Full diff against python-gnupg-0.3.0 attached Thanks for the additional information, I think we now have everything needed to make a well-informed decision! I'm absolutely not sure what is the best thing to do now: 1. unblock the embedded python-gnupg copy to the current copy of Wheezy's python-gnupg + small change that supposedly improves things: take the risk to see a regression in gajim due to changes brought by the library update; Have you seen the diff? I don't see what security issue it could cause. But without it, Gajim can traceback, that is a fact. 2. revert the embedded python-gnupg copy update: take the risk to make it harder to support serious bugs or security issues that may be found in python-gnupg in the future. I'm slightly lending towards #1, but not too satisfied with it, so I'll let the Release Team make their own opinion on this matter (not that I could do differently, anyway :) Note that, even if this unblock is granted, gajim remains RC-buggy in Wheezy and unstable due to the #693048 security issue. As all other Gajim versions. Bug is fixed upstream, but not enough tested to be included for the moment. So do what you want, remove Gajim from Debian because of this security issue if you want. I haven't: it's quite big, and most big changes have some potential for regression during freeze time. I'm not saying the probability is high, I'm just stating that a risk does exist, so that the release team can take it into account when they make a decision. I'm talking about gnupg diff that I attached in my previous mail. it's a 5 line diff or something like that. But without it, Gajim can traceback, that is a fact. I'm sorry I missed this important piece of information. Where was I supposed to learn about it? (Not a rhetorical question, I've genuinely searched, and failed to find it in the unblock request -related set of messages. I guess it might be #670243 that is related to GnuPG support, but it's unclear to me if that one was fixed by the modifications made to the embedded pythong-gnupg copy, or by the upgrade thereof.) I would not have modified it if that didn't fix a bug in the library. It does not handle all messages that GPG can raise. So I added some that Gajim users already encoutered. See https://trac.gajim.org/ticket/7151 I'm sorry about that. Please note the fix to this specific bug was ACK'd by a Release Team member mid-October, so it could have been pretty smoothly fixed in Wheezy, had it not been bundled with a bunch of other changes that were less easy to decide upon, by requiring additional information or other changes from your side. I'm sorry the Release Team is overwhelmed with unblock requests, so their delays in replying to this bug report were quite long sometimes: every back'n'forth round-trip then takes time, so the best way to ensure such an unblock request is treated quickly is to only include changes that are evidently freeze-compliant, and document them very well at unblock request time, when this not done in debian/changelog yet. I hope it may help next time! :) Cheers, I don't blame release team nor anyone else. I know they do their best. I don't understand if you ask me to fix only bugs reported in Gajim or all known bugs in Gajim. I did the second by making this 0.15.1 package, thinking it was the better way to do. It's a minor release, so only a bugfix release. I also asked release team if that was a good idea BEFORE doing the package and got a positive reply. I don't think there will be a next time. After this package will be accepted, I'll find another maintainer. Great! However, given this next release is highly unlikely to be in Wheezy, it looks like Wheezy will ship with a Gajim that *has* a python-gnupg embedded code copy -- and perhaps Squeeze has too? Regardless of the future (much welcome!) upstream fixes, information about the existing code duplication needs to be put on the dedicated list, so that the security team can react appropriately in case a security issue is discovered in the duplicated library. Jonathan Wiltshire wrote: tag 569767 +patch thanks The attached patch is taken roughly from upstream's fix, but fits the current unstable package. It would do in the interim until a new upstream release is made (seeing it applied before then would be great, since I think this will get many people). I've tested it without any side-effects so far. Florian wrote: Package: gajim Version: 0.13.1-1 Severity: minor Gajim now uses different colors for incoming and outgoing messages--while this is a nice feature, only the color for incoming messages seems to be determined by the Gnome color theme, and the outgoing messages are hard to read on dark themes. I think the color is changeable in the advanced configuration editor, but this is not user-friendly. I think the color used for outgoing messages should also depend on the used theme. thanks, Florian In preferences window, style tab, you can configure this color. Goto Edit - Accounts to bring up the accounts dialog 2. Select the account, click the Connection tab 3. Tick the 'Use custom hostname/port' checkbox 4. Edit the hostname, but left the existing port value alone (the default value is 5222, which was correct) 5. Click close After still not being able to connect to the jabber service, we resorted to carrying out a packet capture, and found that gajim was trying to connect to port 0 on the server. Changing the port value to 5223 caused it to try and connect to port 5223 as expected. Changing the port value back to 5222 caused it to try and connect to port 5222. It would seem that the default values in the hostname and port input boxes in the accounts dialog don't have any effect until they are changed. Well, yes, I understand that. What I mean is that I now don't think the sound is the real reason for gajim to hang. It's probably only the symptom of the problem. What happens is that Gajim, the whole application, freezes and I have to kill the process and restart it. This happens as I can remember when I close a chat window. So I noticed that aplay was still there (as a zombie) and thought it was the sound that made Gajim hang. Now, since the same problem happens with artsplay, I'm not so sure anymore, stracing it shows that Gajim just sits there waiting for input with all it's windows completely frozen, they don't even repaint when they have been hidden below another application. The future is randr 1.2 stuff, which panel supports more or less correctly (especially with static config). It *doesnt* support twinview because nobody really know what is twinview. And yes, xfce4-panel (and xfwm4) changed between 4.4 and 4.6, especially to support randr 1.2. So yes, there might be a bug, but unless the developer can reproduce it it'll be very hard to fix. You may not have time to find how to configure randr 1.2, but don't expect other people to have time to fix proprietary bugs either, especially without any kind of information. That said, if you have a dual-output card it should be fairly easy to use RandR 1.2 (and there are plenty of documentation on the net). You don't have to retune all your config, just disabling all that twinview stuff, switch to vesa driver (or maybe remove xorg.conf completely and let xorg chose the best driver, like nv or vesa), add a Virtual line so there is enough memory allocated, and when in Xfce, use xrandr to configure the dual screen output. Using openssl s_client I can connect to my jabber server on port 5223 and have it verify it, and it works (if I pass -CAfile to openssl s_client). It seems that gajim (or python-openssl, or openssl, I don't really know) doesn't use my CA file, and thus doesn't see that this “self signed certificate” is my trusted CA. Could you test a daily snapshot from ftp.gajim.org/debian? I don't have suspend on my machine, so I cannot test for suspend. Indeed, it seems to work in SVN. However, I now get a Resource conflict telling me I'm already connected. That might be because I'm suspending by calling pm-suspend directly, so gajim might not get a chance to close the connection first. I think you should use gajim-remote to disconnect correctly before going to suspend in a before-suspend script. But messages sent while I'm suspended are no longer lost. Could you backport the fix to lenny? hmmm no. There are really too much things that changed since 0.11.4 (1.5 years of developpement).
