Package: xmbase-grok
Version: 1.4.3-4

The switch statement, when used according to the Manual,
leads to a grok session, in which only the summary is shown
and no cards can be accessed.
Moreover, it is not possible to keep the current form by
switch(,...).
By the way, the on-line help does not know about switch,
but describes instead an equivalent search, which is not
recognized by the parser, however.

In Print fields I get empty displays when using avg(_somefield)
or qavg(_somefield), but curiously the latter version starts
to work after issuing a few queries.

I also tried to form expressions using foreach, but this
command does not seem to be recognized by the parser.

Finally, in exporting the built-in templates do not work, e.g.
the example given in the Manual:
grok -x phone html phone.html
grok phone: failed to create HTML file
It does work, however, by duplicating the built-in html into
~.grok/phone.tm/

I suspect that some of these problems might have to do with
the lesstif1 implementation.

Installed packages that grok depends on:
ii lesstif1 0.89.4-3 OSF/Motif implementation released
under LGPL
ii libc6 2.1.3-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries and
Timezone
ii xlib6g 3.3.6-10 shared libraries required by X clients
I'm running Debian 2.2 under kernel 2.2.17

If you start xmbase-grok and select File / Export... from the menu
without first opening a database, the program terminates immediately
without an error message.
Instead of this rather confusing behaviour, it should pop up an
error dialog.

This happens with the version linked against Lesstif and with the version
statically linked against Motif.

Greetings,

rrlogind should be removed from the archive.

The description for rrlogind says it is needed for authentication to
Road Runner, including in two areas of Ohio. Having lived in both
those areas, I can say that RR discontinued the login requirement in
those areas sometime before 2000.

I also know a former Road Runner network engineer, who recently
explained the purposes behind the login system, and said that RR
doesn't use the login system *anywhere* anymore.

Having the program in the archive could confuse RR users in the area
mentioned in its description, making them think they need it when it
won't even work for them anymore.

Policy section 13.1 says you may only link a manpage to undocumented(7) if a
bug has been filed saying a program does not have a manpage.

Since this package has a symlink to the above manpage, but has no bug filed
yet, this bug is serving that purpose.

Hi,

If I understand the code correctly, the -x argument is parsed as a
synonym for --warn, which is useless: -x is already used to change
opt-prefix at the beginning of argument processing.

Version: 1.26r4-2

linuxconf fails to build from source on i386, when doing a binary-all build.

I am filing this bug to notify you that I failed to build your
package from source. It is a serious problem that your source does not
build from source using the information provided in your control files,
and such a package should not be distributed in a stable Debian distribution.

This build was done using pbuilder package.

This package build-deps on libgd-dev, which depends on libpng3-dev.
This package build-deps on libpng2-dev, which is not parallel-installable.

Please switch over to png3.

regards,
junichi

Hi,

according to /usr/share/doc/libpam0g/Debian-PAM-MiniPolicy.gz
/etc/pam.d/linuxconf-pair is wrong in 2 respects:

1. it uses a full path to the PAM module (/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
instead of pam_pwdb.so):

The file should _not_ reference the full path of the modules. It only needs
to reference the basename (eg. pam_unix.so). This will ensure that the
program continues to work even if the module location changes, since
libpam itself will resolve the location.

2. it uses pam_pwdb.so instead of pam_unix.so:

Under no circumstances should any program in Debian use the pam_pwdb.so
module by default. Instead the pam_unix.so module should be used. Most
programs with RedHat support/default files will reference pam_pwdb.so in
their example files. Do not use this. There are several problems with
regard to pam_pwdb.so:
...

Hi,

I have removed the lilo package from this system (I'm using grub), but it still
had the config file /etc/lilo.conf. In this situation, linuxconf complains
that /sbin/lilo is missing.

linuxconf could either:

 - probe the state (installed/removed/purged) of the Debian package

 - not complain when the /sbin/lilo binary is missing

Subject: iDEFENSE Security Advisory: Linuxconf locally exploitable buffer
overflow

iDEFENSE Security Advisory 08.28.2002
Linuxconf locally exploitable buffer overflow vulnerability

DESCRIPTION

A vulnerability exists in linuxconf which if the
LINUXCONF_LANG environment variable processes at least 964
bytes of data, a buffer overflow occurs, thereby allowing an
attacker to modify the return address of the function and
execute arbitrary code with root permissions. iDEFENSE has an
exploit that allows a local user to launch a root shell on Red
Hat Linux 7.3 by targeting the latest version of linuxconf
1.28r3.

ANALYSIS

According to the author of Linuxconf, Jacques Gelinas
[EMAIL PROTECTED], linuxconf picks the variable and uses it
to format a path using snprintf. This works fine. In fact, the
receiving buffer is PATH_MAX large so even a 1000 characters
variable won't overflow it and even if this was the case,
snprintf would do its work.

Once the path is formatted, the corresponding file is opened.
If the file do not exist, an error message is formatted in a
string. This was the problem and sprintf was used instead of
snprintf there.

There are two fixes. One is to use snprintf to format error
message at this place and the other is to look for appropriate
length for this variable (max 5 characters) immediately when it
is found.

DETECTION

This vulnerability affects any version of linuxconf
(essentially 6 years worth of distributions) that is installed
setuid root. Generally, the four ways in which this utility
can be installed setuid are:

1.) Shipped by vendor (Red Hat does not ship linuxconf
setuid, but Mandrake does as do other linux vendors)
2.) Installed by RPM from the main site
(http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/linuxconf/) for each particular
linux OS (installs setuid root by default)
3.) Installed by source code also from main site
(http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/linuxconf/) but prompts for whether
to install setuid root
4.) Installed in ways 1, 2, or 3 and manually set to setuid
root by the user for added functionality.

WORKAROUND

Remove the setuid bit from the linuxconf binary:

$ chmod u-s /bin/linuxconf

VENDOR RESPONSE

iDEFENSE immediately contacted Jacques Gelinas and he provided
a source code patch. iDEFENSE verified that the vulnerability
is mitigated in the newer distribution (1.28r4) of linuxconf.

An updated version (1.28r4) of linuxconf which addresses this
vulnerability will be available on August 28, 2002 at
http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/linuxconf/ .

Affected Linux vendors will make updates available
August 28th, 2002.

package: emacs20-dl
version: 20.7-7

Please inform this report to the upstream.

A bug report for GNU Emacs with X selection (i.e., copypaste).

My Environment

 - Debian GNU/Linux Sid (unstable, developing version) i386.
 - GNU libc 2.2.3
 - XFree86 4.0.3
 - GNU Emacs 20.7.2

What I do?

1. Invoked Emacs without -nw.
2. Type C-h H to display many languages on Emacs.
3. By drugging mouse with pushing left button, Choose three
Japanese characters (Ni-Hon-Go) which mean Japanese language.
4. Go to Rxvt (compiled with multibyte language support) and
push middle button of mouse, to paste the characters.
5. I found (BF|K\8lB is inserted instead of correct Japanese
three characters. This is the bug.
6. Reproductivity: paste into Xedit (distributed with XFree86)
results in beep and ILLEGAL SELECTION in Xedit window.
Not only Japanese words but also Chinese (traditional and
simplified), Korean, Russian, and Greek also fails.

Analysis

I inserted a hook code into XChangeProperty() of libX11 to report
the content of data parameter. When I selected the three
Japanese characters of Ni-Hon-Go and pasted it into Rxvt,
the hook code reported (in hexadigimal)

data=1b 24 28 42 46 7c 4b 5c 38 6c 1b 28 42

Since Rxvt requires selection in COMPOUND_TEXT format, this
is a COMPOUND_TEXT byte sequence which Emacs generated.
The first four bytes means designate JIS X 0208 into G0.
Following six bytes are JIS X 0208 expression of Japanese
three characters. The last three bytes means designate
US ASCII into G0. Paste into Xedit, not Rxvt, made the
same byte sequence.

Rxvt receives the byte sequence using XmbTextPropertyToTextList()
function. I checked the return value of the function and
found it returns three. This means that XmbTextPropertyToTextList()
failed to process the last three bytes. Then Rxvt thinks
the selection byte sequence is illegal and falls into pasting
the raw byte sequence. This is the cause of the bug behavior.

I tested with many selections from Emacs and found that
all non-ASCII and non-ISO-8859-1 selections have a final
escape to designate ASCII in G0 and ISO-8859-1 in G1.

Here, to fix this bug behavior, we can consider three ways.

1. Modify Emacs not to generate the final escape sequence.
2. Modify X11 library (XmbTextPropertyToTextList()) to ignore
   the final escape sequence.
3. Modify X clients (many!) to ignore positive return value
   of XmbTextPropertyToTextList().

I think 3 is bad beacuse positive return value may be caused
by really illegal sequence. Then, which of 1 or 2?

COMPOUND_TEXT is described in xc/doc/specs/CTEXT/CTEXT.txt
in XFree86 (or X.org) distribution. Though it mentions
the *initial* state, it doesn't mention about the final
state. Thus, Emacs doesn't need to set the final state
into ASCII + ISO8859-1.

In conclusion, I think Emacs should be modified to fix this bug.

Version: 1.26-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

when I installed Samba on this machine, I had the choice between 2 modes:

 - daemon mode where Samba process is always running

 - inetd mode where Samba in started on demand

and I chose the inetd mode.

When I run linuxconf and exit, it always displays this message :

 Service samba is not running
   Executing: /etc/rc2.d/S20samba start

And thank you for this new linuxconf version !

Package: Linuxconf
version : 1.17r5-2

Whilst trying to use a number of different rtl8139 ethernet cards, I have
modified the contents in /etc/modutils/aliases to correctly include the
modules to load at boot time.

In addition, I have tried to use linuxconf to configure other settings.

linuxconf creates a file called conf.modules in /etc whereas what appears to
be required by modprobe is modules.conf

Once this file has been created by linuxconf, modprobe complains that the
use of conf.modules has been depreciated.

I presume that it means that this functionality has been replaced in recent
revisions and that the filename has been changed around.

removing this file and manually updating the details in
/etc/network/interfaces the network card is now working properly and can
connect to the LAN.

(also applies to linuxconf-x with the same version number)

Subject: Various problems with psplpr
Organization: CNUCE-CNR, Via S.Maria 36, Pisa - Italy +39-50-593211

Package: psptools
Version: 1.2.2-2
Severity: normal

Many problems.

1) A small one I corrected is that no newline is emitted when the --ppdpath
option is used. Here is a fix, but I am not a perl programmer:

--- /usr/bin/psplpr Mon Sep 16 09:37:24 1996
+++ /usr/local/bin/psplpr   Fri Sep 18 17:16:47 1998
@@ -787,7 +787,7 @@

 } elsif ($args[0] eq --${lopt_prefix}ppdpath) {
-   print ppd::ppdpath();
+   print ppd::ppdpath() . \n;
exit(0);
 } elsif ($args[0] eq --${lopt_prefix}help) {
usage(0);

2) Another problem is that psplpr wants a printcap entry to be made like
   this:

LWPT|lwpt|Stampante centralino\
:ty=LW8500:\
:bk:lp=:\
:rm=prtsrv0:\
:rp=lw8500pt:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/remote:\
:af=/var/log/lpremote/acct:\
:lf=/var/log/lpremote/log:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:

while I use to write them like this, which is legal by lpr standards:

LWPT
|lwpt
|Stampante centralino
:ty=LW8500
:bk:lp=
:rm=prtsrv0
:rp=lw8500pt
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/remote
:af=/var/log/lpremote/acct
:lf=/var/log/lpremote/log
:mx#0
:sh:

Notice that the names of the printer are on ddifferent lines, that entries
do not necessarily end with a colon, and that newlines are not escaped.

3) If no PRINTER env var is defined (nor any of the other names known by
psptools), it uses lp as the printer. It would be wise to use the
first printer in printcap, or else the default_printer entry, just like
   lpr does..

4) PPD files must end with .ppd. This is a useless requirement, in my
   opinion.

5) The most important of all: Apple laserwriter ppd files for LW640 and
lw8500 are not parsed at all: a --show all outputs nothing. I append
   the former.

This source package Build-Depends on libxaw-dev, which is wrong because it's
a pure virtual package. You need to specify a specific version of
libxaw-dev to be used (either libxaw6-dev or, preferably, libxaw7-dev).

(This is an automatically generated bug report based on an initial
template and on the contents of the Sources file for the main section.)

Hi,

Using option --dontincfeatures makes psplpr looping:

$ psplpr --dontincfeatures -o -  foo.ps
%!PS-Adobe-2.0
[...]
%%BeginSetup
%%Feature: *Resolution 600dpi
%%Feature: *Resolution 600dpi
%%Feature: *Resolution 600dpi
[... line repeated infinitely ...]

foo.ps is a simple file generated with latex+dvips (which I can
provide if needed).

I tried to trace the problem and found that the following patch solves
the problem. But as I don't speak Perl natively and I have no idea
what psplpr is supposed to do here, I don't know if it is correct.

package: xcoral_3.1_2.deb

Hi there!

I just want to add a comment on the above mentioned package, which I got
from ftp.de.debian.org (out of hamm/hamm) belonging to the future-to-be
Debian 2-release.

This looks like a nice text editor to me, but unfortunately I am missing
some help how to set up this thing. When installing the package with dpkg,
no man-pages were included. The example-file is not commented, just a
line-up of things and the help included in xcoral itself is not much of a
help when it comes to setting up this soft.
I would really like to use it under x but I am no programmer or
informatics student, so I am really dependend on some kind of additional
information.

Best wishes,

Kerstin

'linuxconf' used to work for me, but running it now shows:

#linuxconf
Module pythonmod does not exist
Error message from remadmin :/bin/remadmin: 36: Syntax error: Bad fd number

Then nothing, it doesn't close. I have to do Ctrl-C to get the command
prompt back.

Looking at the code of '/bin/remadmin', (a shell script), line 36 is:
echo No suitable linuxconf front-end installed.

Hope this helps...

Package: xcoral
Version: 2.5-1

Today, I decided to try xcoral. The first operation I tried, upon
starting it, was New. This was sufficient to kill the program, with
the error message:

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 12 (X_ConfigureWindow)
  Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 924
Current serial number in output stream: 930

It may be relevant that I'm using 9wm.

Description: Extensible mouse-based text editor for X.
This is a multiwindow mouse-based text editor for the
 X Window System.

If there is a toolbar button for cut, there should have been one for
copy first.

The bar is not crowded, but at least there should be a key-button(cut)
combination to copy.

Block selection by mouse shares the primeval one-off bug of dosedit,
which was fixed in Windows eons ago.

youbin lacks a manpage for the simple program sendto. Perhaps someone
can write one, but I think it's pretty much useless. Besides, I bet
one would need japanese skills.

Have you verified that current versions of Emacs don't suffer from this
bug or #152843? (Well, actually, according to the log of #152843 bugs
have been reported against other Emacs versions; but even there I'd have
been inclined to reassign and merge rather than closing so that the
submitter gets proper notification when the bug is really fixed.)
