Freedom of the Press (1935), and his controversial Lords of the Press (1938), which profiled the publisher or head of every major American news organization, from the tabloids to the chains to The Associated Press, from the Jewish Daily Forward to The New York Times. In 1940, Seldes founded the newsletter In fact, a combination of press criticism and investigative journalism, which he published each week for a decade, and which served as a model for I.F. Stone's Weekly. What was so flawed -- and so important -- about the press that Seldes should make its scrutiny his life's work? The answer lies, at least in part, in Seldes's early journalistic career. Seldes became a reporter at age 18 in 1909, at the tail end of the progressive/muckraker era. He was exposed as a young man to a journalism of moral righteousness, and to a dedicated group of writers who exposed abuse of power in general and specifically the sins or consequences of monopoly capitalism. Nine years later, Seldes was reporting from the battlefields of France, essentially selling the Great War to the home front. Only after the Armistice did Seldes realize, or let himself realize, that he and his colleagues (American and European) had helped to enable, by falsifying the facts and glorifying war, the greatest orgy of slaughter in the history of mankind. But the Great War was also Seldes's entree, as a reporter, to the great stage of Europe. As Berlin bureau chief for Colonel Robert McCormick's Chicago Tribune, Seldes traveled to every capital on the continent, including, in 1922, to Moscow of the newly formed Soviet Union. Sympathetic to the Soviet socialist experiment by upbringing -- Seldes's father had been a spokesperson for the U.S.-based Friends of Russian Freedom during the Russian revolution of 1905 -- Seldes discovered in short order that the Soviet government had no use for a free press. The Soviet press officer proudly proclaimed, "censorship is a brother" of the revolution. Seldes was not-so-politely "asked to leave" after he and three other reporters were discovered smuggling stories out of the country in the diplomatic mailbag. Seldes judged the Soviet Union's form of communism the worst political system he could imagine -- until he reached Italy less than two years later. In late 1924, Italian fascism was two years old. Capitalists the world over, especially in the United States, were impressed with the Corporate State -- an orderly place where might and money united to create the "ultimate business climate." Europe was in terrific upheaval and disarray from the World War I, and fascism's brutal underbelly had not yet been exposed, so the seeming "order" that had been restored in Italy impressed many a foreigner. American muckrakers Ida Tarbell and Lincoln Steffens, for example, were early supporters of Italian fascism. And with the death in 1924 of both Lenin and Woodrow Wilson, the charismatic Benito Mussolini, the father of fascism, became the most prominent leader on the world stage. Into this setting stepped George Seldes. He quickly learned of the involvement of Mussolini in the assassination earlier that year of

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ian Goddard) Date: Sat, Jan 9, 1999 6:57 PM Message-id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Environmental News Service reports that in remote regions of the U.S., fleets of jets are creating massive grid-work contrail patterns across the sky and apparently are also spraying some kind of substance out of their wing tips that seems to be making people deathly ill. The fleets of jets lay a grid-work pattern of contrails that expand and turn a once clear sky into an overcast, and then according to witnesses a "cobweb" like material falls from the sky, which seems to make people very ill. One witness to these events goes so far as to suggest that with the secrecy said to surround these aerial activities and the illness they seem to induce in those on the ground, there is secret plan in the works for a mass culling of the human race (which United Nations population reports suggest is too large, and the U.N.'s Universal Declaration of Human Rights does stipulate that your right to life can be revoked if it's deemed to be "contrary to the purposes of the U.N.") Full story: http://ens.lycos.com/ens/jan99/1999L-01-08-05.html Anybody know of an innocuous explanation for such spraying? Could this be some kind of cloud-formation experimentation? Is such formation-flying consistent with commercial-pilot practice (which airport officials claim to be the case)? __ I just discovered this shocking fact the other day: The United Nations Universal Declairation of Human Rights defines the right to revoke all human rights if and when they are determined to be contrary to the purposes of the U.N. as stipulated in Article 29, which states: "These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations." http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/a_udhr.htm So if my right to life is deemed to be contrary to the central purpose, I may not exercise it! :( This is a great contract! Yet there are a few dynamics at play here we would all do well to examine more closely and objectively. Not unlike John "Val Valerian" Grace and his Magnum Opus, the Leading Edge Research Site at www.trufax.org, Sam has assembled a great many pieces of the puzzle into a fairly homogenous (i.e. "corresponding in structure because of a common origin"), cogent synthesis which centers on the notions of a Valleean "control system" equipped with various tentacles which exists almost hydra-like behind the scenes of our conscious awareness; our ever-so-fragile consensus reality. From FEMA to fluoridation; from aspartame to aliens; from Masons (i.e. Frere Macons) to Machiavellianism, Sam has cobbled together a remarkably poignant and robust synthesis which forces us all to reexamine what remains hidden from our conscious awareness in surprisingly plain sight. And we laugh at him and call him a "nut." Yet only because there is too much truth in it all -- it makes us nervous and unsettled and, like little children out on the schoolyard, we deprecate him because he causes us to see those things about ourselves and our "reality" which we would rather pretend do not exist. The scientologist Ingo Swann coined a most intriguing phrase in regards to PSI/RV stuff. When anot quite fit into the viewer's own perceptual matrix, there is a strong temptation to reconstruct the data and mash it into a box which makes more "psense" to us. He termed this tautological perceptual artifact "analytical overlay." And what a remarkably poignant phrase, that! When we perceive otherdimensional intelligences, for example, we simply cannot understand them so we dress them in our own preferred costumes of analytical overlay, calling them Martians or Zeta Reticulans or other such nonsense, simply because of our own latter 20th century cultural inculcation. And when confronted with exceptionally clever non-human intelligences which introduce new metaprogramming; new memes into our perceptual matrices, we cannot admit to ourselves the entities are -- as Brother McKenna so astutely remarked -- "not only stranger than we currently imagine but stranger than we currently CAN imagine." No, such admissions are simply out of the question to us more "rational" types so we hastily sweep them under the rug, hoping against hope that we can shield the sight not only from others but from ourselves as well. For it is far too uncomfortable for us to admit there may be others about who -- in their fourth, fifth or sixth density levels of reality -- are as far advanced above us as we third density types are advanced above second density animals or first density rocks or trees on the scale of "density"-based consciousness. So we play the silly game of "skepticism." TRUE skepticism maintains an untainted objectivity when confronting the inexplicable. Yet we are not truly skeptics in the pure sense of the definition. In fact, as an almost absurd caricature of skeptics, we've reduced ourselves to playing Paranormal Policeman; immediately arresting and incarcerating anyone who challenges our fundamental perceptions of the nature of "reality." "So, anyway, you know good and well, it would be beyond the will of God... and the grace of the king." -Brother Jimi, _Electric Ladyland_ Some in these groups are keenly aware of the interstitial analogues at play. For every Outer Order, there is an Inner Order; for every exterior level of Initiation, there is an ethereal counterpart, etc. "There is a feeling that I get in the course of my investigations of being in the presence of a form of consciousness that is truly remarkable. That consciousness has a great sense of absurdity, and also a great sense of humor. The bottom line is that I feel that I've learned something out of this whole exercise, and as long as I'm continuing to learn something I'm going to continue to do it." -Frater Jacques Vallee, Brotherhood of Galactic Science Yet not unlike a freeway, there are a multitude of "offramps" along the way -- offramps which inevitably tempt us all on our various initiatory paths. When we are too shaken; too disturbed to carry on along the path, we seek the refuge of a "rest stop" which offers some of the amenities that connect us back to a simpler time; a time before we were so rudely awakened to what Col. Do Ware has seminally termed the "larger reality." And so we sit in our overheated vehicles, drinking in the scenic view at the rest stop; and slamming a couple cold ones, perhaps, to gird our loins

How was the religion of the South different from that of the North? The north, and particularly the northeast, was under the strong influence of Unitarianism, whereas the South was primarily Calvinistic That's the short answer, but the two philosophies are diametrically opposite to each other. What Roadsend explained is that when people start to use any religious treatise to support their views, one no longer has 'discussion' but prosyletizing...since one's religious beliefs all boil down to belief and faith, not facts. Anyone who expresses "strong opinions" based on what they've learned (rather than pure emotionalism) is expressing a thought based on their "religion," even if it is atheism. In the discourse leading up to the present discussion, someone opined that slavery was a "sin." However, when someone (such as I did) pointed out the *historical fact* that the Southern people did not consider it a "sin" based on their understanding of what is "sinful" as outlined in the Bible, that is NOT prosylitizing, but offering a historical basis for various actions... These *facts* -- like all "facts" -- are evididence to support a thesis, and not advocacy for any religion. Now, I am loathe to get into a "religious debate" on this list, but the bible is set forth primarily as a document (or documents) that claim to relate historical facts and offer some evidence of their claims. Thus, when one reads the Washington Post or the New York times, although the reported "history" may be hours old rather than hundreds of years, the reader who accepts what is said, is doing so "by faith." Those who reject tabloid news are rejecting it because they do not think the evidence supports the "news." Without first-hand knowledge, both views are taken "by faith." So if it is reported that, for instance, that U.S. warplanes bombed Iraq, the reader's expressions of belief or disbelief do not consititute a "religious debate." I could argue for the establishment of some law based on what Buddha taught...but if other's do not follow Buddhism, my argument is meaningless, and if I insist on quoting tenets of Buddhism, I'm then on a soapbox, prosyletizing my PERSONAL beliefs/faith/superstition, and not DISCUSSING FACTS. However, if you say that the VietNamese Buddist monks (during the 1960's) were involved in a revolution against the Catholic French, and their self-inceneration was a sign of their Buddist beliefs justified suicide as a tactic of revolution, you would not be "on a soapbox, prosyletizing PERSONAL belief" but discussing facts -- as you understood them, not having had the personal opportunity to discuss their purpose nor intent to cook themselves in public -- which would at least imply some stronger motive than a simple adult temper-tantrum. Now, I COULD discuss aspects of life in a Buddhist country, and compare how their political system and quality of life compare to, say, a Moslem or 'Christian' country...that would be discussing FACTS...but if the discussion degenerates into an argument about which religion is 'correct', then it's OT for this list... But of course, that is precisely what has taken place in the past few days. At least I haven't advocated that anyone "get saved" by accepting whatever religion that I adhere to... "SECRETS OF THE ILLUMINATI" "THE TWO SEALS OF OUR DOOM" Few things in this life have held the attention of Man as successfully as that of a good mystery. How many times did we, as young people, pick up a "Hardy Boys" mystery or try to unravel the intricate web of mysterious, unexplainable clues with which Sherlock Holmes had to deal? And yet, for over two hundred years, one of the greatest mysteries, of all time, has been staring us in the face. We wrestle with this mystery every day of our lives without so much as giving it a passing thought. With its majestic wings mightily spread, I am referring to the Great Seals of the United States found on the back side of "Your" One Dollar Bill of United States Currency. Before we continue to address this topic any further, it would be in your interest to physically get out a "One Dollar Bill" and follow along with the illustrations found in this chapterin order that you get the 'big picture'. Looking directly at the back side of the one dollar bill you now hold, you can plainly see that it has two distinct seals between the four number 1'sand the four 'one' words spelled out. How did these two 'Great' Seals originate? Well, I know three storiesdealing with its origins. The first one tells of how Thomas Jefferson, a Mason; Benjamin Franklin, a Rosicrucian; and John Adams, also a Mason, were commissioned, on July 4, 1776, to design these seals. This is the historical aspect. The second storyrelates that these three patriots were given the design by "Illuminated" Masons".The third story holds that, while trying to design this seal in his home, on June 17, 1782, Thomas Jefferson was suddenly approached by a "being", cloaked in black. The "being" allegedly presented Jefferson with a red velvet bag which contained two plaques. Turning around, the "being" walked into Jefferson's garden and mysteriously vanished. The two plaques that were in the red velvet bag were the two Great Seals of the United States. I, personally, agree with the latter story. As you continue in this chapter, you will realize that these seals are too brilliantly put together that it had to be demonically-inspired by Satan. Whichever story 'you' believe, one outstanding fact remains unchanged; these seals were not to inaugurate the Declaration of Freedom, but were designed as a tribute to a 'new world order' that would take overthe Thirteen Colonies of the United States. It was on May 1, 1776, when Dr. Adam Weishaupt founded the Bavarian Order of the Illuminati. Weishaupt was a Professor of Jewish Canon Law at the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria, Germany. He was born a Jew and later converted to Roman Catholicism. A former Jesuit Priest, he left the order to form his own organization. It was Weishaupt's belief that only a chosen few had enough "illumination"to guide and rule the world. The problem was simply this: where would he find these few intellectual "lightbearers?" Subsequently, he found them in various lodges and orders of the day. He infiltrated the Jesuit Order, the Masonic lodges, the Rosicrucian Order and other orders of antiquity. But, all this didn't happen without reprisal. Many lodges and orders that had been infiltrated virtually warned Weishaupt to discontinue his activities. Fortunately for Weishaupt, Thomas Jefferson, in 1784, had recently been named the United States Ambassador to France. Jefferson, a Mason, favored Weishaupt's 'new order' and came to his aid. The 'new order' was now guaranteed to continue and it eventually became known as the "Order of the Illuminati." As their founder continued to expand the ranks and membership, two major events transpired; five years after he was named Ambassador to France, Thomas Jefferson returned home to become Secretary of State. Shortly after his arrival, on September 15, 1789, the United States Congress officially adopted the Great Seals of the United States which were, originally, and in fact, the Two Great Seals of the

Do opinion polls lead to political responsiveness or to manipulation of public opinion? Political observers have long debated whether public opinion surveys facilitate or undermine representative government. George Gallup argued in the 1940s, that polls are a tool for deciphering public sentiment and enabling policy makers to respond to what their constituents want. [1] By contrast, Walter Lippmann and others have contended that through the mass media elites manufacture the public attitudes they desire and that polls are merely a tool in this process of manipulating public opinion. [2] Although policy makers' use of polls has profound implications for democratic government, there has been relatively little investigation of how politicians actually use polls and interact with pollsters. [3] As part of our research on modern presidents' use of polling, we have conducted interviews, examined archival materials, and collected other evidence regarding the rather remarkable activities of the Nixon administration. We have examined Richard Nixon's use of private polls elsewhere. Here we examine the Nixon administration and the public pollsters -- Louis Harris and the Gallup organization. [4] Our research and that of others reveal that the Nixon administration pursued Harris and the Gallup organization in order to manipulate poll results and public opinion. [5] Ironically, Gallup's optimistic expectation that opinion surveys would only serve to boost government responsiveness is undermined by Nixon's relations with at least two polling organization, including Gallup's. NIXON'S PURSUIT OF THE POLLSTERS In the 1970s, Harris and Gallup were the giants of the polling industry. Because of their prominence, they attracted Nixon's interest and became prime candidates for attack and manipulation by the administration. According to the diaries of top aide H.R. Haldeman, Nixon believed that Harris and Gallup poll "directly affect our ability to govern, because of their influence on Congressmen, foreign leaders. etc." [6] Harry Dent, a top Nixon strategist, recalled being "amazed at how much the people at the top hang on to public opinion polling." The reason was "part ego, but the greater part was to build up their authority and their power in Washington." [7] It was Nixon's operating assumption that political intrigue drove Harris's and Gallup's reports. Reacting to one set of disappointing Gallup figures, the president warned his aides that "somebody is probably putting some influence on Gallup" and that it was important to "find out who it is." [8] Indeed, Nixon used his elaborate private polling operation to "keep the published polls honest." -Caveat Lector- Thanks Laura for the informative posts about sugar, chemical additives, Monsanto, etc. Two months ago, my son contracted type one diabetes. Since diabetics use aspartame and nutrasweet more than the general population, I've been concerned about the long term health problems he might develop using these artificial sweeteners. The plan, known as Enfopol 98, has been drawn up in secret by police and justice officials as part of a Europe-wide strategy to create a seamless web of telecommunications surveillance across national boundaries. The strategy, which has received widespread support in the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, will oblige all ISPs and telephone exchanges to provide agencies with "real time, full time" access to all communications, regardless of the country of origin. Current eavesdropping techniques require specific authority to be granted within each individual country so that agencies can monitor pre-designated communications within each jurisdiction. Under the proposed system, Europe will create a "one-stop shop" for snooping on communications. Satellite systems such as Iridium will be forced to create "wiretap-friendly" technology, while ISPs must submit to requirements for interception of content. The plan was revealed by the German Internetmagazine Telepolis, which recently published details of the strategy. The EU has refused to acknowledge the status of the proposal, but it is now known that Enfopol has passed through the Justice and Home Affairs Council to the stage of draft resolution. So far, national parliaments have scarcely been involved. To the dismay of advocates of strong encryption, Enfopol will function on the principle that all code must be capable of being broken. The Enfopol system will be aided by a "subject tagging" system capable of tracking targets wherever they travel. Known as the "International User Requirements for Interception" (IUR), the tagging system will create a data processing and transmission network that involves not only the names, addresses and phone numbers of targets and associates, but email addresses, credit card details, PINs and passwords. The move to establish Enfopol follows a five-year lobbying exercise by American agencies such as the FBI. When completed, the system will provide a global interception regime. But the proposal has infuriated civil liberties and Internet rights organisations. Ian Brown, technology policy director of Privacy International calls, it a "sniper's bullet to the heart of privacy". Re: [CTRL] Drudge Report
-Caveat Lector- In a message dated 99-01-10 01:07:10 EST, you write: The gentleman claimed that Warren Harding was a great man. Since he made the claim I was only asking why he believed it to be true. Not an unreasonable request. Since you're posting on Harding...please be forthcoming. What information can you shed on the subject? None, I guess. Then, you shift over to the subject of President Clinton.. I have no interest in Harding... long dead, long forgotten. It was you Clintonites who keep shifting from Clinton to the evil Republicans, never answering any of my posts with substance or even common sense. You support this criminal in the White House even though he has done nothing worth supporting. This is only a Clintonite tactic... this shifting of the subject... something the Clintonites know well... a subtle form of mind control and like the President... avoiding the issue. The way you defend Clinton, you leave the impression that you respect/like him as President in many of your former posts. Democrats/Republicans are the same, they both voted for NAFTA and GATT. Both parties receive money (bribes) from big business (the rich) and pass legislation. Clinton is also pushing for "fast-track" authority on MAI... that issue isn't dead yet. I agree with all you have said about American corporations, that is, the large corporations, most of which are multinational. Corporations run the government, they vote with their money to get special acts to benefit themselves. Perhaps the real criminals are the CEOs, presidents and board of directors who sit on many different companies and use the stockholders money to advance their own private bank accounts by stock buybacks, political contributions, contributions to colleges, trusts, and other tax free "benevolent" organisations. The Japanese do have the advantage of being almost one race. Their laws are based more on what is right for the country rather than what is right for the minorities. Japan does have a small minority of Chinese and Koreans living there, but they are not given any special privileges as are minorities in this country. I base these observations on my living in Japan from 1974 - 1978, things may have changed some since then. You called President Clinton a "traitor." Walk the walk yourself,
[CTRL] A Candid Report on the 105th Congress
-Caveat Lector- http://www.eagleforum.org/psr/1998/dec98/psrdec98.html A HREF="http://www.eagleforum.org/psr/"Phyllis Schlafly Report Index/A A Candid Report on the 105th Congress 'Big Brother' Tracking Our Daily Actions The 1996 Kennedy-Kassebaum law authorized the Department of Health and Human Services to assign "unique health care identifiers" to each American so that the government can electronically tag, track and monitor our personal medical records. Due to grassroots lobbying by Eagle Forum and others, the Omnibus- spending bill passed in October forbids the government from going ahead with this totalitarian plan "until legislation is enacted specifically approving the standard." The Collections of Information Antipiracy bill did not pass, thanks to grassroots lobbying by Eagle Forum and others. This bill would have encouraged private corporations to build databases of personal information about individual Americans, including name, address, telephone number, medical records, and "any other intangible material capable of being collected and organized in a systematic way." Corporations would acquire new federal property rights in these databases that would be protected by federal police power. Your medical chart detailing your visits to your doctor, for example, would suddenly become the federally protected property of other persons or corporations, and their rights would be enforced by the federal courts. The 1996 Welfare Reform Act requires all employers to send to a new government database, the Directory of New Hires, the name, address and Social Security number of every new worker and every employee who is promoted. This will become a massive database, tracking nearly every worker in America. The Clinton Administration tried to put a provision in the Omnibus-spending bill to share this New Hires database with other agencies (which shows how dangerous these databases are becoming). Due to the alert action of Eagle Forum, this language was deleted. Expect a battle about all these databases next year because they are a vital part of Clinton's plans to move us into "Big Brother" government. They were a major part of Clinton's socialized medicine scheme that was rejected in 1994. Trying to get Congress to kill these anti-privacy notions permanently will be a big issue in the next Congress. (See the Phyllis Schlafly Reports, July and September 1998.) Picture Federal I.D. Cards Postponed When Social Security was started, the government promised that the Social Security number would never be used for identification. But the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform Act requires that state driver's licenses after October 1, 2000 must contain Social Security numbers as the unique numeric identifier. This is clearly an attempt to convert drivers' licenses (a state matter) into national I.D. cards that will soon also include fingerprints and a magnetic strip containing all sorts of other information (retina scan, DNA print, voice print) to enable the government to track everyone's movements. The Omnibus-spending bill passed in October prohibits the government from issuing final regulations about this during the current fiscal year, which ends September 30, 1999. The stage is set for a battle next year. (See the Phyllis Schlafly Reports, July and September 1998.) Picture Clinton's Attempt to Control the Classroom The Clinton Administration is engaged in a four-prong attempt to control the curriculum of the nation's classrooms: the Goals 2000 Act passed in 1994, the School-to-Work Act passed in 1994, National Standards (which have been intellectually discredited, but are pervasive in new textbooks), and National Testing. It is obvious that national tests would give the U.S. Department of Education control of curriculum, because schools would "teach to the test." Thanks to determined efforts by Rep. Bill Goodling (R-PA) and Senator John Ashcroft (R-MO), the Omnibus-spending bill prohibits the use of federal funds to implement any new national tests not explicitly authorized by Congress. (See the Phyllis Schlafly Reports, November 1997 and March 1995.) Two School-to-Work bills were passed and signed into law: H.R. 1385 covering adult job training, youth dropout job training, and some after-school K-12 programs; and H.R. 1853, which deals with K-12 in-school vocational education. We are concerned that these bills are a big step toward mandatory school-to- work and Clinton's federalized education agenda. However, H.R. 1853 does include some important restrictions: Senator John Ashcroft's ban on using these funds to implement the 1994 School-to-Work Act, a prohibition on the development of a national database, and an explicit requirement that student participation in vocational or technical or career-path programs be voluntary. (See the Phyllis Schlafly Report, April 1997.) In an important development, Rep. Bob Schaffer (R-CO) put Marc Tucker's famous 18-page "Dear Hillary" letter in the
[CTRL] Crop Circles: An Interview with Dr. Chet Snow and Chad Deetken
Though I did this interview a year ago, the information is still current. Hilary Crop Circles: An Interview with Dr. Chet Snow and Chad Deetken Dr. Chet Snow and Chad Deetken have spent years attempting to unravel the mysteries of the phenomenon known as Crop Circles. While their distinct approaches to these formations may initially appear divergent, in essence, much of their core understanding and findings are quite similar. In speaking with both Dr. Snow and Mr. Deetken, what became immediately apparent was a blending of facts and beliefs richly imbued with psychology, hard science, myth, as well as ancient and contemporary wisdom. I enjoyed my time with these gentlemen immensely and I am deeply grateful that they took time out of their hectic schedules to be interviewed. - Hilary A. Thomas HT: How did your interest in crop circles begin? Dr. Snow: This is a little run down of how I got involved with crop circles because that is very personal to me. If you had asked me about crop circles ten years ago I probably would have had a confused blank look in my eyes and asked, What do you mean? A crop running around in circles in a crop field? At that time, I wouldnt have had any idea about them. Most people that I know, first really became aware of them in the early 1990s. I certainly became aware of them in 1990 [December of 1990 or January of 1991] when a friend from England, Dean Holden, came to visit and brought me a picture. I had never seen them before. I think it is worthwhile to note that it was really about that time that the circles became much more pictograms than just plain circles, circles in a line or, even circles in a pattern. They suddenly became patterns that looked like something and it became very clear that they were intelligently made. They werent just a random event out in a field. That was the first thing I wanted to say. The second point is that this introduction to the crops circles was a very synchronized experience for me. Within a month of meeting Dean, the elders from one of the Hopi villages called me up to visit them on a completely different matter. Something intuitively said to me, Why dont you take these pictures with you? I brought the picture when I went to meet them in February of 1991. That was really quite an eye-opener for me because suddenly they recognized certain of these patterns as having meaning to them. They took us out into a sacred canyon and showed us at least one set of petroglyps on the rock wall that really resembled one of the crop circle formations that I had shown them. I showed them a couple of other pictures with what seemed to be the English peoples interpretation and they said, No, no, no. You have to turned it upside down and it means something else. They were very excited about them and the fact that they were showing up now somewhere else in the world had meaning to them. I was excited by their reaction as I am quite interested in the prophetic aspect of the Hopi. Later on as I studied more, Ive learned that many of agriglyphs, or pictograms, seem to have meaning for other native or indigenous people including Australian aborigines. This is when I got involved with crop circles. Information about these formation eventually spread wider into our Western world maybe even at an unconscious level. People began to see these increasingly beautiful and complex formulas. This was a time (1990) when we began to get good aerial photos. Suddenly people, maybe even unconsciously, had a recognition of something they didnt understand that attracted them. Soon the media picked it up on the story. People got involved with wanting to do research on them. Then, for what ever reasons, maybe many different ones, many people got turned off at a public level. The media certainly got turned off, in part because they couldnt solve the mystery. They wanted it all to be wrapped up neatly and decided. Who was making them? How were they making them? And what was being made? The story of the crop circles didnt unfold that neatly. Since that time, it seems as if a very self selected cadre of people of no more than 100 to 150 people, seem to be the ones that return year after year. HT: Did the Hopi have any specific interpretations about any of the circles? Dr. Snow: One of the sets, the one they got the most excited about, is very similar to part of their Creation story. I wont go into all of their prophecy but, one of the parts of their prophecy is that we are moving from one world civilization to another. We are now in the fourth world, as they call it, and we are about to move into the fifth world. One of the sets of events that has to happen, or that is prophesied to happen, will be that there will be signs around the planet that are showing the recreation of the world starting to happen. One of the Hopi creation pictoglyphs is very similar to some of the crop circle glyphs that were coming in
[CTRL] Why Clinton Still Raises Big Campaign Money
-Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.eagleforum.org/psr/"Phyllis Schlafly Report Index/A Why Clinton Still Raises Big Campaign Money In his struggle to hang on to his failed presidency, Bill Clinton appears only before the groups he can count on to shore up his self-esteem by giving him a standing ovation, such as the United Nations General Assembly, the Council on Foreign Relations, and Democratic "fat cats" in multinational corporations. They like his policies and just don't care about his morals. No wonder the UN provided an enthusiastic audience! Just a year ago, Clinton addressed that same forum and assured the delegates that he would enhance UN power by bringing the United States into a "web of institutions and arrangements" for "the emerging international system" through four specific UN treaties. Clinton has delivered on his promises. He successfully persuaded the Senate to ratify the World Trade Organization, the Chemical Weapons Convention, and the NATO Expansion Treaty, and he is implementing the unratified Global Warming Treaty through federal regulations. He is also implementing the unratified Biodiversity Treaty and other agreements from the 1992 Earth Summit through his American Heritage Rivers Initiative and the President's Council on Sustainable Development. Meanwhile, Clinton has gone the last mile to deliver on the legislation so eagerly sought by the global economy advocates, whose most elite spokesmen nest in the Council on Foreign Relations. Their wish list includes the $18 billion handout to the International Monetary Fund, Fast Track (trusting Clinton to make trade agreements), Most Favored Nation status for Communist China, allowing U.S. technology to go surreptitiously to China, the permanent stationing of U.S. troops in Bosnia under NATO command, and corporate welfare to subsidize trade with corrupt Asian regimes. The global economy enthusiasts are well satisfied with President Clinton because he gives them what they want, at our expense. That's why his high- dollar dinners produce so much cash for Democratic coffers. The New York Times (September 20, 1998) has just provided an in-depth look at how corporate welfare for the multinational corporations and big political insiders is milking the U.S. taxpayers for billions. While a lot of folks are worried about their stake in mutual funds and 401(k) accounts that are invested in the global market, the Times reminds us that the "politically connected and well-heeled financiers with big bets in these shaky regions can sleep better" because their losses will be covered by U.S. taxpayers through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). OPIC is a little-known Federal Government agency that encourages Americans to invest new capital into "emerging-market" businesses in "developing" countries where no sane investor would risk his own money. OPIC investments are now in 140 countries around the globe. And how does OPIC "encourage" these overseas investments in unstable, corrupt, totalitarian, faraway countries? By adding $2 in government-guaranteed notes, backed by the full faith and credit of the United States, for every dollar of private investment. OPIC funds are structured so that the multinational corporations will reap enormous gains if the investment turns out well, and U.S. taxpayers will cover the losses if they fail. OPIC fund managers get a fee of 2.5 percent of the fund's assets and 20 percent of the ultimate profits, which can run into the tens of millions. When Clinton took office, OPIC had only two funds with combined assets of $100 million. Today there are 26 OPIC funds with $4 billion. No wonder the globalists want to keep Clinton in power! They look upon his romping with Monica as petty stuff compared to the big bucks they have at stake. We've been given full disclosure about what goes on in the Oval office, but not about what goes on in OPIC's bank accounts. OPIC doesn't make its financial details public, even though it is a government agency. Whatever happened to Freedom of Information? Don't be under any illusion that we all have the same chance to get government guarantees for our own risky investments. The New York Times reveals what it calls "a disturbing relationship between OPIC and major Democratic Party donors, people who attended White House coffees or slept in the Lincoln Bedroom." Six funds valued at $585 million were approved in 1996 shortly after the sponsors of four of them had attended White House coffees. Paul Hendrie of the Center for Responsive Politics, a liberal research group, says that a large percentage of OPIC funds is going to "people with strong political connections or who made big contributions to Democrats in the last election." OPIC funds have committed $1.5 billion to Russia. Off-hand remarks by Robert Peyton, manager of Agribusiness Partners International, a $100 million OPIC fund with investments in seven Russian plants, reveal the racket. Peyton said, "If the

-Caveat Lector- Environment Source: http://ens.lycos.com/ens/jan99/1999L-01-08-05.html Contrails Mystify, Sicken Americans By William Thomas SEATTLE, Washington, January 8, 1999 (ENS) - Contrails spread by fleets of jet aircraft in elaborate cross-hatched patterns are sparking speculation and making people sick across the United States. Washington state resident William Wallace became ill with severe diarrhea and fatigue after watching several multi-engine jets spend New Year's day laying cloud lines in an east to west grid pattern. A neighbor working outside came down with similar symptoms. But their wives, who remained indoors, suffered no ill effects from the inexplicable maneuvers which observers liken to high-altitude "crop-dusting" by unidentifed multi-engine aircraft. Series of aircraft contrails in a high traffic region over the northern Gulf of Mexico 1992 (Images courtesy NASA) Condensation trails, called contrails, are generated at altitudes high enough for water droplets to freeze in a matter of seconds and not quickly evaporate - typically where the temperatures are below -38 degrees Celcius. Contrails can form through the addition of water vapor to the air from the jet engine exhaust. Even tiny nuclei released in the exhaust fumes may be sufficient to generate ice crystals, and hence, condensation trails. Wallace wonders if ethylene dibromide, a highly toxic component of JP-8 jet fuel, is making people sick. Similar incidents over Las Vegas last year prompted a US Air Force spokesman to explain that the military aircraft were "dumping fuel" before landing. But the strange spray patterns are being reported repeatedly over towns in Tennessee, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Nevada, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, Washington state and California. Wallace has been watching formations of high-flying jets weave grid-like contrails above his home since last summer. Each time, "We get a taste in our mouth," he reports. He and his wife Ann get "kind of tired and sick," having "no energy to do anything." After plants began dying around his mountain cabin, "I got real sick for about three weeks," Wallace relates. "My eyes watered. Fluid came out of my nose. I could hardly move my arm up above my head to comb my hair for about a week." Wallace and his wife are not alone in their plight. In March, 1996, Dr. Greg Hanford bought an expensive camera and binoculars to keep an eye on jets spraying white bands above his Bakersfield, California home. Hanford has counted 40 or 60 jets on some "spray days." "Everybody seems to be getting sick from it," Hanford told ENS. "Hackin' and coughin' when you really get nailed with this stuff." The dentist, many of his patients and two receptionists have repeatedly contracted severe respiratory infections. Hanford's illness lingered for five months despite courses of four different antibiotics. "It's really weird," Hanford says. "You think two jets are going to hit each other - and then they make an X." The dentist says he has sometimes seen "furry globular balls" spread downwind in a long feather from the high-flying aircraft. Unlike normal contrails, which dissipate soon after a lone jet's passage, video taken by Wallace and Hanford show eerily silent silver jets streaming fat contrails from their wingtips in multiple, criss-cross patterns. But instead of dissipating like normal contrails, these white jet-trails coalesce into broad cloud-bands that gradually occlude crystal clear skies. "Passenger jets don't make contrails that stay and become clouds," Wallace observes. Government officials deny that anything unusual is taking place. When Hanford called the local airport, tower personnel told him there was nothing going on." The jets were "just commercial" undergoing "international flight training." But a skeptical Hanford responded, "Is the FAA going to allow two jets to come at each other?" Pseudo-color, multispectral images taken April 20, 1994 by a NOAA satellite, reveal a number of contrails over Oklahoma and Kansas. X'es, overlapping W's and the Roman numeral XII are among the patterns flown by the mystery aircraft. Last June, Hanford watched four aircraft spraying in circles to form a perfect bulls-eye. Through his Swaroski binoculars, Hanford could see what "looked like a 737" painted all-white on top with an "orangish-red" underbody and red engine cowlings. Another 727-like aircraft was painted "all-white with a black stripe up the middle of fuselage." None of the planes carried identifying markings. Pat Edgar has been watching the jets spraying over eastern Oklahoma since a sunny day in October, 1977 when as many as 30 contrails gradually occluded the sky. "They look like they're playing tic-tac-toe up there," he says. "You know darn well it's not passenger planes." Edgar says he has watched "cobwebbing stuff coming down" from the zigzagging jets flying "all day long, line after line, back-and-forth, like furrows in a farm

-Caveat Lector- On Sun, 10 Jan 1999 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: There are several things that I am now confused on. I don't understand how evidence of a crime not a part of the original indictment could be brought, It shouldn't == UNLESS a witness lets 'something slip'...then that witness's testimony becomes part of the record...and as I pointed out in a prior post, the only thing the SENATE can do, no matter HOW many charges are levied against the president or their severity, is to vote to remove him from office... But...if Monica Lewinsky is called to testify, and happens to mention that Clinton was snorting coke on a couple of occasions during their trysts...or that she overheard a conversation between Bill and a Chinese bigwig where Bill promised state secrets in exchange for sizeable donations...if Linda Tripp lets out something regarding Ron Brown...if Kathleen Willey mentions something about Vince Foster... Well, you get the picture...suddenly, the Senate has testimony which, in theory, they could use to request ADDITIONAL witnesses to provide corraborating testimony and perhaps evidence of these allegations... Again, the most they can do is vote to remove Clinton...but if they get any of this additional stuff testified on, it lays the groundwork for possible criminal proceedings against Clinton after he is removed from office...and perhaps possible criminal proceedings against some other important personages, too... unless that evidence was in support also of the crimes being charged, ie perjury and obstruction. Should such evidence be admitted, The Senate trial can admit anything they please, since it isn't a criminal trial...they could decide to listen to testimony that Clinton didn't get a required license for his dog Buddy, if they wanted to... but when it comes to the final vote, they'd only be able to vote on the actual charges, e.g. perjury and obstruction of justice... But that's not to say the D.C. dogwarden couldn't then turn around and slap the Clinton's with a fine for not licensing their dog... I would think that it would lead to a separate indictment, either other articles of impeachment or indictment in criminal court. Exactly. It'd be highly unlikely that they'd try to draw up additional articles of impeachment, the practical route would be that if damning evidence of something like treason gets introduced into the Senate trial, Clinton's Democratic supporters in the Senate would be hard pressed to keep defending him, and will probably swing towards voting to remove him from office on the perjury and obstruction of justice charges...and let the other stuff be brought up in a possible criminal indictment afterwards... According to the Constitution, a president can not be criminally indicted until after he is out of office, either via the natural ending of his term, or via impeachment... By the way, does anyone know if the concept of double jeopardy applies to impeachment? Probably it doesn't, since it isn't a CRIMINAL proceeding... Could the President be impeached twice? There is nothing in the Constitution to preclude it...but in practice, it would be highly unlikely to happen, to Clinton or any OTHER president... The Constitution says something like, ...not to exceed removal from office. This would indicate that the Senate could do any number of things as punishment but leave him in office. "Says something like"??? In cases like this, one should make it a point to find out the EXACT wording "The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. However, when the Articles arrived at the Senate they contained the wording, "and removal from office." Are you saying that since the Articles contain this wording this precludes any other action by the Senate? I might not be up to date on this little wrinkle. [CTRL] DISAPPEARED NEWS
-Caveat Lector- I noticed another post of mine forwarded here, so if this was already posted, please forgive duplication. DISAPPEARED NEWS - THE ORWELLIAN NIGHTMARE (c) (01/07/99) Ian Williams Goddard One of the more disturbing issues surrounding the TWA Flight 800 crash has been the claims made by some people that on the night of the crash they saw reports on TV that confirmed a missile hit, yet the reports apparently disappeared into an Orwellian black hole. NOW a news cameraman has spilled-the-beans on one of these disappeared TV reports, indicating that what people have been saying they saw on TV really was on TV. People have claimed they saw an interview right after the crash of an Air National Guard pilot as he stood on a tarmac in front of an aircraft where the pilot said the jet was hit with a missile and that Navy-missile exercises were being conducted at the time. Consistent with such an interview, the Long Island paper Suffolk Life reports [1]: "Long Island's Channel 55 cameraman James Hughes, said during an interview that he and another camera crew from one of the networks were at the airport when the C130 landed. The crew, he said, stated they saw a missile heading toward FL800 just before they witnessed the explosion. The C130 crew members were pulled away from the two camera crews by what Hughes said appeared to be their superiors and came back claiming they had seen nothing." This not only confirms TV-witness accounts of a truth-leaking interview of a pilot at an airport, but it also clearly indicates that the truth was known that night and, with the immediate censure of the pilots, it also reveals that a massive cover-up was activated immediately, which must explain why the media forgot about that explosive interview. (The C-130 was piloted by Col. William Stratemeier. Major Frederick Meyer, who said he saw a meteor-like streak, piloted an HH-60 helicopter. After retiring from the ANG, Meyer said that the first blast looked like "the detonation of an anti-aircraft shell."[2]) It would seem that if military command says forget that news, it is forgotten and any who remember it and/or who believe what those pilots said they saw are smeared by the GovtMedia as lairs, criminals, or nuts... as one who might have to be locked away. The evidence suggests military control of society. Maybe that's why the same week Pierre Salinger's report came out CNN reported [3]: "The FBI this week launched a criminal investigation, hoping to stop missile theorists." The government of a civil nation does not activate "criminal investigations" to "STOP THEORISTS" (!!), but the U.S. Govt does! MORE CONFIRMATION OF PILOTS INTERVIEW The sudden change of the pilots story is consistent with a report from Aviation Week Space Technology [4] that the ANG C-130 pilot "said he had seen what appeared to be the trail of a shoulder-fired SAM ending in a flash on the 747," and then in the next issue, Aviation Week reports that the pilot had a sudden change of mind, now saying: "We did not see smoke trails [from a missile], any ignition source from the tail end of a rocket nor anything..." [5] And the media filmed the witness intimidation [1]: "The C130 crew members were pulled away from the two camera crews by what Hughes said appeared to be their superiors and came back claiming they had seen nothing." Anyone capable of rational thought can see (a) that the military pilots were pressured to say they did NOT see what they'd ALREADY said they saw, and (b) that this is prima facie evidence of a cover-up, and (c) specifically, a cover-up of a missile hit. If X says he saw a missile hit P, and then X gets a talking-to by superiors, and then X says he did NOT see a missile hit P, one of his two statements must be false and it stands to reason that it's the second. If the media taped those pilots changing their story under pressure and yet forget that event and portray those who believe there's a cover-up as nuts liars, then the media are choosing to promote the cover-up. THE MAJOR MEDIA: VOICE OF THE MILITARY STATE If the media could forget about a widely-televised interview of military pilots saying FL800 was hit by a missile, pilots who are then quickly whisked away by superiors only to return saying they saw nothing, could we trust the major media to report it if someone with inside information contacted them with a major scoop? If they'd cover-up the former, they should also cover-up the latter. In fact, when James Sanders gave CBS a patch of the rocket-fuel-covered seat cushion [6] so that they too could test it, CBS gave it to the FBI instead and then assisted with the

-Caveat Lector- I have a black friend who grew up down south, having to watch the local KKK'rs walk by her house -- in full regalia -- going to and from their meetings...and being made to smile and wave to them...I can tell you, KKK is alive and well in the north, couple years ago there was a demonstration, in Racine..heck that was broadcasted nationally don't you remember ? I have newspaper accounts telling about their meetings and such in Wisconsin, and Illinois. You want me to get them out ? SHE and her family were NOT content, but knew what they had to do to keep from being lynched and their house burned down... Again, blacks were and are discriminated up north, we can not discount that as being national...you got to remember when the slaves were freed there were no allowances made for them. The north was becoming industralized, there were no unions and the black labor force, this new labor force was a threat to those up here. Besides that many of our soldiers had died, for the preservation of the Union, and the freeing of the slaves...there was bitterness that their loved ones were gone, that communities disappeared due to this war. There's a reason they moved up North...because the South didn't provide them the opportunities in employment the North did, because of their race... There were many laws enacted prohibiting them to move into certain stateslook at the demographics how many blacks live in the south compared to the north. Everyone of them supposedly had the opportunity to move up north, by what you said, percentage wise how many did ? We worked together Black and White to plant and clear the crops since most of the able bodied men were still at war. -You still see this black and whites working together peacefully, respectfully...in the south. There is a percentage that is always more noticeable and vocal than the majority, and that is what one has to go by. I'm sure blacks were given equal opportunity to plant clear fields -- for someone else. How many blacks OWNED this property they worked on...? The major slave holder in the South was a freed black man from La, do you want name and details...can get them. How many blacks were allowed to take over important office and factory jobs, supervisory and managerial positions, when the 'able bodiedmen' (black men WEREN'T 'able bodied'?) were away at war? Blacks had joined the Confederate Army and fought right along side the rest, they got paid the same...up north the white soldier got $13 a month, and the black got $10 a month It is not regional Well he must have been a pistol, because isn't he the guy who was making love to a lady in one of the White House cloakrooms while his guards held off his wife who was trying to get in to attack them? -Caveat Lector- In a message dated 1/8/99 6:23:50 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Sometimes people would rather "be taken care of" than face life's uncertainties armed only with their own skills and decision-making abilities. Welcome back, Hawk. Many of us missed hearing your arguments however we disagreed because your supporting evidence offered something to get one's teeth into. I'm not sure what to say regarding your remarks concerning the scriptures since, apparently, some are grievously offended by any mention of spiritual or moral matters - at least they are offended when scriptures are referenced as opposed to, say, Urantia channeled baloney. I will only point out that we are directed away from legalism and toward general principles so i am puzzled by your statement that the principles cannot be applied in the specific. It seems to me that they could then never be applied. I am reminded of something a priest said at a class for the general public on biblical exegesis. The priest was British and supposedly a scholar of considerable talent. (Incidentally, this class was free, a not uncommon event in those days of the 60s.) He sarcastically said that whenever the bureaucrats or politicians of Britain commented on the golden rule and other such, they would say, "Well, that's all well and good but one cannot run an empire on ideals." Of course, at this time the empire had already dissolved. You speak of the slave mentality and i know that it lives in many people. However, IMO the root of it is in oppression. When folks get so frustrated and despair of being allowed to do, they sometimes sort of give up and go along with the notion that if something good is going to happen, it must come from massah (the corporation, government, church, et al). Of course this is not confined to actual ex-slaves. You ask about what state had the removal of thumbs as punishment for learning to read. The plantations were in the bush. The law was massah and vice versa. When you read the narratives of the ex-slaves your eyes are opened. The law is irrelevant when it is not available and when the entire economy depended upon supporting massah's heroic efforts to keep everyone in their place. Literate thinking slaves are an obvious threat. Why do you think our own news media is so carefully controlled? The weak spot in the plantation was the owner's children, their eagerness to share what they know and show off at the same time. When a slave learned to read, he taught others. When a plantation had more than, say, a score of slaves, they would meet at night in culverts or ditches with the overhead covered with branches and twigs. They told each other about what was going on, 10 pair of eyes in different places could see a lot. With good fortune, one would teach reading. When a slave stopped overnight attached to plantation visitors, they could hear about things far away and give information in return. These underground schools were vital to the encouragement that comes from camaraderie. The above remark applies to prayer also. Bear in mind that each plantation had its own way to deal with issues in the slave community, namely massah's way. A few, especially the large plantations with hundreds of slaves, were relatively liberal and followed their own house rules fairly consistently. Jefferson Davis ran one of these operations. Most plantation owners were rather harsh. Economics led the most intelligent owners to give their slaves just enough sustenance and rest to maintain the work. The photographs of the slaves tell the story by their faces. Jerry Apparently, many of the owners were as ignorant as the slaves about prayer. It was common for owners to forbid prayer, possibly because they did not want their slaves to have either hope or comfort or maybe because the owners really were nervous about the slaves communicating with the living god. The slaves, who like the owners apparently never heard of silent prayer or believed it ineffective, would speak their prayers into a tub of water to muffle it. Re: [CTRL] Impeachment and Clinton
-Caveat Lector- In a message dated 1/10/99 2:29:32 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: (snip beginning) I can't disagree with you (I rarely do) I only assume that you are right, that the Senate can do pretty much anything that it wants since it's not a criminal trial and there's not much precedent for presidential impeachment trials. It just seems that bringing evidence, including slips of the tongue by witnesses, would turn the whole thing into a circus. Don't get me wrong though, I would like to see it come down just as you describe. I've said long ago that the Democrats' worst nightmare is having to actually vote on this thing. Of course I felt that this would apply to the committee hearings first, but that came out down party lines. Then I figured that there would be more honest Dems who would vote for impeachment in the House. Wrong again. So, with limited testimony and limited evidence presented in an abbreviated trial, we can expect the same thing - Slick will slide. The only hope is that the scenario that you hope for plays out and then it will only be effective if it changes public opinion. This is what the Dems most fear. In my opinion a charge of treason could be proved conclusively in this trial and if the polls didn't change, nothing more would happen. Even if all hell breaks loose in the trial, as you and I hope, you'd probably have to have people go around to 90% of the homes in the US and physically lock their TV sets onto C-Span. BTW, yes I'm aware that the Republicans are just as slimey as the Democrats, they just happen to be lucky enough to be on the right side of this particular issue. The Constitution says something like, ...not to exceed removal from office. This would indicate that the Senate could do any number of things as punishment but leave him in office. They don't have to kick him out of office. What I was wondering was whether the wording in the Articles of Impeachment mandated removal. See above. However, when the Articles arrived at the Senate they contained the wording, "and removal from office." Are you saying that since the Articles contain this wording this precludes any other action by the Senate? I might not be up to date on this little wrinkle. The Senate could decide to put a dunce cap on Clinton and make him sit in the corner...but it's highly unlikely...especially if even more damning stuff comes out in the trial, the Senate would be hardpressed to do anything but to agree to remove him from office based on the charges sent to them... But do you know this for sure? However, it's probably not a very important point. Starr has supposedly agreed not to pursue a criminal trial if there is a censure agreement. So they appoint another independent prosecutor... It's highly unlikely that if evidence of something like TREASON comes out in the Senate trial, that the matter would just be dropped if Clinton's removed from office... Do you think that they could effectively appoint another special prosecuter against Clinton? On something like treason? Sure. June = Anyway, keep on daydreaming! I am too. It's just that I'm getting awakened too often. Thanks, Jim DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list. Proselyzting propagandic screeds are not allowed. Part of the book-some say the most interesting part-was titled "Agents, Opportunists and Fools." It attempted to link the CIA and the corporate establishment to several individuals and institutions connected with Ms. Magazine, hardly frightening material for the publishers, through a subsidiary, Knopf, of The CIA and the Intelligence. Feminist Revolution had passed an initial libel reading by Random House's legal department on March 2nd, and a contract was signed in the office that March morning. 20,000 copies of the book were scheduled to hit the stores in June. That afternoon, an unannounced visitor appeared in the citadel of the free press. A presumably angry Gloria Steinem asked to see Random House president Robert Bernstein. She was there to hand-deliver a letter from her attorney threatening to sue for libel unless the chapter on the CIA was removed from the book. No one knows what Steinem and Bernstein said in their private meeting, and it may have been just coincidence that, within weeks Random House was blitzed with similar threats from other people and groups mentioned in the CIA chapter: Clay Felker, Women's Action AlIiance, Warner Communications, Franklin Thomas, the Overseas Education Fund of the League of Women Voters, and Katherine Graham. But, in any case, publication of Feminist Revolution was delayed nearly 3 years; the printing run was cut to 12,500, despite 13,000 advance orders; and when the book was finally released last month, the chapter on Gloria Steinem and the CIA had been deleted in its entirety. Somehow, the word "abridged" on the cover fails to answer the question: What happened? On March 21st, of this year, 6 weeks after Feminist Revolution was finally published, 5 members of Redstockings held a press conference to argue that their book would be better described as "censored." Katie Sarachild, Colette Price, Carol Hanisch, Sherry Lipsky, and Jane Barry said that at first they had been astonished that Random House caved into pressure to ax the chapter. But they also laid the blame on Steinem and her associates for using "libel" claims to stifle debate within the women's movement and to suppress embarrassing information about themselves. Price pointed out that the Zenger trial, which launched the American tradition of freedom of the press, was a libel case. The near-total blackout on the Steinem/Random House censorship story is reminiscent of the level of enthusiasm Redstockings encountered when they first tried to get coverage for the story of Steinem and the CIA. Their 16-page tabloid "press release" charging that Steinem had covered up a 10-year association with the CIA and that Ms. magazine, which she had founded, was endangering the women's liberation movement struck the 1975 MORE conference like a new war coming over the wire. The hotel was abuzz and people snatched up the releases, but when it came to actually writing the story, nearly everyone bowed out. One reporter criticized the women for not obtaining Steinem's side of the story before publishing the release. Others skimmed the material and dismissed it as old news, which was partially true. Still others thought it was McCarthyistic both in tone and casual conclusions. In 1967 both the New York Times and the Washington Post carried interviews with Steinem in the wake of Ramparts' expose of CIA funding of the National Student Association and other organizations. Steinem was the founder and director of one of those groups, Independent Research Service, for which she had solicited and obtained
[CTRL] Fighting the Cultural War
-Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.zolatimes.com/V3.2/pageone.html"Laissez Faire City Times - Volume 3 Issue 2/A The Laissez Faire City Times January 11, 1999 - Volume 3, Issue 2 Editor Chief: Emile Zola - Fighting the Cultural War by Sunni Maravillosa At the Libertarian Party of Colorado convention some years ago, science fiction author L. Neil Smith made a comment that gets repeated in various circles: "You can't fight a cultural war if you ain't got any culture" [1]. Since then, I've seen it interpreted in various ways, one of the most frequent being that the freedom movement doesn't have much of a popular culture. It's also become a convenient excuse: "More libertarians would get elected if our ideas were in the mainstream culture more often"; "We have the best ideas but they're hard to demonstrate"; and "You can't reduce the freedom philosophy to sound bites" are some of the more common ones I've heard, in various forms. Libertarian memes don't get much TV time, but I think that's actually to our benefit--most people seem to turn off their brains when sitting in front of the television. Some folks, desperate for any sign that pop culture acknowledges our existence, cheer each movie that has any hint of a libertarian idea, no matter how fleeting. For example, Independence Day and Mars Attacks have been proclaimed "libertarian films" because in them the White House gets blown up, and the aliens kill Congress, respectively. While these may be among the fond wishes of some libertarians, an anti-government attitude is hardly exclusive to those of us who value freedom. Some truly pro-freedom films exist, and more certainly would help our cause. However, I don't think the large and small screens are the best places to plant our ideas: by and large watching television and movies is a mind-numbing activity that disables higher thought processes. Fiction is fertile ground for spreading pro-freedom ideas--one look at the continued success of Ayn Rand's novels attests to that. The only genre with authors who seem to recognize this is science-fiction writers like L. Neil Smith and F. Paul Wilson have continued in Heinlein's tradition of creating new worlds and universes to explore the implications of the freedom philosophy. They typically do so in ways that are so engaging that it's easy to overlook the political ideas amid all the action, but the ideas don't go away. Many pro-freedom individuals credit these authors, among others, with showing them the value of free minds and free markets. Unfortunately, many people turn up their noses at science fiction, and, with few exceptions, general fiction doesn't contain freedom-oriented themes. The area that is arguably the most overlooked by those who bemoan the lack of a "freedom culture" is mainstream music. Believe it or not, if one looks, one can find strong individualist and other libertarian themes in music that gets airplay around the world, every day. This shouldn't be too surprising; after all, it was the music of the 1960s that helped propel the anti-war, do-your-own-thing ideology of that generation into the Peace and Love movement. Interestingly, even though many of the singers and songwriters of that time proclaimed their socialist ideals, in their rebellion against authority they often expressed sentiments that make libertarians grin. Perhaps one of the best-known examples is from The Who's song "Going Mobile": "watch the police and the tax man miss me, I'm mobile!" [2] The Beatles, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and the Moody Blues are all examples of popular groups of the 60s whose politics were socialist or collectivist, yet contained anti-government or pro-individual lyrics in their songs. In today's music, the message is more often than not clearer--and louder. Yes, the bastion of loud, liberal, sex-worshipping, irritate-your-parents music has a number of bands who eschew the juvenile content for more meaty themes. Rock music still has its share of performers who fall into the same mixed-message category as the 60's groups mentioned above--Sting, Pink Floyd, and John Mellencamp come to mind--but there are other groups who don't seem to have this dichotomy in their songs. The Canadian band Rush is arguably the most libertarian band around. Sometimes described as progressive rock or "hard" rock, Rush resists categorization. The trio--Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart-- weave intricate music around lyrics (almost all by Neil Peart) that almost always warm a freedom-lover's heart. In their early days, the influence of Ayn Rand was clear; an album was titled Anthem, as was a pro- individual song, and the liner notes of the album 2112 contain the credit "with acknowledgement [sic] to the genius of Ayn Rand" [3]. The song "2112" is a musical interpretation of Rand's Anthem. None of the band members claims to be libertarian, yet each release (over 15 studio releases in the band's 24-year existence thus far) contains lyrics sure to please

-Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.zolatimes.com/V3.2/pageone.html"Laissez Faire City Times - Volume 3 Issue 2/A The Laissez Faire City Times January 11, 1999 - Volume 3, Issue 2 Editor Chief: Emile Zola - Face to Face, We're All Geminis a book review by William Westmiller Having been born on June 1st, my astrologic sign is Gemini. The Twins constellation suggests a dual personality. Happy and sad, strong and weak, intelligent and passionate. A proverbial incarnation of the conflicting passions in life. Granting even the smallest credence to the influence of the stars on our lives, I've never met anyone - no matter their birth sign - who wasn't a complex, ever-changing, multifaceted and occasionally conflicted personality. If duality is the criteria, perhaps we're all Geminis. Dualism is a slightly strained effort to comprehend ourselves and society. The distinct emotional and intellectual features we can identify do seem to have degrees, from nearly nothing to the dominance of one characteristic over others. Occasionally, for short periods in our lives, one of those sentiments or inclinations will dominate all others. For good reasons, we'll be timid, even fearful, about our future. Then, in a new context, swing to the extreme of strength, even bravery, in pursuing our dreams. The same occurs with intellectual talents and inclinations. This duality never concerns us at the time, simply because we are fully in the context of our own sentiments. However, when we review them in the abstract, or in the society at large, they seem different. In the abstract, we tend to personify those temporary inclinations as incarnate drives that propel us toward either good or evil. When we consider the extreme poles of emotion and intellect, we fault the devil for our failures and praise divinity for our successes. It seems to add sense to our world to imagine some insuperable force of dualism at work than to understand all the complexities in our lives or in society. So we enjoy neat dualist categories of rich versus poor, conservative versus liberal, strong versus week, libertarian versus totalitarian, arts versus science, or Republican versus Democrat. In her new book, The Future And Its Enemies, Virginia Postrel (editor of Reason magazine) coins her own social dualism, the dynamists versus the stasists. Dynamists are, of course, the friends of the future, demonstrating creativity, enterprise and progress. Happy to have everything always changing all the time. With prolific empirical evidence, she makes the case for allowing these dynamic forces to flow freely. On the other hand are the stasists, those tired, old stick-in-the-muds, who want to suppress or control everything and everybody. Dynamists are our salvation and stasists are our damnation. We would probably all agree, to one extreme or another, with nearly all the examples she presents, but Postrel's dualism suffers the same fault as any. Even the most dynamic among us wants to lay down in a comfortable bed at night, confident that our home is secure, dependent on some prolonged serenity for a peaceful sleep. Even the most temperate and cautious among us will indulge in a passionate art form or apply ourselves to solving a vexing problem. It's no surprise that we are all part-time dynamists or stasists, in nearly every respect. We are all Geminis. Postrel documents a broad assortment of dynamic social and political heroes. And she's always correct. Fostering an environment that allows playful novelties and astounding innovations is a good thing. Many people do marvelous things in wondrous ways. But Postrel begs off any ethical criteria or political guidelines for creating such an environment. In a stiff journalistic commentary, she skips thorough a continuous string of authorities and copious references that get in the way of her clear convictions about justice, liberty and rights, which are always evident in her writing and editing of Reason magazine. Her book itemizes a range of opinions about dynamic rules and guidelines, but lacks the vitality of a central ethical premise. At times, she almost proposes that the means justify the ends, that dynamism forces always lead to favorable outcomes. The dynamic versus stasist dualism falls far short of being an inspirational nostrum. Dynamic human conduct can be a boon to our lives, or a scourge. People can do terrible things with disastrous consequences in a very dynamic way. Temperance, caution, and skepticism can be stasist virtues when it comes to the beneficial evolution of the human condition. Perhaps the other dualisms are equally unsatisfactory. In the context of our lives, we all push and pull, swing and sway, between extremes. Since we're all Geminis, both facets make the whole life, where moderation is the norm, if not the rule. In spite of the grand premise, there emerges some passion and delightful exuberance in Chapter Seven, "Fields Of Play". Postrel almost succumbs to a hearty

-Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.zolatimes.com/V3.2/pageone.html"Laissez Faire City Times - Volume 3 Issue 2/A The Laissez Faire City Times January 11, 1999 - Volume 3, Issue 2 Editor Chief: Emile Zola - The Trans-Asian Express by Richard S. Ehrlich Asia Correspondent BANGKOK, Thailand -- In the beginning of the 20th century, the famous Orient Express crossed Europe and rumbled into Istanbul, but despite its exotic name, the train never reached the bamboo gardens and mystical pagodas of destinations here in eastern Asia. Hollywood recreated the train in the film, "Murder on the Orient Express," which hypnotized movie audiences in a plot of aisle-busy intrigue. But even when the train was later resurrected in 1982 as a real-life Venice Simplon-Orient Express, it still couldn't help passengers in Italy who wanted to continue traveling past Turkey. Today, however, people bagpiping atop the chilly highlands of Scotland, or basking in sunny Singapore, are looking forward to the completion of train tracks finally linking their two platforms. Scotland to Singapore by rail? The trip would be a clickity-clacking journey of more than 9,500 miles (15,200 kilometers). Enthusiastic engineers and officials here in Asia are already trying to overcome gritty wars, green jungles and giant gaps, so the trains can run on time. The difficult drilling of an underwater tunnel is also being planned. Actually, two railway journeys are envisaged: a northern route linking Korea, via Moscow, with Europe. And a southern track connecting the Malay Peninsula with the United Kingdom, curving across the Indian subcontinent. Trainspotters, traders and tourists would be able to travel on a previously impossible journey nearly half-way around the world. All in the comfort of a seat-cum-sleeper carriage. In the dining car, you could munch a spicy cuisine and other delights, depending upon your latest longitude. This so-called Trans-Asian Railway would straddle a massive continent never before girdled by steel. When you do climb aboard, be prepared to change trains several times, because Asian nations use different gauge-widths of track. As a result, some trains are thinner than others. Even a fully financed Trans-Asian Railway would not have enough money to replace all the existing tracks to standardize the route. Fortunately, an elaborate metal spaghetti almost links Singapore with the old Orient Express film-fare destination, Istanbul. The blank spots are, however, very, very vexing. Start From Singapore Starting from Singapore is the easy part. If you have major cash to splash, The Eastern Oriental Express, inaugurated in 1993, offers its 30 million US dollar "museum on wheels" to transport you north through Malaysia and up to Bangkok -- the sometimes clamorous, often glamorous, capital of Thailand. The "E and O" is a sister of the Venice Simplon-Orient Express, and recreates an opulent flash-from-the-past Asian train journey. Inspired by its success, the Eastern Oriental Express recently introduced an extension of its route north from Bangkok to Thailand's tourist-friendly town of Chiang Mai. Less extravagant passengers can book relatively inexpensive tickets from Singapore to Thailand on normal government-owned trains, which take the same rail lines. No matter which class you travel, be sure to eye the outside of Kuala Lumpur's Moorish-inspired central railway station -- created in what the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism hypes as "Byzantine Arabian nights" architecture -- because it displays a flourish of domes, minarets and arches. Further north, you pass through Malaysia's cool Cameron Highland, and up the leg of southern Thailand. From Bangkok, a western leg will take you toward Burma's border, halting in Kanchanaburi where the Death Railway's bridge of World War Two is now a pilgrimage site for traumatized former prisoners of war, elderly Japanese guards, and other tourists and scholars. At the Death Railway bridge, anxious wayfarers point to the Trans-Asian Railway's first real gap: how to get further west from Thailand, across France-sized Burma, and into Bangladesh? Engineers would have to patch a route across the jungle-covered, rebel-infested, Thai-Burma border. That future link would be met by a line coming from Rangoon which is slowly being extended south toward Kanchanaburi. Unfortunately, the new sections joining Burma's coastal towns of Ye and Tavoy reportedly use forced, corvee labor because the unelected Burmese military regime insists "volunteer" work crews are a "tradition." Eventually, however, you will pull into the Burmese capital, Rangoon, where colonial-era, British-laid tracks run straight north to the central city of Mandalay, and beyond. Burma's trains continue climbing north, paralleling the Irrawaddy River, to Mogaung town, near Myitkyina. Additional construction for another 180 miles (288 kilometers) or so, due north through Kachin state, would enable a

The history of FEMA as an illegal unconstitutional entity has been most recently exposed in an unprecedented lawsuit against the CIA and its alleged drug trafficking and money laundering operations. In September 1998 a $63 million lawsuit (Case No. 98CV11829JLT) was filed by Massachusetts attorney Ray Kohlman on behalf of former Green Beret Bill Tyree. Kohlman, a former legal investigator for attorney William Pepper in the Martin Luther King murder trial of James Earl Ray, filed a 101-page complaint on behalf of his client. The suit, replete with five inches of affidavits and appendices, names the Central Intelligence Agency, former Massachusetts Governor A. Paul Celucci, former Massachusetts Attorney-General Scott Harshbarger, former CIA director and US President George Bush and self-admitted government assassin D. Gene Tatum as defendants in a far-reaching case involving US Government sanctioned drug smuggling, murder, and coverup. Bill Tyree is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife -- a case eerily similar to that of Dr. Jeffrey McDonald, a Ft. Bragg doctor who was framed for the murder of his wife and children in the early 1980s. "In the mid 1970s, while serving in Panama, Tyree and other Green Berets were led into Colombia under the command of Green Beret Colonels Cutolo and Baker to plant radio beacons, so that plane loads of cocaine could fly below Colombian and US radar, and land undetected in Panama," writes former LAPD officer Mike Ruppert in his newsletter (From the Wilderness, P. O. Box 6061-350, Sherman Oaks, CA 91413, http://www.copvcia.com). "Orders for these missions came from the CIA's Ed Wilson and Tom Clines," continues Ruppert. "Tyree had been a part of many secret missions and was losing his taste for it. His wife was keeping a diary [for which she was presumably murdered, and which later disappeared]." "Five Special Forces Colonels -- Cutolo, Baker, Malvesti, Rower and Bayard -- have died under mysterious circumstances since. The heart of the Tyree documentation consists of an affidavit allegedly written by Colonel Cutolo who was also Tyree's commanding officer at Fort Devens, Mass. at the time of Tyree's arrest. Both were then with the 10th Special Forces." "That fifteen page document gives precise details of CIA drug operations using Special Forces personnel. It also describes how Tyree was framed for the murder of his wife and how Special Forces personnel were used to intimidate and conduct illegal electronic and physical surveillance of anyone who might expose CIA drug dealing." According to the complaint in the lawsuit, "the Plaintiff [Tyree] alleges that the Defendants CIA and George Bush were negligent and failed at the conclusion of Operation Watchtower to monitor the post-Watchtower events and seek legal congressional funding for the origination of FEMA (Federal Emergency Managemnt Agency), and this failure led to the concealment and coverup of Operation Watchtower, written about in the diaries of Elaine Tyree, seized illegally and turned over to Colonel Carone and then to the CIA, which ensured that the Operation Watchtower drug trafficking operation would remain covert, allowing the drug profits from this Operation to be used to circumvent Congress and fund FEMA and continue the pattern of criminal activity." Colonel Carone, who died in 1990, was a CIA paymaster and Mafia-connected money launderer, who incidentally held the rank of full colonel in Army Intelligence. As Oliver North's bagman, he also couriered large amounts of cash in and out of the country. Carone's Complex Relationships According to former FAA investigator Rodney Stich, "Carone had complex relationships." In his underground bestselling book Defrauding America: Encyclopedia of Secret Operations by the CIA, DEA, and Other Covert Agencies, Stich writes that Carone "was a member of the Gambino family with connections to other crime groups in the eastern part of the United States, a detective on the New York City vice squad, a member of the military and a CIA operative." Stich writes that "Dee [Ferdinand, Carone's daughter] said her father was a detective and bagman in the New York City police department, collecting money that was distributed to captains and inspectors as payoffs for looking the other way where drugs were involved..." "Referring to CIA-Mafia drug trafficking, she said she knew from what her father said that the drugs coming from South America, went to the Colombo, Genovese and Gambino families, and that it was a joint CIA-Mafia drug

This will change in 1999. The Ukrainian question will be a major focus of international attention this year, creating stresses within Europe and between the United States and Russia. The issue: will Ukraine join the Russo-Belarus federation. We think economic forces will force Ukraine to federate with Russia. With this, Russian power will return to the frontiers of central Europe from the Black Sea to Carpathians to the Baltic. If Ukraine refuses to federate, Russia will not be able to reassert itself. If it does, there will be no buffer between NATO and greater Russia. The Ukrainian question is going to become front page news in the not too distant future, dwarfing Serbia and Iraq in significance, if not in violence. Analysis: We argued in our 1999 annual forecast that the fate of Ukraine would be one of the critical issues of 1999. We believe that Ukraine will rejoin Russia and Belarus in a Federation. This may not occur in 1999, but the process is already underway, and we believe it is very likely that Ukraine's return to the Russian embrace shortly thereafter. If and when it happens, it will reshape the geopolitics of Eurasia. Since Ukraine is not a nation that most people outside of the region think about very much, we think it useful to focus on it this week and to try to forecast its probable course. Let's begin by recapitulating why we think Ukraine will loom large among issues in 1999. Russia has reached the end of the reform cycle. It is experiencing a massive economic depression, has lost not only its global influence but also territories that Moscow and St. Petersburg ruled for centuries. This is not simply a matter of prestige, although the psychological effect of the loss of empire must not be dismissed, nor should the political consequences of the psychological crisis. Nevertheless, there are other, structural issues, primarily economic ones, which are driving things. The Soviet Union was never a particularly healthy economic entity. Nevertheless, more than most regions of the world, it was fairly self-enclosed. Until the late 1980s, the Soviet Bloc in general and the Soviet Union in particular were only marginally dependent on international trade or foreign investment. They existed as a virtual planet, separated economically from the general global economy. As a result, they lagged far behind the West in economic development. But while they lagged, they did not decline. Their economies and standards of living continued to develop, albeit unevenly, inefficiently, and far behind non-communist growth rates. This growth was due to the availability of secure markets, stable exchange rates, predictable cash flows within the boundaries of the Soviet Union and the communist trade zone called COMECON, which included most of communist Eastern Europe. A fully integrated regional economy, protected from the rest of the world by political, economic and monetary barriers, allowed for a sustainable if inferior rate of growth. The key to this was the availability of predictable markets in the region. The central assumption behind capitalism is that competition serves as a goad to maximize performance. Among nations, this theory manifests itself in the theory of comparative advantages. Every nation has a comparative advantage in some area. There are some things that each nation does best and if every nation sticks to it, then every nation will maximize its income. Competition forces a nation to find and stick to its comparative advantage. It is an excellent theory except in the case of nations whose advantage is insufficient to sustain a minimal, politically acceptable standard of living. When the borders of the old Soviet Union were thrown open, they now had to discover comparative advantages not in relation to each other, but in relation to Germany, France or the United States. The results weren't pretty. The expectation of western economists was that competitive pressure would compel former communist economies to become more productive. After a great deal of stress, this was true for countries like the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. These were the countries that had the greatest economic interaction with the West prior to the fall of communism, which meant that their economies had made necessary, if inadequate, adjustments. An influx of western investment allowed them to improve their industrial plant sufficiently so that, after a few years, they would enjoy sufficient competitive advantage to stabilize their economies and even begin to grow. My name is James Thomas Fleming, i former /i Project Coordinator of the National Intelligence Service. You have probably never heard of the NIS. It is not unlike the CIA, but I assure you its past is much darker. This is my story which I would recommend for everyone to read. br br The NIS is the most secretive government agency in existance. They conduct foreign and domestic intelligence operations, keep files on everyone (including you) and devise high technology for use in intelligence and weapons systems for the government. The NIS was created by executive order with the signing of the National Security Act of 1947. So secret was to be the nature of the NIS that its name was not even referred to in the text of the act - it exists due to a deliberate loophole in the language. They receive billions of dollars of defense funding annually, which is covered up by attributing it to other agencies, and various public service programs which do not actually exist. br br My background in government work found me at NIS headquarters in Washington D.C. one cold winter day. I was applying for a job through the advice of a friend of mine who worked there. The building was relatively small and unassuming. On the hazy glass of the door to the recruitment center was the seal of the NIS; an eagle with its wings spread, with thirteen stars representing the original colonies in a circular formation. The motto, "Vigilantis pretium Liberatis" - Vigilance is the price of Freedom. br br I was interviewed, given a polygraph and sent on my way. It was nothing new to a government guy like me. The next day I received a phone call saying that I had gotten the job as an operations specialist. br br For three years, I worked conducting counterintelligence activities. My background in psychology eventually got me assigned to the Behavioral Science Unit. At the BSU, we profiled foreign and domestic officials of particular interest and sent our findings on up the line. We were also given essentially free reign to conduct research at NIS general laboratories in Bethesda, MD. This was a mistake on the part of the agency - my collegues and I in the unit soon began to diverge off onto a path of research into what are known as "altered states" - we were interested in the possible forceful induction of hypnotic states by means of drugs and/or neural stimulation by means of light, sound and radiation. br br It was during this stage that we found a "magic bullet". In this case, it was a certain frequency and type of sound that causes instantanious depression of neurotransmitters in the higher regions of the brain. This, we found conclusively, effectively deactivated the conscious mind, reducing an individual to basic stimulus-response operations; not unlike an animal. br br We eagerly reported our research findings to the Assistant Project Coordinator. This was no small breakthrough in the field of psychology. In fact, the oversight commission had a special meeting just to learn of our findings. They were pleased, but wanted more research to be conducted before any operations applications were devised. Our experiments were acknowledged as an official project and assigned the codename TKREALM. br br So we began experiments on humans, as it was apparent that this system was only effective on them, and we didn't want to waste time with animal experiments. We posted a bogus add in the paper, asking for people who wanted to be models to appear for screening. We would take them each into a room, sit them down and tell them we'd be right back. Then the signal was turned on. Through a one-way mirror, we observed the subject slump in their seat, as though dead. Then we began conditioning them to perform tasks. First they were

[CTRL] chemical warfare against America #4
This is a basic welcome letter that I have for people dealing with ADD / ADHD I am going to follow this up with a URL that talks about CHADD. What I want to know (at the end of this is who funds CHADD?) The CIA? There are as many different ideas on ADD / ADHD as there are people giving them AND the possibilitythat many, if not all are right, at least to a degree. I know that helps. Many people would like to simply point their fingers at the parents or the school and say that is where the problem is. They are usually the ones that read IDEA to only mean that the child has mental difficulties because some one has not done their job. IDEA is much more than that. I received permission to post this: PUT ON THE SITE WITH PERMISSION *(New 18 Nov 98) How many schools have accommodations for students or teachers that are sensitive to the air in schools. like MCS or asthma? It is required under the IDEA.=20 I would like to find as many accommodation plans or Indoor Air Quality Policies or statements that are actually out there and working or at least trying to work, or at least written. This is a Pa. site, but the regulations are US wide. Also, please be advised that there are recent changes that are effective now that could affect parents filing for Due Process These changes are in the new IDEA. There is now a requirement on parents to notify the school district within a specified number of days of certain things, and also a requirement that the parent propose solution(s). you will need to check these new issues out ... I will look for some clearer info. on this. I may need to try to send you the specific section of the new IDEA that reflects these changes.1. http://www.cas.psu.edu/docs/pde/specialed/serights.html2. http://www.cisc.k12.pa.us/3. http://www.cisc.k12.pa.us/CISC.pgs/Region/CISCStaff.HTM Another question that I have is this: What mainstream illnesses are caused by or aggravated by poor air quality? Goodness only knows. I would mention ADD and brain fog as well as the usual respiratory and cancer stuff. PUT ON THE SITE WITH PERMISSION * Now you will hear about discipline, just be consistent and believe in yourself. You will be advised to start or continue behavioral modification (and I agree) but even though there may be some that have gotten off that lightly, that - that is all they have to do, it has become rare. But to not do it or to stop doing it, during this time expressly, can leave you at a very loose end if and when things suddenly come together. CHADD seems to be a good organization, NOW. They have had their hassles in the past (this is from 1995) and may have some in the future. http://www.pbs.org/merrow/scripts/text/add.txtThe only thing that I personally have against them is that they (seem) to base the issue of ADD / ADHD on mental (learning) ability and do not take (enough account) of nutrition, food, chemical, and scent reactions. That is what I have based my page on and what (most) of my children's personal journeys into this Alice In Neverland world of ADD / ADHD has been. I may end up stepping on someone's toes with the next statement BUT anyone that has been on this list for a while and all that have been on my web page know that I take the other side on the belief that ADD / ADHD could be genetic. So, hopefully they have used the delete button already since by saying ADD / ADHD is genetic they have already flamed my web page and me. Still, I believe that almost all ideas need a outlet, but until I see it recognized by the Human Genome Project I will continue to be skeptical. That disclaimer said. I am also dubious about terming ADD / ADHD a genetic, since I (personally) have yet to see a study that can back that up. What I have heard is that ADD / ADHD (can / seems to) run in families. I (personally) am working on the premise that the same family is eating the same food and around the same chemicals. Example: (most) everyone in the family might have a low grade reaction to the same cleaner, perfume or scent and some notice it more than others. This is can be expressly true of children. There is another group that I am on, made up of principals, students and parents that is looking at the air quality of their schools. So, where does that leave you? Probably where I was four years ago, frustrated! My (personal) web page is the result of the research that I have done. I sell nothing on the page and it is a bare bones, cut and paste research site. All The Best, Laura * Cable has tried to cut out PBS * copyright laws say that they help out the authors but some things do not get a wide audience because of those copyright laws * this says that CIBA-GEIGY (Before they were bought by Novartis) gave CHADD a large chunk of money. (Ciba-Geigy now Novartis owns the Ritalin patent) * I know that Ritalin helps cover up the effects of Aspartame and other chemical reactions that our

From Reuters Sunday January 10 12:48 AM ET Sex-For-Votes Claim In Salt Lake City Olympic Scandal SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - The Salt Lake City Olympic Committee, embroiled in a bribery scandal, faced new allegations Saturday that it paid for sex for International Olympic Committee members in a bid to win the 2002 Winter Games. Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt said an Ethics Committee in Salt Lake City was looking into allegations that Olympic bid committee credit cards were used to pay for sexual favors for IOC members. ``It would be enormously disheartening if it were true. I have no evidence to know if it is or it is not. I have in fact heard the rumor. I know that it among all the other allegations that are currently circulating will be investigated by the Ethics Committee,'' he told KSL, a local television station, late, Friday. ``If there's anything credible found of any of these rumors they will be fully, publicly and quickly disclosed,'' Leavitt said. The governor, who has been outspoken in his criticism of the improper payments, did not say if the credit cards were used for female escort services in Utah or abroad. Friday the head of the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee (SLOC), Frank Joklik, and another top executive, Dave Johnson, resigned after an investigation by the committee's lawyers found improper payments were made to win the Games. Four investigations, including one by the FBI and another headed by former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, are under way. Salt Lake, headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and known for its work ethic, sobriety and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, worked for 30 years to win a chance to host the Games, but the payments scandal has turned joy into a nightmare. Salt Lake City bid organizers paid for housing, travel, education, expensive gifts and even helped one IOC member put together a profitable real estate deal in Utah. Concerns are mounting that the scandal may pour cold water on sponsor enthusiasm and involvement. U S West, the regional telephone company, is withholding a $5 million payment until allegations are cleared up. There are concerns that corporate sponsors may not find it worthwhile to underwrite more than half of the $1.45 billion price tag to put on the Games, the Salt Lake Tribune said Saturday. -Caveat Lector- As a matter of fact there was --about ten years ago--an absolutely wonderful, hysterically funny, "cult" novel (meaning not a bestseller but appealing to a small group of dedicated readers) about Warren Harding set in Hollywoodand I think Warren Harding was in the titleand I can't, for the life of me, remember it's name. Re: [CTRL] Stampeding Bison
-Caveat Lector- Gerald Harp wrote: -Caveat Lector- Welcome back, Hawk. Many of us missed hearing your arguments however we disagreed because your supporting evidence offered something to get one's teeth into. Thanks for the welcome. That's an interesting question.. It seems to me that there are any number of "general summaries" or guidelines that "usually" apply... While I am not in agreement with the over-all thesis of "situation ethics," I do that that general principles may be over-ruled by specific guidelines. Let's say that it is a general rule that a soldier should obey his superior. However, there may be specific rules that speak to more carefully defined situations. If a superior officer tells Pvt. Peabody, "Strip that woman's clothing from her body and rape her," then Pvt. Peabody should be responsible enough to say that rape of a civilian by a soldier is prohibited by a specific rule. If the "general rule" is to obey the superior officer, and he superior officer says, toss a grenade into that building... BUT, the soldier knows that non-combatant women or children are hiding in there for safety, Pvt Peabody would be justified in refusing the order, which (under other circumstances) might be perfectly litigitimate. Thus, when a multitude of very specific guidelines are stated in which slave holders and slaves are instructed in the proper manner of conducting themselves in their relationship, and never once even an added footnote that "slavery is, after all, evil," then we cannot apply a general rule of treating people in a manner that we would like to be treated as covering that issue. In 1st John, for instance, there is a statement that "Christians don't sin." However, in the next few sentences, John talks about all kinds of sin that Christians are known to have committed (and are likely to again). It is somewhat along the lines of a father saying, "Son, you are a Smith... and we Smith's don't act that way," when the conversation was initiated precisely because a Smith was acting that way. Another passage comes to mind: "Answer NOT a fool according to his folly, lest you become like him," and in the very next verse, written by the same author, he goes on to say, "ANSWER a food according to his folly, lest he become wise in his own conceit." So, the actor's action may depend on the intended or anticipated result. To make this somewhat topical... Most of us would say that lying is a bad sociological action... and most of us would tell our children that one should not lie. However, in some circumstances lying might be the proper thing to do... after all, what is camoflage, if it isn't an attempt to deceive someone (usually someone bent on killing you)? You speak of the slave mentality and i know that it lives in many people. However, IMO the root of it is in oppression. When folks get so frustrated and despair of being allowed to do, they sometimes sort of give up and go along with the notion that if something good is going to happen, it must come from massah (the corporation, government, church, et al). Of course this is not confined to actual ex-slaves. Right.. having once been a private in the Army, I understand the concept. If one's dedication to self-discipline, hard work, dedication, and honesty aren't likely to be rewarded, it certainly dampens the enthusiasm for such ideals. I have visited several formerly Communist nations... The quality of workmanship is deplorable! Why go to any extra effort, if those efforts won't make any beneficial effect in one's life? I might say the same thing seems to raise its head concerning a large number of government employees. You ask about what state had the removal of thumbs as punishment for learning to read. The plantations were in the bush. I don't agree with that as a general statement. There was a highly structured society in the Confederate States. Plantations were not isolated societies. The law was massah and vice versa. When you read the narratives of the ex-slaves your eyes are opened. In some sense, you are exactly right... The "law" was generally whatever the master said... But not in any appreciable degree than the law governing a husband/wife or parent/child, or even employer/apprentice relationship. However, I have already directed the list's attention to various laws of the state of Virginia (for instance) regarding physical abuse of slaves, including assault and rape. "Massa"
[CTRL] Using the Bible and other things. . .
-Caveat Lector- First it is not improper to "use the Bible" to support your theories, but this list is about CONSPIRACY THEORY it is not about which religion to follow. If you have a conspiratorial contribution to make and wish to use the Bible to make your point then feel free to do so, I don't think anyone will object. What is strictly not allowed is utilizing the Bible to support religious positions and attempt in that way to hit others over the head with their "error" for not believing what you say. There is no proselytizing here, period. Even religious conspiracy is okay to discuss, but never will it be tolerated where it is used to try and belittle others beliefs, BELIEFS are not to be questioned, WHY? Because they cannot be confirmed or denied, they are a matter of PERSONAL FAITH and that is not an appropriate thing to be discussed here. It always leads to more and more arguments which take up more and more space and in the end a lot of people are hurt and nothing is resolved. -Caveat Lector- Gerald Harp wrote: I see what you mean. Perhaps, and i may have been one of those, we should have used the term "evil." Same difference... In order to say that ANYTHING is "evil" or "sinful" or even "wrong," there has to be some basis for the statement... If something is said to be "wrong," I want to know what the declaration is based on... ie Do you mean its "against the law," or "unconstitutional," or "against our rules," or "not according to Hoyle," or "because my grandmother said so." Just because I don't approve of something, that doesn't make it wrong... Incidentally, if you will allow me to return to a previous response, you had some doubt that it was a common thing for massah or the overseer to force himself on the slave women. You quoted some stats on mulatto children. I live in an area that resembles a sort of Noah's Ark of mankind and one can generally tell the Africans from the African-Americans simply by how much blacker the Africans are. This doesn't prove rape, only the commonplace nature of sexual intercourse between massah and his slaves. Yep... quite easy to determine "about how much" inter-racial fornication is going on... but no evidence as to what was given in exchange ... love, trust, money, companionship, lack of fear.. Further insight is gained by considering the relationship between supervisor and worker in the sweatshops of Southeast Asia which are mostly staffed by young women/girls You don't learn a thing from that... It would be like saying, "I know what goes on in the offices of Barnes and Noble, because I have seen movies of Nazi concentration camps." You'd have to know something of the restrictions observed by the influence of the society, the church, the family, the community... There are lots of "influences" that have an impact on how people behave. As a management consultant I have clients who are jerks, and I wouldn't advise anyone to work for them... others are saps, and let their employees take undue advantage of them... [CTRL] Further corroboration of contrails
-Caveat Lector- All: Apparently, this is turning into quite the little mystery. Below are excerpts from other lists, and from direct witnesses to this phenomena. Pass it along. . . . ~~~ From PRJ: I've never seen the actual jets doing the spraying, but I HAVE noticed strange 'contrails' the past couple of years here in CT...as if they were formed a short time before... /// Yes, I've noticed the strange 'cloud' phenomenon...and wondered if THAT was the idea, that perhaps something was going on in the sky behind these clouds that someone didn't want the public on the ground to see... YnrChyldzWyld From ISO: Funny you should bring this up just now. On Thursday, January 7th, I witnessed what was to me a truely astounding display of this. I have witnessed this before several times and have thought it odd, but the display I witnessed this past Thursday really gave me a strange feeling. I was working some 40 miles south of the Kalamazoo, Michigan area. It was a bitterly cold day as I stepped outside to retrieve some tools from the truck. It was a bright sunny day with no clouds in the sky on the tail of a major snowstorm, and had been virtually cloudless when I had departed for work that morning. In any event, when I stepped outside, I was immediately aware of a sky full of contrails from horizon to horizon in every direction, crisscrossing each other in parallell lines. Some were fairly old, and just like the article stated, seemed to just keep getting bigger and bigger, there was every size in between, and a number in the making, maybe four or six. I had no idea this was some sort of phenomena that was being seen by others around the country. But I will admit, it sort of spooked me. These were all definitely contrails, in an otherwise completely cloudless blue sky. That's all I know about it. I have witnessed this before in this area, the first time about three years ago, extreme enough to seem rather odd and anomolous, but never with the density of pattern witnessed on Thursday. Anyone else see this? Yours, nadja From NUFOIA: I saw something like this Sightings last year. I may have this mixed up a bit, but I think they took samples of hail and sleet, and there were microorganisms in the samples that were pathogenic and should not have been there. I believe it was in Washington state in a very isolated town, fairly close to a military base. But other than this latest post, this was the only time I had ever heard of this until now. kmulvey "From the rage of today's downtrodden comes the revenge of tomorrow's revolutionary force." Re: [CTRL] China still considers US a nuclear threat
-Caveat Lector- Well, since China still considers us a threat then they must be REALLY happy that they bribed Clinton and Gore and others for all of the fancy gadgetry that make it easier for them to destroy us. What a wise investment on their part, don't you think? Teo1000 DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list. Proselyzting propagandic screeds are not allowed. There was no racial tension as today. Black people wanted to be with their kind and whites wanted the same. Bull. That's what you WANT to believe, to justify your racism. --Nope, its the truth. No racism on my part. I did't talk with black people for a few minutes, I lived it every day after day. You have no reason to call me a racist. You read my little history which I have absolutly no reason to lie about, reporting to you how it was in my neck of the woods and because that does'nt agree with your preconceived beliefs, you resort to calling me names? Do you honestly believe that every body who lives in the South is a racist? Try talking to the BLACKS who lived in the South at that time (as I have), and see if they were oh so content as you would like to believe... --I don't think any of us was content. We all worked from sun to sun just to plant and work the crops. --I have heard stories like this but I have never had personal knowledge of such. I never saw a person in a KKK uniform. I've seen many on tv and Jerry Springer, but that kind of trash did not exist where I was raised. There's a reason they moved up North...because the South didn't provide them the opportunities in employment the North did, because of their race... --and the north treated them with respect? The South had farms The North had Manufacturing. It may help to remember that the North, after winning the Civil war did not free their slaves as they forced the South to. And Lincoln had no intentions of freeing the slaves until he needed an issue to keep France and Spain out of the war. You remember that part don't you? We worked together Black and White to plant and clear the crops since most of the able bodied men were still at war. -- When I say We, I mean kids, old men Women and the wounded who had returned from the war. I was between 2 and 9 while I was there and I worked as a man would. I chopped cotton, planted tobacco, picked peas, chopped cane, planted rice and any thing else that needed done. I kinda resent not having a childhood and having to work like that but its too late to worry about that now. I'm sure blacks were given equal opportunity to plant clear fields -- for someone else. How many blacks OWNED this property they worked on...? --every farm we worked was owned by a black or white family. the mix was more white than black but so was the population. The Black church was only slightly smaller than the White church. Each church had an adjacent grave yard, but the Black grave yard was larger than the White one. In retrospect, it seems that the Blacks were there longer than Whites were. The "road" we lived on was a long winding clay road with farms and houses on both sides of the road. In the early forty's the community determined that for a orderly method of planting and harvesting to occur with the least amount of moving equipment would be to start on one end of the road and work to the other. With the war on they tried to conserve the use of fuel. By planting the crops in this manner, they harvested the same way since the crops would come in by the stages they were planted. It mattered not whether the farm was owned by Blacks or Whites. When it came up in the rotation, it was done. Some of the poor farmers (Black and White) had tractors and equipment that needed repair. Made no difference. Whose ever tractor worked, is whose we used. How many blacks were allowed to take over important office and factory jobs, supervisory and managerial positions, when the 'able bodied men' (black men WEREN'T 'able bodied'?) were away at war? -- This question I can't respond to since; 1. I don't know why you say black men were not able bodied; The only man I knew who was not able bodied was the man who taught me to shoot a rifle. He lost both his legs above the knee in the war. He could shoot a hog between the eyes on a run, and hardly ever missed. I called him Mr. Baby, as was his want. He took me hunting ever day. He was my friend. 2. None of the folks (including whites) who lived in Claxton were capable of supervising or managing a factory;and 3. we had nothing but farming. Anybody on that road could manage a farm, however. Every farm had senior person. This person was usually the older or more experienced farmer, and most times the head of the
