After having announced the attributes and the names of the new European Commissioners on 12 August 2004, José Manuel Barroso met his team on the 20 August 2004 in Brussels for the first time. The new commissioners will then be submitted to hearings on September 27, by the European Parliament, who shall vote at the end October on the new Commission, before it officially takes over on November 1st 2004.
The "European popular group" showed its satisfaction the day after the announcement of the nominations. Its president Potterin commented positively on the Lisbon strategy, in other words the strenghtening of European competitiveness. This will be the central aim of Günter Verheugen. [Bilderberg], who will report directly to Barroso, himself presiding over the group in charge of this strategy.
Verheugen declared that he will be in charge of the group of commissioners responsible for European economic coordination and this will give him a strong position. The subject is essentially depending on the individual member states.
Between the nations in Europe and the EEC, we will find M. Verheugen. The president of the "democrat group", M. Graham Watson greeted the 'inspired' choices and the 'imaginative' thoughts of the future president of the commission. He was delighted at the presence of one third women in the commission and the absence of super commissioners.
The actual commissioners refuse to give their public ideas about the decision of Mr Barroso. One of them observed privately, that the former Portuguese prime minister rewarded his friends, who were with him on the side of the American intervention in Iraq. So, M. Mandelson (trade/commerce), Italy with Rocco Bottiglione (justice liberty security), Denmark with Marianne Fisher Boel (agriculture), Poland with Hubner (regional policy), Spain with Joaquin Almounia (economical and financial affairs) have got more powerful commission posts than France ad even Germany, if we judge limited the powers of M.Verheugen.
The preeminence of the liberals is also underlined with Peter Mendelson, says a senior civil servant of the commission. Trade policy runs a risk of being more liberal and Atlantic. The British commissioner, he added, can attempt to try again to suggest the idea of a free trade zone upon the Atlantic, against the which Pascal Lamy [Bilderberg] fought.
The Irish Charlie McCreevy and her collegue in charge of the concurrence, the Dutch Kroes Smit, are two ultra liberals in charge of two key posts, should provoke reservations from our point of view in regard with their past performance.

  To defend the country against germ warfare, the Center for Disease 
  Control (CDC) is stepping up preventive measures and developing emergency 
  response strategies, CDC officials said yesterday. 
  "The anti-terrorism commission of the Executive Yuan is coordinating 
  intelligence, financial, economic and judicial mechanisms to fend off any 
  attack of biological agents," Chiu Chan-hsien (ªô®i½å), director of the 
  CDC's Division of Emerging Infectious Diseases said at the Asian Pacific 
  Intercity Symposium on Anti-Bioterrorism, which was convened jointly by 
  the CDC and the Taipei City Government's Department of Health. 
  According to Chiu, the draft anti-terrorism law has passed the first 
  review in the Legislative Yuan and is high on the list for a second review 
  next year. The law, once ratified, will authorize an anti-terrorism team 
  and reinforce the legal basis for a full-scale mobilization in the event 
  of an attack. 
  Chiu also said that the CDC has proposed a four-year budget to finance 
  staff training and the purchase of vaccines, antibiotics and medical 
  facilities. The amount for the first year budget totals about NT$1.4 
  billion, Chiu said. 
  Apart from the draft anti-terrorism law and budget plan, the CDC has 
  organized the National Biological Pathogens Disaster Response System as 
  the backbone of the nation's biosecurity. 
  Despite doubts on whether the nation will be threatened by bioterror, 
  officials contended that they cannot afford to be complacent. 
  "Taiwan has yet to experience acts of biological terrorism," said 
  Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (°¨­^¤E) in his opening speech. 
  "However, we cannot use this as an excuse to avoid preparation and study 
  in bioterrorism prevention." 
  "We were greatly shocked by the senseless attack on the World Trade 
  Center on Sept. 11, 2001, in which so many innocent lives were lost," Ma 
  said. "Terrorists usually aim to harm soft targets that are unable to 
  fight back, such as civilian infrastructure and local governments, 
  institutions and businesses." 
  The city government worries that widespread dissemination of chemical 
  and biological information has made it easier for determined individuals 
  to develop biological weapons in underground laboratories. Such weapons 
  could be used covertly, and would cause mass casualties in a densely 
  populated city like Taipei. 
  "There are over 2.6 million residents in Taipei City, and if you 
  include individuals who live in suburbs and commute to Taipei for work, 
  over a million people are in the city on any given day," Chang Hang 
  (±iÒ²), the Commissioner of Taipei City Government's Department of Health, 
  said. 
  "In an era of convenient mass transit systems, where we come into 
  frequent contact with so many others, it is difficult to prevent and 
  protect against biological strikes," Chang said. Foreign experts with 
  experience fighting anthrax, smallpox, and other biological agents 
  encouraged the country to strengthen its defense against biological 
  attacks, although Taipei is not likely a terrorist target. 
  "Rather than spending time trying to predict the unpredictable, we 
  suggest that the government prepare for the worst," said A. Thomas Waytes, 
  vice president of medical and scientific affairs of BioPort, under the US 
  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 
  Choo Wee Jin, chairman of geriatric medicine at Singapore's Tan Tock 
  Seng Hospital in Singapore, said a terrorist attack on his country is 
  inevitable. "Our government's assumption is that an attack will occur 
  sooner or later, given the unstable international situation and our close 
  ties with the US." 
  Drawing on expertise from the US and Singapore, the CDC said that they 
  have narrowed down possible biological agents to four kinds: smallpox, 
  anthrax, plague, and botulism. According to Chiu, the CDC has stockpiled 
  vaccines for smallpox and antibiotics for anthrax. Chiu also confirmed 
  that in drills, local health bureaus proved capable of coordinating and 
  reporting all available medical resources to the CDC within two hours.

September 5, 2004 - DAN Jones starts to cry. He’s in the middle of Union
Square in New York City and he’s trying to explain how his children felt
when they lost their favourite uncle – his brother-in-law – on September 11,
2001. Jones is one of the founders of the September 11 Families for Peaceful
Tomorrows organisation and it’s been a rough week for him.
His brother-in-law, he feels, has been wrapped in the Stars And Stripes and
his death expropriated by the Republican Party, which has come to town just
days before the third anniversary of the attacks on America for its
pre-election convention.

The decision to hold the convention just a few blocks from the site where
nearly 3000 people died in the World Trade Centre attacks has been condemned
by many opponents of the Republican Party as a gross exploitation of America
’s suffering. Each day of the convention has invoked the memory of 9/11 as a
reason to “never forget and never forgive”; each day delegates have called
on September 11 as a reason to justify war.

If the convention and the memory of his family’s loss has made this a
harrowing week emotionally for Jones, then it’s also been a hard few days
for him physically too. He’s just completed the mammoth task of dragging a
5000lb tombstone – inscribed with the words “to the unknown civilians killed
in war” – from Boston to New York in time for the convention. The
 “Stonewalk” saw some 500 people, led by Jones, pulling this hulk of granite
along the same route that the planes which crashed into the twin towers took
when they were taken over by the 9/11 hijackers.

The Tombstone now takes centre stage in Union Square. This usually bohemian,
bustling little patch of ground has now been turned into a shrine for all
those who have died since 9/11. Surrounding the tombstone are 978 pairs of
boots – a set for every soldier who has died in Iraq. Hundreds of kids’
shoes and women’s shoes and the shoes of men are there as well – each pair
representing a dead Iraqi. The names of all those who have died during the
invasion and occupation of Iraq are being read out as Jones tries to
describe the pain and anger his family has felt – pain at losing his
children’s uncle, Bill Kelly, and anger at the Bush administration for using
their suffering, as they see it, as an excuse for war across the globe.

Bill Kelly was at a breakfast meeting at the Windows on the World restaurant
at the World Trade Centre when the first plane struck. His body was never
found. “My children lost their favourite uncle,” says Jones, a 39-year-old
social worker in the New York school system. “We didn’t want to see any
other family going through what we did. My children are still very afraid.
The shock and horror hasn’t left them. No other children anywhere in the
world should go through what they went through. The city in which they live
saw planes crashing into buildings and the buildings falling down.

“We knew that if our country waged war that other families would be put in
the same position that our family was put in – children would lose uncles
and parents, people would lose their brothers and sisters, parents would
lose their children.

“We wanted justice, not war. War is no way to get justice. It took a long
time for the man who blew up the plane over Lockerbie to come to justice,
but it happened in the end. We wanted this pursued as a crime, not to be
considered as an act of war. The war in Afghanistan has not brought those
who plotted my brother-in-law’s murder to justice. And the war in Iraq has
certainly not served that purpose either.”

Steve Patterson, 43, is a graphics artist who works at home in a 14th-floor apartment in Pentagon City. While watching events unfold on TV he saw a silver commuter jet fly past his window about 150 yards away, approaching from the west about 20 feet off the ground,
He said it appeared to him that a commuter jet which appeared to hold about eight to 12 people, headed straight for the Pentagon but was flying as if coming in for a landing on a nonexistent runway.
The plane, which sounded like the high-pitched squeal of a fighter jet, flew over Arlington cemetery so low that he thought it was going to land on I-395.

WASHINGTON-Although it's been eight months since last September's terrorist attacks, for many of the medical personnel on duty that "horrific day" at the Pentagon, the memory of their experience is "permanently etched" in their minds, according to Maryann Ramos, MPH, an occupational health certified physician assistant for the Pentagon's Civilian Employees Health Service (CEHS).
 Ramos was the physician assistant pictured comforting another Pentagon worker on Sept. 11 in a prominent cover photo in the January issue of U.S. MEDICINE. Taken by an Army photographer, the photo did not carry the names of the pair at the time, but fortunately a colleague of Ramos's at the Pentagon later recognized her when she saw a copy of the newspaper. The worker informed Ramos, who then contacted U.S. MEDICINE and tracked down the man in the photo whom she helped that day. "I'd like to find out his name and shake his hand," she wrote in an email to U.S. MEDICINE in January.
 The man in the photo turned out to be Maj. Lincoln Leibner, USA, a communications officer for the secretary of defense. Both of them, as well as some of Ramos's other Pentagon medical colleagues who helped treat the wounded on Sept. 11, generously agreed to be interviewed by U.S. MEDICINE in early February to share their experiences. What follows are the names and personal stories behind the photo, what led up to it and the events that followed.

 When The Plane Struck
Ramos was inside the Pentagon halls walking toward the metro station when the plane struck the west side of the building last Sept. 11 at about 9:40 a.m. "I felt the building shake and it felt like something fell on us," she said. "I went down to the metro, to the lowest level. I just missed the train."
 Had Ramos arrived seconds earlier and caught the train, her experience that day would have been completely different. "The station master evacuated us from the metro," she said. "He said, 'Just go, go up.' Nobody told us anything. I had just seen the planes [that hit the World Trade Center] on CNN. When the first hit I thought it could have been an accident. When I saw the second, I thought, 'This is very bad.' "
 Ramos emerged from the subway on the southeastern side of the Pentagon to see black smoke billowing out into the sky. She walked toward its source, outside around the Pentagon's wall until she was stopped by security guards. "They wouldn't let me go that way," she said. "I had no white coat, only my badge and purse."
 Wanting to reach what she thought at the time was a "bomb site," Ramos convinced guards she was a physician assistant desiring to help with the wounded. "They let me go through," she said.
 Ramos arrived on the crash scene to find several trucks, a mix of physicians, defense personnel and civilians aiding in the rescue and care of victims. The only two people she recognized were Lt. Antonia Lopez, a physician assistant and women's policy deputy for the Navy, and Didi Nguyen, an RN and hearing conservation program manager for CEHS, who were both working in the nearby Navy Annex that day and came over to help after the explosion.
 "The interesting thing was that they were all strangers helping people, except for those two," Ramos said. "The rest of the [CEHS] clinic [based in the lower north side of the Pentagon] went out the north side. When they came back, they went into the center court [to care for victims who made it outside that way]. Smoke was coming from the north side and over the Pentagon into the five acres in the middle."
 Ramos said she went to the first person she saw dressed in a white medical uniform. "I think it was one of the Virginia docs," said Ramos. "I said, 'I'm here to help. I'm a PA.' "
 As victims staggered from the building, Ramos couldn't tell what had wrought the destruction. There were no signs of a plane. "All I could see was a giant hole in the building," she said. "I thought it was a Piper cub [small plane]. I found a couple little, thin pieces of twisted aluminum, that's all, on the ground. I gave it to the FBI. There were lots of flames at the top, a black hole and smoke."
 It was at about that point that Ramos spotted Maj. Leibner, who was working feverishly to help remove victims from the building. "He was coming out," Ramos said. "Police let us meet them half way. He went in several times to get people out."
 When Maj. Leibner seemed to stumble away finally, Ramos went to treat him. "I thought he was dazed," she said. "I checked his mouth and he had swallowed a lot of hot air. His whole mouth and throat were red. He was coughing. He couldn't get his breath. I got a small tank of oxygen. In the photo I was getting him to one spot so he wouldn't faint. I put his oxygen mask over his mouth."

US warplanes spearheaded a massive two-pronged assault to crush a Shiite
Muslim uprising in Iraq's city of Najaf.

Jets screeched overhead as massive explosions and tank and machine-gun fire
boomed through the city and smoke engulfed its historic centre, home to the
Imam Ali shrine, revered by Shiites all over the world.

Thousands of US forces, backed by Iraqi police and national guard, mounted a
pincer movement to trap Moqtada Sadr's fighters in the heart of the city,
before going on to raid the militia leader's empty home.

Iraqi and US troops sealed approaches to the mausoleum, as hundreds of
terrified residents, urged on by attacking forces and the city's mosques,
fled through the dusty streets.

"Leave the city. Help coalition forces and do not fire at them," one
announcement instructed in Arabic. "We are here to liberate the city."

Armed militiamen fanned out into the deserted plaza outside the shrine as
mosques urged the Mehdi Army to defy the onslaught and defend the city.

By dusk, one militiamen had been killed and 25 wounded, while one civilian
was killed and three others injured, said the clinic inside the shrine.

The government said the joint offensive would continue, demanded the Mehdi
Army evacuate the holy shrine but pledged US forces would not be allowed to
enter the sacred mausoleum.

"The operations are continuing... and will continue until the militia is
forced out or they surrender," Defence Minister Hazem al-Shalan told a press
conference in Baghdad.

In Najaf, the militia, still in control of the area around the shrine, vowed
to fight until the bitter end.

"We are ready to fight until the last drop of blood if this is what the
Americans want," said Sheikh Ali al-Sumeisim.

Various efforts were underway to defuse the standoff. The government's
pointman on security, Muwafaq al-Rubaie, headed to Najaf in a bid to meet
with Sadr and end the assault.

The Najaf office of Iraq's revered Shiite Muslim spiritual leader Grand
Ayatollah Ali Sistani also said it was working with all sides for peace.

Envoy Hussein al-Shahrastani said that if Sistani had predicted the scale of
the crisis he would never have left for medical treatment in Britain.

"We ask all sides to immediately renounce arms to save Muslim blood and the
sanctity of the city," he said.

But Iraq's top Sunni Muslim body warned the security forces against
supporting the US military.

Early on Thursday, Najaf deputy governor Jawdat Kadam Najem al-Kuraishi and
half of the 30-member provincial council resigned in protest against US
"terrorist operations" and the "hasty US invasion" of Najaf.

Twenty-four hours of nationwide fighting, mostly in the Shiite south and
Sadr's Baghdad stronghold, has claimed 165 lives and wounded 594, the health
ministry said.

In Baghdad's district of Kadhimiyah and the British-patrolled southern oil
city of Basra, thousands of people protested against US attacks on holy
cities, held aloft pictures of Sadr and denounced Prime Minister Iyad
Allawi.

A British soldier was later killed in the city when his patrol was struck by
a homemade bomb - the second British soldier to die in 72 hours in Iraq.

Further north, in Kut, which fell briefly to the Mehdi Army in Sadr's spring
uprising against the US-led occupation, heavy overnight US bombing killed 84
people and wounded 176, medics said.

US planes pounded the southern Al-Shakia district, a densely populated Mehdi
Army stronghold, but medics said many of the dead were women and children.

The bombs also flattened the local office of Sadr's movement, which a
partisan said was empty at the time.

The recent Pentagon crash discussion on Rense.com has almost entirely focused on photos of plane debris on the lawn. Since most of the plane reportedly entered the building, we should also look for images of debris inside the building. Unfortunately, such images are very hard to come by since: (1) Much of the debris was burned and torn beyond recognition, (2) Most FEMA photos in the public domain were taken on 9/14/01, after much of the debris was cleared out of the building, (3) Most other photos remain in the private hands of investigators, rescue workers, and others who were inside the building. Many images are officially classified. The following article attempts to bring together all known images sent to me or in the public domain that show aircraft debris inside the Pentagon. The images were either found online or sent to me by recovery workers to be used with permission.   First, we shall examine witness accounts of plane debris inside the Pentagon. These were given by recovery workers, firefighters, engineers, and Pentagon officials. Their statements help in interpreting the various photos taken inside the building.   I. Witness Accounts of Wreckage Inside the Building   Witnesses described small pieces of plane debris in the building. Because of the fire, much of the debris was burned beyond recognition. Some pieces bore lime or yellow primer paint characteristic of internal aircraft parts. Larger pieces included seats, cockpit circuitry, and a landing gear. These accounts were drawn from Ron Harvey's excellent compilation and from my own research.   1) "Most of the wreckage was in very small pieces and most was carried out in drywall buckets. Some was large enough to identify -- including the tail number on the aircraft. I don't think there's any doubt about what it was and who owned it." Many witnesses also recalled seeing plane wreckage in A-E Drive next to the punchout hole. The following three items were mentioned: a piece of the nose fuselage or nose cone, a landing gear, and a tire tread.   6) Navy Lt. Commander David Tarantino described the A-E Drive punchout hole: "They found an area where fire surrounded a hole in a wall that was blown out. WASHINGTON - Two of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers had a support
network in the United States that included agents of the Saudi
government, and the Bush administration and FBI blocked a
congressional investigation into that relationship, Sen. Bob Graham
wrote in a book to be released Tuesday.

The discovery of the financial backing of the two hijackers ''would
draw a direct line between the terrorists and the government of Saudi
Arabia, and trigger an attempted coverup by the Bush administration,''
the Florida Democrat wrote.

And in Graham's book, Intelligence Matters, obtained by The Herald
Saturday, he makes clear that some details of that financial support
from Saudi Arabia were in the 27 pages of the congressional inquiry's
final report that were blocked from release by the administration,
despite the pleas of leaders of both parties on the House and Senate
intelligence committees.

He oversaw the Sept. 11 investigation on Capitol Hill with Rep. Porter
Goss, nominated last month to be the next CIA director. According to
Graham, the FBI and the White House blocked efforts to investigate the
extent of official Saudi connections to two hijackers.

Graham wrote that the staff of the congressional inquiry concluded
that two Saudis in the San Diego area, Omar al-Bayoumi and Osama
Bassan, who gave significant financial support to two hijackers, were
working for the Saudi government.

Al-Bayoumi received a monthly allowance from a contractor for Saudi
Civil Aviation that jumped from $465 to $3,700 in March 2000, after he
helped Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhdar -- two of the Sept. 11
hijackers -- find apartments and make contacts in San Diego, just
before they began pilot training.

When the staff tried to conduct interviews in that investigation, and
with an FBI informant, Abdussattar Shaikh, who also helped the
eventual hijackers, they were blocked by the FBI and the
administration, Graham wrote.

The administration and CIA also insisted that the details about the
Saudi support network that benefited two hijackers be left out of the
final congressional report, Graham complained.

a problem with the commonly cited cable spool images is foreshortening,
due to the extreme telephoto view.

one of the cable spools can be seen under the tree in the foreground.
note the distance between it and the entry hole area, which is just to
the right of the foreground light pole.  the other foreshortened angle
gives the illusion that the spools are just a few paces away, not tens
of meters.  thus, the photos usually cited by those asserting the
"spool proof" no-plane case are the worst ones for judging the distance
to the entry hole.

and given the distance to the entry hole, keep in mind that the plane
was traveling at a downward angle.  desmoulins says five degrees.  note
also the relative height of the visible cable spool and the height of
the engine-clipped power generator sitting behind the fence to the
right.  i don't see any problem with a close shave pass over the
spools, especially since the large-surface-area spools could have been
rolled or tossed closer to the building by the jet's powerful
slipstream.  examining a closeup of the generator, desmoulins estimates
the height of the lowest part of the starboard engine at 3-4 feet above
the ground when it struck the generator.  i'd say it could have been
higher, 5 feet or more.  i've been told the engines hang about 4 feet
below the lowest part of the fuselage.  that leaves 9 feet to clear the
cable spools which were apparently between 6-7 feet, not even counting
some of them sitting in a little hole.  which leaves a margin for
banking to the left as well.

note that these two photos show, in quite good detail, a large and
dense field of smoldering, flaming wreckage extending straight from the
entry hole to the helipad.  this is the "non-existent" wreckage avoided
by those types who selectively show photos of the clean grass far to
the right side, which was farther away but, again, appears to be closer
than it is in the foreshortened telephoto shots taken from the
direction of the cloverleaf.  not to mention the likelihood of the
jet's slipstream helping to blow the shredded wreckage away from this
area, which was under the flight path.

  Why Democrats Shouldn't Be Scared

  NEW YORK - If I've heard it once, I've heard it a hundred times from
discouraged Democrats and liberals as the Republican convention
here wrapped up this week. Their shoulders hunched, their eyes at a
droop, they lower their voice to a whisper hoping that if they don't say
it too loud it may not come true: "I...I...I think Bush is going to
win."

  Clearly, they're watching too much TV. Too much of Arnold
Schwarzenegger, Zell Miller, Dick Cheney and Rudy Giuliani. Too much of
swift boat veterans and Fox News commentators.

  Action heroes always look good on TV. On Wednesday night, the GOP even
made an action-hero video and showed it at the convention.
There was White House political czar Karl Rove and other administration
officials dressed up for "war" and going through boot camp on the
National Mall in Washington.

  I could only sit there in the convention hall and wish this were the
real thing: Rove, national security adviser Condi Rice and Co. being
sent to Iraq, and our boys and girls being brought home. But then the
lights came up, and everyone sitting in the Bush family box was having a
grand ol' hoot and a holler at the video they just saw.

  For some reason, all of this has scared the bejabbers out of the
Democrats. I can hear the wailing and moaning from Berkeley, Calif., to
Cambridge, Mass. The frightening scenes from the convention have sent
John Kerry's supporters looking for the shovels so they can dig
their underground bunkers in preparation for another four years of the
Dark Force.

  I can't believe all of this whimpering and whining. Kerry has been
ahead in many polls all summer long, but the Republicans come to New
York for one week off-Broadway and suddenly everyone is dressed in
mourning black and sitting shivah?

  Exactly what moment was it during the convention that convinced them
that the Republicans had now "connected" with the majority of
Americans and that it was all over? Arnold praising Richard Nixon?
Ooooh, that's a real crowd-pleaser. Elizabeth Dole decrying the removal
of the Ten Commandments from a courthouse wall in Alabama? Yes, that's a
big topic of conversation in the unemployment line in Akron,
Ohio. Georgia Sen. Miller, a Democratic turncoat, looking like Freddy
Krueger at an all-girls camp? His speech - and the look on what you
could see of his strangely lit face - was enough for parents to send
small children to their bedrooms.

  My friends - and I include all Democrats, independents and recovering
Republicans in this salutation - do not be afraid. Yes, the Bush
Republicans huff and they puff, but they blow their own house down.

  As many polls confirm, a majority of your fellow Americans believe in
your agenda. They want stronger environmental laws, are strong
supporters of women's rights, favor gun control and want the war in Iraq
to end.

  Rejoice. You're already more than halfway there when you have the
public on board. Just imagine if you had to go out and do the work to
convince the majority of Americans that women shouldn't be paid the same
as men. All they ask is that you put up a candidate for president
who believes in something and fights for those beliefs.

  Is that too much to ask?

  The Republicans have no idea how much harm they have done to
themselves. They used to have a folk-hero mayor of New York named
Rudy Giuliani. On 9/11, he went charging right into Ground Zero to see
whom he could help save. Everyone loved Rudy because he seemed
as though he was there to comfort all Americans, not just members of his
own party.

  But in his speech to the convention this week, he revised the history
of that tragic day for partisan gain:

Cantor Fitzgerald sues al Qaeda over Sept. 11

NEW YORK — Cantor Fitzgerald, the bond brokerage that suffered more deaths
in the Sept. 11 attacks than any other company, Friday sued al Qaeda, Saudi
Arabia and dozens of foreign companies seeking damages related to the
attacks on the World Trade Center.
The suit, filed as the three-year anniversary of the airplane attacks that
killed about 3,000 people approaches, is the latest filed in New York
federal court against al Qaeda, including one last year by a group of
insurance companies.

It seeks billions of dollars in damages, charging that the al Qaeda carried
off the attacks with the aid of foreign governments and corporations.

The attacks, according to the suit, "could not have been accomplished
without the knowing and intentional financial support lent al Qaeda and its
leaders by a global network of banks, financial institutions, charities,
relief organizations, businesses, individual financiers, foreign governments
and foreign governmental officials."

Cantor Fitzgerald, which said it lost 658 employees in the attacks, is
seeking to join the previous lawsuit filed by insurance companies, saying in
court papers it would conserve time and resources.

The Cantor Fitzgerald lawsuit took particular aim at Saudi Arabia, saying
the kingdom "knew and intended that these Saudi-based charity and relief
organization defendants would provide financial and material support and
substantial assistance to al-Qaeda."

According to the lawsuit, Saudi Arabia engaged in a pattern of racketeering
as it participated directly or indirectly in al-Qaeda's work through its
"alter-ego" charities and relief organizations, which it funded and
controlled.

The lawsuit alleged that Saudi Arabia materially supported al-Qaeda by
helping to raise money for it, by knowingly and intentionally employing
al-Qaeda operatives, by laundering its money and by providing al-Qaeda with
safe houses, false documents and ways to obtain weapons and military
equipment.

"This uninterrupted financial and material support and substantial
assistance enabled the al-Qaeda defendants to plan, orchestrate and carry
out the Sept. 11 attacks," the lawsuit said.

A lawyer for the firm declined to comment. Cantor Fitzgerald now has offices
in midtown Manhattan.

Saudi Arabia last month began a radio advertising campaign citing the Sept.
11 Commission's conclusion that the Saudi government did not fund al-Qaeda
as proof that it has been a loyal ally in the fight against terrorism.

As the ad campaign was launched, Saudi embassy spokesman Nail al-Jubeir said
the ads tell Americans "these are the facts that your own independent
commission has said about Saudi Arabia. You make up your mind."

The commission had also criticized Saudi Arabia, calling it "a problematic
ally in combating Islamic extremism." It said Saudi-funded Islamic schools
have been exploited by extremists and, while Saudi cooperation against
terrorism improved after the Sept. 11 attacks, "significant problems
remained."

Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Osama bin Laden and 15 of the 19
hijackers.

TELLURIDE, COLORADO -- Better make room for an extra crewmember aboard any spaceship heading outward. This person wonât require food, oxygen or water, nor even need to buckle up for safety. The tag-along traveler could, however, be a lifesaver in terms of getting the expedition to and from a celestial destination.
 
Roll out the welcome mat for the virtual astronaut and enter the 3D space of Peter Plantec, a consultant in virtual human design and animation, as well as a leading expert on visual entertainment. He also initiated the "Sylvie" project -- the first commercially available virtual human interface.
 
And if dispatching virtual humans from Earth doesnât turn on your thrusters, think about this. Itâs likely that extraterrestrial civilizations might send surrogate entities our way instead of propelling their delicate, soft-shell selves across interstellar mileage.
 
Enter interfacing
 
"In a sense, our space probes are a kind of virtual human," Plantec told SPACE.com after speaking at the 5th Annual Telluride Tech Festival, held here August 13-15. "They are very sophisticated. They have to make decisions on their ownânot many, but some. Itâs a very primitive stage of virtual human technology," he said.
 
Plantec envisions a partnership between in-the-flesh space voyagers and virtual humans. "We humans are fairly limited characters. We are very good at soft responsesâbut not very good at high-speed, highly complex responses. And thatâs what virtual humans are really great at. Thatâs their deal," he noted.
 
From a space perspective, not investigating the utility of virtual human technology in the future exploration of space is insane, Plantec said. "Itâs more than just looking like or acting like a human. It is all the capabilities behind thatâthe capabilities that can be used to make journeys into space more successful."
 
Filtering the input
 
Most certainly, a humans-to-Mars mission would be very complicated, fully loaded with high-tech gear and festooned with operating manuals, along with scads of on-line documentation. 
 
A virtual human could be set up to monitor highly complex systems in real time. It can interface with the human sojourner, easing that personâs workload, Plantec advised, by monitoring onboard systems and automatically make whatever critical adjustments it has been authorized to do.
 
"The future of space exploration has to do with filtering the input to the humans, so they donât get overloaded. And a virtual human is a great way to do it," Plantec said. 
 
Virtual persona 
 
Plantec bristles a bit when contrast is made between virtual humans and HAL 9000, that artificially flavored intelligence that audiences ate up like popcorn in the movie classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
 
"HAL was a vision of artificial intelligenceâand Iâm not a big fan of AI. Never have been," Plantec said. "What we really need is to fake conscious behavior so that we humans can have the emotional relationship with machines. You canât do that with AI."
 
At some point, there will be a merging of AI and the faking of consciousness, Plantec added, leading to AI beings that are self-programming entities and able to emulate human consciousness behavior. "And I look forward to that," he said.
 
Technological disenfranchised
 
Today, there are a number of advancements taking place in blending artistry and technology to virtual-human personality design. On-screen faces that humans talk to and interact with come replete with exquisite features, along with nuances of eye and lip movement, not to mention a dash of personality.
 
"Itâs eerie. You absolutely know that thereâs somebody inside there. And thatâs the kind of thing you have to do in order to captivate the technological disenfranchisedâthe people who are being left behind," Plantec explained. "We want to bridge between the ordinary human and technology. We can do that with the one thing that they really understandâand thatâs ordinary conversation."
 
Examples of where things are headed have been captured by Plantec in his bestseller on 3D animation: Caligari trueSpace2 Bible, as well as the recently published Virtual Humans -- nothing less than a build-it-yourself resource guide, complete with software and step-by-step instructions for fashioning your own creature of comfort.
 
Higher rungs of the evolutionary ladder
 
As virtual humans walk among us, so to speak, one can speculate about future implications. 
 
"We humans, I think, are hungry to bond with machinesâand I donât understand that at all," Plantec said. "Wouldnât it be interesting if it was a natural instinct that was the next part of our evolution? I really believe that, eventually, these things will evolve into a quasi-life form and we will form symbiotic relationships with them."

Dear Bill:

The chance you will ask for my opinion on your pending surgery
this week for blockages of your heart arteries is about the
same as you escaping the heart bypass business. Regardless,
for the sake of others and to clear my conscience by at least
trying, I will take this opportunity to share ten challenging
thoughts with you.

1) Don't be rushed into making a decision – think about it –
they gave you several days already – so immediate surgery is
obviously not critical – you have time to learn more.

Over 80% of men in the USA by your age (58 years) have
coronary artery disease which can be found by an angiogram,
and over half with your cholesterol level (233 mg/dl) have at
least one coronary artery already closed by 50% or more – in
other words, they are fair game for bypass surgeons.
Fortunately, coronary artery disease is not very deadly –
the over-all risk of death from this disease for people with
affected arteries is less than 2% per year, untreated. Compare
these facts with what you have been frightened into believing
this past weekend.

2) Nearly four decades of scientific research show coronary
artery bypass surgery fails to save lives in most cases. This
is because the goal of this surgery is to go around very
stable (rock hard) blockages; however, these firm, partial
obstructions to heart blood flow are not the life-threatening
problem – and your doctors know this well-established fact.
These big blockages rarely close down the arteries and almost
never cause heart attacks. However, most of the attention is
focused on these pseudo-villains found on your angiogram
because the result of their discovery feeds money into the
heart businesses.

3) The culprit lesions are tiny – invisible to the angiogram –
\sores (volatile plaques) which explode inside your arteries –

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - The United States and its allies have moved closer to
capturing Osama bin Laden in the last two months, a top U.S. counterterrorism
official said in a television interview broadcast Saturday.

"If he has a watch, he should be looking at it because the clock is ticking. He
will be caught," Joseph Cofer Black, the U.S. State Department coordinator for
counterterrorism, told private Geo television network.

Asked if concrete progress had been made during the last two months - when
Pakistan has arrested dozens of terror suspects including some key al-Qaida
operatives - Black said, "Yes, I would say this."

Black, who briefed a group of Pakistani journalists after talks with officials
here Friday, said he could not predict exactly when bin Laden and other top
al-Qaida fugitives would be nabbed.

"What I tell people, I would be surprised but not necessarily shocked if we wake
up tomorrow and he's been caught along with all his lieutenants. That can happen
because of the programs and infrastructure in place," he told Geo.

Bin Laden and his top associate, Ayman al-Zawahri, are believed to be hiding
some place along the rugged border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Officials
have divulged no solid intelligence about bin Laden's precise whereabouts, and
it's not clear if they have any.

Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its war on terror, and Black's
visit comes weeks after Pakistani security forces captured Ahmed Khalfan
Ghailani, a Tanzanian wanted for the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in east Africa,
and Mohammed Naeem Noor Khan, a Pakistani computer expert allegedly linked to
al-Qaida operatives around the world.

The arrests led to a terror warning in the United States, and arrests in Britain
and the United Arab Emirates.

Black attended a meeting of the Pakistan-U.S. Joint Working Group on
Counterterrorism and Law Enforcement in Islamabad on Thursday and Friday.

During the talks, Pakistan asked U.S. officials for more helicopters,
surveillance and communications equipment to help Pakistani forces guard border
areas near Afghanistan "more efficiently," a Pakistani official at the talks
said.

"We got a positive response from the American officials," said the official, who
spoke on condition of anonymity.

Pakistan has deployed about 70,000 troops along the Afghan border and conducted
several military operations this year in its lawless and largely autonomous
tribal regions against al-Qaida suspects and their local supporters.

Black hailed Pakistan's efforts in counterterrorism - despite criticism from
Western officials who say that elements of the former ruling Taliban regime in
Afghanistan still operate inside Pakistan.

"In terms of national programs and effectiveness, I would put Pakistan up
against anyone else ... If you look at the arrests they have made, the
information they have developed and the lives that have been saved, Pakistan is
doing a great job," he said.

He added, however, that, "you can always do more."
