English - International justice system under attack

The new system of international justice, which came about with the
creation of the International Criminal Court (ICC), is under attack. The
USA is trying to ensure that US nationals are exempt from ICC jurisdiction
over genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Act now to protect the international justice system.

The ICC will investigate and prosecute people accused of genocide, crimes
against humanity and war crimes. The USA is attacking this new system of
international justice by pressing states around the world to enter into
impunity agreements not to surrender US nationals to the ICC. In many
cases the US government is threatening to withdraw military assistance
from countries that will not agree.

Such agreements are unlawful under international law. They threaten to
undermine international efforts to stop criminals ever again planning and
committing the worst crimes known to humanity.

Bush planned Iraq 'regime change' before becoming President

A SECRET blueprint for US global domination reveals that President
Bush and his cabinet were planning a premeditated attack on Iraq to
secure 'regime change' even before he took power in January 2001.

The blueprint, uncovered by the Sunday Herald, for the creation of a
'global Pax Americana' was drawn up for Dick Cheney (now vice-
president), Donald Rumsfeld (defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz
(Rumsfeld's deputy), George W Bush's younger brother Jeb and Lewis
Libby (Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled Rebuilding
America's Defences: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New
Century, was written in September 2000 by the neo-conservative
think-tank Project for the New American Century (PNAC).

The plan shows Bush's cabinet intended to take military control of
the Gulf region whether or not Saddam Hussein was in power. It says:
'The United States has for decades sought to play a more permanent
role in Gulf regional security. While the unresolved conflict with
Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial
American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the
regime of Saddam Hussein.'

The PNAC document supports a 'blueprint for maintaining global US
pre-eminence, precluding the rise of a great power rival, and shaping
the international security order in line with American principles and
interests'.

This 'American grand strategy' must be advanced for 'as far into the
future as possible', the report says. It also calls for the US to
'fight and decisively win multiple, simultaneous major theatre wars'
as a 'core mission'.

The report describes American armed forces abroad as 'the cavalry on
the new American frontier'. The PNAC blueprint supports an earlier
document written by Wolfowitz and Libby that said the US must
'discourage advanced industrial nations from challenging our
leadership or even aspiring to a larger regional or global role'.

[The Independent - 15 September 2002]:Years ago, in a snug
underground restaurant in downtown Tehran, drinking duq - an Iranian
beverage of mint and yoghurt - Saddam Hussein's former head of
nuclear research told me what happened when he made a personal appeal
for the release of a friend from prison. I was taken directly from
my Baghdad office to the director of state security, he said. I was
thrown down the stairs to an underground cell and then stripped and
trussed up on a wheel attached to the ceiling. Then the director came
to see me.

 'You will tell us all about your friends - everything,' he said.
'In your field of research, you are an expert, the best. In my field
of research, I am the best man.' That's when the whipping and the
electrodes began.

All this happened, of course, when Saddam Hussein was still our
friend, when we were encouraging him to go on killing Iranians in his
1980-88 war against Tehran, when the US government - under President
Bush Snr - was giving Iraq preferential agricultural assistance
funding. Not long before, Saddam's pilots had fired a missile into an
American warship called the Stark and almost sunk it. Pilot error,
claimed Saddam - the American vessel had been mistaken for an Iranian
oil tanker - and the US government cheerfully forgave the Iraqi
dictator.

Those were the days. But sitting in the United Nations General
Assembly last week, watching President Bush Jr tell us with all his
Texan passion about the beatings and the whippings and the rapes in
Iraq, you would have thought they'd just been discovered. For sheer
brazen historical hypocrisy, it would have been difficult to beat
that part of the President's speech. Saddam, it appears, turned into
a bad guy when he invaded Kuwait in 1990. Before that, he was just a
loyal ally of the United States, a strong man - as the news agency
boys like to call our dictators - rather than a tyrant.

But the real lie in the President's speech - that which has dominated
American political discourse since the crimes against humanity on 11
September last year - was the virtual absence of any attempt to
explain the real reasons why the United States has found itself under
attack.

In his mendacious article in this newspaper last week, President
Bush's Defense Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, also attempted to mask
this reality. The 11 September assault, he announced, was an attack
on people who believe in freedom, who practise tolerance and who
defend the inalienable rights of man. He made, as usual, absolutely
no reference to the Middle East, to America's woeful, biased policies
in that region, to its ruthless support for Arab dictators who do its
bidding - for Saddam Hussein, for example, at a time when the head of
Iraqi nuclear research was undergoing his Calvary - nor to America's
military presence in the holiest of Muslim lands, nor to its
unconditional support for Israel's occupation of Palestinian land in
the West Bank and Gaza.

Oddly, a very faint ghost of this reality did creep into the start of
the President's UN address last week. It was contained in two
sentences whose importance was totally ignored by the American press
- and whose true meaning might have been lost on Mr Bush himself,
given that he did not write his speech - but it was revealing
nonetheless. Our common security, he said, is challenged by
regional conflicts - ethnic and religious strife that is ancient but
not inevitable. In the Middle East, there can be no peace for either
side without freedom for both sides. Then he repeated his old line
about the need for an independent and democratic Palestine.

This was perhaps as close as we've got, so far, to an official
admission that this whole terrible crisis is about the Middle East.
If this is a simple war for civilisation against evil - the line
that Mr Bush was so cruelly peddling again to the survivors of 11
September and the victims' relatives last week - then what are these
regional challenges? Why did Palestine insinuate its way into the
text of President Bush's UN speech? Needless to say, this strange,
uncomfortable little truth was of no interest to the New York and
Washington media, whose wilful refusal to investigate the real
political causes of this whole catastrophe has led to a news coverage
that is as bizarre as it is schizophrenic.

Before dawn on 11 September last week, I watched six American
television channels and saw the twin towers fall to the ground 18
times. The few references to the suicide killers who committed the
crime made not a single mention of the fact that they were Arabs.
Last week, The Washington Post and The New York Times went to
agonising lengths to separate their Middle East coverage from the 11
September commemorations, as if they might be committing some form of
sacrilege or be acting in bad taste if they did not. The challenge
for the administration is to offer a coherent and persuasive
explanation of how the Iraq danger is connected to

Among the report's advised courses of action are:

- Use of the conflict over Saddam in Iraq to gain permanent placement of US

- Increased deployment of US troops in Europe and weakening of the nascent
moves toward the political and defense identity of the European Union

- Development of permanent military bases in Southeast Asia

- Development of strategically placed military bases, with mobile forces to
control US interests anywhere in the world

- Multiple theaters of war to maintain US military dominance in the world
and prevent any other nation from developing a force equal to the US

- Use of US military troops to police the world in a constabulary role

- Development of US missile defense program capable of destroying missiles
in any region of the world

- Development of new military technology, including the US use of biological
weapons, and the creation of space forces to include cyberspace as well as
air space.

It doesn't amaze me anymore. I moderate a list where there's about 6
people, who have been banned for everything from plagiarism to
stalking, and who keep trying to come back under different aliases.
They must have 300 or more aliases. I'm now at the point where, for ALL
of the lists I moderate, I require emails from potential members so I
can run header checks. I'm thinking about no longer accepting freemail
accounts. One list I'm on required me to use my ISP email, and then let
me switch to my Yahoo email after I had established myself.

change organizations who call themselves conservative who really
are provisions made for dissidents, etc.

Most newbie conservatives let conservative leadership be defined
for them by others.  Disillusion sets in after a few years.

The Monday night taped conversation from a client at the Center for
Drug-Free Living.
OPD Operator: You're being recorded.
Caller: Yes, I'd like to make a report please.
OPD Operator: OK, what happened.
Caller: I am located at the Center for Drug-Free Living, and I would
like a police officer to come out, please.
OPD Operator: What address are you at, ma'am?
Caller: (gives address)
OPD Operator: OK, can you tell me what happened?
Caller: This is basically a treatment center for women with children.
OPD Operator: Yeah.
Caller: And one of the women here was caught buying crack cocaine
tonight. And a lot of the women are upset because she's been caught
about five times. And we want something done because our children are
here, and they just keep letting it slip under the counter and carpet.
OPD Operator: Your name?
Caller: I'm anonymous.
OPD Operator: Well, we're going to have to meet with someone.
Caller: OK. Can I put all the girls? Because we're all here; we're all
here wanting to talk to someone.
OPD Operator: Who was she caught buying the drugs by? Who caught her
buying the drugs?
Caller: The staff.
OPD Operator: Pardon me?
Caller: Staff. They said, you know, because it's basically Noelle Bush.
And she keeps getting out of it. Because every . . . she does this all
the time and she gets out of it because she's the governor's daughter.
But we're sick of it here 'cause we have to do what's right, but she
gets treated like some kind of princess. And everybody's tired of it,
you know. We're just trying to get our lives together, and this girl's
bringing drugs on property.
OPD Operator: OK. And the staff caught her?
Caller: Yes.
OPD Operator: They caught her today?
Caller: Yes. This is just about 30 minutes ago.
OPD Operator: And she's still there though.
Caller: Yes. And she is on probation, I guess. And all kinds of stuff. I
don't know what all that is. But . . . And procedure is that they would
call the police, but they're not doing it here because of who she is.
OPD Operator: OK. So the staff is refusing to do anything about it.
Caller: Because of who she is.
OPD Operator: OK. OK. OK, if you don't want to leave me your name that's
fine. But somebody needs to meet with the officers when they get there.
Caller: OK, we'll be out front. Do you know how long . . .
OPD Operator: OK. All of you will be out front?
Caller: Yeah. There's 24 of us.
OPD Operator: OK. Hopefully, it will be within the next maybe 15 or 20
minutes. It may be longer depending on how many officers are available
now.

America plans PR blitz on Saddam

THE Bush Administration is to launch a multimillion-dollar PR blitz
against Saddam Hussein, using advertising techniques to persuade crucial
target groups that the Iraqi leader must be ousted. 
The campaign will consist of dossiers of evidence detailing Saddam's
breaches of UN resolutions, and will be launched this week at American
and foreign audiences, particularly in Arab nations sceptical of US
policy in the region. 
The White House is aware that it lacks substantial new intelligence on
Saddam's nuclear programme or evidence directly linking Baghdad to the
September 11 attacks. But it will build on the contents of President's
Bush's speech made to the UN General Assembly last week, in which he
listed Saddam's violations of UN resolutions. 
The campaign, which will initially receive over $200 million (£130
million), will be overseen by the Office of Global Communications, whose
existence will not be formally announced until next month.

In the post 9/11 world, there is undoubtedly a government official whose job is to 
invent innocuous-sounding, if not reassuring, acronyms for government initiatives 
against terrorism.

Operation TIPS is a case in point. The Terrorism Information and Prevention System 
will recruit millions of utility, transportation and other workers to report on 
potentially unusual or suspicious activity in public places. In other words, 
Operations TIPS is using private citizens to spy on each other.

The Bush administration's reliance on acronyms with public-relations punch was 
apparent as early as last October when, still reeling from the events of Sept. 11, it 
proposed and Congress swiftly passed the USA Patriot Act (The Uniting and 
Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and 
Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001). Like Operation TIPS, the label doesn't tell the 
whole story.

Among the less well-known aspects of the Patriot Act are provisions permitting the 
Justice Department to obtain information secretly from booksellers and librarians 
about customers' and patrons' reading, Internet and book-buying habits, merely by 
alleging that the records are relevant to an anti-terrorism investigation. The act 
prohibits librarians and booksellers from disclosing these subpoenas, so the objects 
of investigation don't know and therefore cannot defend themselves and their privacy, 
or contest the government's actions in court.

In a sample of 1,000 libraries responding to a survey last February, 85 reported 
receiving requests to turn over information about patrons to police or FBI agents. We 
have no way to know how many other libraries, and how many booksellers, received 
similar requests. We don't know how many requests were made under the Patriot Act, 
because of its secrecy provisions. What we do know is that the Patriot Act authorizes 
the government to obtain information secretly from librarians and booksellers about 
customers' and patrons' interests and activities, and that law enforcement officials 
are seeking such information. The Justice Department has refused to provide any data 
about these investigations, even to Congress.

Librarians and booksellers have voiced their dismay at being conscripted, under court 
order and threat of prosecution, to report covertly on their patrons and customers. 
Secretly obtaining information about what people read, to try to figure out what they 
think, undermines more than privacy; it threatens core First Amendment principles, as 
many librarians and booksellers understand.

The Constitution clearly protects the right to read a book, embrace an idea or express 
a thought - even an unpopular or unpatriotic book, idea or thought. The freedom of 
thought and expression is so fundamental to our democracy that, as the Supreme Court 
recently noted, the government may not prohibit speech because it increases the 
chance an unlawful act will be committed 'at some indefinite future time.' In so 
holding, the court relied on the vital distinction between words and deed, between 
ideas and conduct. In other words, the government is free to prohibit and punish 
illegal conduct, but may not criminalize ideas or punish people for their thoughts. 
Perversely, under the Patriot Act, reading certain books or researching certain topics 
- both constitutionally protected activities - now apparently provide grounds for 
criminal investigation.

The Justice Department's recent decision to repeal the domestic terrorism surveillance 
guidelines unmistakably sends this signal. The guidelines were adopted in 1976 in 
response to revelations that, under the infamous COINTELPRO (counterintelligence) 
program, civil rights and anti-war activists who were neither accused nor suspected of 
crimes became targets of government investigation because of their outspoken criticism 
of government policies. To prevent such abuses, the 1976 guidelines authorized 
surveillance of political, religious and other groups only if there was actual 
evidence of criminal activity. Without this restriction, covert surveillance of 
political dissidents with no known connection to criminal activity is bound to resume.

According to a brief recently filed by the Justice Department in defense of secret 
immigration hearings, the First Amendment creates no general right of access to 
government information or operations. The gag order imposed on librarians and 
booksellers goes even further in withholding information from the object of an 
investigation. As a result, proceedings under the act will be shrouded in secrecy, not 
only making it impossible for targeted individuals to counter the government's 
allegations, but also preventing the public at large from

War and Politics Do Mix, Apparently
Calif. Says Here's the Proof, Now Do Something



This is the week the gloves came off, and with them any remaining pretense that GOP
candidates are not politicizing the war on terrorism.

Across the country, GOP House and Senate candidates are emphasizing the possibility of
war in Iraq, either touting their support for Bush or highlighting their opponents'
reservations -- past or present -- about military strikes against the Baghdad regime,
according to several candidates and party strategists.  - Washington Post

With control of the House up for grabs in next months mid-term elections, GOP 
candidates
in tightly contested races have now openly hitched their hopes to the Bush 
administrations
war wagon.

The change in tactics was most notable in states where the stakes were highest,
particularly in Senate races in South Dakota, Minnesota and Georgia.

These events mark a shift in the midterm elections toward a topic that Republicans
generally favor -- the Bush administration's tough stand against Hussein -- at the 
expense
of subjects that Democrats prefer -- domestic matters such as health care benefits and 
the
fiscal health of the Social Security system. - Washington Post

Democrats worried in recent weeks that if they openly questioned the administrations
policy on Iraq their queries would be later used against them in future campaigns. 
Those
fears were reinforced this week by a series of GOP ads in key districts. The ads used
comments and questions made in 1991 during the debate on the Gulf War to paint
Democratic opponents as soft on Saddam.

Targets of such ads included incumbent Paul Wellstone (D-MN), and South Dakota Senator
Tim Johnson. Both men were in the forefront of demanding open debate and congressional
approval for the Gulf War.

By dredging up those earlier remarks and using them in the context of current tensions,
GOP strategists hope to accomplish two goals. First, to do whatever it takes to 
maintain
control of the House and, if possible, regain control of the Senate this November.

Second, to effectively muzzle congressional criticism of the administrations policies
regarding Iraq, terrorism and homeland security. Clearly Republicans have weighed the
cost/benefit ratio and decided they have more to gain than they risk losing by 
politicizing the
war against terrorism and possible war against Iraq.

The issue matrix is changing, admitted South Dakota GOP challenger John Thune.
Whether Tim Johnson likes it or not, this is on the mind of voters.

Which of course is the whole point. When it comes to issues, war and talk of war always
trump domestic concerns. GOP candidates suffer whenever the issues on the publics mind
include domestic problems such as the soaring federal deficit, Social Security and 
Medicare.

Democrats and Republicans alike recognize the very real threat posed by terrorists and
Saddam Hussein. The only question is how much damage is the administration willing to
inflict on our democracy in its haste to call for war?

California: We Told You So

Californians have long suspected that Texas energy producers and wholesalers like Enron
and Dynegy, mugged them back in 2000-2001. Yesterday they presented the proof.

The report by the California Public Utilities Commission blamed Houston- based power
generators Dynegy and Reliant as well as Duke Energy, Mirant and AES/Williams for
keeping significant portions of their capacity idle or off the market on key days from
November 2000 through May 2001, the height of California's energy crisis. - Houston
Chronicle

Had the generators produced the power they had available, most of the statewide
blackouts and service interruptions could have been avoided without overloading the
transmission lines linking Northern and Southern California, the report concluded.

Democratic California Gov. Gray Davis has long been critical of both the Bush
administrations Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Justice Department for
failing to take action against rogue energy companies. Yesterday he said the states 
own
investigation challenges the DOJ to finally take action.

This report confirms that energy generators manipulated California's energy market and
stopped at nothing -- including putting the health and safety of Californians at risk 
-- in the
name of ripping off California ratepayers, said Davis in a statement.

Montreal protesters force cancellation
of Netanyahu campus speech


MONTREAL (CBC News) -- Former Israeli
prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu
cancelled a speech at Concordia University
in Montreal on Monday, Sept.
9, after several hundred demonstrators
managed to get into a university
building.


The demonstrators, who called Netanyahu
anti-Palestinian and a
terrorist, threw chairs and newspaper
boxes at police, who were trying
to evacuate the building where Netanyahu
was supposed to speak.
Netanyahu was not present.


There was a long standoff between
the pro-Palestinian demonstrators and
the students who had come to hear
Netanyahu speak.


The demonstrators were pleased they
had stopped him talking. There's no
free speech for hate speech,
said Palestinian activist David
Battistuzzi.


Netanyahu was Israel's prime minister
from 1996 to 1999 as leader of the
Likud Party. Earlier this year, Likud
members voted against the
establishment of a Palestinian state.
Netanyahu was the driving force
behind the motion.

This morning my friends and I set
out to Concordia University, in the
heart of downtown Montreal, to hear
Benjamin Netanyahu speak. Many
articles were featured in the Montreal
papers leading up to today's
speech, warning of protest action. I had a good idea of what we would
face as we approached Concordia, but
I could never have predicted what
actually happened once we were there.


To enter the building we had to make
a giant circle around it, to get
to the supposedly safe
entrance. We had to walk right through a
volatile protest of hundreds of Palestinians
and their supporters in
keffiyehs, with flags, screaming vitriolic
hate. Once having run this
gauntlet, we waited patiently outside
the Bishop street entrance, held
back at the gate by security and police.


After about an hour they started admitting
us inside, but it was too
late because a huge group of Palestinian
'demonstrators' had appeared in
our midst. I was fortunately
right at the entrance, and as dozens of
violent protesters pushed their way
to the front, I tried to get
through. Right next to me appeared
the ringleader, who tried to push
his way in. The cop in front
of me . while
pulling me through the gate at the
same time.


I rested against the wall and watched
as at least a hundred (I think)
red-and-green coloured protesters
attacked the barriers and tried to get
in. Riot cops appeared, dozens
of them, and went to the gate as I and a
few others were herded into the building. There was yelling and
chanting, drumming and fighting going
on outside the doors, with
hundreds of our people stuck behind
the gate being abused by hundreds of
violent demonstrators.


A few of us were waiting after the
metal detectors for our friends to
come through, when all of a sudden
we heard loud chanting and yelling
INSIDE the building. The riot
cops came storming in and up the stairs
beside us, and we began hearing fighting,
crashing, yelling, punching.


Chaos broke out and riot cops made
us run for the door to the
auditorium. I thought we were going
to get killed, I swear. It was the
scariest feeling, because I knew that
these people wanted to hurt me and
anyone who supports Israel or is Jewish.


Once inside the auditorium, we were
told to be patient as more people
would drift in from the insanity outside. We waited inside for three
hours, as the commotion outside grew
increasingly loud. We could hear
chanting and yelling, and the protesters
began trashing the university
building. The police tear gassed
and pepper sprayed the entire building
and outside, and we began to feel
the effects if we stood too near the
doors.


After hoursof waiting, and bomb searches
by RCMP sniffer dogs, we were
informed that Bibi Netanyahu could
not speak after all - too much danger
to him and to us.


 This was an incredible disappointment
and we were naturally upset. We,
however, managed to maintain a kind
of composure and instead of
fighting, the 650 of us inside began
to sing Hatikvah, the national
anthem of the State of Israel. We
sang peace chants and then just
waited to be let out, in groups of
10, escorted by police.


The scene as we exited was disgusting. Benches were overturned, papers
and garbage streaked across the hallways,
and broken windows. We were
shoved outside directly into a HUGE
Palestinian riot, where some of our
people were apparently attacked. The
cops did nothing. We stood on one
side of the

WASHINGTON (AP) - American intelligence agencies received far more reports of
terrorist plotting to use planes as weapons before Sept. 11 than the U.S.
government has previously acknowledged, congressional investigators said
Wednesday.

While it was unclear whether any of the reports were in fact signs of the
impending attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon ( news - web sites),
investigators said the agencies never looked closely at the potential threat
of hijacked airliners flying into buildings. Those assertions came in a 30-
page statement by Eleanor Hill, staff director for the House and Senate
intelligence inquiry into the Sept. 11 attacks.

Hill's statement was being presented to committee members Wednesday at the
inquiry's first public hearings. Lawmakers have been meeting behind closed
doors since June, looking into intelligence failures leading up to the
attacks and how they can be corrected.

These public hearings are part of our search for the truth  not to point
fingers or pin blame, but with the goal of identifying and correcting
whatever systemic problems might have prevented our government from detecting
and disrupting al Qaida's plot, said Sen. Bob Graham ( news, bio, voting
record), chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Hill outlined 12 examples of intelligence information on the possible
terrorist use of airplanes as weapons, dating back to 1994. The last example
occurred a month before the attacks, when intelligence agencies were told of
a possible bin Laden plot to bomb the U.S. embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, or
crash a plane into it. But it contained no specifics pointing to the
impending Sept. 11 attacks.

In August 1998, U.S. intelligence learned that a group of unidentified Arabs
planned to fly an explosive-laden plane from a foreign country into the World
Trade Center, says the report. The report was given to the Federal Aviation
Administration ( news - web sites) and FBI ( news - web sites), which took
little action on it. The group may now be linked to bin Laden, the report
says.

Other intelligence suggested that bin Laden supporters might crash a plane
into a U.S. airport, or conduct a plot involving aircraft at New York and
Washington, the report said.

While generally aware of the possibility of this method of attack, the
Intelligence Community did not produce any specific assessments of the
likelihood that terrorists would use airplanes as weapons, the report said.


With revelations in the spring that President Bush ( news - web sites) had
learned a month before the attacks that that bin Laden wanted to hijack
airplanes, the White House defended the lack of disclosure of the information
by saying the president's briefing detailed plans for traditional hijackings,
not the use of airplanes as weapons.

National security adviser Condoleezza Rice ( news - web sites) said at the
time that the threat was vague and uncorroborated.

I don't think anybody could have predicted ... that they would try to use an
airplane as missile, Rice said. Had this president known of something more
specific or known that a plane was going to be used as a missile, he would
have acted on it.

Congressional investigators also said that an intelligence briefing two
months before the Sept. 11 attack warned that Osama bin Laden ( news - web
sites) would launch a spectacular terrorist attack against U.S. or Israeli
interests.

Between May and July 2001, the National Security Agency reported at least 33
communications indicating a possible, imminent terrorist attack.

The July 2001 briefing for senior government officials said that based on a
review of intelligence information over five months we believe that (bin
Laden) will launch a significant terrorist attack against U.S. and/or Israeli
interests in the coming weeks.

But Hill said the credibility of the sources was sometimes questionable and
no specific details about the attacks were available.

They generally did not contain specific information as to where, when and
how a terrorist attack might occur and generally are not corroborated by
further information, her statement said.

At Wednesday's hearing, leaders of two groups of victims' relatives, Stephen
Push and Kristin Breitweiser, were the first witnesses. Both lost spouses in
the attacks.

Breitweiser, whose husband Ron died at the World Trade Center, told lawmakers
that if the public had been aware of possible terrorist attacks, airport
security could have been bolstered and passengers may have thought twice
before boarding airplanes.

How many victims may have taken notice of these Middle Eastern men that were
boarding their plane? said Breitweiser, of Middletown, N.J. She is co-
founder of September 11th Advocates.

 President Bush spoke to the UN General Assembly on Thursday,
 September 12
 about the supposedly urgent need to attack Iraq. The following is a
 list of
 statements made by him that are either illogical, half-truths, or
 outright
 falsehoods, with responses to each.
 
 1. Twelve years ago, Iraq invaded Kuwait without provocation.
 
 Kuwait had been slant-drilling the Iraqi oil field of Rumallah as
 well as
 driving down the price of oil at a time when Iraq was in desperate
 need of
 funds to rebuild its infrastructure after the Iran-Iraq War (in
 which Iraq
 was the favored state of the US). While it is arguable whether this
 was
 justification for an invasion, this provocation is significantly
 less
 specious than that cited for, say, the American invasion of Panama
 seven
 months earlier.
 
 2. And the regime's forces were poised to continue their march to
 seize
 other countries and their resources.
 
 Satellite imagery showed no Iraqi military buildup in the border
 regions with
 Saudi Arabia in either Iraq or occupied Kuwait in September 1990,
 as revealed
 in a series of articles in the St.Petersburg (FL) Times in
 January 1991.
 Yet the elder President Bush fabricated this aggression to
 justify
 Operation Desert Shield.
 
 3. Had Saddam Hussein been appeased instead of stopped, he would
 have
 endangered the peace and stability of the world. Yet this
 aggression was
 stopped by the might of coalition forces and the will of the United
 Nations.
 
 Hussein was appeased by coalition forces. After the cease-fire of
 March 1991,
 Hussein asked for permission to fly air strikes against rebels in
 both the
 northern and southern no-fly zones of Iraq. The elder Bush granted
 Hussein's
 wish, even though the American President had publicly encouraged
 the Kurdish
 population of Iraq to rise up. Hussein brutally suppressed the
 rebellion.
 
 4. In 1991, Security Council Resolution 688 demanded that the
 Iraqi regime
 cease at once the repression of its own people, including the
 systematic
 repression of minorities, which the council said threatened
 international
 peace and security in the region. This demand goes ignored.
 
 Of course it goes ignored, considering Bush's father gave Hussein
 the green
 light to continue his brutal suppression of Iraq's minorities.
 
 5. Last year, the UN Commission on Human Rights found that Iraq
 continues to
 commit extremely grave violations of human rights and that the
 regime's
 repression is all-pervasive.
 
 Yes, and UN organizations have also repeatedly stated the
 devastating effects
 of US-led sanctions on the people of Iraq. Should Iraq then call on
 the
 international community to attack the US?
 
 6. Tens of thousands of political opponents and ordinary citizens
 have been
 subjected to arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, summary execution
 and torture
 by beating and burning, electric shock, starvation, mutilation and
 rape.
 
 Unfortunately, this is quite the norm in many places in the Middle
 East,
 including close American allies Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Pakistan.
 
 7. In 1993, Iraq attempted to assassinate the Emir of Kuwait and a
 former
 American president.
 
 In retaliation for this attempted assassination, evidence of which
 was
 dubious at best, the Clinton Administration launched 24 cruise
 missiles
 against Baghdad, killing six civilians, including artist Laila
 al-Attar. By
 this standard, Iraq could launch cruise missiles at Washington, as
 their
 leader has been the object of several assassination attempts by the
 US. (They
 would, of course, have to get in line behind Cuba, whose leader has

Jews use TV ads to spread the

Jewish groups in the United States are starting a television advertising 
campaign and will spend more than $A1.83 million ($3.36 billion) to promote 
Israel's side in its conflict with the Palestinians. 
The ads will run on cable news stations in 100 cities, with the message that 
Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, where Arabs, Jews and 
Christians enjoy freedom of religion and speech and the right to vote.
"This is really a back to basics campaign," said David Harris, executive 
director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), which is helping to fund the 
ads. "The essential element is that Israel is ... a kindred spirit of the United 
States." 
While the ads do not mention the violence in the Middle East, supporters say 
the goal of the campaign is to build political support for Israel.
However, the New York Post reports CNN is refusing to run ads 
promoting Israel as the Middle East's only democracy, saying

Israel and those U.N. Resolutions

George W. Bush is claiming, with chutzpah gleaned from his masters, that
the credibility of the United Nations is at stake in the confrontation
with Iraq over enforcement of U.N. resolutions. Not a peep from the
pious poodle in the White House about the sixty-eight UN Resolutions
violated by the Israelis for decades, including as recently as last
spring when the Zionists refused to allow a U.N. commission into Jenin
to investigate the possibility of war crimes having occurred there in
April.

The fiercely independent MSNBC cable news channel and the you make
the decision Fox cable news channel, have not made Israeli violations
of 68 UN resolutions -- in some cases for 20 or more years -- a rallying
cry of any kind.

The issue is not the credibility of the U.N., it is the prosecution of
a war with Iraq on behalf of Israeli security. The Sept. 17 issue of the
Wall Street Journal conservatively estimates that the Iraqi war will
cost US taxpayers between $200 and $300 billion dollars; even as elderly
Americans on fixed incomes live in poverty, unable to afford proper
medications and care; even as our environment, our schools, highways,
mass transit, and railroads deteriorate from lack of funds; even as the
quality of American life sinks so that the quality of Israeli life,
based on illegal occupation of Palestinian land (condemned by U.N.
resolutions), may improve.



Australian Jews win landmark race case
Toronto Globe and Mail, September 17, 2002

Australia's Jewish community won a landmark court case on Sept. 17
when a judge ruled a Web site that denied the Holocaust happened and
vilified Jewish people was illegal under racial discrimination laws.
Justice Catherine Branson ordered Frederick Toben to remove offensive
material from his Adelaide Institute Web site within the next seven days
and issue a written
apology to the president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry,
Jeremy Jones, who brought the legal action, and to pay the court's
costs.

Mr. Toben, said on his Web site he would appeal the ruling. Toben was
jailed in Germany in 1999 for seven months on charges of inciting hatred
through pamphlets. The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission,
which first ordered Mr. Toben to remove the material from his site two
years ago, said, This case confirms that, at least for Australian
sites, the Internet is subject to the same legal standards as other
forms of communications such as print, TV and radio. (End quote)

The subjects listed above were just the ones I came up with off the top of my head. There are perhaps a zillion more I could add to that list if I wanted to be here all day. By tomorrow, that list would be even longer.

The Internet is a fascinating, absorbing place to wander. It is a realm where nothing is taken at face value, a murky place shrouded in paranoia, fear, suspicion, hidden agendas and mistrust.

If the mainstream media whores havenât turned you into a quivering, submissive mass of flesh by now when you tune in to the â6 oâclock Daily Lies,â then the wonderful world of cyberspace is ready to take you and your mental stability right on. Once youâve sifted through all the information your brain cells can handle, youâre left to assimilate all this data and decide what is real and what is not. What is truth and what is a lie. Itâs not so easy, is it? Kinda like what you have to do when you watch Dan Rather â figure out if heâs blowing smoke up your butt again or if he actually believes what he's saying.

When youâve got the perfectly-hair-sprayed-talking-heads on the idiot box telling you one thing, and then youâve got some faceless stranger on the internet named âCretin1002â (a fictitious example) informing you of exactly the opposite â whom do you believe? More and more, Iâm finding that there IS more than dirt under those overturned rocks. Scratching even deeper beneath the surface information increasingly reveals more than just earthworms. We have all been sleeping in a bed of lies. And, as weâre all discovering, the sheets in that bed are real, real dirty, too.

Verbal Diarrhea

While the media whores regurgitate endless fabrications and outright distortions about September 11, and our gung-ho President Pretzel-Face continues his bang-up job of helping the Controllers destroy America, we are now warned by Pretzel-Face that we must disregard the word of conspiracy theorists. We are told to ignore them. Then, we are fed the same old song and dance. The âPretzelâ wants to keep this perpetual drumming of the war machine beating on and on. Forget the conspiracy theories. Listen to the âPretzelâ. That right there is a face you can trust, isnât it? Iâll give the benefit of the doubt to the conspiracists any day.

Moreover, as you listen to the verbal diarrhea being squirted by the media whores and the âWhite House Circus Sideshow Freaks,â can you see that all they are doing is reinforcing into your brain a notion of perpetual fear? They want the people to be afraid from day to day. They want you to deteriorate into a mental meltdown. President Pretzel is the pot calling the kettle black when he advises you to turn away from conspiracists. President Pretzel IS a conspiracist. So, take his advice and ignore him. He is lying to you while stoking the coals of a growing public paranoia. We donât need Internet conspiracy theories to make us have a meltdown. We have George Bush and John Ashcroft.

He's 70 years old and as I discovered when he came to visit me last month, a tall stringbean of a fellow, who knows more about oil than I will ever know, but who wanted me to teach him about the gold/oil nexus. Imagine that, 70 and still eager to learn. His Ph.D. is in Political Science and after a stint in journalism, covering the Middle East, he became the CIA's senior analyst at Langley during the Iran/Iraq war. At the Army War College, he and others studied Iraq's victory over Iran in minute detail, and he has written a number of books on how that feat was managed, with Iraq outnumbered 3-to-1 by the Iranians. If I were you, Mr. VP, I would invite him to kick things around with your staff, to give you the kind of overview you could never get by reaching out randomly to folks at the Pentagon or State.

âThe Role of the Media in Shaping Public Perception.â

With a PhD in Political Science, a background in journalism, and a current position as professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Army War College, Stephen Pelletiere brought his expertise to a discussion of the media at a 13 September 2001 Center lecture. He focused on press coverage of Iraq, Palestine, and the current situation following the 11 September plane hijackings and attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in the U.S. 

Pelletiere began by addressing the media campaign against Iraq following the Iran-Iraq war. The U.S. did not expect Iraq to win, and when it did, U.S. leaders were âdumbfounded.â As Iraq sought to ârebuild itselfâ after the war, the U.S. attempted to prevent this restructuring through a number of avenues, focusing on damaging Iraqâs âcredit worthiness.â Despite the accumulation of a large debt, Iraq âwas good for the moneyâ considering its oil resources. Still, in the spring of 1988, Iraq did not have the cash reserves necessary and wished to reschedule its debt payments. The media in the U.S. began running stories on Iraq, âthe tone of which was extremely hostile.â

âAll of the stories were slanted against Iraq,â which by itself is suspicious. In addition, some of the stories were simply âphony,â such as the report that 80,000 to 100,000 Kurds were gassed to death by Iraq. âYou canât kill that many people using gas, in a concentrated period, in terrain such as exists in northern Iraq.â Irrational stories do appear in the media on occasion, but not usually so extensively in the established press. It seemed to Pelletiere that âthis was a campaign.â At the time, Congress was debating sanctions on Iraq and may have been trying to prepare the public. When sanctions were eventually declared, Iraq could no longer reschedule its debts.

Moving to the issue of how the media has covered Israel and Palestine, Pelletiere explained that Israelâs current military activity in the Occupied Territories is âcoming dangerously close to ethnic cleansing.â Nonetheless, the press presents the conflict as relatively balanced and argues that both sides are equally responsible for the violence. Pelletiere takes a different approach. He explained that at the Camp David negotiations, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak offered a deal âthat was no deal at all.â Barak hoped the Palestinians would accept it and be âsaddled with an entity that was not viable,â a so-called state that would fall apart. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat refused. âThe pro-Israeli forces â¦ had to find a way of retreating from the exposed position they found themselves in, because in the process of setting Arafat up, â¦ they had dignified both him and his movement by appearing to take the idea of Palestinian statehood seriously.â They choose to âcriminalizeâ the Palestinians. One woman is totally hidden from the public; the other

The role of woman is at the heart of any culture. 
Apart from stealing Arab oil, the impending war in the Middle East is 
about stripping Arabs of their religion and culture, exchanging the

I am not an expert on the condition of Muslim women 
and I love feminine beauty too much to advocate the burka here. But I am 
defending some of the values that the burka represents for me. 
 
For me, the burka represents a woman's consecration to 
her husband and family. Only they see her. 
 
It affirms the privacy, exclusivity and importance of 
the domestic sphere. 
 
The Muslim woman's focus is her home, the "nest" where 
her children are born and reared. She is the "home" maker, the taproot 
that sustains the spiritual life of the family, nurturing and training 
her children, providing refuge and support to her husband. 
 
In contrast, the bikinied American beauty queen struts 
practically naked in front of millions on TV. A feminist, she belongs to 
herself. In practice, paradoxically, she is public property. She belongs 
to no one and everyone. She shops her body to the highest bidder. She is 
auctioning herself all of the time. 
 
In America, the cultural measure of a woman's value is 
her sex appeal. (As this asset depreciates quickly, she is neurotically 
obsessed with appearance and plagued by weight problems.) 
 
As an adolescent, her role model is Britney Spears, a 
singer whose act approximates a strip tease. From Britney, she learns 
that she will be loved only if she gives sex. Thus, she learns to "hook 
up" rather than to demand patient courtship and true love. As a result, 
dozens of males know her before her husband does. She loses her 
innocence, which is a part of her charm. She becomes hardened and 
calculating. Unable to love, she is unfit to receive her husband's 
seed. 
 
The feminine personality is founded on the emotional 
relationship between mother and baby. It is based on nurturing and 
self-sacrifice. Masculine nature is founded on the relationship between 
hunter and prey. It is based on aggression and reason. 
 
Feminism teaches woman that feminine nature has 
resulted in "oppression" and that she should convert to male behavior 
instead. The result: a confused and aggressive woman with a large chip 
on her shoulder, unfit to become a wife or mother. 
 
This, of course, is the goal of the social engineers 
at the NWO: undermine sexual identity and destroy the family, create 
social and personal dysfunction, and reduce population. (See

new world," women are not supposed to be nest makers, or progenitors of

said that Iranian women and youth were restive under the rule of the 
Mullahs. He implied that the US would soon liberate them. To Britney 
Spears? To low-rise "see-my-thong" pants? To the mutual masturbation 
that passes for sexuality in America? 
 
Parenthood is the pinnacle of human development. It is 
the stage when we finally graduate from self-indulgence and become God's 
surrogates: creating and nurturing new life. The New World Order does 
not want us to reach this level of maturity. Pornography is the 
replacement for marriage. We are to remain stunted: single, sex-starved 
and self-obsessed. 
 
We are not meant to have a permanent "private" life. 
We are to remain lonely and isolated, dependent on consumer products for 
our identity, in a state of perpetual courtship.

the Forgotten Massacres

Every time I open my closet door I see them. The black Talbots sandals I wore when I revisited the wretched Palestinian refugee camps known as Sabra and Shatila. Although I've cleaned them, for some reason the sandals seem to be coated with a film of dust and dirt which simply will not go away.

Over the years dirt from Sabra and Shatila has clung just as tenaciously to Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon. As some -- but probably not many -- Americans may remember, twenty years ago this month the twin camps in southern Beirut were the scene of an infamous massacre carried out by Lebanese militiamen operating under Israel's direct control. The massacre was an exceptionally tragic denouement to Israel's 1982 invasion of its neighbor to the north, which Israel carried out with American approval partly in the hope of establishing a Lebanese government friendly to its interests.

During Lebanon's earlier civil war, Israel had begun viewing the right-wing Christian Phalange militia as a natural ally. (In a strange way the relationship reminds me of Israel's present relationship with the Christian right in this country in that both parties are trying to use the other for their own ends in an alliance which may in fact be extremely short-lived.) In the late 1970s, both Israel and the Phalangists saw the Palestinians as an enemy -- Israel because of the obvious PLO threat and the Christians because the Palestinian refugees had the potential for upsetting the country's delicate Christian-Muslim communal balance. At the end of Israel's Lebanon campaign it looked for a very short while like the Phalangist leader Bashir Gemeyal, Israel's hand-picked candidate, would indeed become the new Lebanese president. This plan was thwarted, however, after Gemeyal was assassinated in a powerful bomb blast shortly before assuming office.

Israel immediately reinvaded West Beirut and secretly began making preparations to allow Lebanese militiamen to enter the refugee camps in search of "terrorists." In a two-day orgy of bloodshed which subsequently shocked and sickened the world, Israel's allies murdered between 1,000 and ",000 unarmed Palestinian refugees and impoverished Lebanese while torturing, raping and terrorizing countless others. The death toll may in fact be as high or higher than that of the September 11 attacks on America. No one will ever be able to say for sure because figures for the number killed in the massacre vary wildly.

An Israeli investigative commission eventually found Sharon, who was Israel's defense minister at the time, "personally responsible" for the slaughter. As a result, many people, including many Israelis, predicted that Sharon would never become Israel's prime minister. Today, however, the phrase that comes to mind is "never say never."

Although Sharon has been officially rehabilitated, like every politician he must of necessity be concerned to some degree about his image. In light of the ironfisted tactics he has been using in the occupied territories since assuming the Israeli premiership, the last thing the always controversial Sharon has needed of late was a new wave of publicity relating to his involvement in the massacre.

Interest in the twenty-year-old atrocities was rekindled nonetheless, at least in Europe, after a court case was brought last year against Sharon in Belgium charging him with war crimes. The case received additional attention in January after Elie Hobeika, a Lebanese warlord involved in the massacre, was assassinated in Beirut. Shortly before his death Hobeika had announced that he would go to Belgium to testify against Sharon. Speculation is that Hobeika may have wanted to clear his name by trying to pin a large portion of blame on another Israeli proxy force long implicated in the massacre -- the South Lebanon Army of Major Saad Haddad.

Also, it is worth nothing that Hobeika isn't the only Lebanese Forces militia leader to have recently met with an untimely end: Since the first of the year two of Hobeika's comrades, who may have had connections to the case, were assassinated or died under mysterious circumstances.

In a surprise move a Belgian appeals court dismissed the case in June on grounds that Sharon could not be prosecuted because he was not residing in Belgium. Lawyers for the Palestinian survivors and relatives say they are appealing the case to the Belgian Supreme Court while Belgian legislators have been busily redrafting the existing law to specify, among other things, that the accused, including sitting heads of government, does not have to be in the country to be prosecuted.

When it comes to the massacres and to Israel's 1982 Lebanon invasion, people in this country sometimes say, "Oh yeah, I remember hearing something about that. I just can't remember what." But you can't blame the average American for not

Yet Another Bush Doctrine

He said it and we must obey! "We (America) want the United Nations to be effective and respected and successful. We want (the) its resolutions to be enforced." This is the third of Dubya's new foreign policy doctrines, each a furtherance of his unilateral approach to world domination.

Following September 11, the fledging President, whose foreign policy initiatives up to that date had been marked by retreat from international and global agreements in favor of isolationism, announced a declaration of war against the forces of evil that reside in the world. This Manichean perception of the world fit logically into his Puritan fundamentalist view that America represents the forces of good fighting against the forces of evil, the same America that had been directed to this new land by the Almighty and blessed with truth and righteousness. "You are with us or against us," he declared on September 20th. The authorities in power in 1636, the Puritan Divines, determined who was good and who was evil because they believed they were God's anointed. They determined that the Natives were "salvages" working for Satan and that gave them the right to exterminate the Pequot tribe in 1637, and they praised God for permitting it and for making the slaughter so thorough! So today we have a President who believes that he is born-again in Christ and can interpret His word as to who is good and who is evil.

Unfortunately, since terrorists cannot be defined as rulers of nation states as defined by the United States, he provided to the world's leaders an avenue of justification for their acts of occupation and slaughter of those opposed to their regimes or their desires. We have witnessed this in Russia's justification of the slaughter of the Chechnyans, Melosovic's defense that he was only subduing "terrorists" in his ethnic cleansing of the Muslims in Bosnia, Pakistan's and India's justification of their respective attacks against each other in Kashmir, and in Israel's defense of its occupation of Arab territory. The first Bush doctrine has opened the door for anarchy throughout the world as leader after leader justifies his actions against his enemies as a "war against terrorists."

But our President didn't stop there. He annunciated his second doctrine at the West Point military academy: the right of America to determine and execute "pre-emptive attacks" against perceived enemies. This doctrine effectively undermines international law and makes "irrelevant," to use a Sharon operative word, the United Nations. But it is worse than that. It also undermines the basic premises that have determined how the United States declares war: a determination that the United States has been attacked before it attacks. It also shifts responsibility for determination of such action from the Congress to the Executive branch if the reality of "pre-emptive" strike is to be effective. The second Bush doctrine augments the first by giving those in power another "right" to act without evidence of perceived intention or determination of "evil" by presentation of evidence before a court or a congressional or representational body.

Now we have Dubya's third doctrine: resolutions of the United Nations must be enforced; at least that is how Dubya defended his desire to bring about "regime change" in Iraq when he addressed the UN on the 12th. On the surface this would seem to be a desirable goal for international order. Unfortunately, neither Bush nor his administration mean what they say. If they did, they would apply the same doctrine to Israel. Consider the discrepancies: Iraq has broken UN resolutions since 1991 according to the President; Israel has broken UN resolutions since 1948. Bush claims that Saddam has defied the UN and thus " is a threat to UN authority and to peace." He asks this question as he presents his arguments before the UN delegates: "Are UN resolutions to be honored and enforced or cast aside without consequence?" Will the UN become irrelevant if its resolutions are not obeyed? The answer applies, of course, only to Iraq. It is the only argument he could make at the UN.

He could not claim that the United States has authority to "go it
alone" against his perceived "evildoer." He could not use the fabrication that Iraq, with only a third of its military in tact following the other Iraqi war and hobbled with a population that has suffered ten years of deprivation caused by the US imposed sanctions, could pose a threat to the US unless they were to hand-deliver a weapon across 7,000 miles. So he resorts to this doctrine trusting, I suspect, that no one would notice that Israel has defied over 55 UN resolutions since 1967 and others prior to that reaching back to 1948. Ethnic Cleansing by Starvation

A US-financed assessment of the overall malnutrition level among
Palestinian children, released this month by the US Agency for
International Development (USAID), found that one in five Palestinian
children under the age of five now suffers from chronic or acute
malnutrition. This astonishing statistic is on par with impoverished
nations such as Chad and Nigeria, and actually surpasses rates of
child malnutrition in Somalia and Bangladesh. Such figures, the
report noted, are considered an emergency by most humanitarians and
public health officials. The report points to Israeli-imposed
closures and sieges of major civilian centers as the direct and
primary cause.

We typically think of famines as being caused by natural disasters
(droughts, overgrazing) or by crises that result in the displacement
of large populations from their lands (wars, ethnic strife). The
situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, however, is a
startling aberration since it is clearly a man-made disaster intended
to specifically target whole civilian populations. Most importantly,
it can easily and immediately be reversed.

Today, Israeli military sieges are literally imprisoning families
within their homes for days at a time. People cannot leave their
homes to work, buy food, go to the doctor, or send their children to
school. Military checkpoints and roadblocks are restricting commerce
and the transport of food supplies. Workers cannot travel between
Palestinian towns, and farmers and manufacturers are unable to
deliver their goods to shops and markets. People have exhausted the
money they can draw on from relatives and connections on the outside.

The USAID report also revealed that about one quarter of West Bank
Palestinians have had to sell personal possessions to put food on the
table. The World Bank recently determined that as many as 62 percent
of Palestinian families are now living on less than two dollars a
day. As a result of these obstacles, increasing numbers of families
are skipping meals or reducing their food intake because eventually
they run out of money and assets to sell.

Even before the current Israeli re-occupation which began on June 20,
many Palestinians relied on aid from the Palestinian Authority and
the UN World Food Program (UNWFP). With its ministries and
institutions flattened, the PA can no longer serve in this role, and
the UNWFP has recently announced an emergency operation to cope with
what they call dramatically deteriorating living conditions in the
Palestinian Territories.

But how can the slow starvation of a whole population be stopped when
that very starvation is being altogether denied by the Israeli
government and ignored by the US Administration? Major General Amos
Gilad, Israel's coordinator of government affairs in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip, was hardly ruffled by the USAID findings. In fact, he
asserted that hunger is when people have swollen bellies and fall
over dead. There is no hunger yet.

Discovering that dismissive denial of facts is not working, the
Israeli authorities are now moving to soften criticism with
much-hyped symbolic gestures. Israel recently announced its intention
to release about seven percent of the 600 million dollars in
Palestinian tax revenue it has seized since the start of the
Intifada, as well as its intention to reissue work permits for
Palestinians to cross from the West Bank and Gaza to their jobs
inside Israel.

These measures, however, are hardly sufficient. Much more needs to be
done. It is

'Disastrous' GM crops have cost US economy £8bn, study claims

The introduction of genetically modified crops in North America has
been an economic disaster, the Soil Association claimed
yesterday.

A report on the North American market drawn up by the association,
which supports organic farming, said the new crops had cost the
United States economy £8bn since 1999. The costs were said to
have been caused by contamination of crops, subsidies paid to
compensate for low prices and lost trade from manufacturers in
Europe that refused GM products  and the complete recall of one
product.

Three quarters of the world's GM food is grown in the US and
Canada, principally soya and corn. The report's findings were based
on interviews with academics, advisers and analysts in North
America as well as organic and conventional farmers in the US.
The British Government was accused, meanwhile, of failing
sufficently to monitor trials of GM crops in Britain, after it accepted a
report comprising just two sentences for year-long trials at 28 sites.

Friends of the Earth said it had written to Margaret Beckett, the
Secretary of State for the Department of Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs, about the biotech industry monitoring reports that have
been accepted by her department. The pressure group said it had
been advised that the reports did not meet legal requirements. It
consulted lawyers after seeing a copy of the monitoring report
submitted by Aventis CropScience Ltd (now Bayer CropScience)
about the winter oilseed rape farm scale trials in 2000-01.

The two-sentence report was meant to cover developments at 28
different farm sites over an entire season. The group said that
information on the performance of GM crops might be being
overlooked.

CRAZY MONEY?

SEPTEMBER 18. Neutron Jack Welch is now renouncing his retirement perks, the ones contained in his golden parachute. His former company, GE, is moving along without him, and hopes to avoid any spillover from Jackâs ongoing messy divorce.

Makes me wonder whether Jackâs renunciation of millions from GE is somehow tied in with his desire to pay out much less to his wife. But thatâs another storyâ¦

Checking up a little on GE, I discovered, much to my amazement, that this mega-corp makes 40 PERCENT of its total earnings from one subsidiary, called GE Capital Corp. A financial services company. It buys up mortgages, among other activities.

It produces no refrigerators or toasters or tanks. GE Capital has just been split into four pieces, supposedly for the purpose of making its earnings statements more transparent to the Wall Street pros, who are edgy about corporationsâ financial reporting in the current Enron-WorldCom-Global Crossing situation.

This is just a tip at the moment, but I smell something fishy here. Where exactly does GE Capital get its money from, the money it uses to buy up mortgages? And why has it been so successful versus other companies in the same line of work? Iâve been told that GE Capital is a veritable tiger on the mortgage-buying front. It just keeps on winning.

Remember, Enron was really making a huge chunk of its earnings NOT from the sale of energy or energy infrastructure, but from the sale of energy futures. It was phasing over to the financial services and brokering areas. Ditto for GE.

Whenever a huge corporation eases way off on actually producing THINGS and goes toward selling and buying commercial paper (e.g., mortgages) and futures and the like, itâs a signal to investigate.

Let me put it this way: Suppose a huge international car builder told you it was no longer selling automobiles, it was now selling the RIGHT to buy, at some future time, these vehicles. And before that future date arrived, you could turn around and sell your purchased right to the car to someone else. Wouldnât that make you a little edgy? You donât buy a car or even a stake in the company, you SPECULATE by buying the right to buy.

âWeâre not really a builder anymore, weâre a bankâwell, not a bank exactlyâmore like a commodity broker. Weâve found we make more money if we sell the right to buy something rather than the something itself.â

Speaking of banks, here is a clue to another very crazy money game.

For years, people have accepted reports that banks often make extremely stupid loans. For example, they lend billions to corporations that are already foundering and desperately need back-up cash.

âOh those banks. They never really investigate their borrowersâ financial statements. What morons.â

I think not. This is sometimes an insidersâ insidious tactic. The bank expects and wants the corporate borrower to go further into red ink. The bank wants the company to fail, to head into bankruptcy. Why? Because the bank is really a front for much quieter and more powerful interests behind the scenesâand those interests want to buy up the failing corporation and take it over. Thatâs right.

Consider this as an aspect in what has been happening to Enron, Global Crossing, WorldCom, Qwest, and others.

Here is a nearly perfect analogy. IMF, a mega-bank, lends a country billions to pay off its prior debts to IMF. IMF KNOWS that country (e.g., Argentina) is going to go much further into the red. Thatâs the whole idea. Because, vultures are waiting in the wings, waiting to take over all the really important industries in that desperately wobbling nation. And when the nation is in a completely untenable situation, vis-Ã -vis its national debt, it will accede to any imposed IMF orders. Orders, for example, to sell off its prime utilities and industries to foreign investors.

In the coming months and years, will we be able to see who is really re-structuring and taking over the Enrons? Donât count on it. Several levels of fronts and cutouts can hide the real new owners. But, for example, keep your eye on a multi-billion-dollar outfit called the Carlyle Group.

Bush the Elder is a shill, in Asia, for Carlyle, and a whole host of former US government biggies is on board.

PEPPER ON MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

SEPTEMBER 18. Monday Night Football was suddenly interrupted when the whole Philadelphia Eagles team was led out on to the field by coach Andy Reid. Players were pawing at their eyes and covering their faces. The game stopped.

The TV announcers were at a loss to explain what happened. They didnât want to say the T word, but they finally did. Terrorism. They were careful to indicate that this wasnât even a speculation on their part, but that, these days, the thought would occur to people.

Corruption, like carriers of the West Nile Virus, has no conscience. It is ruthless and greedy. The Inslaw affair is also well documented in Seeds of Fire: China and the Story Behind the Attack on America, by Gordon Thomas. It reveals some of the nature of our current government and its intentions.

In March 1982 the Washington, D.C.-based INSLAW company, owned by Bill and Nancy Hamilton, won a $10-million, three-year contract with the Justice Department, which planned to install the PROMIS software, developed by Bill Hamilton, in the 22 largest U.S. attorneysâ offices and a word-processor version in 72 others. 

In the meantime, however, Dr. Earl Brian, a longtime crony of then-Attorney General Edwin Meese, began using his clout to interfere with the Hamiltonâs contract in order to win the contract for a company that he owned after the Hamiltons refused Brianâs offer to purchase INSLAW. Brian, who had wide-ranging international contacts, was widely believed to be a longtime asset of the CIA. 

In early 1983 the Justice Department arranged with the Hamiltons to demonstrate PROMIS to an Israeli who called himself âDr. Ben Orrâ who said he represented the Israeli Ministry of Justice. âBen Orrâ said he was most impressed with PROMIS, but, to the Hamiltonsâ surprise, he never bought the product. 

It was only later the Hamiltons learned why: Brian had already illicitly provided the software to LEKEM, an Israeli Defense Force intelligence unit headed by Mossad operative Rafael Eitan. 

Eitan, it turns out, was not only the âDr. Ben Orrâ who had visited the Hamiltons, but he was also the Mossad official directing the U.S.-based Jonathan Pollard spy ring, and a top ally of Ariel Sharon. 

Eitanâs LEKEM operations had been funded by a series of off-shore corporations in the Bahamas set in place by Burns and Summit, the law firm of Deputy Attorney General Arnold Burns, a key player in the Justice Departmentâs campaign to liquidate INSLAW and a prime mover behind the ouster of federal Judge George Bason (see accompanying story) and the appointment of S. Martin Teel to succeed him. 

Former Israeli intelligence operative Ari Ben-Menashe has said that PROMIS was perfect software for use by Israeli intelligence in tracking the Palestinian and political dissidents critical of Israel. 

âPROMIS was a very big thing for us guys, a very, very big thing,â Ben-Menashe said. âIt was probably the most important issue of the 1980s because it just changed the whole intelligence outlook. The whole form of intelligence collection changed.â 

All of this was happening behind the scenes and unbeknownst, at that time, to the Hamiltons. How ever, with their software totally looted and distributed internationallyâthe Hamiltons found that the Justice Department was withholding more than $7 million in payments due on the contract, forcing INSLAW into insolvency. Then, in 1984, Justice abruptly canceled the contract. 

In 1985, facing bankruptcy and fighting off hostile takeover attempts by allies of Earl Brian, the Hamiltons sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in federal court in Washington and also sued the Justice Department for the losses they had suffered. 

The Justice Departmentâs conspiracy against INSLAW was so patently outrageous that in 1988 federal bankruptcy court Judge George Bason Jr. ruled for the Hamiltons and against Justice. Bason concluded the Justice Department had deliberately tried to bankrupt INSLAW so that they would be able to grab control of the software and not pay the Hamiltons.
