So, that would also make programs that rely on /etc/group being used
buggy. IIRC, when I want to add a local group with addgroup, it checks
first if it exists with getgrnam, and refuses to create it if it can
be found. And this is an error if the group exists on NIS, but not
locally in /etc/groups.

Also, I wonder if the following is the correct behavior (grname is a
program that calls getgrgid or getgrnam depending on the argument):

$ ./grname doctex
42 (doctex)
$ ./grname 42
42 (shadow)

In the NIS database, group 42 is "doctex", but locally, it is "shadow".
My /etc/nsswitch.conf contains in particular:

group: compat nis

IMHO, since /etc/group has the priority and group 42 exists here, then
the group "doctex" shouldn't have been visible.

Note that AFAIK, these mismatches are not avoidable when one wants to
use a Debian machine in a NIS network and when the administrators of
the machine and the network are not the same.

It sounds like the usb drivers don't like your hardware for some reason.
Could you firstly check that it is plugged in properly. Then see if you
can reproduce this problem, you could try the 2.6.11 kernel from
unstable.

Bug#314574: documentation missing from deb packages

2005-06-17 Thread Drew Parsons
Package: lam
Severity: normal

The man page for lam refers to the "User's Guide". But there is no such
document in all the lam packages. lam-mpidoc only provides man pages.
lam4-dev provides a user's guide to ROMIO, but not to LAM proper.

I can see the document in the source, at lam-7.1.1/doc/user.pdf. Can you
please include it? Should anything else be included, for instance install.pdf?

I don't know which of the lam packages user.pdf should go into, so I'm
filing this bug against the source package.

Might be nice to register the user's guide with doc-base while you're at it,
so we can access it from dhelp.

Thanks,

Drew Parsons

Yes. You can just reuse the debian/ directory from testing or unstable.

I DO NOT recommand to install this version since it is a work in
progress. All you need is check that it corrects your bug. Just do:
$ ./configure
$ make
$ ./jpilot

If it works I will try to release a new upstream version and then a new
Debian package.

I'd suspect that the partition was a bit foo-bar.
But perhaps there was an ext3 change that causes this.
I've reassigned it to e2fsprogs, Ted's the maintainer

Bug#313378: Ubuntu status

2005-06-17 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

Indeed I tried to apply various patches to the esound Ubuntu package,
but none of them helped so far. The bug is really in esound, it does
not work well with the new ALSA library, which enables dmix by
default.

Indeed direct gstreamer -> ALSA output (or applications outputting
directly to ALSA), and polypaudio work just fine, so this really seems
to be an esound problem.

We already thought of switching to polypaudio completely. It has some
nice features, but still needs a bit of stabilization. I coordinated
this with Otavio Salvador, who recently uploaded polypaudio to Debian
experimental (sitting in NEW ATM, I suppose). However, if the new
esound upstream version fixes the dmix problem, that would be much
appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

Bug#291026: One more tweak

2005-06-17 Thread Thomas Hood
reopen 291026
severity 291026 minor
thanks

First of all, thanks for addressing the issue.

Version 3.6.2.0 of policy section 9.3.3.2 contains this code as an
example of how to test for the availability of a utility:

if which invoke-rc.d >/dev/null 2>&1; then
...

As I mentioned earlier, I think that policy would do a bit better to
follow the example of debhelper and test the executability of the file
reported by which. As discussed before, the which program sometimes
prints filenames that don't have their executable bits set. The
resulting code is not much more complex.

if [ -x "$(which invoke-rc.d 2>/dev/null)" ] ; then
...

Obviously this is a minor issue, though.

No, it isn't. At least in the Debian installer. The only way to boot from

Bug#314577: mercurial: Please spell out the abbreviation in the synopsis

2005-06-17 Thread Heikki Kantola
Package: mercurial
Version: 0.5b+20050612-2
Severity: minor

The current short description for mercurial says "scalable distributed
SCM". However, when you first see that, I would assume that most
people will wonder about what the is a "SCM"? From the longer
description, I learned this abbreviation stands for "Source Control
Management". Although, the Debian policy advocates for short synopsis
descriptions, it also says the description should be as informative as
possible. The abbreviation spelled out would still be short enough
and far more informative. Also I think it would be more stylish to
start the description with capital letter.

When building 'ksh' on amd64/unstable with gcc-4.0,

Hi Nigel,

The problem may well have arisen from an underlying iptables problem --
I never configured the package, just installed it to remind me it
exists, with a plan to get around to it at some point. I generally
assume packages will do no harm, though they may not do any good until I
give them some attention. Even if a package fails badly, it obviously
shouldn't crash the system. Unfortunately we won't know now if ifkongfu
was the culprit, as I'm not in a position to experiment with this
machine for the next four months. I think it's extremely unlikely the
problem applies to all amd64 installations, but it will no doubt take
some work to narrow it down.

If we assume ipkungfu was at fault, we have this scenario:

-- it runs (even if ineffectually) for a week with no incident
-- out of the blue it crashes the whole system

There wasn't a trace in the logs, and I wasn't doing anything unusual.
This could be very hard to track down, so I really don't think it's
worth considering this a serious bugreport unless someone else runs into
a similar behavior. Appreciate your friendly reply though! I may be
able to return to this in the fall.

Dave

Thanks for the additional information, Paul.

I noticed that the bug occurs only in a quite specific situation, namely
after the file selection widget is called for opening/saving scripts.

If you do just this:

[main window] Control -> New Praat script
[script window] File -> Close

then there is no crash. However, if you do either:

[main window] Control -> Open Praat script...
[file selection window] Cancel
[script window] File -> Close

or

[main window] Control -> New Praat script
[script window] File -> Open
[file selection window] Cancel
[script window] File -> Close

then there is a crash.

It seems that opening and closing the file selection widget introduce
some memory manipulation problem, which manifests itself when the
script window is closed. Motif seems to be insensible to the problem,
while Lesstif isn't, unless it is a genuine Lesstif bug.

Eep, yes that sounds broken. Does this happen with the 4.2.1/4.2.2

Ok, I'm downgrading this bug, because I was mistaken.

The last version of gnumeric does not have this problem.

However, could you please change the soname when the ABI change ?
It would prevent such problems.

You're right, sorry.

> 1. How useful is it

In advi, you can hit "w" to switch between document view and sliced view. I
find it very useful (since otherwise I think it must be done withing emacs).
What's more, the default mode (slice by section) is a bit puzzling for
people who would like to see the "real" layout.

Moreover, it is documented, and the user can be surprised that it doesn't
work (which was my case).

> 2. Would it break existing behavior?

This advice actually comes straigth from upstream (I'm his phd student). If
you browse the source, you will notice that this value will be set to false
for any viewer which is not advi (barring any bug). So the change should
have no effect, except for advi.

Thanks for providing this patch. At the moment I adapt it to the
upstream cvs of inkscape, since a new version will be released soon. I
probably won't fix it in the version currently in debian, since sarge is
released and the changes don't have a chance to make it into sarge.

Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n

Hi,

/usr/share/modconf contains all translations which take more than 3 MB
of disk space. Usually only one is needed. It should be possible to
choose.

Bug#314587: icewm: Xmgrace windows can not be closed any more

2005-06-17 Thread Oliver Heinen
Package: icewm
Version: 1.2.21-1
Severity: important

After upgrading my testing Debian tody (only the packages icewm
and icewm-common were upgrades) I encountered problems with
the xmgrace application, package grace. Xmgrace opens a new window
for each selected tool / option. After a random number ( 0 - 10 )
of these windows are closed correctly, on closing a windows only the
content of the window vanishes while the frame stays on the
desktop. Once this has happened no window (of this application)
can be closed any more and one ends up with a desktop full of
dead windows. Xmgrace itself keeps running without problems. When
opening a dead windows again (choosing the option) it is correctly
displayed in the old frame after minimizing and maximizing the frame.

After downgrading icewm and icewm-common to 1.2.20+21pre1-3
everything works fine again. The below system inforamtion
is after downgrading. The hardware is a Pentium 4 PC with a
Matrox G550 dual head graphics adapter (Xinerama).

Cheers ... nevertheless, icewm is great thing ... ;-)

Hi,

apparently digikam and digikamimageplugins install full documentation
in /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML. In all languages where usually only one is
needed. This uses up about 100 MB of valuable /usr space.

It should be a separate doc package, and the language(s) should be
selectable.

In case you use apache1, this is documented in the README.Debian.

A new upstream version is available from

It has a new way of parsing http Logfiles, so it's very possible this issue
is solved.

Please tell me if it fixes the problem.

Yup, I know this is something we need to do and I'm going to try and fix
up some more of the minor packaging bugs this evening to try and get
them uploaded into unstable.

I have this problem too.

It only affects 8.0, 7.4 still works.

If I add this line:

to the config file '/etc/postgresql/8.0/main/postgresql.conf' it works again.

Was trying to boot vmlinuz-2.4.27-2-sparc64 on workstation type machine
with Type 6 USB keyboard which is like PC or Apple USB keyboard.

Trying to use installation set to rescue /dev/ as can no longer boot 2.4
since 2.6 devfs cleaned out mount point so 2.4 will not boot.

The uname -a is the system running on hard disc and not the cdrom as I
could not enter any commands with the cdrom boot.

Bug#314592: smbldap-tools: README.Debian not up to date

2005-06-17 Thread root
Package: smbldap-tools
Version: 0.8.7-4
Severity: minor

First of all thank you for the nice package!

The README.Debian contains information on how to change the first
uid and gid used for smbldap-tools:
 ---snip---
> **NOTE**: This makes the tool start adding uids and gids from 1000 (hardcoded
> default), if you want to start from different numbers you can modify the
> uidNumber or the gidNumber with a script like that:

> UID_NUM=2000
> GID_NUM=2000
> ldapmodify -x -W -D "cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com" << EOF
> dn: cn=NextFreeUnixId,dc=example,dc=com
> changetype: modify
> replace: uidNumber
> uidNumber: $UID_NUM
> -
> replace: gidNumber
> gidNumber: $GID_NUM
> EOF
 ---snip---

This is no longer necessary. In fact for 0.8.7 and up it is wrong
because the attributes uidNumber and gidNumber are now stored in
the object
 "dn: sambaDomainName=MYWINDOWSDOMAIN,dc=example,dc=com"
instead of
 "dn: cn=NextFreeUnixId,dc=example,dc=com"

Now you can simply use "-g -u " as options to
smbldap-populate.

cheers

Bug#314591: Please include upstream patch for threads in applets

2005-06-17 Thread Joachim Breitner
Package: python-gnome2-extras

Hi,

For version 2.11.0, upstream has fixed Bug
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=168057, which caused
gnome-applets not being able to run threads. The fix is trivial, the
following patch is pulled from

I need this to hack Category support in gnome-blog, and I'm sure that
there are / will be more applet that need threads to combine network stuff
and UI responsiveness.

Thanks,

Bug#314596: Cannot ssh OUT from host as non-root user

2005-06-17 Thread Alistair Cockeram
Package: ssh
Version: 1:3.8.1p1-8.sarge.4
Severity: important

Since carefully upgrading to Sarge from an uptodate Woody install I can no
longer ssh out as a non root user to any other host. I can still ssh out
as root with no issues. The installation in question is running in a
vserver. Another vserver on the same box does not have the same
behaviour. The working vserver was running testing prior to sarge being
released and was then upgraded to sarge with no issues.

Note: ssh IN to the server is working ok.

Example behaviour:

$ssh -o 'StrictHostKeyChecking no' 127.0.0.1
Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive).
$

$ ssh -o 'StrictHostKeyChecking no' xxx.xxx.org
Permission denied, please try again.
Permission denied, please try again.
Permission denied (publickey,password,keyboard-interactive).

And the auth.log for that host:

Bug#314595: vim-common: typo (maybe copy'n'paste error) in /usr/share/vim/vim63/doc/filetype.txt

2005-06-17 Thread Ralf Doering
Package: vim-common
Version: 1:6.3-071+1
Severity: minor

There is a simple typo (maybe because auf copy and paste) in the
documentation of the filetype plugin (filetype.txt). In the section
about changelog-plugin (:help changelog-plugin) the wrong file to be
loaded (ftplugin/man.vim instead of ftplugin/changelog.vim)
is mentioned. This bug exists upstream up to the latest patch for vim63.

A simple patch against upstream sources to correct this:

Bug#276937: jack: --submit should not request email address every time

2005-06-17 Thread James R. Van Zandt

Michael -

I suppose one could identify two cases:
 - If the default address came from a jack configuration file or a
jack-specific environment variable like JACK_EMAIL then no prompt
should be needed.
 - If the default address came from a generic environment variable
EMAIL or even [EMAIL PROTECTED] /etc/mailname` then there is a greater chance
the default is wrong, so a prompt is called for.

However, I don't think the first point is a strong one. I.e.:

> default is correct.

Your subject says "--submit should not request email address every
time" but what you really want is just being able to fill in an
appropriate default, right? You don't mind being prompted for the
email address as long as the default is correct. Or should jack not
prompt at all when $EMAIL or some config variable is set?

Bug#314597: zsh segfaults randomly when tabcompleting file with lots of spaces

2005-06-17 Thread Frode E. Moe
Package: zsh
Version: 4.2.5-7
Severity: normal

Hi, while dealing with a virus attachment to an email I received, zsh
segfaulted while tabcompleting the file name.

The file name is:
instructions.htm
  .scr

(i.e. "instructions.htm" + a lot of spaces + ".scr", obviously an
attempt to trick windows users into running an executable).

I haven't found a way to reproduce this every time, but the following
seems to trigger a segfault after a few iterations:

touch instructions.htm\ \ \ \ \ \ lots of spaces \ \.scr
mkdir k
mv ins k
mv ins k
strings ins

Bug#314598: xvfb: should depend on xfonts-base

2005-06-17 Thread Peter Palfrader
Package: xvfb
Version:
Severity: normal

Hi,

I guess xvfb should depend on xfonts-base. Most (all?) x apps do need
some font or another. Reason I found this is that python-matplotlib (an
unofficial package) FTFBS without xfonts-base installed. It build
depends on xvfb only. If you disagree I'll ask the maintainer to also
build-dep on xfonts-base.

You're right. My "correction" is completly bogus here. But after changing
s/Speichen/Speichern/ quite often (in other documents where it was
indeed false) it seems I changed this blindly.
Remember that I fixed more typos than I introduced, you revised it and
found new ones, ... a great process.

Well, it doesn't "still" work, but "already". Since the 7.4 version
wasn't stuck in NEW, the fixed version is already in Sid. :-)

Confirmed, that's a good workaround. It doesn't do any harm with the
fixed packages either.

Hi, I'm the maintainer of Wesnoth in Debian. Wesnoth uses libzipios and
users are reporting crashes on amd64 caused by it. It looks like zipios
has some broken typedefs for uint32. The attached patch should fix it,
can you apply them to your package.

Bug#314600: bacula-directory-pgsql - inserts raw filenames into db

2005-06-17 Thread Bastian Blank
Package: bacula-director-pgsql
Version: 1.36.3-1
Severity: important

The director fails to write files into the db. I setup the PostgreSQL
with Unicode as charset, so the bacula db inherit this encoding if not
explicitely overwritten.

Now it don't filter the filenames and fails to insert them with the
following error:

catreq.c:346 Attribute create error. sql_create.c:685 Create db Filename record

Hi Davide,

Sorry -- I should have looked more closely. I've tested on
2.6.12-rc6 and indeed the problem isn't there. Looking at
the kernel patches, I see the fix came in 2.6.9 (Oct 04).

Joey, Mike,

I will add a note under BUGS to the man page to point
out this bug in older kernels. That will appear in
man-pages-2.04.

Cheers,

Michael

Yes, indeed, that is how Open Source should work, I just added some
corrections to the xfce de.po diff. There are limits to the
possibilities "semi-automatic" scripts offer and your efforts not only
reduce typos but also draw attention to possible problems (as I normally
don't look at translations but use english). I wrote that part mainly
back to you because I hoped that you could suggest a nice german word,
since Speiche sounds a little clumsy to me. So do "Strahl", "Zacke",
"Zahn" in the context of stars.
I just asked because you were the one drawing my attention to this. It

Bug#314603: azureus: Extremely annoying, useless "possible network disconnect/reconnect" message

2005-06-17 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
Package: azureus
Version: 2.3.0.2-1
Severity: minor

Azureus has, for some braindamaged reason or another, the very dubious
feature of poping up a window notifying you every time one of its tcp
connections get an unexpected close. The damned thing pops up on *all*
desktops, at the topmost layer. It can't get more disruptive than this.

There is no rate limiting for those windows. You have to close them one by
one, and after 24h of activity or so, there can be quite a lot of them open.

They are completely useless, since azureus restarts the connection in the
first place, and busy links are quite likely to cause some TCP connections
to be closed by one of the sides apparently.

Please kill that error message, make it a debug message to the debug log
where it belongs.

While at it, please remove the "open on all desktops" features of all
error message windows as well.

Bug#227025: Bug #227025 - dictd refuses to start

2005-06-17 Thread browaeys . alban
There are more than three bugs in :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=227025

Would you agree to clone it in three bugs to help taking care of
the issue separately ?

For exmaple :
- the initial reported issue was a duplicate of
"dictd should not require a UTF-8 locale on the server"
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=232227
and the reported fixed it on his side.

- Guaka problems looks like he have added the utf-8 locales via
"locales" but did not changed /etc/default/dictd to match one
of those ...

- Ahmed El-Mahmoudy have a segfault which looks like there is a
real bug in dictd (not only a configuration issue)
Maybe it is even remotely exploitable :(

- Mario Lang looks like having a permission issue with the
logfile that you told was "pending" fixed by adding a warning
message .

Yes, I sent a patch to the Security Team a few days ago, but didn't get
a reply. As the security infrastructure is non-functional at the
moment, I have no hope of seeing this resolved soon (given how my
previous request to update tcpdump in woody had been ignored).

Hi Hans-Joachim,

how did you get the number? I extracted the (d)igikam,
digikamimage(p)lugins and (k)ipi-plugins debs and get ~ 25 MB.

$ du -sk */usr/share/doc

all is ~ 42 MB

I'm not sure if digikam* and digikam*-doc (from a non-english
installation viewpoint). I'll check next release, it will include
new doc translations. when code/doc ratio drops below 1/3 it
definitely time for a split.

What's needed to solve the problem is infrastructure in debian
pkg mgmt that automaticly installs/picks only those language(s)
one is interested in without splitting in one additional pkg
per language. Otherwise debian suddenly has more than 100,000
pkgs.

Provided there will be a fix for 4.0.x, is there any chance that this kind

Bug#314605: The --bind feature of mount is insufficiently documented

2005-06-17 Thread Thomas Fischbacher

Package: mount
Version: 2.12p-4
Severity: wishlist

Problem description:

The 2.4 Linux kernel provides features that can be used by mount to
mount a mounted filesystem to an additional mount point. There are two
different ways how to do this: either with --bind, or with --rbind. The
documentation says that --bind will just bind the mounted volume,
excluding sub-mounts, while --rbind will include sub-mounts.

This, however, does not specify how the system behaves if one mounts
additional volumes below the new mount point. Will they also become
available under the old mount point as well? In fact, they do not, and
this is highly useful behaviour which one would sometimes want to rely on.
But as this is not documented semantics, one cannot.

Imagine the following scenario:

There are various situations where one wants to provide an image of
"mostly the presently running installation" (i.e. /, /usr, /var, etc.) -
or a LVM snapshot of it. Examples: ad-hoc creation of a CD-bootable
system, NFS-export of a bootable system, etc.

One pretty elegant solution is to just use mount --bind to create the
desired structure under a new mount point from the available volumes, and
then perform some extra modifications e.g. by loopback-monting image files
into the --bind-mounted directory tree.

This should not only work, but one should also have guarantees (i.e. a
documented promise) that it does work.

Might be. What version do you have? I think we have the same version

Might well be a libgnome-keyring problem, though. Do you have the
gnome-keyring daemon running?

$ ps aux | grep keyring

If not, would you mind trying to run it manually and trying to reproduce

Package: dict-devil
Version: 1.0-8
Severity: normal

Hi,

The Debian package entry for "lord" reads:

... "Sir," as, Sir 'Arry Donkiboi, or 'Amstead 'Eath.

I currently have a hard copy of "The enlarged Devil's Dictionary"
(c) 1967 E.J. Hopkins, published by Victor Gollancz Ltd. 1967, and
printed by Lowe & Brydone Ltd.

Which agrees with my general sense that it should instead read:

... "Sir," as, Sir 'Arry Donkiboi, of 'Amstead 'Eath.

Thanks for maintaining this package, and please do keep an eye out
for the other 850+ definitions should they become available to us. :-)

I have test this solution :

- add a user lists-archives with home directory in
/var/lib/lists-archives and password disabled
- add user lists-archives in the group "list"
- in /etc/alias delete this line :
  lists-archives: "|/usr/bin/procmail /etc/lists-archives/procmailrc"
- in /var/lib/lists-archives add a symlink to the procmailrc file :
  ln -s /etc/lists-archives/procmailrc .procmailrc
- change owner of unfilteredmbox to lists-archives

for me, it's work fine.

Bug#314609: libkrb53: allow whitespace before comments in /etc/krb5.conf

2005-06-17 Thread Jeremie Koenig
Package: libkrb53
Version: 1.3.6-2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hello,

I've been hit by a bad surprise with ssh-krb5 using libkrb53 on an
otherwise heimdal installation. Heimdal does allow for leading
whitespace before the '#' sign introducing a comment in /etc/krb5.conf,
and MIT kerberos doesn't.

So I put some whitespace into my krb5.conf. Later I installed ssh-krb5,
which use MIT heimdal libraries and failed silently to authenticate via
gssapi because of this, and it took me time and effort to understand
what was going on. The fact that the particular debug message wasn't
working properly in ssh-krb5 didn't help.

So, I propose for comment leading whitespace to be allowed with MIT
Kerberos as well as Heimdal, and attach a patch which does this.
