Bug#418278: Kernel unaligned access

2007-04-23 Thread Frederik Dannemare

I'm seeing the same thing on a Netra, using the 2.6.18-4-sparc64 kernel.

The Netra serves as a name server (BIND) and I haven't noticed anything
being affected by the unaligned access messages.

Besides the already mentioned 'filldir64' messages, I have also seen
'cp_compat_stat64' messages a couple of times.

'filldir64' mostly happens around 06:25. Seems to me like a cron.daily job
is triggering it...

reassign 366940 linux-2.6
thanks

As confirmed by Steve French in
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3775, this bug abouot
cached file modification time being rounded in seconds pertains to the
cifs module in the kernel.

Upstream there is still the Samba Team but the Debian bug does not
belong to the samba source package.

How can it be illegal to distribute? Ebay User Agreements are not law
and Debian is not bound to it.

The _use_ of the program might be a violation of the Ebay User
Agreement, but it's not clear to me that such a restriction is legal in
all juristictions, and I'm not even sure that the entire concept of a
click-through "User Agreement" is legal everywhere. In any case, it's
the user who needs to decide whether or not he want to use it.

That being said, it would of course be nice if the program would make
clear to the user that Ebay doesn't like the program being used, in
order for the user to make an informed decision. (I have no idea if the
program is already doing that or not.)

Greetings,
Bas.

This is a case of whether or not it is legal to (or strictly speaking,
a violation of an agreement to which the user may be a party when
using) a piece of software in a particular fashion, not whether it is
legal to distribute it.

In general, we deal with cases of the letter on -legal (and in general
in the archive) rather than the former.

I've not closed the bug report myself, but I have made the severity
non-RC. Dima: that's your call; you can wait for more -legal
contributors to weigh in, or you can close the report.

Bug#420686: It's not obvious esniper is legal (violation of eBay ToS)

2007-04-23 Thread Sami Liedes
Package: esniper
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.3

[Cc:d to debian-legal]

Hi,

It's not obvious it is legal to distribute this software at all
(probably it either is fit for main or unfit for non-free too). I
suggest a review on debian-legal, since I'm not well versed in (at
least this area of) law. I found nothing about this in debian-legal
archives, so I assume it has not been discussed.

2.2.3 says "Packages must be placed in _non-free_ if they are not
compliant with the DFSG or are encumbered by patents or other legal
issues that make their distribution problematic." (I expected to find
something saying something about software that cannot be distributed
at all, but apparently it's not there, and all the language in other
sections seems very copyright and patent centric.)

eBay TOS (or "User Agreement" in eBay terms) says[1]:

"_Access and Interference_

The Sites contains robot exclusion headers. Much of the information on
the Sites is updated on a real-time basis and is proprietary or is
licensed to eBay by our users or third parties. You agree that you
will not use any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means to
access the Sites for any purpose without our express written
permission.

Additionally, you agree that you will not:

[...]

- bypass our robot exclusion headers or other measures we may use to
prevent or restrict access to the Sites."

Running "msgfmt -o /dev/null -c sv.po" on the attached file gives "parse

They come from the strangely placed "#|" comments (which include the

top of comments (they're usually just before the msgid).

I'm not sure whether this is a bug or not but it could be interesting to
discuss this with your upstream, Santiago.

Strangely, msgfmt was compaining about the file being invalid. I just
removed the "#|" lines which strangely were appearing before other
comments and this has been fixed magically. Weird. This could be a
gettext bug.

fixes this bug. It is still unconfirmed, not accepted and not revisioned
by the upstream maintainer (no maintainer responded to my posts on Gnome

Please test it.

forwarded 410562 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
thanks

Okay, I've now duplicated this behavior and understand it. Basically, a
GL build always attempts to initialize GL and always fails if it can't.
I've forwarded this upstream with a request to fall back on the non-GL
behavior rather than just die for a GL build that can't initialize GL.

Hopefully that will be doable, as building two binaries is unappealing.

Probably so, but at least I have a potential claim under fair use in
that case, and (more importantly) I'm not subjecting Debian to legal
liability. If you want it, great; let me know.

Well, yes, but I am just trying to keep on top of the potential issues.
Not all developers are as up on security as you appear to be, so it was
a general admonishment.

I did look at the code after I sent the message, and it seems to be
probably a bad pointer dereference to a single object, so nothing major.

Yes, I agree, and I could have sworn I did that. Oh, well.

Note that it doesn't have debugging symbols, so it is probably of
dubious value, although the function is a single line of code. When I
tried with debugging symbols, I got another crash, but in a totally
different place (and package). That doesn't inspire confidence...

Whatever you decide is fine. I'm not that picky; the bug is annoying,
but I can work around it.

Very simply, the program that freeze is a TCP server.
Whenever that problem occurs, the service is out of order ...
Even the load-balancer program that wraps on instances of this faulty
server cannot detect the freeze (because of the backlog argument of
listen(2)).

Yes, events prooved it, even if it was not so years ago ... (I am
working with Linux since 1994 and more generaly on Unix system since
1983, but I know "time goes and OS design changes ...")
But, I still think that I am not alone to experiment such an
implementation bug.

Yes, that is the point. I was just asking since when the prohibition of
"unsafe" functions has been declared ? I surely missed something ...
I am also asking if those functions are unsafe because of themselves or
because of called syscall (write(2), brk(2), ...)

That can be it too.
Are you still experienting such freeze ?
If so, you may try the "survfutex -p {pid}" to check it
and then "survfutex -p {pid] -u" to try unfreezing the process.
Let me know if it works for you ...

I suspect also some race condition due to signal blocked at a sad moment
(contingency of fork(), exit() and memory locking-unlocking (SHM ?))
Unfortunately, I am not specializing in using of sys_futex and so cannot
proove it. But I am interessed in further bug-tracking advancement.
Fell free to communicate to anyone that can help us to solve.

Bug#411067: xmms: freezes in a futex

2007-04-23 Thread Label Sarl
Hi,

I experiment a futex freeze too in a self made program.
1) I have a un-freezing technic that uses the ptrace(2) to :
 - attach a frozen process,
 - get the syscall number (checks that it is a sys_futex),
 - get the arguments of sys_futex(2) to check it is a WAIT
and get the adress of the wait.
 - poke a 0 at the adress.
 That all unfreezes the process.
Do you want the code of my survfutex program ?

2) Now, I am tracking the cause and have some informations.
It appears to occur (in my code) during the execution of a
signal handler set for the SIGCLD.
When the father catches the SIGCLD, it performs some action
 like fprintf(3) and free(3).
Of course, it does not occur systematicaly (it would have been too
simple).
When I suppress fprintf() and free() from the signal handler, the
father process never freezes.
My supposition is that the sys_futex() is called from glibc (may be
from brk(2) and some other syscall).
I have two kinds of bug work-arround :
 The first consist in :
- blocking the SIGCLD,
- At some part of the code watch if there is a pending SIGCLD
if so, performs the wait(2) and other action out of a signal
handler. Then remove the sig pending condition.
 The second consist in :
- performing the wait(2) from the signal handler and move the
struct from a list of "alive son" to a list of dead ones.
This is done with a simple linked list technic.
- From outside the signal handler, see if some son are dead.
If so, performs the rest of actions (fprint() to log the death
with the exit status, free() the struct memorizing the son).

Both technics work fine for me.

I hope it will help you.

One last thing, I suppose the bug is a general bug that does not freeze
only xmms.

Rogers Veber.

Hi,

some had already found a bug fix (on IMAP) changing the design of
Child's death management. It was on Jully 2006 ...
http://www.dbmail.org/mantis/view.php?id=361

It leads to this interressing text that explains what you previously
told me about unsafe function ...
http://www.dwheeler.com/secure-programs/Secure-Programs-HOWTO/signals.html

Still I am persuaded that there are more than a few people to look for a
solution to this kind of issue, have you got any idea about how to help
people on this subject ?

Could you try the survfutex program ?

Bug#382591: lineakd doesn't recognise inputs when a dropdown menu is activated

2007-04-23 Thread Ryan Finnie

It seems all keyboard events are inhibited when a menu is open, even
GNOME's own keyboard shortcuts (try Alt-F1 while a menu's open, or
mapping a multimedia key within GNOME Keyboard Shortcuts). I'll
investigate further, but this is probably something lineakd cannot
change.

Bug#412449: xserver-xorg: Michel's patch works fine for me.

2007-04-23 Thread Takashi Matsuo

Package: xserver-xorg

I use Radeon Mobility M6 LY. I had encountered a similar situation.
I usually use two displays(dual head using MergedFB).

On xserver-xorg_1:7.1.0-18, xorg can not find valid mode for CRT2.
And Michel's patch works fine for me.

Bug#420647: confirmed small case

2007-04-23 Thread Jim Watson

Subject: openoffice.org: reduced case confirmed
Followup-For: Bug #420647
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 2.2.0-4

*** Please type your report below this line ***
I can reproduce this crash with a simple list
of one column and 14 rows (screenshot sent).

Apply autofilter and filter to show just 2 rows.
After deleting the visible rows all seems OK.

But after selecting the filter button and show "All"
again then the behaviour goes haywire.

All rows are displayed same as before the delete
but the deleted cell contents are "phantoms",
select the cell and the displayed content becomes blank.

Meanwhile the crash has started and soon it will close.
The file recovered by crashdump is interesting.
The rows have been deleted and moved up.
But each cell before a deleted row is copied into the next column.

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that will cause
your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a pointer
is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.

I have attached the diff to casper's 10adduser script which sets up the
live user account to make kdesu and su-to-root work. But these are
changes to the user account, not under /etc, as I suspect you need.

The su-to-root change won't work without the open bug against menu being
resolved. Bill included a new su-to-root script as an attachment to that
bug if you want to test his change so far.

Bug#420676: atop conflicts with 'acct', breaks 'sa' command.

2007-04-23 Thread Dominique Brazziel
Package: atop

Version: 1.16-2

The default 'acct' destination for accounting records
is
'/var/log/account/pacct', but atop thinks it is
/var/account/pacct or /var/log/pacct. This results in
accounting records being written to
'/tmp/atop.d/atop.acct' after atop is run at init
time.

When the 'sa' command from 'acct' is run, only the
processes up to the time 'atop' was started have been
recorded in '/var/log/account/pacct'. And since atop
stores it's logs in compressed format in atop.log, sa
cannot read them.

Bug#420675: git-core: Looks for /usr/etc/gitconfig, not /etc/gitconfig

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: git-core
Version: 1:1.5.1.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Git attempts to read system-wide configuration information from
/usr/etc/gitconfig, rather than /etc/gitconfig. This occurs because
ETC_GITCONFIG in the Makefile defaults to $(prefix)/etc/gitconfig , and
debian/rules sets prefix=/usr but does not set ETC_GITCONFIG. The attached
patch explicitly sets ETC_GITCONFIG=/etc/gitconfig.

Also, INSTALLDIRS=vendor no longer has any effect on the build system, and
neither "INSTALLDIRS" nor "vendor" appears anywhere other than debian/rules
and the RPM spec files. The attached patch removes INSTALLDIRS=vendor.

+Subject: [PATCH] Optimize directory listing with pathspec limiter.
+
+The way things are set up, you can now pass a "pathspec" to the
+"read_directory()" function. If you pass NULL, it acts exactly
+like it used to do (read everything). If you pass a non-NULL
+pointer, it will simplify it into a "these are the prefixes
+without any special characters", and stop any readdir() early if
+the path in question doesn't match any of the prefixes.
+
+NOTE! This does *not* obviate the need for the caller to do the *exact*
+pathspec match later. It's a first-level filter on "read_directory()", but
+it does not do the full pathspec thing. Maybe it should. But in the
+meantime, builtin-add.c really does need to do first
+
+   read_directory(dir, .., pathspec);
+ if (pathspec)

+ie the "prune_directory()" part will do the *exact* pathspec pruning,

Bug#420644: [pkg-horde] horde depends on libapache*-php*

suphp uses php*-cgi, then IMHO we should only take care of
php*-cgi for horde3. But this bug show that horde3 'Depends'
field is outdated! We should add unstable php*-cgi provides to
horde 'Depends' field :

[...] | phpapi-20050606+lfs | phpapi-20060613+lfs

And probably remove old phpapi-*

Hi Eric,

that does indeed look like a bit of a problem. Thanks for reporting it.
Hopefully it isn't too hard to track down and fix.

I'm CCing the linux-ha-dev list so their eyes pass over this problem.

ok, i've figured out a workaround:

1. bring up the weather window.

2. go to Sawfish Configurator (Desktop->Preferences->Windows menu),

3. select "Matched Windows" tab.

4. Add a matcher of type "Class". click "Grab" button,
then click on the weather window. it should enter
"^Gweather-applet-2/gweather-applet-2$"

5. Click on Appearance Tab of the Matcher dialog.

6. Click "Frame Type" checkbox, and select "Normal" from
   the popup menu.

7. click on OK.

This tells sawfish to make the gnome weather applet window a normal,
resizable window.

it would be better if the weather applet opened the window with the
right attributes in the first place.

Bug#420674: k3b: don't eject rewritable media after erasing it before burning

2007-04-23 Thread Evgeni Golov
Package: k3b
Version: 1.0.1-1
Severity: wishlist

I have a cd/dvd-burner which is not able to auto-load a medium (it's in
my laptop), so it is very annoying to push it back in each time I want
to burn a CD-RW, because it gets ejected automatically (even when I set
"don't eject medium after burn" on the options - this works after burn,
but not after rw-erase).
Is this eject really needed to recognize a "new" blank rw, or could it
be simply deactivated?

Bug#372655: Ditto for #372655 (viewcvs broken in Etch)

2007-04-23 Thread Kevin B. McCarty
Add me to the list of people affected by this bug. IMO either viewcvs
in Etch should be patched in stable to work appropriately, or it should
be removed from stable. Personally, I switched back to CVSWeb, which
interestingly enough works fine with the current version of CVS in Etch.

Bug#420241: quota: error while getting quota: Success

2007-04-23 Thread J.M.Roth
I have now installed linux-image-2.6.18-4-486 and it works.

I have also tried linux-image-2.6.20-1-486 from etch-backports, with
which it worked too.

Bug#420671: /usr/bin/git-add: Searches entire working copy for .gitignore files

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: git-core
Version: 1:1.5.1.1-1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/git-add

git-add searches every directory in the working copy for .gitignore files when
adding a file. It should not search for .gitignore files that could not
affect it. For instance, if I have a repository in ~, and do git-add
~/.bashrc, it should not search my entire home directory for .gitignore files;
it should only look at ~/.gitignore .

Why does KDE (kde-core kdebase khelpcenter) need them? Thank you in

Bug#400186: packages updated to ktorrent 2.1.1

Hi,

They are at (as usual for i386 and amd64):

deb http://alioth.debian.org/~modax-guest/ktorrent/ ./
deb-src http://alioth.debian.org/~modax-guest/ktorrent/ ./

Etch users (currently i386 only) will find backport of 2.1.4 at:

deb http://alioth.debian.org/~modax-guest/ktorrent-etch/ ./

I'll try to keep this backport updated. If you want an amd64 etch backport,
drop me an email.

Package: mirrors

Justification: renders package unusable

I contacted [EMAIL PROTECTED] about this issue, and received a reply
on Apr, 16 that the mirror script can't connect on the first try,

becomes broken.

He was going to play with some parameters while trying to fix the issue,
but the situation hasn't become better since that time.

This continues for several weeks already. So, some recently released Etch

Bug#420669: new upstream available? / move to main

2007-04-23 Thread Rene Engelhard
Package: openoffice.org-thesaurus-pl
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

According to http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=73618
there is a new upstream version available somewhere which thankfully
isn't OPL 2.0 anymore, but dual-licenses LGPL/OSL which makes it movable
main (taking the LGPL option)

Please investigate, package it if suitable and move to main.

Regards,

Rene

Bug#420412: throbber and gnome-settings-daemon

2007-04-23 Thread Joey Hess
I discovered that if I run gnome-settings-daemon, the missing throbber
appears.

However, epiphany does not start gnome-settings-daemon, so if epiphany
is used outside of gnome, it won't have a throbber by default.

Strange thing is that this problem didn't crop up until this week. I've
used epiphany outside gnome for a long time without seeing the problem
until now.

Heya,

this problem is related to the use of python-central. As I'm working on
the package to fix some lintian errors I'll switch from python-central
to python-support which should install the modules for all installed
python versions. The other way would be to wait until python-central
supports 2.5 officially, ans somehow I don;t want to do this, as I have
the same problem.

Cheers,

With all this tangled C++ source, it is extremely difficult for me to
make a test case. If somebody who is more familiar with the package
produces a simpler test case, I'm willing to look into it.

Bug#379696: ~/bin handled incorrectly in .bashrc and .bash_profile

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: bash
Version: 3.1dfsg-8
Followup-For: Bug #379696

I think the only correct solution here requires moving the check from
/etc/skel/.bash_profile to /etc/skel/.bashrc , and explicitly checking if the
directory already exists in $PATH before adding it.

Bug#409285: This prevents me from using lilo - can't install kernels!

2007-04-23 Thread Helge Hafting
Package: lilo
Version: 1:22.8-3
Followup-For: Bug #409285

Seems this bug is reported already.
The situation is hopeless.
I compiled a new kernel, updated lilo.conf, ran lilo, got:

Cannot proceed. Maybe you need to add this to your lilo.conf:
disk=/dev/sdg inaccessible
(real error shown below)
Fatal: open /dev/sdg: No medium found

Well, sdg is a card reader with nothing in it.
WHY THE HELL DO LILO TRY TO ACCESS IT ??? sdg wasn't
mentioned anywhere in /etc/lilo.conf, so OF COURSE lilo shouldn't try to
touch it at all. That is the real bug here. Don't try to access every
disk, just don't!

Now, lilo wants to touch every disk anyway, leading to secondary bugs.
If I add the suggested line to /etc/lilo.conf, then nothing happens.
The stupid lilo STILL tries to use sdg, even though I just tild
explicitly that it is "inaccessible". Urgh!

If I add "inaccessible" lines for my other card readers as well, I
get this shit instead:
Fatal: Duplicate "disk =" definition for /dev/sdh

Wrong message, there was no duplicate entry for sdh. Just one for sdg, and
one for sdh.

Parsing of "disk inaccessible" statements in lilo.conf is clearly broken,
but that isn't the real problem. The real problem is that
lilo wants such statements in the first place.

Suggestion: stop accessing ewvery disk - only disks actually mentioned
in /etc/lilo.conf. The "inaccessible" thing won't be needed then, so
it can be removed from the source instead of being "fixed" to work as
intended.

I wonder why lilo became like this. My guess: someone thought it was clever
to read *every* disk in order to do some kind of auto-detection. Probably in
order to save work for the user - right?

Well, that idea broke down as soon as the "inaccessible" keyword was needed
to keep card readers etc. out of this automatic stuff. Having to enumerate
every device that might not be there is a hopeless task. I got 4 right now,
what if I plug in my other USB multi-card reader as well ??? (Which is a
reasonable thing to do - I can then move files between two cards of the same
type directly)

Please - just ditch whatever program logic it is that needs to read every
accessible disk. lilo used to work fine before without this. I have
more "inaccessible" disks than accessible, so *not* having to enumerate the
iunaccessible ones is definitely a win. Even if I have to specify the
*accessible* disks more explicitly...

Bug#420666: /etc/skel/.bash_profile: Please handle ~/local/bin in addition to ~/bin

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: bash
Version: 3.1dfsg-8
Severity: wishlist
File: /etc/skel/.bash_profile

/etc/skel/.bash_profile currently adds ~/bin to the user's PATH if it exists.
Please consider doing the same for ~/local/bin . Some time ago, I read a
recommendation to instal software with the prefix ~/local , to avoid having
many top-level directories in my home directory (~/bin, ~/man, ~/share, ~/lib,
~/sbin). Since then, I have run into other people who do the same thing, and
I have seen other documentation making the same recommendation.

If you fix #420664, requesting automatic support for ~/lib, please support
~/local/lib as well.

Maybe uhci_hcd is not correctly loaded upon resume. Could you check that.

Hi,

this bug can be reproduced by installing libpam-devperm and adding the

Doing a strace -f on atd shows a segmentation fault. See strace log

Bug#420667: libc6 breaks bash, renders all compiles unusable

2007-04-23 Thread David Baron
Package: libc6
Version: 2.5-2
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

1. Upgrade -- balks at symlinks in /usr/lib, asks user to remove them. BAD
BAD BAD!
2. Once these removed, installs. Bash is now unusable--problem is in calls
from bashrc, bash.bashrc, et al. bash -norc, sh (not login) work.
3. The libc.so.6 synlink it kicked at is replaced. Reinstall will again
balk.
4. The other symlinks are needed by ld when building dependent programs!
5. Once replaced, builds procede but all built programs segfault.

Bug#420664: /etc/skel/.bash_profile: Include example for ~/lib

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: bash
Version: 3.1dfsg-8
Severity: wishlist
File: /etc/skel/.bash_profile

/etc/skel/.bash_profile currently contains code to add ~/bin to the user's
PATH if it exists. Please consider adding similar code for ~/lib and
LD_LIBRARY_PATH. It should look something like this:

if [ -d ~/lib ] ; then
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/lib${LD_LIBRARY_PATH:+:}"$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"
fi

Note that LD_LIBRARY_PATH may not exist already (and on a normal system, most
likely won't). We must avoid leaving a trailing colon, because an empty
component in LD_LIBRARY_PATH would cause the dynamic linker to look in the
current directory, a security risk. ${LD_LIBRARY_PATH:+:} provides a colon
only if LD_LIBRARY_PATH exists and has a non-empty value.

Bug#329331: Really???

2007-04-23 Thread Marc J. Driftmeyer
I think George is referring to LyX not converting the images, but
relying on external services your current system has or could have to
accomplish this task.

For instance, JPEG, PNG, GIF, PGM, etc has gimp-remote be its editor
and the system's current viewer associated with the extension handle its
preview mode.

EPS is managed by GhostView (GV).

no, it's not. it's a fixed-size, non-adjustable window.

if it was adjustable, i would have adjusted it myself rather than submit
a bug report.

maybe metacity ignores the instruction to be a dialog window, but
sawfish doesn't (i use sawfish with afterstep theme. partly because
i'm used to it and the buttons are where i expect them to be, and
partly because you can middle-click in the maximise button to get a
vertical-only maximise...which metacity can't/doesn't do)

I think libkabc (which handles the addressbook directly) uses either fam or
gamin to watch for changed files. When either kaddressbook or kmail changes
something, it uses libkabc and I think libkabc calls back to the other
program to tell that it should reread the file.

Do you use libfam or libgamin on yoru system? Have you configured it to work
across nfs? from some quick googling there might be some configuratins needed
in order to have gamin and/or fam to work with nfs shares.

I actually don't think so. I have really tried to be evil to kaddressbook and
kmail and the addressbooks without any success.

> (It would be preferable if they could fix bugs properly instead of
> disabling functionality.)
To fix it in kde3.5 it requires a major libkabc rewrite - that will not be
done for kde3.5 - but in kde4 it is a part of akonadi which should fix this.

I'm not sure it's that simple. In the NFS case, the contacts are not in a
remote resource from KDE:s point of view, since they appear in a mounted
directory in the file system.

It's very likely that the problem can be reproduced with other types of file
systems.

(It would be preferable if they could fix bugs properly instead of disabling
functionality.)

This problem is present upstream in XML::SAX 0.15 too. As the FTBFS
problem in docbook2x (#409524) has since been worked around, I'm not
sure if this should be RC anymore. It's a clear regression from 0.12 in
Etch, though.

I have reported the bug with a proposed patch as CPAN #26588,

Bug#420661: /etc/skel/.bashrc: Includes redundant dir and vdir aliases (superseded by coreutils)

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: bash
Version: 3.1dfsg-8
Severity: minor
File: /etc/skel/.bashrc

/etc/skel/.bashrc contains these lines:

# enable color support of ls and also add handy aliases
if [ "$TERM" != "dumb" ]; then
eval "`dircolors -b`"
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
#alias dir='ls --color=auto --format=vertical'
#alias vdir='ls --color=auto --format=long'
fi

However, coreutils now includes /bin/dir and /bin/vdir as real commands,
equivalent to ls --format=vertical and ls --format=long, respectively. Thus,
please either remove the commented-out aliases entirely, or replace them with:
#alias dir='dir --color=auto'
#alias vdir='vdir --color=auto'

Based on this, I'm reopening this bug and reassigning it to
Mail::MboxParser. Note that the Mail::Mbox::MessageParser in debian does
not currently trigger this hang, but until the hang is fixed, I can't
upgrade to the new version of the package, so please apply the patch.

(If it doesn't get applied eventually, I might have to package the new
upstream version anyway, at which point this bug would become release
critical again..)

Bug#420659: /etc/skel/.bashrc: Include commented-out example for grep coloring

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: bash
Version: 3.1dfsg-8
Severity: wishlist
File: /etc/skel/.bashrc

With the appropriate options set, grep can colorize matches when outputting to
a terminal. Please include the following commented-out example in
/etc/skel/.bashrc that the user can uncomment to enable grep coloring:

# Uncomment this to enable color in grep
#export GREP_OPTIONS='--color=auto'
#export GREP_COLOR='1;32'

Some people find this annoying, so it should remain disabled by default.
Giving an example seems useful, though.

Bug#278479: reopening

2007-04-23 Thread dann frazier
reopen 278479
thanks

hey,
I don't see how the FHS can be interpreted in this way, and the link
to the sourceforge mail archive is broken, so I'm reopening this bug.

The first section of Chapter 4. "The /usr Hierarchy" in the FHS says:

"/usr is the second major section of the filesystem. /usr is
shareable, read-only data. That means that /usr should be shareable
between various FHS-compliant hosts and must not be written to. Any
information that is host-specific or varies with time is stored
 elsewhere."

pciids dbase is certainly something that varies with time, so it must
not be written in /usr, but should be stored elsewhere. I also know of
no counterexample to this inside Debian.

The local administrator isn't even granted permission under the FHS to
make changes under /usr, as far as I can tell, with the exclusion of
the /usr/local hierarchy.

Bug#281246: Debian-live needs this

d-i needs to deal with this too, as it can install a system with only
sudo root access. It currently handes the gksu case as follows[1]. Could
you show me what needs to be done for the kdesu and su-to-root cases?

update-alternatives --set libgksu-gconf-defaults \
/usr/share/libgksu/debian/gconf-defaults.libgksu-sudo
update-gconf-defaults

--
see shy jo

[1] There are several other ways to do it but this is probably the best
way as it does not involve modifying conffiles or placing
non-package managed files in /usr.

Bug#420656: /etc/skel/.bashrc: Use PS1 for xterm title setting, not PROMPT_COMMAND

2007-04-23 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: bash
Version: 3.1dfsg-8
Severity: wishlist
File: /etc/skel/.bashrc

The default /etc/skel/.bashrc contains this:

# If this is an xterm set the title to [EMAIL PROTECTED]:dir
case "$TERM" in
xterm*|rxvt*)
PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ${PWD/$HOME/~}\007"'
;;
*)
;;
esac

This need not use PROMPT_COMMAND. In my ~/.bashrc, I changed it to the
following, which works perfectly:

# If this is an xterm or rxvt set the title to [EMAIL PROTECTED]:dir
case "$TERM" in
xterm*|rxvt*)
PS1="\[\e]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: \w\a\]$PS1"
;;
*)
;;
esac

This achieves exactly the same effect, but uses the built-in prompt and the
built-in escape sequences. This removes the need to run the internal echo
command, simplifies the logic, makes it easier for users to use PROMPT_COMMAND
for their own purposes, and allows the use of more of the standard prompt
escapes if the user wants them.

This would also address other bug reports on the bash package, such as
#382738.
