Hi Al,

What you could try:

- Install the roboto fonts
- Use another theme
- Set Custom DPI in darktablerc, eg. screen_dpi_overwrite=120.0

Ignore Patrick.

Create your own style in a .css file under
`~/.config/darktable/themes`, you may have to create this directory.
If you want use an existing style and just add some tweaks, you may
import one. I have in my `~/.config/darktable/themes/mine.css`

@import url("orig/darktable-icons-grey.css");

*
{
  font-size: 10pt;
}

and `~/.config/darktable/themes/orig` is a symlink to the directory
where darktable's original CSS files ended up after installation.

Alternatively, you may edit one of the original style files (likely to
be overwritten by the next install), or copy one of them to
`~/.config/darktable/themes/`, using a different name, and edit to
your liking (won't benefit from future changes in the original files).

Then run Darktable, and choose the name of your style file in “⚙ / GUI
options / theme”.

Hi,
custom DPI is scaling all GUI elements, while CSS font-size mainly
affects the font size.

What's better? Don't know. Matter of taste... :-)

Yes, of course. I tried 3.x only briefly and all interface elements and
fonts look much too bulky for my taste. Using screen_dpi_overwrite I was
able to bring it back to a more economic 2.x looks, without bothering
with fonts.

Thank you all for your answers, I read here of the problem, when people
were compiling dt 3, but never thought that a repo-package has not an
easy way to set the fonts.

Is there a feature request for better setting the font size?

I changed already dpi with my XFCE, so this is fine for the most
programs, but not all and dt looks now unusable. So modifying dt may be
tricky, but now I know the possibilites.

Was there a conversion of darktablerc from 2 to 3? Did dt 3 install a
fresh darktablerc? Maybe I should start from a default darktablerc.

I do not know about XFCE, but when you're facing font problems
affecting multiple programs, then maybe you need to have a look at
fontconfig [1], an unfathomable rabbit hole... I tend to go to the
Arch Linux article on that [2] for help (being on Arch), YMMV.

At least some things have changed, e.g., the
`panels_collapse_controls` are different now, and have not been
converted automatically during upgrade (which would be hard to do in
general).

Darktable really lacks documentation, and I hate staring at videos
until the guy finally gets to the point I wanted to know, if ever.
One can neither search nor skim-read videos.

Hello,

This has been asked many times since 3.0 release.
The main and most relevant solution is to edit darktablerc (.config/darktable
for Linux, C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\darktable for Windows) and set
screen_dpi_overwrite=65 (seemed to work fine for some others, as for me, but
higher values might do it as well).
Thanks to the first user thata asked, I could fix this without having to ask
myself. ;-)

Well, it seems that the biggest the screen, the smallest the value.
On my Linux system with 32" TV as a monitor, 65 was the good value, while on my
Windows system with 24" monitor it was too small and I had to set it to 90.
Will re-read the threads about this issue, I maight have missed valuable
information.

Just to inform the readers about my simple solution, where you can
replace medit with your editor. I am aware that the solution Stefan
describes has a lot of advantages, but I think I do not need it.

sudo medit /usr/share/darktable/themes/darktable.css

In Ubuntu I changed line 163 to
font-size: 9pt;

It didn't work to change e.g. to 0.5em from 1em, but this is not a
problem. I am happy for the moment.

Is there a possibility to make scrollbars a little bit broader?

Which scroll bars do you mean?I'm using Linux and I found that the scroll bars
of the window are part of the window manager setup.

To that end I have

In $HOME/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css :-

===
*{
-GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: 1;
-GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: 1;
-GtkRange-slider-width: 13;
-GtkRange-stepper-size: 13;
}

===

Depending on your level of revision this may or may not work for you.

there is an aid to scrolling,

so you don't have to be "exactly" positioned on the scrollbar. It works
over the text rather than the scrollbar, maybe both, haven't tried.

but you surely are not selecting directories on the right side

ps: darktable does not use "folders", that's windows.

Patrick, the mouse wheel works and there is no difference, if I press
ctrl or alt or both. With a lot directories ;-) the wheel is not
comfortable too. Imagine I have 100s of directories and I have to
choose one in the last third.

BTW, can you explain the difference between folder and directory, for a
non-native English speaker I cannot see a difference. At the end it
counts for me, that it does what I want.

and they are displayed on the RIGHT ???

ctrl or alt will NOT work, requires

but, if we are talking about the "collect images" window on the LEFT, just
rolling the mouse-wheel works, is/are not required.

a directory is a container for files while a folder is for paper or
micro$oft speakers.

When I right mouse click on my XFCE desktop (or in my File Manager) it
offers the option of creating a new Folder (not Directory). Maybe it is
different on Patrick's system!

Thanks Anton,

I mean the scrollbar in lighttable on the right side or the
scrollbar on the right side when choosing a folder and I have to
scroll down. I I am not happy with the sensitivity of my Logitech
G403 mouse, played a lot with the settings of the mouse and did
some configuration with Windows, normally I use XUbuntu 19.10
(XFCE). Maybe I have to look for another theme, where the scrollbar
has more contrast, an alternative to a small scrollbar. Sometimes
it is hard to scroll down because I am not in the middle of the
scrollbar and nothing happens. This problem exists since I use an
UHD monitor.

Which scroll bars do you mean?I'm using Linux and I found that the
scroll bars of the window are part of the window manager setup.

To that end I have

In $HOME/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css :-

===
*{
-GtkScrollbar-has-backward-stepper: 1;
-GtkScrollbar-has-forward-stepper: 1;
-GtkRange-slider-width: 13;
-GtkRange-stepper-size: 13;
}

===

Depending on your level of revision this may or may not work for
you.

there is an aid to scrolling,

so you don't have to be "exactly" positioned on the scrollbar. It
works over the text rather than the scrollbar, maybe both, haven't
tried.

but you surely are not selecting directories on the right side

ps: darktable does not use "folders", that's windows.

Patrick, the mouse wheel works and there is no difference, if I press
ctrl or alt or both. With a lot directories ;-) the wheel is not

counts for me, that it does what I want.

The reason is that certain window systems try to be like MS-Windows. Sad
but true.

The correct term is "directory", even Microsoft knows that, the command
line on all MS-Systems requires "mkdir" or "cd" (for change directory),
and you list the contents of a directory with "dir" (and not with
"folder" (*)). This applies since MS-DOS had a hierarchical file system
until today.

(*) of course listing it by using its name is confusing, it's MS,
eventually (**). The intuitive command for "list" is "ls", of course.
But nobody expects and MS product to be intuitive, some people just get
used to it.

(**) But ok, also VMS (on a VAX) did that...

Best regards,
Michael

I'm not sure how this became a topic for this list, but the following is my
attempt to put it to rest (not to perpetuate it!):

A directory is a feature of a filesystem, which does just what the name
implies: listing of filenames and information related to accessing them.

A "folder" is a common feature of many modern graphical shells. It represents
to the user something you can use in a certain way as a receptacle for dragging
or "pasting" graphically represented files, as well as for accessing them. The
thing behind the "folder" is often a directory, but by now may also be any sort
of "virtual directory" for some other (possibly network related) purpose... the
important thing is that it represents a *mode of use* to users of graphical
shells. Due to the overwhelming use of this analogy, it may sometimes be used
to refer to directories even without the specific context of a graphical shell,
but for native speakers at least, the actual meaning is very easily understood.

AFAIK, Scrollbars of a program are not managed by the window manager.
They are governed by the toolkit (e.g., GTK). The program producing
the window, and the window manager, *may* use the same toolkit, and
your desktop environment *may* provide a means to modify its
configuration.
