Bug#337395: Patch from Ubuntu

2005-12-18 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Hi David,

The bug is here on Ubuntu Dapper & Breezy. I can't double check on
Debian, but chances are high it will be here too (there's not a big
difference between dapper and sid those days).

The Ubuntu bug for this is
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/libgtk-trayicon-ruby/+bug/5255

You can find a debdiff that fixes the problem on
http://librarian.launchpad.net/1208465/libgtk-trayicon-ruby_0.1.0-3%2Bdebianfix337395.debdiff

Thank you,

That would be absolutely fantastic! You can pull the current file from
svn:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-exim4/exim/trunk/debian/README.Debian.xml?op=file&rev=0&sc=0,
or svn co svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-exim4/exim/trunk. Please submit
the resulting patch through the BTS.

Greetings
Marc

Just a note for fellow DDs that are hit by the problem: A way to
temporarily fix it is to SSH to master and force resolution of your
domain's MXs; for example if your MXs are "foo.example.com" and
"bar.example.org" then do:

for qtype in A ; do for mx in foo.example.com bar.example.org; do
 dig -t "${qtype}" "${mx}"; done; done

(Hmm... Thinking now that doing the resolution is probably not
necessary.)

This fix will hold for as long as this information is in master's DNS
cache, thus for at most the TTL of your MX's A entries, maybe shorter
if master's bind decides to throw the information away from the cache
sooner.

Good luck!

Interesting. Are you also intending to package Alice

interested in packaging alice myself, provided I can
get rid of some of my other packages.

You have to purge the package to remove the init script (since it is a
configuration file). However, you are right that there should not be
errors on bootup, I'll fix that.

Bug#343653: system freezes randomly

2005-12-18 Thread Zu Kim
I found that I do not need the net-driver disk because the root (or the
boot) disk recognizes my network card. However, it still freezes at
various places. I tried it for more than 20 times but all failed.
Sometimes it freezes when loading the root disk, sometimes it freezes
when asking for the language/keyboard setup, sometimes it freezes when
asking for the hostname, sometimes it freezes when it is installing
files (libc6-udeb is one of the populler place).

When I use USB root instead of floppy root, loading libc6-udeb fails.

I first tried installing from Knoppix which didn't work, tried booting
from floppy and USB which didn't work either. I will finally try a CD
(net-install) and if it's the same, I will have to install fedora.. T_T

I downloaded the latest PPD, but it was byte-to-byte identical to the

Bug#343662: fsck errors halting boot after upgrade

2005-12-18 Thread Andrew Sackville-West

Theodore Ts'o wrote:

Are you using your system with hardware time set to some non-GMT local

you are, of course, correct. And its interesting in that I had set it to
UTC at some point and I remember having trouble with my timezones and so
forth (my clock in KDE kept getting munched) but the problem went away.
h...

I think you can make the problem go away by making /etc/localtime
contain a copy of what it is currently symlinked to in
/usr/share/zoneinfo/, and renaming
/etc/rcS.d/S22hwclockfirst.sh to /etc/rcS.d/S09hwclockfirst.sh. This
is obviously not the "proper" fix; since among other things if the
localtime file needs to get updated (for example if the US Congress
changes the definition of daylight savings time), we need a way to
make sure /etc/localtime gets updated when the package gets updated.

But I believe if you were to apply the above as a workaround, it
should address your problem. Fixing this in the more global sense
will require making changes in the overall Debian boot setup, and I'm
going to have to take this up on debain-devel and consult other Debian
developers.

Well, I'm all for doing things the "right" way and will fix my clock and
then unpin apt for e2fsprogs and move back up to 1.39. Thanks for your
attention to this matter, and I hope my info will help to continue
improvement of Debian for all ;)

Bug#343976: Acknowledgement (History file is saved with incorrect size)

2005-12-18 Thread David Murn
Upon digging a little further (I really shouldve done this before
submitting the first report), I have discovered what I think may be the
problem. When I logout, bash saves the complete history (upto HISTSIZE
lines) to the .bash_history file, however the problem occurs when bash
starts up. It sets up its environment, setting HISTSIZE to 500, then
reads in (at most) 500 lines from the .bash_history file. It then
processes the .bashrc and HISTSIZE is set to 5000, but by then the history
has already been truncated to the initial value of 500 lines.

There are a couple of solutions I can see to this..

1) Read in the .bash_history file upon startup, upto EOF. Once completed,
set HISTSIZE to the number of lines read from the file. This has a
problem that you are reading an unknown number of lines, so may need some
upper limit set.

2) Process the .bashrc file before reading in the .bash_history file, so
that if the user does wish to change these values, it is possible. This
would seem to be the easiest option, however I have not looked too
in-depth at how this could be accomplished.

Figure that might interest distros ...

 Forwarded Message
Subject: [PATCH] powerpc: g5 thermal overtemp bug

The g5 thermal control for liquid cooled machines has a small bug, when
the temperatures gets too high, it boosts all fans to the max, but
incorrectly sets the liquids pump to the min instead of the max speed,
thus causing the overtemp condition not to clear and the machine to shut
down after a while. This fixes it to set the pumps to max speed instead.
This problem might explain some of the reports of random shutdowns that
some g5 users have been reporting in the past.

Many thanks to Marcus Rothe for spending a lot of time trying various
patches & sending log logs before I found out that typo. Note that
overtemp handling is still not perfect and the machine might still
shutdown, that patch should reduce if not eliminate such occcurences in
"normal" conditions with high load. I'll implement a better handling
with proper slowing down of the CPUs later.

This is a bug in gcc, but while it is being debugged some more, the
toolchain actually suggested a workaround for you:

/usr/bin/ld: [...] cannot reach
0aae__ZSt10_ConstructIN5boost7archive6detail19basic_iarchive_impl7aobjectES4_EvPT_RKT0_+0,
recompile with -ffunction-sections

Try adding that flag (-ffunction-sections) to the gcc compile flags for
hppa.

The problem is that a branch instruction on hppa has limited range
(17-bits), so if the branch target is too large (this happens often with
large problems, especially c++ code with lots of templates), the
toolchain needs to add special stubs for far branches. gcc has logic to
figure this out, but sometimes its calculations do not match what
binutils calculates.

Bug#343978: vlc: segfault on launch/fopen

2005-12-18 Thread Michael
Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I have recently installed wxvlc/vlc_0.8.4.debian-1 via dpkg. It will not
launch on its own and it will not launch with a file specified.

In the past, when I was using vlc-0.8.1, it would only segfault with avi files
(as another user recently submitted a bugreport on and which 0.8.4 doesn't
fix). Now, both vlc and wxvlc have been rendered unusable.

Thanks
Michael

Bug#343976: History file is saved with incorrect size

2005-12-18 Thread David Murn

Package: bash
Version: 3.0-17

For quite a while now Ive noticed a bug in bash failing to save the
history file correctly. I often find that a history of 500 lines simply
isnt enough, so I have edited my .bashrc to set HISTSIZE and HISTFILESIZE
to 5000. However this does not appear to make any difference, as the
.bash_history file seems limited to 500 lines (actually, 505 lines at
~9k). Even checking that both environment variables are set to 5000.

Are there any instances in the bash source where these values are
hard-coded, or even referenced? This bug has been present for well over a
year, and finally annoyed me enough to report it.

I can help provide any further information necessary to help investigate
this issue, but it seems to be 100% reproducable on several machines I
have, running different versions of bash.

2005-12-18 Thread David Creelman
Hi,

Bug#343975: quodlibet: request for "title-case all tags" option on "Edit Tags" dialog

2005-12-18 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: quodlibet
Version: 0.15-3

a lot of songs that i have do not have artist, albums, and songs
properly capitalized. it would be nice to have a button that says
something like "Title-Case All Tags" under the "Edit Tags" dialog in
order to quickly apply proper capitalization. a similar option is
available under "Tag by Filename," but that requires the user to
properly set up a parser string. if their goal is just capitalization,
it would be a lot easier if there was a direct button.

Bug#343974: quodlibet: request for tab keypress to bypass dropdown arrow on "Add a Tag" dialog

2005-12-18 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: quodlibet
Version: 0.15-3
Severity: wishlist

hello,

i'm fixing a bunch of my mp3s and find myself adding in the artist and
album a lot. so, i am using the "Add a Tag" dialog a lot. the "Add a
Tag" is under "Song -> Properties -> Edit Tags -> Add."

ok, so i type album or artist in the top text entry, then i press tab,
and the dropdown arrow becomes highlighted, so i press tab again to get
to the text entry to enter the name. so, there is an unneccessary extra
key press each time i do this. also, pressing the up or down arrow key
on either the top text entry or the drop down arrow do the same thing,
so there is no need for tab to stop on that widget.

thanks for you hard work on this nice program.

peace and happy holidays,
mike gilbert

The DNS setup changed in the meanwhile, because of, as I now know, a wrong
guess at the cause of the failure. The old setup had MX's from multiple
different zone's, and the one MX that had a long failure was also served
the DNS server of the mail server, but the secundary MX's to which the mail
should have been delivered to, was only remotely DNS-served -- so the DNS
server in question at times only had the broken MX cached (well, was
authoritive for it, even), and only that was in the additional section --
the IP addresses of the working MX's were out of the cache.

The only solution seems to me to actively query for all A (and )
records of all MX's before determining that no MX's are available for
delivery -- the additional DNS section is not to be trusted to ever give an
exhaustive list of IP addresses to try. I'd even say that it needs to
happen at every delivery attempt after delivery is found to be unsuccesful
to all the MX's in the additional section, because it can happen that some
MX's are more often in it than others. And you don't want delivery to fail
just because at the ultimate attempt all MX's happen to be down -- but some
were up in the past 4 days.

Note that RFC 974, MAIL ROUTING AND THE DOMAIN SYSTEM from 1986 (predating IPv6
by 12 years) explicitely warns against wrong handling of the DNS additional
section for MX queries:

| The incomplete data problem also requires some care when handling
| domain queries. If the answer section of a query is incomplete
| critical MX RRs may be left out. This may result in mail looping, or
| in a message being mistakenly labelled undeliverable. As a result,
| mailers may only accept responses from the domain system which have
| complete answer sections. Note that this entire problem can be
| avoided by only using virtual circuits for queries, but since this
| situation is likely to be very rare and datagrams are the preferred
| way to interact with the domain system, implementors should probably
| just ensure that their mailer will repeat a query with virtual
| circuits should the truncation bit ever be set.

Even though the RFC only mentions problems regarding to DNS datagram
truncation, and does not mention the issue that is more relevant here,
incomplete answer due to unbalanced caching -- a problem which only can
happen with MX's out of multiple zone's or with IPv6 (or explicitely
unbalanced TTL's in one zone, but I consider *that* very unlikely).

Bug#343973: gtetrinet: can easily disassociate the "connect, disconnect" tab

2005-12-18 Thread Justin Pryzby
Package: gtetrinet
Version: 0.7.9-1
Severity: minor

Starting gtetrinet from a bash shell, when the GUI comes up the widget
which initially has focus is the "disassociate" widget. So starting
by typing "gtetrinet enter enter" can cause it to become easily
disassociated.

Strangely, "enter" seems to be the only way to *re*associate it with
the main window.

Also, clicking (but not dragging) the disassociate button produces the
following:

(gtetrinet:2702): Bonobo-CRITICAL **: bonobo_dock_band_drag_end:
assertion `band->doing_drag' failed

I suggest the following behaviour:

 - Cause the initially focussed widget to be "connect", rather than
   "disassociate".

 - Cause the disassociate button to *re*associate when clicked when
the tab bar is not associated.

 - Fix whatever problem causes the warning to be emmitted.

Bug#335040: scim: add option to disable the "shift" hotkey

the feedback from traditional Chinese users is very important, please

I must confess I didn't do a good job by forwarding your report to
upstream, however apparently you are not the only one annoyed by this
issue, and the new scim-tables releases already have such an option to
disable the shift hotkey.

I just tested scim-tables 0.5.5-1 in unstable, and in scim-setup
program, in IMEngines -> Generic Table -> Keyboard tab, you can change
this hotkey in the "Mode Switch" entry. Would you please test it and
see if it is what you need?

Our mistake; though the fix is commented out (its non-security), we left
the Closes string in there, so it was automatically closed. I've
reopened all other such bugs.

Bug#342820: valgrind

I would suggest to investigate the multiple warnings valgrind emits.
Note that the first few related to glibc 2.3.5 may be ignored.

I've checked the network settings, and it would appear that the defaults for
centericq's aim connections are out of date, which should probably be opened as
a separate bug. the correct settings should be login.oscar.aol.com:5190.

Having changed this, I no longer get the error listed below, and in fact,
nothing is added to the centericq log to even indicate a connection.
In the status window within centericq I now get:

[aim] connecting to the server
[aim] password sent
[aim] disconnected

I have confirmed that the other clients are able to connect on the same network
address.

Well, using

cp -f /usr/share/libtool/libtool.m4 admin/libtool.m4.in
cp -f /usr/share/libtool/ltmain.sh admin/ltmain.sh
cp -f /usr/share/misc/config.guess admin/config.guess
cp -f /usr/share/misc/config.sub admin/config.sub
make -f admin/Makefile.common

causes the build to fail with many undefined references failures. It
seems that -lqt-mt is completely removed from the link flags. Not so
good for a KDE application :-/
Do you know if this is known bug of the Debian libtool?

Michael

Please send me a debug log with -d imap -1. (Note that this log may
contain passwords.) If your remote server is passing it along
incorrectly, OfflineIMAP may do so as well. AFAIK, OfflineIMAP does no
translation.

Bug#332646: acknowledged by developer (Closing bug)

2005-12-18 Thread Samuel Mimram

Erich Schubert wrote:
The solution to this problem is to use the alsadev option of the

It should be supported in the configuration dialogs, too.
I just verified that "alsadev=plug:dmix" works, but it should actually
be default here, given my .asoundrc - when I choose "alsa" in my gnome
multimedia settings dmix is being used. I agree that linphone should
have a separate setting here - you might want to use e.g. usb headphones
or a handsfree device for doing calls, not your regular sound card - but
it should behave similar to these settings.

Right, linphone should use the .asoundrc settings (upstream CCed).

Cheers,

Samuel.

Bug#330850: ambiguous interpretations of versions

2005-12-18 Thread Justin Pryzby
clone 330850 -1
retitle -1 dh-make: backslash allowed in package version
thanks

If I'm not mistaken, this bug is caused by ambiguity of `pwd` which
looks like

  foo-1-2

Is this package "foo-1" version "-2", or package "foo" version "1-2"?

I guess the solution is to warn the user on such ambiguity..

By the way, you're not presently enforcing "must start with an
alnumeric character", and you shouldn't bashslash-escape characters
with in range expression (see regex.7).

As written, '\' is allowed within the package version:
echo '/gnuplotfortran-0\\.2.2-1' |perl -ne
'/.*\/(.*)-([0-9][0-9a-zA-Z+\.\-]*)$/ && print $1 . "XX" . $2 . "\n";'

No, if it tells you the resolution explicitly then that's all we need,
espeically since it matches the ppd file.

NO, now that we know it should be 600, we wouldn't expect 300dpi to
work.

33% isn't "too" large - sounds like the difference between A4 paper and
US legal paper size. Are your paper size settings consistent? (the
print dialog box in mozilla can change them, though it may not record
the change between different invocations of mozilla).

Hmm, quite odd. Perhaps the fix was in the ppd file? I understood you
downloading a fresh version of it for the testing we did above. In that
case the new settings may not have come through until both CUPS and
mozilla got restarted.

Yes, the inner workings of Xprint are a Black Magic. Unfortunately our
Chief Sorceror has disappeared beyond the Ether fighting Dragons, and
the rest of us are left to muddle through as best we can.

When you say the PS file is wrong, do you mean it's grossly mis-scaled
when you view in gv? This is a known problem, I think it's already
reported.

You should have better luck with PDF though. Check the paper size and
send me a copy of an errant pdf file, if it's still broken, before
opening a new bug on it.

And I thought the last time this was discussed on -devel, we had no
clear consensus this was a sufficiently heinous act that the package
should not be part of the next stable release. Suboptimal? probably.
RC? I thought the consensus was no.

Argh! I surely introduced this bug while fixing CAN-2005-2475.
The version currently in stable (and also testing and unstable)
is supposed to contain a fix for CAN-2005-2475, backported from the
upcoming unzip-5.53. If the backporting is correct, it would mean
the prerelease of 5.53 is messed up. I'll contact the authors.

Thanks a lot for reporting this and sorry for the inconvenience.

This sounds to me like a feature, not a bug. If the rlimit is
unlimited a default is used; otherwise, it is used as the stack size
for new threads. This happens during program initialization, before
main is called.

If you need a different stack size than your non-infinite RLIM_STACK
setting, you can specify the stack size explicitly when you create the
thread.

Thank you for your bug report. I'll include the README in the
aqbanking-tool package in the next revision/release of the package.

Some day I would like to have a real manpage for aqhbci-tool, but this
needs to be written or converted first... :->
Any volunteers? ;-)

Steve,

are you using multidrop mode? If so, please test if the attached patch
fixes the bug. It is an untested backport from 6.3.1-rc1.

If you are not using multidrop mode, please provide your configuration
details (passwords masked!) and a stack backtrace.

It's likely because those versions were compiled with a gcc < 4.0. Can
you do java --version, I think that will tell you which compiler was
used.

Normally it doesn't come up, because normally the Debian package name
is the same as the upstream name. But for shared library packages,
this is not the case. Most shared library packages don't have data
files like this that they need at runtime, so that reduces still
further the number of cases.

Bug#343941: also use sysctl to stop irda discovery

2005-12-18 Thread Mikko Rapeli
Package: irda-utils
Version: 0.9.16-10

Hello,

On an old Fujitsu Lifebook running sarge irattach alone does not stop
discovery mode, so sysctl should be used too. Now the TV does not change
to random channels any more :)

It's too late for sarge but perhapt etch would find this patch of use.
Tested on my sarge laptop.

Bug#343942: openoffice.org: error because of missing XLB script on saving a document

2005-12-18 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 2.0.0-5
Severity: normal

When I edit a document (tested only with ODT) and hit the save button, I
get an error, saying "error while loading BASIC of the document
file://usr/lib/openoffice/share/basic/WebWizard/script.xlb

comon I/O-error"
(translated roughly from german, I hope it suffices).

a second error is also given, complainig about a mising file
"dialog.xlb" in the same dir.

Nevertheless, the file seems to be saved without problems.

Pls. let me know if you need more info to track this down, and I'd like
to thank you for all your work!

Bug#343940: ITP: gecode -- generic constraint development environment

2005-12-18 Thread Kari Pahula
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Kari Pahula <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: gecode
  Version : 1.0.0
Upstream Author : Christian Schulte <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and others
* URL : http://www.gecode.org/
* License : BSD
Description : generic constraint development environment

Gecode is an attempt to construct an open, free, portable, accessible,
and efficient environment for developing constraint-based systems and
applications.

Gecode is radically open for programming: it can be easily
interfaced to other systems. It supports the programming of new
propagators (as implementation of constraints), branching strategies,
and search engines. New variable domains can be programmed at the same
level of efficiency as finite domain and integer set variables that
come predefined with Gecode.

The GenericName should just be "Web Browser". I might make sense to
change the Name field to "Firefox Web Browser", since that's what the
HIG is actually suggesting.

I rechecked today: Manufacturer sends me to linuxprinting.org and I
get the same PPD I already have from linuxprinting.org .

It contains, among others:

 *DefaultResolution: 600dpi

That's the only occurrence of the string "resolution" in it.

It says 600 dpi, both for colour and for monochrome. (bits per pixel:
1 and 8)

Yes, it does: 600x600dpi.

Shall I send you a scan? Without a reference to compare to, I can't
decide.

It doesn't.

Yes, the xprint resolution setting doesn't seem to make any
difference.

No, always 2.

> same problem.

They seem to be mis-scaled by a factor of 1.33 approximately, as seen
by xpdf or gv. (33% too small.)

The PostScript, on the other hand, is mis-scaled in the other
direction: A factor of four, I'd say.

This is all independent of the debconf "default resolution" setting.

> You may have luck printing to PDF file (find them in ~/Xprintjobs)
> and sending the pdf file to your printer.

How do you expect me to send it to my printer? Convert it to
PostScript and send it to the Cups queue? The printer doesn't have an
FTP server, nor an HTTP/IPP server.

And now... the problem has mysteriously disappeared! I changed the
setting multiple times, each time printing from Galeon, and I always
got a quarter-page. I started testing with Mozilla, I was getting a
quarter-page, too, with different settings. I change the setting one
last time, restart Mozilla, and it works! Back to galeon... it works!
I don't understand a thing of how this is behaving. Veeery
strange. Well, thanks for your suggestions.

PDF and PS files are still wrong, though. Probably I should do a
separate bug report about these.

The text frontend is useful for automation, etc too, but the only real
reason it's been included on the netboot images is that for most arches
there is no particular space constraint there.

Both are in the netwinder nic-modules udeb. Along with some other stuff,
which I wonder why it's present. I've removed the nic-extra-modules
which had probably a megabyte or more of stuff, from the netwinder
initrd list, and also removed isa-pnp-modules from there. I think we
could save more space if we needed to by reducing the nic-modules to
just the two modules you listed.

Ok, removed that too.

Please try with the next daily build of the d-i arm images and see if
the changes I have made make the image small enough to boot. Or if the
builds continue to be down like they have been since Nov 22nd, I can build
an image on one of my arms for you to try.

On Sun, 18 Dec 2005, Joey Hess wrote:

Ok.

Do I understand correctly that text frontend is only useful when the
serial console is too slow to redraw the pseudographics for every screen
with default frontend? Netwinder's serial console is 115200 baud, so this
redrawing is actually very fast. I'd say that limits the usefullness of
the text frontend significantly.

- isa-pnp-modules -- does netwinder actually use this for any ethernet
  cards?
- nic-extra-modules -- if we check the included modules and make sure
that nic-modules has any nic drivers we would expect a netwinder to
  need

Netwinder has two built-in ethernet ports:

Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21142/43 (rev 41)
Ethernet controller: Winbond Electronics Corp W89C940F

First one needs the tulip driver, second is ne2k compatible, so it uses
ne2k-pci. Both are on the PCI bus. As it does not have any expansion
slots, those are the only two NIC drivers it will ever need, everything
else can go.

- usb-modules -- does a netwinder need this for USB keyboard?

There are no USB interfaces, so I think that everything USB-related can go
without harm.

- bogl-bterm-udeb -- can a netwinder have a console at all?
- console-keymaps-usb, console-keymaps-at -- can a netwinder have a
  keyboard at all?

Yes, it has a PS2 connectors for keyboard and mouse, and a video card, so
the monitor can be attached.

- as a last resort, we could reduce the size greatly by removing
  translations

Hopefully, this will not be necessary.
