For more details see /usr/doc/fetchmail and do a "man fetchmail".

Yes scanners do work on Linux. I am using a Mustek scanner with a Adansys
scsi card and it works great and it is easy to setup using SANE to control
the scanner. Mustek is not what I consider a great scanner but it is the
only one I have set up under Linux. Here is the url for SANE

backing up with tar

1998-09-12 Thread Keith
I would like to know if I am backing up my system correctly. I am using the
following command to backup with tar.

tar -creat -file /dev/st0 /

Then a compare with

tar -compare -v -f /dev/st0

Is this the best way to use tar for backing up to a tape drive.

Re: How to installation linux on win 98

1998-09-12 Thread ken westerback
Having had Win98 and Linux installed on the same disk drive and Win95 and
Linux before that, I feel pretty confident that it works the same in
either case. Once you have isolated Win9x on its own partition, Linux can
pretty much ignore it - except to filch its files if needed.

Considering the main change for hamm is libc6, you are bound to keep
running into this problem. If you want packages from hamm, you'll have to
upgrade. The autoup.sh script does a pretty good job and is pretty much
debugged at this point. You can also use apt to do the upgrade. You're
personal programs should work fine as long as you keep libc5 installed.
Also don't do a partial install, you are bound to get weird core dumps and
seg faults, maybe even corrupted utmp/wtmp files. Either get a cd or
suffer with a long download. Basically, my advice is to do the upgrade or
forget about programs in hamm.

Best of luck,
Brandon

libc5. That is what I do for newer packages.

hamm is the "official" version now. There isn't room on many of the
mirrors to store previous versions, so bo was dropped.

However, from several weeks ago:

Besides pthread library is included with glibc2.0. It is a part of
it. You need to get a glibc2.0.x latest stable version and make required
modifications and compile. But it might broke some other programs ... My
guess. ( i.e. you want redefine signals ??? )

Re: Failure to recompile a system library (pthreads) under Debian 2.0

1998-09-12 Thread swoop

The 1.3.1 is based on libc 5 whereas debian 2.0 is glibc 2.0
(a.k.a libc 6.0 ) . You need to remove all #include
because they now belong to the kernels and therefore should not be
included by developers to maintain portability issues .

I had a similar problem. How I solved it was to remove ALL
emacs packages including setup files. Re-install, being carefull
to install EXACTLY ONE emacs package. You may also install
EXACTLY ONE XEmacs package and get it to work. It appears that
it is quite easy to install more than one version of emacs
without it complaining, but then it will not configure without
complaining. I do not know if this is considered a bug or if
it has been submitted as one. Just know that this is what worked
for me.

Dependency conflicts in dselect

1998-09-12 Thread David Karlin
Hi,
I'm in the process of installing hamm on a new (to my system) hard-drive.
When running dselect, I got a dependency conflict telling me that netbase
recommends netstd.

The problem is that dselect tells me that netstd is no longer available on
my system.

I did the base installation from the base-14 diskette series, and chose the
"standard" installation, however, there _is_ a modem installed in this box,
but the system is not yet configured to use it.

What can I do to solve this dependency conflict?

Thanks,

David

Thanks. I have now included that in the Rationale. Also, there
is a new facility built in, namely:

It allows you to specify a directory with config files, with
separate config files for each subarchitecture (even allows
for different config files for 2386, i486, etc). It is really
neat for people who need to compile kernels for a variety of
 sub architectures.

more installation trouble

1998-09-12 Thread Brian Sheehan
hi,
I solved the problem with INIT, thanks to Miquel van Smoorenburg, and I
reinstalled, this time taking his advice on what partitions I should
have. In total, I have about 2 gigs for linux, and I split it up as
follows. BTW my machine is a standalone pc. :

/50 mb
/usr500mb
/var500mb
swap 64mb
/home c. 900mb

My problem this time comes after the base system has been installed and
the machine has been rebooted, and dselect is used to install the
packages chosen by me (I chose the custom option, and picked all
components for X, admin stuff, most of the developement stuff, the web
things, games). While dselect was unpacking everthing, every so
often I would see an error message whizz by. I didn't quite see what
these messages said, but it was something about 'no room left on block
device'. This made me think that maybe some one of my partitions was too
small (/usr?) but I doubt it - they seem pretty large. Finally, dselect
stopped installing stuff. It exited with 'error status 1' and a message
to the effect that installation had been stopped because there had been
too many errors. Pressing return as prompted I was returned too the
dselect menu of options. I chose configure, but this also would not
operate becuase of too many errors. I then quit dselect.

As I said in my last mail, I installed debian succesfully already on
this machine with the same cd (only 2 partitions last time though - one

Failure to recompile a system library (pthreads) under Debian 2.0

1998-09-12 Thread Martin Weinberg

Folks,

I recently migrated from 1.3.1 to 2.0. I need to recompile the
pthreads library with different signals for compatibility with the
LAM MPI implementation. This worked fine under 1.3.1.

However, now I get large numbers of redefines from *.h inclusions
ending in failure to compile even the first object. I'm using
the original source from the source directory.

I'm sure I'm making some sort of newbie mistake. Can anyone
give me a clue?

Thanks!

Yes, I did finally figure out what that line in /etc/lynx.cfg meant.
Now dwww does not use wwwoffle. The biggest problem was that I had used
the proxy environment variables in the wrong case while _not_ using the
corresponding /etc/lynx.cfg lines.

> should try to reinstall wwwoffle.

Re-configured wwwoffle: Adding a stanza to the "LocalHost" section for
"localhostname" in addition to "localhost" stops wwwoffle from caching the
local documents. I had configured dwww with "localhostname" instead of
"localhost".

Thank you,
Jack

One advantage I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere is in compiling a
kernel for installation on another computer, such as using a fast
machine to compile the kernel for installation on a slower machine.
I've done this by hand and dealing with modules is a big mess. make-kpkg
handles it very nicely as the modules are included in the .deb file.

This was precisely the problem. The EMACSLOADPATH was set in my

Advantages of using make-kpkg
-- -- - -

I have been asked several times about the advantages of using
the kernel-package package over the traditional Linux way of hand
compiling kernels, and I have come up with this list. This is off the
top of my head, I'm sure to have missed points yet. Any additions
 welcomed.

 i) Convenience. I used to compile kernels manually, and it
involved a series of steps to be taken in order;
kernel-package was written to take all the required steps (it
has grown beyond that now, but essentially, that is what it
does). This is especially important to novices: make-kpkg
takes all the steps required to compile a kernel, and
installation of kernels is a snap.
ii) It allows you to keep multiple version of kernel images on
your machine with no fuss.
iii) It has a facility for you to keep multiple flavours of the
same kernel version on your machine (you could have a stable
2.0.33 version, and a 2.0.33 version patched with the latest
drivers, and not worry about contaminating the modules in
/lib/modules)
iv) It knows that some architectures do not have vmlinuz (using
vmlinux instead), and other use zImage rather than bzImage,
and calls the appropriate target, and takes care of moving the
correct file into place.
 v) Several other kernel module packages are hooked into
kernel-package, so one can seamlessly compile, say, pcmcia
modules at the same time as one compiles a kernel, and be
assured that the modules so compiled are compatible.
vi) It enables you to use the package management system to keep
track of the kernels created. Using make-kpkg creates a .deb
file, and dpkg can track it for you. This facilitates the task
of other packages that depend on the kernel packages.
vii) It keeps track of the configuration file for each kernel image
in /boot, which is part of the image package, and hence is
the kernel image and the configuration file are always
together.
viii) It allows to create a package with the headers, or the
sources, also as a deb file, and enables the package
management system to keep track of those (and there are
packages that depend on the package management system being
aware of these packages)
ix) Since the kernel image package is a full fledged Debian
package, it comes with maintainer scripts, which take care of
details like offering to make a boot disk, manipulating
symbolic links in / so that you can make boot loader scripts
static (just refer to the symbolic links, rather than the real
image files; the names of the symbolic links do not change,
but the kernel image file names change with the version)
 x) There is support for the multitudinous sub architectures that
have blossomed under the umbrella of the m68k architecture.
xi) There is support there for optionally applying patches to the
kernel provided as a kernel-patch .deb file, and building a
patched kernel auto-magically, and still retain an UN-patched
kernel source tree

   Disadvantages of using make-kpkg
   - -- - -

  i) This is a cookie cutter approach to compiling kernels, and
there are people who like being close to the bare metal.
ii) This is not how it is done in the non-Debian world. This
flouts tradition. (It has been pointed out, though, that this
 is fast becoming Debian tradition)
iii) It forces you to use fakeroot or sudo or super or be root to
create a kernel image .deb file (this is not as bad as it
 used to be before fakeroot)

For now, you can leave that out - if you won't be using it for a while
then don't compile it in. It only takes 15 minutes on a slow machine, so
doing it again later won't hurt. The manual for your ISDN card will
instruct you on what values to give in the config.

PPA is the parallel port scsi adapter - specifically for support of the
Iomega parallel port Zip drive - you don't need it. The parallel port
support is 'lp' (descended from 'line printer' I beleive).

RAM disks are only useful in certain situations - you probably won't need
them. A RAM disk is a portion of your RAM that the kernel presents to you
as a hard disk - you can read & write files. Its advantage is speed. Its
disadvantage is that you've gotta give up some RAM.

Being out of the Linux world for a while, I can only guess - I think that
is for the internationalization stuff? I compiled my kernel and in the
filesystems section you are asked about internationalization support, and
in the help for that section it mentions that you only really need 2 of
the codepages (for North America and Europe I think?). I chose those 2
that were suggested and got no errors.

After you do the kernel configuration, it is suggested you do 'make dep;
make clean' to correctly set up dependencies, and clean up old object
files so they don't get included. Then I usually use 'make zImage' to
make the kernel. At that point I get a cup of coffee and read the paper
(Pentium 75 - ~17 minutes). Afterwards, I look at my screen to make sure
that it finished ok, then do 'mv /lib/modules/2.0.34
/lib/modules/orig.2.0.34'. Then 'make modules; make modules_install'
does pretty well what it claims to do. At this point you are finished,
so now you take it for a test drive. The kernel is in
/src/linux/arch/i386/boot (correct me if wrong), and called zImage. I
usually test it on a floppy first - take a blank and go 'cat zImage >
/dev/fd0'. Then leave the floppy in and reboot. Watch the startup. and
see how it goes. If it looks ok, then you want to install the new
kernel. Look at /etc/lilo.conf to see where it takes your kernel from
(if you use LILO that is - you most probably do). Either back up the old
one and put the new one in its place, or make /etc/lilo.conf point to
where you want the new one to be. After that, run lilo and *poof* we are
done.

I installed WindowMaker 0.19.2-1 from slink and tried to change the modifier
key to Meta instead of Alt.

Both xkeycaps and xmodmap say my Meta key is mod4, where my Alt key is mod1;
WPrefs also captures my meta-?? keypresses as mod4-??, ok.

I changed all occurences of mod1 with mod4 in ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker
and it isn't working (neither Alt-?? nor Meta-?? nor any other modifier perform
any action); i change it back to mod1 and everything works perfectly (except
commandline completion in Midnight Commander, of course :-| )

Afterstep was handling Meta perfectly, so it seems to be something specific to
WindowMaker...

ippp, ppa, ramdisk (i.e., parameters for kernel compilation)

1998-09-12 Thread Remo Badii
Dear Debianers,

I am about to try my first kernel compilation after a successful
installation of Debian 2.0.
I have a couple of questions, the former not related to the kernel
itself.

1) While selecting/installing isdnutils, I was prompted to enter the
name of whatever (I did not know what that was) and the message
   ended with (ippp0 ippp1 ippp2 ...):
I typed ippp0. Afterwards, I got the message that
/etc/isdn/ipppd.ippp0 is not yet configured. I thought this was all
right since I haven't bought an ISDN card yet and some configuration
must be done by hand (as for gpm, I think), by editing a file.
However, at reboot I also see a new message saying
INIT: /etc/inittab[74]: id field too long (max 4 characters).
Is this a problem with that name ipppd.ippp0 or something else?
2) I'll have to choose kernel compilation options: I am working on an
IBM Thinkpad which will be connected to the rest of the world only
via an ethernet PCMCIA card and an ISDN card, no printer. Do I need
ppa (i.e., something I think is related with the parallel port)?
The boot message about ppa currently says: SPP present, EPP not
   supported, probing 03bc, 0378, 0278 ...
3) Presently, I also get the message:
RAMDISK driver: 16 ramdisks of 4096k size.
I do not know what a ramdisk is (although I can imagine it): do
I need any of them, is that a compilation option?
   I have a 2.1 GB HD, 40 MB ram (probably 64 in the future), and a 40MB
Swap partition (just in case this is relevant to the ramdisk choice).
4) At boot time, I also get the message
Unable to load NLS charset cp437 (nls_cp437): again, I do not know
what that is, but the file is on the disk, together with several
   other ones with analogous names.
5) Finally, kernel-package allegedly makes things easy. If I understand
correctly, I am supposed to rename the directory /etc/modules/2.0.34
to something else since that gets overwritten. Is all the rest
automatic? Where does the new image "go", so that I can correctly
point to it in the new lilo.conf? A sample lilo.conf with the call
to the original kernel and to a custom-made one would be helpful.
I do not see any "fakeroot" on the disk: is the command in the
documentation correct? It ends in kernel-image: do I have to type
"kernel-image" or a fantasy name for the image to be created?
THis is not clear from the README file.

Of course, I am going to finish reading the documentation in the
meantime, but any clarification is well accepted.
Thank you.

that does not work, send the contents of the provider file to the list..

KDE's Kedit and Kview

1998-09-12 Thread Michael Beattie

I know that KDE is still in the development stages, but one small bug that
bugs me is that when using the K file manager to open text, .c or image
files, The respective viewers/editors take the file's path and location to
be seperate arguments. For example, Kedit says "Cant open directory" with
the first two program instances, and then opens the file in the third
instance when passed the filename and path of "/home/userfoo/bar.txt"

The image viewer opens with "%m" and [filename] as available images to
view.

I dont know if anyone understnds what I am describing, I haven't been
motivated enough to ask until today.. Anyway, Is there a temporary fix for
this, or do I have to wait till the next packaged release?

I hope I am not the only one with these problems!

Data such this can be very useful to scientist but the main distribution

What about creating specialized distributions or add-on CDs containing

Well, you could put a line in your lynx.cfg :
no_proxy:localhost,localhostname
where localhostname is your system's hostname.

This would mean that wwwoffle wouldn't be used to access boa. Guess you
should try to reinstal wwwoffle.

Af's handling of attachments

1998-09-12 Thread Johann Spies
I am trying to use afbackup on my pc which is not part of a network
using the following command (resulting in an error):

$ afclient -h localhost -X full_backup /dev/qft0

Error: cannot get the port number of the backup service.

How do I fix that? How do I set up afbackup on a single computer?
According to the Package file's description it is easy. I do not find
it in the documentation.

HOW: server for fetchmail

1998-09-12 Thread BOB'S MAIL

From the Debian~#  prompt I execute fetchmail and get the fiollowing
response:

    fetchmail: no mail servers
have been specified.

From dselect I ran appconfig (I think it was)
and I answered the queries and see my responses in files I have observed with mc
while trying to get the above working.  So from root:

1.  How do I get a server for fetchmail?

Attachments using af

I discovered af tonight and as an emacs user I think it is a promising
program. What I cannot find in the documentation is how to handle
attachments with af.

Does somebody know?

chat quirk or control characters from pppd

1998-09-12 Thread Richard E. Hawkins Esq.

Thanks to a major effort from Jens Jorgensen, who finally found an
error in the FM, I now have ppp running over a modem trough a
moodem pool and telnet server.

I'm now tring to get it to run through the ISN line, which is a
little trickier. I found the BREAK option to use in the script, which
gets me connected to a similar server, but there reaches a point
when, after the second sent message, the other end replies with
"ANSWERED", at which point any key must be hit to bring up the
menu.

It sees this response, recognizes the ANSWERED, and sends "" (just
a blank line).

At this point, it seems to hang, regardless of what I do. It can't
be ppp queries from the other end, since it hasn't connected
to my machine yet. It simply waits for "keys:", which is the end of
the menu prompt (and at this point, the behavior is identical to
the similar modem pool terminal server.

I assume that i can't have started pppd on this end, either. attempting
to duplicate the problem by hand, It doesn't pause at this line.

so how do i figure out why it never sees (or respons to perhaps?) the
keys: prompt?

A computer virus can be said to either 1) trash your hard drive, 2) lock
up your computer, or 3) slow down your computer over time.

Sounds like windows to me.

Well you can read the NET-3-HOWTO on your system, it is a very good guide
to setting up the linux box for networking.

Telnet/ftp come with the base so does smail. You could install apache for
a web server etc...but i would first suggest installing kernel source
because you will need to recompile your kernel to support some networking
aspects, not sure what the default comes with, but you'll need ip
masquarading(?), ip forwarding, firwall and something else support at
least.

HELP: modem and server install

1998-09-12 Thread BOB'S MAIL

I installed Debian 2.0.  I AM NEW.  I don't have my
modem installed some way.  It is a USR Sportster 28.8 internal thing on Com
4 (ttys3 I think). poff works fine as does plog .  pon does not work
because the modem reference is missing.  The narrative
follows.

From the Debian~#  prompt I execute pon and
get the following response:

    /usr/sbin/pppd: In file
/etc/ppp/peers/provider: unrecognized D option '/dev/modem'

From the Debian~#  prompt I execute fetchmail and get the fiollowing
response:

    fetchmail: no mail servers
have been specified.

dselect ran appconfig (Ithink it was) and I
answered the queries and see my responses in files I have observed with mc while
trying to get the above working.  So from root:

1.  How do I get a server for fetchmail?

2.  How do I get the modem installed in the
system?

Compile a kernel.

Include modules for scsi support, parallel port, and ppa.

Check out the Parallel Port Home Page at

Where to start networking my computers

1998-09-12 Thread Lennox Reid
I am trying to network three computers in my home, with my little 386
running linux as the gateway/server/etc. Eventually, the plan is to have
the linux computer access the internet and give the other computers access
so that we use only a single line. It will also be used to allow me to
share files and devices (printers, scanner, etc) between computers without
having to disconnect and reconnect them.

My question is, where do I start? I purchased an inexpensive hub, and a 16
bit ISA "plug'n'play" LinkSys Ethernet card for the 386 (I know it sucks,
and I will probably return it for another). Linux does not recognize it,
and I have no idea how to begin to configure it. Could anyone help a poor,
ignorant, newbie?

Also, I installed the "base" debian system from the floppies, but have not
installed any other packages. What should I install to set up basic
networking? Eventually, I will want to install an e-mail server, a
telnet/ftp server (I think these come with the base system), a web server,
etc.I've seen some of these as packages, but what about the basic original
setup?

Any information on where to start would be appreciated.

Thanks!
