The net port has to be configured first via serial. You'll need a Cisco console cable to connect it to your computer correctly. You can use Putty on windows to connect via serial, Screen on Linux works as well.

At the silo boot prompt try typing "modprobe.blacklist=qla2xxx" then press enter. That will disable the on board fiber, but it may boot. Does the blade 1000 use fc-al disks? Re: Debian Sparc 7.10.0 Install Problems
Just curious, How "new" does a system have to be in order to meet these requirements. T-5 machines are probably not too hard to come by, but the starting price of a T-7 machine is around 40K USD IIRC. That doesn't count the M series of machines either which has quite a bit different hardware. Debian Wheezy is already no longer supported, except for the LTS branch which deals with i386 and amd64 architectures only. Thus, any issues you may have that are related to bugs will never be fixed. Plus, since Debian Wheezy, we have fixed a large number of bugs which affect both sparc and sparc64. In particular, kernel development has been very active in the past 12 months since Oracle decided to release their own distribution called "Linux for SPARC". > It would be interesting to get a build > environment running, but are there any resources out there to > get started ?. I think support for that was even dropped in the Linux kernel. You are welcome to perform test installations on your hardware with the ISO I have provided and report back any feedback. But we don't need any additional old hardware. What we need to make "sparc64" an official supported port in Debian is actual new hardware. This is one of the requirements by the Debian System Administrators (DSA) as they don't want to deal with old hardware breaking apart when building packages for a release architecture. Re: How to use a serial console on Ultra 1?
John, Booting to serial console is just an alternative. If you want to verify your hardware before you install Linux, you can just boot up your Ultra 1 with Solaris Installation CD. You should be able to verify your keyboard/video/hard disk at minimum. As far as console, minicom works really well from Linux or tip if you have another Solaris box. Just be sure you are using a null modem cable with 8N1 (8 bit/No parity/1 stop bit) setting at 9600 baud. Alex John Zbesko wrote: Thank you for your reply. What I haven't found is instruction on what software to use to actually make the connection. I could use an example, like, open a terminal on the laptop, run minicom (?), set minicom to vt100 emulation, "connect" to the com port, etc. I would not be so noobie-like, if everything were working fine, but if I'm trying to diagnose a problem, then I need to determine if something is broken, rather than learning how to use a serial logon. Re: Question on mknbi
The netboot package includes /usr/bin/mknbi-linux. I don't know if this is what you are looking for. Keep in mind that the Sparc hardware can only handle a.out binary on netboot. After your kernel compilation, you need to run "elftoaout" on your uncompressed kernel before you put it out in your tftp server. I don't know if there is any integrated packages to make the task easier. I just started playing with this couple weeks ago. You can use the kernel doc "initrd.txt" and the program "piggyback64" to create your boot image. If you are not building sparc64 kernel, you use "piggyback" instead. Re: ultra1 creator system freeze after terminal detach
It sounds like hyperterm sends out a break signal during disconnect. There are several ways to correct your problem. 1. Figure out how to disable the sending of the break signal from hyperterm or use other terminal program which does not send out the break signal. 2. You can configure OBP not to react to the break signal. I don't remember how to do this. But this is not a good idea. 3. You can configure the kernel to ignore the break signal. sysctl -w kernel/stop-a=0 On 11/12/2004 12:22 PM, Stefan Bauer wrote: > hello, > > i used a windows box with hyper terminal to connect to my sun > workstation via seriel connection (rs232). after finnished the install > process i detached the serial connection; reason was a total system > freeze of my box. if i restart the connection (from hyper terminal to > sun box) i can use 'go' to reactivate the whole box and everything works > fine. > > its a sun ultra1 creator, more infos below: > > Sun Ultra 1 UPA/SBus (UltraSPARC 167MHz), Keyboard Present > OpenBoot 3.25, 128 MB memory installed, Serial #8973688. > Ethernet address 8:0:20:88:ed:78, Host ID: 8088ed78. > > OpenBOOT: > > Release 3.25 Version 0 created 1999/12/03 11:38 > OBP 3.25.0 1999/12/03 11:38 > POST 3.11.4 1997/05/27 02:26 > > my question is now, how can i prevent the system freeze? > > thanks in advance > > stefan

This gives you the base installation then you can decide any additional software. If you have to install 5 or more machines, CDROM will be a good approach which conserves the net traffic. Net install is more elegant and flexible but you have to setup bootp/tftp/dhcp servers. This is well documented in the installation doc. If you know how to do Solaris Net install, Linux is very similar.

Hi, I suggest you read some basic Debian material for getting started. This kind of information (basic Debian package handling) Google can give you. As with all architectures there are -image debs which will install a compiled binary image, and -source packages which will give you the source used for compiling the equivalent -image. How to compile a sun4u kernel the Debian way (including google search terms): http://tinyurl.com/65wfq How to configure a kernel for sun4u (or not): http://www.ultralinux.org/faq.html#q_4_7 That FAQ should also answer other basic questions for Sparc beginners. Re: Sarge installer fails at "Saving installation logs"
Hello, I'd say that's a bad daily, you you tried older images ? It probably wants to say: `E: Unimplemented function' On the other hand, you could investigate what happens after the 75% / installation log (I believe you're actually completely or almost completely done - maybe LiLo/Grub is missing) and do it yourself on the 2nd console. best regards, Alex Bartok On Fri, 2004-08-06 at 11:34, Robert Waldner wrote: > Hi! > > Yesterday I was trying to install Sarge on my SS10. Hi, this may sound stupid, but did you try to mount the target fs to that mount point (/target) ? Copying a single large file over from the SS5 to the XP box and looking at the network traffic in task manager shows an almost perfectly flat line at 10% of the 100Mb/s adapter's available bandwidth, that's what made me think it was a negotiation problem. Hooray. The first time I saw b4 working on non-x86... until got to the base-system component, which failed because the scsi-cd module could not be loaded (what the heck ?). Anyway, I went for the woody netinst now and did a dist-upgrade. Working like a charme. I just have one slightly OT question: Has anyone had problems with mp3s skipping in xmms & mpg321 ? It's like timewarped playback. The card is a CS4231a. (Note, using plain alsa in xmms gives scrambled output, sounds like I'm listening to some capacitors having a party. xmms-esd "works" in the way mentioned above. mpg321 works straight out of the box with no parameters). -Alex > -Original Message- > From: Blars Blarson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 11:52 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; debian-sparc@lists.debian.org > Subject: Re: Latest Sarge netboot failing... > > In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> you write: > >Gives the exact same effect as the b4 image: > > > >VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem) > >Setting up filesystem, please wait ... > >Unimplemented SPARC system call 188 > >Unimplemented SPARC system call 188 > >Unimplemented SPARC system call 188 > >Unimplemented SPARC system call 188 > >Unimplemented SPARC system call 188 > >Unimplemented SPARC system call 188 > >umount: /initrd: invalid argument > >Segmentation fault > > Segmentation fault > > Segmentation fault > > > >[endless loop while producing screen distortions] > > > That problem is with bterm and sbus or upa bus framebuffers. > "debian-installer/framebuffer=false" is the workaround. > > -- > Blars Blarson [EMAIL PROTECTED] > http://www.blars.org/blars.html > With Microsoft, failure is not an option. I just tried Herbert Kaminski's `workaround` (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=243122) - without any luck, adding 'rw' to the kernel options doesn't work with an image 2-3 weeks old. Sarge Installer (Daily Build) on Ultra 60
Hey there, I know my way around Debian on the Intel platform, however I'm a newbie when it comes to Sparc64. I have an Ultra60 with a SCSI subsystem; the cdrom I'm trying to install from has SCSI ID 5. OpenBoot version is 3.23, Memory is 512MB. NVRAM is in mint condition. The Image I'm attempting to install is: http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/daily/sparc/current/sarge-sparc-neti nst.iso - It's said to install stable on the website. The SCSI Controller is properly identified during the boot process (devices are identified ok, HD + CDROM are listed) Now the actual problem occurs even before it gets to the installer, namely it can't mount the root fs from the CD VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 00:00 Please append a correct root="" boot option Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00 Press L1-A to ... Appending root=/dev/scd0 doesn't do the trick, any pointers? (Note: I've done some quick googling and read other mailing list posts: I'm *not* trying to append the param on the OpenBoot prompt, but from the silo prompt, as in linux root=/dev/scd0) Also, the machine has two NICs, an onboard happymeal 10/100 (which wasn't working under Solaris - kept telling me about a missing link although the network hardware was fine and tested with another intel based machine) and one I just bought on eBay (X1033A). Both get detected fine when booting the Debian installer cd, as eth0 and eth1, however, both get identical MACs - is this correct ? Please forgive my stupidity and these - probably - idiotic questions, but everybody's a beginner sometime ;)

Re: Moved to 2.4.21 kernel
Is your SBUS NIC a "Happy Meal Ethernet" card? "hme" is not compiled in the Sparc32 kernel 2.4.21. Perhap, try this: modprobe sunhme [macaddr=0x0,0x0,0x0,0x0,0x0,0x0] You only need to specify "macaddr" if you want a different mac from your onboard Lance Ethernet. I also observed a feature about assigning mac. My Sparc Classic/Gateway has 2 SBUS NICs and onboard Lance. When I specified mac for one of the sunhme, the kernel automatically assigns the next sequential mac for the second sunhme. I just recently began to understand kernel modules, but in my quest to keep the image size down, I tried to make everything one. Yes, there is a limit to SILO image size, it's around 3.5 Meg. It doesn't matter if its gzipped because its unzipped to the memory space with the limit. It's not a hardware issue per se, there's a decent thread here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/2003/debian-sparc-200311/msg00125.html Now I boot through the filesystem stuff, but I still get stuck here: Hdc: ATAPI 32x CD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12 ... The keyboard lights flash once and it locks. Booting with the SILO -p option is pretty useless because it clears out too quickly a few times and the reboots. Stop+A doesn't work during the sequence. Is there a way to slow this down or something? What about my input stuff? CONFIG_SERIO=y CONFIG_SERIO_I8042=y CONFIG_SERIO_SERPORT=y CONFIG_INPUT_KEYBOARD=y # CONFIG_KEYBOARD_ATKBD is not set CONFIG_KEYBOARD_SUNKBD=y Sorry for being so difficult. RE: Ultra5 + Linux kernel 2.6.1 = hangs while booting
Devfs doesn't seem to be a problem, it was just the line before the console error. I tried some of Christian Hopp's ideas, but I had already enabled everything mentioned (The config on the web gives me a 403 error, permissions?). I have attached my current config (which still doesn't work). RE: Ultra5 + Linux kernel 2.6.1 = hangs while booting
Cool, I didn't know about that option, I should have looked into SILO debugging more. What I get now, is that it loads things pretty normally through all the normal hardware stuff, but right after it loads the root fs read-only and devfs, I get this: EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly. Mounted devfs on/dev Warning: unable to open an initial console It then reboots, I had to Stop+A to get that to copy it down. Is this a graphics/framebuffer problem? My current kernel says this: Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 1060x64 Fb0: ATY Mach64 frame buffer device on PCI Pty: 265 Unix98 ptys configured Thanks for the help, I hope this is enough info. -Alex -Original Message- > boot: linux6 > Loaded kernel version 2.6.1 > > Remapping the kernel... done. > Booting Linux... > > Where it flashes the keyboard LEDs once, then appears to freeze > indefinitely. > I have tried many of the graphics modules, but is there one I need > specifically? Ultra5 + Linux kernel 2.6.1 = hangs while booting
Hi Everyone, I currently have version 2.4.18 #2 of the kernel, which came when I installed woody for Sparc. Everything is 'stable', except for gcc and related packages which were upgraded to 'testing' (gcc 3.3.2). I have been trying to compile a version of 2.6.1 for over a week with lots of problems and I'm finally stuck, exhausting the web and forums, and need some help. I have tried endless .config permutations, the most promising being the 2.6 Ultra10 example from: http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/configs/kernel/ It seems like a lot of people like me have trouble with the size of the kernel, and I can't ever use vmlinux, even compressed, so I follow these steps: make menuconfig make make image make modules make modules_install The arch/sparc64/boot/image is then placed in /boot (along with the new /boot/System.map) and added to silo.conf. Whenever I try to boot to this from silo, I get: boot: linux6 Loaded kernel version 2.6.1 Remapping the kernel... done. Booting Linux... Where it flashes the keyboard LEDs once, then appears to freeze indefinitely. I have tried many of the graphics modules, but is there one I need specifically? How will my Ultra5 config need to be different from the Ultra10? Should I go back to a 2.6 instead of 2.6.1? Any ideas would be truly appreciated; I'm just tired of compiling. Dual boot between Linux and Solaris yielded "spurious interrupt" msg
In setting up dual boot on my Sparc Classic between Linux and Solaris, I encountered this message: Boot options: [1] Linux Kernel 2.4.21 [2] Solaris 9.0 SunOS Release 5.9 Version Generic_112233-08 32-bit Copyright 1983-2003 Sun Microsystems, Inc. This is my "silo.conf": $ cat /etc/silo.conf partition=2 timeout=80 message=/boot/message.txt root=/dev/sdc2 default=linux read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21 alias=1 single-key label=linux other=/iommu/sbus/espdma/esp/[EMAIL PROTECTED],0;1 alias=2 single-key label=solaris I tried silo version "0.9.8" and "1.2.5". Both version yielded the same message on the console output. Does anyone have any idea what this is? How can I move forward? I already searched the bug report but this has not been recorded. Thanks for any assistance. Alex

SS5 170 crashed with 2 S-Bus Happy Meal
The SS5 170 is my Masquerade machine. It was running solid with Woody before I replaced the second Lance card with the 2 Happy Meals. I was testing to see how much throughput I gain with the Happy Meal. I ran "ftp" behind the SS5 using an Ultra 2 with Solaris 9. Upload or download would lock up the SS5. I did not get any error from the console since it is running headless nor anything in "/var/log". It will not even accept a [Break] key to escape to the OBP. Both Happy Meals are good. I tested them individually in the Ultra 2 and got 9.5MB/s with crossover cable to Windows 2k. Has anyone seem this? Any suggestion what else I should try? Thanks.

Student - University of Cape Town, South Africa It almost sounds to me that setterm is blanking out your screen during disuse. I'm not sure what init script changes this, maybe someone else can tell you this, (/etc/rc.?/) but it's one of the sysinit scripts that gets run when the machine goes into multiuser mode, I think. I know the command to fix it would be /bin/setterm -blank 0 would keep setterm from blanking the screen. If you found which initscript that was in, you could edit the time period until it blanks and set it to 0. --Alex __ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! re:optical mouse
I actually do have the special mouse pad that the mouse requires. My problem is that the mouse does not even emit a laser beam when you boot the system. I don't even know if it's supposed to do that, but I know of no way to make it work. My keyboard has a little door on the underside of it. Is there a jumper underneath there or anything I'm suppoed to set? I also have another keyboard for it, if it turns out I'm using the wrong keyboard. The guy I bought the machine from said you had to buy the mouse and keyboard as a matched set, so I'm assuming that my one of the keyboards is supposed to work with the mouse. FYI. The previous owner stated that he could not even get the mouse to run under Solaris, so it may be that the mouse is non-functional... Thanks for all the help! --Alex Cavnar __ Do You Yahoo!? Optical mouse?
Greetings, I have a SparcStation 5, and I recently got a keyboard/ optical mouse pair from the guy I bought the system from. He said he could never get the mouse to work on the machine, so it could just be that it's non-functioning, but are there any tricks or techniques one must use to make the Sun optical mouse work on my machine? Note that a regular analog mouse works on my machine, so I know it's not my mouse port. Any help would be appreciated! --Alex __ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! compiling kernel 2.4.16
Greetings, I am attempting to compile kernel 2.4.16 for my SPARC Machine. I am mainly interested in ext3 support for my machine for faster crash recovery times. When I make vmlinux, I get the error : Wrong use of 'disable_irq' in '.text.exit' section. It can only be used in .text, .text.init, .fixup and __ksymtab make[1]: *** [btfix.s] Error 1 Is this error common? I get it with every version I've tried, from 2.4.13ac8 to 2.4.17. I did set it to use /dev/sunmouse, and I have tried many protocols. I think the one that the XFree web site has was "busmouse" I think that is what it is at right now. Regards, Alex > do you have the correct dev for the mouse (/dev/sunmouse)? what > protocol are you using? > > -tduffy > > > 1

How to obtain a list of deb packages after [Select] of dselect
I have successfully gone through the floppy base install of the system. I do not want to install via ppp since I only have a 28.8 modem. Is there a way I can obtain the list of needed packages via "dselect" or "apt"? So that I can download all of my needed files from an ethernet connection and dump them into my Jazz drive. I am trying to avoid mirroring those binary* directories since I am not about to create a CD. Thanks.

I assume that you have figured this out already. My replied is intended for others who try to do the same thing. Basically, you would use the current image disk. It is "disks-sparc/1998-05-25" at the time of this message. After you created the boot disk, you would copy the new Turbosparc kernel and its System.map file to the boot disk (make sure you use the same file name as the existing disk). You will copy the module tarball to the driver disk. By the way, the current Turbosparc kernel is in ftp://vger.rutgers.edu/pub/linux/Sparc/kernel/v2.0/980805/. This newer kernel works for me. It appears that there is some timing problem on the boot script. It tried to eject the floppy too soon before the root disk prompt message.
