FTP client GUI that handles AUTH-TLS
I had been looking for a while for an FTP GUI that handles AUTH-TLS without much luck -- KBear doesn't (and nobody is working on it), and while GFTP supposedly does, the Debian version doesn't and I wasn't able to build it. Kasablanca (http://kasablanca.berlios.de/download.html) builds without problems -- I do this routine: 1. ./configure 2. dh_make -s 3. fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage Builds beautifully on amd64 and works on an FTP site requiring AUTH-TLS if you set it to passive mode and level 3 encryption. Uploads and downloads work. There is still a debilitating problem: newly uploaded files aren't displayed in the file list. It seems to happen when the date shows an hour rather than a year. Hopefully a minor thing that can be fixed. Aside from that, the program is clean and good-looking. The file management features aren't quite there yet, but it has a good solid feel. pftp of course handles AUTH-TLS with no problems. complete new install
Hi there, I'm new to this list and first of all want to thank everybody involved in the development of the AMD64 port. I upgraded my personal server from a double PII to a small Athlon64 system. First of all I'd like to suggest adding a new mainboard to the compatibility list. Attached you can find the necessary info. I tested everything but the sound an the SATA part with success. After installation out of the box via netinst-image I have some questions: 1) data-transfer from disk to disk seems to be very slo and cpu conduming. copying huge files from USB-disk to IDE-disk ist very very slow with a load of nearly 90%. It seems to be independent from the filesystemtype - it's the same for FAT32 and NTFS sources. 2) I have trouble getting that cool'n'quiet thing running. As the powernow-daemon relies on the /sys-filesystem i suggest defaulting it in the kernel-images. I installed the sysfsutils package but can't get the /sys-filesystem working. Especially the cpu-freq part is not available. the sysfsutils-daemon fires up, but powernow doesn't. ANY SUGGESTIONS? Greetings Uwe PS: Whenever you try to use a harddrive previously used in a Sun with a sundisklabel ERASE it completely. The netinst shows a very strange behaviour until you entirely scrubb your harddisk. VLC and Mplayer issues
Evening all, Is anything being done about the installation of VLC (which currently depends on libflac4, which is uninstallable), or has it been lost by the way side? Also, how do I go about getting support for wmv files in Mplayer on AMD64? Am I right in thinking I need a chroot and to run Mplayer as 32bit? That would be a shame... In fact, if I recall correctly .2.gcc4 was re-uploaded to the repository (I presume recompiled as well). I think I'm using the earlier copy. Unfortunately it didn't survive a recent apt-get clean, so I can't make it available for someone to test, but somebody might still have a copy in his or her /var/cache/apt dir. Re: dpkg SEGFAULT with upgrade using gcc-3.4 (or 4.0) repos
May I suggest you recompile dpkg? This might solve your immediate problems and, if not, try to compile it with symbols to see where it's breaking. You might also want to try using a static linked or ia32 dpkg. Re: dpkg SEGFAULT with upgrade using gcc-3.4 (or 4.0) repos
Javier Kohen just asked (I'm not subscribedto this list anymore, so I saw his post on google news) what version of libc6 I'm using. I _think_ (since dpkg is not allowing me to check) that I'm using libc6_2.3.2.ds1-20.0.0.2.gcc4_amd64.deb, although libc6_2.3.2.ds1-20.0.0.3.gcc4_amd64.deb was in the process of being installed (I'm not sure if it was unpacked yet or not). And as far as backtracing the dpkg SEGFAULT in gdb, I had tried that, but as he mentioned, since there are no debugging symbols, there is nothing but memory addresses. I cannot reproduce this using the gcc-4.0 archive and my version of dpkg seems to be the same than yours. Also note that given that you already took the time to run the program inside gdb, it usually helps a bit to have a backtrace (command bt) to know a bit more about where the program is when it fails. However, when programs don't have debug symbols and are optimized, as it's probably the case here, it won't tell much. I can be a tester
Hello. I have a computer which has an amd64 3000+ as processor, and i've been waiting for a while for the next debian which supports AMD64s. For the moment, I haven't found anywhere where I can download the testings for amd64s. That's why I agree to become a tester for debian amd64 architectures. So, well, there you go =D PS: if you know where can try out debian for amd64s, please send me the link. PPS: is the 'unstable' really that unstable? Or is it simply 'not as stable' as the stable versions or the testing ones? Thx. -- N-0-X, webmaster de http://www.noxistes.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: KDE Konqueror woes
I've definitely considered the lightweight wm route. I've heard a lot about fluxbox lately. For 90% of my tasks (coding/browsing/email/IM), they work just fine. The part where I've seen issues is on the other "features" that come along with a wm that is tied together in the background--which ultimately leads to complexity and the issues we deal with. When considering multiple screens configuration, sound demons, and getting various apps to talk well together, I find myself wanting a more bloated wm like KDE. If this was a computer at work or a laptop, then I think a lightweight wm would be fine. But for my home machine, I want the extra "features". Anyway, I haven't had some of the issues you've seen--just this file browsing one. Everything else is working great which is the only thing that makes me stay. The multi-monitor/virtual desktop capabilities of KDE are simply awesome and that's a big deal to me. File browsing and playing movies are my two biggest headaches/shortcomings on this machine. I have seen threads on the net about people giving up on fam and disabling it. As a result, you have to pause when entering directories occasionally, but its usually better than Konqueror freezing. I've been running without famd for a few weeks, but experienced Konqueror locking up again. So I enabled, famd. As usual, it worked for a while then the famd process went bad. '/etc/init.d/famd stop' nor 'kill -9' can stop the process and restore order. Anyone else see this issue? Not sure if it might relate to our x86 platform, just a KDE issue, or just my crazy issue. It is getting quite annoying having no file browser. Granted I'm more of a commandline person myself, but the file browser is of use occasionally. Overall, my experience with KDE was better than that of gnome. More things just worked out of the install. So I'd prefer to stick with KDE if only I can resolve this fam issue. Hi Rob I confess I've rather fallen out with KDE - it currently seems to launch multiple windows for no reason that I've been able to fathom. It also crashes occasionally and kwrite has sometimes screwed up files when saving to a samba share. I too, couldn't get on with Gnome - I tried to like it but KDE seemed more intutitive. I've just done a fresh install on another partition to experiment with 'light' wm's. I've not approached this in a particularly scientific manner and tried FVWM, which I'd seen mentioned on the list but I found it too light; maybe it's configurable to do what I want but I haven't got eons of time to experiment. Next up, after a bit of googling I tried xfce . and so far, I'm very impressed. It has multiple desktops and is quite intuitive but most of all it is lightning quick compared to the KDE environment. I'm sure it's not for everyone but if you've got to the point where you want to move beyond KDE, I'd give it a try. I'm writing this on the KDE system in mutt but impatient to get all my apps and configuration sorted on the new system .. maybe tonight ;) Regards Clive

like for /home add a bind mount to /mnt or whateever directory includes your mount points but not the mount points itself. i guess this should work fine with bind mounts knue On Wednesday 16 March 2005 09:49, Robert King wrote: > Hello All, > > I have openoffice running in a 32 bit chroot and things are working > smoothly, except that it can't open files on removable media, because it > only has bind mounts to /tmp and /home. > > I tried adding a bind mount for the directory in /media, but then I had > trouble mounting and unmounting the removable media as an ordinary user. > > Any ideas - or is there something else I should be doing and not mucking > about with this approach at all? > > Ta, > Robert pgpkyrHVvowKD.pgp Description: PGP signature

Re: How do I bind mount removable media to my 32 bit chroot
I had this problem running Cedega in a chroot, accesing CD-Roms etc. What I did might work for you: 1. comment out the mounts in /etc/fstab to do with whatever device you want mounted in the chroot. (and unmount if its already mounted) 2. put entry similar to this in your /var/chroot/sid-ia32/etc/fstab (or whatever your chroot directory is): /dev/hdc/mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,users, noauto 0 0 ** make sure the mount point exists in the chroot (i.e. mine is /var/chroot/sid-ia32/mnt/cdrom ) 3. insert your media, and "mount /mnt/cdrom" when you're in your chroot (you should be able to do it as a user now, but you might need to set permissions of /dev/hdc and /mnt/cdrom -- and I cant remember what these are. Once you've done this, you should be able to mount/unmount from within the chroot fine. I used to have it set up as a bind, and it didnt work, but this worked for me. Hope it works!
