'setxkbmap dvorak' not working
I run unstable; I've seen a few debian-related docs which imply that 'setxkbmap dvorak' and 'setxkbmap us' should work, but both give me an 'Error loading new keyboard description.' A search for dvorak keymaps for x turns up one in the gnome-applets package, and one in the kbd package, neither of which look like they'll make setxkbd work. I'd like to use setxkbd rather than xmodmap and some file I dig up somewhere, or at least know why I can't. Is this an unstable-broken thing? (I didn't see any files that looked useful in stable though). Anybody know how to set up dvorak 'properly' in debian? - Adrian

Re: Why does apt-get want to remove all these packages?
Running apt-get update solved most of the problem. Now it only wants to remove console-apt, which is in stable and has a dummy package in unstable, but not in testing. Where as my system runs testing.

Hi, I have had some trouble with this too. You need might need some oldlibs. The name of the libs are the same, but the libs are not. I do not remember which oldlibs. Debian packages for PLplot 5.0.2 available
Debian packages for the latest stable release of PLplot (5.0.2) are available. The packages work for the Debian potato distribution (2.2). They are available in both the Debian unstable repository and the apt-getable location in the PLplot web site. To upgrade your packages, just add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://plplot.sourceforge.net/resources/debian ./ deb-src http://plplot.sourceforge.net/resources/debian ./ then run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade (or apt-get dist-upgrade if you are upgrading from the 4.99j packages). There are many improvements from version 5.0.1 to 5.0.2, see the announcement at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/plplot. The plplot-doc package contains the full documentation that is now managed with DocBook. You will find there the PLplot manual in the following formats: html, pdf, ps, and info. The html on-line manual is registered with doc-base, so you can easily access it by pointing your browser at http://localhost/dc (supposing that doc-central is installed) and going to section Apps/Math. Also, the plplot-dev package contains man pages for all the PLplot functions in the public API. As usual, report any bugs using the Debian BTS (Bug Tracking System, http://bugs.debian.org), the more convinient way beeing through the command reportbug (available in the Debian package with the same name). I guess you could try taking just the /usr/X11R6/bin/xdvi from the tetex-bin package in unstable (you can extract packages manually with dpkg-deb -x, see the man page), putting that in /usr/local/bin, and seeing if that works. -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I did check with tkmixer, and the video volume control is about 2/3 of the way up. 3. Also the video fram seems to be shifted up about 1/3 of a frame. I'm using 2.2r2 and kernel2.2.18pre21 on a PII 350. Works great now after many reinstalls. I have a Supra Express 56K modem and when I initially set it up using pppconfig I used the 115200 setting. With that setting I was getting time outs a lot with apt-get. I was advised to change it to 57600 (on other distro that I have used I never had to change it from 115200) and that decreased the number of timeouts greatly, but using Netscape I have noticed that the downloads speeds are at 300 to 500 bytes and sometimes faster and it stalls a lot. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you resolve it? Has anyone ever changed the mtu and the mtr to 1472 in the /etc/ppp/options? Would that help? Any help would be appreciated. I installed the latest upgrades fron both testing unstable (not a production system) and there are 2 bits of wierdness that I have not seen before. When I start up my system the sequence is to use gdm to load enlightenment and gnome. When the desktop starts up it now has no panels. Before the last update the panels would try to start then die with a segfault. I filed a bug report and 2 days later a new version appeared. But, Now the panels do not try to start. I tried putting exec gnome-session in .xsession but the panels still did not start. Any ideas?? Thanks! -- We specialize in multi-processor computing systems! John Foster AdVance-Computing Systems

Can't stat /etc/X11/X
I ran xf86config to make a XF86Config-4 (which I knew to do, but I thought setup was supposed to do that for me), but now I'm still getting the Can't stat /etc/X11/X message. I was getting it before, but I thought it was just because X was looking at the wrong configuration file. I know /etc/X11/X is supposed to be a symlink, but to where? Thanks! Ben Pharr

With X4.x it should be a link to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 Hopefully by the time it becomes stable, that package will create the link for you. I had this same problem last week, when I upgraded. Re: starting programs on kdm/startx startup
Since you're running wmaker, try putting the programs in ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/autostart It might work. [Semi-OT] Mixer for OPL3-SA2 sound card?
Hello, recently I've upgraded to 2.4.2 kernel and I no longer can set master volume, bass, treble channels for my OPL3-SA2 sound card. I did RTFM and found out that the new driver implements two mixer devices instead of old one, and most mixer applications support only one mixer. So is there any multiple mixer aware package in Woody? TIA, Laurynas
