Bug#370792: ftruncate can fail to extend files
Peter Cordes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Note that the ftruncate man page says ftruncate can fail (when called to extend a file) on filesystems like VFAT. I don't know if vfat even supports sparse files, but you need to make sure the file actually ends up at the right length, unless you want to just return an error when someone uses cp --sparse to a lame filesystem. VFAT does not support sparse files, and so cp --sparse=always simply creates a file full of zero bytes when copying a sparse file to such a file system. No problem. You can demonstrate it like this on a Linux system. BTW, cp's use of ftruncate works fine (returns 0) there, but even if it were to fail, there is code to handle that. cd /tmp dd bs=1 seek=128K of=sp /dev/null 2 /dev/null dd if=/dev/zero of=1 bs=8192 count=50 2 /dev/null mkdir mnt mkfs -t vfat 1 /dev/null mount -oloop 1 mnt cd mnt cp --sparse=always /tmp/sp . du -sk sp The above prints this: 128 sp Run this to clean up: cd /tmp umount /tmp/mnt rm -r 1 mnt sp -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#408277: pyftpd: installation fails: file does not exist: /usr/share/pyftpd/log_simple_config.py
The problem is that pycentral tries to install the _config.py files, which are symlinks to files in /etc/pyftpd and aren't configured yet (that is, they're suffixed .dpkg-new) pycentral can be called with a special -x option which excludes modules. The exclude pattern could be 'config.py' (since 'config' excludes real files) However this approach didn't work for me (and dh_pycentral doesn't support excluding, for some reason) If you change the direction of the symlinks, however, you can get an installable package. That means you'll get real packages under /usr/share, and symlinks in /etc. I'm not really sure if this is Policy-compliant, but you should also state those files as conffiles. Bug#405519: Patch for the 3.2.2-8.1 NMU of apmd
Dear maintainer of apmd, 3 days ago, I sent you a notice announcing my intent to upload a NMU of your package to fix its pending l10n issues. You either agreed for this NMU or did not respond to my notices. I finally looked closer and discovered that the only debconf templates is an abusive note and, anyway, deal with upgrades from pre-sarge versions. So I finally built an NMU which just removes this note. I will now upload this NMU to DELAYED/0-DAY (which means an immediate upload). The NMU patch is attached to this mail. The NMU changelog is: Source: apmd Version: 3.2.2-8.1 Distribution: unstable Urgency: low Maintainer: Christian Perrier [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2007 11:09:17 +0100 Closes: 388819 405519 405861 Changes: apmd (3.2.2-8.1) unstable; urgency=low . * Non-maintainer upload to fix pending l10n and debconf issues. * Remove the now compeltely useless debconf note which deals with upgrade from pre-sarge versions. Forwarded mail from upstream author. Executive summary: the bug is fixed upstream, I will package the new version soon. Cheers. - Forwarded message from Daniel Foote [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2007 17:59:27 +0800 From: Daniel Foote [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Stefano Zacchiroli [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#404648: gpscorrelate: dumps core on gpx file from Garmin eTrex via gpsbabel Hello. The bug has been fixed. A new version (1.5) is now on my website. I don't know what has to be done from here to pass this information up. The bug was caused by poor input handling in my code. The GPX file that was attached had a track segment in it without timestamps - such as would occur when the track had been saved into more permanent memory - the GPS then strips out the (rather useful) timestamp information. gpscorrelate now ignores track points without timestamp data. The original bug poster should be made aware that only tracks with timestamps are really useful - the file he sent had some tracks with timestamp data (ie, tracks from the working memory on the GPS). To ensure the useful timestamps are kept, they will have to ensure that the download is done directly from the GPSs working memory. Any other problems - let me know. Anyway, apologies for the delay. Hi there, i just noticed that today took place another release for ulogd's package. Since there wasn't a call for translations for this package the inclusion of the Portuguese translation was missed by 1 minute, 48 seconds! I believe that with a Call for translations this can be avoided and more languages could be supported in each package of our universal operating system. Thus, users that don't have a ~/.winerc (or ~/.wine/config) file will not be able to run Wine, unless they set up a ~/.wine/config file for themselves. This is easily done with the winesetup tool, found in the winesetuptk package (or else each user can copy the old /etc/wine.conf to ~/.winerc and let wine convert it). If you remove the /etc/wine.conf file, then winesetup will launch automatically for users that don't have a config file, instead of requiring the users to do any of the above themselves. msgstr Wine ja no carrega el /etc/wine.conf per defecte. #. I can't say, sorry. I try to give some hints about how to solve/workaround people problems. But, I don't have enough knowledge to explain how/why it works :/ By the way, just removing the usefbdev line won't help here. From the r128 manpage, usefbdev is on by default on powerpc. You're citing a requirement of policy that applies to *config files*. Files under /var/cache are *not* config files. OK, but that was the cause. Now, files under /etc are configuration files. In my case, /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf was not present before the upgrade (I had enabled bitmaps via dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config a few weeks ago). I don't see how it can be both in the public domain and copyright FSF, and I don't see why the FSF wouldn't use the GPL (or maybe a BSD/MIT licence) in this case. I'm reporting this so that Debian may consider the question and take appropriate action, if only to record the matter's considered and that Debian may freely distribute the software. Hopefully, an official from the FSF will concur with Debian's decision. No. Check it out in /etc/dhclient-script. We can change that, of course, but using the enter/exit hooks sounds easier. if i get this right you are proposing letting dhclient write the file then immediately writing over it, that sounds like a dirty and confusing hack to me. Furthermore it will break any apps that happen to read resolv.conf (and possiblly cache it) between dhclient putting the wrong stuff in and your script replacing it with the right stuff.
Bug#412286: no call for translations - missed ulogd's Portuguese translation inclusion for 1m48s
Can you please plan a call for translations and another update? Thanks in advance for your cooperation. The planned NMU's for l10n updates are essentially aimed at fixing *pending* bug reports, so they use a very short period of time, which ould make calls for translation updates pointless, ecept for very fast translators (those I ping on IRC currently). So, I prefer not sending such call for translations, also because I'm doing a *lot* of such updates, which would clutter up debian-i18n. I prefer reserving the call for updates to cases which really deserve it. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I can eliminate NFS; that's not involved in my setup. strace and lsof show that the spamd child is very slowly pread64()ing ~/.spamassassin/bayes_toks. I think the problem is simply that Bayes auto-expiry is enabled and is taking way too long. I've turned off bayes_auto_expire here and will set up 'sa-learn --force-expire' or similar to run from cron to see if that helps; it seems to be helping so far. I'm not very impressed with the default configuration, though; it's let through a hundred or so spam messages just today due to spamd timing out while doing token expiry. Manual expiry is a hassle and I'd rather it weren't necessary. Is it possible for only one spamd child to do the expiry while the others proceed as normal (perhaps without learning)? If so, perhaps the parent could avoid distributing work to a child that's busy doing expiry, and could somehow tell spamc to wait longer until that child finishes? tags 409107 + wontfix thanks I personally do not see using the word 'amphetamine' in the manpage as a problem, it's simply a word referring to a package available in Debian. If you see that as a problem then complain with the package maintainer and/or ask the package to be renamed (I would oppose such a request FWIF). As a consequence: I do not see this to be a bug at all in devscripts. For the moment I'm tagging this bug as wontfix, with the deliberate intention of closing it unless someone manage to convince myself that this is a bug. Bug#412194:
Hello again, i hope, i may take the liberty of presenting you a working solution. So the late grave bug (sorry for this again!) hopefully will be closed quite soon. a) testing info Running 2.6.18-4-k7 without nosmp i looked what clocksources are actually available and which one is used: www:~# cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/* jiffies tsc pit pit Well, although jiffies and tsc were present and even of higher position and value, 2.6.18-4-k7 still chose pit as clocksource. Interestingly acpi_pm was neither shown nor detected (dmesg log): #ACPI: Unable to locate RSDP #... #ACPI: Interpreter disabled. #Linux Plug and Play Support v0.97 (c) Adam Belay #pnp: PnP ACPI: disabled As i do not use acpi=off or any similar it is hard to guess, why exactly 2.6.18-4-k7 fails to detect the ACPI Root System Description Pointer. Useless to say, why my previous clocksource=acpi_pm was pretty braindead. :D b) possible solution (at least over here :P) No problem, life is great without ACPI, as far as i currently believe :P, so let's slap 2.6.18-4-k7 for serving us pit and not using the Time Step Clock (tsc) we can enjoy since the very first pentium cpu and that 2.6.18-4-k7 has already detected above: www:~# echo tsc /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/ current_clocksource www:~# cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/* jiffies tsc pit tsc www:~# Now, once tsc is on command everything runs smooth again. No freezes. Just smp heaven as it used to be. :) I decided to put clocksource=tsc as a boot option for 2.6.18-4-k7. Rebooted. And my 2.6.18-4-k7 system is up for hours without freezes again. @ Figaro ynegorp_at_charter_dot_net: Please test this, as it is important to know, whether this solution is usefull for your system also. Please let us know asap, so Steve can close this grave thingy, disable or downgrade pit-support in favour of tsc and heat up the autobuilders. Thank you! 8) @ Steve: As i don't exactly know, whether some user might truly need pit on k7-platform as clocksource, i leave the above described decision up to you..:P (shame on me!) Bug#380226: NTFS (partition) not recreated correctly after resize:incorrect start sector
Since this bug report is very long, I was not able to understand what was really going wrong until I met Frans on Friday and discussed it in person. Let me state the problem as I understand it, both to confirm that I understand it correctly and to serve as a quick summary for anyone else coming newly to the bug report. Summary of the bug Parted is not capable of resizing NTFS. Therefore, when resizing a partition containing an NTFS, it should never move the start of the partition and it should only move the end of the partition so long as it will still include the whole of the filesystem. However, if the partition is the first partition on a DOS-partitioned disk it may move the start of the partition. Investigation and hypothesis I looked through the code used for resizing and I believe I can see the source of this bug. do_resize() gets two constraints: the bounds of the neighbouring partitions, generated by snap_to_boundaries(), and one from the filesystem code, generated by ped_file_system_get_resize_constraint(). Then it combines them using ped_constraint_intersect() and passes the combined constraint into ped_disk_set_partition_geom(). If a filesystem is not resizable (as NTFS is not) then there is no function for getting the resize constraint and ped_file_system_get_resize_constraint() returns NULL. Here NULL seems to be an error value, because the resize is not meant to be unconstrained. ped_constraint_intersect() returns NULL if either parameter is NULL. Here again NULL is treated as an error value - if it meant no constraint then when one parameter is NULL the function should return the other parameter value. However, ped_disk_set_partition_geom() will quite happily continue if the constraint parameter is NULL. Here NULL is treated as no constraint and the error has been silently ignored! I don't think alignment restrictions have anyting to do with the bug. Proposed solution If I understood this correctly, the first step to fixing this would be to make do_resize() or ped_disk_set_partition_geom() fail and report an error if the constraint is NULL. However, this will disable resizing of any partition if the filesystem resizing is not supported. So the second step would be to change ped_file_system_get_resize_constraint() to return the correct constraint where the filesystem does not support resizing, as stated in the problem summary. Status I have not been able to test this as I do not have a suitable virtual machine or virtual disk system available. (Is there a way to make the kernel look for partitions on loopback devices?) The following patch might help to confirm my hypothesis: diff -Nru /tmp/5n58ke8AFZ/parted-1.7.1/parted/parted.c /tmp/oqAdmNqKfm/parted-1.7.1/parted/parted.c --- /tmp/5n58ke8AFZ/parted-1.7.1/parted/parted.c2007-01-19 20:29:41.0 +0100 +++ /tmp/oqAdmNqKfm/parted-1.7.1/parted/parted.c2007-02-24 18:25:12.0 +0100 @@ -1568,6 +1568,53 @@ return 0; } +static void +print_alignment (const PedAlignment* alignment) +{ + if (alignment == NULL) { + printf (NULL); + } else { + printf ( (PedAlignment) { offset: %lld, grain_size: %lld }, + alignment-offset, alignment-grain_size); + } +} + +static void +print_geometry (const PedGeometry* geom) +{ + if (geom == NULL) { + printf (NULL); + } else { + printf ( (PedGeometry) { dev: (PedDevice) { path: \%s\, }, start: %lld, length: %lld, end: %lld }, + geom-dev-path, geom-start, geom-length, geom-end); + } +} + +static void +print_constraint (const PedConstraint* constraint) +{ + if (constraint == NULL) { + printf (NULL\n); + } else { + printf ( (PedConstraint) {\n\tstart_align: ); + print_alignment (constraint-start_align); + printf (,\n + \tend_align: ); + print_alignment (constraint-end_align); + printf (,\n + \tstart_range: ); + print_geometry (constraint-start_range); + printf (,\n + \tend range: ); + print_geometry (constraint-end_range); + printf (,\n + \tmin_size: %lld,\n + \tmax_size: %lld + \n}, + constraint-min_size, constraint-max_size); + } +} + static int do_resize (PedDevice** dev) { @@ -1610,13 +1657,22 @@ goto error_destroy_constraint; ped_partition_set_system (part, NULL); } else { + PedConstraint *fs_constraint, *part_constraint; + fs = ped_file_system_open (part-geom); if (!fs) goto error_destroy_disk; + fs_constraint = ped_file_system_get_resize_constraint (fs); +

Bug#412297: manpages-dev: manpage error.3.gz conflicts with qmail
On Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 05:40:35AM -0500, Armando Romero wrote: Package: manpages-dev Version: 2.02-2 Severity: normal I think the qmail is not directly in Debian, but is very important software for mail servers. The man page of manpages-dev /usr/share/man/man3/error.3.gz conflicts with qmail same filename, and it shall be renamed to something else. That's interesting. The relevant page is this, no? http://www.qmail.org/qmail-manual-html/man3/error.html The ideal situation is one where qmail doesn't ship a page called error.3 but rather error.3qmail or something besides error entirely. I have no particular confidence that this is obtainable. I don't think Joey will want to muck with diversions for this, and I don't think that qmail-src (is that what you used?) will either. It isn't clear to me what other name could possibly be given to the error.3 manpage, since there is a glibc function called error, information about which I expect to see when I invoke man 3 error. manpages-dev *could* be set to Replace: qmail (or whatever the package name is), but this doesn't really have the desired effect even if one of the two packages were set to rename/drop the page for the next release.. Bug#408529: ucf: Better documentation: Not a replacement for debconf handling
Manoj Srivastava [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: severity 408529 wishlist Severity set to `wishlist' from `wishlist' Am I correct in reading into this some criticism of the way I reported this bug? Can you be more explicit, please? reassign 408529 developers-reference And is there a specific reason why you did not remove the patch tag upon reassigning? Don't we already have a policy directive to not overwrite user changes? And does not the dev ref say packages should not ask any more questions than needed? Of course, but that's not what this bug report is about. Creating a new file using debconf, and using ucf to ask the user whether or not to use that, is poor development practice, and should be so mentioned in the dev ref about proper handling of configuration files. One should not clutter up ucf documentation with a treatise on proper practice. I still think that ucf's manpage is a proper place to document this, in order to try to prevent ucf's frequent misuse. If you think this should rather be done in the developers reference (which currently does not mention ucf, let alone advertise its use), could you go a bit more into detail where you think the right place would be, and what the important bits of information would be? Bug#412242: tetex-bin: mktexpk places some fonts in the current directory
Hi Sergei, thanks for the report. Sergei Ivanov [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Package: tetex-bin Version: 3.0-29 Severity: normal On my system, the command mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+120/600 --dpi 720 lhr10 places the resulting file lhr10.720pk in the current working directory. (The font lhr10 is a cyrillic version of cmr10, I think it belongs to tetex-extra.) [...] The difference between lhr10 and cmr10 is that I have lhr10.tfm and some other lh* files under /var/lib/texmf (they were probably created by fmtutil since I use custom formats with these fonts). I don't think fonts should ever be created there. rm -rf /var/lib/texmf/fonts fixes the problem. Hm, I tried to reproduce this, but I did it as root and the resulting file was created in /var/lib/texmf/fonts were I put the source files, too. From this alone I would conclude that the scripts try to put the files in the same tree as the sources, and use the current directory as fallback if the normal target directory is not writable. I mention this since it means there might be a reason for this behavior... I tried to debug it and found that one of the scripts (maketexnam) finds lhr10.tfm under /var/lib/texmf but fails to recognize that /var/lib/texmf is a system tree. That's correct. mktexnam asks kpsewhich for SYSTEXMF, which is defined in /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf: % The system trees. These are the trees that are shared by all the users. SYSTEXMF = $TEXMFLOCAL;$TEXMFMAIN;$TEXMFDIST According to this description, this should include TEXMFSYSVAR and TEXMFSYSCONFIG. However, it's not as simple as just adding these trees to SYSTEXMF. In mktexnam, MT_VARTEXFONTS is explicitly added to the trees in SYSTEXMF. This variable used to point to /var/cache/fonts, now it points to TEXMFVAR/fonts, with /tmp/IforgotWhat as fallback. /var/lib/texmf/fonts is and never was supposed to contain pk fonts, if I remember correctly. So maybe we should rather find out how these fonts got there. If it is something that might have happened to more users, we may need to cater for it, if it's just a special case on your system, maybe not. Bug#412275: no display and system freezes after adjusting time with KDE clock on 945GM graphic chip
On Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 10:50:44AM +0100, Brice Goglin wrote: Ralph Plawetzki wrote: Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810 Version: 2:1.7.2-4 Severity: important I am running Etch on a HP Compaq nx6310. After seleting 'Adjust Date Time...' from KDE clock I changed the time in the 'Configure - KDE Control Module' dialogue. After pressing 'OK' the screen went dark and the system froze. Did you increase or decrease the time? Does it freeze again if you change the time again? Brice I decreased the time, because the KDE clock show a time that was one hour in the future in comparison to my local time. To decrease the time, I used the down-arrow next to the hour-field in the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue. After that I pressed OK and the screen went dark. Surprisingly to me, the time shown in the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue was different from the time shown in the KDE clock when I opened the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue. KDE clock show me 15:00, and the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue show me 14:00. So the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue had my local time and I tried to decrease it for one hour as described above. By the way when I enter '$ date', I get the same time as in the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue. When the system freezes, I have to turn off the laptop. When it's rebooted, I can reproduce the error by changing the time again. After rebooting, the new (=changed) time has been taken over by the KDE clock and the time shown in the 'Adjust Date Time...'-dialogue. The two times still differ for one hour. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#412340: mailman: upgrade may break archiving
Package: release-notes A mailman issue has come up for the sarge - etch upgrade which we may not be able to fix in time for etch (as upstream has been aware of the issue for more than a year but still hasn't fixed it; we have been aware of that issue only for a few days). An accurate description of the current situation is: If you upgrade mailman at a moment such that a message with non-ASCII encodable subject or sender got archived (i.e. sent to a mailing list that is archived with the built-in pipermail) in the current archive volume, then after the upgrade new messages will fail to be archived with an error like: Uncaught runner exception: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xae in position 6: ordinal not in range(128) Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Queue/Runner.py, line 112, in _oneloop self._onefile(msg, msgdata) File /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Queue/Runner.py, line 170, in _onefile keepqueued = self._dispose(mlist, msg, msgdata) File /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Queue/ArchRunner.py, line 73, in _dispose mlist.ArchiveMail(msg) File /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Archiver/Archiver.py, line 214, in ArchiveMail h.processUnixMailbox(f) File /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Archiver/pipermail.py, line 580, in processUnixMailbox self.add_article(a) File /usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Archiver/pipermail.py, line 632, in add_article If you were keeping both mbox and HTML archives (even if the mbox archives were not made available over HTTP), then you can cure that issue by regenerating the HTML archives (and current-volume pickle database, which is the root of the problem) from scratch with: /var/lib/mailman/bin/arch --wipe listname -- Lionel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#255010: [Bug 84610] device icon mount/umount behavior broken by /etc/fstab edit
Does this still happen in recent KDE versions? I don't know. The original submission contains a 100%-repeatable howto on re-creating the scenario, so one can try and see. Currently, I switched completely to udev-based solutions, so that the fstab contains things like /dev/keycard and it's udev that's responsible for managing the symlink creation in /dev, from keycard to sda1 or sda5 or whatever. Best thing is that previously, if I plugged in my USB digital still camera in before the keycard, then it got mapped /dev/sda instead of the usb memory stick, and if I plugged in keycard together with it, it got /dev/sdb, with udev it happens no more. So udev is the way to go. KDE works fine over this, so for me it makes a good workaround of the original problem, even if it is still present. Bug#412344: A start-up page is http://firefox/
Package: iceweasel Version: 2.0.0.2+dfsg-1 If Iceweasel is started, however it may set up, it will access to http://firefox/. It seems that a problem is in Rev 39813 since it does not reappear in SVN Rev 39812. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
