VICTIMS ABUSED INSIDE COURTS

AN Adelaide court yesterday heard graphic details of how a magistrate allegedly 
sexually abused five boys.

Peter Michael Liddy was facing the Supreme Court on the first day of his trial. The 
57-year-old, of Kapunda, has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of indecent assault, 
six counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under 12, one count of 
procuring an act of gross indecency and one of offering a benefit to a witness.
All but one of the offences are alleged to have occurred between 1983 and 1986 while 
Mr Liddy was a magistrate. He retired in 1999, after 25 years in the judiciary.

The last count allegedly occurred on June 11, 1999, and relates to the payment of a 
sum of $5000 to one complainant as an inducement to withhold or give false evidence.

The court was told that on one occasion Mr Liddy locked a young boy in a courthouse 
cell and refused to let him out until he performed oral sex on him.

Although the boy was in tears, Mr Liddy turned him around, put his head over a sink, 
and then raped him, the court was told.

Opening Mr Liddy's trial, Trish Kelly, prosecuting, said each of his five alleged 
victims had been abused in courthouses in which the former magistrate presided.

One boy was sexually assaulted in Mr Liddy's chambers in the Glenelg Courthouse after 
he had watched Mr Liddy complete a case, Ms Kelly said.

The court heard Mr Liddy met the boys through his positions as a coach at the Brighton 
Surf Life Saving Club and a state junior life-saving coach.

Each of the alleged victims was a nipper  junior lifesavers aged from seven to 13.

Some of the boys joined the Brighton SLSC after Mr Liddy gave presentations to their 
schools, Ms Kelly said.

The prosecution says that Mr Liddy used and abused his position, both as a magistrate 
and an official of the Brighton SLSC, first of all to gain the friendship and trust of 
these young boys and the parents of these boys . . . she said.

Ms Kelly said this enabled Mr Liddy to spend large amounts of time with the boys 
alone and in company sometimes, and eventually overnight, on overnight trips.

Ms Kelly said the five alleged victims were part of a smaller group that the accused 
chose to take away on day trips and sometimes the whole of the weekend.

Mr Liddy regularly drove through Adelaide in his van to pick up the boys before surf 
life-saving carnivals, the court heard. He even had written to some parents  on paper 
with court letterheads, signed Peter Liddy, magistrate  asking for their permission 
to take their children to and from training.

You will hear evidence the boys who were closest to the accused would regularly sit 
in the front of the van, next to the accused, and sexual activity would often take 
place on the way to the beach, Ms Kelly said.

The boys were introduced to sexual conversations and games, which they played at 
locations such as cock rock, near Maslins Beach.

Some of this horseplay (was) quite normal and natural for young boys but . . . there 
are other aspects of that behaviour which the prosecution says was encouraged and 
condoned and, in some cases, joined in with by the accused for the very purpose of 
introducing the complainants to the kind of sexual activity with which he is now 
charged, Ms Kelly said.

As well as the Glenelg and Victor Harbor courthouses, the offences allegedly occurred 
in the showers at the Brighton SLSC, a Victor Harbor hotel, a swimming hole and an 
island off Port Elliot.

Ms Kelly said Mr Liddy had formed a particularly close relationship with the alleged 
victim relating to the bribe charge.

He had told him I'm going to leave you everything.

During a visit to the Victor Harbor hotel, Mr Liddy allegedly took explicit photos of 
himself and the boy. Mr Liddy described him to hotel staff as his son, the court heard.

In a brief defence opening, Marie Shaw, QC, for Mr Liddy, said the jury may find the 
allegations downright shocking but urged them to keep an open mind while the 
evidence unfolded.

The trial, before Justice Margaret Nyland, will continue today when the jury will 
travel to view various sites related to the case.

Report: Jesse Jackson Sued for Child Support

 CHICAGO (Reuters) - The mother of Rev. Jesse Jackson (news - web sites)'s
out-of-wedlock daughter has sued him for formal child-support and visitation
arrangements, the Chicago Tribune reported on Sunday.

The civil lawsuit was filed about two weeks ago in California after
negotiations with Jackson and his attorneys over much of the past year
failed to produce an agreement, the newspaper reported.

Jackson, 59, acknowledged in January that he had fathered a child with Karin
Stanford, 39, a former top aide in an organization affiliated with the civil
rights leader's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.

Jackson said at the time that he was providing financial support of about
$3,000 a month for the girl, who turns 2 next month. Stanford also received
a payment of $35,000 dollars when she left the organization.

A spokeswoman for Stanford said Jackson, who is married, had not seen the
child since the story broke in January, the Tribune reported. A hearing is
set for May 9 in a family court in Los Angeles, where Stanford lives with
the child, it said.

Last month Jackson made a rare financial disclosure to parry questions about
payments made to Stanford.

The Tribune said details, including Jackson's $120,000 annual salary, were
included in a 102-page statement that he gave the newspaper to counteract
questions raised about his finances.

The disclosure came after the National Legal and Policy Center, a
conservative Virginia-based group, said it had filed a complaint with the
Internal Revenue Service (news - web sites).

It said that one of Jackson's tax-exempt groups, the Citizenship Education
Fund, may have violated tax law by using funds for personal purposes,
questioning whether ``paying off a mistress ... is a legitimate use of
assets.''

Stanford was executive director of the education fund.

Jackson also released financial information amid questions about whether he
stifled his criticism of corporate America in exchange for donations to his
organization.

Namibian President: AIDS Originated in Pentagon
The United States mission in Namibia will not officially react to President Sam 
Nujoma's statement on Sunday that Americans had created HIV-AIDS as part of a 
biological warfare experiment, for they do not want people to look into the matter 
deeper.

Informed sources stated yesterday and on Tuesday that the US Embassy in Windhoek, had 
contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an attempt to confirm they had been made 
and to enquire in what context they had been uttered. It was further indicated that 
the US Embassy was concerned about Nujoma's remarks, which it believes will expose the 
origin of HIV-AIDS.

The embassy was wrongly reported to be interested in having the correct information 
about the origin of the deadly virus and disease provided to the President. However, 
yesterday Terry Wilkin, spokesperson for the US mission in Namibia attached to the US 
Information Service, said on enquiry that there would be no official reaction from the 
American Embassy on the issue.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Braam Cupido, also said no meeting between 
American diplomats and representatives from Government had taken place on the topic. 
Nujoma on Sunday informed guests at his farm, Etunda, in the Otavi area of his theory 
on the origin of HIV-AIDS.

The President said: I know who produced HIV-AIDS - the Americans.

He said a French scientist, whom he did not name, had made the discovery that 
HIV-AIDS was man-made. According to the President, Americans creating biological 
warfare capacity at the time of the Vietnam War produced HIV-AIDS and started the 
spread of the virus when they conducted tests on homosexuals, some of whom afterwards 
slept with women.

He made the remarks when one of his guests gave a Christian-themed spiritual book to 
him and told him that its American writer might be coming to Namibia to also address 
the issue of HIV-AIDS. The writer's American origin apparently sparked the President 
to announce his thoughts on the issue.

This is hardly a new problem. It's simply an old problem with new technology: Stupid 
police making unreasonable assumptions.

Such as:

Someone burgled a house. You were seen in the vicinity of the house. Therefore you 
must have burgled the house

or

Someone set off a bomb in a hotel. You had been patronising that hotel. Therefore you 
must have set off the bomb.

Of course, it's usually minorities (blacks, hispanics, Irish etc.) who the police are 
'naturally' suspicious of, and therefore tend to be arrested for crimes there is no 
real evidence they committed other than the classic 'being in the wrong place at the 
wrong time' evidence. There was an article posted some time ago, I think relating to 
the Diallo shooting, which said that black males know that if a crime is committed, 
they had better clear off or they are likely to be arrested if they are spotted 
anywhere near the scene.

Having it on film like this does make it easy to sue the other parties here at least. 
If this fellow was black or Asian (the article doesn't mention his race) he would no 
doubt be able to cry 'racism' quite effectively.

It may sound like a fictional short story but Allan Dunne was filmed,
featured on TV as a criminal, arrested and questioned when he turned up to a
police station to explain, suspended and threatened with the sack, all
within two days and all thanks to modern CCTV surveillance technology.

His crime? To take £20 out of his own account from a cash machine.

Allan was caught on CCTV making the withdrawn soon after a thief had used
the cashpoint with a stolen card. Undercover police assumed him to be an
accomplice and released the footage they had of him to Granada TV's
Crimefile programme. This went out on TV the next day, the Daily Mail
reports.

Allan immediately went to a police station with records of his bank account
to explain the error but was arrested and questioned. He was eventually
bailed and told to return in a month. Subsequently, his bosses suspended
him.

When he finally managed to get the truth of the matter across, Greater
Manchester Police suddenly changed tack and apologised unreservedly. Mr
Dunne can have his job back but he has yet to return because he says he's
stressed out and people in the street will think he's a criminal. And can
you blame him?

The fact is that Allan has every right to sue not only the police but also
Granada for showing the programme. And the fact remains that this would
never have happened and would never have gone so far had it not been for the
false confidence that people have in this surveillance technology.

Just last weekend, a long feature in the Sunday Times went into this very
scenario of innocent people being caught up in a web because data is
accumulated so fast that people automatically assume guilt.

As you may know, the UK is currently the most monitored place in the entire
world. There isn't a street in London where you can't be picked up on CCTV

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Utah is preparing to
challenge a district court decision that properly found the state's new
official English law constitutional. Utah voters approved the law as
Initiative A on the ballot in last November's election.

Third District Judge Ronald E. Nehring declared the voter-approved
official English statute constitutional but largely symbolic. He ruled that
government employees may speak any language in the course of doing
business, but only communications that are in English are official, while
everything else is unofficial.

Probably the ACLU will include some of the arguments used to defend
Bill Clinton's Executive Order 13166 issued August 11, 2000. Entitled
Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English
Proficiency, it requires federal agencies to provide programs and
activities normally provided in English to non-English speaking
residents.

Clinton's Executive Order was an attempt to elevate the inability to speak
English to a protected civil right (like race, color, sex, etc.). His Order
cannot be justified by any federal law and should be rescinded by the
Bush Administration.

The attempt to undermine English as the official language of the
American government has powerful political motivations. Influence and
political spin are associated with translating laws, official statements,
and campaign positions into non-English versions.

Criticism of the Utah referendum and the court decision upholding it is
part of a national movement to balkanize America by compelling federal
and state governments to carry on official business in foreign languages.
Hundreds of U.S. voting districts have already been forced by statutes
and court decisions to print ballots in foreign languages.

The fraud called bilingual education was massively rejected by the voters
in California and Arizona referenda, but the federal government still
pours millions of our tax dollars into this failed experiment. It's a lie to call
it bilingual, because it doesn't teach two languages; thousands of
immigrant children in public schools are kept speaking their native
tongue rather than learning English.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is harassing
businesses that try to have their employees speak English on the job.
Some U.S. citizenship ceremonies have even been performed in foreign
languages.

If an activist court pretends to invalidate the Utah official English law, it
won't be long before we see the other side of the coin: a lawsuit
demanding that the state's business be conducted in foreign languages.
This has already happened in Alabama, where a woman demanded that
she be given the state driver's test in Spanish; her case, Alexander v.
Sandoval, will be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court this spring.

The U.S. Supreme Court already held in Employment Div. v. Smith
(1990) that we do not have to provide exceptions from generally
applicable laws for religious practices and customs. It should certainly
follow that a state need not provide exceptions from generally applicable
laws and regulations to accommodate languages other than English.

English is becoming the language of the 21st century world and this is no
time to discourage U.S. residents and immigrants from learning English.
English is now the second most widely spoken language in the world,
with only Chinese dialects spoken by more people.

English is overwhelmingly the second language of choice worldwide.
English is the official language of the European Central Bank and the
working language of the Asian trade group ASEAN.

In multilingual continental Europe, a fierce battle over language popularity
appears to be ending with English emerging as the standard.
Switzerland has three official languages, German, French and Italian, but
it recently adopted English to be taught to all as the second language
rather than one of its official languages.

The Germans have given up trying to persuade more Brits to learn
German and are now promoting English as the language of the 21st
century, with lessons for children as young as six. Germany's leading
newspaper produces an eight-page English edition and declared that
English is going to be the lingua franca of the century.

English has exploded in popularity since the advent of the internet and
about 80 percent of the internet uses English. Our language has
tremendous advantages for internet use: a smaller alphabet than most
major languages, no accented or pictograph characters, easy
interchangeabiity of nouns, verbs and adjectives, and little variance in
form for pronouns and verbs.

Sex crime victims to sue state

BRISBANE
Thursday 19 April 2001

Legal action by two victims of former politician and convicted paedophile Bill D'Arcy 
has been given the go-ahead despite Queensland Government attempts to have it struck 
out.

The two women, aged in their 40s, were victims of D'arcy when he was their teacher at 
a primary school in central Queensland between 1963 and 1965.

They are seeking up to $250,000 each for psychological harm and personal indignity. 
They allege the Queensland Government and education minister breached their duty of 
care.

One of the women was raped by D'Arcy in front of her class. The other was indecently 
assaulted.

Last November, D'Arcy, 61, a former Queensland Labor MP, was convicted of 18 child sex 
charges, including three of rape. He was jailed for 14 years.

His appeal against the conviction and sentence will be heard in May.


The government wanted the action struck out on the basis that the claim was 
unreasonable.

The government conceded it owed a duty of care, but it was argued that the school 
system's only failure was that D'Arcy sexually assaulted the children at school.

District Court Judge Hugh Botting found the government and the education minister had 
a duty to ensure that reasonable care was taken.

Judge Botting said in his written judgment that if it could be established that the 
assaults occurred, then it would have been demonstrated that the government or the 
minister were in breach of that duty.

Premier Peter Beattie said on Tuesday that he was concerned about the legal action, 
but was unable to comment further for legal reasons.

Everyone: Do what i do and don't open any attachments from anyone. This inlcudes all

Instant Aussies: the warriors Israel shunned
 Bound for Australia ... Danny Nassif and his children on the Sea of Gallilee.

Danny Nassif is 30, boyishly good-looking, with a tattoo of a parachute and a cross on 
his arm. He has been a combat soldier in the South Lebanese Army for as long as he can 
remember.

He is sitting in an Israeli resort on the Sea of Galilee but he wants to be with his 
sister in Sydney. "My sister hoped I would be with her for Christmas," he says. "Now 
I'm hoping it will be Easter."

But a furious argument in Australia's Arabic community has been triggered by the 
immigration of Mr Nassif and as many as 200 other members of the former South Lebanese 
Army - the Israeli-sponsored and trained militia that helped hold Israel's "security 
zone" in Southern Lebanon until last May.


The New York-based Human Rights Watch and the B'tselem organisation in Israel have 
documented human rights abuses by the SLA against Palestinians and Lebanese citizens 
since 1980.

About 3,000 Lebanese militiamen and their families fled to Israel after its hasty 
retreat from Lebanon. Most are afraid to return to Lebanon, where they fear they will 
be seen as traitors, while hostility from Israeli Arabs, who regard them as 
collaborators, is making it impossible to resettle them in Israel. In September Israel 
offered $US12,000 ($24,700) for an unmarried man and $US15,000 for a family if they 
went back to Lebanon. "They think we're stupid," Mr Nassif says. "Going back means 
going straight to jail, to torture and interrogation."

Israel has asked other countries to take the refugees but, apart from Germany, which 
accepted 400, only Australia has agreed. Most of those who went to Germany are back in 
Israel, unable to tolerate the hatred from Palestinians and others there.


"It would be like dropping a few SS troopers into postwar Carlton to bring 200 SLA 
killers [to Australia]," says Bilal Cleland, of the Islamic Council of Victoria. "They 
have a more dreadful human rights record than the Israeli Army."

"It is strange that the Australian Government is bringing traitors to their own 
people, who have committed crimes against their own people, while keeping hundreds of 
refugees in detention camps," says Ali Kazak, head of the General Palestinian 
Delegation in Australia.

But the editor of Sydney's The Middle East Herald, Sarkis Karam, says the refugees 
will be warmly welcomed by the vast majority of Australia's 160,000-plus Lebanese 
community. "This is a humanitarian issue, and Australia has a proud record in this 
area."

A prominent Lebanese voice in Melbourne, Ray Werden, says community leaders made "very 
strong representations to [the Immigration Minister] Mr Ruddock to bring the SLA 
people here". He and Mr Karam concede that members of the SLA committed human rights 
abuses but say it was only a small minority - and none of them are coming to Australia.

A spokesman for Mr Ruddock says there will be exhaustive security checks.

"Anyone involved in atrocities or inappropriate activities will not get a visa.''

Because the screening would be so stringent, it would be some time before the first 
refugees arrived, he says. Only people with family already here are eligible.

Last April Human Rights Watch found "grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions by the 
SLA, including torture and expulsion of civilians from the Israeli-occupied zone".

Yet the group also documented how "Lebanese men and boys have been forced to serve in 
the SLA against their will. The families have been punished ... if they evaded or 
deserted from service in the SLA militia".

Mr Nassif says no ideology motivated his decision to join the SLA - just the high 
unemployment in his war-ravaged country.

Daoud Nadaf, 54, says he has no regrets about working for the Israelis, but he draws 
his finger across his neck to illustrate what he thinks Israeli Arabs would like to do 
to him. He just hopes Lebanese Australians do not make trouble for them when they 
arrive.

He pulls out his address book to look up where his three brothers live in Sydney and 
where he hopes he will be with his wife, Nassima.

I was wondering about this. Saturday morning, about 2 am, I heard
voices outside, and I went to investigate -- turns out the neighbors
were arguing -- and I looked up, and the sky was blood red. I thought
maybe I'd been spending too much time on the Internet, especially since
right about then, the toilet flushed itself. I actually got scared, I

McKevitt charged as 'godfather of terror'

THE reputed chief of staff of the Real IRA, Michael McKevitt, was last night charged 
with directing activities of an illegal organisation.

He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted.

McKevitt (51) appeared under heavy security before three judges at the Special 
Criminal Court shortly after 9.30.

He had been held at Balbriggan Garda station since his arrest early on Thursday 
morning at his home at Blackrock, Dundalk.

McKevitt, in a grey jacket, black jumper and jeans, remained impassive as the charges 
were read to him.

He was charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the IRA and, 
on dates between August 1999 and October 2000, directing the activities of an 
organisation styling itself the IRA.

He is the first person to be charged with this offence which was one of a series of 
measures introduced in the wake of the Omagh bomb atrocities in August 1998, aimed at 
cracking down on the "godfathers" of dissident terrorist organisations.

McKevitt, who was flanked by four prison officers, stared straight ahead but showed no 
emotion in court.

When formally charged he stood up and at one stage folded his arms in front of him.

His defence solicitor, Michael Hennessy, made no reply when asked if he had anything 
to say. McKevitt was then remanded in custody to appear again at the court at 12pm 
next Tuesday when it is expected an application for bail will be made.

Last night he was being held in Portlaoise Prison.

The charge was one of a series of new measures introduced by the Government in an 
amendment to the Offences Against the State Act in the wake of the Omagh bomb atrocity 
which killed 29 people in August 1998.

The Government's aim with the new legislation was to pave the way for a concerted 
effort to crack down on the "godfathers" and leadership of dissident organisations. 
Section six of the amended act deals with directing an illegal organisation.

During the Provisional IRA's campaigns of terror, anti-terrorist police officers were 
frustrated by the lack of legislation which allowed them to bring charges against the 
"armchair generals" who directed and controlled paramilitary organisations but did not 
become directly involved in the crimes.

McKevitt was long suspected by the Garda and the RUC of being quartermaster general of 
the Provisionals and responsible for arms procurements including the four shipments 
brought in from Libya in the mid 1980s.

After a major row at a Provisional army convention in Falcarragh, Co Donegal in 
October 1997, McKevitt was said by gardai to have walked out and resigned from its 
12-person army executive.

He was subsequently alleged to have established the breakaway Real IRA and become its 
chief of staff. Since the introduction of the post-Omagh legislative amendments, 
gardai have been carefully building up dossiers on a number of people suspected of 
being leaders of the Real IRA and the other main renegade republican group, the 
Continuity IRA. McKevitt was one of the prime targets of that Garda operation that was 
masterminded by the security and intelligence section at Garda headquarters in the 
Phoenix Park and involved members of Special Branch, Emergency Response Unit, National 
Surveillance Unit, National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and local gardai in the 
Louth-Meath division.

Legislative changes introduced since Omagh by Justice Minister John O'Donoghue also 
remove the right to silence and allows a court to draw an inference from a person's 
refusal to answer questions.

Amendments to the bail laws have also made it more difficult for persons facing 
serious criminal charges to be set free by the court pending trial.

McKevitt was arrested by armed detectives.

Counterintelligence advisory describes student snoops

WASHINGTON  The United States is quietly warning officials to beware of Israelis and 
Islamic militants who snoop around government offices.

U.S. officials said the Israelis and Islamic militants pose as foreign students and 
attempt to enter federal buildings and learn of activities in government offices. When 
they are stopped, the intruders identify themselves as delivering works of art.

So far, two intruders have been arrested, Middle East Newsline reports. The officials 
said the intruders have also tried to enter the homes of senior U.S. federal 
administrators.

"There may be two groups involved, and they refer to themselves as 'Israeli art 
students,'" a warning issued by the National Counterintelligence Center said. "One 
group has an apparently legitimate money-making goal while the second, perhaps a 
non-Israeli group, may have ties to a Middle Eastern Islamic fundamentalist group."

U.S. officials said the intrusion effort began in late January.

Israel was named as one of five U.S. allies that pursue the most aggressive efforts to 
obtain industrial secrets in the United States. Other U.S. allies named in the 
National Counterintelligence Center's report to Congress were France, Japan, South 
Korea and Taiwan. The center, staffed by CIA and FBI personnel, coordinates government 
efforts to identify and counter foreign intelligence threats to U.S. national and 
economic security.

It was the first time the center identified specific countries as engaging in 
espionage. The report by the center to Congress asserted that these countries seek 
technology on information systems, sensors, lasers, electronics and aeronautic systems 
technologies.

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ White supremacist Buford O. Furrow was sentenced to life in prison
after apologizing for killing a postal worker and wounding five people at a Jewish
center.

``I want to try, although it is impossible, to convey my deep sorrow,'' the
39-year-old said Monday as he read a statement in a courtroom filled with sobbing
victims of his 1999 shooting rampage and their relatives.

``I think about what happened every day and I will grieve for it every day for the
rest of my life,'' he said.

U.S. District Judge Nora Manella imposed two life sentences without possibility of
parole, plus 110 years in prison and payment of dlrs 690,294 in restitution.

Furrow blamed mental illness, saying he wished he had been confined to a mental
hospital to which he tried to commit himself before the shootings.

He insisted he did not harbor hatred for his victims because of race or religion.

``I'm sorry for how I traumatized your lives,'' he said to families in the courtroom.
``I would give anything for this not to have happened.''

Furrow stormed into the North Valley Jewish Community Center on Aug. 10, 1999, and
raked it with gunfire, wounding three boys, a teen-age girl and a woman. He then
headed into the San Fernando Valley neighborhood and killed Filipino-American mailman
Joseph Ileto.

In a plea bargain, Furrow pleaded guilty in January to 16 federal charges. The slaying
of Ileto was a federal offense because he was a government employee.

Furrow fired more than 70 bullets into the Jewish center, which was packed with
children attending day programs. Ileto, killed hours later, was shot nine times.

Furrow surrendered in Las Vegas the next day, declaring he had intended to send a
``wake-up call to America to kill Jews.''

``Your actions were a reminder that bigotry is alive,'' the judge said Monday. ``If
you've sent a message, it is that even the most violent crimes can strengthen a
community.''

Furrow sat at the counsel table, his hands and feet shackled, and appeared a pale and
docile figure, shrunken from the swaggering, hate-filled man who first faced the court
19 months ago.

His remarks were followed by emotional speeches from survivors and victims' families.
The most anguished was Mindy Finkelstein, who was a 16-year-old camp counselor at the
center.

``I've been to hell and back,'' she told the judge. ``Buford Furrow tried to kill me
and he failed. But in a way he succeeded.''

The mother, brother and sisters of Ileto described the devastating loss to their
loved-one.

``Sometimes I hope this was just a nightmare and my son will come to the front door,''
said Lillian Santos Ileto. ``But I'm afraid it's not so. I will never get over the
loss of my son.''

Furrow, of Olympia, Washington, had a history of involvement with anti-Semitic groups
in the Pacific Northwest, among them the Aryan Nations.

He also had a history of mental problems and had tried to get help without success,
his lawyers said when they argued to spare his life.

THE Bible is an adults-only book that is "so full of eroticism" it should not be given 
to children, according to a Roman Catholic theologian.

Don Bruno Maggioni said he would today tell a conference, titled Eroticism in the Old 
Testament, that scripture was full of sex and violence. He said the keynote of the 
conference was the quotation from The Song of Songs  "Kiss me with the kisses of your 
mouth".
The conference will be held in the northern city of Mantua under the auspices of the 
Italian National Bible Association. Father Maggioni, a noted biblical scholar, told 
Avvenire, the Catholic daily: "The Bible is a work for adults not just because of its 
sexual pages but because of the kind of questions it raises about mankind."

But there was nothing scandalous about biblical sex. "The Bible uses the word to 
'know', as in 'carnal knowledge', which implies a profound relationship of communion 
and knowledge between man and woman, which, in turn, is a reflection of God's knowing 
relationship with mankind." He said the Bible's erotic vocabulary had once been 
suppressed by priests and confessors "when the climate was more chaste, and reading 
rather crude expressions might be thought scandalous".

"But in reality, the Bible uses the language of the people  it is sincere, 
spontaneous, a language for all people, for all times. It only mentions sex when it is 
strictly necessary: when it forms part of a story  like the episode of Noah's 
daughters, or for diffusing information about laws of matters of health and hygiene, 
or to describe the sins of some of its characters like David and Bathsheba," he said.

The Book of Samuel tells how King David had a passionate affair with Bathsheba, wife 
of Uriah, a Hittite mercenary in his army, and then put her husband in the front line 
of battle so he would be killed. They married and their second son was Solomon, author 
of the Song of Songs.

Father Maggioini said sex was "the very first thing we read in Genesis  we read about 
Adam and Eve being naked and full of sin and shame". In other words, the threat of 
disorder is always "lurking in the joy of sex". He said the Bible assumed a natural 
attitude to sex but warned of the "terrible destructive force which sex can assume 
outside the framework of God's laws".

filed a 40 billion dollar (43.5 billion euro) law suit against the
United States for not bombing the Auschwitz extermination camp, the
German daily Berliner Zeitung said Wednesday.
   The plaintiffs maintain that this inaction during World War II
contributed to the genocide of Europe's Jews, the newspaper
reported.
   They are also seeking damages from the American military for the
theft of property from Hungarian Jews in April 1944.
   One of the plaintiffs, Kurt-Julius Goldstein, vice-president of
the International Auschwitz Committee, said the Nazis were not the
only ones responsible for what happened to the Jews.
   "It is not a question of exonerating Nazi war criminals from
their principal responsibility in the genocide of European jews,"
Goldstein said, but a tribunal ought to take note "there were others
responsible for the Holocaust."

That presupposes that they HAD clones. I really believe this was one bit of 
super-science the soviets managed to keep all to themselves and known only to a small 
number of people for many years. The current applications of the technology may be 
theirs being applied commercially, or it may have been sucesfully discovered 
independantly by Western researchers. Consider also the far greater leeway Soviet 
scientists had in regards to human subjects and mortality rates, compared to the US 
and other Western countries which, while these abuses happen infrequently, they try to 
keep it quiet and hence can't use as much money, personnel etc.

This disproves nothing considering the possibilities of time travel and/or

I'm sure there are quite a few different 'Flat Earth Societies' all over the, err, 
globe?

I gave a quite succesful talk on this topic at the Speaker's Forum in Melbourne 
(Australia) a couple of years back. I think I convinced quite a few of the audience. 
One guy (who habitually has a big placard and is a campaigner against 'psychic 
groping') claimed that he knew the Earth was round because of the satellite photos on 
the weather report. I said "Everything else on the news is made up, why shouldn't the 
weather report be any different?'.

You can often head of a heavily scientific argument by claiming that the other 
person's calculations/hypothesis is obviously flawed due to it's adherence to the 
spherical Earth model.

Cloning has been theoretically possible for decades. There has been speculation for 
many years that wealthy individuals were paying to have themselves cloned (probably 
without much success). There was a book in the 70's (widely believed to be a hoax) 
claiming to be a (French?) journalist's account of a wealthy US businessman's 
sucessful raising of his clone as his son. I'm sure others on the list know the book 
I'm talking about.

The older version of 'cloning' was to take an ovum and a sperm/DNA sample and 
manually, with very tiny instruments, insert the desired DNA material into the ovum, 
and then the whole into the 'mother' (like normal in vitro fertilisation) hopefully 
leading to the person/animal being born again.

And then there's the Yeltsin business. How was it that he'd be staggering around in 
public and then have a massive heart attack, and a few weeks later he'd be back to 
normal only to rapidly deteriorate again (all this was in front of the world's 
television cameras.) Theory: He got to the technology late, but found some Soviet era 
lab who whipped him up some 'carbon copy' type clones. This is well advanced to what 
cloning in the west is currently, but then maybe they've had a 30 or 40 year headstart?

It's called science fiction fantasy bullshit. No one can do what you are
alleging.

Sorry, I didn't realise you no-doubt believe that the world is flat, 6,000 years old 
and the computer you're using works via a little man who runs around doing things. You 
shouldn't carry on about things which you are obviously so ignorant of. Genetic 
engineering is very advanced, cloning etc. is a reality (and many contend it has been 
used for several decades at least).


As unpolitically correct as it is to say so, there are certain distinctive
DNA features for Black people, gays, left-handed people etc. They can use
that to make the virus far more agressive towards such people.

How do you know this? Do you just make stuff up? What you think you are
describing, can't be done yet. There is a way to target certain groups,
but not through " genetic engeneering."

No, I don't 'just make stuff up' as you so eloquently put it. Perhaps you should try 
and pass a high school level biology class and learn a bit about it, rather than

Bush Jokes with Journalists About Cloning Cheney

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush (news - web sites) capped an annual 
dinner with Washington's top journalists on Saturday by joking that he was trying to 
clone Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) so he could take the next four 
years off.

Clad in a white tie and stylish tuxedo, Bush engaged in a round of self-deprecating 
humor at the 116th annual Gridiron Club dinner, telling veteran Washington writers he 
feared his staff was picking up on jokes about his lack of intelligence.

Every morning, he quipped, the first item on his schedule was an ``intelligence 
briefing.''

The president said Democratic power broker Robert Strauss had given him some valuable 
advice on that score -- ``You can fool some of the people all of the time, and those 
are the ones you need to concentrate on.''

But Bush insisted he was no dummy and said he had, in fact, just completed mapping the 
human genome.

``My goal is to clone another Dick Cheney, that way I won't have to do anything,'' he 
told the journalists, who host the dinner each year to ``singe but not burn'' the 
president and his cabinet with a series of skits and songs.

The president acknowledged his tendency to mangle the English language in his 
speeches, saying, ``You know that foot and mouth disease rampant in Europe? I've got 
it.''

Cheney and other top Bush officials also attended the dinner, including Attorney 
General John Ashcroft (news - web sites), Environmental Protection Agency (news - web 
sites) Administrator Christine Todd Whitman (news - web sites), and Federal Reserve

called, ``El Taco Grande.''

Bush ribbed Ashcroft for his reserved demeanor, contrasting the former Missouri 
senator to Bush's own wild days when he was in college.

``He's a good man, a little straight-laced -- not the kind of guy I hung out with in 
college, if you know what I mean.''

Former vice presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman, a senator from Connecticut, was 
the featured Democratic speaker, but he stuttered when he tried to address Cheney:

``Good evening, Mr. President, Mr. V... V... V... For some reason, I am still having 
trouble getting that title in front of your name,'' he told Cheney, seated at a nearby 
table. ``Maybe I should just address you the way the president does -- 'Good evening, 
Sir.'''

Ashcroft also got a few laughs when he rejected the perception that Bush is sloughing 
off and insisted the Bush White House was committed to working, ``24/7 -- 24 hours a 
week, seven months a year.''

He also mentioned a new directive from the White House instructing cabinet secretaries 
to plan to visit all 54 U.S. states. (There are only 50 U.S. states.)

The drawn-out 2000 presidential election prompted numerous jokes throughout the 
evening, with Bush telling consumer activist and Green Party presidential candidate 
Ralph Nader (news - web sites) that the recent media-sponsored recounts of 
presidential ballots in Florida had clearly identified Nader as the winner.

Ashcroft said the election results sent a strong message to Democrat Al Gore (news - 
web sites) and Lieberman: ``People were clearly tired of peace and prosperity,'' he 
said.

The dinner menu also came in the shape of a butterfly -- a not so subtle reference to 
the so-called butterfly ballots that were among those contested in Florida.

 Opinion of Arthur Schlesinger, former special assistant to the late U.S. president 
assassinated in Dallas

DECLARING himself unsure about the Kennedy assassination, Arthur Schlesinger, former 
special assistant to the U.S. president, shared his doubts about the existence of a 
lone assassin or a conspiracy. He states that had there been a plot, it would have 
been by the anti-Castro groups in any case. He went on to say that nobody knows and 
that he doesnt have a theory about it.

In a press conference, Schlesinger explained that in October of 1963, with the help of 
Cuban Ambassador Carlos Lechuga, the possibility of normalizing relations with the 
island was considered, but that opportunity ended with the bullet that assassinated 
Kennedy in Dallas, Texas.

At the end of the first session of the academic conference, Bay of Pigs: 40 Years 
Later, Schlesinger indicated to Granma International that he had warned Kennedy that 
the invasion of Cuba would be a great fiasco. From a political, military, legal and 
moral standpoint, it was not a good idea.

Schlesinger added that President Kennedy agreed with him, but he had inherited the 
invasion plans from President Eisenhower, considered a military specialist. The 
political price of canceling the operation would have been considerable, he indicated.

He said that the conference would enrich the historical record of what he considers a 
sad episode and a deplorable tragedy. He praised the Cuban government for providing 
the documents.

In evaluating the current relations between the White House and Cuba, he referred to 
Clintons hopes to change U.S. policy towards Cuba, but not to the point of losing an 
electoral campaign in Florida. The current Bush administration has no interest in 
normalizing relations; on the contrary, its policies are more hostile.

conference in Havana

THE analysis carried out at the conference entitled Bay of Pigs, 40 Years Later, held 
in Havana with President Fidel Castro and experts from both countries in attendance, 
was termed as of vital significance for any future talks between the Cuban and U.S. 
governments.

Observers called the information shared by the two sides at the conference, with the 
aid of maps depicting the battle zones, as extraordinary and moving.

Harvard University Professor Jorge Dominguez stated at a March 23 press conference at 
the International Conference Center that the decision not to shoot at the U.S. 
destroyers located off the Cuban coastso as to avoid intensifying the 
confrontationevidenced a responsible attitude on Cubas part.

Thomas S. Blanton, head of the National Security Archive affiliated with George 
Washington University, summed up the contents of the four memoranda in that 
institutions possession.

One of those reports demonstrates how the Canadian government learned from the lessons 
of Cubas victory at the Bay of Pigs, given that the Canadian ambassador to Cuba at 
that time recommended establishing friendly relations with the island and avoiding 
interference in its internal affairs.

In Blantons opinion, the other documents reveal the schizophrenia of U.S. policy 
toward Cuba following the Bay of Pigs invasion. As an example, he mentioned the 
memorandum written by presidential aide Richard Goodwin, advocating that then Attorney 
General Robert Kennedy (John F. Kennedys brother) head up an operation which 
subsequently became Operation Mongoose.

Another document reveals the details of an encounter between Goodwin and Che Guevara 
in Montevideo, Uruguay, in which they discussed possible formulas for beginning a 
dialogue, in such a way that the two countries could coexist without abandoning their 
ideological positions.

On the Cuban side, Vice President José Ramón Fernández presented a report on 
operations at the Bay of Pigs, offering severe self-criticism of the errors committed.

Fernández added that although specialized Cuban agencies did not recommend 
declassifying this document, President Fidel Castro decided to do so. Fernández said 
that this reveals the transparency of the Cuban government in its effort to

 Greenpeace Founder McTaggart Dies

 ROME - David McTaggart, one of the founders of Greenpeace
 International, who piloted boats into the teeth of the French navy to
 disrupt nuclear testing, was killed Friday in a head-on car crash on a
 country road in central Italy. He was 68.

 Police said McTaggart was alone in his car. The driver of the other
 car also died and his wife was injured, police said. The accident
 happened in Umbria, about 20 miles from Perugia.
