Bug#693577: libfso-glib: not properly built from source (actual source is in fso-specs)
On 13/01/13 00:25, Paul Wise wrote: On Sat, 2013-01-12 at 21:44 +, Simon McVittie wrote: This sounds very familiar. I considered this approach for Telepathy, but rejected it because of problems like this. BTW, Debian strongly discourages embedded code copies: https://wiki.debian.org/EmbeddedCodeCopies I know, but D-Bus interface XML is pretty far from being code - the closest equivalent that you'd call code would be C headers that don't have any inline functions or macros. It can't have bugs other than design flaws and feature requests, and the closest it can get to a security bug is implementations of this method that obey its documentation can't be secure (which would still be a bug in the implementation, IMO). Personally, I think the solution is to merge the specs into the library source package and drop the specs source package. If there's only one library, this is functionally equivalent; in Debian, telepathy-spec is only provided as documentation. Unless the specs are used in multiple source packages, then the solution is the one used by libshr-glib (use Built-Using and don't ship pre-generated files). Not shipping pre-generated files, sure. Telepathy doesn't do that either; we do the code-generation at build-time. I still think importing D-Bus interfaces from another source package, if they affect your ABI, is actively harmful: it makes the ABI of the current source package depend on an external factor. To make the ABI predictable you'd need a (= something) dependency, at which point you'd have to do sourceful uploads of every affected package in lockstep. Bug#698112: asterisk: Segfault when making a call after update to 1.6.2.9-2+squeeze9
Dear Mr. Cohen, after the update to squeeze9, the asterisk process restarts fine. When someone does a SIP call, the asterisk process immediately terminates with the described segmentation fault (according to dmesg). As the software is running on our production server infrastructure, I have performed a downgrade to squeeze8 again to ensure proper operation during our office hours. That's also the reason why I won't be able to upgrade again and debug the system now because I have to keep the telephony operational during office hours. Maybe I can reproduce it with a test system, I'll keep you informed. Both patches seem appropriate for upstream submission. Did you do that already? Can you document the submission status in those headers? debian/rules: You pass the /usr prefix via $(DESTDIR). This is not wrong, but uncommon. Maybe you could extend the patch that adds DESTDIR to also add PREFIX? That would be useful for other distributions as well. Bug#698019: libav: the effective GPL-licensed status of the binary packages should be clearly documented
Quoting Charles Plessy (2013-01-14 02:55:38) On Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 11:43 PM, Francesco Poli (wintermute) I think that the effective licensing status of the binary packages (GPL-2+ or GPL-3+) should be explicitly and clearly documented in the comment at the beginning of the debian/copyright file and, probably, in the binary package long descriptions, as well. Le Sun, Jan 13, 2013 at 09:50:58AM +0100, Reinhard Tartler a écrit : I am not happy at all with cluttering the binary package description with license blabla. I would do so only as last resort Dear Reinhard, Francesco and everybody, I think that the Debian copyright file of libav 6:9.1-1 is clear enough with its comment in the header, and that it is best to keep the license information out of the description of the package. Newest progress(?) on this is commit e3731d with this commit message: Document all licensing of binary packages in README.Debian (not partly as comment in copyright file), to avoid confusing source That change has not yet released but sits in our VCS. Could you please comment on that? Sorry, I can't figure out how to reference it at our public anoncms URL, but it is commit e3731d at git.debian.org:/git/pkg-multimedia/libav . Note that the machine-readable format also allows License fields in the header paragraph to give the license information for the package as a whole. I am aware of that. But I am not convinced that *any* of the licensing formally covered by the copyright file format 1.0 are about the licensing of _binary_ packages. It is my understanding that they all are about sources only, not effective reasoned licenses. I've CCed Colin, the pcmciautils maintainer, for his input. pcmciautils is a slightly misleading name, as it does some CardBus handling as well. Bug#693114: dovecot-core: Mailboxes inaccessible after upgrade
Another user bitten by this chiming in. I just upgraded my Wheezy installation, which upgraded both dovecot-core and dovecot-imapd from 1:2.1.7-2 to 1:2.1.7-6, and after the upgrade I could also no longer access my mailboxes. The change Jerry Quinn mentioned fixed it for me again, but Wheezy has been frozen for quite a while now. I didn't expect a (supposed) bugfix upgrade of Dovecot to completely break mail access on my system. Thankfully I know to check for already existing Debian bugs for the package, but if I had been a slightly more ordinary user, I would have been stuck with a broken mail system and no idea how to fix it. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Quoting Francesco Poli (2013-01-13 12:41:38) On Sun, 13 Jan 2013 08:25:29 +0100 Reinhard Tartler wrote: Especially as Jonas (and others) keep telling me that debian/copyright is only about the source package. They are indeed right, generally speaking. But when the effective license of binary package(s) is more restrictive than it would seem to be by just looking at the debian/copyright file, I think that a big warning should be put in a prominent place in order to point out the situation. What better place than the debian/copyright file to warn users about some surprising licensing of binary packages? I agree that debian/copyright is the best place to cover effective licensing, but I disagree that we whould do it before it is defined as the purpose of that file to cover *both* source and effective licensing. Debian copyright file format 1.0 do not introduce new meaning or requirements to the copyright file, only new structure! Suppose I am the maintainer of another Debian package and I have to assess whether it is legally possible to distribute that package linked with some libav libraries. The first things to check would be the libav library binary package descriptions and the libav debian/copyright file. Most people would stop there, without studying the libav build process in detail and without recursively checking the debian/copyright files and build processes of all the direct and indirect dependencies of the libav libraries! Stopping there is flawed, *because* looking at those places is not enough to describe effective licensing! One needs to examine the combined licensing of all parts of the chain - which is a huge job, I agree. First step in imporving that job is to make _source_ licensing machine readable *without* changing anything else, and a later step is to hopefully make a tool that traverses all build-dependencies to warn about potential incompatibilities. I'm not a big fan of adding licence terms to the binary package description. I can understand, but in some surprising cases it maybe makes sense. Especially when multiple binary packages built from the same source package end up having different effective licenses... I find it false security to try document such elevations in copylefting of licensing, because it not only is tied to the current package and build flags there, but the whole chain of packages involved in the build process. Also, it still does not belong in the package description. I would be quite happy to extend debian/copyright to also cover effective licensing, but that should be a Debian-wide change of policy, because doing it only when noticed could quite easily be misinterpreted as having done it only when needed which is a quite different thing. I don't believe it's absolutely necessary to build from sources during the package build, and indeed none of the other free firmware images are rebuilt. Regards, JKB Hi, sorry, I didn't explain right. uswsusp should be used with ANY kernel version, but, I had some problems with some kernel versions. Perhaps some new kernels have some issues with the suspend process. For this reason, if you can check different kernel versions with different uswsusp versions, we can test if the problem is in the uswsusp package or in the linux-image package. Just a remark. The same kernel with the same uswsusp run fine on my Toshiba P200. Regards, JKB Hi, yes, it is normal. Before version 1.0 (included), uswsusp uses KMS (Kernel Mode Set) if the kernel supports it. Using KMS, each device has included the info to suspend, and this info is not included in the uswsusp database. We have 3 options: 1. Your computer is in the database 2. Your computer is not in the database, KMS is included, KMS in the kernel module is ok. 3. Your computer is not in the database, KMS is included, KMS in the kernel module is not ok. The problem could be if your computer is in the database now, but not before, or if now you are using KMS and the kernel is right for your device. Please, in your Lenovo TP, try the same kernel with the previous uswsusp version package and the current uswsusp package with the new kernel version (the 4 options): old kernel + old uswsusp = OK old kernel + new uswsusp = ? new kernel + old uswsusp = ? new kernel + new uswsusp = FAIL And check if your computer is in the database. Package: bash Version: 4.1-3 Severity: minor File: /etc/skel/.bashrc /etc/skel/.bashrc still usees the depreceted programs 'egrep' and 'fgrep'. Although these lines are commented our by default, the alias value should be changed to 'grep -E' and 'grep -F', respectively: #alias fgrep='grep -F --color=auto' #alias egrep='grep -E --color=auto' 'grep --help' says: `egrep' means `grep -E'. `fgrep' means `grep -F'. Did you check that *none* of the other files distributed by TeX Live in the texlive-fonts-extra package require any of the font packages that it depends on? It is already a service to the users that we package and split TeX LIve into smaller collections. I could have gone forth and just package *ONE* package texlive which ships all the 2Gb ... So please understand, that for implementing this there are a lot of checks to be done, and instead of writing angry emails one could help instead. Hi Norbert, it seems that my mail sounded a lot more angry than it was meant to. Actually, it wasn't meant to sound angry at all. I just wanted to get some feedback for my complaint, like Yes, we are considering this or No, this won't happen, because I did not mean to offend anyone and feel sorry I did so. Now, replying to your paragraphs: Could you please recognize that packaging TeX Live is not as easy as task as you might imagine. Yes, I know that this is a complicated matter from my own short experiments with tex-gyre, lmodern and some other packages. Did you check that *none* of the other files distributed by TeX Live in the texlive-fonts-extra package require any of the font packages that it depends on? No, and I am even sure that some other files in texlive-fonts-extra *do* require some of the fonts that it depends on. But I think that it can be expected from users --if they want to use a font from texlive-fonts-extra in TeX-- to make sure to install that actual font package as well. Furthermore, recommended packages will be installed alongside t-f-e by default; the main difference being that it's allowed to remove them without having to remove t-f-e as well. It is already a service to the users that we package and split TeX LIve into smaller collections. I could have gone forth and just package *ONE* package texlive which ships all the 2Gb ... I know that the current packaging is a great service and I appreciate it. It is just that I currently work on a LaTeX document on three different systems and had to install the huge t-f-e package on all three just because I decided to use one font that happened to be in there. And I have not yet received any constructive feedback to my complaint, that's why I wrote this other mail... (Given that porting to the new GOffice also seems to require porting to GTK+ 3, I'm a little surprised that GOffice 0.10 was packaged as a new version of the same source package, but anyway ...) Note that, although it's possible to build cutter-testing-framework after changing the build-dependency from libgoffice-0.8-dev to libgoffice-0.10-dev, this simply causes it to build without GOffice support, and it isn't obvious that that's desirable. Even the current upstream of cutter doesn't seem to have 0.10 support, and the current package is well behind upstream and apparently maintained by NMUs. It has no reverse-dependencies in unstable. With your patch applied to the version in unstable, dpkg-buildpackage would hang (on arch amd64). IMO this is due to a minor error in your patch.
