These techniques can give us a realistic shot at the tremendous profit potential of IPOs, while enabling us, with vigilance and discipline, to reduce risk. Anyone heard about the Berkeley college student?
In the Chinese papers over the last few days they've been reporting an incident that happened to a Chinese UC Berkeley college student, who was using her cell phone to discuss playing some sort of videogame. The videogame involves placing explosives in various places in the game. Apparently, whithin minutes after completing the call, police (or other) officers showed up at her room and brought her in for questioning. She apparently brought the officers over to the friend's house to show them the videogame, proving that she was indeed talking about a videogame. Has anyone heard of this in the regular (ie, non-Chinese) press? The Chinese folks are of course up in arms about the apparent profiling this would imply, apparently ignoring the deeper implications. Britain's Office of Fair Trading on Friday fined Hasbro, the US toy maker, £4.95m ($7.68m) for price-fixing - the biggest penalty yet imposed under the new Competition Act, which came into force in March 2000. Hasbro, Britain's biggest toy and game manufacturer with a product range that includes Monopoly, Mr Potato Head, Action Man and My Little Pony. The OFT said Hasbro and 10 distributors broke competition law between early 2001 and July 2001 by entering into price-fixing agreements that prevented the distributors from selling Hasbro toys and games below Hasbro's list price without permission. No fines were imposed on the distributors because the OFT found the initiative to impose the prices was Hasbro's and the distributors had no choice but to accept them. The OFT said it had proposed fining Hasbro £9m but had cut the penalty by 45 per cent under its leniency programme, reflecting Hasbro's decision to co-operate fully in the investigation. Boston Attorney General Seeks to Make Freedom of Speech a Crime Activists and civil rights advocates nationwide are crying fascism at Boston Attorney General Tom Reilly and Assistant Attorney General Philip J. McGovern for procuring 43 indictments against 12 animal rights activists. The indictments allege that threats and acts of attempted extortion were made during public protests against the insurance company Marsh Inc. in Boston. However, in over 7 months of protests, at which police and private security guards were present, no arrests have been made at any demonstration to date. Now, more than 2 1/2 months since the last set of Marsh protests, the Attorney General is claiming crimes were committed at those same protests that continued for 7 months without incident. If these alleged 'crimes were so felonious, in fact if the Attorney General has any case at all, why were there zero arrests, zero citations, and zero police confrontations when the police were standing 5 feet away from the protesters? asks activist Steve Schure. Clearly the police didn't feel the protesters actions were illegal, private security didn't feel they were illegal - in fact the grand jury didn't even feel the protesters were doing anything illegal for 2 1/2 months. [The prosecution reportedly requested more time to conduct its investigation, as numerous earlier grand jury hearings did not produce the desired result.] The indictments do not even alleged any physical action - civil disobedience, vandalism, etc. - other than participation in public, vocal demonstrations, an action supposedly protected by the First Amendment of a Constitution the Attorney Generals are pledged to uphold and protect. Additionally, some of the indicted activists are believed never to have attended a protest against Marsh anywhere in the country; some of them are believed never to have attended a protest in Boston regarding any issue. Rather, the indictments seem to underscore a pattern of repression and harassment activists have experienced in the Boston area. Marsh, in Boston and other cities, has also sued many of the indicted individuals, among them those rumored to have never protested in Boston or against Marsh. Some have been called for depositions in as many as 5 cities and grilled for up to 7 hours with extremely invasive questions, including family details and their whereabouts. Marsh has demanded activists produce an outrageous list of discovery materials, including 'any computer you've used in the past year.' Some of the indicted activists have even had their apartment searched and trashed by authorities under the USA PATRIOT Act. Computers, TV's, documents and other items were confiscated. No receipt was left. Schure goes on, These indictments are clearly attempts by a frustrated corporate and political elite to scare activists into silence. Luckily, we are driven by injustice and will only fight harder as we come up against more of it. These charges are bogus, as will be shown in court. And the defendants will fight back with every offensive and defensive legal means possible, despite the Attorney General's championing the fight obliterating American civil liberties. In the end, the indicted individuals will be shown to uphold the law and civil rights - by exercising them - ten times over the Attorney General. Marsh is the insurance broker for Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), a product-testing laboratory with a long history of animal brutality, and unsafe and inaccurate testing. Imagine that in the cup of your hands you have some water, some floating solids and some gas. Imagine the whole system is under pressure. Now try to open one of your fingers in such a way that you release only the gas, without letting any solid or liquid squirt out. I really doubt that any device made by the human race could do this task - and keep on doing it for some 70 years. This is the magnificent job that your anal sphincter does some 10 times per day, without fail. The proctologist, Dr. W. C. Bornemeier, wrote in his admiration of the anal sphincter, ...It apparently can tell whether its owner is alone or with someone, whether standing up or sitting down, and whether its owner has his pants on or off. There are two BofA buildings on either side of 11th Street. One is housing a BofA branch with numerous ATMs outside. That building is indeed clearly marked as a BofA building. But that's not the building in question. The building in question is the one across 11th, which has its building entrance on Market next to a ground-level convenience store. While the ground level of that building houses stores, the remainder of the building is occupied by BofA's processing center. The CO is metal-plated pacbel building on Folsom and 2nd. Well, of course there is more than one CO in San Francisco. The CO closed to the mystery building is the CO on Mc Coppin. I've removed algebra.com from the SSZ backbone feed as this violates the -entire- agreement of the CDR. He -may- stop forwarding SSZ traffic to -his- subscribers but he may -not- refuse to pass it on to other backbone subscribers he feeds. A couple of book questions...(one of them about Completeness)
Howdy, I just picked up The Future of the Electronic Marketplace by D. Leebaert (ISBN 0-262-62132-0). Anybody who has read it care to comment? It's a MIT Press book and the little bit of skimming I've done it seems pretty interesting. Published in '99. With regard to completeness, I have Godel's paper (On Formally Undecidable Propositions of Principia Mathematica and Related Systems, K. Godel, ISBN 0-486-66980-7 (Dover), $7 US) and if somebody happens to know the section where he defines completeness I'll be happy to share it. I've never read the original work and it's not on my immediate read list. It's not listed in the index either. I looked in the 'Complete Works' book at the local bookstore but they only had V. 3 and it wasn't in there (or at least I couldn't find it in the time I had avail.). The CDR as a Cliological experiment
I've made it no secret that my primary purpose in supporting the CDR as a distributed network of remailers was to create an environment to demonstrate the xenophobic behavior of individuals, a cliological experiment in human psychology. It has behaved just as I predicted it would (and not at all like the CACL folks predict such a ensemble will act, if anything it has proven time and time again that even they don't follow their own preaching.). The list was originally created as a single mailing list, at some point the original list was moderated by its operator. As a result Igor and I created the CDR so that no one person or site would ever have that sort of control ever again. Critical to the agreement was that no participant of the CDR backbone would filter -any- traffic on the backbone. Free speech being considered a critical component for any realistic discussion in a modern society. I've always held that this is a idealistic and short sighted view. That in fact such views as 'democracy' (which I heartily support by the way) are in fact counter-intuitive and run contrary to human nature. Over the years since then we've seen the backbone grow to something like seven (7) nodes in the US and several independent lists in other countries. As time progressed we've seen each of the nodes develop a distinct 'culture' with no indication that 'free speech' was really what very many people wanted. We've seen individuals (or small groups) mount both open and covert attacks on the various 'free speech' nodes in hopes of shutting them down. In other words, it is human nature for people to form 'tribes' or zaibatsu. That in fact, this aspect of human nature is what drives the vast majority of conflict in any and all human cultures. As the 'reach' of each culture expands the conflict increases. It's further clear that technology and globalization don't mediate these effects, if anything they may in fact exacerbate them. As a result we see actions like Igor Chudov's at algebra.com who act unilaterally to limit such speech. Igor filters all traffic from SSZ but he has never asked to be removed from the SSZ feed (even though I've asked several times about the host of bounces that I receive - that rather speaks for itself I think with regard to cooperation). The vast majority of people are not interested in 'getting along' or 'live and let live', they are interested in creating an environment where the acceptable views and activities are limited (usually pretty severely). While the ground level of that building houses stores, the remainder of the building is occupied by BofA's processing center. The CO is metal-plated pacbel building on Folsom and 2nd. Well, of course there is more than one CO in San Francisco. The CO closed to the mystery building is the CO on Mc Coppin. As I pointed out in my original email, you can see the frame through the windows. FYI, Mc Coppin is *a lot* closer to 11th Market than is 2nd and Folsom. --Lucky

I've removed algebra.com from the SSZ backbone feed as this violates the -entire- agreement of the CDR. He -may- stop forwarding SSZ traffic to -his- subscribers but he may -not- refuse to pass it on to other backbone subscribers he feeds. Ideally the other CDR backbone nodes would stop feeding algebra.com as well, but I'll leave that up to your own decision. Actions speak louder than words. Bottom line, we have another active attempt at filternig the CDR backbone. I'll also be sure to post Igor's comment below on the SSZ page with the appropriate commentary. A couple of book questions...(one of them about Completeness)
Howdy, I just picked up The Future of the Electronic Marketplace by D. Leebaert (ISBN 0-262-62132-0). Anybody who has read it care to comment? It's a MIT Press book and the little bit of skimming I've done it seems pretty interesting. Published in '99. With regard to completeness, I have Godel's paper (On Formally Undecidable Propositions of Principia Mathematica and Related Systems, K. Godel, ISBN 0-486-66980-7 (Dover), $7 US) and if somebody happens to know the section where he defines completeness I'll be happy to share it. I've never read the original work and it's not on my immediate read list. It's not listed in the index either. I looked in the 'Complete Works' book at the local bookstore but they only had V. 3 and it wasn't in there (or at least I couldn't find it in the time I had avail.).
