Sting/Traffic openers with Jerry guesting??

2004-03-08 Thread JPollQs
Is there a good place to find out which 1993 Sting/1994 Traffic sets (opening
for GD) have Jerry guesting on guitar for the last song or two? This
information does not seem to be included on thejerrysite or deadlists. If you happen
to know whether or not he guested on any of these opening sets, I welcome you
letting me know. I'll be happy to compile this information and post it back

Revision#1 :Updated Notation For Ranch Rock 86

2003-11-09 Thread JPollQs
One of John Cipollinas cohorts chimed in with a few helpful corrections to
the personel lineups for the Zero and Problem Child sets on this day. All other
set notation remains the same as previously posted. The mystery keyboard
player for Problem Child is now identified and the trumpet player for Zero has
been added, in addition to a few other corrections to those two lineups. Stu

ISO information about Ranch Rock 9/7/86

2003-11-01 Thread JPollQs
I'm hoping some of you might be able to help with some peripherally Grateful
Dead related questions. I'm in search of any information about the various
Ranch Rock sets at Pyramid Lake on 9/7/86. Any band personel info, other than
John Cipollina, who I know played a bit with everyone that day, would be greatly
appreciated, as well as what order the bands played in. I've done extensive
Google searching on the show but all I came up with was the Zero and Kingfish
setlists. I found the shows listed on countless tapelists as well as etree, but
unfortunately no information, other than the date. Can anyone help with the
setlists for the other bands, ie, Mickey Hart The Daylights, Robert Hunter's
Mystery Band Problem Child. I'm also looking for a good quality online
image of the poster for this show if anyone can point me to one. I can find it
as a thumbnail size image, but nothing in better resolution. Basically, any
information, setlists, online photos or recollections, would all be welcome.

Thanks for any and all replies,

NRPS related questions + ISO 7/30/70 set 3

2003-10-13 Thread JPollQs
Can anyone here tell me what show that Relix CD release called Vintage NRPS
derived from? The liner notes neglect to say, but it sounds from that late
1970/early 1971 era with Garcia on pedal steel. I'm assuming it is from one of
the many Dead shows when the NRPS were opening. Anyone know which one for
sure?

In a related question, was the Relix LP of early NRPS material called Before
Time Began ever issued on CD? This was that LP that had the first 1969
demos of NRPS on one side and a bunch of wacky backwards experiments by Nelson on
the other. If it was issued on CD, is it still commercially available?

And finally, can anyone possibly help me with the tail end of the 7/30/70
Matrix show? I just located all of set 1 and set 2 from a very clean soundboard
reel source. It is exactly as listed at Deadlists, but it is unfortunately
missing that short 25 minute 3rd set of acoustic material. Here's what I'm
referring to specifically:

BandGrateful Dead
Venue The Matrix
LocationSan Francisco, CA
Date7/30/70

Set Three [25:26 +]
To Lay Me Down [6:20] ; [0:39] ; Dire Wolf [4:05] ; [0:07] ; Candyman [6:37]
; [0:09] % [1:05] % Rosalie McFall [3:35] % A Voice From On High [2:59] %
[0:34 Intro] ; Swing Low Sweet Chariot [2:50]

Anyone have this little sequence in reasonably good quality? I'd like to
complete my copy of this night as well as then circulate all three sets together.
This show is a lot of fun and doesn't seem to circulate much, especially in
good quality. The two sets I have are very nice quality and Garcia is on all of
it.

I'll get this circulating as soon as I can locate the missing piece. Any
help appreciated, Stu Hanson

When did Cage replace Garcia in NRPS?

2003-07-30 Thread JPollQs

was Jerry's last performance as a full time member of NRPS? Thanks for any help

question-Garcia Santana with ToP NRBQ 1/23/88 geneology?

2003-04-05 Thread JPollQs
I just recieved a nice 2CD set of the 1/23/88 Blues For Salvador Concert in
trade and I absolutely love it! Garcia and Santana smoke on these jams and
all the other musicians are great too. My question is - is this commonly
circulated from one particular source? And if it is, does anyone know the
equipment or geneology? It's what I consider a good, but not great
quality,1988 audience recording. It seems mastered from cassette as it has a
little hiss and its a little muddy at times, but overall the instruments and
vocals are clear and its got plenty of low end. Its extremely enjoyable and a
very high energy performance. My copy came without geneology information but
otherwise matches perfectly to the JerrySite list. The guy I got it from
didn't know. If anyone knows geneology or equipment, please let me know. Its
a great show and Garcia was obviously loving it. Here's the information I

setlists for the 9/34/67 Rio Nido shows?

2003-02-24 Thread JPollQs
Does anybody happen to have setlists for the Rio Nido shows on 9/3 9/4/67?
I checked the Deadlists site but only one song from each show is listed. I
located a two hour DAT, supposedly the soundboard feed from the 9/3/67 show
and I'd like to try and verify it's accuracy before spreading it around.
Please cc me directly too if posting a reply. Thank you, Stu

NRPS/DEAD @ Wesleyan U - 5/3/70 (new notation)

2002-09-19 Thread JPollQs

This will probably be of most interest to the oldtimers who can still enjoy
vintage audience recordings, those who collect 1970 recordings missing from
the Dead's vault or completists, not to mention the 1970 caretaker of
Deadlists.

I was recently given first generation reel to reel copies of The Dead and
NRPS at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT on May 3, 1970 to transfer into
the digital realm. I've checked Deadlists, Deadbase and The Compendium and I
think this is the first time the complete contents of the master reels are
together, as none of those listings include all of this material. I can also
shed light on who recorded it, the accurate song order and how it probably
came into circulation (partially) years ago.

According to notes written on the first gen reels, the three original master
reels were recorded by a Wesleyen student named Warren White as part of an
assignment for a Professor Schenk (we think thats how its spelled. The
handwriting on the reel cases is difficult to read). There were originally
three master reels altogether, two half-hour reels and one hour-long reel,
all recorded at 1 7/8ips. Those master reels were borrowed from Schenk by
another student (in the late 1970’s) and dubbed to 1st generation reels by my
wife's uncle - Alan Bershaw. Without a deck that would run at 1 7/8ips, Alan
said he played the master reels back at 3 3/4 ips while recording them onto
reels at 7 1/2 ips, which allowed him to play back his first generation reels
at 3 3/4 ips - at the correct speed.

At that time, several 90 minute cassettes (of the last 90 minutes, including
all the Dead material) were given to friends of Alan's and to the guy who
borrowed the master reels from Schenk. Currently circulating copies likely
originated from those 2nd generation cassette dubs, many probably way down
the line since this all happened in the late 70's.

If Deadlists/Deadbase/Compendium is correct on what circulates, this new copy
includes all of this material possibly for the first time. While this is
still far from a great recording and its still probably incomplete, its
likely an improvement over all the currently circulating copies. There are
also no butchered songs and no reel stops/starts between songs like most
audience recordings of this time. The geneology on this new copy is:

Master Audience Reels@1 7/8 ips (played back @3 3/4 ips)- Reels@7 1/2 ips
(then played back @3 3/4 ips to correct speed on Revox A-77)-[EMAIL PROTECTED]

It should also be noted for context that this is the night before the Kent
State shootings, which is significant in light of the various announcements
on these recordings.

Over the next week or two (I'm in the midst of moving my family, but once I'm
settled), I plan on making the first CDR copies of this. When I get that
done, I'll post again for some BPs and trades to get these moving. But in
the meantime, here's the complete information on what exists here.

Cheers,
Stu Hanson

Thanks for the information Peter! I passed it on to Alan and here's a reply.
Better information is already available thanks to your reply. I couldn't
decipher some of that handwriting on the reels so that helped a lot with the
Proffessor's name. I'll update the notes accordingly. I don't know if this
being from first gen reels as apposed to a first gen cassette would make much
of a difference on a recording of this quality, but maybe a close comparison
should be made? You also now have me wondering where proffessor Charles
Lemert might be and if the master reels still exist.

Wow, very cool! Thanks for passing that on. Yeah, what Peter says rings of
truth and admittedly 1975 to the late 80s are kinda one big blur of fun and
self abuse to me, so it could've been the 80s when they were transfered.

Although its been a long time, and I do recall good times trading with Peter,
at some point the master reels were borrowed by another guy who either went
to Wesleyan and lived off-campus or just lived in Middletown. I can't
remember his name but I met him at a Hot Acoustics gig (I was mixing and he
asked for a board patch) in some cafeteria-like room on campus. Anyway, we
began chatting it up and I mentioned those tapes and shortly afterwards he
rang me up to come get the reels at his apartment. At that point they went to
reel copies. I think the speed notation is all correct, but again its a
blurry memory at best. Back then my basic rule of thumb was if it came on
reels it was worth keeping on reels and I rarely ever transfered cassettes to
reels. Anyway, thats where the reels you borrowed from me originated.

My regards to Peter, Alan

In a message dated 9/19/02 5:50:51 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Stu and all: I know the REAL story on this show and those reels. Why?

Because I am the student your story refers to, and Alan Bershaw got those

cassettes from me -- he and I possess the two first-generation cassette

copies that exist, unless somebody has had a crack at the reels again since

I did them in 1985. Here is the full story, as I had sent it to Noah Weiner

a few months ago when the question arose.

I seeded this show when I was a junior at Wesleyan in 1985. I had early on

fallen into trading with Alan Bershaw, whom some of the old-timers probably

know. According to Alan, during the May '70 tour, the band used campus

equipment to save money whenever possible, and for whatever reason Wesleyan

did not hook up a recorder at the board. That made this show all but

impossible to find until I decided to do a little digging. (Digging, digging

... Hey, what are these? Some funny little mushrooms? No, that's not what

I'm looking for ... where are those tapes?!)

The Wesleyan show took place during a student strike, which, incidentally,

my cousin Mark Shapiro '70 helped organize, to protest the war. (Mark's a

big conservative lawyer now, needless to say.) The recording deck was an old

reel-to-reel Uher machine owned by sociology professor Charles Lemert

(correct name and spelling), who lent it to me, along with the original

reels, when I asked. Anyway, at the show, the portable Uher was passed

around, which explains the hilarious banter among the crowd, and the

apparent inability to read a clock. If you've ever struggled through this

show, you know what I'm talking about. It was conceived, according to

Lemert, as a sociological document, not a concert recording. In any event, I

know nothing of the microphones.

The sloping lawn behind the administration building is actually called

Foss Hill. At Wesleyan, it's not entirely clear where Foss Hill ends and

the baseball/football field smack-dab in the center of campus begins, but in

any case, just calling it Foss Hill would certainly be accurate enough.

Twelve years later, as a freshman, I would stand in that exact spot and take

photographs of Art Blakey. (Wesleyan got some pretty cool acts.)

The lineage certainly would begin with Master Audience Reel (NOT cassette),

and I have my original first-gen cassette copy if anybody would like a

verified lowest-available-gen seed (which would be AUD: MR C CD). But if

you've heard the quality, you may want to pass.

I'd be happy to try to answer any other questions on this, as I suspect I'm

the closest thing to the original source out here.

pb

P.S. For trivia buffs, Wesleyan is also the alma mater of John Perry Barlow,

who was class president in '69, and Bill Belichick '75.

DIGA Rehearsals 5/4/75 T.C. 10/27/84

2002-09-04 Thread JPollQs

I sent this to a few Dead-related trading lists and thought Deadlists may
appreciate the information if TC or Mickey recordings are documented
anywhere. Stu

I'm surfacing after a break in trading because I've discovered two cool Dead
related obscurities that I've never seen on anyone's lists before. One is a
small club solo concert by ex-Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten. I transfered
Alan Bershaw's cassette masters of this to CD. The other is a one hour 1/4
track reel he had of Mickey Hart and DIGA rehearsing on May 4, 1975 and is
excellent studio quality. The details follow.

If anyone would like to trade for one or both of these recordings, I'm
particularly interested in finding any live recordings by Diga (I know they
did a few shows in 75), any Kieth Donna Band sets with Jerry from 1975 and
also looking for complete copies of both of the Dead's New Orleans shows from
1980 from between the Warfield and RCMH runs. Otherwise, please send a trade
list. I'll also take one BP from each list to help get these circulating.

2002-08-12 Thread JPollQs

I spent some time listening to the Deads June 10 1973 RFK jamset#3 and I like
it a lot but I'm questioning the presence of Merle Saunders on keyboards. I
know its documented that way in all the most reliable places but it sounds
like only one keyboard to me - Keith on piano. I checked out the great
soundboard and then a good audience and I couldnt hear any organ at all.
Taking into consideration that Dickey Betts and the Allman drummers are so
obviously on this set, wouldnt it make more sense to be Chuck Levell or even
Greg Allman other than Merle in the case Keith mightve sat this out? Anyone
with firsthand experience on this question?

Marin County Collective/Area Code 415?

2002-04-13 Thread JPollQs

Can anybody educate me about those unreleased Marin County Collective
recordings that Mickey Hart and various Dead and Bay Area musicians did
between his Rolling Thunder and Diga albums? I'm told they were recorded
during 1972-73. I think this is also known as Area Code 415 sessions and a
few early studio versions of Fire On The Mountain with Mickey singing are
included. Know what I mean?

Does anyone have a tracklist for this material, when and where it was
recorded or who's playing on what? Any information or link to information
would be welcome.

4/14/71 question about Other OneWharf Rat

2002-03-26 Thread JPollQs

I know I came to the right place with this question!

Can anyone who has the 4/14/71 (Lewisburg, PA) SBDMRCDATCD lineage do me a
favor and spot check something for me? My copy, which seems fine otherwise,
has a disturbing screeching sound and a lot of distortion beginning
immediately out of drums into The Other One which continues through Wharf
Rat. Then the show if fine again.

Since this is one of few circulating high quality shows not reviewed in the
Compendium or Addendum, I'm trying to determine if its the nature of the
recording or a bad burn on disc #2 of my copy.

Any replies appreciated, Stu

Re: another interesting anthem note

does anyone know if there is any plans to release the original anthem or
aoxomoxoa on cd? i have the vinyl on both, but i no longer have a turntable.

I think the original Anthem mix is the one used for the recently released
Rhino box set Anthem CD. I agree that Aoxomoxoa's 1969 mix is worthy of
release. Not sure I like it better, but its a lot weirder and other-worldly,
thats for sure.Stu

The Santa Venetia Keith Rehearsals

2002-01-03 Thread JPollQs

I was transfering reel to reel copies of the 4 days of 1971 rehearsals (prior
to the first tour with Keith G) for a friend and I noticed a few
discrepencies and missing songs on the listings at Deadlists. I don't know
who maintains 1971 but I think this information may be useful.

Also if anyone has a nice clean copy of the 9/30/71 rehearsals that includes
all 10 songs, please get in touch. That reel broke during transfer and had to
be spliced back together, damaging one tune. (The 10 songs total 51 minutes,
so it can easily fit on a CD)

Here's what I think are the complete songlists, with notes where applicable
to Deadlists.
