I downgraded the compface package to 89.11.11-9 and now, after many attempts and many megabytes of downloaded packages, I finally have a working Xemacs 19.15. I guess a similar solution, but with more libraries involved, goes for the 'bo' version of xemacs. And I think that xemacs20 is just plain buggy or it depends on some libc6 library I don't have. BTW, can somebody take a close look at the 'Dependencies:' line of the xemacs20 package? I think there is definately something wrong here. AFAIK libc6 should go with ncurses3.4 (not 3.0) and elf-x11r6lib is obsolete[1]. Remco [1] Is elf-x11r6lib really obsolete? I saw a lot of packages in /var/lib/dpkg/available that still depend on it. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Xemacs: strange errors
Today I tried to install xemacs, but I haven't been successful in running it. First, I tried to install the packages xemacs19_19.15-3.1.deb and xemacs19-support_19.15-3.1.deb from hamm, since I have been following the hamm tree for a while now. But instead of a nice program, I got this: $ xemacs xemacs: can't resolve symbol '__sigsetjmp' Does anybody know why this happens? I then removed these and tried to install xemacs_19.14-1.deb and xemacs-support_19.14-1.deb from bo, but then I got $ xemacs Segmentation Fault (core dumped). 3C509B ISA Detection
Hi. I will try and make this as brief as possible while trying to explain everything I have tried. Simply put, I cannot get my 3Com Etherlink III (3C509B) to work with Debian Linux 1.3.1 kernel 2.0.29. (i486DX4 VLB w/16MB) Before I go on I should add that I have not used this in any other machine either, like Win95. I run the DOS Etherdisk diagnostics and everything works fine. I have tried it with and without the PNP options enabled. I have changed the IRQ and base addresses to various ones. But every time I boot up linux I get no mention of even a probe for eth0. I have tried lilo boot time parameters like 'linux ether=10,0x0300,eth0' as well as ones in my /etc/lilo.conf like 'append reserve=0x0300,32 ether=10,0x0300,0,0,eth0.' I have recompiled the kernel with static and module support. I have tried 'insmod' and 'modprobe -a 3c509.o' and get back things like device or resoure busy and '/lib/modules/2.0.29/net/3c509.o unresolved symbol mca_set_adapter_name, mca_find_adaptor, mca_read_stored_pos. I finally went to the point of reinstalling Debian and when I tried the module probe for the 3C509 series I got device or resoure busy. The card lights up fine in the back as well. Now when I boot up I get the SCIOCC... problems talked about in the Ethernet-HOWTO. I think these come from my /etc/init/d/network file which has all of the 'ifconfig' commands. But no where do I see in 'dmesg | more' anything about my ethernet card. I feel like either my card is broken or I have no support compiled in for my card. I have tried everything I know how to do. I have thouroughly read the Ethernet-HOWTO and NET-3-HOWTO's as well. I'm stuck! Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! darin [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: Modem Test?
Unless you mispoke, I believe you may be misusing /dev/modem. /deb/modem is not a device itself, only a sym link (the wisdom of which is frequently disputed) which points to the serial device your modem is connected to. You want /dev/modem to be a sim link pointing to /deb/ttyS0. As people have pointed out, you want /dev/ttyS0, not tty0. Install problem
Hi, just recieved Debian 1.3.1 and tried to install. I have done it with loadlin under dos and got no problems until dselect. I don't know how to go further. If I try to use "access" and then "cdrom", it is asked for a "block device" and I really didn't find a clue what to put in there. If I tried "mounted" and gave in the path to the cd's I got always the response that "dev/cdrom/stable 386.gz" (or something similar) is not founded there. I checked the cd's for such a file but didn't found it. Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance. Volker -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Also you may need the following in /etc/ppp/options: # force pppd to use your ISP user name as your 'host name' during the # PAP/CHAP authentication process name dcinege.! (with you user name) And if you experence machine gun redialing, comment out: lcp-echo-interval 30 lcp-echo-failure 4 With both my Zyxels the LCP answers from my ISP, would not be acknowledged. Where's my mouse?
Hi all, I'm doing a vanilla install of Debian 1.3.1 and I'm having trouble configuring my mouse. The problem (I believe) first comes in the Install phase of dselect when gpm is being installed The gpm install uses /dev/ttyS0 as the default device for my mouse. I've tried taking stabs at all four ttyS? but no luck. What's the strategy for determining which device is your mouse? quick question/answer need.
Do to politics at work, I have been thrown into a mess a lab installation. The Dean would like to have dual boot NT and a i386 unix variant. Linux seems to be the only platform to support our hardware. I have no time to research, only time to do... So I'm asking if Debian linux can do this for me: 1. Use Authentication via NISplus to a Solaris 2.5.1 machine. 2. Mount an "application disk" from a Debian Linux fileserver. I don't have much time, therefore no time to find, let alone RTFM. Otherwise I would. All help is appreciated. Yes, you *are* requesting PAP. This is what happens when you pass 'auth' to pppd, it *requires* the peer to authenticate itself. With pcomp the LSB of the first byte indicate whether or not a second byte follows. So, you can save a byte per frame by using this. accomp == Address-and-Control-Field-Compression PPP uses HDLC-like framing for its packets (otherwise to be referred to as frames rather than packets). This format uses an Address for the data-link layer (in this case, basically your modem). Since PPP is generally run between two points only, the address and control fields can be compressed and save some Bs. Motif for Linux..

Debian libc5 to libc6 Mini-HOWTO (regular posting)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Debian libc5 to libc6 Mini-HOWTO Scott K. Ellis, [EMAIL PROTECTED] v2.1, August 22, 1997 1. Introduction The Debian project is currently in the process of putting together the next release of the Debian system. This version will utilize the new libc6, a replacement for the prior libc5 which includes many enhancements and brings the Linux C library back into sync with the GNU project. We are doing this in a way to allow you to continue to utilize your older software by providing development and operating environments for both C libraries. However, all packages in the new release will be linked with the new C library. This has made it slightly more difficult to install packages from the unstable branch of our development tree into a working system. There is a slight possibility of making your system unbootable in the process, this guide is intended to help you avoid such problems. 1.1. Recent Changes: o Note about libc6-based e2fsck being bad for large partitions. o Reorganized slightly and added more information about possible problems. o Moved ldso above libc6, incase they have an ancient ldso. o Raised versions required for bash and libreadline(g)2 to the official maintainer versions to avoid possible version mismatch breakage. o Added a note saying that allowing dselect to upgrade the listed packages might result in an unbootable system. o Added ncurses3.0 to list of packages after realizing that libreadline2 depended on it. This may not be necessary, as everyone should already have ncurses3.0 installed. 1.2. Disclaimer As always, this document comes with NO WARRANTY. These comments are based on my personal experience and experimentation. While this worked for me off a freshly installed v1.3.1 system, you mileage may vary. Please send any comments or corrections to [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2. Requirements 2.1. Minimum Requirements The minimum list of packages to install to be able to run unstable- branch packages is below. Install these packages one at a time in exactly the order listed. When versions are mentioned, that is a minimum suggested version, any later version should also be acceptable. IMPORTANT: If you use dselect to do the initial upgrade to these packages, there is a very good possibility of breaking bash and therefore making your system unusable. o ldso_1.9.5-1 o libc6_2.0.4-1 o ncurses3.0_1.9.9e-2 o ncurses3.4_1.9.9g-3 o libreadline2_2.1-4 o libreadlineg2_2.1-4 o bash_2.01-2 2.2. Other Suggested Packages These packages are not absolutely essential for the functioning of the packages in unstable, but are still very useful. The new dpkg-dev may be necessary for unpacking source archives from unstable, and the new dpkg-ftp is needed if you wish to use the ftp method of dselect to upgrade your system to the unstable distribution. o libg++272_2.7.2.5-2 o dpkg_1.4.0.19 o dpkg-dev_1.4.0.19 o dpkg-ftp_1.4.9 3. Development If you wish to do libc6 development, you should first purge all the '-dev' packages on your system, the new development system will use packages with the suffix '-dev' for libc6 development and '-altdev' for libc5 development. You will wish to install the latest libc5 package, and altgcc if you wish continue to do libc5 development as well. Some libraries haven't been recompiled for the new libc6 yet, check that all your vital libraries are available before upgrading. Linking libc5-based libraries with libc6-based programs will have unpredictable results. 4. Concerns 4.1. Upgrading bash The package bash_2.01-1 requires that you have libreadlineg2_2.1-3 or greater installed. Not for 1.1, the version in stable, which is what Jim was talking about. The lack of documentation for this version is a real hassle. Apache didn't distribute docs with 1.1, they just referred you to their web site. The problem is that they don't have documentation for 1.1 on the web site any more (what's there is the 1.2 docs with some but not all of the changes between 1.1 and 1.2 pointed out as such). Note that the Graphics are one of Excels strong points (especially compared to other Windows based Spreadsheats). I agree fully that for manipulating graphics a GUI interface is often well suited. Another example is the ease with which you can make flow text around a picture with a complicated contour in say PageMaker compared to how difficult that is in TeX. Note that even in one of its strong points Excel lets you down. F.i. Excel supports logarihtmic graphs (hooray!) but they don't look "terrificly beautiful" to me and you cannot plot say betwen 10^-5 and 10^-3 because the upper scale is arbitrarily limited to be 10 or above. It seems that they only built it in to be able to display Bill Gates's net worth against time :-). > as much as i dislike Win95/NT/MS, this Excel->PowerPoint process > was unbelievable and beats the heck out of grinding through gnuplot's > numerous options. However I do not see what the ease of creating bussiness graphics in Excel has to with the merits of Powerpoint. One should check how the linux bases spreadsheats like Applix, StarCalc and [insert other one who's name I cannot remember right now] do in this respect? As far as I know there aren't any GUI graphics programs for Linux. The closest I know is gnuplot outputting to fig for xfig. Well, Folks, I found the answer to my question ("which emulator does Linus use to run PowerPoint?"). Found it on http://www.ssc.com/lj/issue29/interview.html which is an interview with Linus Torvalds. The answer is: Wabi is a nice program (I've been using it to make slides with PowerPoint under Linux) and a lot of people will find the reason to pay for it. However, it won't revolutionalize Linux the way Wine may do---a freely available windows emulation package will make a lot of difference for the whole market, while Wabi makes a lot of difference to only a subset of the market. Obviously, right now Wabi is a lot more advanced than Wine, but we'll see what happens in a year or two. But, as I say, if you can't run it on Linux then too bad, since > you have to run it somehow. true. MS is inescapable. Programs like WINE and WABI and Willow's TWIN are useful and necessary because linux needs more apps (preferably freeware, but commercial is fine too). The Win emulators allow (or will allow, when they are debugged enough) linux access to the enormous range of windows applications. linux native apps would be better but until there's enough of them around, we need emulators. > That sentence: "Microsoft's huge installed base of users and wide > range of applications is unlikely to be surpassed, despite what > believers in the Linux magic might hope" is depressingly accurate. > There's an awful lot of people out there using a wide range of MS > software, and if your living depends on dealing with them then you > have to come to terms with it. IMO, microsoft should get out of the operating system game and leave it to those who actually have a clue about OSeslike linux or bsd kernel hackers and unix programmers for example. MS should focus on their applications which, for the most part, aren't too bad. in fact, some of their apps are fairly decent if you like that sort of thing. if MS did do this, then they would a) have better apps because they run on a much better OS, and b) wouldn't have to worry about US anti-trust suits because they no longer control the OS (which is, of course, why they would be reluctant to do this) I think that MS will have to do this within a few years anyway. no commercial OS will be able to compete with the free operating systems like linux or freebsd. Linux isn't playing catch-up anymore, and hasn't done for at least a year...it's now already better/faster/more reliable than the commercial OSes, and development proceeds at a phenomenal rate. Linux only needs a few good "killer apps" to make the corporate world really sit and take notice - corps already see linux and apache as one of the leading contenders for their internet gateway / web server. A few good apps would make linux a winner when it becomes necessary to upgrade their "aging" and "obsolete" Pentium-166 machines which have "only" 32mb of memory and can't run the latest BloatWare 99 apps. support costs on a network of unix/linux machines are cheaper too - the support person can telnet in and look around ... which is a lot quicker than the usual "tell me what you see on the screen? ok, if it says this then type blah, if you don't see this little icon thingy then do that, otherwise i'll have to come up and have a look at your machine". another reason it's cheaper is that if users don't have root access on their desktop machine then they can't screw it up too badly. upgrading and maintaining software can be done over the network, easily. maybe i'm being overly optimistic, but i really do see a time in the not-too-distant future when linux WILL be a viable contender for the desktop operating system market. (and i like the sound of that because I absolutely loathe and detest having to fix severely broken Win systems, even if i do get paid quite well for doing it. i'd rather be paid for 1 hour's pleasant and stress-free work than for 3 hours of microsoft hell). > I'm looking forward to WordPerfect-7 for Linux (just out: see > http://www.sdcorp.com) which should alleviate some of the problems. this is the kind of thing that linux needs - apps, apps, and more apps. craig -- craig sanders networking consultant Available for casual or contract temporary autonomous zone system administration tasks. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Gnus is a mailreader that comes with Emacs and XEmacs. I usually start my Gnus session with 'emacs -f gnus' or 'xemacs -f gnus'. See http://www.gnus.org/ for more info about Gnus. Basically if you get either one of the emacsen you get everything that's needed for Gnus too. Gnus has lot's of features and options but the news reading with it can be really simple too. I usually use space, q and the arrow keys and get along just fine. I hope this helps. PS. The current version of gnus is spelled as Gnus. An older version of gnus that came with older emacsen was called GNUS. fsck from cron?
Hi all! I had a problem on a debian box (not related to debian, I think it's hardware) but I'd like to ask here anyway. It's a 1.1 debian box with some upgrade to 1.2, pentium 166/64MB ram, ide disk and aha2940+dat tape (I know, I know server should never use ide - I'll switch to SCSI as soon as retailers open after summer vacations). The problem was fs error totally blocking the machine. After a bad day spent fsck'ing an ide disk with file system inconsistencies (was that the word?) I was wondering if/how was possible to do some kind of scheduled-fsck checks for those machines that never reboot (well, almost never), something done weekly, monthly .. That would not eliminate fs errors (I have never seen fs errors on a linux box in 4 years), but would catch them early and on a regular base. I think this can be quite tricky, since when you check / you have nothing to write to (no mail/log file), and I'm not so sure what the best check order would be (check / first, check it last), and I don't know if cron can be run on a system in that state. Before the crash, that system showed strange messages that were never logged anywhere. I don't have them, since I was not there when machine stopped, but I wonder why file system inconsistencies are not logged. Some weeks ago we had messages saying something like "bad pdm .." I wrote it on a piece of paper, so I can send it if this can help understand what happened. Those messages were not logged too (that's why I understimated them). Alexander, could you share with me your sendmail.mc? This is the setup I need, and I decided to switch back to sendmail, so I can administer just one MTA everywhere I work: 1. Local mail gets delivered right away (or as soon as sendmail kicks in). If I send mail from 'usera' to 'userb' (just like that, no domain specification), I want userb to see her mail as coming from 'usera' (no domain). [This last one is a weak requirement, and I could live without it]. 2. Outgoing mail gets queued until I dial up my ISP. At this point, I may want to force its delivery by issuing 'sendmail -q'. If I send mail from 'usera' to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', Bruce must see this mail as coming from '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' (that is, for outgoing mail I wish to masquerade as 'my.isp.site'). 3. I'll fetch incoming mail with fetchmail, which will deliver it to port 25 (SMTP). If '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' sent mail to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', I would like sendmail to deliver it to usera's local spool file; Bruce's address should be kept intact. I would guess this is a very straightforward and, what's more important, very common, setup. I'm CCing the list so that, if anybody else besides Alexander has any insight, they can share it with others. If this is not a FAQ or a standard option in sendmail's configuration, somebody (I?) should file a "bug/enhancement" report and/or implement it. Of course, if it is already there, I should just shut up. -- Gonzalo A. Diethelm G. [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Need pppd/PAP guru!
Just recently, I've implemented an ISDN connection to my ISP. However, I've never been able to use more than one of the B channels at a time - i.e. no MPPP. I'm using a Hayes Accura ISDN External TA attached to a Hayes ESP running at 460Kbps. I've only been able to get the connection working using the V.120 protocol. I've been talking with my ISP. They tell me that I won't be able to "bundle" B channels using the V.120 (ATB20) asynchronous protocol and that I'm going to have to use PPP Async-Sync (ATB40) in order to establish a synchronous PPP connection. They tell me that they support this without any problems; however, I'm going to have to use PAP rather than CHAP authentication. The problem here is that I've never used PAP. I've tried many various things to get this working, but I haven't been successful so far. I've been reading the PPP-Howto and the PPP docs; however, they seem to deal mostly with configuring *incoming* PAP authentication and don't get into any great detail on setting up PAP for outgoing PPP connections. I've configured /etc/ppp/pap-secrets as per the PPP-Howto. I think it's now a matter of getting the pppd options right. Right now, in testing, I'm using minicom to establish the connection, doing Ctrl-A Q to exit without reset, and then running: pppd -d -detach /dev/ttyP40 user & This is an example of my /var/log/ppp.log entry for this pppd session: (It's probably pretty broken up due to line lengths) I've included comments as to my understanding of what is happening throughout the log entries Aug 27 14:46:46 sally pppd[13583]: pppd 2.2.0 started by admin, uid 0 Aug 27 14:46:46 sally pppd[13583]: Using interface ppp0 Aug 27 14:46:46 sally pppd[13583]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyP40 Aug 27 14:46:46 sally pppd[13583]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] ^^^ It looks like I'm requesting PAP in the line above, doesn't it? I use this to download my mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] from my remote mail server (mail.strhg1.mi.home.com), specifically I use the "fetchmail" package to do this. The remote server collects the mail there, then, whenever my machine is up, I run fetchmail and the mail is transferred directly to my local machine (I also have a "cron" job that runs fetchmail every 4 hours). When these bindings are more mature, it should be possible to write complete applications in Scheme. * Some common questions regarding the project Why don't you just use/contribute to KDE? KDE is a nice project; they have good hackers working on it and they have done a very good job. Unfortunately, they selected the non-free Qt toolkit as the foundation for the project, which poses legal problems for those desiring to redistribute the software. Why not write a free Qt replacement instead? The KDE project -in its current form- has about 89,000 lines of code, on the other hand, the source code for the Qt library has about 91,000 lines. Qt also forces the programmer to write his code in C++ or Python. Gtk can be used in C, Scheme, Python, C++, Objective-C and Perl. Also, we believe that KDE has some design problems (they have lots of good ideas though) that we plan to fix. Under what license does the GNOME fall? As most GNU software, GNOME application code will be released under the GNU GPL. GNOME specific libraries will be released under the terms of the GNU LGPL. Will you rewrite everything from scratch? No. We will try to reuse the existing code for GNU programs as much as possible, while adhering to the guidelines of the project. Putting nice and consistent user interfaces over all-time favorites will be one of the projects. We plan on reusing code from KDE as well. * Joining the GNOME mailing list: We have created a mailing list for people interested in discussing the development of this project.
