Eat pizza and lose weight?

2002-12-30 Thread jimpeach
Hi !

If you're like me, you've tried EVERYTHING to lose
weight. I know how you feel - the special diets,
miracle pills, and fancy exercise equipment never helped
me lose a pound either. It seemed like the harder I tried,
the bigger I got, until I heard about a product called
Power Diet Plus.

You're probably thinking to yourself, Oh geez, not another
miracle diet pill! Like you, I was skeptical at first, but
my sister swore it helped her lose 23 pounds in just two weeks,
so I told her I'd give it a shot. I mean, there was nothing
to lose except a lot of weight! Let me tell you, it was
the best decision I've ever made. Period. Six months later,
as I'm writing this message to you, I've gone from 355 pounds
to 210 pounds, and I haven't changed my exercise routine or diet
at all. Yes, I still eat pizza, and lots of it!

I was so happy with the results that I contacted the manufacturer
and got permission to resell it - at a BIG discount. I want
to help other people lose weight like I did, because it
does so much for your self-esteem, not to mention your health.
I give you my personal pledge that Power Diet Plus
absolutely WILL WORK FOR YOU. If it doesn't, you can return it
any time for a full refund.

If you are frustrated with trying other products, not having
any success, and just not getting the results you were promised,
then I recommend the only product that worked for me - POWER DIET
PLUS.

You're probably asking yourself, Ok, so how does this stuff
actually work?

Power Diet Plus contains Lipotropic fat burners which are
scientifically proven to increase metabolism and cause rapid
weight loss. No hocus pocus in these pills - just RESULTS, RESULTS,
RESULTS!!

Here is the bottom line ...

I can help you lose 10-15 pounds per week naturally, without
exercising and without having to eat rice cakes all day.
Just try it for one month - there's nothing to lose, and everything
to gain. You will lose weight fast - GUARANTEED. That is my
pledge to you.

Hello,This program brought me $35,500 !

2002-12-30 Thread Jonny
Get $2 from Your Mail box TOMORROW !!!

You would be amazed every time you open your mail box, a bunch of $10 there!!

Follow the very simple instructions below and in a few days you should have around
$20,000
as the response rate will be HUGE due to the tiny investment required and the MASSIVE
potential. We believe the return rate is currently as good as 80% !

You could do this as often as you liked, I'll explain how simple it is.

===AVAILABLE REPORTS ===

ORDER REPORT:

Notes: Always send $ 10 cash (US CURRENCY) for
report.

Checks are NOT accepted.

Make sure the cash is concealed by wrapping it in at least 2
sheets of paper. On one of those sheets of paper, write the
NAME of the Report you are ordering.,
YOUR E-MAIL ADDERSS and your name and postal
address. (*note: Do not forget Your E-Mail Address)

PLACE YOUR ORDER FOR REPORT NOW:

REPORT : The Insider's Secret To Sending Bulk E-Mail
On The Net

Order Report from: and send $10 dollars to :-

NEXT DUE : Y. Nakajima
 170-10 Simoyakiri, Matudo,
  Chiba, Japan 271-0096

Who is currently the next person in line.

Next, move this address :-

PENDING :- S. Gavrilenko
  Dnepropetrovskaya, doroga str. #96/63
  Odessa, Ukraine, 65069

up into the NEXT DUE slot and put your own address into the PENDING slot.
Now send the mail to as many prospects as you feel appropiate. Having done this once,
you'll see how easy it is. ONLY SEND to the first person on the list. And DONT cheat !

If you send to 50 prospects with yourself in NEXT DUE, you might see $200.
If you follow the instructions correctly, then in ONE or TWO days (it's fast!)
you should recieve letters from around 2000 people ! $20,000 !

With only 2 names in your branch you can expect it to happen VERY quickly !

You may do very well, you may only do reasonably well, but you KNOW you will
get your ten dollars back !!

Thats only ONE reply from around 25000 with your name in NEXT DUE, isnt it ?

What would happen if you mailed 500 prospects ?

You can do this again, and again, and again

AGAIN, DO NOT CHEAT. IF YOUR BRANCH is BROKEN YOU WONT
GET ANYTHING NEAR THE RETURN !!

This is not a chain letter. This is Order Report for $10. You can refer to title 18,
Section 1302 of the
Postal and Lottery Code.

Please add your comments before resending !

:- YOUR comment here..
It's only $10 what can it hurt.

My name is Mitchell. My wife, Jody and I live in Chicago.
I am an accountant with a major U.S. Corporation and I
make pretty good money. When I received this program
I grumbled to Jody about receiving junk mail. I made fun
of the whole thing, spouting my knowledge of the population
and percentages involved. I ''knew'' it wouldn't work. Jody
totally ignored my supposed intelligence and few days later
she jumped in with both feet. I made merciless fun of her,
and was ready to lay the old ''I told you so'' on her when
the thing didn't work. Well, the laugh was on me! Within
3 weeks she had received 50 responses. Within the next 45
days she had received total $ 47,200.00 ... all cash!
I was shocked. I have joined Jody in her hobby.

It really is a great opportunity to make relatively easy
money with little cost to you. I followed the simple

Whoops, I've heard of the P=NP problem but I guess I was confused
about what it meant. But there are some problems where candidate
solutions can be checked much faster than new solutions can be
generated, no? If you want to know whether a number can be factorized
it's easy to check candidate factors, for example, although if the
answer is that it cannot be factorized because the number is prime I
guess there'd be no fast way to check if that answer is correct.

Factoring is not known to be in NP (the so-called NP-complete class
of problems...solve on in P time and you've solved them all!).

The example I favor is the Hamiltonian cycle/circuit problem: find a
path through a set of linked nodes (cities) which passes through each
node once and only once. All of the known solutions to an arbitrary
Hamiltonian cycle problem are exponential in time (in number of nodes).
For example, for 5 cities there are at most 120 possible paths, so this
is an easy one. But for 50 cities there are as many as 49!/2 possible
paths (how many, exactly, depends on the links between the cities, with
not every city having all possible links to other cities). For a mere
100 cities, the number of routes to consider is larger than the number
of particles we believe to be in the universe.

However, saying known solutions is not the same thing as we have
proved that it takes exponential time. For all we know, now, in 2002,
there are solutions not requiring exponential time (in # of cities).

This is also somewhat relevant to theories of everything since we
might want to ask if somewhere in the set of all possible universes
there exists one where time travel is possible and computing power
increases without bound. If the answer is yes, that might suggest that
any TOE based on all possible computations is too small to
accomodate a really general notion of all possible universes.

And this general line of reasoning leads to a Many Worlds Version of
the Fermi Paradox: Why aren't they here?

The reason I lean toward the shut up and calculate or for all
practical purposes interpretation of quantum mechanics is embodied in
the above argument.

IF the MWI universe branchings are at all communicatable-with, that is,
at least _some_ of those universes would have very, very large amounts
of power, computer power, numbers of people, etc. And some of them, if
it were possible, would have communicated with us, colonized us,
visited us, etc.

This is a variant of the Fermi Paradox raised to a very high power.

My conclusion is that the worlds of the MWI are not much different from
Lewis' worlds with unicorns--possibly extant, but unreachable, and
hence, operationally, no different from a single universe model.

(I don't believe, necessarily, in certain forms of the Copenhagen
Interpretation, especially anything about signals propagating
instantaneously, just the quantum mechanics is about measurables
ground truth of what we see, what has never failed us, what the
mathematics tells us and what is experimentally verified. Whether there
really are (in the modal realism sense of Lewis) other worlds is
neither here nor there. Naturally, I would be thrilled to see evidence,
or to conclude myself from deeper principles, that other worlds have
more than linguistic existence.)

The Collapse of Communism.

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
Krishan Kumar.
1989: Revolutionary Ideas and Ideals.
Univesity of Minnesota Press, 2001, 448 pp.
$US 24.95 paper (0-8166-3453-X), $US 68.95 cloth (0-8166-3452-1)

A professor of sociology at the University of Virginia and expert on the
history of utopian thinking, Kumar proposes an impressive and provocative
reassessment of the major intellectual, political and moral underpinnings
of the revolutionary upheaval that dismantled Leninist regimes in
East-Central Europe during what was rightly called the annus mirabilis
1989. He explores the role of critical intellectuals in the
de-legitimization of Leninist regimes and the main causes of communism’s
breakdown. The best parts of the book deal with the nature of revolutionary
actions and ideas in the 1980s and 1990s. Kumar rejects the different
“endist” schools: for him, and rightly so, history has not reached its
ultimate station in the figure of liberal democracy, and utopia has not
been exhausted. Particularly informative and illuminating is Kumar’s
discussion of the genealogy and implications of the concept of Central
Europe in the shaping of the dissident philosophy of emancipation. Readers
who want to grasp the cultural resources of oppositional stances of
movements like Poland’s Solidarity, Czechoslovakia’s Charter 77, and
Hungary’s Democratic Opposition (Network of Free Initiatives) in the 1980s
will find this book truly enriching. The book is superbly informed in terms
of the major Western discussions on the revolutions of 1989 and their
aftermath, including the post-communist syndrome of malaise, disaffection
with anti-politics, and the marginalization of the former dissident heroes.
What is missing to some extent is an analysis of the ongoing debates in
East-Central Europe. Kumar quotes extensively prominent authors like Adam
Michnik, George Konrad and Vaclav Havel. Surprisingly, he does not mention
works by other exponents of the dissident tradition, including such
significant authors as Miklos Haraszti, Janos Kis, or Karol Modzelewski,
who have all contributed to a better understanding of the nature of
communism’s collapse and the rise of new political communities rooted in
the values associated with the ideas of 1989.

Kumar embraces the view held by the late French historian François Furet,
according to whom 1989 has not brought to fore any new idea. He also agrees
with Jurgen Habermas’s stance on the revolutions of 89 being fundamentally
attempts at restoring the pre-Leninist order. But these are questionable
positions. In fact, as Agnes Heller, the former critical Marxist Hungarian
philosopher has often argued, 1989 is not necessarily about new ideas
(although it is also about that, I would say), but rather about new
political styles. In this respect, it remains to be seen why the new
politics championed by the men and women of the revolutions of 1989,
including those related to direct democracy and civil society, have lost
their appeal. Is this a temporary setback for these ideas? Or maybe they
belong to what Hannah Arendt once called the “lost treasure of the
revolutionary tradition” and will be someday re-discovered. After all, this
is the major disagreement between the former “anti-politician” Havel and
the neo-liberal, ultra-pragmatic Vaclav Klaus: for the former, civil
society is an indispensable component of the new democracies; for the later
is just an intellectual utopia, a mirage that prevents the coalescence of
genuine political gains.

In agreement with Hungarian political philosopher G. M. Tamas, Kumar takes
issue with those who proclaimed the rise of civil society in Eastern Europe
as a main element that led to the revolutionary transformations.
Furthermore, he questions the decisive role of movements from below in the
disbanding of East European dictatorship. True, Kumar expresses admiration
for these movements, but sees them as secondary in significance compared to
the most important geopolitical cause of the revolutions: the Gorbachev
factor. In other words, for him, had Mikhail Gorbachev not come to power in
1985 and allowed for new experiments in the Soviet bloc, including the
resumption of Marxist revisionist attempts to construct “socialism with a
human face,” the revolutions of 1989 would have been impossible. In fact,
as Michnik once argued, Gorbachev himself was the response not only to the
systemic crisis of Sovietism, but also the effort of the Leninist
bureaucracy to contain the contagious impact of Poland’s independent,
self-governing movement Solidarity. Moreover, Gorbachev’s reforms were the
response to mounting pressure from grassroots associations and other forms
of civil society in the Soviet Union (a point made in the late 1980s by
historian Moshe Lewin). In order to make sense of 1989, one needs to
revisit the major efforts to rethink Marxism and Leninism, including the
saga of crushed revolutionary efforts in East-Central Europe (Hungary 1956,

The Banality of Crypto.

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
Do we revere the printing press as a great revolutionary lever? What about
the ancient long barrelled musket? (some of you might I know.)
Will the denizens of the future even two generations hence consider crypto
anything special?
Of course not,the commonplace, the ubiquitous and the everyday is soon taken
for granted and is soon quickly part of the wallpaper. Why will it be there?
Simply because on the balance of probabilities,if it isn't then none of us
will be,just ask Bill Joy or Ted Kascinski. However profoundly revolutionary
the effect of the printing press and the rifle were once now they are as
mundane as a museum. So it shall be with crypto and the sooner the
better. That it will help bring down one of the worst dangers to our
continued presence here will no sooner occur than it shall be forgotten and
that's as it should be.To waste time revering our revolutionary forebears
would take longer every generation. It's enough to know that as long as we
remain human there will be those able to seize what chance and intellect
offer to overthrow the old and get on with the new, thus preserving the best
of the old in a never ending dialectic. There can never be an end to
hirstory...only humanity.

We did not enter into society to become worse than we were before, nor to
have fewer rights than we had before, but to have those rights better secured.

Albert Camus.The Rebel.(one)

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
The Rebel
The Rebel by Albert Camus is 50 this year, published in 1955 the text refers
to 1953 as the year of its conception. How has it stood up over the years?
Is it still worth reading? I came across a copy recently after being
reminded of an event in my life, perhaps triggered by this book. When I was
15 I borrowed my fathers copy and was deciphering it in my room one day
when he appeared at the door. Why don't you just fuck off and take your
nihilistic views with you,he exclaimed, possibly the worse for drink.Well I
did take off, hitching to Sydney on the old highway that so recently jogged
my memory.
To arrive back where you started and know the place for the first time is a
theme from another favorite book of mine from that era,(1970)The
Magus. After arriving back at that fork in the road with guidebook in
hand, here is my chance to know the place refreshed, more knowledgeable and
more autonomous. But is it worth knowing at all?
Well not many books give you something to go on with for decades so I owe
the damn thing something.I would have to say yes,it is worth the bother, the
time and the difficulty of wrestling with it.You may not enjoy it but it
can be read as hirstory, flicked through and thrown alongside all the other
bourgeois historians and political philosophers.A teenager had to know
something about rebellion in those days as it was all around, not so much
the forgotten seminal movie,'Rebel without a cause,'but youth rebellion
mainly against the war in Vietnam.
Our family spent two years in the States,(66-67)AU had the draft and my
brother and I would be eligible in a few short years. There were even a few
high school student,'unionists',passing around Yippie samizdats and Zap
comics along with the odd joint.

Free Hanssen/Swap Hanssen.Hanssen for President.

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
Hanssen's behavior raised no red flags at the bureau, and he was caught
only with help from a Russian defector.

Hanssen not only walked out of the FBI building with documents and computer
disks containing top-secret information, but he also cruised the FBI's
major investigative database. The Webster report and FBI leaders agree that
installing basic security in its computer system is crucial, and the bureau
plans to use devices that will trigger warnings if someone is regularly
inspecting files without authorization.
A preliminary damage assessment by the FBI of the impact of convicted spy
Robert P. Hanssen's treachery determined that the identities of more than
50 people who were providing confidential intelligence information to the
bureau or were being recruited to do so were disclosed to the Russians.
Although it has been reported that Hanssen's disclosures played a part in
the execution or jailing of at least three Russians who had spied for the
United States, this is the first indication that his activities put in
jeopardy a far larger number of other people working clandestinely for the
bureau, according to the report of a special commission headed by former
FBI and CIA director William H. Webster that was released Thursday.
The FBI has had to take dozens of its informants out of operation and halt
a number of technical programs and projects, according to the report. The
Russian intelligence units in the Washington field office were apparently
hard hit, the report said, and the New York field office had two sources
put in jeopardy.
Even today, according to the Webster report, some FBI sources apparently
fear that information Hanssen passed will lead to their discovery and their
handlers can do little to assuage these fears.
A senior FBI official said yesterday that disclosure to the Russians of the
identity of certain people providing secret information to the bureau
could be a threat to their lives. But some of the informants may have
been American or foreign nationals who would not be in danger because they
were in positions in banks or private companies. Their access through their
work would have enabled them to provide confidential information on Russian
targets.
The Webster commission used Hanssen's damaging disclosures to sharply
criticize the FBI's sloppy security practices, starting with weaknesses in
its automated case support system (ACS), which was supposed to store the
Bureau's institutional knowledge.
Most, if not all members of the Bureau community have access to ACS, the
report found. Though the system could be used in a way that would restrict
access to highly sensitive files, such as those on informants, the
commission found that the system that went into effect in 1995 was so
difficult to operate that many of the files that should have been made
unreachable were not. As a result, it found, Hanssen was able to access
500 case files that had not been appropriately restricted.
The weakness in the ACS system was known in some bureau field offices but
not accepted at FBI headquarters, according to the report. For example, the
commission found it was common knowledge that agents in the New York
field office refused to put intelligence information in ACS as required by
bureau regulation because they developed significant concerns about
security. That came because an intern from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology was able to break into restricted files in one afternoon of
testing the pilot system.
Another major weakness in protecting the identities of informants was that
they were given only a secret classification, and thus their files could
be kept on desks during working hours at headquarters and field offices
because those spaces were considered secured areas.
The FBI's failure to give human intelligence more protection than it does
is somewhat at odds with its traditional desire to protect human sources,
the commission noted.
When CIA spy Aldrich H. Ames was uncovered in 1994, it was learned that he
had disclosed the names of agency and FBI-recruited Soviet and Warsaw Pact
agents and that about 10 were executed. At that time members of Congress
were surprised to learn that the agency classification for the identities
was only secret, as opposed to the more restrictive top-secret.
One of the Webster panel's recommendations was that the bureau should
carefully consider adopting the . . . system of compartmenting human source
information developed by the CIA. The irony is that an FBI
counterintelligence expert was sent to the CIA to upgrade its internal
security operations after the Ames case, while today a CIA
counterintelligence officer has been dispatched to the FBI to do the same
thing there.
In summing up its findings, the Webster commission in effect said the FBI
now joins the CIA, the State Department -- which lost a laptop computer
containing sensitive information and found a bug in one of its rooms -- and
the

Albert Camus.The Rebel (two)

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
So you were a Rebel then, there was no getting around that, you were reminded
everytime some Hoon yelled out,get a haircut!'There was a sort of,'cutural
revolution',going on and living close by Universities you couldn't help
noticing.Certainly psychedelics had demonstrated brave new worlds of
freedom existed right under our noses. The question was no longer, why
rebel?',it was,'why conform?'
Conforming could mean burning children alive in Vietnam,we had to
rebel.Here was a writer Camus,well known from,'the stranger',who seemed to
have written the textbook on being a rebel.Yet there were immediate
difficulties with the text.It was dense,it was full of abstract concepts
and few of the characters mentioned rang any bells.Still it was fascinating
to try and learn the meaning of the concepts through context.A great game!
And then there were the characters, these were real people he was talking
about and it was enough to know that they existed at the time.I could find
out more about them later and would I!
Albert was laying it all out for the last few hundred years and all you had
to do as a reader was rise to the occasion.Boot up,if you like,it all
seemed to be right there. The who, what, where, when and most important, why of
the meaning of,if not life,a critical issue of my life at that time and
place.Revolt.
Now the concentration camps are creeping back, the humane executioners and
the terror we can still find uses for Camus.Or can we?Due to bad
translations, the Gaullic language or some inate sexism of Alberts,he seems
to have written out half the human race.Women do get a look in as
characters, even fictional characters and 'love interest,'but a feminist
would have to work at this book.It would have to detract from the enjoyment.

Albert Camus.The Rebel. (three)

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
So we rebel against the idea that rebellion is only for men, that must be
said at the start. Now we strike problems with the idea of race. That it is
to Europe the world should look after disgracing itself so badly.
Why not America? They don't have rebels over there? What was Camus's role
in Algerian revolt? As it happens, his was a decent response that was
totally ineffectual. It hasn't stopped bourgeois humanitarian politicians
making fools of themselves in polarized situations ever since.Maybe that is
one revolt I miss the point of.Anyway by now we have read,Manchild in the
promised land,Soul on Ice and Soledad Brother and we suddenly remember that
Mersault shot and killed an Arab on the beach that day the sun got in his eye.
Now over the years and thanks in large part to Camus,we choose Anarchism
over the democratic socialist tradition we were raised in and the
Marxist,'leap of faith'we are offered in our wanderings. As anarchists
dipping into the bible of rebellion what do we find?
Well a rather cavalier approach to Max Stirner actually.I refer those
interested to the web where Alberts mistakes are dissected.Still we all
make mistakes and two out three aren't bad.Except actually there may be
three because since 9-11 something else has come up.See in spite of perhaps
most of the hijackers not knowing what was to happen to them,at least some
of these new assassins did. What are the formulas according to the master
again? Pacifism is wrong because it approves diffuse violence and
continuing injustice.Murder in the name of any absolute value is wrong and
nihilistic yet murder followed by self sacrifice, gives rise to the informal
value that Camus builds his book on.The rebel may be driven to violence by
extreme circumstances and kill as long as they accept that they will be
killed in turn. There is a kind of just judges approach to the problem and
Camus certainly is preoccupied with justice, see 'La Chute'(the fall)The
Camus approach might be said to have been formed during his time in the
resistance and its a little dissappointing that theory,(in the rebel)
overwhelms lessons that could have been referred to in combat. There is a
curious ahirstorical side to Camus even as he works up to his elbows in the
guts of hirstory.

Albert Camus.The Rebel. (four)

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
Toward the end of the rebel, the metaphysical logical deriver of
revolutionary principals from practise suddenly becomes a carver of
commandments.Absolute free speech and no indefinite imprisonment are worthy
and laudable but they seem to spring out of Alberts,(Athena's ?)head.
They contradict the rest of the book that argues in the most minute detail
against deriving any absolute values from revolt. There might just be some
sense of desperation here as he has painted himself,(and us)into a very
dark corner.
Getting back to 9-11 for a minute, when we apply the logic on offer in the
rebel to the hijackers whose real generosity gives all to the present, what
do we get? Quite logically we get a picture of one person somewhere with
the power to destroy the planet. And why shouldn't they if they pay with
their own life as well. The nihilists Camus approves of are now arming
themselves with the means to take us all with them and according to the
formula of the rebel, this will give rise to a value?
Camus does mention atomic suicide in the rebel and most of it is taken up
with his battle with nihilism, with murder and suicide. He does argue for
limits and against absolutes but is this argument effective?
It is a contradiction kept in tension, created and mastered by intelligence

Automakers Block Crash Data Recorders

2002-12-30 Thread Steve Schear
Matt,

In your Dec 23 piece http://www.nytimes.com/2002/12/29/national/29CRAS.html
you cited concerns that there might be privacy and legal issues regarding
ownership of data acquired by their auto's recorders. I agree. If the
industry adopts open standard between the senor and data recording
subsystems the stage could be set for car owners to purchase after-market
recorders which encrypt the data and keep it private, even in the face of
subpoenas. I suspect those maintaining that this area of law is settled
have either not thought this through are have an unspoken agenda.

Re: I lost 30 pounds in two weeks with Power Diet Plus!

2002-12-30 Thread weight loss
Hi!

Let's kill George Bush.

Just because I don't encyrpt, it doesn't follow that I can't encrypt. I'll
grant you that in actual fact as a practical matter I don't encrypt, but
that doesn't mean I can't. If I wanted to, of course, I could just go next
door to see my friend landlord and he could have me encrypting until the
cows came home. Which reminds me, my rent is late!

Anyway, I fall into that demographic that iGrrrl others have described:
believe in privacy, don't do much about it (but I do surf without cookies,
and I don't use cell phones and I don't use credit cards).

Why don't I use encryption, then? To quote our old friend Reb Tevye, I
will tell you: I don't know.

And lastly here's a tidbit that's somewhat off topic: I have a bunch of
yahoo and hotmail accounts, and sometimes just for grins I send notes from
one to the other with contents like this: Let's kill George Bush. And
let's do microbial warfare to Dick Cheney and Bill Clinton. I despise the
Jihad. Let us anthrax the President until he is dead and let's assassinate
the public safety.

I started this practice after one of our own K5 brethren was tracked down
by the Secret Service on account of some of his posts here (which were
quite benign, if you ask me.) So I decided to see if I could get a rise out
of the Secret Service for mail sent from me, to me, and seen by none other.

Dear Wife Betty, looking over my shoulder one day seeing one of these
things, said, what the hell is that? I told her. She said to Youngest
Daughter, Your father is trying to get arrested again.

No, I said. It's illegal to threaten the President. But it's not illegal
to talk to yourself.

Since then I think my wife and daughter have taken up the practice. I
haven't caught an inquiry yet. But on the other hand, I live on Martha's
Vinyard, and in a hundred hours fishing over the last decade I haven't yet
caught a bluefish (it's nearly impossible to not catch a bluefish on
Martha's Vineyard.)

Meta: OK yes I admit it, this is the kind of slashdotty post that generally
gets modded to about 2.3 by our elite K5 post criteria. And if anybody else
wrote this note I would agree that it's self-indulgent and noisome and
meriting of a 2 or therebouts.

But hey, I am after all the eponymous johnny of the subject, and I rather
think I deserve some slack. (Actually, the mere fact that Don Davis is my
landlord should get me at least a 4 irregardless.)

The Culpability of the Conformist Criminal Choate.

Have we heard the slightest peep out of this serial spammer about this?
Choate condemn the state murderers or remain a cold blooded conforming creep.

To Kill Or Not To Kill
'Illinois, which has a death penalty, has a higher murder rate than the
neighboring state of Michigan, which has no capital punishment but roughly
the same racial makeup, income levels, and population distribution between
cities and rural areas. In fact, in the last decade the murder rate in
states without the death penalty has remained consistently lower than in
the states that have had executions. Surveys of criminologists and police
chiefs show that substantial majorities of both groups doubt that the death
penalty significantly reduces the number of homicides'

Aceh Show Trial Verdict.

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
McCulloch sentenced
December 31 2002
By Tom Hyland
Foreign Editor
Jakarta

Picture: AFP
Lesley McCulloch behind bars before her trial in Aceh.

Indonesian soldiers in the strife-torn province of Aceh usually get their
own way, so when they detained two Westerners - and women at that - leaving
a rebel area, they would have expected them to come quietly.

Instead, they were met with defiance. Australian-based academic Lesley
McCulloch, 40, refused to open her bags and was allegedly roughed up and
sexually harassed as a result.

In reaction, her companion, American nurse Joy Lee Sadler, 57, did what she
later told an interviewer came naturally: I slugged the Indonesian
commander in the face. For that, Sadler said, she was punched in the mouth
and stomach.

The pair's defiance has continued in the three-and-a-half months they have
been detained in Banda Aceh, the provincial capital, since their arrest on
September 11.

Yesterday McCulloch, a British national who until July worked at the
University of Tasmania in Hobart, was sentenced to five months' jail. She
had been convicted of violating her tourist visa by contacting rebels of
the Free Aceh Movement, which has been fighting for independence in the
province for two decades in a vicious war that may have claimed as many as
30,000 lives.
The actions of the defendant could have threatened national security and
the territorial integrity of the republic of Indonesia, said Judge Asril
Marwan.

The sentence will take into account the time McCulloch has served already,
meaning she will be freed in about six weeks.

Sadler, who has been on a hunger strike since late last month and appeared
weak and distressed in court yesterday, was sentenced to four months' jail,
meaning she will be freed in just over a week. She cried when the sentence
was handed down.

McCulloch appears to have particularly upset the military with her
published accounts of alleged human rights abuses inflicted by the army on
civilians. She maintained her defiance yesterday, describing herself as a
victim of the Aceh conflict.

The whole trial process is based on paranoia and fear, she told reporters
in the courtroom. And she told the prosecutors: You are evil, evil.

The London-based campaign group Fair Trials Abroad, which has been
monitoring the case, said the verdict appeared to be politically motivated.

Normally for visa offences people are simply booted out of the country,
said the group's director Stephen Jakobi. It's got to be politically linked.

Indonesia's legal system is widely regarded as corrupt. Critics allege that
verdicts often depend on pressure from politicians or military officers.

Both women had put up a feisty defence in their trial, irritating the
authorities with their uncompromising stance and denying the charges, which
carry a maximum five-year sentence.

Prosecutor Kamaruzzaman had called for a nine-month jail term because the
women's actions caused unrest among the people and because they tried to
obstruct the court process by giving unclear testimonies.

The prosecutor alleged they took photographs, gathered data and documents
and provided medical treatment in a village in South Aceh where they were
supposed to be on a tourist trip.

The women had argued that they could not refuse when armed rebels asked
them to take photographs of houses destroyed by the military.

In protest at delays in the trial, Sadler, who is HIV positive and suffers
from hepatitis, went on a hunger strike on November 28.

But it was McCulloch who had the most prickly relationship with officials
and who seemed the main target of prosecutors, who at one stage threatened
to charge her with espionage.

ID thieves honorary horsemen.

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
Authorities are struggling to combat a computer-based crime wave, writes
Peter Huck.

Ever wonder what would happen if someone had taken one of your credit cards
to its maximum, cleaned out one of your bank accounts, piled up debts, even
committed a crime in your name - without you having any idea until police
or debt collection agencies were banging on your door?

Welcome to Identity Theft, the fastest growing, and possible hardest to
combat, crime in the US and, now that the Internet has made us all one big
happy and exploitable family, possibly the world.

In November, US federal authorities in New York announced they had arrested
three men and charged them with stealing credit card information and
draining the bank accounts of at least 30,000 people. It is believed to be
the biggest identity theft scheme so far.

With a few keystrokes, these men essentially picked the pockets of tens of
thousands of Americans, taking their identities, stealing their money and
swiping their security.

According to US authorities, it was an inside job, allegedly facilitated by
Philip Cummings, an employee of Teledata Communications. The Long Island
software company provides banks with computerised access to credit
information databases.

Mr Cummings is accused of selling, at $US30 a pop, passwords and codes -
forwarded to at least 20 people - for downloading consumer credit reports.

The scam netted at least $US2.7 million ($A4.81 million), although the
nine-month investigation is still at its early stages and that figure could
swell dramatically. Many suspect this crime is the tip of an iceberg.

The FBI has called for greater international cooperation to combat identity
theft. Certainly, police forces across the US have been overwhelmed by the
phenomenon, which surfaced in the early 1990s.

What is truly scary about identity theft is how easy it is. At the simplest
level opportunistic thieves pilfer mail boxes - sometimes brazenly trailing
postal workers - and rubbish bins, searching for bank and credit card
details, and other information.

The financial costs of identity theft are difficult to quantify. But one
thing is certain - they are invariably passed on to consumers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the total cost of identity theft wasn't
billions of dollars, if you consider all the variants of this crime, says
the agent in charge of cyber crimes at the FBI Los Angeles office, Frank
Harrill.

Initially, identity theft was not even recognised as a crime in the US - it
is now a federal crime and most states have laws - making it a Kafkaesque
experience for victims who had to prove someone else was responsible for
the outlandish bills charged to their name.

Even now, victims have to resuscitate their credit ratings, sometimes as
new bills flood in.

The worst cases have involved people whose identities were stolen by career
criminals who then committed serious crimes.

Linda Foley, the founder of the Identity Theft Resource Centre, which helps
victims, realised her identity had been stolen when her credit company
phoned to verify a change of address.

They wanted to know about my new post office box, she says. Except that
I didn't have one.

She later learned she had been betrayed by her employer, to whom Ms Foley
had given her social security number, the US equivalent of a personal
identification number.

Besides spending hundreds of hours unravelling the financial scam and
reviving her credit rating , Ms Foley had to grapple with the emotional
stress of betrayal and lingering paranoia.

Ms Foley is scathing of US businesses that, for example, send out billions
of unsolicited, pre-approved credit card offers each year. No wonder the
sale of home paper shredders has skyrocketed.

Once thieves acquire a name, an address, a phone number or, best, a social
security number, they can construct a fake identity and acquire bogus
drivers' licences, credit cards, and bank accounts. Some thieves assume
multiple identities, dumping them when credit dries up. Today, identity
theft takes myriad forms. Modern thieves are more likely to pick through
massive digitalised databases, often accessed by hackers using the Internet.

Credit card databases are really coin of the realm now within the hacker
communities, says Mr Harrill. Although that isn't so hard on individuals
- it isn't the assumption of an individual's total identity - it's still
identity theft. There are millions of compromised credit card accounts.
This trend has made identity theft a supranational crime.

Somebody in Latvia might be using stolen identities to order shipments of
computers, for example, says Ronald Iden, of the FBI Los Angeles office.
Or criminal groups anywhere outside this country can now loot bank and
credit accounts here. Or, for that matter, anywhere.

There also is growing concern that terrorists are using identity theft to
launder money to raise funds.

What to do? Consumers should check their

I don't want to worry you but this GM crop thing...

2002-12-30 Thread Matthew X
Monster weeds feared
By DANNY BUTTLER, rural reporter
31dec02

A NEW report on genetically modified plants has revealed they could lead to
the creation of herbicide resistant superweeds.

Environment groups have called on the State Government to abandon trials of
GM crops following the release of the British report.
The news followed a Productivity Commission study which found Australian
farmers will fall behind the rest of the world if they do not embrace
genetically engineered plants.
But the British National Institute of Agricultural Botany and the
Laboratory of the Government Chemist report has cast doubt on the safety of
the controversial plants.
Canola crops examined during the six-year study were found to have
contaminated other crops, with machinery used on the test plots helping to
spread genes to other land.
It was the reported ease with which the GM canola cross-bred with weeds
which caused the greatest concern among environmental groups.
The Australian Conservation Foundation said cross-bred GM plants would be a
menace to native eco-systems.
We have a tragic history of introducing species and crops which get out
into the
Australian environment and have a devastating impact on wildlife and
agriculture, ACF campaign director John Connor said.
It's exactly the sort of thing we have been warning about . . .
cross-species could create superweeds which would get out of control and
damage not only the Australian bush but the Australian farm.
The ACF called on the State and Federal Governments to place a moratorium
on GM crops until further evidence can be gathered.
We're not entirely opposed to them, but we need a five-year freeze, Mr
Connor said.
We need to be extremely careful as we look at this new technology and I
think caution is justified when you hear these reports.
The Victorian Farmers Federation said it was satisfied sufficient caution
was being taken with current GM trials.
VFF grains council chairman Ron Hards said the Victorian Government was
taking the correct approach.
I think it's on the right track. Industry self-regulation and government
regulation are working, he said. We haven't seen any information that has
changed our minds and we have been looking at the issue for donkey's years.
The Productivity Commission research paper found that if Australian
producers did not boost GM technology, markets for oilseeds and non-wheat
grains were likely to stagnate.
The results imply that over the longer term, the expansion of GM
technology into non-wheat grains and oilseed sectors could have significant
impacts on Australia's trade position, it said.
If Australia's adoption (of GM technology) does not increase, while its
trading partners expand their use of GM crop technology, Australia may lose
some opportunities to raise (or even maintain) its market shares over the
long run.
But the ACF said the Productivity Commission had failed to look at the big
picture.
I think the productivity commission is taking a very short-sighted and
classical economic view and hasn't factored in the risks appropriately, Mr
Connor said.
This report shows just how big those risks can be for a country like
Australia.
Last year, about 5.5 million farmers in 13 nations grew GM crops --
predominantly soybeans, corn, cotton and canola.

Nightmare experience for man whose cancer turned him into a pedophile
December 31 2002
A brain tumour that was found to have triggered sexual aberration has made
medical history.
New York: A brain tumour turned a 40-year-old schoolteacher into an
uncontrollable sex addict and pedophile, a meeting of experts has been told.

When the tumour was removed, the man's obsession disappeared. But by then
the teacher had been evicted from his house and found guilty of child
molestation.

Russell Swerdlow and Jeffrey Burns, neurologists at the University of
Virginia, believe it is the first reported case linking brain cancer with
pedophilia.

They told the annual meeting of the American Neurological Association in
New York that the tumour was in a brain region that did not affect physical
health.

Dr Swerdlow said: We're dealing with the neurology of morality here. It's
one of those areas where you could have a lot of damage and a doctor would
never suspect something's wrong.
The teacher had secretly started visiting child pornography websites and
soliciting prostitutes, activities he had never engaged in before.

Dr Swerdlow said that while the man felt his new behaviour was
unacceptable, in his words, the pleasure principle overrode his restraint.

When the man's wife discovered he had been making subtle sexual advances
towards young children, he was legally evicted from his house and found
guilty of child molestation.

A judge ruled he had to pass a 12-step Sexaholics Anonymous rehabilitation
course or face going to jail. But the man was expelled from the program
after asking women on the course for sex, the meeting heard.

The evening before he was due to receive a prison sentence he took himself
to a hospital. He said he was suffering headaches and feared he would rape
his landlady.

After being remanded to psychiatric care, he complained of balance
problems, and a MRI brain scan revealed an egg-sized tumour. Seven months
after the tumour was removed, and having completed the Sexaholics Anonymous
course, the man returned home and resumed a normal life.

In October last year the headaches returned and he started collecting
pornography again. Another scan showed that the tumour had regrown, but
again its removal caused the man's sex-obsessed behaviour to disappear.

Dr Burns said: He wasn't faking, but if someone argues that every
pedophile needs an MRI, the difference in this case was that the patient
had a normal history before he acquired the problem.

David Rosenfield, a behavioural neurologist at Baylor College of Medicine
in Houston, Texas, said more research was needed on whether other problems
with the orbifrontal cortex region of the brain might be linked to pedophilia.

The case was reported by New Scientist magazine's online news service.

QM, EPR, A/B

I don't believe, necessarily, in certain forms of the Copenhagen Interpretation,
especially anything about signals propagating instantaneously, just the quantum
mechanics is about measurables ground truth of what we see, what has never failed us,
what the mathematics tells us and what is experimentally verified. Whether there
really are (in the modal realism sense of Lewis) other worlds is neither here nor
there. Naturally, I would be thrilled to see evidence, or to conclude myself from
deeper principles, that other worlds have more than linguistic existence.

Yes, this has been a fashionable set of statements, very smiliar to quantum mechanics
is merely a useful tool for calclating the outcome of experiments.

I used to chant this too, but the recent (well, over the last 10 years) experimental
work in EPR has convinced me that there's really something odd going on here.

Many worlds (first proposed in the 50s and recently revived) is one possible
explanation for why, for instance, photons in the double slit experiment know about
the slit they didn't go through. And while I am not particularly convinced that this
is the explanation (there are other basic things about the QM world it doesn't
explain, such as why I measure THIS outcome rather than THAT outcome), I'm personally
at the point where I think some form of answer is needed, and that the above
intellectual dodge is no longer valid. So at least many worlds is one possible attempt
to answer why photons are able to know instantaneously about correlated photons far
removed (and for me, and the late John Bell it is inescapable that they do indeed find
out instantaneously).

One way out is to ditch quantum mechanics as being anything near a description of
reality as classical theories in essence are. Tim Boyer of CUNY and a batch of Italian
researchers have done a pretty convincing job of showing that Ahranov-Bohm can be
classically derived in a fairly straightforward manner. But it doesn't explain how AB
is able to predict said phenomenon in about 4 lines while they need many pages of
fairly difficult EM theory.

For me it's clear that A/B and EPR show us that QM is telling us SOMETHING about
reality, but we don't yet understand what it is.

That's pretty cool. In this case QM is just a short cut.

For me it's clear that A/B and EPR show us that QM is telling us
SOMETHING about reality, but we don't yet understand what it is.

Part of the problem is that the detection equipment is many fermions
looking at single particles. I think QM is easier to understand when
looking at an ion trap. There are lots of photons around for every atom
but the interactions are with fields and the detection is of single
photons (again with massive amounts of equipment, but the atoms don't
interact directly as in EPR or double slit).

QM is a nice model that works. It is a good mathematical description of
observed phenomena. What else do we need? The idea that a photon
passes thru one slit or the other is just a model. What is the slit?
It's really a whole bunch of fermions in a spacial pattern, and when an
electron or photon interacts with that distribution we get the observed
self interaction result. The model is self interaction. That may have
nothing to do with reality.

Patience, persistence, truth,
Dr. mike

Nothing, they're already corrupt. If they're already corrupt then you have
to accept the fact that even if we were in the nirvana state of anarchy at
least some people would not see it as their best interest, and would do
something about it (which by the way is where the 'big stick' observation
about anarchy comes into play - however much you might want to deny it).

Anarchy is that people would get along if left to their own ends and
didn't have to put up with 'governments'. The problem is that
'governments' don't exist outside of individuals anymore than forests
exist without trees. You can take the tree out of the forest, you can't
take the forest out of the trees. You can take people out of government,
but you can't take government out of people.

The way people speak of 'government' as if it were something extant
outside of peoples minds and hearts is truly schizo.

Typical CACL double-speak. People attracted to anarchy, irrespective of

 the above argument.

IF the MWI universe branchings are at all communicatable-with, that is,

thing, just a New York thing. We need replacement towers for sure, and that design by
David Rockwell Co (with those odd empty tower-structures) might be good. They have
the additional advantage of not casting such a dark shadow over downtown and Brooklyn
Heights.

Again, you miss the point. We New Yorkers navigated by them, and when traveling out

My own initiial idea was to rebuild the towers as they were, but in
goldtone instead of silver. Now, I'd like to be a little more respectful
of the pre-WTC street grid (If you weren't actually going to the WTC,
it was a huge obstacle to get around, either driving or on foot). But I
still want towers which rise far above the skyline.

That original twisty-towers design brought forward in response to how shitty the
original official designs were by that Amalgamated Architects was the best design,
but for some reason it didn't make it into the official final round.

One hopes not a single fucking dime of taxpayer money will go into rebuilding
anything on that site. (Oh, I won't scream if $25,000 is allocated to hire that
Chinese architect to replicate her Vietcong wall with the names of the dead so that
the weepy ones can do their tracings and all. But nothing more should be spent out of
the taxpayer's pocket.)

Like I said, you can either SEE your tax dollars build something (even if its
useless), or else they'll just dissappear up some buereucrats (I can never spell that
word) nose. Unless you pay zero taxes of course.

(Ayn Rand loved the Twin Towers, ironically, and typically, and disgustingly. But,
then, she thought cigarette smoking was a symbolic affirmation of Man's control of
fire and his striving to reify A or Not-A through purity of essence!

A read through a couple Ayn Rand books and none of this should be suprising. As far
as I'm concerned she wasn't exactly von Neumann.

If Governments really want us to behave like civilized human beings, they
should give serious consideration towards setting a better example:
Ruling by force, rather than consensus; the unrestrained application of
unjust laws (which the victim-populations were never allowed input on in
the first place); the State policy of justice only for the rich and
elected; the intentional abuse and occassionally destruction of entire
populations merely to distract an already apathetic and numb electorate...
This type of demogoguery must surely wipe out the fascist United States
as surely as it wiped out the fascist Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The views expressed here are mine, and NOT those of my employers,
associates, or others. Besides, if it *were* the opinion of all of
those people, I doubt there would be a problem to bitch about in the
first place...

My qualifications: I lived in NYC when I was a little kid, and in
Manhattan from the end of college until I moved to Massachusetts
 14 years ago.

Qualifications:

Born and raised in NYC. Was a full-time, original occupant in
Battery Park City (across the street from WTC) for about three years, kept
part-time digs there until the early 90's. I was married on the roof of 1
WTC, and my new bride managed to barf all over it when the building swayed in
the wind unexpectedly (for her - I was quite used to it).

Background discussion:

I remember the early still-birth of WTC, and I remember it's
completion (a non-thing if ever there was one). I vividly remember the
pain that WTC brought to NYC with it's collossal footprint and complete
disregard for everything that was not WTC. I remember the WTC
community [Battery Park City] being born: White Flight and Nothing Else.

WTC was, in spite of it's disregard for everything non-WTC, still a
very New York kind of place. It's core was the Art of Stark
Efficiency. From the design of the towers themselves to the layout of the
cities beneath them, the place just screamed efficiency. No corner was
unnecessarily adorned when the beauty of efficient use could make a
statement on it's own behalf. Efficiency was *everywhere*: Path trains
terminating New Jersey commuter runs in the basement; local (to WTC) police
departments; food concourse layout which maximized retail space while
minimizing walking to it; elevators which were sorted and laid out for best
use of resources; interconnections of *everything* in a maze of tunneling
that not even a drunk could get truly lost in... Obviously, a city so
hell-bent on maximum-use and unadorned sterile efficiency would be offended
by many of the proposed rebuilds. I know I am.

Individual Projects:

Project:Foster And Partners - The Weird Crystalline Cathedral Thing
Assessment: Complete Loser

From the very first moment in their slide show, you just *know* these
guys are not from New York. Remember, on 9/11/2001, the very day of the
actual collapse, every single New Yorker I know was already cracking jokes
about the now defunct towers. This is not a city filled with a lot of tear
jerking philosophical moments where the band strikes up a warm melody for you
to cry over. This is the Efficiency Capitol Of The Universe, where dead
towers need to be cleared out, NOW GODDAMNIT, because they are BLOCKING
TRAFFIC.

They start out with this big, well, *huge* dreary memorial that
nobody in the city of New York is going to give a rats ass about (of course,
the politicians will just love it all to hell and back). I'll even go as far
as to predict that within five years of it's opening that memorial would
specialize in muggings and rapes after 6:00pm.

As we move on into our preview, we find this really strange
growing-thing overlooking what seems to me to be a cheap imitation of the
Vietnam Wall. The building itself is just *awful*: a kind of cross between a
strand of DNA trying to grow into something useful, and an echo of the now
DEAD towers trying to reassert their existence. Neither works. The original
towers are dead - let it go. The Crystalline Catherdral begs us to make
penance to it - to somehow go and seek it out for some kind of worship to the
past. Again, neither of these work. New Yorkers are not likely to give a
rats ass. In summation, the building itself has an intolerable ego, and the
memorial is disgusting in it's pompous disregard for the facts of life in
the city it is supposed to be *living* in.

Project:SOM, SANAA, et al. - The Vertical City groans
Assessment: Please take this project to Los Angelos, where it belongs.

First, allow me to give credit where credit is really due here. This
team has actually managed to capture what the WTC ended up becoming, although
not what it was originally envisioned as being. That said, this project is,
unfortunately, still a complete loss - may it rest in peace, FOREVER.

Starting in slide 3 we get what this team is all about, with the
quotation The city, as one finds it in history, is the point of maximum
concentration for the power and culture of a community. And they'll be
Goddamned if They are going to have to SHARE it with anyone outside of the
[new] WTC. Yeah. Riiighhht... I hate to be the one to break the news to
these guys, but one of the very few things that makes New York actually WORK,
is the free and open dissemination of The Arts (whatever the hell that
is). It's our ability to go wherever the hell

Many Worlds Version of Fermi Paradox

2002-12-30 Thread Tim May

in computability theory.
