Bug#372782: Wrong drivers? (CUPS v1.1 drivers with CUPS v1.2)
I had exactly the same symptoms: on upgrading to CUPS 1.2.1-3 (current version; don't know when bug appeared, as I don't print often), my printer (HP 1320nw) stopped working. Starring at the admin screen, I realized that it read something like: Make and Model: HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5 CUPS v1.1 ...and realized that the problem was that CUPS was using an -old- driver. I went through the Modify Printer dialog and changed the driver version, so it now reads: Make and Model: HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5 CUPS v1.2 ...and it immediately worked. I don't know if this caused everyone's problems, but it certainly caused mine -- the printer immediately worked. -nils -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#377808:
Hi, I'm one of the developer of uim. As far as I can tell, you can avoid this complete freeze of X by using --async option of uim-xim. I think this bug is caused from invalid use of filter key event in mozilla in the address bar widget. Even if you use uim-xim --async (or maybe SCIM's x11 module), CPU usage may increase to 100% while inputting some characters with completed addresses below address widget popup, but in this case mozilla won't freeze at all. By the way, you seem to like using XIM instead of gtk+ immodule because of the compose sequences in X11. I think you can try uim's gtk+ immodule with latin IM (selecting Latin characters from toolbar) enabled. It support most of the sequence in X's compose sequence using Compose key (bug dead key is not supported yet). You can modify this table if you like. Please check the table in /usr/share/uim/latin.scm. Cheers, -- Etsushi Kato [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? That would be one option, I'll look into implementing this. What I'm wondering though is why libebl is available static-only in the first place. Do you have any idea? I have no idea. Bug#377278: kde-style-polyester: kde-style and kwin-style shipped together
severity 377278 wishlist thanks mate I wanted to check out kde-style-polyester and found that it depended on kwin. Turns out that the kwin theme is also shipped with this package. kwin themes are usually packaged separately as kwin-style-* to keep the kwin dependency separate Currently, packages called kde-style-foo contains a widget style and it can contain a window decoration as well, if the source package comes with both. (Like polyester does) kwin-styles are only packaged seperately if they come in a separate source package. (Like powder) kwin-styles and kde-styles both can contain colorschemes. I do not currently plan to change this in the polyester package. I am flagging the severity as normal and not wishlist because this seems to be a deviation from the usual packaging practice. It is not a deviation, so downgrading. /Sune pgplrvVeWsu1a.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#378199: gksu should conflict with libgksu0
Package: gksu Version: 1.9.1-2 Severity: normal Apparently, the dependencies for gksu_1.9.1-2 aren't quite correct. It replaces, but doesn't conflict with libgksu0. Thus, libgksu0 is not removed from the system. When trying to update libgksu2-0, I got an error because it tried to overwrite a file that also was installed by libgksu0. Manually removing libgksu0 fixed this problem. Bug#378205: Please use IFNAME in favour of $1 for the interface in use
Package: ddclient Version: 3.6.7-2 Severity: wishlist Hi, ddclient used IPLOCAL in favour of $4 already in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ddclient. I can't find any instance of shift in the source which is followed by an argument at all. There are some where it is followed by a comment (so it reads shift # remove things). Is that not allowed? Any pointers of where to fix this (or ways to reproduce it) would be welcome. Bug#377942: Removal of electric
retitle 377942 RM: electric -- RoQA; unmaintained; semi-obsolete close 377942 thanks Re: Kai Hendry 2006-07-14 [EMAIL PROTECTED] My hope is that Java electric does get eventually get packaged though its current buggy C version in Debian should be removed. Popcon reports 100 users, and the package has 0 RC/important bugs. Imho it should only be removed once the Java-Version is in the archive. I've already opened a bug for its removal. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=377942 I've removed the RC bit (and the low-usage) from the title since it's not true, and closed it. I'm inexperienced when it comes to these matters. If you think it is a good idea to give this upstream unmaintained code in, then fine. I'm all for removing crap, but if a simple B-D bump resolves the issue... If anyone still wants electric to go, please reopen #377942, I won't object. I've quickly prepared an NMU: http://hendry.iki.fi/debian/unstable/electric_6.05-2.2_i386.changes Uploaded as 6.05-3. We can't help you if the readings you get from the net are wrong I'm afraid but... Note: after I typed the above, the Fahrenheit display switched to the correct one, 64 degrees right now. While I was writing the above my modem's PPP connection was kept very busy by file transfers and background jobs. I'm guessing that X4WP must have been waiting for some network event before it could display things correctly. Not as bad, but still a bug, as it needs no network to convert a temperature. I'll try to test this later when I'm offline. Do you mean you weren't dialled up to start with? It'll only be able to get a reading when you have a net connection. Simon. -- [ Clear? - Holly. Bug#372564: When KDE wait for kwalletmanager
I have the same problem. I can sometimes logout (not shutdown) from KDE without problems. If I try to shutdown, kwalletmanager crashs. If he not crashs, he wait (ps aux says as last process: sleep 5). So: this waiting can make it possible, that system goes down, but X (kdm) is still active. The message will now halt shutdown /dev/hda ist usual 1 second before power off - by me there is no power off. I see no kwallet icon (only in status bar of konqueror in webbroser mode). If I click there I see only gray window (no wallets, no white container). And this window crashs. If I open kwalletmanager after this, I see the wallets in kwalletmanager window and the icon i the try... Bug#378210: Miscompiles on amd64 with rpath /usr/lib64
Package: libarpack++2 Version: 2.2-3 Severity: serious Hi, I noticed that libarpack2 on amd64 misses most of its depends entries because it uses the wrong path for libraries: ql-dev:/scratch/build/sarge-biarch/arpack++/arpack++-2.2# ldd debian/libarpack++2/usr/lib/libarpack++.so.2 libarpack.so.2 = /usr/lib64/libarpack.so.2 (0x2abb) liblapack.so.3 = /usr/lib64/liblapack.so.3 (0x2acfa000) libblas.so.2 = /usr/lib64/libblas.so.2 (0x2b4a3000) libg2c.so.0 = /usr/lib64/libg2c.so.0 (0x2b60d000) libstdc++.so.5 = /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.5 (0x2b72f000) libm.so.6 = /lib/libm.so.6 (0x2b911000) libc.so.6 = /lib/libc.so.6 (0x2ba98000) libgcc_s.so.1 = /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x2bcd7000) libblas.so.3 = /usr/lib64/libblas.so.3 (0x2bde4000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 = /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x4000) This confuse dpkg in sarge since it does not canonify links like etch/sid does. dh_shlibdeps -L libarpack++ -l debian/libarpack++2/usr/lib dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: could not find any packages for /usr/lib64/libarpack.so.2 (libarpack.so.2) dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: unable to find dependency information for shared library libarpack (soname 2, path /usr/lib64/libarpack.so.2, dependency field Depends) dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: could not find any packages for /usr/lib64/liblapack.so.3 (liblapack.so.3) ... It would be nice if this could be fixed in sarge R3 or amd64.debian.net's stinkypete. This bug is also present in sid (the -L /usr/lib/../lib64 and similar entries when linking) but dpkg works around that so it has no serious consequence [i.e. it is only serious in sarge]. Bug#377389: HOWTO for naive users
Oh for heaven's sake, I can promise I'm way busier than you!!! (Until you're a professor you have no concept of what busy means.) But does that stop me? No. --Barak. HOWTO HIBERNATE Cookbook Hibernation Instructions or I Don't Care, I Just Want It To Work! To get the hibernate command to work on a stock Debian machine requires a very small amount of setup. This file attempts to walk you through the process. We assume you are running a stock Debian kernel, and that hibernate will be defaulting to the swsusp method. (In the future it is hoped that even this small amount of configuration will be automated.) WHAT YOU NEED TO DO INSTALL AND REMOVE PACKAGES The following packages must be installed/removed: install: hibernate (version = 1.91) install: initramfs-tools initrd-tools remove: yaird install: udev (reasonably recent, eg version = 0.093) install: linux-image-XXX-YYY (with XXX = 2.6.8) IDENTIFY SWAP PARTITION When awakening from hibernation, the kernel needs to know the location of the swap partition, which is where the state of the suspended system is stored. You can figure out your swap partition using the command egrep swap /etc/fstab or swapon -s If what you see is of the form /dev/ide/hostX/busX/targetX/lunX/partX you need to translate to the form /dev/hdXX or /dev/sdXX as appropriate, which can be done by looking for the symbolic link in /dev/. Here is a code fragment that shows what this looks like. $ ls -l /dev | egrep `swapon -s | tail -1 | cut -f1 -d' ' | sed 's-^/dev/--'` lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Jul 9 10:21 hda3 - ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3 CONFIGURE INITRAMFS-TOOLS OPTION The swap partition needs to be listed in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume . (If you have an old version of initramfs-tools, the file is /etc/mkinitramfs/conf.d/resume .) It should look like this, where /dev/hdXX is your swap partition: $ cat /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume RESUME=/dev/hdXX If the file is already there but has /dev/ide/hostX/busX/... you need to convert it to the proper form, as above. REBUILD /boot/initrd.imag Rebuild the initrd.img boot ram filesystem images by invoking update-initramfs -u REBOOT You should now reboot into your shiny hibernation-capable system. TEST THAT HIBERNATION WORKS At this point, you should be able to run hibernate and it should do some crunching and then halt. When you reboot, the system should instead magically awaken from its hibernation. WARNINGS Don't suspend your system, then somehow boot using some other mechanism like a CDROM and play with the filesystems, then try to unsuspend the system. This would lead to corruption of your data. INFORMATION YOU PROBABLY WILL NOT NEED * Booting without resuming If you hibernate but then need to do a normal cold boot, ie not an unsuspend, you can pass the option resume= to the kernel from the boot loader. (This is good to do if you modified the filesystem using some external mechanism, like booting off a rescue disk.) * IDE vs SCSI Instead of /dev/hdXX, your swap partition might be of the form /dev/sdXX. That is okay. * USING BOOT LOADER TO PASS OPTION RESUME= Instead of using initrd, you can pass the resume=/dev/hdXX option directly to the linux kernel, where /dev/hdXX is your swap partition. This can be done manually, when the system is booting, or by reconfiguring your boot loader to do it. The resume= option is harmless if the machine is not suspended, so you can modify the boot loader to always pass the option. How to do this depends on which boot loader you use: LILO or GRUB. ** LILO If you run lilo, add the line append=resume=/dev/hdXX at the top of the file /etc/lilo.conf and run the command lilo ** GRUB If you run grub, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to include the line # defoptions=resume=/dev/hda1 immediately following the line ## e.g. defoptions=vga=791 resume=/dev/hda5 and run the command update-grub CORRUPTION Some old disk drives fail to write some information sent to them immediately before the system powers down. If you have one of these, you should set some option somewhere in /etc/hibernate/. TROUBLESHOOTING: HARDWARE ISSUES AFTER AWAKENING Some kernel modules need to be unloaded prior to hibernation. Bug#378183: apt: All SHA256 hashes generated/used by APT are wrong
Jakob Bohm [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: To work around the breaks whole system issue, the following transition plan is proposed: 1. Before uploading the fixed apt, temporarily reconfigure darcs etc. to NOT include SHA256 values in Packages files at all (apt-ftparchive has an option to do that). 2. Upload the fixed apt as a minimal change from the apt version in testing, and coordinate with ftpadmin to push it quickly through to testing. Yes, this means holding back other bug fixes until the change has propagated. 3. Allow 1-3 weeks for users to upgrade to the fixed apt. Use the various announce mailing lists to alert users to the urgency of getting rid of apt versions 0.6.44 to 0.6.44.? inclusive before the grace period ends! 4. Turn SHA256 back on in darcs etc. this makes the SHA256 security available for real. But it also means that the archive can no longer be used by the broken 0.6.44 versions of apt. So leave behind (on the ftp server, www server etc.) a message explaining how users can manually upgrade to a new apt version by downloading a .tar file and a detached .gpg signature from ftp.debian.org/debian/tools/something . (This would be a hand-built tar file containing replacement .so files for each of the bad 0.6.44 apt versions and platforms). For the security breakage, patching apt is the obvious fix. One could rename the SHA256 field to SHA256v2 (or something) instead alowing for both new and old apt to work with both new and old Packages files. Breaking the format even with a 4 week grace period will result in users having broken systems. We had such a transition for the debian-amd64 project (with libc6/base-files depends) and even 6 month after the transition period user still appeared on the ML unable to upgrade from before the transition to current. There will always be stragglers. MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#254113: Fix for Openoffice?
tags 254113 pending thanks Quoting Jan Willem Stumpel ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Openoffice is originally a Windows application which has somehow been ported to Linux. So it probably uses the Windows method of determining line spacing (see Fontforge FAQ, How do I set the line spacing on a font?). This means using the OS2WinAscent and OS2WinDescent values. In Times New Roman and Arial I found that (in the .sfd version of the fonts): OS2WinAscent value = HheadAscent value; OS2WinDescent value = negative of HheadDescent value. You're absolutely right. I patched all sfd files, rebuilt the package and the vertical spacing problem is definitely over. I'll send the patch to upstream. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I don't think it is worth the hassle, I'm going to file the request for removal of exim 3 from sid and etch shortly after the release of sarge r3. etch will _not_ release with exim 3. Bug#378220: foomatic-filters: Improvement of the debconf templates
Package: foomatic-filters Version: 3.0.2-20060712-1 Severity: minor Tags: patch Hi, In your debconf templates, there is twice a Choices field with only one translatable choice and twice an empty Default field marked as translatable. Bug#360245: hula: Please package newer versions
On Fri, 2006-07-14 at 12:00 +0100, Anthony Callegaro wrote: Jerome you will be happy to know that according to the Hula-project mailing lists, and Tyler Peterson [1] posts on planet hula (2] the work on the store branch is stabilising. Yeah, I'm actually playing with the store branch right now. It's not going to be on head for a little while, though. Having Hula in etch would be awesome but seems a bit compromised if they don't release a quite stable version before etch freeze. Don't misunderstand me Alex, I'm not pushing you to release a new version :o) this was just an informative email ;o) I'm still trying to think this over. Originally, Hula looked like it was reasonably stable and getting more so. Then, of course, a few weeks later the whole project changed. At the moment, etch is scheduled to freeze in October though afaik. Frankly, I'm thinking Hula doesn't have a chance of making that - I don't think Hula can go into etch :( etch will almost certainly, IMO, release after Hula, but I don't think Hula will be good enough to get in before the freeze. I would be interested in people's views before I take action on this, but my current intention would be to file an RC bug against it so it doesn't get into etch. My opinion might change after 20th July's bug-fixing day, but I doubt it :/ Thanks, Alex. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#367867: initscripts: need versioned dep on powermgmt-base for on_ac_power
tags 367867 + pending thanks on_ac_power is in /usr/bin, where it is useless for the initscripts. We need access to it early in the boot sequence. Actually, the calls to on_ac_power in checkfs.sh and checkroot.sh were written explicitly to work as before when on_ac_power are unavailable, and only skip fsck if the binary is found and report that the laptop is on battery, to handle gracefully all installations where /usr/ is unavailable. If powermgmt-base is changed to move the binary to /bin/ or /sbin/, that is fine with me, but I do not believe any versioned dependency is needed for initscripts as it will work just fine both with and without and old and new powermgmt-base package. I've updated the comment in the init.d scripts to try to make this more clear, and will close this bug with the next upload when these comments make it into the archive. This patch has not been merged upstream, its been around long enough for that (i suspect its not mergable) 3. Diverging from upstream like this is _never_ a good thing in the long term that is true 5. I don't want to spoil my debugging attempts with other developers of madwifi (or wpa_supplicant) while this subtle hack is included well but no one hinders you from building a local package w/o the patch. The patch is still contained in the source package, but inactive via debian/patches/00list. Comments on how to best proceed welcome. as w/o the patch wpasupplicant is rendered useless for orinoco users, you should prove that patch is faulty. however I would suggest you to publicly ask on the lists why this patch is not included (reasons...) and based on this decide to drop/keep it/come up with a newer patch.
