Almost every new version requires a new package, with NEW processing by ftp-masters etc. That doesn't seem ideal to me. So I suspect it's better if the binary package was just called libgeda, and that the program packages depended on a specific version. However it needs to be the exact upstream version without being a particular debian revision. With that approach, it's impossible to install several different versions. Or several programs that each depend on a different version of libgeda. True. But that's OK because all of the geda-* program packages that use the library are updated at the same time as the library, and I maintain all of those packages. Upstream releases them all as a set. They could be one tarball; originally they were. Hamish -- Hamish Moffatt VK3SB [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I don't know. That was the impression I got from the OP's rantings. It seemed that the old package worked without the -utils, but the new package didn't. As long as that is true, free hardware is not possible on the same scale as free software or with many of its benefits. Those costs exist mainly, IMHO, because the general public doesn't have wide spread manufacturing like Linux developers do with regard to software development. Personally I'm not buying it. Hardware costs what it does for the same reasons as software -- to advance the state of the art and to create better hardware (or software as the case may be.) What are you talking about? ASICs (custom ICs) are costly to design and manufacture because it's labour-intensive and requires expensive tools and expensive machines. Those machines themselves were labour-intensive to design and build and use expensive parts. etc. If you know a way to create transistors that are only 90 nanometers wide, or even 250nm, in your room at home, please share. (That's 90 billionths of a metre.) I don't think this is just a case of not thinking out of the box. That's the manufacturing. The design is a process of coding and testing, which you could do yourself for free. (Of course there's no suitable free tools yet either.) Unlike software, you have to get it right quickly because the next revision of prototypes incurs all the same costs again. Hamish -- Hamish Moffatt VK3SB [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The rest, as you say, is for the manufacturer and the user to work out, but we disvalue non-free software, and so we don't distribute it in main. (And packages which require it go into contrib.) You only see it as inconsistent because you think the relevant consideration is do we support this hardware, and you don't care how we support it. Most of us *do* care; we support it provided we can do so without distributing non-free software, because Debian is 100% Free Software. Things we cannot support with free software we do not support. This is not an inconsistent policy; this is the core of what Debian stands for. It's software either way. The difference is in how the manufacturer ships it to you. Why should that make a difference to Debian? To say it is arbitrary is worse, because that insults the motives of the people who disagree with you. There's a time and a place for that I think. Maybe, maybe not. A lot of the processors come with it on board whether you want it or not, many of the ones that don't have an expensive (in pin-count) external memory bus. If it's in the chip it costs money. If there's a non-FLASH variant available, designers will use it because it's cheaper. And whether it's in the micro or external, it costs money. If it's external it takes space too. In addition to the FLASH part, you might need some other logic (eg a CPLD) to actually transfer the contents of FLASH into the programmable device. That costs a few more dollars and takes a bit more board space. The front-end chips used in DVB (digital television) cards have their firmware loaded through I2C and I don't think they have any way to initiate that themselves. Hence if you wanted a wholly hardware solution you would need a CPLD to act as the I2C master. Instead the software drivers program these chips just fine during initialisation. Further, if you want to support firmware upgrades, you need to find a VERY robust process else you have huge technical support and repair issues, not to mentioned unhappy customers. In general the FLASH is being loaded via JTAG, and the RAM is being loaded via JTAG. No difference. You can write a device with completely wedged software via JTAG. FLASH is loaded in the factory by JTAG. RAM isn't; I'm not sure what you mean there. I'm an EE working on industrial telecommunications equipment and I always argue for putting as little as possible in FLASH, so that we can upgrade it easily later. Are you sure you don't mean ROM? In general, FLASH systems are designed to upgrade in place. Sure, but you need to develop an upgrade process that means the device still works if you lose power or unplug it during the FLASH process. It'll generate tech support calls, without a doubt. So if you can avoid it, you would (and should). The FLASH technology makes partial reprogramming easy, but you still have to use it sensibly. Yes, which I would like to answer myself: I am now in favour of msmtp simply because it provides for cryptography. In the long run, I would rather like to see ssmtp and nullmailer removed in favour of msmtp, because in the long run, unencrypted SMTP should not be supported. ssmtp seems to support SSL/TLS connections also. The package depends on libssl and a quick glance at the source shows that support is there. Looks like my description of nullmailer above was wrong. I read its description relay-only to mean that it only does relaying, ie it's an SMTP proxy of some kind. However it seems to be yet another /usr/sbin/sendmail. However it sounds like msmtp doesn't provide /usr/sbin/sendmail, so it cannot provide: mail-transport-agent, nor replace ssmtp etc. Hamish -- Hamish Moffatt VK3SB [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
