-Caveat Lector- http://www.michaelmoore.com/books-films/stupidwhitemen/onlinechapters/part01.php "The Sad and Sordid Whereabouts of bin Cheney and bin Bush" A Free Online Chapter addition to "Stupid White Men" by Michael Moore Part One: "What Does a 99-cent Bic Lighter Tell Us About the Bush War on Terrorism?" On September 22, 2001, just 11 days after the terrorist attacks in New York and Arlington, I had to fly. I had actually wanted to fly on September 11, and in fact had a ticket on the 3:00pm American Airlines flight from LAX to JFK. As we all know, that flight never made it off the ground as hours earlier four California-bound flights, two on American and two on United, were hijacked as part of a coordinated suicide mission to attack the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon outside Washington, DC. Stranded in Los Angeles, my wife and I (out there for the annual Prime Time Emmy Awards for our series, "The Awful Truth"), were awakened that morning by my wife's mother, calling us from Flint at 6:15 a.m., L.A. time. I answered the phone and heard her say that "New York was under attack, New York is at war." I remember thinking, "So what's new," but she suggested we immediately turn on the TV. I fumbled for the remote and switched on the hotel room TV. And there it was. The twin towers on fire, black smoke billowing upward. "OK," I thought, "a really bad fire." But then they ran the replay from 15 minutes earlier, of the second plane hitting the south tower. This wasn't an accident. We tried to call our daughter in New York. The phone lines weren't allowing any calls. We tried calling our friend, Joanne Doroshow, who works a few blocks from the towers. Again, the lines were jammed. A horrible panic started settling inside me. Finally, I reached Joanne's office. A woman answered, frantic. I asked if Joanne was there. "NO!" she shouted. "She's not here! We have to go! Ohmygod!" She dropped the phone and I heard a loud roar, like a train. My wife said, "Look at the TV." I did, and I saw from L.A. what I was listening to over the phone: the collapse of the south tower. It would be another four hours before we were able to reach our daughter, and seven hours before Joanne calls us, safe inside her apartment (she had ducked into a building just in time as the cloud of debris rained its way down the street). That night, as we watched the images repeated on the TV, a ticker began running the names of some of the dead who had been on the planes. Along the bottom of the screen came the name, "William Weems." A friend of ours the next morning confirmed that this was, in fact, the same Bill Weems, a line producer from Boston with whom we had recently filmed a batch of humorous TV spots targeting the tobacco companies. Bill was on the Boston-to-L.A. plane. He died as the jet, traveling at 586 miles per hour, slammed into the south tower. He left behind a wife and 7-year old daughter. It was all so unbelievably horrific. The airports were closed and all planes were now grounded. I found a Hertz dealer who would rent me a mini-van for $1,700 -- and 43 hours later we pulled out of our hotel on the Pacific Ocean and began our 2,990-mile journey home to our apartment in New York City. Somewhere around Oklahoma City, the airports were all open again, but my wife did not want to ditch the mini-van and get on a plane. So we continued on home for the next few days, the first ever trip each of us had made driving coast to coast. It was, as it turned out, well worth it, as it gave us a chance to gauge the reaction of average citizens, especially as we passed through Bush and Ashcroft country (The internet letters I wrote - and read - from the road can be found on my website). By September 22, I had no choice but to get back on a plane. I had been scheduled to give a talk in San Antonio, and so off I went on an American flight out of Newark. At the airport there was a newly, hastily put-together list of all the items that I could NOT bring aboard the plane. The list was long and bizarre. The list of banned items included: No guns. (Obviously) No knives. (Ditto) No boxcutters. (Certainly now justified) No toenail clippers. (What?) No knitting needles. (Huh?) No crotchet hooks. (Now, wait a minute!) No sewing needles. No mace. No leaf blowers. (OK, now it's personal) No corkscrews. No letter openers. No dry ice. The list went on and on. A lot of the items made good sense. I wasn't quite sure if terrorists also made quilts in their spare time, and I guess I must have missed the terrorist incident where some poor bastards smuggled dry ice aboard a plane (were they trying to keep their Popsicles cold until they ate them and then used the sticks for their attack?). Frankly, I was a little freaked-out about flying so soon after 9-11 and I guess there was just no way I was going to fly without a weapon for my protection. So I took the New York Yankees-signed baseball that Mayor Giuliani had given me on "TV N

-Caveat Lector- POLICE VIOLENCE BEING PLANNED http://indymedia.org:8081/front.php3?article_id=187499&group=webcast Violence and police state tactics are being planned against anti-capitalist and anti-global protesters by authorities in at least three nations this summer. In preparation for G8 meetings in Kananaskis, Canada next week, Canadians are witnessing unprecedented security measures. Starting Sunday, June 23, downtown Calgary will be locked up tight, during the day as well as after dark. Calgary police will patrol the streets, while the military patrol Kananaskis. RCMP will escort Internationally Protected Persons (mainly heads of state) wherever they go, including to a $300,000 Gala reception and dinner downtown, next Tuesday. "Thereâ?Ts a clear agenda to portray activists as dangerous, disorganized, violent, irrational people and itâ?Ts created this frenzy that is not based on reality," said activist Sarah Kerr. "The police have been traveling around the city providing â?Tinformationâ?T telling people what to be afraid of." The campaign launched by the government and security forces includes unsigned warnings such as this one which appeared in the June issue of the Hillhurst-Sunnyside community newsletter (probably a police press release) which reads like something out of Reefer Madness: "Young people and their parents should know that what may seem like a harmless invitation to express freedom of speech in a spirit of cooperation and solidarity with like-minded individuals has the potential to escalate into violence, creating a situation in which the vast majority of participants had no intention of becoming involved." "Itâ?Ts an incredible campaign of fearmongering," said Kerr, "and itâ?Ts designed to scare people out of listening to what it is we have to say." Norway will deploy up to 1,000 extra police to impose draconian security in Oslo next week during a World Bank anti-poverty conference. Protesters insist they will be peaceful but police have trained to face rioters throwing petrol bombs. Demonstrators accuse police of trying to demonize them, saying the Oslo 2002 umbrella group of 56 organizations opposed to World Bank policies and globalisation is planning peaceful marches. "We almost get the impression that the police are preparing for a war," Oslo 2002 said in a statement. The meeting is an Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) for Europe entitled "Towards pro-Poor Policies" at which speakers will include World Bank chief James Wolfensohn and Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik. The last ABCDE meeting a year ago was held over the Internet for fear of protests in Barcelona, the planned host. In South Africa police vow to "get tough" with protesters planning to target the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in August. The meeting is a follow-up to the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Sean Tshabalala, director of VIP protection for the South African police said "Spontaneous activities are just not acceptable. A group of people gathering spontaneously will be picked up and locked up." Tshabalala said, "We are prepared for everything" He mentioned airborne, sniper or mortar attacks, kidnappings, lunatic attacks or biological attacks like with anthrax as the "everything" for which the police were prepared. Of course, nothing like these things have ever happened at any of the protests at anti-capitalist globalization meetings around the world. He said "thousands" of security agents would be deployed in Johannesburg for the event, but did not give an exact number. [CTRL] Fw: CIA, Profiteering, Merrill Lynch, and Fraud
-Caveat Lector- Stratify has given up one of the software industry's greatest company names--Purple Yogi--but a less-colorful moniker isn't hurting its ability to attract capital. It recently landed a fresh investment of $1 million to $5 million from In-Q-Tel, a venture fund backed by the CIA (see CIA connection below for why it isn't being more specific). The company's Stratify Discovery System classifies and manages unstructured data such as documents and E-mail, which are estimated to account for 85% of all data in the average company. Merrill Lynch projects that the market for unstructured-data management products will reach $4.6 billion within two years. The company has raised more than $35 million in private equity since it was founded in 1999; investors include Intel Capital and Mobius Venture Capital. Stratify CEO Nimish Mehta says one of the company's clients is the CIA, which is using Stratify's software as the foundation for "an information-management platform to accelerate data acquisition and effectiveness." http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20020118S0088 -- Sept. 11 marked a devastating loss for the nation, but shrewd financial speculators with ties to the highest levels of the CIA appear to have profited from the disaster, raising questions about exactly who had prior knowledge of the terrible tragedy. [...] A $2.5 million winning that resulted when the United Airlines share price fell after two of its planes crashed remains unclaimed more than six weeks after the tragedy. Investigations into the unusually high number of "put" options, betting that the price of United Airlines (UAL) and American Airlines shares would fall, have revealed that Alex Brown Inc., an investment banking firm, purchased many of these option contracts. Alex Brown Inc. was, until 1998, managed by the man who is now the executive director of the Central Intelligence Agency, A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard. Krongard, 64, former head of Baltimore-based Alex Brown, America's oldest investment bank, joined the CIA three years ago as a counselor to Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet. Krongard switched careers shortly after helping engineer the $2.5 billion merger of Alex Brown and Bankers Trust New York Corp., gaining $71 million in Bankers Trust stock in the process. President Bush appointed Krongard executive director of the Central Intelligence Agency on March 26. From February 1998 until March 2001, Krongard served as counselor to the director of central intelligence. Until 1997 Krongard was chairman of the investment bank A.B. Brown, having previously worked in various capacities at Alex Brown. Krongard was quoted on the relationship between Wall Street and the CIA in an article by The Washington Post. If you go back to the CIA's origins during World War II in the Office of Strategic Services, Krongard told the Post, "the whole OSS was really nothing but Wall Street bankers and lawyers." OPTIONS SPIKES Between Sept. 6 and 7, the CBOE saw a dramatic spike in the purchases of put options on United Airlines stock compared to call options. A "put" option increases in value when the stock price falls, while a "call" option increases if the share price rises. The ratio of "put" options to "call" options was 12 to 1, with 2,372 "put" options purchased, betting that UAL stock would fall compared with 198 "call" options. The winners on these options deals walked away with untold millions of dollars in profits. On Sept. 10, speculators in Chicago purchased put options on American Airlines, the other airlines involved in the hijackings, at a ratio of 6 to 1 against "call" options. Traders bought 2,258 put options as compared with 374 "call" options the day before the crashes. There were similar spikes in "put" option contracts on the shares of the investment firms of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. and Merrill Lynch & Co., major tenants of the World Trade Center, occupying 22 floors each, who were both devastated by the terror attacks. In the three days of trading prior to Sept. 11, Morgan Stanley "put" options spiked dramatically. According to figures provided by Options Clearing Corp. of Chicago, during the two trading days before the attacks the total number of "put" options jumped to 7,647 compared with a daily average of 2,384 during the month of August. Morgan Stanley's shares fell from $48.90 to $42.50 in the aftermath of the attacks. Likewise, Merrill Lynch "put" options jumped to 64,445 in the three days before the attacks. On Sept. 10, 28,960 "put" options were purchased on Merrill Lynch compared with a daily average of 5,430 during the month of August. Merrill's shares fell from $46.88 to $41.50. Lewis DO, Yeager CA, Swica Y, Pincus JH, Lewis M Am J Psychiatry 1997 Dec; 154(12):1703-10 OBJECTIVE: The skepticism regarding the existence of dissociative identity disorder as well as the abuse that engenders it persists for lack of objective documentation. This is doubly so for the disorder in murderers because of issues of suspected malingering. This article presents objective verification of both dissociative symptoms and severe abuse during childhood in a series of adult murderers with dissociative identity disorder. METHOD: This study consisted of a review of the clinical records of 11 men and one woman with DSM-IV-defined dissociative identity disorder who had committed murder. Data were gathered from medical, psychiatric, social service, school, military, and prison records and from records of interviews with subjects' family members and others. Handwriting samples were also examined. Data were analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS: Signs and symptoms of dissociative identity disorder in childhood and adulthood were corroborated independently and from several sources in all 12 cases; objective evidence of severe abuse was obtained in 11 cases. The subjects had amnesia for most of the abuse and underreported it. Marked changes in writing style and/or signatures were documented in 10 cases. CONCLUSIONS: This study establishes, once and for all, the linkage between early severe abuse and dissociative identity disorder. Further, the data demonstrate that the disorder can be distinguished from malingering and from other disorders. The study shows that it is possible, with great effort, to obtain objective evidence of both the symptoms of dissociative identity disorder and the abuse that engenders it. http://www.ctrl.org/";>www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list. The legislation now before Congress contains a provision allowing the director of the proposed agency to waive all employee protections in Title V, including the Whistleblower Protection Act. The act protects government employees from retaliation or losing employment for speaking out on waste, fraud and abuse. FBI Agent Coleen Rowley blew the whistle on her agency for mishandling a probe of terrorist suspect Zacarias Moussaoui, who has been indicted by a federal grand jury on six counts of conspiracy in the September 11 attacks. Mrs. Rowley testified before a Senate panel earlier this month that a "climate of fear" prevented an aggressive investigation of the man whom authorities believe was to be the 20th hijacker. As the 21-year veteran testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, President Bush proposed the new Cabinet position in a prime-time televised address. The protection exclusion has concerned members of Congress and civil-liberties activists. "I don't think we want to just let a provision like that sail through without taking a close look at it," says Rep. Bob Barr, Georgia Republican. "If you look back at recent history, it has been a very, very important aspect of ferreting out the truth regarding government actions. Much of what we know that went wrong in the White House in the '90s was initially highlighted by special agent Aldrich." The reference is to Gary Aldrich, who wrote "Unlimited Access: An FBI Agent Inside the Clinton White House." Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican, sent a letter Wednesday to Tom Ridge, White House homeland security adviser, asking that the administration guarantee full application of the act to employees of the proposed department. "Whistleblowers are key to exposing a dysfunctional bureaucracy," Mr. Grassley says. Since the September 11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, government agencies have placed a greater emphasis on secrecy and restricted information for security reasons, he says. "With these restrictions come a greater danger of stopping the legitimate disclosure of wrongdoing and mismanagement, especially about public safety and security. Bureaucracies have an instinct to cover up their misdeeds and mistakes, and that temptation is even greater when they can use a potential security issue as an excuse." The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service last month was required to pay back wages and cancel suspension and demotion orders for two Border Patrol agents who told a newspaper about security problems along the U.S.-Canadian border. The agents, assigned to the INS field office in Detroit, were recommended for discipline after they told the Detroit Free Press that Michigan's border lacked the resources to adequately protect the country from terrorists. Agents Mark Hall and Robert Lindemann said the 804 miles of shoreline border were guarded by 28 field agents, one working boat, several damaged electronic sensors and one broken remote camera. They were cited for not following instructions not to talk to reporters and recommended for 90-day suspensions and one-year demotions. The exclusion of the whistleb

The class-action suit names ten defendants, among whom are George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld and Norman Mineta. Hilton's suit charges Bush and his administration with allowing the September 11th attacks to take place so as to reap political benefits from the catastrophe. Hilton alleges that Osama bin Laden is being used as a scapegoat by an administration that ignored pressing warnings of the attack and refused to round up suspected terrorists beforehand. Hilton alleges the ultimate motivation behind these acts was achieved when the Taliban were replaced by American military forces with a regime friendly to America and its oil interests in the region. Hilton's plaintiffs in this case are the families of 14 victims of 9/11, numbering 400 people nationwide. These are the same families that rallied in Washington recently to advocate for an independent investigation into the attacks. The current 9/11 hearings are being conducted by Congress behind closed doors, a situation these families find unacceptable. -Caveat Lector- http://www.motherjones.com/web_exclusives/commentary/opinion/gi tlin_june.html The Rough Beast Returns Anti-Semitism is back, taking the place of intelligent criticism of Israel and its policies. And if that wasn't bad enough, students are spreading the gibberish. June 17, 2002 The email sent out last month by Laurie Zoloth, director of Jewish Studies at San Francisco State University, was chilling on its face. "I cannot fully express what it feels like to have to walk across campus daily, past maps of the Middle East that do not include Israel, past posters of cans of soup with labels on them of drops of blood and dead babies, labeled 'canned Palestinian children meat, slaughtered according to Jewish rites under American license,' past poster after poster calling out Zionism=racism, and Jews=Nazis," she wrote -- and the details only became more shattering from then on. I read Zoloth's words with horror but not, alas, complete amazement, Eleven years ago, during the Gulf War, across San Francisco Bay, the head of a student splinter group at Berkeley addressed a room full of faculty and students opposed to the war, spitting out venomously, "You Jews, I know your names, I know where you live." The faculty and students in attendance sat stiffly and said nothing. Embarrassed? Frightened? Or worse -- thinking that it wasn't time to tackle this issue, that it was off the agenda, an inconvenience. Far more recently, two students of mine at NYU wondered aloud whether it was actually true, as they had heard, that 4,000 Jews didn't show up for work at the World Trade Center on September 11. They clearly thought this astoundingly crazy charge was plausible enough to warrant careful investigation, but it didn't occur to them to look at the names of the dead. Wicked anti-Semitism is back. The worst crackpot notions that circulate through the violent Middle East are also roaming around America, and if that wasn't bad enough, students are spreading the gibberish. Students! As if the bloc to which we have long looked for intelligent dissent has decided to junk any pretense of standards. A student movement is not just a student movement. It's a student movement. Students, whether they are progressive or not, have the responsibility of knowing things, of thinking and discerning, of studying. A student movement should maintain the highest of standards, not ape the formulas of its elders or outdo them in virulence. It should therefore trouble progressives everywhere that the students at San Francisco State are neither curious nor revolted by the anti-Semitic drivel they are regurgitating. The simple fact that a student movement -- even a small one -- has been reduced to reflecting the hatred spewed by others should profoundly trouble anyone whose moral principles aim higher than simple nationalism - - as should be the case for anyone on the left. It isn't hard to discover the sources of the drivel being parroted by the students at San Francisco State. In the blood-soaked Middle East of Yasser Arafat and Ariel Sharon, in the increasingly polarized Europe of Jean-Marie le Pen raw anti-Semitism has increasingly taken the place of intelligent criticism of Israel and its policies. Even as Laurie Zoloth's message flew around the world, even as several prominent European papers published scathing but warranted attacks on Israel's stonewalling of an inquiry into the Jenin fighting, the great Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago was describing Israel's invasion of Ramallah as "a crime comparable to Auschwitz." In one of his long, lapping sentences, Saramago wrote in Madrid's El Pais (as translated by Paul Berman in The Forward, May 24): "Intoxicated mentally by the messianic dream of a Greater Israel which will finally achieve the expansionist dreams of the most radical Zionism; contaminated by the monstrous and rooted 'certitude' that in this catastrophic and absurd world there exists a people chosen by God and that, consequently, all the actions of an obsessive, psychological and pathologically exclusivist racism are justified; educated and trained in the idea that any suffering that has been inflicted, or is being inflicted, or will be inflicted on everyone else, especially the Palestinians, will always be inferior to that which they themselves suffered in the Holocaust, the Jews endlessly scratch their own wound to keep it bleeding, to make it incurable, and they show it to the world as if it were a banner." Note well: the deliciously deferred subject of this sentence is: "the Jews." Not the right-wing Jews, the militarist Israelis, but "the Jews." Suddenly the Jews are reduced to a single stick-figure (or shall we say hook-nosed?) caricature and we are plunged into the brainless, ruinous, abysmal iconography that should make every last reasonable person shudder. The German socialist August Bebel once said that anti-Semitism was "the socialism of fools." What we witness now is the progre

-Caveat Lector- Gas Pains The saga of natural gas is perhaps the 20th century's best illustration of how government solves problems. In the '50s natural gas was plentiful and cheap. Oil well operators commonly flared gas to get rid of it. Enter the federal government. It imposed price controls to protect consumers. It must have worked. Prices remained low and the supply plentiful. Owners of gas fields continued to sell for whatever was allowed. By the mid '60s it was all but impossible to drill profitable gas wells while selling at the controlled price. Drilling stopped. http://www.admccallum.com/97COL/C-27GAS.HTM http://www.ctrl.org/";>www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list. Members must respond to commands and do as they are told, otherwise they are dangerous to the organizational control. This is normally accomplished as a three-step Decognition Process. Alertness reduction "Step One is alertness reduction: The controllers cause the nervous system to malfunction, making it difficult to distinguish between fantasy and reality. This can be accomplished in several ways. poor diet is one; watch out for Brownies and Koolaid. The sugar throws the nervous system off (**The use of sugar as a drug of mass control in our modern day diets. Aspartame, the most popular `non-nutrive sweetener was experimented with as a mass mind control drug by the Nazis in WWII). More subtle is the "spiritual diet" used by many cults. They eat only vegetables and fruits; without the grounding of grains, nuts, seeds, dairy products, fish or meat, an individual becomes mentally "spacey." Inadequate sleep is another primary way to reduce alertness, especially when combined with long hours of work or intense physical activity. Also, being bombarded with intense and unique experiences achieves the same result. Programmed Confusion "Step Two is programmed confusion: You are mentally assaulted while your alertness is being reduced as in Step One. This is accomplished with a deluge of new information, lectures, discussion groups, encounters or one-to-one processing, which usually amounts to the controller bombarding the individual with questions. During this phase of decognition, reality and illusion often merge and perverted logic is likely to be accepted. Thought Stopping "Step Three is thought stopping: Techniques are used to cause the mind to go "flat." These are altered-state-of-consciousness techniques that initially induce calmness by giving the mind something simple to deal with and focusing awareness. The continued use brings on a feeling of elation and eventually hallucination. The result is the reduction of thought and eventually, if used long enough, the cessation of all thought and withdrawal from everyone and everything except that which the controllers direct. The takeover is then complete. It is important to be aware that when members or participants are instructed to use "thought-stopping" techniques, they are told that they will benefit by so doing: they will become "better soldiers" or "find enlightenment." Thought-Stopping Techniques Marching "There are three primary techniques used for thought stopping. The first is marching: the thump, thump, thump beat literally generates self-hypnosis and thus great susceptibility to suggestion. Meditation "The second thought stopping technique is meditation. If you spend an hour to an hour and a half a day in meditation, after a few weeks, there is a great probability that you will not return to full beta consciousness. You will remain in a fixed state of alpha for as long as you continue to meditate. I'm not saying this is bad--if you do it yourself. It may be very beneficial. But it is a fact that you are causing your mind to go flat. I've worked with meditators on an EEG machine and the results are conclusive: the more you meditate, the flatter your mind becomes until, eventually and especially if used to excess or in combination with

We are all conditioned that if someone gives us something, we have to give them something in return--in that case, it was money. While watching this hustler, I was close enough to notice that many of the people he stopped exhibited an outward sign of alpha--their eyes were actually dilated. Subliminal Programming "Subliminals are hidden suggestions that only your subconscious perceives. They can be audio, hidden behind music, or visual, airbrushed into a picture, flashed on a screen so fast that you don't consciously see them, or cleverly incorporated into a picture or design. (**While the advertising professors I know will say this subliminal programming used ina dvertising doesn't work, it is now the basis of all advertising and marketing techniques. It's modern day instigators knew it worked so well that they actually stopped using it, afraid of how it could be used against mankind's weak willed mind.) "Most audio subliminal reprogramming tapes offer verbal suggestions recorded at a low volume. I question the efficacy of this technique--if subliminals are not perceptible, they cannot be effective, and subliminals recorded below the audible threshold are therefore useless. The oldest audio subliminal technique uses a voice that follows the volume of the music so subliminals are impossible to detect without a parametric equalizer. But this technique is patented and, when I wanted to develop my own line of subliminal audiocassettes, negotiations with the patent holder proved to be unsatisfactory. "My attorney obtained copies of the patents which I gave to some talented Hollywood sound engineers, asking them to create a new technique. They found a way to psycho-acoustically modify and synthesize the suggestions so that they are projected in the same chord and frequency as the music, thus giving them the effect of being part of the music. But we found that in using this technique, there is no way to reduce various frequencies to detect the subliminals. In other words, although the suggestions are being heard by the subconscious mind, they cannot be monitored with even the most sophisticated equipment. "If we were able to come up with this technique as easily as we did, I can only imagine how sophisticated the technology has become, with unlimited government or advertising funding. And I shudder to think about the propaganda and commercial manipulation that we are exposed to on a daily basis. There is simply no way to know what is behind the music you hear. It may even be possible to hide a second voice behind the voice to which you are listening. "The big question about subliminals is: do they work? And I guarantee you they do. Not only from the response of those who have used my tapes, but from the results of such programs as the subliminals behind the music in department stores. Supposedly, the only message is instructions to not steal: one East Coast department store chain reported a 37 percent reduction in thefts in the first nine months of testing. "A 1984 article in the technical newsletter, "Brain-Mind Bulletin," states that as much as 99 percent of our cogn

U.S. savings...the World Cup...and more! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A couple of things happened yesterday; Mr. Market didn't seem to like either one. First, the figures from April showed that the U.S. trade gap has reached a new record - $35.9 billion in a single month. Gradually, smart investors are becoming aware that the U.S. stock market - and its economy - depend upon foreign investors. If they ever stop buying our stocks, bonds and dead presidents - the whole republic is in big trouble. And, as Eric reports below, the kindness of these strangers is wearing a little thin. They're beginning to think that they've got all the dead presidents they need. So, they're trading the green Jeffersons, Jacksons, and Washingtons for funny-looking paper with pictures of Europe, cathedrals and other unfamiliar images. Economists and investors now expect the dollar to fall. What might still surprise them, though, is how much and how fast. Not that we know anything...but Mr. Market likes surprises, especially those that come at investors' expense. Yesterday, the greenback hit a 2- year low against the euro. The most effective marketing worms its way into our consciousness, leaving intact the perception that we have reached our opinions and made our choices independently. As old as humankind itself, over the past few years this approach has been refined, with the help of the internet, into a technique called "viral marketing". Last month, the viruses appear to have murdered their host. One of the world's foremost scientific journals was persuaded to do something it had never done before, and retract a paper it had published. While, in the past, companies have created fake citizens' groups to campaign in favour of trashing forests or polluting rivers, now they create fake citizens. Messages purporting to come from disinterested punters are planted on listservers at critical moments, disseminating misleading information in the hope of recruiting real people to the cause. Detective work by the campaigner Jonathan Matthews and the freelance journalist Andy Rowell shows how a PR firm contracted to the biotech company Monsanto appears to have played a crucial but invisible role in shaping scientific discourse. Monsanto knows better than any other corporation the costs of visibility. Its clumsy attempts, in 1997, to persuade people that they wanted to eat GM food all but destroyed the market for its crops. Determined never to make that mistake again, it has engaged the services of a firm which knows how to persuade without being seen to persuade. The Bivings Group specialises in internet lobbying. An article on its website, entitled Viral Marketing: How to Infect the World, warns that "there are some campaigns where it would be undesirable or even disastrous to let the audience know that your organisation is directly involved... it simply is not an intelligent PR move. In cases such as this, it is important to first 'listen' to what is being said online... Once you are plugged into this world, it is possible to make postings to these outlets that present your position as an uninvolved third party... Perhaps the greatest advantage of viral marketing is that your message is placed into a context where it is more likely to be considered seriously." A senior executive from Monsanto is quoted on the Bivings site thanking the PR firm for its "outstanding work". On November 29 last year, two researchers at the University of California, Berkeley published a paper in Nature magazine, which claimed that native maize in Mexico had been contaminated, across vast distances, by GM pollen. The paper was a disaster for the biotech companies seeking to persuade Mexico, Brazil and the European Union to lift their embargos on GM crops. Even before publication, the researchers knew their work was hazardous. One of them, Ignacio Chapela, was approached by the director of a Mexican corporation, who first offered him a glittering research post if he withheld his paper, then told him that he knew where to find his children. In the US, Chapela's opponents have chosen a different form of assassination. On the day the paper was published, messages started to appear on a biotechnology listserver used by more than 3,000 scientists, called AgBioWorld. The first came from a correspondent named "Mary Murphy". Chapela is on the board of directors of the Pesticide Action Network, and therefore, she claimed, "not exactly what you'd call an unbiased writer". Her posting was followed by a message from an "An

His warning came as Israel intensified its military offensive against Palestinian-ruled areas, following attacks this week that have killed more than 30 Israelis. The first, yesterday's Reuters news wire report of Dick Cheney's call for the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. The second is an account his business dealings with the Iraqi government. Cheney originally denied that Halliburton under his tenure as CEO had in fact circumvented US law to do business with Hussein's Iraqi government. He was later forced to retract his denials when presented with evidence of Halliburton's dealings.) Cheney Sees 'Gathering Danger' in Iraq http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/news/news-iraq-usa-cheney.html By Reuters | New York Times Thursday, 20 June, 2002 DETROIT (Reuters) - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein represents a "gathering danger'' to the United States, Vice President Dick Cheney said on Thursday, while warning that Washington will act preemptively against threats of terrorism. "We are greatly concerned about any possible linkup between terrorists and regimes that have or seek weapons of mass destruction,'' said Cheney. "In the case of Saddam Hussein, we've got a dictator who is clearly pursuing and already possesses some of these weapons,'' he said. "A regime that hates America and everything we stand for must never be permitted to threaten America with weapons of mass destruction,'' the vice president added, referring to Saddam and the Iraqi forces he fought as defense minister under President Bush's father during the Gulf War in 1991. Cheney, who spoke at a political fund-raiser here, stopped short of saying there were any established ties between Baghdad and the al Qaeda network, or the Sept. 11 attacks that took about 3,000 U.S. lives. But he said the possibility of such links was too great to ignore, especially in light of Saddam's defiance of U.N. weapons inspection programs and international oversight. "This gathering danger requires the most urgent, deliberate and decisive response,'' he said. "It is very clear that our enemies are determined to do further significant damage to the American people,'' Cheney said, citing recent intelligence reports. "Wars are not won on the defensive,'' he added. "We must take the battle to the enemy anywhere necessary, to preempt greater stress to our country,'' he said. === Cheney Made Millions Off Oil Deals with Hussein by Martin A. Lee San Francisco Bay Guardian November 13, 2000 Here's a whopper of a story you may have missed amid the cacophony of campaign ads and stump speeches in the run- up to the elections. During former defense secretary Richard Cheney's five-year tenure as chief executive of Halliburton, Inc., his oil services firm raked in big bucks from dubious commercial dealings with Iraq. Cheney left Halliburton with a $34 million retirement package last July when he became the GOP's vice-presidential candidate. Of course, U.S. firms aren't generally supposed to do business with Saddam Hussein. But thanks to legal loopholes large enough to steer an oil tanker through, Halliburton profited big-time from deals with the Iraqi dictatorship. Conducted discreetly through several Halliburton subsidiaries in Europe, these greasy transactions helped Saddam Hussein retain his grip on power while lining the pockets of Cheney and company. According to the Financial Times of London, between September 1998 and last winter, Cheney, as CEO of Halliburton, oversaw $23.8 million of business contracts for the sale of oil-industry equipment and services to Iraq through two of its subsidiaries, Dresser Rand and Ingersoll-Dresser Pump, which helped rebuild Iraq's war-damaged petroleum-production infrastructure. The combined value of these contracts exceeded those of any other U.S. company doing business with Baghdad. Halliburton was among more than a dozen American firms that supplied Iraq's petroleum industry with spare parts and retooled its oil rigs when U.N. sanctions were eased in 1998. Cheney's company utilized subsidiaries in France, Italy, Germany, and Austria so as not to draw undue attention to controversial business arrangements that might embarrass Washington and jeopardize lucrative ties to Iraq, which will pump $24 billion of petrol under the U.N.-administered oil-for-food program this year. Assisted by Halliburton, Hussein's government will earn another $1 billion by illegally exporting oil through black-market channels. With Cheney at the helm since 1995, Halliburton quickly grew into America's number-one oil-services company, the fifth-largest military contractor, and the biggest nonunion employer in the nation. Although Cheney claimed that the U.S. government "had absolutely nothing to do" with his firm's meteoric financial success, State Department documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times indicate that U.S. officials helped Halliburton secure major contracts in Asia and Africa. -Caveat Lector- http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20020620/ap_on_re_eu/attacks_germany_1 Accused Businessman Blasts Bush Thu Jun 20, 6:55 PM ET By TONY CZUCZKA, Associated Press Writer BERLIN (AP) - A Syrian-born businessman who knew Sept. 11 ringleader Mohamed Atta and has been accused of operating an al-Qaida front lashed out at President Bush on Thursday and denied any connection to terrorism. Mamoun Darkazanli, described by the FBI as a well-connected agent of Osama bin Laden, was questioned by German police shortly after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But he was freed for lack of evidence and continues to live in Hamburg, Germany, where Atta and two other hijackers had lived. Speaking to The Associated Press in a telephone interview, Darkazanli bristled when asked about connections to a number of al-Qaida suspects and accused Bush of making unproven allegations. "I personally don't think they are terrorists. There must be an international court for these people to be proven guilty," Darkazanli said. "Bush is not the judge of all of humanity." Darkazanli, one of the first people to appear on U.S. suspect lists, has denied any links to bin Laden or the Sept. 11 attacks. The U.S. Treasury Department ordered a freeze of his personal assets and those held by his import-export company. German officials followed suit and placed him under formal investigation but say they do not have enough evidence to detain him. "The German authorities hold nothing against me, and no one else holds anything against me," Darkazanli said. "The law in Germany works well." Darkazanli has said previously that he attended the wedding of Said Bihaji, one of the three men sought by German authorities for alleged links to the Hamburg cell involved in Sept. 11. Also at the wedding was Atta, believed to have been the ringleader of the attacks, and Ziad Jarrah, who was aboard United Airlines flight 93 which crashed in rural Pennsylvania. Darkazanli refused to discuss his relationship with Atta on Thursday. Spanish authorities have alleged that Darkazanli knew Imad Yarkas, the suspected leader of a cell which recruited for al-Qaida. The Syrian-born Yarkas was arrested in Spain in November and became the first person charged overseas in connection with Sept. 11. Darkazanli first caught the attention of German investigators in 1998 when they learned he had power of attorney over a German bank account opened by bin Laden's suspected financial chief, Mamdouh Mahmud Salim. But Darkazanli said the account access was for a business deal that fell through and that he never heard from Salim again. Darkazanli is not the only Syrian-born suspect connected to the Sept. 11 investigation whom German officials are interested in finding. A government official in Berlin said Thursday that Germany has asked the United States to help explain how Mohammed Haydar Zammar, who reportedly recruited Atta while they both lived in Hamburg, ended up in custody in his native Syria. German investigators say they questioned Zammar immediately after the Sept. 11 attacks but let him go for lack of evidence. He then left Germany and was arrested in Morocco under unclear circumstances. A German intelligence official said this week that the Moroccans later sent him to Syria, where he remains in custody. The German Foreign Ministry said Thursday that it had asked Syria about the case and was told that no German was in custody there. U.S. authorities reportedly knew about the arrest but didn't tell Germany. "We have taken up the case with the Americans and asked for an explanation in the case," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Zammar was in Hamburg with Atta and other members of Atta's cell, including Jarrah and hijacker Marwan al-Shehhi. ___ EDITORS: Associated Press Writer Sarah el Deeb in Cairo contributed to this report. http://www.ctrl.org/";>www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list. -Caveat Lector- >From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14474-2002Jun19.html }}}>Begin washingtonpost.com Dirty-Bomb Politics By Mary McGrory Thursday, June 20, 2002; Page A23 If the mugging of Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia is a fair indicator of what is to come, the fall elections will be ugly. Cleland, a decorated veteran and triple amputee, was attacked by his Republican opponent, Rep. Saxby Chambliss, "for breaking his oath to protect and defend the Constitution." Shades of Lee Atwater, the fabled Republican cutthroat politico who helped pilot the first President Bush to victory. But even Atwater might have hesitated before going after a man who lost both legs and an arm in the service of his country. Chambliss did not participate in Vietnam. He had a bad knee, he told columnist Mark Shields, who was the first to call national attention to Cleland's bizarre situation -- veterans whose war wounds confine them to wheelchairs are often given a pass on patriotism, especially by those who never wore the uniform. But Chambliss was not deterred. On May 16 he issued a press release about Cleland's insufficient contribution to the defense of his country: Cleland had voted for an amendment to the Chemical Weapons Treaty that eliminated a ban on citizens of terrorist nations being on U.N. inspection teams in Iraq. It was a majority vote, 56 to 44, and among those in support were Sen. Bill Frist, the stately chairman of the Senate Republican campaign committee who handpicked candidate Chambliss. While the 55 other senators seem equally reprehensible and guilty of oath-breaking, Chambliss says through his campaign communications director, Michelle Hitt, that the majority was not "overwhelming," and that, although the aye-sayers merited the lash, Chambliss was letting them walk because "he is concerned only about how Sen. Cleland voted, which was contrary to the way Georgians would have voted." Hitt says there has been little adverse criticism of Chambliss's dirty-bomb attack. Only the "Mark Shieldses of this world complain," she says. Conservative columnist Jim Wooten of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote that Chambliss had a right to reveal Cleland's voting record -- though it was never a secret. Chambliss may have been under the influence of Bush's top adviser, Karl Rove, a disciple of Lee Atwater, who has said from the first that the war on terrorism is a good issue for his party and can help close gaps such as Chambliss's 22-point deficit. Throughout the country, patriotism, under Rove's coaching, has become the sub- theme of the campaign. The message is sometimes coded, sometimes not. It is not the first time a campaign has turned into a brawl over custody of the flag: Remember the senior Bush's melodramatic 1988 trip to a flag factory? In Iowa, Democrat Tom Harkin is getting clubbed by opponent Greg Ganske, who went at him on the flag-burning amendment. Harkin's record as a Navy pilot during Vietnam was no help to him in Ganske's attack on him for voting against the amendment. Ganske, although he is running as "a compassionate doctor," made a tacky jest about Harkin's recent operation for a cancer on his lip. Ganske promised that when he defeats Harkin, he will make sure Harkin has a lot of sunscreen "down there," presumably referring to Harkin's house in the Bahamas. The chairs of the Democratic House and Senate campaign committees, Rep. Nita Lowey and Sen. Patty Murray, say their issues -- prescription drugs, patients' bill of rights, schools and jobs -- will prevail in November. Both have found on recent tours that Democrats are talking more about Social Security than about homeland security. They advise candidates to do what they are already doing: getting close to Bush on the war on terror and protecting the country. House Democratic leader Richard Gephardt is going the distance. He has endorsed the invasion of Iraq and is pushing for passage of a homeland security bill by 9/11. Bush himself would be satisfied with the first of the year. Questioning the president on anything -- on early knowledge of the attacks, exclusion of the FBI and CIA from the homeland security complex -- is considered risky business for Democrats. Said Sen. Bob Graham of Florida on "Face the Nation": "If the administration takes a stonewall position, and every word in their plan is biblical, and if you change it, you are unpatriotic." Both Murray and Lowey say that an emerging issue that might work for them is increasing consternation about corporate greed. L. Dennis Kozlowski, who made a killing while running his company into the ground, makes people mad. They are interested in the safekeeping of their retirement funds. It's too soon to say whether Rove will succeed in making the November vote into a referendum on the wartime leadership of George W. Bush. But the meanness has begun early and can only be expected to get worse. Max Cleland -- and it's not his style -- has begun to quote Shakespeare

On a personal appearance with Queen Rania of Jordon, Mrs Blair told reporters: "As long as young people feel they have got no hope but to blow themselves up you are never going to make progress." Her off-the-cuff response during a visit to a Palestinian medical charity in north London - part of an appeal to buy medicine - might have gone largely unremarked had it not coincided with yesterday's suicide bombing in Jerusalem. Tony Blair condemned the latest attack, saying: "Terrorism offers absolutely no future, no way out of that process whatsoever." But he also echoed his wife's stress on the need for hope and added that "no one [should] misdescribe her sentiments, or mine or anyone else's". It was not enough to prevent a sharp attack from the shadow foreign secretary, Michael Ancram, and a renewed mood of outrage among newspapers eager to maintain the momentum of the past week's attacks over the Queen Mother's lying in state. Mr Ancram predicted that "these most unfortunate words by the prime minister's wife...will cause massive offence" to the victims' families - a point taken up by the Israeli embassy, which expressed "regret that any public statements which might be interpreted as expressing understanding for Palestinian terrorism should be made". Labour MPs who believe the Blairs are facing increasingly vicious media criticism expressed alarm. Leftwinger Bob Marshall-Andrews told Channel 4: "You can hate the sin (of terrorism), but still try to understand it." Tory MP Ann Widdecombe called the remarks "grossly insensitive" on the same programme. After consulting Mrs Blair, No 10 said that "if any offence has been taken from the interpretation of her comments then Mrs Blair is obviously sorry. None was intended and it goes without saying that she condemns the atrocity today in the strongest possible terms, along with all right-minded people". 2 - Israel admits bombers motivated by 'misery' AFP [ FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2002 7:41:55 PM ] JERUSALEM: In the first such admission by a member of the Israeli cabinet, Defence Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer acknowledged on Friday that Palestinian suicide bombers are motivated by "misery" and "hopelessness". But the Labour party leader who holds the reins of the military in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's coalition government also accused militant groups of "seducing" the bombers who have killed scores of Israeli civilians. "Certainly, there is misery. Certainly, there is frustration. Certainly they feel hopelessness," Ben Eliezer told the Haaretz newspaper. "But then, at the moment of the crisis, someone from one of these death organisations comes and seduces them," he said. "The environmental factor is the key, not the socio-economic situation, or whether they're working or unemployed, or the years of oppression and built-up frustration, or whether they're educated or not," Ben Eliezer said. "These suicide bombers aren't created out of nowhere. They aren't born like that. The Islamic Jihad and the Tanzim and Hamas find. "It's the most cynical and cruel exploitation of human lives, of young people's lives especially. The weak, like them, are caught," he said. Tanzim is an armed group linked to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah group, while the radical Islamic Jihad and Hamas groups have claimed some of the bloodiest bombings in the 21- month Palestinian intifada. Ben Eliezer insisted the "environment exploits fragile personalities and gets them swept up in a current" of violence. But he stressed that "there is no common denominator" that makes a suicide bomber. "Sometimes it's a random, momentary thing. Sometimes there's more of a religious background. Some of them say 'I die, therefore I exist'. They think a heroic death will give meaning to their existence," he said. "Some are brainwashed with a religious message. And some come to it in an unpredictable way," said the minister, who recently took the usual step of personally talking with two would- be bombers in prison. He acknowledging that Israeli "military actions rekindle the frustration, hatred and despair and are the incubator for the terror to come." Ben Eliezer's comments were all the more striking since they come hard on the heels of two suicide bom

Armed Israeli settlers appeared to have taken the law into their own hands yesterday by raiding a West Bank town as divisions emerged within the Israeli government over how to respond to the latest wave of Palestinian attacks. Palestinian witnesses said that a convoy of Jewish settlers, some armed with M-16 assault rifles, descended on the Arab town of Howara and killed a 22-year-old Arab man and set fire to cars. Israeli police said they were checking the reports. The attack took place while the settlement of Itamar built on occupied territory just south of Nablus was burying the victims of Thursday evening's attack in which a Palestinian gunman killed five people, including a mother and three of her eight children. The resumption of sectarian attacks which were an almost daily feature of the early days of the 21-month intifada comes as a debate rages within the Israeli government over how to respond to Palestinian assaults, in which 33 Israelis were killed within three days this week the majority in two suicide bombings in Jerusalem. There is fury in Israel that Palestinian suicide bombers are again randomly blowing up civilians. There is also deep disappointment that these attacks have resumed less than two months after the Israeli army sent thousands of tanks and troops into the West Bank in its largest offensive against the Palestinians since 1967. Earlier this week, Ariel Sharon's government said that it intended to reoccupy the pockets of Palestinian-run land on the West Bank the rest is already Israeli- controlled and remain "as long as terror continued". It described this plan as an important change of policy, although its forces have already been conducting almost daily raids into Palestinian- administered towns, and for months encircled Yasser Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah. The policy was coupled with a partial call-up of reservists. But divisions have emerged over the reoccupation plan within Mr Sharon's coalition government. Benjamin Ben- Eliezer, the Defence Minister, and the Foreign Minister Shimon Peres both from Labour denied that they have agreed to the new policy. Yesterday, in response to the Itamar killings, Israeli forces sent 50 tanks into Nablus, and dug in further in Jenin, but it was unclear how long they planned to stay. A meeting of Israel's security cabinet yesterday appeared slightly to soften its position, saying only that the army should remain in Palestinian areas as long as necessary. Concerns abound within Israel that total reoccupation of the West Bank would lead to more casualties in the army. The Palestinians have portrayed the reoccupation policy as part of a long-held plan by Mr Sharon to seize control of all of the West Bank, crushing any chance of a Palestinian state. Underlying this debate is a general uncertainty in Israel over its next move. Assassinations, blockades, curfews, mass arrests, demolitions, and the bombing of the Palestinian infrastructure have failed to stop the attacks. Figures issued by the Israeli Defence Forces yesterday said that in the two months since the end of the offensive, called Operation Defensive Shield, 84 Israelis have been killed, and 276 injured. The international community is pressing Mr Sharon to couple his many conditions for talks led by a demand for a complete end to Palestinian violence and major reforms in Palestinian society with political moves, arguing that no progress will be possible unless the Palestinians have some form of hope. But every new murder of a civilian hardens the views of the extremists. Yesterday the latter made their views clear in a full page advertisement inThe Jerusalem Post, a sister paper of The Daily Telegraph that has written extensively on the problem of incitement in the Palestinian media. The unsigned advertisement called on the army to respond to suicide bombings with artillery and air assaults on the killer's home area attacks which the advert admitted would "inevitably kill and injure hundreds, even thousands, of Arabs". -Caveat Lector- http://www.naplesnews.com/02/06/business/d794732a.htm U.S. aid to Israel subsidizes a potent weapons exporter Thursday, June 20, 2002 By JIM KRANE, Associated Press At an arms trade fair in Paris this week, Israel showed the world's military shoppers fruits of its high-tech arms industry, including its Merkava tank, unmanned spy planes and the planet's most sophisticated missile defense system. Israeli soldiers guard an Israeli Merkava tank at the Eurosatory military equipment show held in Villepinte, north of Paris, June 17. Israel showed the world's military shoppers fruits of its hich-tech arm industry. Michel Euler/AP With its tourist industry all but shuttered by a 21-month Palestinian uprising and high-tech in a slump, the Jewish state depends deeply on the foreign currency earnings of its weapons industry, now the world's 10th largest. Deftly marketed missiles, radar and other products from Israeli companies now compete with those of top-tier arms producers including the United States, reaping about $2 billion of a $27 billion yearly worldwide market, said Kuti Mor, deputy director general of Israel's Ministry of Defense. In France, Turkey, The Netherlands and Finland, Israeli companies have edged such U.S. firms as Raytheon, Northrop Grumman and General Atomics out of arms deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years. The irony, experts say, is that tens of billions of U.S. tax dollars and transfers of American military technology helped create and nurture Israel's industry, in effect subsidizing a foreign competitor. No other country receives as much U.S. aid or freedom to plow it into its own export industries as Israel, say experts in academia, industry and the U.S. government. "It's allowed them to advance faster than Lockheed or Boeing or Hughes would have liked," said David Lewis, a doctoral candidate at Rutgers University who has researched Israel's defense industry for a forthcoming book. While the United States gets certain benefits from its 50-year partnership with Israel political leverage, a proving ground for new weapons and intelligence cooperation among them critics point to a serious downside. "It's a new concept for most people." said Joel Johnson, a vice president at the Aerospace Industries Association of America, which represents many of the largest U.S. arms producers. "We give them money to build stuff for themselves and the U.S. taxpayer gets nothing in return." The rationale, said Richard Fisher, a defense analyst with the Jamestown Foundation, is that Washington is willing to sacrifice some defense industry competitiveness in order to give Israel incentive to make peace. Supporters of Israel tend to view the transfers of U.S. technology and funds as good for both countries' economies, akin to post-World War II assistance for Europe and Japan. "It's true that Israel sometimes competes with the U.S., but so do all those countries," said Mark Regev, a spokesman at the Israeli Embassy in Washington D.C. "Is it that different than American aid to Japan, or the Marshall Plan in western Europe?" Beyond competing with U.S. armaments, Israeli weapons also flow to countries off-limits to American companies. Its weapons buttress the arsenals of nations such as China that the United States considers strategic competitors, alarming U.S. military planners. Last year, U.S. surveillance planes flying along China's coast were threatened by Chinese fighter jets armed with Israeli missiles. During the series of airborne confrontations, a Chinese jet crashed after colliding with a U.S. spy plane, killing the Chinese pilot and disabling the U.S. plane. The incident sparked a bitter diplomatic row as China detained the American crew for 11 days. Had Chinese fighter pilots been given the order to fire, they could have brought down the U.S. planes with Israeli Python III missiles. U.S. technology given to the Israelis in the form of the Sidewinder missile was used in the development of the Python, said Larry Wortzel, former U.S. Army attache in Beijing and now a military analyst at the Heritage Foundation. U.S. defense chiefs say Israel sold China the missiles without informing the United States. "Generally speaking, we're not in favor of such capable weapons systems being proliferated to a variety of nations around the world," Rear Adm. Craig Quigley said in a Pentagon briefing last year. "That's a good missile, and its capabilities are considerable." In 2000, Israel bowed to U.S. pressure and canceled the sale to China of its AWACS-style airborne early warning radar planes. The director general of Israel's finance ministry, Ohad Marani, said Israel typically discusses arms sales with the Americans. "We don't sell systems that upset the Pentagon," Marani said. Israel's arms industry nevertheless continues to put great emphasis on the Chinese market, hawking its spy planes and radar systems at recent trade shows in Beijing and Singapore.
[CTRL] Israeli Troops Accused of Destruction
-Caveat Lector- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A20527-2002Jun20.html In Jenin, Hospital Officials Recount a Costly Operation Israeli Troops Accused of Destruction By John Ward Anderson and Molly Moore Washington Post Foreign Service Friday, June 21, 2002; Page A16 JENIN, West Bank, June 20 -- A team of three doctors huddled over a table in al-Razi hospital's administrative building, performing a delicate, time-consuming task. Between them was a roll of Scotch tape, and they were piecing together jagged shreds of money that they said was torn apart when Israeli soldiers blew up the hospital safe. Fixing the money was the day's most important operation, since seven of the hospital's 10 patients had checked out after the soldiers ordered the administration building evacuated. Hospital workers said the Israeli troops threw a grenade into the building's foyer and sprayed it with automatic-rifle fire, blew up the safe and the door to the electrical wiring closet in the basement, and demolished the laundry room with heavy machine-gun fire that ripped through the wall from a tank outside. The rounds destroyed a $13,600 washer, dryer and iron from Denmark that were so new they were still in their shipping containers. "A soldier pounded the [laundry] machine and said, 'This is not more important than 20 persons killed in Jerusalem,' " referring to a suicide bus attack Tuesday, according to Ali Jabarin, vice chairman of the hospital. "He was a terrorist, but you are not a terrorist," Jabarin said he replied, pleading with troops not to damage the building and its contents. "You are a soldier . . . and this is a hospital." Jenin, a city of about 60,000, was among six West Bank cities Israeli forces have reentered over the past two days after two suicide bombings in Jerusalem left 26 Israelis dead and about 100 injured. Following the first blast, the Israeli government announced a new policy of reoccupying and maintaining control of Palestinian-administered territory "as long as terror continues." Jenin, which has been the point of origin for a number of suicide bombers, was taken over and put under a 24-hour curfew on Wednesday. Over the past two days, troops, tanks and armored personnel carriers have also moved into parts of Bethlehem and the adjoining Deheishe refugee camp, the community of Beitunia on the outskirts of Ramallah, suburban areas of Nablus and Tulkarm, and Qalqilyah. "Forces will stay in the cities until they achieve their operational aims," the army said in a statement. Tanks and armored personnel carriers patrolled Jenin's deserted streets today, chewing up the pavement and chasing back the few residents -- mostly young boys -- who dared venture out-of-doors. Barrages of heavy machine-gun fire frequently reverberated across the city, punctuated by the occasional boom of tank blasts. The acrid smell of gunpowder filled the city center. [Palestinian officials said Israeli troops blew up a building early Friday, causing a nearby building to collapse, killing a 14-year-old Palestinian, news services reported.] Residents said hundreds of men between the ages of 15 and 50 have been detained for security and identification checks since Wednesday. Many have been released, but others are being held for further interrogation, they said. Hundreds of men from Jenin and the adjacent refugee camp underwent the same treatment in April, when Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered a broad offensive across the West Bank in response to a bombing that killed 26 people. Haitham Awad Abuzeineh, 37, a resident of the Jenin refugee camp interviewed by phone, said he was one of the many men who turned themselves in after Israeli forces drove through the streets in jeeps with loudspeakers, ordering men to report to the local boys school for a security check. He said he was held for about 13 hours while soldiers checked computer records. When they discovered that he had no record, he said, they released him. Those with records were held for further interrogation, he said, adding that while he was not mistreated, he heard loud screams from those undergoing questioning. Residents said Israeli tanks and soldiers have been entering Jenin at will for months, but a full and permanent reoccupation would make matters even worse. "People are becoming fed up with the situation," said Mahmoud Subaneh, 47, an out-of-work bus driver who was interviewed on his patio overlooking the main street as two tanks clanked by, one pointing the barrel of its cannon at his home. "They cannot work, they have no money, and even when the shop owners open in the morning, the tanks force them to close." But if Israeli troops stay for the long term, he said, "Yes, life will get worse. Then all the people will become suicide bombers. I can take it for two or three years, but when I find that I can't bring food home to my son, I will become a suicide bomber. "As long as there is an occupation, and there are Israelis wh

(ABCNEWS.com) The White Van Were Israelis Detained on Sept. 11 Spies? June 21 Millions saw the horrific images of the World Trade Center attacks, and those who saw them won't forget them. But a New Jersey homemaker saw something that morning that prompted an investigation into five young Israelis and their possible connection to Israeli intelligence. Maria, who asked us not to use her last name, had a view of the World Trade Center from her New Jersey apartment building. She remembers a neighbor calling her shortly after the first plane hit the towers. She grabbed her binoculars and watched the destruction unfolding in lower Manhattan. But as she watched the disaster, something else caught her eye. Maria says she saw three young men kneeling on the roof of a white van in the parking lot of her apartment building. "They seemed to be taking a movie," Maria said. The men were taking video or photos of themselves with the World Trade Center burning in the background, she said. What struck Maria were the expressions on the men's faces. "They were like happy, you know They didn't look shocked to me. I thought it was very strange," she said. She found the behavior so suspicious that she wrote down the license plate number of the van and called the police. Before long, the FBI was also on the scene, and a statewide bulletin was issued on the van. The plate number was traced to a van owned by a company called Urban Moving. Around 4 p.m. on Sept. 11, the van was spotted on a service road off Route 3, near New Jersey's Giants Stadium. A police officer pulled the van over, finding five men, between 22 and 27 years old, in the vehicle. The men were taken out of the van at gunpoint and handcuffed by police. The arresting officers said they saw a lot that aroused their suspicion about the men. One of the passengers had $4,700 in cash hidden in his sock. Another was carrying two foreign passports. A box cutter was found in the van. But perhaps the biggest surprise for the officers came when the five men identified themselves as Israeli citizens. We Are Not Your Problem According to the police report, one of the passengers told the officers they had been on the West Side Highway in Manhattan "during the incident" referring to the World Trade Center attack. The driver of the van, Sivan Kurzberg, told the officers, "We are Israeli. We are not your problem. Your problems are our problems. The Palestinians are the problem." The other passengers were his brother Paul Kurzberg, Yaron Shmuel, Oded Ellner and Omer Marmari. When the men were transferred to jail, the case was transferred out of the FBI's Criminal Division, and into the bureau's Foreign Counterintelligence Section, which is responsible for espionage cases, ABCNEWS has learned. One reason for the shift, sources told ABCNEWS, was that the FBI believed Urban Moving may have been providing cover for an Israeli intelligence operation. After the five men were arrested, the FBI got a warrant and searched Urban Moving's Weehawken, N.J., offices. The FBI searched Urban Moving's offices for several hours, removing boxes of documents and a dozen computer hard drives. The FBI also questioned Urban Moving's owner. His attorney insists that his client answered all of the FBI's questions. But when FBI agents tried to interview him again a few days later, he was gone. Three months later 2020's cameras photographed the inside of Urban Moving, and it looked as if the business had been shut down in a big hurry. Cell phones were lying around; office phones were still connected; and the property of dozens of clients remained in the warehouse. The owner had also cleared out of his New Jersey home, put it up for sale and returned with his family to Israel. A Scary Situation Steven Gordon, the attorney for the five Israeli detainees, acknowledged that his clients' actions on Sept. 11 would easily have aroused suspicions. "You got a group of guys that are taking pictures, on top of a roof, of the World Trade Center. They're speaking in a foreign language. They got two passports on 'em. One's got a wad of cash on him, and they got box cutters. Now that's a scary situation." But Gordon insisted that his clients were just fi
[CTRL] Call to protest
-Caveat Lector- >From http://www.gulf-news.com/Articles/news.asp?ArticleID=55171 }}}>Begin Call to protest against Israeli genocide Abu Dhabi | By A Staff Reporter | 21/06/2002 Dr Fr Attallah Hanna The Orthodox Church of Jerusalem has urged churches around the world to protest against against Israeli atrocities committed against innocent women and children in the Holy Land. Dr Fr Attallah Hanna, official spokesman of the Orthodox Church of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, called upon the churches to break their silence over the Israeli genocide. Delivering a lecture at the Zayed Centre for Coordination and Follow-Up, Dr Fr Hanna said: "We call upon world churches, especially the Vatican, to raise their voices against barbaric acts of Israel and play their role to help bring permanent peace in the region. "We call upon the world Christian community to extend their support to the Palestinian people in their struggle against Israeli brutalities." Dr Fr Hanna said though each church has its own characteristic, it is their duty to reject injustice and exploitation. Referring to calls for a political party by Palestinian Christians, he said such a move will worsen the situation and create division among the people. "We have no problem with the Christian community joining any political party in Palestine, but we reject and refuse a Christian party. It will further divide Muslims and Christians on sectarian grounds, which will only serve the interests of the Zionists." Elaborating on churches in the U.S., Dr Fr Hanna said there are various groups in the United States that have committed themselves to solely serve the Zionist interests of the Israeli government. "In fact, they are not churches but Zionist shops to serve their interests. They interpret the Holy Verses of the Bible to serve Zionist interests." The Orthodox Church official also clarified that Palestinian Christians are being ill- treated for their affiliation to the Orient or the East. He explained that Christianity originated from the Arab civilisation in the east. "It is a wrong notion in the West that Christianity is the religion of the West. The faith spread from Palestine, the country of Sham (Syria) in the Arab world," he said. "We are being oppressed by Israeli regimes for our affiliation with region. We are proud to be affiliated with the Arab civilisation where our roots come from," Dr Fr Hanna said. He also referred to the UAE's support to the Palestinian people in their war against evil. He said the people of Palestine, both Muslims and Christians, are grateful to the UAE and its people for their continued support. "I want to address a word to our brothers in the UAE. Thanks for your care and generous support. We are grateful for all that you have done for our women and children," he said. Dr Fr Hanna also thanked President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his support and pledge to rebuild the houses of Palestinian people, the refugee camps and mosques and churches demolished by Israeli troops. "The noble stance of His Highness Sheikh Zayed and the UAE role towards humanitarian and social services have a special place in every heart in Palestine," he said. © Al Nisr Publishing LLC - Gulf News Online End<{{{ ~~~ Forwarded as information only; no automatic endorsement + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. section 107, this material is distributed without charge or profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving this type of information for non-profit research and educational purposes only. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
