Bug#398343: gallery: comments for pictures work even when disabled in config

2006-12-27 Thread Erik Steffl
Even after setting $gallery->app->comments_anonymous = "no" it is still
possible to post comments, there are no links but direct post still
works, here's what I see in apache logs (I guess that's how the comments
are added):

72.232.93.197 - - [27/Dec/2006:16:53:07 -0800] "POST
/gallery/tiger/P1060004?full=0 HTTP/1.1" 200 180655
"http://zasran.com/gallery/tiger/P1060004?full=0"; "Mozilla/4.0
(compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"

I see the comments on the site:

http://zasran.com/gallery/tiger/P1060004

It looks like it's impossible to stop spammers from spamming the gallery...

I'll try the gallery forums too, thanks for the tip. Any ideas when
you'll be updating gallery? I still see 1.5.4-2 in unstable.

This is a wishlist bug. I'll trawl bugzilla later to see if it's a good
idea to enale this plugin.

Bug#404487: Please improve the ssh regex

2006-12-27 Thread Amaya
Hi there!

Yaroslav Halchenko wrote:
> Have you tried fail2ban solution I've sent? does it work? what
> maxretry is a reasonable one?

I copied this section into my /etc/fail2ban/jail.conf:

[ssh-ddos]

enabled = true
port= ssh
filter  = sshd-ddos
logpath  = /var/log/auth.log
maxretry = 6

Then I copied the attached sshd-ddos.conf to /etc/fail2ban/filter.d/ and
restarted fail2ban.

I am still looking at what is happening, so that this gets tested before
you and upstream have some beer ;)

Just for the sake of detail, my ssh server listens on two ports: 22 and
443 (don't ask, you really don't want to know), so this could either
trigger false positives or miss some "attacks", but this is my local
problem, and I have read your doc about multi-port module support in
iptables, so I understand this problem is not easy to solve, and none of
your bussiness really.

But, I can easily do some iptables magic in my main fw for ssh to only
listen on port 22, so that this test becomes more accurate.

Would it be helpful if I did that? I would be very glad to.

Cheers!

Why is this release-critical? Surely it would be better to release with a
version of davfs2 that works with coda (which is what's documented in the
package description), rather than not shipping it at all?

Bug#303839: xscreensaver locks intel686 ibm laptop

2006-12-27 Thread dave stewart
I'm making this report here because what I am
experiencing appears to be identical to the previously
filed bug #303839, but I also note before I start that
dpkg claims that I no longer have xscreensaver-gnome
installed:

$ dpkg -s xscreensaver-gnome
Package: xscreensaver-gnome
Status: purge ok not-installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11

That said:

Package: xscreensaver
Version: 4.24-5
Kernel: 2.6.18-3-686
Libc:2.3.6.ds1-8

Bug was first experienced following dist-upgrade from
sarge to etch. xscreensaver generally works, except
the first time I try to use my machine after sleeping
the whole machine is locked. This leads me to suspect
that the problem lies with the power saving features
in xscreensaver. I have tried disabling power
management using the gnome panel applet (and confirmed
that the changes are reflected in ~/.xscreensaver),
but this has made no difference.

Graphics chipset is VGA compatible controller: ATI
Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon
Mobility 7500]

X Driver is the xorg ati driver in etch:

$ dpkg -s xserver-xorg-video-ati | grep ^[PV][ae][cr]
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.6.3-2

There does not appear to be anything helpful logged
anywhere.

I am replying to the bug, as I don't agree that this is "noise".

The BTS is a good tool to keep track of all the info, and lirc is group
maintained, so this way the whole group gets your email, not just me :)

This way, your chances of getting the issues fixed sooner increase, and
we can help you better.

Sorry, I never thought this tag would scare anyone. It's just for me to
know at a glance which bugs are answered to and which bugs are "just
there forever" without any further input. In this case, the "Waiting for
submitter" tag goes away, a confirmed tag should be added, as both of
you, reporters of what I believe is the same bug, are both responsive
and still experiencing this bug.

You can see what Popularity Contest (popcon for short) has to say about
it here: http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?popcon=lirc (in short, lirc
and friends are installed 12.757 times). Scary ;)

Thank you, we also appreciate your work as in:
- testing lirc
- doing what we documented you should do, then failing to get a working
  module
- resisting the frustration and the urge to send us the black helipcopters
- submitting helful bug reports instead, dealing with overworked
  maintainers, and
- being extremely patient waiting for fixes ;)

Thanks, for bearing with us!

Take it easy! I merged both bugs, so when Gerhard wanted to close his
bug, he did not notice that it was then a duble bug, and closed both.

I reponend them, and I think we can treat both as the same bug (that's
why I merged: summary, either use m-a or it doesn't work).

I reponened the bugs and all is fine now.

We are working on this issue, thanks for your patience.

Bug#357445: [geomview-users] dot-files in /usr/lib/geomview trigger root-kit warnings

2006-12-27 Thread Steve M. Robbins

I have made these changes, and two additional ones, so that no
dot-files are installed.

The additional changes are:

  (1) data/.geomview renamed to data/geomview This file is installed
into ${datadir} and read at startup, so geomview.sh also changes.

  (2) data/NDview/scripts/.ndview renamed to
data/NDview/scripts/ndview This file is also installed under
${datadir}, and read by src/bin/NDview/NDview, which is therefore
  also changed.

Lots of documentation files also updated.

I'm attaching the patch for comments. I'd like to commit this in the
coming days, unless there are strong objections.

Cheers,
-Steve

Bug#404749: closed by Filipus Klutiero <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Invalid)

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis
This report is invalid. As you state yourself, "Actually, you can
compile them but you can't load them because of the kernel

version difference."

That does not invalidate the report. The two packages do not work
together properly, though there may be people who need to use them
together. gcc should still probably be
flagged as incompatible with that kernel, though maybe dpkg/apt needs a
soft conflict tag - report a warning but don't prevent the install.

The issue could probably still be addressed to some degree with
the "Recommends:" tag.

Soft-conflict: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686, "Loadable Kernel Modules must be
compiled with same gcc version as kernel"

I strongly suggest you to reinstall a Debian release which is
appropriate for your level of Debian knowledge, that is stable or testing.

Don't be an ass. I have over a decade of linux experience (and SunOS,
Solaris, Ultrix, AIX, etc. before that) and am the co-author of a linux
programming book. Most of my experience is with (or even predates) RPM
based systems but I do have several debian boxes. If the incompatibility
was not obvious to me, it is a debian packaging defect not a personal one.
But if it causes problems for me, it will cause even greater problems for
less experienced people so I generously used my valuable time to report
the bug so other people wouldn't have the same problem. I was able to
install gcc-4.0 to fix the immediate problem and will probably do a kernel
upgrade to 2.6.18-3 in the future.

And I don't see how "testing" would be an appropriate recommendation for
someone you think is inexperienced. And the recommendation to

switch distributions in either direction because of your flawed perception
is non-sense.

In fact, the reason I upgraded to unstable in the first place is that
stable is essentially unusable these days. It is just too damn old, what
with debian developers wasting time over license fanaticism instead of
making a working distribution when a new "stable" was already long
overdue. I already had to upgrade much of the system to
"unstable" and APT was having hissy fits of wanting to upgrade huge
numbers of packages, remove large numbers of packages, or even "you can't
get there from here" when I tried to install various packages. KDE,
gnome, new kernels, x.org, udev, just too much in need of

replacement. "stable" has essentially become unmaintainable on desktop systems
(might be ok on some servers with no peripherals and no GUI programs).

I never would have installed stable in the first place if unstable
snapshots were availible on DVD.

An example of a more appropriate response would have been:
"Yes, that is a problem but one which the current packaging
system fails to provide tools to address. Some developers
need to be able to install multiple versions of gcc to compile
programs for other systems and if I put in a "Conflicts:" tag,
it would interfere with that and using "--force" might be
dangerous (more so in apt-get than dpkg). I am, therefore, filing a
bug report on dpkg suggesting that a new tag be added to debian
   package files for soft conflicts"
But "Recommends: " might have helped, though I don't know if dist-upgrade
would have printed a message based on that.

Oh, I did file the bug on dpkg so there is no longer any need for you to
do so. That was roughly the 43rd bug report I filed today.
(some were on upstream packages).

Bug#404778: dpkg: Need new packaging tags

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.13.24
Severity: normal

This is a debian policy bug report. I am filing against dpkg since it
is the package that most directly implements that policy.

I think the debian packaging system needs to be able to record certain
types of conflicts that should not prevent installing conflicting packages
but would warn the user before installing.

For example, dist-upgrade from stable to unstable left me with a system
that had linux-image-2.6.16-1-686 and gcc-4.1, a combination that prevents
the user from compiling and installing kernel modules (which was immediately
necessary).

gcc-4.1 should have been tagged with:
   Soft-conflict: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686, "Loadable Kernel Modules \
must be compiled with same gcc version as kernel"
Except that tag doesn't exist yet.
Developers may need to install multiple versions of GCC so you don't
necessarily want a hard conflict.

And linux-image-2.6.18-3-686 should have been tagged with something like
Soft-replaces: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686, "newer kernel is availible"
Except that tag doesn't exist yet.

Soft-replace:
   - Would not require the removal of older package
   - would suggest upgrade whenever you tried to install older package in
apt-get, aptitude, etc. either directly or as a result of another
action (installing a different package, upgrade, dist-upgrade, etc.)

Adding a message to "Recommends: ", "Suggests: ", etc. as I have done
with these new tags would also be helpful. Tell users WHY you recommend
them.
Recommends: libjpeg, "for optional jpeg import/export"
Of course, the exact syntax would need to be chosen to be compatible
with existing parsing.

Um, that doesn't say much, because firefox isn't shipping with etch --
iceweasel is.

Bug#404593: perl: incorrect line reading at block boundary (probable race condition)

I've said that the line was read by . The file is opened with

  open FILE, $_

where $_ contains the filename. The file is read with calls to

sub readlin
  { $_ = ; substr($_, -1) eq "\n" }

Well, really nothing special.

Since the bug report, I've also got a few errors on the same machine:

zsh: corrupt history file /home/vlefevre/.zhistory

and indeed the file was corrupted, e.g.:

: 116:1167158516;locale

instead of:

: 1167158516:0;locale

I don't know if this is related, but there seems to be a problem
with NFS (the other machines on the network don't have any problem,
but are not under Debian/etch).

Bug#404611: Could easily be fixed in mozilla-imagezoom

2006-12-27 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
reassign 404611 mozilla-imagezoom
thanks

Thanks Jan
(Now I CC to icedove maintainer)

I am adjusting imagezoom: actually I didn't have to make those
per-application preferences links anyways for iceweasel and icedove -
they are doing fine with per-extension preferences... iceape/mozilla
though needs them installed in application preferences directory.
That upload will close the bug, but also I want to ask few questions:

* Is there a plan to have similar move of arch indep files under share
and symlinking for *icedove*? (which is an apple from the same
tree as iceweasel, so they better be consistent, and since even iceape
  did similar move already)

* I can't find in iceweasel/changelog.Debian.gz when transition to
share from lib has happened. Thus I can't estimate when it happened.
Since it has happened recently, I guess, I would say IMHO it
wasn't a good decision to make standing in the doorway of the fresh
  release

* Are there plans to have proper "hardcoded" shift into using
/usr/share/ for arch-indep parts, ie would iceweasel code be modified
  and links removed some time?

* components/ directory has mixed set (arch indep and arch dep) files --
will it be ever split into 2

* It would be great if someone organize a page on wiki.debian
summarizing how ice* products are organized within file hierarchy.
That would help other maintainers (mostly maintainers of
extensions I guess) to provide proper placing of their files

In addition to my previous fixes for anti-aliased lines (bug #364024),
this corrects a segfault when you try and draw a short line outside

Attached is a test case and a patch that corrects the problem.

Bug#404611: the problem is

2006-12-27 Thread Peter Green
that iceweasel replaces that directory with a symlink but it can't do that
if another package already has files in it. What i think needs to happen
is that any plugins need to be modified to only put the files in the
iceweasel directory and then i belive the iceweasel package needs to be
made to conflict with the old versions of those packages but i'm not an
expert on this.

Me thinks it is still RC, as it makes monotone completely
unusable. Even if it is PowerPC specific, Debian is still supported on
all architectures, not just Intel.

Also, I may have forgotten to mention this bug prevents other
operations from working too, such as commit.

I am not sure what I can do to debug this, but FYI:

Bug#404724: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686: can't compile kernel modules, incompatible with gcc 4.1

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis

2.6.16-12 is not in unstable but 2.6.18-3, which is compiled with gcc
4.1. I suggest you upgrade to that version.

Thanks for the quick response.

Unfortunately, apt-get dist-upgrade doesn't know that 2.6.18-3 replaces
2.6.16-1. Since I managed to get things working by reverting to gcc 4.0
and upgrading to the newest nvidia driver (see Bug #282183), I might stay
at 2.6.16 for the time being.

Bug#404758: libavcodec.pc version gratuitously broken due to "0d." prefix

The version number there is the same version that goes in the library's
SONAME, which is arguably an upstream bug. (SONAME versions represent
ABIs but pkg-config is all about source compatibility.)

I believe the prefix was added to the SONAME because our libavcodec may
not be binary-compatible with another distributions's version, depending
on configuration options. In addition it may be that upstream bumps the
major number too often. (However, I'm fairly sure the major number
*does* need to be changed from time to time, so I'm not sure the prefix
should still be "0d.".)

Bug#404771: sane: scanner permission problems

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis
Package: sane
Version: 1.0.14-1
Severity: normal

I just did a dist-upgrade from stable to unstable in the last 24 hours.
Xsane says not to run as root or to report problems encountered as root.

But Xsane only recognizes the scanner if I am root.

This is true even if I unplug the scanner and reconnect. On the
sane-devel list on 2004-02-39 there was discussion of similar problems
that had to do with the order in which usbfs and hotplug (now udev)
were started and replugging the scanner worked then.

xscanimage works as root but not ordinary user.

kooka works as root but not ordinary user.

Note that both xscanimage and kooka also report errors when Xsane is running
because the device is in use and fail to alert the user to the device being
busy rather than unavailible.

Scanner is mustek 1200ub

OK, I suppose they don't have enough additional swap either.

I tested the footprint on i386, and I don't think it was nearly that
large with -O2. I assume gcc on amd64 uses a lot more RAM.

In any case, I probably won't be able to deal with this for a week or
two, so if you (or anyone else) would like to NMU (to use -O0 on
amd64), please do.

I was really hoping to get 0.11 into etch, but I'm not sure that's
possible anymore. It took longer than I thought it would to get the
change in the architecture list accepted.

Thanks for the help.

Bug#404772: Please enhance run-parts to visually distinguish jobs in email

2006-12-27 Thread Kenneth Pronovici
Package: cron
Version: 3.0pl1-86
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

It's sometimes difficult to distinguish between output from the
different jobs run as part of cron.daily. For instance, a recent email
I received contained these lines:

   run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/bugzilla exited with return code 1
   /etc/cron.daily/ntpdate:
   27 Dec 06:29:18 ntpdate[26274]: step time server 128.105.37.11 offset
-5.239138 sec
   /etc/cron.daily/register_dns:
   ez-ipupdate Version 3.0.11b8
   .
   .
   .

You'll notice that three different jobs were run in this example.
However, because the output from all three scripts runs together, it's a
little difficult to read the email. In this case, I missed the bugzilla
error for a couple of days.

It would be great if run-parts could visually distinguish between output
from each job that is run. Possible options include a blank line
between jobs, a ruler (, ) between jobs, or perhaps a ruler and
start/stop timestamp around each job.

Anything that would make it easier to diffentiate between output from
two consecutive jobs would help me.

Thanks!

KEN

Bug#403311: debbugs: soap.cgi sends HTTP 500 server error when given a wrong Content-Type in request

2006-12-27 Thread Amos Shapira

On 17/12/06, Don Armstrong <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

reasonable.

Hi Dan,

Here is a quote from the HTTP RFC:

 - 4xx: Client Error - The request contains bad syntax or cannot
   be fulfilled

 - 5xx: Server Error - The server failed to fulfill an apparently
   valid request

(ref: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec6.html#sec6.1.1)

Since it's a client error to send the wrong header in the HTTP request I'd
expect the server to recognize the client's mistake and send some 4xx error
code.

Thanks for the prompt response (and apologies for taking time to get back to
you, was on short vacation).

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis

just did a dist-upgrade from stable to unstable today.

Firefox initial display updates result in much of the web page being
invisible text, particularly links. For example, on google search results,

Hi

Thank you very much for your work, but i must admit that you should
have informed us earlier, because there is allready a package for
xineliboutput in our svn-repository [1] since August 2006, there was
just the ITP missing.

Unfortunately your ITP was not sent to debian-devel, in this case it
would have been possible to prevent you from doing a lot of double
work.

> Would someone please test my packages and upload them to Debian? It will be

Of course we can test your packages and upload, but i think it would be
be better if you could take a look at the package we have allready in
our repository and if you would continue maintaining the package in
our svn-repository. (I guess that Tobias Grimm [2], who did most of the
work with the package until now, would be very happy if you could help
him with maintaining it.)

(I would be very happy anyway, if you could help us with maintaining
vdr and vdr-related packages, especially the packages we have allready
in the archive [3], and the other packages in the svn-repository on
alioth, which are not part of the official archive yet, any help is
welcome.)

Giving you commit-access to our repository would be no problem, the
only thing we need is your username on alioth.debian.org.

Bug#404769: Subject: xmess-sdl: xmess 106 breaks gamegear emulation

Package: xmess-sdl
Version: 0.106-1
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

xmess (this would apply to xmess-sdl or xmess-x equally) breaks gamegear
emulation in version 106. I know this from seeing the effect here, and it
is confirmed in this bugreport in mess' bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.mess.org/show_bug.cgi?id=967 . Based on the date it was
resolved, and my own
testing of later versions of mess, it was fixed between 110 and 111.

Of course, no versions of xmess exist after 106, but perhaps the change they
applied to fix gamegear (it seems like it was a simple one) could be
ferreted out and applied to xmess 106. Barring that, it would be great to see
sdlmess/mame replace xmess/mame in debian, as it is actually still
maintained upstream.

probable cause:
   www.linuxprinting.org says:
"As the PPD files are contained in the driver package we will not
provide PPD files here on linuxprinting.org."
since they weren't included on linuxprinting.org, apparently they
did not make it into foomatic even though splix is included.

workaround.
   gdi works

printconf has similar problem:
Configuring Samsung ML-1710 on usb:/dev/usb/lp0 with splix
  driver as queue "ml1710_1".
There is neither a custom PPD file nor the driver database
entry contains sufficient data to build a PPD file.

Bug#404618: installation-report - sarge "thanks"

2006-12-27 Thread Rob Mitchell

Thanks for the info. I'm really excited about playing with Etch.

Pax,
Rob

Frans Pop wrote:

The kernels used by the Sarge installer (both 2.4 and 2.6) are known to

You have two options:
- Install Etch [1], which is expected to be released very soon.
- Use an *unofficial* Sarge image with backported kernels and
related utilities [2]. Note that this image is not supported.

Closing your report as SATA support in Sarge is a known issue.

Cheers,

Bug#395917: babygimp: doesn't work with current version of perl-tk

2006-12-27 Thread Kenneth Pronovici

On 12/27/06, Gunnar Wolf <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hi,

Any update on babygimp's status? If it no longer works and cannot be
fixed, maybe the best course of action is to remove it from Etch?

AFAIK, babygimp should already be removed from Etch per an email I
sent earlier to the release team. I checked qa.debian.org (on my
maintainer page) and no version of babygimp is currently listed in
testing, so I think things are OK.

I haven't had time to dig in and see what else can be easily done to
fix the problem, and I have not received any other emails from
interested parties. I will probably remove the package from Debian
entirely sometime after etch is released.

Bug#361805: bug-buddy: fails to update bug information and crashes afterwards

2006-12-27 Thread Ryan Finnie

The same thing happens for me after a fresh install. "Needs update",
downloads stuff, crashes, "needs update", downloads 2 updates,
crashes, won't run again, even if I do not download updates. However,
the "3rd update" never appears for me.

If you do get in this situation, I did find that removing
~/.gnome2/bug-buddy.d/ brings it back to a point where at least it
doesn't crash every time.

Syndicate is an isometric sci-fi action game created by Bullfrog
in 1993. Freesynd attempts to provide a free engine, while using
the data taken from the original game.

Status:
   * The first level is "playable".
   * Most of the menus are complete and functional.
   * Some juttering of agent movement has been noted.
   * Agent AI is different from the original game.
   * No trees or doors on the map.
   * The minimap is not complete.
   * Tax collection and other functionality of the world map are not done.

(Right now it's targeted for experimental/contrib).

Bug#369670: timidity partially fixes

2006-12-27 Thread Edward Guldemond
I installed timidity after I reported that -nomusic fixed things. After
doing so, removing -nomusic allowed the game to be played without
locking, however, the music sounds terrible. I have installed the
freepats package, and yet the music still sounds horrible. I am
therefore renaming the bug.

According to lspci, I have a "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237
AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)".

Bug#404760: inetutils-inetd: [in.tftpd-hpda] received address was not AF_INET

2006-12-27 Thread Luca Capello
Package: inetutils-inetd
Version: 2:1.5.dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal

Hello,

in the process of setting up dhcp3 + tftpd-hpa [1] to install Debian
etch via netboot (as explained at [2]), I got in touch with something
I consider a bug in inetutils-inetd.

The PXE client could obtain the address from the dhcp3 client, but
trying to connect to the tftpd, it shows the message "PXE-E32: TFTP
open timeout". On the server syslog, I've the following error:

in.tftpd[15638]: received address was not AF_INET, please check your
  inetd config
 inetd[15633]: /usr/sbin/in.tftpd: exit status 0x4c00

FYI, I tried the same dhcp3 + tftpd-hpa configuration with
openbsd-inetd and it works out-of-the-box. Moreover, if I stop inetd
and then I start tftpd-hpa as a daemon, the netboot continues without
any problem.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Bug#404759: libxul0d: Page jumps up and down when trying to click on links

2006-12-27 Thread Sam Morris
Package: libxul0d
Version: 1.8.0.8-1
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

The following has bugged me for years (in Firefox too)... I hope you can
reproduce it.

The problem is that as soon as I click on a link, the page scrolls up
and I miss. Usually this won't happen until I have had a page open for a
while and have scrolled the page by searching for text.

This happens often on pages with lots of links, such as
.
I can make it happen by going there and then:

 1. Pressing Ctrl+F
 2. Typing in 'keyboard'
 3. Pressing Ctrl+G until the search wraps past the end of the document
and starts at the beginning
 4. Clicking on a link

Bug#282183: Info received (nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686: severe display update problems)

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis

Forgot to mention:
Video Card: XFX GF 6600 256MB DDR2 DUAL DVI TV PCI-E Ver F.5

After some more adventures, which included making X hang the machine,
reverting to vesa (and losing my second monitor and glx accelleration),
etc. I found a workaround:

workaround (from console, not X11):
 - Install old gcc (still in cache, fortunately):
 dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/gcc-4.0-base_4.0.3-3_i386.deb
 dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/gcc-4.0_4.0.3-3_i386.deb
 - Change symlink to point to old version
 rm /usr/bin/gcc
(cd /usr/bin; ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc )
 - downloaded new driver from www.nvidia.com
 - sh /dist/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run

Apparently it was a conflict between the new x.org and the old nvidia
driver.

Recommend packaging up the new driver and compiling it with both gcc-4.0
and gcc-4.1 for kernel-2.6.16-1-686.

Bug#404489: sendmail-bin: Fails to upgrade, not starting now

2006-12-27 Thread Richard A Nelson

On Wed, 27 Dec 2006, Fourat Zouari wrote:

Yes, unfortunately they are normal :(

They will go away with sendmail X, or sooner if I get the time to
complete a better sendmail.mc/cf parser (which all becomes a non-issue
with sendmail X, which is why I've not spent alot of time on it).

* And what do you mean by : "so, you have somehow managed to have a
localized start-stop-daemon" i didnt do anything special to choose to use a
localized version of it

* It worked with /sbin/start-stop-daemon
* It faileed with /usr/local/sbin/start-stop-daemon
* Debian does not, to the best of my knowledge, ship
  /usr/local/sbin/start-stop-daemon

The logical assumption, is therefore, that you - or a predecessor
for some reason created /usr/local/sbin/start-stop-daemon - and that
version is failing to handle the current sendmail script - and probably
a few other scripts that you just have not yet noticed.

* As for running instances of sendmail, it seems that it never go down
since the start-stop-daemon didnt really work

Very likely.

You need to try and track down the reason for /usr/local/sbin/start-stop-daemon
being there - it will likely cause other problems for you...

Hi,

After reading bug #383342 I understood I had the same problem. I
should not post at 3h30am ...
You can maybe add a comment in each ifup/ifdown script file explaining
the usage of $IF_VLAN_RAW_DEVICE and a reference to the man page
vlan-interfaces.

The version number in /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libavcodec.pc is gratuitously

contains the following tests:

  PKG_CHECK_MODULES([FFMPEG_POSTPROC], [libpostproc >= 51.11.0])

Bug#388702: librep: setitimer will need a range check

2006-12-27 Thread Luis Rodrigo Gallardo Cruz
reassign 388702 librep
tag 388702 upstream patch
thanks

Hi Christian,

This bug, originally reported to sawfish, was traced by people on
sawfish-list to inside librep. It seems that the patch will be mandatory
in future kernels. Since I don't know if upstream will be updated to
include this patch, I forward it to you.

- Forwarded message from Michal Jaegermann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -

Subject: setitimer will need a range check
From: Michal Jaegermann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2006 17:35:06 -0700
To: sawfish-list@gnome.org

The current version of 'man setitimer' for Linux says the following:

POSIX.1-2001 says that setitimer() should fail if a tv_usec value is
specified that is outside of the range 0 to 99. However, Linux
does not give an error, but instead silently adjusts the corresponding
seconds value for the timer. In the future (scheduled for March 2007),
this non-conformance will be repaired: existing applications should be
fixed now to ensure that they supply a properly formed tv_usec value.

With a library which is current enough I am seeing such entries
in log files:

setitimer: sawfish (pid = 3894) provided invalid timeval it_value:
tv_sec = 59 tv_usec = 100

To satisfy the above the follwing change in librep would do:

--- librep/src/timers.c.itimer 2002-03-01 22:22:53.0 -0700
+++ librep/src/timers.c 2006-12-26 17:00:14.0 -0700
@@ -106,9 +106,12 @@ setup_next_timer (void)
 {
 #ifdef HAVE_SETITIMER
struct itimerval it, tem;
+   long usec;
it.it_interval.tv_usec = 0;
it.it_interval.tv_sec = 0;
-   it.it_value.tv_usec = timer_chain->rel_msecs * 1000;
+   usec = timer_chain->rel_msecs * 1000;
+   usec = usec < 100 ? (usec < 0 ? 0 : usec ) : 99;
+   it.it_value.tv_usec = usec;
it.it_value.tv_sec = timer_chain->rel_secs;
setitimer (ITIMER_REAL, &it, &tem);
 #else

Strictly speaking one should likely reduce the range for tv_usec and
adjust tv_sec value accordingly, ie. 60 and 0 in the situation recorded
in logs, but in practice the above should likely be enough.

   Michal

Bug#404754: libgtk2.0-dev: Missing gdkwindow-x11.h

Package: libgtk2.0-dev
Version: 2.8.20-3

I’m not sure if this really is a bug or whatever. I wanted to apply a patch
which would enable a Mac-like menubar for all GTK based applications. In this
patch a header file named „gdkwindow-x11.h“ should be included. But this file
exists nowhere in the Debian universe. (At least it looks like that to me after
looking on packages.d.o and into the package of libgtk2.0-dev from
Experimental.)

Can someone clarify this issue? Am I or is this package missing something?

Bug#404752: ekiga: (powerpc arch) sound seems to be broken when using Logitech Quickcam pro 4000 / pwc module

2006-12-27 Thread Frederic Daniel Luc Lehobey
Package: ekiga
Version: 2.0.3-2
Severity: important

Hi,

Sound is transmitted but completely broken (like bursts or improper
harmonics) when calling from ekiga (etch, powerpc) to gnomemeeting
(sarge, i386) using h323 protocol. (Could it be related to
endianness?)

I am using the pwc module for a Quickcam Pro 4000 and its microphone.

Notice that gnomemeeting is working perfectly for the sound with
exactly the same hardware and settings (hence attributing the bug to
ekiga) on the host.

Thanks for your work on ekiga,
Frédéric Lehobey

PS : just for the fun, while gnomemeeting is working for the sound on
my powerpc machine, it is not the same for the images (see #404695)
hence neither gnomemeeting nor ekiga is fully usable on powerpc
etch... :-)

Bug#383870: fetchmail: no POP3 QUIT after SIGPIPE from SMTP listener

2006-12-27 Thread Matthias Andree
Please retry with 6.3.5 or newer and see if that solves the problem.
Fetchmail 6.3.5 dropped use of SIGPIPE altogether and ignores this
signal. Instead, it will rely on EPIPE to be asserted and rely on its
error handling.

Bug#397350: Debian packages for vdr-xineliboutput ready, need sponsor

2006-12-27 Thread Timo Weingärtner
Hello,

I made Debian packages for vdr-xineliboutput.

My mentor Philipp Kern helped me with the versions before with tips and
testing. Unfortunately he is currently unable to test the packages.

Would someone please test my packages and upload them to Debian? It will be
the first upload since some file headers needed to be fixed upstream first.

Packages for i386 and amd64 can be found at [1].

The corresponding ITP bug is #397350 [2].

Greetings,
Timo

For Etch it's too late to include newer driver snapshots, unless they
fix RC bugs.

Generally I'm not a fan of external driver snapshots providing a more
recent version than linux-2.6. They're a PITA to track security-support-wise
when they get shipped in a stable release, they confuse users and they
sometimes introduce additional bugs due when kernel API changes break things.

So, I'd recommend to remove wacom-source from sid as well.

Cheers,
Moritz

the proftpd in sarge is still vulnerable to CVE-2005-4816:

Buffer overflow in mod_radius in ProFTPD before 1.3.0rc2 allows remote

Bug#404749: gcc-4.1: gcc 4.1 breaks kernel module compile

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis
Package: gcc-4.1
Version: 4.1.1-21
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Perhaps I should have said it breaks the entire system because depending
on what drivers you need, most GUI applications are severely affected
and you have no reasonable way to try new driver versions.

I just did a dist-upgrade. Kernel version 2.6.16-1-686

You can't recompile kernel modules because the kernel was compiled with
gcc 4.0 and you can not compile loadable kernel modules with gcc 4.1 for
a kernel compiled with 4.0. Actually, you can compile them but you can't
load them because of the kernel version difference. Without the ability
to compile kernel modules, you can't recompile the nvidia drivers (direct
from nvidia). And there are SEVERE display update problems in the
current configuration.

gcc-4.1 should not have been put in unstable without also putting
in a new kernel version that was compiled with 4.1 as well as all the
packages which include loadable kernel modules. Also, gcc-4.1
should have had "conflicts with kernel-2.6.16-1-686, etc.".

See bug #4047244 (kernel) and #282183 (nvidia drivers)

When using fuse file system, kernel version 7, davfs2 crashed. But this is the

Bug#344286: COMPLETE problems...

2006-12-27 Thread Steve McIntyre
Hi Vladimir,

I'm going through picking up on old debian-cd bugs, and I'm surprised
to see yours. We're using COMPLETE=0 in the daily build scripts (and
have been for a *very* long time), and all seems to work. Do you still
have this problem?

Bug#312878: Re-checking old bugs

2006-12-27 Thread Steve McIntyre
I'm going through old debian-cd bugs, and I must say I'm puzzled by
this one. I haven't seen anybody else report this at all, and I'd
expect to if it was a problem? Can you recheck and confirm that this
is a problem please?

Otherwise I'll have to mark this bug closed.

Bug#404701: wmcalc: Buggy math, not suitable for release

2006-12-27 Thread Gunnar Wolf
severity 404701 wishlist
thanks

Hi,

I am degrading this bug from RC to wishlist - This program _is_
working as it is often expected. Wmcalc mimics a pocket calculator,
where all operators have equal precedence, as its interface lacks (or,
to be more correct, is designed not to provide, in order to save
space) parentheses or other means to properly provide nesting and
proper precedence.

Wmcalc is designed to be as small as possible. Given its interface, I
would be surprised by it if it applied higher precedence to some
operators than to others.

Greetings,

Indeed. Then it would be "charset_default=Windows-1252" or

Bug#404701: eh?

2006-12-27 Thread Joey Hess
I'm having a hard time taking this bug's severity seriously.

Firstly, it's not uncommon for very cheap calculators (especially old
ones) to evaluate each operation immediately[1][2]. Doing order of operations
requires ram to store pending expressions. Doing order of operations
in a usable manner also requires paren keys to override the order, and
a display to show the expression. Otherwise you're just typing blind and
hoping that the calculator happens to do the right thing, even with
order of operations.

Which brings me to my second point, which is that a calculator is a
tool, and it's up to the user to use it correctly. I would never rely on
any random new calculator like this to get the order right, so I'd
always feed it simple expressions in the correct order anyway, and press
= after each, and so no matter what arbitrary ordering or lack of
ordering the calculator happens to use would't matter.

So I'd be more concerned with calculators dropping precision at the
number of digets that can be displayed, and other issues noted in this
bug report than this OoO issue, and I don't think it's RC.
(#debian-release seems to agree.)

In closing, I can't belive you suckered me into typing so much about a
program I'd never use. Go qalc!

Bug#404742: deborphan: Says wrong information about package's priority

2006-12-27 Thread Teemu Likonen
Package: deborphan
Version: 1.7.23
Severity: normal

It seems that deborphan does not report package's priority correctly. In
my Etch system the command "deborphan -aP" says for example:

main/develgnu-efi optional
main/libs libldap-2.3-0optional

But "aptitude show" tells that the former has a "standard" priority and
the latter is "important". Both were automatically installed by the
Debian installer.

Bug#404743: CVE-2006-6698: local DoS vulnerability due to insecure tempdir handling

2006-12-27 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: gconf2
Version: 2.16.0-3
Severity: important

A vulnerability has been reported in gconfd:

The GConf daemon (gconfd) in GConf 2.14.0 creates temporary files
under directories with names based on the username, even when
GCONF_GLOBAL_LOCKS is not set, which allows local users to cause a
denial of service by creating the directories ahead of time, which
prevents other users from using Gnome.

At the top of `LC_ALL=C iconv --list`:

The following list contain all the coded character sets known. This does
not necessarily mean that all combinations of these names can be used for
the FROM and TO command line parameters. One coded character set can be
listed with several different names (aliases).

  437, 500, 500V1, 850, 851, 852, 855, 856, 857, 860, 861, 862, 863, 864, 865,
  [...other charsets]

Maybe ia's a Debian specific note.

Bug#404740: Log-file is not written, after it has been rotated (daemon-mode)

2006-12-27 Thread Daniel Leidert
Package: fetchmail
Version: 6.3.6~rc3-1
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I will try to explain:

fetchmail runs in daemon-mode with the following (relevant) options in
/etc/fetchmailrc:

set logfile /var/log/fetchmail
set no syslog

So let's say, I start fetchmail in daemon mode (user: fetchmail):

/etc/init.d/fetchmail start

Now my /var/log/fetchmail(.1.gz) log at last says:

fetchmail: Mi 27 Dez 2006 20:19:49 CET: schlafe 1800 Sekunden lang
(sleeping at ... for the non-German readers)

Then the file has been rotated and a new /var/log/fetchmail was created.
But fetchmail did not write to the new file. The file stayed empty until
the daemon was restarted, although there were several fetchmail runs
during the log-rotation and the daemon restart.

I observed this issue several times. Please tell me, if you need further
information. I will try to provide them.

Regards, Daniel

Bug#282183: nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686: severe display update problems

2006-12-27 Thread Mark Whitis
Package: nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-686
Followup-For: Bug #282183

I am experiencing similar problems after doing a dist-upgrade today.
The problems severely affect the usability of most applications.

They do not affect the login prompt, instead the affects were noticed on:
  - gnome-panel applications menu
Sometimes when I pull up a submenu, not all of menu item names are
displayed (instead you have white) but the space the occupied is there
and the icons are there. The missing items are on the lower portion
of the menu. Happens about 15% of the time a menu is displayed and
is more likely on longer submenus (which means takes longer to clear).
Mousing over the menu items (which causes them to be redrawn with and
without highlight, unhides the items.
  - firefox/iceweasel
Very often when I load a page, most of the content in the window
is missing. If I do a google search on anything, for example,
some or usually all of the search results that appear are invisable,
except for the underlines (which I guess are drawn last). I can
repaint the missing text by scrolling or dragging a window over it.
Happens about 100% of the time when displaying google search results.
Sometimes, the page is painted then most of it is erased, except
for the underlines and the text for the first couple search results.
 - Gcalctool
Buttons are drawn but text on the buttons is invisible.
text reappers if I drag cursor over the buttons.
 - Kcalc
Buttons are drawn but text on most buttons is invisible.
Sometimes the text reappears on mouseover, sometimes it doesn't
First two items on menu bar invisable; mousing over the menu bar
erases text.
Pulldown menu text invisible, stays invisable.
 - Kedit
menus unusable - they start invisable and stay invisable when you mouse
   over.
menu bar text appears but is erased when moused over

 - KHangMan
   menu bar invisible, stays invisable
   menu text invisible, stays invisible
 - GnomeMeeting
   menu bar ok
pulldown menus intermittently invisible but redrawn (except for greyedout
   items) when you mouse over

emacs and terminal windows look ok. Filezilla looks ok, but I didn't do
much with it. Haven't tried much else, except some apps that start
with an empty window anyway. OpenOffice.org writer menus look ok but
the main window starts blank, anyway.

This appears to affect text, not images. And maybe only proportionally
spaced text. Menu bars, toolbars, and title bars seem unaffected, except
for Kde apps. Seems to affect gnome apps, kde apps, and apps which
appear to use neither. However, kde apps are rendered completely unusable.

more likely to affect the first draw than expose events or scrolling.

Looks suspiciously like a race condition between clear window and
display update which are occuring concurrently.

I tried to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run, the version of
the nvidia driver I used before, to fix the problem, but it could not
compile the kernel module because kernel and gcc were incompatible.
I accidently told it to go ahead in spite of the warning (stupid yes/no
questions instead of install/abort) and it failed to load the new module.
Surprisingly, X still started after that. Probably won't after next reboot.

Does this bug still exist in version 1.0.8756+1 of this package? [y|N|q|?]?
answered no because I wasn't sure what version was included but
strings /lib/modules/2.6.16-1-686/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
says 8762 which is newer and dpkg says the package version is 1.0.8756+1.

Bug#402898: /etc/bogofilter.cf should define UTF-8 as default charset since it is Debian's default

Maybe cp1252 would even be more useful, since it is an over-set of
iso-8859-1 and it is used by a lot of mailers running on another
well-known OS.

Bug#404635: devscripts: GREP_OPTIONS seems to be the cause of this problem

2006-12-27 Thread Kamaraju Kusumanchi
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.9.26
Followup-For: Bug #404635

A little more debugging, I found that the culprit is either of GREP_OPTIONS,
GREP_COLOR environment variables. Both these options are documented in the man
page of grep. On my machine I have

$echo $GREP_OPTIONS
--color=always

$echo $GREP_COLOR
1;32

With these variables, I get the errors reported in the first email of this bug
report. However If I unset GREP_OPTIONS then devscripts seem to work fine.

$unset GREP_OPTIONS

$who-uploads texmacs devscripts
Uploads for texmacs:

2.9.26 to unstable: Julian Gilbey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Now that the problem is known, a fix might be easy :-)

I checked how bogofilter works with messages with different encodings
and Content-Type headers. Bogofilter works as it should: it checks the
message's Content-Type header and get's the charset from there. With
"unicode=yes" (which is the default) bogofilter converts the message to
UTF-8 and stores words to it's database.

If charset is not defined in message's Content-Type headers, bogofilter
uses it's own charset_default setting (default is ISO-8859-1). I think
ISO-8859-1 is a good default: I believe most of the messages without
Content-Type headers are in some kind of Western European charset.
Probably most of the spam is English.

So, my bug report was pretty pointless from bogofilter's point of view.
:) I guess this bug can be closed. At least I downgraded the severity to
"normal".

There remains this KMail problem, though. Maybe it's worth filing a new
report.

Bug#404738: xserver-xorg-video-ati: Freeze after rotating 3D view in Blender

2006-12-27 Thread Sven Arvidsson
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.6.3-2
Severity: important

When rotating the 3D viewport with the middle mouse button in Blender
2.42a-5, X seems to freeze. The screen doesn't update and X does not
respond to keyboard or mouse input. The system itself does not seem to
crash as my music is still playing in the background, still I'm forced
to reboot.

I'm using a ATI Radeon 9100
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R200 QM

Bug#404358: atari-fdisk-cross: after Etch upgrade to kernel 2.6.18, no longer works

Herm, because atari-fdisk directly calls Linux' _llseek() without
taking care about the size of arguments, without taking care of 64bits
architectures, etc. while GNU libc has been providing a sane way for
doing 64bits lseek() for a long time. Here is a patch for using that
instead.
