Israel's role in China's new warplane By David Isenberg The recent unveiling (sort of) of China's first domestically designed (sort of) fighter jet was the culmination of a long saga of international military-hardware wheeling and dealing that has seen US-designed or -funded high-tech weaponry fall into the hands of potential military rivals. The showpiece of many years' work, dating back to the late 1980s, recently happened - albeit unobserved - when China confirmed the existence of, but did not unveil, the Jian-10 fighter jet. It had been reported that the J-10 (F-10 being the export version, using North Atlantic Treaty Organization designation) would be shown in public for the first time during the fourth China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China 2002) held in Zhuhai in southern Guangdong province from November 4-10, but the plane did not appear. The J-10 is a multi-role single-engine and single-seat tactical fighter, with a combat radius of 1,000 kilometers. Although billed as a domestically produced fighter, in truth the J-10 could not have happened without the help of other countries, especially Israel. The program began in the late 1980s and is thought to be based on an Israeli design. It contains Israeli and Russian avionics, and is powered by Russian engines. Chinese engineers developed the J-10 from a single F-16 provided by Pakistan, and with assistance from Israeli engineers associated with Israel's US-financed Lavi fighter program, which was canceled in 1987, according to the Federation of American Scientists website. The Lavi was based on the US F-16 and built with US$1.3 billion in aid from Washington. In 1983, when US support for the Lavi commenced, the program was opposed vigorously by the Defense Department, partly because of re-export concerns. An early supporter of the Lavi was George Shultz, then secretary of state in the administration of US president Ronald Reagan. Shultz would later label his advocacy of the program a costly mistake. Only in early 1995 did the US government make public its concerns about Israel's Lavi-related technology re-exports to China. David Lari, director general of Israel's Ministry of Defense, acknowledged in an Associated Press interview that some technology on aircraft had been sold to China and that some Israeli companies may not have clean hands. Yet China's acquisition of the Russian Su-27, after China had attempted for years to develop the J-10 aircraft with equivalent technology to perform similar functions, is seen by some experts as a sign that China lacks confidence in its domestic industrial capabilities. Though it has never been certain precisely what specific technologies and systems Israel provided, it was reported that the Jian-10's radar and fire-control system is the Israeli-made ELM-2021 system, which can simultaneously track six air targets and lock on to the four most threatening targets for destruction. In December 1991, US intelligence officials announced that Israel planned to open a government-coordinated and -sponsored arms office in China. Given what the Israelis had to offer, and what the Chinese needed, it was most likely that a transfer of avionics and other technologies developed in the Lavi program would ensue, since there was a void in the Chinese avionics and fire-control system capability due to the 1989 termination of a US-Chinese program in response to Tiananmen Square. China and Israel started collaboration in the early 1980s and full-scale cooperation was under way officially by 1984. As neither China nor Israel was capable of developing the propulsion system required by the J-10, in 1991 China acquired the AI31F turbofan engine from Russia for incorporation into the J-10 fighter. This engine is also used in the Su-27 air-superiority fighter that Chinese acquired from Russia. As the performance of the AL31F engine is significantly better than that of the American PW1120 originally slated for the Lavi, it may be anticipated that the performance of the J-10 will be accordingly enhanced. Built by the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Corp, the J-10 attempts to rival current fourth-generation Western fighters. China has inked a 10-year deal with the Russian engine maker SRPC Salut for 300 Al-31F engines for its J-10 program and will begin production of the jets next year. The plane is said to have capabilities similar to the Su-27, the Russian MiG-29 and the US F-16 fighter jets, but with an estimated cost of less than $10 million, it could rival other jet makers on the international market. In March 1997, despite official denials from Israeli officials, the US Office of Naval Intelligence in its unclassified Worldwide Challenges to Naval Strike Warfare restated more strongly than it had the previous year its belief that US-derived technology from the canceled Israeli Lavi fighter was being used on China's new F-10 fighter. The collapse of the World Trade Center in New York after the twin towers were struck by hijacked airliners accounted for 71 of last year's 142 law enforcement killings, the FBI (news - web sites) reported Monday. The 72nd victim was a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officer who died when a plane commandeered by terrorists crashed in a Pennsylvania field. Overshadowed by the enormity of those numbers is another statistic: 70 other law enforcement officers were killed by criminals around the country in 2001, the highest number since 1997 and a 37 percent increase over the 51 slain in 2000. Law enforcement is a high-risk occupation, the FBI report says. The men and women who serve the public in this way place themselves in danger as a matter of routine. Still, the nonterrorism deaths are far below those recorded in the 1970s, when it was common for more than 200 officers to die violently or in accidents every year, said Craig Floyd, chairman of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in Washington. That number for 2001 would be about 148. Fewer police are being killed in the line of duty than there were 30 years ago, Floyd said. We've got more police on the street than we've ever had. They have better training and they're no longer outgunned by the criminals. The statistics, gleaned from 9,688 law enforcement agencies across the country, show that: _Police are most likely to be shot to death with a handgun. All but nine of the nonterrorism murders involved a firearm. _Night is the most dangerous time for a cop and Friday the most dangerous day. Sunday is the least violent. _The South continues to lead the nation in law enforcement deaths, with 281 since 1992 more than twice as many as the next-highest region. Twenty-nine of the 2001 killings happened in the South. _Two-thirds of police assailants had prior criminal records or arrests. _Accidents claimed 78 law enforcers' lives, 64 involving car or motorcycle crashes. One Texas wildlife officer was run over by his own car after stopping to check on a roadside domestic dispute. Of the nonterror cases, 73 suspects were identified and 52 arrested, although the statistics do not show whether they were convicted of a crime. Ten suspects were shot and killed, two by officers who later died themselves. Five police assailants killed themselves. Thirty-eight of the 61 officers killed by guns in 2001 were wearing body armor, but in all but one case, the bullet found a vulnerable area such as an officer's head or armhole. The 142 law enforcement killings occurred in 29 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, which had six. City police departments accounted for 105 of the fallen officers, with 24 working for county or sheriff's departments. Three state police officers and four federal law enforcement agents were killed in 2001. Class war veteran Ron Sakolsky has always been a fearless pathfinder in the wilds of revolutionary culture and cultural revolution. In the last decade alone, he has co-edited three important, stimulating anthologies on some of the histories and cultures which weave through and orbit around the anti-authoritarian underground -- Gone to Croatan: Origins of North American Dropout Culture (Autonomedia, 1993); Sounding Off! Music as Subversion/ Resistance/Revolution (Autonomedia, 1995); and Seizing the Airwaves: A Free Radio Handbook (AK Press, 1998). Sakolsky's projects seem inspired by the idea that positions of heterodoxy and autonomy are the best revenge against a world violently dominated by the mediocrity and fundamentalism of reactionaries. He keys into vital creative experiments and radical folklore that speaks directly to the concerns of revolutionary anti-capitalists and anti-statists, and takes the reader by the elbow to point out new sites of alignment, cross-pollination, and synthesis in a way that a friendly seasoned bird-watcher might take a city slicker for a walk in the woods. This time around, Sakolsky turns his attentions towards surrealist activities first instigated by a circle of young Chicago Wobblies in 1966 and which continue to this day (my review copy of Surrealist Subversions came with flyers dated October 2002 that railed against the corporate media's attacks on Amiri Baraka and the upcoming U.S. invasion of Iraq). Like anarchism, surrealism suffers from layers of misrepresentation shoveled upon it by corporate mass media and ignorant academic pontification. Today's anarchists are no more white college boys with trust funds sporting black bandana masks than they were the wild-eyed bomb-throwers with thick unkempt beards seen in so many Haymarket-era editorial cartoons. What actually defines surrealism is a burning commitment to the principles of liberty, desire, and rage against the slave-drivers of Capital, State, Church, Patriarchy, and miserabilizing authoritarian bureaucracies of all forms, a position that has been endorsed by surrealists worldwide since 1924 and one that many anarchists have felt comfortable supporting in their collaborations with surrealists. As explored in Sakolsky's collection, that connection is more fundamental for surrealists in the U.S. since they have a special affinity with the dreams and dynamite of the I.W.W.'s revolutionary unionism, an influence that becomes obvious in the surrealists' celebration of the Chicago Idea legacy. Basically, the Chicago Idea among anarchists and revolutionary syndicalists of the late nineteenth century stressed spontaneous rank-and-file direct action as the alternative to laborist reformism and the Stirnerite anarcho-egoism of loners like Benjamin Tucker. As articulated in the 1883 Pittsburgh Manifesto of the International Working People's Association and the preamble to the 1905 I.W.W. constitution, the Chicago Idea called for the destruction of capitalism and the State through a federation of autonomous revolutionary councils of self-emancipated workers and subproletariat (the I.W.P.A. had organized the unemployed in Midwestern cities during the economic depression of 1884). The pre-World War I Chicago Idea revolutionary unionists were also dedicated to fostering the growth of internationalist working-class revolutionary culture through parades, music, dances, games, poetry readings, gun clubs (!), amateur theatrical productions and potluck cookouts. The kaliedoscopic flair with which the surrealists adopted the old Chicago Idea sixty or seventy years later provides this anthology with countless impressions and expressions of spontaneous uprisings in thought and deed that innovatively link radical politics to oppositional popular culture on dozens of fronts and with an endless array of weapons and tactics. As if to underline this point, Sakolsky presents the material collected in Surrealist Subversions according to themes of theory, critique, and action, rather than using a simple chronological format. The first big theory section reads surrealism in the context of Total Nonconformism, Insubordination, Revolution as the Way to a Non-Repressive Civilization; the second segment offers surrealist critiques of neoliberal globalization, work, patriarchy, whiteness, religion, the traditional Left, and the capitalist destruction of the environment; and the third surrealist action section looks at Social Transformation as Festival with chapters on revolutionary poetry in everyday life, direct action, humor, blues and jazz, outsider artists, history, and playful surrealist group experiments. Personally, I can't say if this carefully-calibrated road map is successful or not because I just picked up the book and read random parts for a couple weeks before writing this review. Perspective: A tech tool for future tyrants? By Tom Giovanetti December 4, 2002, 4:00 AM PT A healthy distrust of government was a hallmark of this country's founding, and has protected us from much harm over the last 226 years. The founders may have disagreed about many things, but they all agreed that limited government power was a key to freedom. Distrust of central government power was among the primary reasons for the designs of both our system of separation of powers and our system of federalism. The founders distrusted government because they had firsthand experience with tyrants. They had seen that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Note the logical order in the phase. It isn't the corruption that comes first--it is power that comes first. When power is amassed and available, corruption comes as a result. So the trick is to limit power up-front--to prevent the amassing of too much power by any single person, or any single agency, or department, or government. Another famous quotation, knowledge is power, adorns (in its Latin form) the logo of the Total Information Awareness project at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. A visit to the TIA Web site will take your breath away. Its name, slogan and logo reek of Orwellian elements. In fact, the Web site looks like either a parody Web site, or every civil libertarian's nightmare. But it is not a parody. Nor is this a simple case of unwise choices of agency name and logo design. Rather, the name, logo, slogan and Web site contents are all a pretty accurate description of the intentions behind the TIA. Distrust of government has also been a hallmark of conservatism in the United States. Yet today, we have a conservative president and a Republican-controlled Congress advocating and defending a program that says it will amass a vast database of information on the American people. Even some conservative organizations are telling us that we have nothing to fear from the total information system. It is a fact that the worst violators of Web site privacy policies are federal government Web sites. It is particularly odd for conservatives to be defending this plan--particularly supply-side conservatives. For supply-side logic, which states that supply creates its own demand, does not apply exclusively to tax policy. If you build it, they will come. If you build it, they will use it. If we allow a great amount of financial capital, or bandwidth, or rubber bands, someone will find a creative use for it. That's good. But if we amass an enormous database of the personal information of American citizens, someone will find a creative use for it, too. The problem is that we cannot assume that the people who later use the tool will have the same integrity and assumptions as those who created the tool. Consider this: It is a fact that the Clinton administration used the Internal Revenue Service to harass its political opponents, and that they obtained classified FBI files on their perceived enemies. Both were illegal. Both were supposedly made impossible by legal firewalls. It is a fact that the worst violators of Web site privacy policies are federal government Web sites. It is a fact that information is routinely shared between federal departments, despite the fact that such information sharing is illegal. It is a fact that the Social Security number was legally never supposed to become a de facto national identification number, but when is the last time you went a week without someone asking you for your Social Security number? It is a fact that the Internal Revenue Service has, within the past five years, on more than one occasion released tax information to the public that was legally private and protected. To those who say it will be impossible to use the database to violate the privacy of citizens, well, it's just a matter of who is sitting at the console. In my own state of Texas, we were sold on a state lottery plan to fund education, but not a dime of the money was ever specifically earmarked for education. In my own county, several years ago, voters approved a bond election for a specific purpose, but county officials arbitrarily decided to use the money for some other purpose instead. You can't trust governments to do what they promise. You can't trust them to police themselves. You can't assume that, because something is not supposed to happen, it won't happen. So what you do is refuse to allow government to amass power. You don't let them develop the tools that can be used by future tyrants. To those who say that safeguards will be built into the system, I say that the government has a pretty poor track record of following such safeguards. National Indonesian Embassy Confirms Philippines Police Tortured Al Ghozi 29 Nov 2002 23:28:44 WIB TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines has confirmed that the Philippine Police tortured Fathur Rahman Al Ghozi, an Indonesian citizen who has been arrested for his involvement in a bombing. Endang Pramana, an information officer at the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines spoke with Tempo News Room by phone on Friday (29/11). Because of this violation of human rights, the Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines, Suratmin, has officially protested to the Philippines government. Pramana said a source in Jakarta informed the Indonesian Embassy about this case, adding that he did not know exactly who the source is. Responding to the information, the embassy sent Consular Chief Chairul Natadisastra to meet Ghozi last September. During the meeting, Ghozi confirmed the torturing. Tamsil Linrung, another Indonesian citizen arrested by the Philippines Police, has also confirmed that Ghozi was tortured. Ghozi told Tamsil Linrung that he was tortured during an interrogation by US intelligence agents and members of the Philippines Police. Security officers from these two countries, according to Tamsil, kicked and hit Ghozi and then threatened to use electric shock treatment. During the interrogation, according to Tamsil, Ghozi was forced to admit that Agus Dwikarna was involved in the bombing at the residence of the Philippine Ambassador in Jakarta as well the bombing action of an electric train in Manila in December 2000. I was forced to admit this. Even they threatened to make me shock from electricity, said Tamsil, quoting what Ghozi had said. After the torture, Ghozi said he could not walk for several days. American al-Qaida operatives can be killed Secret finding signed by Bush gives CIA authority, officials say Associated Press WASHINGTON -- American citizens working for al-Qaida overseas can legally be targeted and killed by the CIA under President Bush's rules for the war on terrorism, U.S. officials say. The authority to kill U.S. citizens is granted under a secret finding signed by the president after the Sept. 11 attacks that directs the CIA to covertly attack al-Qaida anywhere in the world. The authority makes no exception for Americans, so permission to strike them is understood rather than specifically described, officials said. These officials said the authority will be used only when other options are unavailable. Military-like strikes will take place only when law enforcement and internal security efforts by allied foreign countries fail, the officials said. Capturing and questioning al-Qaida operatives is preferable, even more so if an operative is a U.S. citizen, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Any decision to strike an American will be made at the highest levels, perhaps by the president. U.S. officials say few Americans are working with al-Qaida but they have no specific estimates. The CIA already has killed one American under this authority, although U.S. officials maintain he wasn't the target. On Nov. 3, a CIA-operated Predator drone fired a missile that destroyed a carload of suspected al-Qaida operatives in Yemen. The target of the attack, a Yemeni named Qaed Salim Sinan al-Harethi, was the top al-Qaida operative in that country. Efforts by Yemeni authorities to detain him had previously failed. But the CIA didn't know a U.S. citizen, Yemeni-American Kamal Derwish, was in the car. He died, along with al-Harethi and four other Yemenis. American authorities have alleged that Derwish was the leader of an al-Qaida cell in suburban Buffalo, N.Y. Most of the alleged members of the cell were arrested and charged with supporting terrorists, but Derwish was not accused of any crime in American courts. Family members in Buffalo say they have yet to be contacted by the U.S. government about Derwish's death, which they learned about through media reports. Mohamed Albanna, vice president of the American Muslim Council's Buffalo chapter, urged federal authorities to confirm the death. It's just a matter of common respect for the family here. After all, they are U.S. citizens. He added that Derwish has not been tried and has not been found guilty, so, in that sense, he's still an innocent American who was killed. That's what the law states. The Bush administration sees it differently. In killing him, the administration defined Derwish as an enemy combatant, the equivalent of a U.S. citizen who fights with the enemy on a battlefield, officials said. Under this legal definition, experts say, his constitutional rights are nullified and he can be killed outright. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, supported this policy. A U.S. citizen terrorist will kill you just like somebody from another country. While officials believe only a small number of U.S. citizens went through Osama bin Laden's camps, Americans have been associated with all levels of al-Qaida. This includes high-level operative Wadih El Hage, a Lebanese-American who was convicted in connection with the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa. We got a million of em' U.S. considered using bats to bomb Tokyo, files show William Hollingworth Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at 09:29 JST LONDON U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt was so frustrated with the U.S. military's early inability to bomb the Japanese mainland in World War II that he looked into using bats to do the job, according to newly unclassified diaries of a senior British intelligence officer. The U.S. government, which was hampered by distance in its attempt to bomb Japan in the early stages of the war, reportedly examined a scheme to release bats strapped with explosives close to Japan in order to cause damage to Tokyo. The scheme was detailed in the World War II diaries of Guy Liddell, head of counter-espionage in the British domestic intelligence service MI5. The diaries were released last week. According to Liddell, Roosevelt suggested that the Office of Strategic Service (OSS), the forerunner of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, look into acquiring large quantities of bats from Mexico and strapping small incendiaries to their feet and wings. The creatures would be released close to Tokyo so that they could cause as much damage as possible. The diaries did not say how the scheme would operate in practice. Liddell said although officials were not quite sure whether Roosevelt's suggestion was tongue in cheek, they explored the plan and consulted experts on the most suitable type of bats for the job. The plan apparently never got off the drawing board but officials and Roosevelt did mull it over on a number of occasions following the initial suggestion, according to Liddell's diaries. In one of his diary entries for December 1943, which has been seen by Kyodo News, Liddell recounts a conversation he had with a London-based OSS official, who had been asked by the head of the OSS, Bill Donovan, to examine the bats scheme. Liddell wrote, The suggestion put forward by the president was that OSS should collect large quantities of bats known to exist in certain caves in Mexico. These bats should be put into crates and shipped to Seattle. They were to be taken from there to some point within flying distance of Tokyo where they would be put on board aeroplanes. Attached to the feet and wings of the bats were to be small incendiaries. The bats were to be released from the aeroplanes near Tokyo, the idea being that they would fly down the chimneys and that Tokyo would go up in flames. John Crossland, a World War II historian who has examined the Liddell diaries, said the plan to use bats was probably tongue in cheek, but it reflected the frustration among U.S. military planners. Americans were not in bombing range of Japan's home islands and that's why I could imagine such a scheme being suggested, Crossland said. He added that it was only after the U.S. military captured Saipan in 1943 and built a runway on the island that it could unleash B-29 bombers on Japan. I have accounts on dozens of web sites and online services, and all of them take only a pass WORD. I suggest you climb out of the ivory tower and visit the real world for a few days. I think you'll find that there are a lot worse problems in security than choosing and memorizing super-high-entropy pass phrases. Security is essentially nonexistent today.

Hate Leaflets Distributed in San Fernando Valley Neighborhoods (Van Nuys, CA) -- Los Angeles Police say they are investigating the distribution of Anti-Semitic hate leaflets found in a Van Nuys neighborhood. A police spokesperson referred to the distribution of the material believed to have taken place between Monday evening and yesterday morning, a hate incident. The Jewish Defense League is urging the LAPD and FBI to investigate the incident as a hate crime. Password security
I've been thinking about and investigating the issue of password management. Passwords are the weak link in any computer security system. The problem is that following the standard recommendations -- choose long, random passwords, and never recycle them for use with multiple accounts -- quickly overloads the memory capacity of all but the most dedicated. Here are some solutions that I've been investigating, intended to be practical for unsophisticated computer users. I'd like your comments. 1. Use Diceware (www.diceware.com) to generate passphrases. The way it works is that you use physical randomness (rolling dice) to generate groups of five numbers in the range 1-6. For each group of five numbers you then look up the corresponding word in a list of 7000+ of the shortest English words. Your passphrase is the sequence of words thus generated, separated by spaces. I have found that the passphrases generated using this method are much easier to memorize than random alphanumeric strings of equal entropy. You get a shorter sequence of symbols by choosing from a larger -- and semantically rich -- alphabet (the list of 7000+ words). 2. Use something like Bruce Schneier's Password Safe (now an open source project at http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net) to keep track of your passwords, so that you only absolutely, positively have to remember one. 3. The problem now is that Password Safe only runs on the notoriously insecure Windows operating systems. Even if it were to be ported to something more secure (Linux, *BSD), there are still plenty of security bugs found every day even on these systems, and it's not inconceivable that someone hacking into your system could catch your master password as you type it into Password Safe. I'm very uncomfortable with the idea of leaving my password database on any network-connected machine. This leaves two possibilities: 3a. Keep your password database as a handwritten list on physical paper. This is secure from network attacks, but physical security is minimal. 3b. Use a Palm OS-based PDA with PDA Defense (www.pdadefense.com) installed to store your password database. I'm not sure yet if you can use that to encrypt important databases, or if it's aimed more at securing the entire device. If the latter, use a Palm OS port of Password Safe (doesn't yet exist :-( ), or use one of the encrypted PDA password managers at Tucows.com. Backup the encrypted password database onto a removable expansion card, NOT on your PC. What are your thoughts? Am I off-base here? Are there better solutions I've missed? -- Martin Crandall

I've just been made aware of a bug in my CDR code that causes MIME-encoded mail that uses the (rare) Content-Type: multipart/mixed to get dropped into the bit bucket. I'll fix it soon, but in the mean time please post in plain ASCII. You should post in plain ascii anyhow since any MIME gets demimed (the demime program being the problem in this case) but I know that some mailers don't make it easy and some people post from environments where MIME encoding is the norm and forget to switch. WEDNESDAY a.m. December 4, 2002 Rough Patch by David Nichols It now looks clear -- at least somewhat clear! -- that the market is entering a corrective period. After 8 straight weeks of gains, the bullish forces have at last run out of steam. Yet technically the uptrend has still done "nothing wrong". It still looks healthy with an objective glance. Looking at a 60 minute chart, a pattern of higher highs and lower lows is still apparent -- and that's by definition bullish. The advance phases are outpacing the decline phases, and you can't ask for anything more than that from an uptrend. Another thing propping up the bullish case is the fact that bonds have not confirmed the latest move down. In fact, much to my surprise, bonds were down yesterday. If there's one thing we've learned over the past months, it's that you can't trust a move in stocks unless it's confirmed by bonds. Someday that relationship may peter out, but it's not reasonable to assume that the moment for this is right now. There are definitely a few worrying signs for the stock market. It looks like stocks may now hit the skids for a while, maybe a week or two. Sentiment is signaling a decline phase is imminent, as indicated by our sentiment dashboard (below). Once a decline phase starts, it's imprudent to pre-judge how far it's capable of going. There is always, always an element of surprise to how far a move can go, as news flow is always capable of adding potential energy to a trend. It also looks suspiciously like my "parabolic pattern" has triggered to the downside on the 60 minute chart of the OEX. This pattern holds that after a parabolic, "blow-off" top, the resulting counter-move triggers in three predictable moves. In this case, we should see a leg 1 down -- which is forming now -- then a counter leg 2 up, followed by a larger leg 3 down. Interestingly, this parabolic pattern can be seen in all charts in all timeframes, as it's a recurring output pattern in the chaotic, non-linear dynamic system that we call the stock market. In another incredibly complex chaotic, non-dynamic system -- the weather -- certain initial input parameters will trigger a very predictable output pattern. This is why the 3-day weather forecast is so often accurate these days. The markets are no different. In fact, I would argue -- vociferously -- that the markets are a natural phenomenon, every bit as much as the weather. They are a product of natural forces, which in this case happen to be the emotions and perceptions of tens of millions of human beings. Changes in human perception and emotion on a massive scale create price movement in just the same way changes in atmospheric pressure create wind and weather. It's just not as easy to quantify, as our data-gathering facilities for market sentiment aren't nearly as advanced as weather data. But this is going to change. Everybody thinks I'm crazy when I say that forecasting the market with an incredibly high degree of accuracy is not only possible, but inevitable. I'm obsessively working towards this goal every day. Remember when they used to make fun of weather people? And it's true: weather forecasting used to be pretty bad. But they're not making fun anymore. The 3 to 5 day forecasts are now incredibly accurate. What happened? Computer modeling and data collection got much more sophisticated, and in turn the accuracy of weather forecasting got much better. Weather is a chaotic, non-linear system that is highly dependent on initial conditions -- just like the markets. Once triggered, both these systems act in predictable ways. And just like weather, the shorter the forecast, the more accurate it is. There are so many potential inputs that can crop up later to affect a longer-term forecast. Okay, enough of these crazy ramblings. Let's get back to planet earth. The parabolic pattern is telling us that we should see a counter-move soon, pushing the markets back up. But it's likely to be a tepid move back up that won't exceed the earlier highs. This will be an excellent time to get out of bullish positions, and perhaps even take a few speculative bearish positions. I am looking to exit our bullish Rydex positions into this counter-move back up, to get us better exit prices. In my opinion, it's not time to go hog wild for the downside. This is likely just a correction in a much larger uptrend. You are mixing up what Godel says about proving consistency within a system, and his incompleteness theorem. Godel most certainly DOES prove that mathematics is incomplete. To write a string down to feed to your truth engine is one thing, to be able to write it in either the 'true' or 'false' list is something entirely different. Nobody cares about the first part, they care a great deal about the second. And no it won't be 'true for some, false for some'. The actual content of the symbols is of -no interst-. We are trying to determine if the string is legitimate within the axioms and their grammer, not it's absolute context sensitive result. Here you are wrong. The content of the symbols is very important. The study of mathematical logic, including Godel, depends on comparing semantic truth (validity in models) to syntactic truth (provability). You are only dealing with the syntax. Completeness means that every _valid_ formula can be _proved_. The only connection I see between completeness and what you said about writing down every true string is this: If the set of valid formulas in a system is not recursively enumerable, then the system cannot be complete. This is true of arithmetic. But this is not the definition of complete. There are systems that are incomplete for other reasons, even over finite models. And there are infinite systems (e.g. the first-order logic) that are complete, but they are not sufficient to describe all of arithmetic.

Parabolas are most desired when a broad range of frequencies are simultaneously being received and need to be brought into a common crisp focus (e.g., handling chromatic aberration in optical telescopes). Secondaries and corrector plates, as are common to handle field flattening, were considered too complex for the application. At these frequencies and reflector size the difference of figure between a parabola and a sphere is relatively small though not insignificant. I believe the engineers were able to introduce balloon distortions approaching a parabolic figure. In the end the engineers found other imperfections of the antenna and feed predominated. steve

I suppose that if it's not blinded, or at least functionally anonymous, like you'd get with statistically-tested streaming cash, it's not *that* bearer, but, hey, that's just *my* opinion, right? :-). I would assume that anything that has accounts with client names on them is probably not bearer, either, though Mark Twain did something quite like that. Which, not coincidentally, brings us back to the loading problem. Most of us who think about these things have gotten to the point that Doug Barnes got to with his Mondex talk at the FC97 rump-session: that is, you need a popular internet payment system to collateralize/load whatever bearer certificate you issue, and the faster that settles, the better. You can even do multi-cast. As you move from AP to AP you re-create that pipe (hopefully using cryptographically secured tools of course) end-to-end pipe. CDR administrivia
I've just been made aware of a bug in my CDR code that causes MIME-encoded mail that uses the (rare) Content-Type: multipart/mixed to get dropped into the bit bucket. I'll fix it soon, but in the mean time please post in plain ASCII. You should post in plain ascii anyhow since any MIME gets demimed (the demime program being the problem in this case) but I know that some mailers don't make it easy and some people post from environments where MIME encoding is the norm and forget to switch.
