hostname 'linux1' bad. How to correct this??

1998-06-03 Thread Mario Olimpio de Menezes

Hi,

After upgrading to hamm I'm having some troubles to configure my
linux box. My linux is connected to the dept's server (another linux). I
use reserved class C IP number. The conection is ok, but every time I try
to print something, lprng reports:
Get_local_host: hostname 'linux1' bad
What should be the configuration of my pc so that I can have lprng
working?
The hostname command reports linux1. I've attached my hosts and
resolv.conf files.
Some help, please!

auctex not happening

1998-06-03 Thread Mark Phillips

Hi,

I've recently upgraded to hamm. The auctex package installed fine,
but it doesn't seem to start up when I use emacs!

Previously when I loaded a latex document into emacs, it would
automatically go into auctex mode. Now when I do it, it goes into a
non-auctex, tex mode. I can do a M-x latex-mode, but this is a non-auctex
latex mode. Why can't emacs see auctex - what do I have to do to activate
it?

Cheers,

Mark.

Re: nslookup prompt...

1998-06-03 Thread Steve Mayer
That's funny. I don't have a problem issuing nslookup home.netscape.com
on my latest hamm machine.

On the other hand, on an up to date bo machine, I get the same problem
you list (the dropping to the nslookup prompt). Upon further
investigation, nslookup is a symlink to nslookup.sh which seems to be a
wrapper to the host program and not a true binary nslookup.

Sorry if I haven't really been following the thread, but could this be
part of the problem?

Debian has always had this problem. I never checked into this (I only run
debian on my laptop netmonitoring station). nslookup isn't the "normal bind
one". It doens't depen on how you create your data. It just doesn't seem to
parse command lie parameters, or simple ignores them.

New Project: COPYRIGHT HOWTO.

1998-06-03 Thread Jens Ritter

Hallo all,

as a lot of us developers have to deal with copyright problems, I would
like to start this (hopefully) littly project.

I would like to write a COPYRIGHT HOWTO, which might be send to
authors of software, which a) do not state what copyright is
associated with their software and b) who do not use a free (enough)
license.

What should be in there:

1. A discussion what is necessary to constitute a Copyright and
License for a program (Do you have to state copyright in every file,
is a COPYRIGHT file in the top directory enough, is a Copyright line
in an LSM file enough, etc.).

1a. Why to make the effort.

2. A brief discussion of what does "free" mean in the software sense.

2a. Why to make it free.

3. A brief discussion of some of the different licenses.

3a. Some of the licenses.

_4._ Big disclaimer, as we are not lawyers. :-)

As I haven´t got enough knowledge to write this whole thing, I would
like to have some input. Any hints and pointers to web sites are
greatly appreciated. Below is a short list of urls attached, where I
found some information about this theme (and still have to read :-( much).

Feel free to modify the list above.

Maybe you´ve got some other information regarding this, please send
them to [EMAIL PROTECTED], or [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or to
this list)

TIA,

Jens

That has been my experiance...
a demo at a store is one thing... my first PC (as in Intel Based
machine...my machine up until that was an Apple II GS- with a blazin
65816 runnin at 2.6 MHz) was a Packard Bell Pentium 100.

Within 1 month the mouse died...and currently (going on 2 years later)
the keyboard is finiky (not sure if it is the keyboard or
the motherboard connector)

I got to the point of wanting a "bigger system" quickly... I was able
to add RAM...by contorting my hands in odd ways as to make them fit inside the
tiny case (adding a tape drive was even worst)

I found out I could not upgrade the processor as they used a cheap motherboard
that at most supported a Pentium 100 (gee they didn't advertise that)

The system is so weird...it took me an hour to figure out how to open the case
(instructions on how to do that were only included in the "online docs"
which I couldn't get for obvious reasons...it was off!)

I never did get the soundcard to work under linux...and...do you want to run X
on one of their monitors? good luck figuring out what the Hsync and Vsync
frequencies are!
I was able to figure out from the FCC ID who REALLY made the monitor
(what you think Packard Bell makes monitors?) and what its model # really
was...from that I was able to get it to work fine.

It is my personal current policy that I will never again buy a "Name Brand"
system (with the few exceptions being SUN, DEC, SGI.. when I can afford them
...someday)

I have found that with a few careful purchases it is easy to come up witht the
parts to build a system rather cheaply...and it is nice to know
that you are the one who decided to cut the corner and buy
cheap parts...rather than leaving the decision on which parts to spend more on
and which parts to buy cheaply to some company.

(BTW avoid BIOSTAR motherboards...I have run into one that WILL NOT work with
linux...it tested fine with win95 but had IDE errors under linux.)

Encoding multiple files into a MIME message

1998-06-03 Thread Peter S Galbraith
I need to write a script to send multiple files in a single MIME message.

 - mpack: would seem to be the answer, but it will strangely only attach a
   single file.

   Syntax:
mpack -s "Mail Subject line" -d descrip-file.txt file-to-encode address

 - mhn: I can't figure out how mhn works from the shell to encode (but Emacs
   does it!).

 - metasend: the man page appears to say this would workit says:

If more than one file is given, the parts will be com-
bined into a single multipart MIME object.

but I can't get it to include more than a single file either.

Any answers out there in Debian land?

No problem. The problems with large disks came from old BIOS chips, not
Linux, IIRC. This system won't have an old BIOS, I imagine. ;-)

You might have weirdness with the Ultra ATA, depending on what hardware
they use. But if you do, you should be able to run with it disabled, or
patch the kernel to use Ultra. My box works fine though, with no special
changes and a UDMA disk.

FWIW I have often heard people say Dell machines work well with Linux.
They usually don't have the lame WinHardware found on some brands.

It's common knowledge to *never* use a RedHat x.0 version, wait at least until
the x.1. The x.2 is probably fairly solid.

My guess is that Debian 2.0 is going to be more stable than RedHat 5.1, but
that is only from my experience with 4.{0,1,2}.

when I type "Win95" it just blinks and shows the LILO: prompt again. Any

Hey all,

I have kind of a strange situation on my home system.

I have named running for my home network and all lookups and queries run just
fine. The odd part is, if I type 'nslookup ' it then gives me the ">"
prompt. I will enter the address again and it errors out because the system at
is not running a DNS. Almost like it will not assume my linux box
is where I want to query to...

If I simply type 'nslookup' and hit enter to get the ">" and then type in
my Linux box spits the information I wanted originally. My

Why can I not simply type 'nslookup ' and get back what I

mounting remote file systems...

1998-06-03 Thread The . Sage
I recently installed Debian 1.3 and have a few questions. I boot to DOS
and use loadlin to boot Linux. Linux begins its startup and continues
fine (although I do see some notes about no PCI Bios not being
present..how do I skip that check?). Linux mounts my local file systems
fine, then I get the 'mounting remote file systems...' and it just
hangs, until I tried ctrl-c, which continues the bootup. What is
causing this? When going through the modules phase of installation, I
am not choosing anything extra? The only options I selected in that
section were for serial and parallel ports.

On another note, I would like to get sound working. I have a generic SB
compatible. Can support for this be added during initial installation?
If not, what is the easiest way?

And finally, on a 'perfect' installation, would the bootup process
display no errors at all? I mean, can whatever is causing the above PCI
Bios messages to appear be removed without any harm?

p.s. I'm looking to get a good Linux book and was wondering if anyone
has seen/used the Walnut Creek 'Linux The Complete Reference' that is
some 1600+ pages?

Re: Boot to Linux from NT; problem

1998-06-03 Thread John Kloss
I had this problem when I changed my file system on nt from fat to ntfs.
my boatloader line read something like

Linux: ... c:/BOOTSECT.INI

but the actual file was

c:/bootsect.ini

and it wouldn't load because the nt boatloader was looking for the file to
be all caps (which was fine for fat because that was the dos name for the
file). Any way when I changed the line in the boatloader to all lower case
it booted linux. really, it was that simple.

I'm not at my computer right now so I can't check the the boatloader init
file. This was from memory so I hope it's clear.

Boot to Linux from NT; problem

1998-06-03 Thread Gregory Guthrie
I setup my machine with NT and Linux, and followed the instructions in "NT
Loader + Linux mini-HOWTO".

As per their instructions* I used bootpart to make the NT loader adjustments.

When I boot, indeed I get the option for Linux from the NT loader
(boot.ini), which points to the boot file made by bootpart; but NT reports:

  \System32\ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt
please reinstall a copy of this file.

Well, the file is there in /winnt/system32/

Both NT and linux still boot and run fine, only that I can't get the NT to
boot linux (I now boot it from a floppy).

This is a new installation (yesterday), so I doubt it is corrupt. I am
reluctant to do a reinstall of all of NT, and don't know how to refresh
this single file.

Help, or pointers?
Thanks

PC Opinions (was RE: FW: about K6 bug)

1998-06-03 Thread Hogland, Thomas E.
I'd normally agree, but just as a note here, if you get a Dell, Gateway,
Compaq, IBM or NEC you get the same non-standard m/b's (boards with i/o
ports on the m/b and cases custom-made to fit). Packard Bell also switched
to IBM's MWave sound/modem cards, so they actually have a little quality in
them. (I do retail sales and technical support for a living, and most of the
PB complaints are from the 386/486 systems, not the late-model MMX systems.)
My biggest gripe with them is that there's no BIOS reset jumper on most of
them like 'normal' systems, so if you forget a BIOS password or such it's
basically screwed. I usually recommend them as low-cost home PC's, NOT
something your business and income depends on...

umm you can't use windows 95 without at least also using VFAT because

as to being a module. No difference, get make sure your using

Read some install documentation, until you know something about what you
are planning to do. For Debian you can find them at least from www.debian.org.

If you have fast net connection (ISDN or better), you might want to think
about downloading the base floppies and installing the base system from
those and everything else from the net. If you are using modem, then
order a cd for few bucks from ex. cheapbytes or LSL.

That would be very useful. There are a few of us here who have reached
an age where the eyes just don't function like they used to--Linux isn't
just for the students and recent graduates.

The only way I've found is to go to a lower resolution, but that scales
everything, not just the fonts.

That's not really a Debian problem, but a Debian solution would be nice.

Yep, that's about how long that brand will run :)

More seriously, I'd avoid packard bill unless, perhaps, it has been given to

There is a really easy (Debian) way of adding True Type font support to your X
server. All you need to do is to get the xfstt package, create a /var/ttfonts
directory, copy the fonts you would like to have into it, add
FontPath "unix/:7100" to the "Files" Section of your XF86Config file
(/etc/X11/XF86Config) and start the xfstt just a little before X. I did this by
modifying the xfs startup script in /etc/init.d (see atachment). Just copy it
to /etc/init.d and type (as root) update-rc.d xfsFontPath "unix/:7100" tt
defaults
and you should have True Type fonts for Netscape, etc. . In case something does
not work, have a look at the help file I enclosed. Chris

4.2 How are embedded *ttf fonts used?
4.3 How can I help?
4.4 Why the LGPL licence though xfstt is not a library?

-

1.0 What is xfstt?

Xfstt means "X11 Font Server for TT fonts".
TT fonts are generally regarded to be the best scalable
fonts for low resolution devices like displays.

Examples where good scalable fonts improve the visual quality
considerably are netscape(tm), gimp and java(tm).
A fonts.properties file for use with java is provided.

Xfstt is freely available under the LGPL. This basically means:
Use it for free; if you fix bugs you have to contribute the
	fixes to the public.

1.1 How do I test it?

mkdir /usr/ttfonts and put some *ttf fonts there, now run

	make xfstt && make install
	xfstt --sync
	xfstt &
	xset fp+ unix/:7100
	xlsfonts
	xcoral -fn "TTM20_Times New Roman"
	xfontsel -pattern "-*-*-*-*-*-tt-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"
	xset -fp unix/:7100

If your X server cannot handle the unix protocol replace the
unix/:7100 part by inet/127.0.0.1:7100 (assuming the machine
running xfstt has 127.0.0.1 as internet address).

1.2 How do I use it?

Add unix/:7100 to the fontpath in your X11 configuration file.
Start xfstt a few seconds before starting X11.

The font name for a 24 point Arial would be "TTM24_Arial" or
	"-ttf-arial-medium-r-normal-tt-18-240-75-75-p-123-iso8859-1",
whichever of both naming conventions you find more convenient.

Using xfstt's fontpath as the first fontpath is not a good idea:
If the first truetype font would be a symbol/dingbat/wingdings
font, the default font would be very hard to read (it sure looks
	interesting though :-)

-

2.0 It doesn't work! I get something like "bad font path"!

A font server needs a fair chance to offer font services to
clients. If you start the font server and the X server at
the same time there are chances the background app fs doesn't
get a time slice before the X server looks at it's font pa

I suposse that:

You have tested the CDROM works, maybe with another Operating System

If everything is correct, then when the system boots up you should see
that the CDROM is detected.

Do you see that?
Do you see any error message? (There will be some ones that
reports error from devices not installed on your system)

You certainly have choosed a good solution. Linux is an excellent option.

I do not understand very well... I suposse what you are saying:

You don't know wich IO base adress is using your ethernet board

Well, if it's a PCI board you don't need to specify the io base adress,
the Linux module driver will find that for you. Many times these 10/100
boards doesn't autodetect if they are on a 10 or a 100 network. When you
are going to load the module driver you can force the setup of your
network. You should be asked for this parameters in the installation.

It will help us if you also tell us the exact model of your ethernet board
and what is your network topology (10/100, hub or switch or nothing?)

I hope this helps,

I suspect you're setting your MANPATH environment variable. MANPATH
doesn't get set by default, if you want to add a directory, the proper way
is:

export MANPATH=/new/dir/here:`manpath`

PCMCIA problems for Thinkpad

1998-06-03 Thread Jay Barbee
I tried to setup a Debian on a ZIP disk connected to an IBM Thinkpad 750 with
a PCMCIA ethernet credit card adapter. I have installed the latest PCMCIA cs,
and modules (2.0.29) DEB packages.

The card manager detects both the 14.4k modem and Ethernet card, but the
module 8390 has a slew of problems loading (unresolved symbol I believe was
the error, but I don't have the specific list of errors), and then when
pcnet_cs
modules loads it errors out due to the 8390 modules error.

I went back and loaded net/8390.o (instead of pcmcia/8390.o) and I did not get
an error and the module loaded okay, but when I loaded pcnet_cs I still had two
unresolved symbol errors and that module did not load.

I cannot continue my install untill I can mount my CD (via NFS). Everything
seems to work except these two modules. I even get the network link light
now, but I cannot bind it to any protocol agh!

Help!

You can turn a manual into a postscript file with the -t option:

man -t ls > ls.ps

gives you a postscript file with a nicely formatted copy of the ls man
page. If you printer doesn't understand postscript, you can use gs to
convert to your printer's native format, e.g.

man -t ls | gs -q -sDEVICE=laserjet -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -sOutputFile=ls.prn -

(dont't forget the trailing '-').

This should give you a file `ls.prn' that can be printed on a laserjet.

Thanks, but I don't really need a benchmark and the "time" command
does not report what I need.

What I'm searching for is something like vmstat that reports global
CPU usage split by "system/user/idle waiting for io/really idle".

This is for basic system performance tunning, not bechmarking.

Thanks anyway!

It sounds to me that you have hard drive power saving enabled in the bios or
something, this would explain it slowing down after a period of inactivity, and
then speeding up when you system needs to read/write to the drive. Try
disabling the power saving for your hard drives and see if that helps.

keyboard problem in X

Hallo,

I recently edited my .xinitrc to start a few programs when startx is run.
Since then my compose key does not always work in X and I have to run
xkeycaps, restore defaults and then it works again.

Today my scroll_lock indicator stayed on after I ran xkeycaps and I could
not get it of again.

I though xkeycaps was supposed to write a xmodmap file, but that does not
happen when I chose the write-option. I only succeeded in getting a
xmodmap file when I did the following: xkeycaps > xmodmap. Is that normal
behaviour?

You can compile in support for TrueType fonts. Found the code for this at

www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jec/programs/xfsft

I haven't done it yet, but this guy had screen shots of Netscape before
and after and the difference was dramatic. I'm just waiting for hamm to go
stable so that when I switch over I can apply this.

Sorry, but what is a "tcp/ip drive"? Maybe you could explain what you want
to do. If you want to access your linuxbox via the network neighborhood,
you can use samba for this. This will also allow access the other way
round.

There is no easy way to customize X available to the dist to use. This is
a known problem and one that needs attention if Linux is expected to gain
more market share. I don't have a solution for that, but it's an area I
really wish I did have a solution.

This worked great, thanks. It looks like the auto-probe

There are five PPC subarchitectures of Linux:

* CHRP-compliant PowerPC machines
* PCI-based Power Macs
* PReP-compliant PowerPC machines
* Amigas with PowerPC upgrade cards
* 8xx embedded systems PowerPCs

Unfortunately, non-PowerMac PowerPC hardware is either nearly impossible to
find (in the US at least) or expensive. SMP PowerMacs are also expensive.

In any case, Linux doesn't support SMP on a very wide range of PowerPC
hardware.

Thank you, Noah - this makes a lot of sense. I was not aware that the

Accessing html forms...

It's relatively easy to write a program to do this, although you might
need to scroung around for routines to do the "URL Encoding" of the
post data. However:

Perl is your friend. look at the LWP module.

If you can get it, O'Reilly has a "Web Client Programs with Perl" book
that covers this topic.

Re: Q: sbpcd CD-ROM problem

1998-06-03 Thread Bob Nielsen
I found that I had the best results when I compiled the sbpcd driver into
the kernel and eliminated all autoprobing, etc. You will need to edit
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/sbpcd.h, which has sufficient comments to
tell you what is needed.

I had even better results when I replaced my CD-ROM with an IDE unit.

I was on an ethernet at my school, everthing working fine, etc, just
as you described. My school used "dhcp" to assign IP addresses... but
they were always the same, and I let my computer run 24/7, so my IP
was always the same. I used bootp (bootpc) for linux to setup
everything.

Anyway, when I brought my computer home, to use PPP via modem on
occation, I just commented out anything dealing with the ethernet
and/or bootpc in my startup scripts. Then I setup the pon and
/etc/ppp* files, and it's all rock'n'roll now.

I never changed my hostname, so the From: field of my emails and
newsgroup postings always look like they came from my computer when it
was still on the ethernet. I just set "Reply-To: " to the correct
value, and I'm set.

Cheap, lazy... but effective!

hopefully somebody will post a more elegant solution

Apache virtual hosts problem

1998-06-03 Thread Derek Tam
Sorry, don't have the original message, hence the subject change.

Hey, funny. I just started experiencing the same problem with
Apache 1.3, although it was working correctly when I first
implemented it last month. I had set up my regular host, plus
two virtual hosts on top of that.

I looked into the /etc directory to see which config files I
had modified recently. The culprit turned out to be my hosts
file which looked like:

127.0.0.1 oldspot localhost ime.dyn.ml.org oldspot.dyn.ml.org

But ime.dyn.ml.org and oldspot.dyn.ml.org were supposed to be
handled as virtual hosts as well. Apache, thinking all the hosts
were equivalent just served up the first one every time. I removed
the *.dyn.ml.org addresses from /etc/hosts, restarted the apache
daemon and web service once again worked as I had intended.

Could this be your problem also?
Derek

It's an (probably) unnecessary limitation somewhere in the system.

I was able to make a file system on a floppy tape (with mke2fs, I
believe).
When I tried to mount the file system, mount complained that the tape
wasn't a block device.

Given the mke2fs ran without complaining, it didn't see any problem with
treating the floppy tape as a block device. I would guess that mke2fs
or
whatever library or system calls it uses incorrectly assume that a tape
is not a block device.

"rdir" directory graph util for Linux?

1998-06-03 Thread the lone gunman
In my DOS days, I had this program called "rdir." It displayed a
"Relative Directory size" for first level directories off of the
root in the form of a pie graph.

For instance, if I have a 100mb drive, with three directories as
follows: \dos\, 25 MB; \apps\, 50mb; and \util\, 25mb; and I used
"rdir," then I would get a pie graph where \dos\ and \util\ each
occupy 1/4 of the pie, and \apps\ takes up a half-sized slice.

Anyway, it was great when it came time to clean up my harddrive,
because I could see which diretories were the space hogs.

Is there something similar for linux?

Thanks!

1998-06-03 Thread Phlip
Well the install of Debian Linux went well and I've learned quite a bit
but I am having a problem with the keys that change modes in Xwindow.
They have no effect. The combo I use is cntr-alt + or -. Is this
correct? I have Xwindow running pretty darn good but those mode keys
don't do anything. The only combo that works is cntrl-alt-backspace.
That gets me out of Xwindows. I've looked at alot of the documentation
and am using "Running Linux" but so far no help.
Thanks
Paul

Have you checked your /etc/hosts.deny file? For instance, my
/etc/hosts.deny has the line containing "ALL: ALL" to disallow ALL
people from connecting to ALL of my services. The few people I do let
use stuff, I have explicity set in /etc/hosts.allow, for instance a
line that says "ftpd: [EMAIL PROTECTED]" or likewise.

The two mentioned files are for configuring your TCP wrappers, a
program which monitors (and can do more extensive logging, I think)
you inetd services.

Also, do you have a telnet daemon running?

godspeed,
Matt

If at all possible, try to get your hands on the April, 1997 (Issue
36) of _Linux_Journal_ magazine. It has an article contained within,
"A 10-Minute Guide for Using PPP to Connect Linux to the Internet."
This isn't exactly the way Debian sets up PPP by default, but it will
work, and should give you an understanding of Linux/ppp concepts.

good luck,
Matt

As far as I know, the 3dfx is still the only supported 3D card. So
no, Riva128 won't do 3D under Linux. You can now get an accelerated
server for the Riva chip though, if that's news to you.

If you can wait for a few weeks, someone is preparing a Debian package
of the latest release. If you want to do it yourself, head over to
the Enlightenment site (www.enlightment.org?)

Text to Speech?

1998-06-03 Thread Marc Lepage
What are some good text to speech packages for Linux? Assume only a SoundBlaster
for hardware (ie, no dedicated TTS hardware).

I tried Festival, but it seems to pause a tiny bit every few seconds, and
frankly I was hoping for better.

I'm looking for a package that is not just adequate for reading an email, but
suitable for extended listening as a faster rate of speed. That is, of a quality
suitable for a visually impaired person.

I would hope that a PII with a SoundBlaster AWE64 would be up to the task,
especially under Linux. Any suggestions?

Nope, no confusion. The above is HTTP. I've included the perl-script to post.
