FROM RETIREE TO EMPLOYEE
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Does a silver ceiling exist? An increasing amount of retirees are deciding to
return to work. While some need to work out of necessity, others simply miss
the social interaction and satisfaction their careers brought them.
Whether the choice to return to work is made out of necessity or to cure
boredom, it's important to brush up on both your job search and interview
skills. It is also advantageous to seek out those employers who will respect
the skills and qualities that your maturity brings. After all, mature workers
have the job skills that enable them to directly compete with younger people.
As you embark on your search for the ideal opportunity, take the following
questions into account ...

THE HISTORY OF VICTORIA DAY
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Born on May 24, 1819, Queen Victoria is our youngest reigning monarch taking
the throne at just 18 years old after the death of William IV. Her birthday was
first declared a holiday in 1845 and a national holiday in 1901 following her
death.

The only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent and Princess Victoria of
Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert, in
1840. Because she was Queen, Victoria actually had to propose to Albert. They
had nine children before Prince Albert died of typhoid fever in 1861. After his
passing, Queen Victoria withdrew from the public and went into a long period of
mourning. Aside from celebrating her 60-year reign, she spent the rest of her
life wearing black.
For many Canadians, Victoria Day unofficially marks the beginning of summer.
While technically intended to be celebrated on May 24th each year, an amendment

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Eating properly can become an issue for seniors, particularly those who find
themselves living alone. While caloric needs decline, a balanced diet is still
necessary to decrease the chance of obesity, cancer, cataracts, osteoporosis,
stroke, heart disease or joint disorders.

A diet rich in complex carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids, nutrients, such as
fiber and calcium, as well as vitamins D and B12 is an excellent start. Not
only will fiber lower your cholesterol, reducing the risk of both stroke and
heart disease, but it will also prevent diverticulitis, among other things.
Calcium and vitamin D have also been shown to improve and maintain bone health,
therefore limiting the risk of fractures.

Even though it may be easier to resort to frozen or canned ...

CHANGING THE DEFINITION OF RETIREMENT
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
The definition of retirement is beginning to change. It used to be that
retiring meant no longer working. However, for some people the idea of no
longer working isn't an acceptable alternative. The desire to stay mentally
active plays a major role in one's decision to work during their retirement
years, as do financial concerns.
A staggering number of people reach the age of forty or older with not much
saved, which doesn't allow for a lot of time to make up the difference. Even
those who have planned accordingly are now faced with increasing life spans,
rising health care costs paired with declining health care coverage, and the
aftershock of the recent economic downturn on their savings accounts. Here are
some pros and cons that need to be considered when deciding whether or not to
work past the traditional retirement age.

The Pros
• Social interaction; many find that losing daily contact ...

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO NOW?
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Retirement is a decision to stop employment completely. Of course, choosing to
semi-retire is also an option. This decision is usually made once a person has
reached the age of 65, but some may choose to take an early retirement if their
health begins to deteriorate or if they have been forced into it by their
employer.

Other reasons for retiring early can include:

1. More time for friends and family.
2. Taking advantage of good health.
3. Reducing stress.
4. Escaping office politics.
5. A chance to switch to the career that you've always wanted.
6. The ability to relocate.
7. Time for travel.
8. Wanting to explore new interests and rediscover old ones. ...

THE HISTORY OF EASTER
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Easter is an important Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of
Jesus Christ. Crucified under the order of Pontius Pilate for accusations of
blasphemy, he arose three days later on Easter Sunday.
The word 'Easter' is derived from Eostre, the goddess of spring and fertility.
Eostre eventually gave way to the English word Easter either through an error
in translation, or on purpose in order to make the holiday more widely accepted.
Accepted it is. Easter is now more than just a single day observance. It begins
with Ash Wednesday, a 40-day period of reflection before Easter Sunday and
continues with Eastertide, a celebration of his ascension into heaven, for
another 50 days.
While North America tends to acknowledge this holiday with family dinners,
Easter eggs, bunnies and candy, other parts of the world celebrate it a bit
differently.

FEELING FABULOUS AFTER 50
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Retiring often involves a lot of strategic financial planning. But after
meeting with financial advisors, how many of us take as much of a proactive
approach with our health? Not only is prevention the key to your physical
health, but your financial health as well.

To ensure that your savings aren't depleted by health care costs, here are some
easy solutions that you can incorporate into your life.
Diet

Many of the problems we face are rooted in the things we eat. An internal
cleanse is an excellent way to rid the body of toxins. This can be done a
number of ways. Speak with your doctor to find out which is safe for you.

Along with cleansing your body, it's important to have both a multivitamin and
mineral supplement — ideally, one that includes magnesium to make up for what
you might be lacking in nutrition. However, when vitamins are taken in pill ...

HOW TO CUT COSTS AND SAVE MONEY DURING RETIREMENT
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Ideally, the onset of retirement would be greeted with relief. Unfortunately,
many see retirement as a deadline that if they haven't managed to save a lot of
money, they'll just have to do without.
Relax, it does not have to be that way. Here are some steps you can take to
ensure that your retirement years are everything that you want them to be.

1. Draft a financial plan. The biggest fear is running out of money. Creating a
financial plan will help to manage your fears, as well as your money. First,
determine where your money will be coming from: investments, pensions, or
savings. Figure out what you need to make each year to continue living the way
that you would like, and then allocate your money accordingly. It might also be
a good idea to meet with a financial planner who specializes in retirement, but
make sure that the expert only makes money off of the advice given to you — not
from commissions on products sold.

2. Eliminate any extra fees and charges. Now is a great time to take a closer
look at ...

THE HISTORY OF APRIL FOOL'S DAY
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
The first of April marks a day when just about everyone engages in a practical
joke or general foolishness. No one really knows when or how this tradition
began, but many speculate that it was established during the 16th century when
January 1st was again declared New Year's Day. However, this doesn't explain
early literary references like that of Chaucer. So which theory is correct?
Let's explore them further. Each New Year was originally celebrated in France
from March 25th through April 1st. Yet once Charles IX came into power, the
holiday was switched to January 1st with the Yet once Charles IX came into
power, the holiday was switched to January 1st with the introduction of the
Gregorian calendar. Communication being what it was at that time had many
receiving news of the change as much as seven years later. A few simply refused
to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on April 1st, lending them
to ridicule. Labeled as fools by society, these people were also often sent
on fool's errands ...

Editor's Letter
I have always found it interesting that we are so bombarded with American media
that oftentimes, we are not aware of our own. Perhaps it is because American
media is mainstream enough to appeal to a wide audience, also having the
resources to create and produce high-scale commodities. However, I am impressed
(and proud) of our quality homegrown sources. Whether it is a thought-provoking
indie film or a dramatic television series of our own, there is usually

SPRING FORWARD! CLEANING TIPS IDEAS
Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala
Now that we all have had a week to get used to the time change, it's time to
really spring forward and focus on getting ready for some warmer weather! For
most of us, that means spring cleaning. If you're not sure where to start,
follow our checklist and you'll be enjoying a cleaner space very soon. Before
you begin, it might be worth your while to make your own cleaning solutions
using simple ingredients that can be found around the house. Not only is it
greener, it's also inexpensive. Something as simple as ammonia is great for
washing walls, windows, floors, sinks and tile. Vinegar is best when trying to
remove mold, mildew, grime and grease. When it comes to sterilizing, though,
bleach is ideal. It's important that you never mix bleach with ammonia because
it creates toxic fumes.

Now that your armed with cleaning solutions, on to the list!

frames or artwork that is hanging on your walls. Remove all knick-knacks from

 FEBRUARY IS FOR LOVERS
Your Retirement by Brandee Cote

Whether you are looking forward to showering your loved one with gifts and
affection, or just altogether boycotting the commercialism of it, it's clear
that Valentine's Day is an important part of our history. Curious about its
origins? So are we, but the history of this holiday isn't a straightforward
one. Depending on what you choose to believe, there a few different legends and
according to the Catholic Church, just as many martyred saint Valentines. To
begin, it has been said that the Romans observed a holiday on February 14th to
honour Juno: the Queen of Roman Gods and Goddesses (also known as the Goddess
of Women and Marriage). The following day marked the beginning of a fertility
festival called Feast of Lupercalia. During this festival, it was custom for
men to draw the name of the girl they were to be paired with. This pairing
often led to marriage. Eventually viewed as an unchristian way to go about
choosing a mate, some believe...

Letter from the Editor

Valentine's Day. Some claim it's based on materialism and unrealistic
expectations. Others say there's no harm in celebrating 'love'. I never used to
really celebrate Valentine's Day myself, mostly because I think we should
appreciate the people we love year-round. However, we all take people for
granted occasionally, and Valentine's Day could be a positive reminder instead
of an over commercialized holiday. Although it's very much true at times, I
wonder if we take this materialism claim too far. Sometimes a token of
affection can be embodied in a gift as it is a love language to some
individuals. If the emphasis is on the celebration of love, then we will not
fall into the trap of how society has defined the day. Whatever the case, I
encourage you to celebrate on your own terms. We have just the thing in this
week's issue. From the little known origin of Valentine's Day to great movies
and fun recipes, there's sure to be an article that resonates with you. We want
to make this holiday memorable, something that you can share with loved ones.
After all, isn't that what Valentine's Day is about? Until next week! Olivia
Worobec Editor P.S. Be sure to check out our review of Gone With …
