Re: focus-follows-mouse in DT UI (Re: [darktable-user] Reversing history stack paste.)

2017-03-31 Thread Colin Adams
I can supply one scenario.

In darkroom, using the film-strip to select the photo to be edited.
If I press a Function key to set the colour label, or a numeric to set the
star rating, the setting is made on the photo which has the mouse pointer
over it in the film strip. Not the selected photo (i.e. the one visible in
the darkroom).
This seems wrong to me, and causes me problems. I've NEVER want to set the
rating for a photo that is not visible in the darkroom.

Here's another. In the lighttable, the Image information in the left-hand
pane shows the information for the photo under the pointer. Not the
selected photo. In this case, I can't see any other behaviour makes sense,
as there maybe multiple selections.

Hello Matthias,

Thanks for that tip. I have the identical graphics card and had the default
set, so i just changed it to 700 as you suggest.

How do you arrive at that figure?

Re: [darktable-user] 2.2.x for Fedora?

2017-01-09 Thread Colin Adams
So that explains why the fedora-supplied one doesn't work. One of the
requirements is 2.9 . Fedora repos supply 2.8.

Unless there's a 2.9 version available from Fedora that I don't know about.

Doesn't work (GIMP just displays the embedded JPEG).

My version of GIMP: 2.9.4 (from About).
rpm -q -f /usr/bin/gimp says not owned by any package.

I think I got it from:

_copr_nphilipp-gimp-unstable.repo

(at least, that's in yum.repos.d).

Re: [darktable-user] Colour shift with exposure fusion

2017-01-08 Thread Colin Adams
Oh, the tone curve doesn't have it.
I see the manual suggests using the exposure module in conjunction with
exposure fusion. I'll try that for now.

Jo, any chance of the blending/difference mode addition making it into a
2.2.x series release?

On Sat, 7 Jan 2017 at 19:51 Colin Adams <colinpaulad...@gmail.com> wrote:

Yes, thanks.
And I should probably use the tone curve rather than the base curve for
now, so I can use difference blend mode.

heya.

right, you would normally use blending/difference mode for this. seems
this isn't enabled for the base curve, probably for legacy reasons. i
enabled this in git master now.

not sure this helps you much though, exposure fusion will pretty much
change every pixel. i'd probably use the snapshot overlay to a/b the
effect, or switch the module on/off to flip.

if that was your question at all?

cheers,
 jo

[darktable-user] Colour shift with exposure fusion

Today I used exposure fusion for the first time. I was very pleased with
the result, but I failed to notice a colour shift in the highlights (I
noticed the colour shift in the very dark background, as that was exactly
what I was doing it for).

What's the easiest way to pick up colour shifts when turning on exposure
fusion? I guess any answer might be more general than just to exposure
fusion.

Re: [darktable-user] Automatically applying lens corrections?

2016-12-03 Thread Colin Adams
I compiled it myself. This was because I wanted lua support for export to
GIMP (and I use Fedora). I don't have a custom darktable.css in
~/.config/darktable.

I've just switched back to the Fedore rpm, in anticipation of lua support
arriving in the next few weeks (I don't anticipate wanting to export to
GIMP in the meantime), so this isn't an issue for me.

Those red borders indicate that your darktable.css is not compatible with
the
version of GTK that you are using. Did you compile dt yourself? Do you have
a
custom darktable.css in ~/.config/darktable/?

I see. The extra fields don't apply until I select the checkboxes.

But I can't get auto apply to kick-in. Perhaps I just don't understand
correctly when this should happen. I thought I could simply re-import a
film roll by clicking on import folder and selecting a folder, but this is
not applying the preset.

Is this because XMP files already exist?

If I try to create a new preset on the module, all fields are blank.

Thank you.
The gain sliders on the color balance module work brilliantly.
I try Ariel's suggestion of using colorize, but I found it easier to use
color correction. However this way works much better.

[darktable-user] Making a local colour change?

2016-09-14 Thread Colin Adams
I took this photo with flash:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f6bmy554la7quho/132441800.jpg?dl=0

and it is clearly overexposed in the foreground. Using the graduated
density module gives a very nice result, all except for the two large
yellow oval patches on the thorax - these should be a (yellowish) green.
The histogram for these areas shows that both the red and green channels
are blown out in these areas. But I guess I should be able to alter the
colour locally in some way (by reducing the red channel, and maybe some of
the green). What's the best module to use to do this?

Thanks.

But I'm having difficulties with this. I'm trying to use the exposure
module to give a negative exposure compensation within the range selected
by the mask.
The first difficulty i'm have is that the RGB values given by the colour
picker in the left pane (54, 59, 55) differ greatly from the values shown
by the colour picker tool for the parameteric mask in the exposure module
(9.0, 9.7, 9.1). Why are these different? Should I just ignore the colour
pick from the left pane?

Re: [darktable-user] A better starting-point for Nikon RAW-files

2016-07-31 Thread Colin Adams
So I tried this (I have a Nikon D810).

When selecting any of the generated icc profiles except the last one, I get
a message:
"unsupported input profile has been replaced by linear Rec709 RGB!"
So I selected the last one, and set unbreak input profile to 0.0 as you
instruct.
The resulting image indeed looks to have slightly better quality, but it
has a green cast.
This is with darktable 2.0.5-1 rather than 2.0.4. I'm doubtful if that
should be making the difference though.

Re: [darktable-user] A better starting-point for Nikon RAW-files

2016-07-26 Thread Colin Adams
That looks very interesting.
But I have a question. The image showed much less noise. But can you also
use profiled denoise with this approach, or is there an inherent conflict?
