See http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/index, especially: RFP If you are going to package this, retitle the bug report to replace "RFP" with "ITP", in order for other people to know the program is already being packaged, and set yourself as the owner of the bug. What did you actually did in which order and which java packages > are installed? Did you installed tomcat5.5 from scratch or did you > updated it? It was an update, but I just tried on another computer with a clean install, I have the same problem. Can you check the content of MANIFEST.MF in /usr/share/tomcat5.5/bin/bootstrap.jar, especially: Class-Path: jmx.jar commons-daemon.jar commons-logging-api-1.1.1.jar t omcat-juli.jar I don't have any commons-logging-api-1.1.1.jar in /usr/share/tomcat5.5/bin/, but a commons-logging-api.jar which is a symlink to /usr/share/java/commons-logging-api.jar. I guess one of the reason you can't reproduce the bug might be because you have a /usr/share/tomcat5.5/bin/commons-logging-api-1.1.1.jar which does not belong to any package. Note that MANIFEST.MF of tomcat 5.5.25 does contain the right Class-Path. Hope that helps. Cheers, -- Thomas Huriaux -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The i18n support in all debconf-using packages being a release goal for Lenny (http://release.debian.org/lenny-goals.txt), I'm raising the severity to important. In the case of pine, there are 3 different ways to fix the package, depending on what comes first: * Lenny is released: the switch must be done long enough before to give time to translators to translate the package. * A mta-base package is created: pine-tracker/note must be switched to po-debconf (or moved to a News.Debian file, as it is really close to a debconf abuse). The two other templates will then be removed. * alpine replaces pine: this bug will be closed together with other pine's bugs. These file should replace those in the root directory of your package. That would be great to have these translations in Etch. I will follow up (hopefully tomorrow) in #260526 with a full patch fixing the po4a infrastructure of your package. The current one is broken and therefore cannot be used neither by you nor by translators. As this requires major changes, this should of course be done post-Etch. There are similar lists for other languages, the easiest way is to send a call for translations on [EMAIL PROTECTED] > I'm a poor writer, and my software itself would also need to be checked, > as it's fully translatable. Any help for the *strings.php files of the > APP itself would be as well very appreciated. You should probably rework your internationalisation infrastructure using appropriate tools (gettext, po4a, ...). Having all translations within a single file is really not convenient for translators, and will soon become a nightmare for you if you have to manage string updates. Bug#402657: tagging bugs that are closed by packages in NEW as pending
Hi, Anibal Monsalve Salazar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (01/03/2007): > # the following bugs are closed by packages in NEW > tags 402655 pending Seeing this bug marked as pending and having seen nothing neither on debian-i18n nor on debian-l10n-french, I checked out the cvs version of dtc just to see how you handled this bug and #402657. * the first sentence of the extended description of the first template in dtc.templates is: Enter the hostname or ip do you want to use to connect to your MySQL server. this sentence does not mean anything, I stopped reading further. * the first string translated in the debian/po/fr.po is msgid "MySQL hostname:" msgstr "Nom de l'hôte MySQL :" there is a missing unbreakable space. OK, this string is marked as fuzzy, so I jumped to the first really translated string: msgid "DTC database name:" msgstr "Nom de la base de donnée DTC :" there is also a missing unbreakable space, as well as a missing "s" to "donnée". I stopped reading further. So, before uploading any new package, please follow the following steps: * ask for review on debian-l10n-english of all your templates. * once your templates are written in correct english, ask for translations on debian-i18n (you can use for example the podebconf-report-po tool). * if you do yourself some translations (especially the French one), do coordinate with Debian localization teams. They usually use well-defined consistency rules. The easiest way is even to ask the team to do the translation for you. * once you have waited a long-enough time for updated translations, you can then upload a new package. Releasing templates in such a bad state is very problematic, as some other translation teams will start to work on templates of a very poor quality. That means they will just lose their time, but that's what happens when doing uncoordinated uploads. Cheers, -- Thomas Huriaux signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Here is what I do: - fetch the source package with apt-get source - run debconf-updatepo to be sure to work on an up-to-date templates.pot - copy templates.pot into fr.po - translate fr.po - run debconf-updatepo to be sure that I haven't modified accidentaly a msgid - send the fr.po for proofreading on debian-l10n-french (this process is around one week) - apply the patches received - once this process is finished, I check if there has been new versions of the package during the proofread process, if so, I download the new source package and run debconf-updatepo to see if the file is still up-to-date. I usually even do it without checking if there has been new versions. - send the file to the BTS So, as I run 3 times debconf-updatepo in a normal translation process, I'd like to not have to understand the build system of every package I translate :-) > >> course, it is not as problematic as I thought before. > >> The other minor problem is that it gives false-positives in our i18n > >> infrastructure :-) > >> (see http://www.debian.org/intl/l10n/po-debconf/errors-by-pkg) > > I think you should follow lintian example and allow maintainers to > override the result of your checks if needed. Bug#194712: oops: no useful description of the format option

On the other hand, it > is better, cause then the decision can be remembered. I strongly agree, the description of the oops/format is currently meaningless: * it should only be displayed if there are existing storage files. * I don't know about compatibility, but if the statement of Bernd is correct, it should only be displayed if formats are not compatible. * the extended description should then be rephrased to tell the user that existing storage files have been found on the system and that reformatting them will erase previous data. It should be introduced by explaining what are these storage files used for (i.e. what kind of data the user may not want to loose). Furthermore, in your postinst script, you echo: "storage file generated." Your debconf description should be consistent with this echo: * "storages files" (short description) is a typo. * "storage files" (long description): is there one or more storage file? For example, I would rephrase as following: _Description: Format oops storage file? Oops uses the file /var/spool/oops/storages/oops_storage to store the data used as... . Such a file already exists on your system and need to be reformatted in order for oops to work correctly. Reformatting this file will erase all the previous data stored in it. If you do not want to loose these data, you should not choose this option, backup this file, and regenerate it by running as root: . /usr/sbin/oops -z -c /etc/oops/oops.cfg Cheers, -- Thomas Huriaux signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Package: cipe-common Version: 1.5.4free-11 Severity: normal User: debian-i18n@lists.debian.org Usertags: useless-debconf-notes Hi, While installing your package, the installation stops with a (critical) debconf note saying: If you are upgrading from an old (<= 1.3.0) version of CIPE... You should use dpkg --compare-versions to avoid displaying this note if the user is not upgrading from one of these problematic versions. Moreover, as far as I can see, there has never been a 1.3 version in Debian (or this was previous to woody). This note can therefore simply be removed. No, it would give me one more reason to ask you to remove this pointless note :-) > If no and I have to remove the question, what is the standard way to > direct the users to the doc (as it's rather important)? README.Debian files, package description, NEWS.Debian, manpages, configuration manuals, etc. > Would a simple echo would be enough? No, it has nothing to do there. Bug#402972: grub2: Please switch to gettext-based debconf templates
Package: grub2 Version: 1.95-2 Severity: minor Tags: l10n Hi, Please use gettext-based debconf templates to allow translations, as recommended by the developers-reference (section 6.5.2.2). See po-debconf(7). There is also a lintian warning: W: grub2 source: not-using-po-debconf If you need additional help to do this switch, do not hesitate to ask me or to ask on debian-i18n. I was trying to build the qmail-src package from the Debian qmail source package, not the "real" qmail package from the qmail-src package. I don't understand why an automated debianization requires existing users to succeed. Or I may not have understood the purpose of the qmail-src package. Note also that if it is a known issue that you don't want to fix, you should mark the bug as wontfix instead of closing the bugs. I never parse closed bugs before reporting a current issue (and I don't believe being the only one acting like that). This will avoid this popping up now and again.
