I also couldn't get it to work with firebird or mozilla on debian
unstable. Does the plugin show up when you type about:plugins in the
URL box? It doesn't for me.

Maybe this is not what you want, but you could use fetchmail to get
email across your bad link and then run a local smpt and pop server.

fetchmail has an expunge setting where you can specify the number of
messages to fetch before expunging those marked for deletion.

I doubt that outlook express gives you that fine control on what it
does with pop servers - but you never know ;)

I personally just use the emu10k1 module, it sounds good, and works fine

PDC20269 Busy primary channel problem

2004-01-27 Thread Mike Garrison
I'm having a really odd problem with a PDC20269. The primary channel, no
matter what, will also report the drives on it as busy. I've tried
kernel versions 2.6.1, 2.6.2-rc2, and 2.4.24 and the same problem
occurs. The Promise card detects the drives with no problem. The card
has been swapped out, the cables have been switched, the drives have
been changed, and none of this has any effect at all. I'm running debian
testing/unstable.

If there are drives on the primary channel, I run into errors such as
the following:
hdj: set_drive_speed_status: status=0xff { Busy }
hdi: max request size: 128KiB
hdi: status timeout: status=0xff { Busy }

I'm really quite lost as to what the problem may be. I've tried so many
different things I don't know what else to do besides not use the
primary chain.

I've attached my lspci -v ; my dmesg ; and my kernel .config (2.6.2-rc2)

Thanks,
Mike Garrison

How to make a quick local .deb package?

2004-01-27 Thread Abdul Latip
Hi,

I have read "Debian New Maintainers' Guide" and "How Software Producers
Can Distribute Their Products Directly in DEB Format".

Unfortunately, it is not so clear on how to make a local .deb
package. For example, what to do, if there exists a simple
"our-own-script.sh" which is usually in every /usr/local/bin
at the local systems.

1) is there a simpler way to make a .deb package for that script?
2) it should be placed in /usr/bin/, shouldn't it?

thank you,

But doesn't IMAP have more traffic involved than POP3? I mean each
time you connect, it has to check to see what's on the server and
what's on your computer. What would be best is a solution that just
says, "I don't care what you have or don't have, here are some new
messages. Take them. " And once the client has received a message it
is marked as received on the server.

If you are using a 2.4.x Debian kernel image:

apt-get install alsa-modules-`uname -r` alsa-base alsa-utils

That should install the modules to match your running kernel and the
necessary utilities. For configuration information you may want to read
the following web site (long link):

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Creative+Labs&card=Soundblaster+Live&chip=EMU10K1&module=emu10k1#modp

If you're not using a 2.4.x kernel I would highly recommend upgrading to
one before trying to get the SB Live working.

Reread his email. Specifically about what kernel you are using. Is it
2.4.18-bf2.4? What is the output of the following command

grep 8139TOO /boot/config-`uname -r`

Also _please_ don't top-post: You should quote relevant parts of the

I'm not sure about the details of "network install", but you shouldn't
need 7 CDs to install debian. One will do to get you up and running,
and then you can pull whatever packages you need over the net. Also,
I'm suspicious about this "no Internal PCI cards" business. Where is

If money is such an issue and you have some bandwidth, there's no need
for you to buy the CDs. Just download them.

It does. Why do you think otherwise? What card do you need it to
support?

You don't need them anyway. You should be able to get your NIC working
with the net install cd.

Ahh, don't bother buying them. Once you have your NIC working you can
just download and install the packages you want painlessly using
apt-get.

Yes, see http://www.debian.org/ports/ The AMD processors are basically
same as the Intel. Just use the i386 binaries.

I think you have a misunderstanding on how VMWare works. What it does is
create virtual machine inside your host OS (in your case, Linux). It then
creates some virtual devices, like a soundblaster soundcard, a generic
video device etc, which it connects to your real devices. But as far as
hosted OS is concerned, it only sees the virtual devices, which means you
don't get the full potential of your device.

Two ways kernel modules can be installed (or inserted into the
running kernel) using the (1) "modprobe" or (2)"modconf" commands.

(1)
% modprobe 8139too

You can make sure that the 8139too module is installed each time you
boot by adding the the string "8139too" to the file /etc/modules. Just
open up /etc/modules in your favourite editor, or type the following
on the command line

% echo "8139too" >> /etc/modules

(2)
% modconf

and then navigate through the menus to find 8139too (should be in
kernel/drivers/net). If you use this method to install a module,
modconf will automatically append it to /etc/modules, to ensure it is
loaded each time you boot.

Deprecated doesn't mean that it has been removed. From what I can see from
the kernel mailing list, it won't be removed until 2.7.
Anyways, how did you remove devfs? It's not enough to just remove the
devfsd, you also probably have to put something like this in your append
list in lilo.conf:
devfs=nomount

I suspect you hadn't disabled devfs yet.

udev is responsible for creating the device list in 2.6.x. The problem is
that not all the devices have been moved into the sysfs yet. Meaning udev
won't detect them and create the device nodes.

Right now, if you want to remove devfs, it means you want to run your system
in the 'old' way, meaning static device nodes that you create.

I can't figure out how to make sessreg work.
I've tried

#sessreg -d
#sessreg -u /var/run/utmp -d

but nothing happens. Do you think this has anything to do with it:
I use fluxbox with gnome-terminal, and I have gnome-control-center so
"gnome stuff works". Thus I have a dependency on gnome-session, but in
my install scripts I run

#update-alternatives --remove x-session-manager /usr/bin/gnome-session

or else the gnome session stuff runs. I don't have [xgk]dm installed.

Do you think that is causing it?
I have tried running some of the things such as gnome-session-remove but
it says gnome-session isn't running.

I just had a system crash (reiserfs) and after fsck everything comes up
fine but looking at lost+found and as a result at the /etc/rc.d

intended those links to be?, I can disable/enable whatever is

MSI 865GM2-LS or NECPD72874

2004-01-27 Thread Janke Dávid
Hi all!

Does anybody have experience with MSI 865GM2-LS motherboard? I am specially
interested in the onboard LAN which is (according to the msi homepage
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=
453 ) an NECPD72874. I like to use this one under linux but didn't find any
documents about it.
This is a bit strange because MSI usually uses intel lan chips.

Thanks, David

It depends on the chipset your PCI-card is based on. Most cards should
work. My notebooks Intel ethernet pro 100 based internal device is

Yes, AMD processors are compatible with Intel processors, and therfore

networkpackages give error when installing

2004-01-27 Thread Hendrik Wouters
Hi,

I'm trying to install the slapd-package on two different computers, but what I
get is the following error on both system:

hostname: Unknown host
slapd failed to preconfigure, with exit status 1

I get the same error when I install nis (and probably other network-packages).
I've allready checked my hostname in /etc/hostname and it's there. I also
reconfigured my network with the package etherconf and it still doesn't work.
Can someone help me with this? I'm using Debian unstable. Should I downgrade
to testing? Should I mail it to de bug system?
Thank in advance

The full text of the error is:

Your system requires the use of pthreads but the maximum system
allowed stack size of 2052 kB may be too small for some games.
If you experience problems, try rerunning with "-use-pthreads no"

Please take not of the second part. I've been using WineX for some time
now with little, or no, problem related to the above message.

Re: OT - nForce, GeForce and VMWare

2004-01-27 Thread G. Sutton

I'm finally giving VMWare a whirl, and am hoping someone here can help.

VMWare installed okay, and I was able to set up a virtual machine with
Windows-98SE. However, I am unable to get sound working, and am also
having some video issues.
My motherboard uses the nForce-2 chipset, with onboard sound. I was
able to get the nForce Linux drivers up and running, and have sound
outside of VMWare... ^

As for video, I am currently using the driver that comes with VMWare,
VMWare SVGA-2...
>>Like with the nForce drivers, the nVidia drivers for Linux are
working fine...
 ^
What are you trying to do?
I thought I made it pretty clear to anyone who does more than just a
real fast scan through messages what I'm trying to do... I'm trying to
get various nVidia features working on a Windows-98SE _virtual machine_
using VMWare on a Linux system.

It sounds like you might be better off installing Windows XP, or maybe, just maybe
installing Debian since this is a Debian mailing list.
Where in my post did I say I wasn't running Linux? I thought the couple
times I state that I got the various *** nVidia Drivers For Linux *** up
and running made it fairly clear that I _am_ running Linux; Debian Sid
via Knoppix, to be exact; otherwise I would not be subscribed to this
Debian mailing list. And BTW, how could anyone ever be better off
running that POS OS called XP?

Also Direct 3d is a Windows only graphics layer, Whats wrong with using Nvidia
Linux drivers, and OpenGL, do some research, a lot of people have gotten their Nvidia
Chipsets
to work in Linux.
That was not what I was trying to do. As I already said, I have my
hardware working just fine with nVidia's Linux drivers. What I was
attempting to do was get the 3D features working in a VMWare
environment. That is:

Running Windows-98SE as a guest operating system in a VIRTUAL MACHINE on
a Linux system. You do understand what VMWare and virtual machines are,
don't you?

And as mentioned elsewhere in this same thread, I already got the sound
working on the virtual machine, but it looks like the 3D stuff will not
be happening any time soon.

buggs in smartsuite ??
- what is reported by the other SMART sw/ tools ??

see the disk section

if you have cdrom/dvd on the same cable as your hard disks..
- use one drive per cable
( do NOT mix different speed ata drives on the same cable )

if you have "cheap ide cable" .. throw it away
- use 80-conductor cable, less that 18" long

check your kernel options for the disk controller

Yes - Desqview/QEMM wasn't it? I actually wrote an application to run
under DV and had the developer's SDK. It was as I recall pretty good,
although text only as you suggest. Funnily enough I moved house last
month and the DV manuals were among the stuff that didn't make it to

Quarterdeck also announced, maybe even released Desqview-X c1994/5 (?)
which IIRC was an implementation of (part of?) the X protocol on
(gulp) DOS. I had a product brief but don't recall ever seeing the
product.

glibc is called libc6 in Debian. Stable has 2.2.5, and testing and
unstable have 2.3.2.

dpkg -l "libc6"

Stable's version of glibc/libc6 will probably be most compatible - I would
recommend starting there.

I thought this was an interesting exercise, so I created a script for you.

Cut and paste the following into a file called , for instance, "mydf",
make it executable with chmod, and make sure it's in your path. Then you
can call it just like df with any of the df options. The one thing it
doesn't do is join the lines which were split due to the length of the
devfs device name, It would be tedious, but not too hard, to add
that. Anyway, I didn't want to overcomplicate the example.

#!/bin/bash
# Purpose: Convert devfs device names in df output to legacy device names
# Invocation: mydf [DFOPTION]... [FILE]

It looks like there must still be some entries in utmp/wtmp. You may be
able to clear them up with sessreg(1x) - I've never used it before, but
from the man page it looks like it may do the trick.

Tim,

You might want to install discover (apt-get install discover). It does
hardware detection for you and would probably recognize your ethernet
hardware. Or you can as root, do modconf and search for
the /kernel/drivers/net. Once in there, you should hopefully see the 8139too
module. You can then install the module. Once installed via modconf,
everything is set up so that future reboots will load up the 8139too module
automatically.

It does. I, for instance, installed using an internal PCI ethernet card the

There's no charge. Debian is *aggressively* free (and Free). I don't think
the Project objects if you want to donate money, though.

If you check the Debian package site (packages.debian.org) you'll find a
bunch of packages specifically compiled to better support AMD chips,
including my own 1.4 GHz Athlon. Works beautifully.

Welcome to Debian.

SYBASE INSTALLATION

2004-01-27 Thread Horacio Lértora
Hi there,

I would like if someone could give some help (and especially if the
answer is sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

My problem is when i try to install Sybase ASE 12.5.1 (downloaded from
sybase.com) in my Debian Unstable (SID).
When the installation wizard tries to start Adaptive Server, the log
says something like
"kernel current process is infected with (signal) 11".
I started searching the web, and found that Sybase ASE is certified only
for Red Hat and SuSE, as it is explained in
the sybase site. It also says which kernel and glibc version is
required in each case.
My kernel version is 2.4.23-1-686, and i think its newer than the
version required.
But i'm not so sure about the glibc library version. The glibc required
version, i think, is 2.2.4-13+.
I started searching for that library in packages.debian.org but couldnt
find it.

So, my questions are:

Is it possible to run sybase ASE 12.5.1 on debian , or Red Hat is needed?
How can i know the exact glibc version installed on my machine?
Where can i get the required version of glibc for sybase ASE 12.5.1 (and
for debian)?
Can the incorrect glibc version generate the error above mentioned?

i hope someone understands this!!
thanks in advance!
bye

aespipe & encrypted cdroms, not working

2004-01-27 Thread Rodney D. Myers
I'm trying to get aes to encrypt a cdrom, using the following;

yes "" | dd of=test.iso bs=512 count=16

head -c 2880 /dev/random | uuencode -m - | head -n 65 | tail -n 64 | gpg --symmetric
-a | dd of=test.iso conv=notrunc

mkisofs -r /home/rodney/multimedia-graphics/specialty | aespipe -w 10 -K test.iso -O
16 >>test.iso

When this is done, it appears to have created a valid iso image,
but...

But when I attempt to mount this iso image, with the following, I keep
receiving an error message;

sudo mount -t iso9660 test.iso /cdrom -o
loop=/dev/loop0,encryption=AES128,gpgkey=test.iso,offset=8192

sudo mount -t iso9660 test.iso /cdrom -o
loop=/dev/loop0,encryption=AES128,gpgkey=test.iso,offset=8192

I have no idea as to qhat could be wrong.

Any tips and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

man pppd:

persist
Do not exit after a connection is terminated; instead try to reopen
the connection. The maxfail option still has an effect on persistent
connections.

maxfail n
Terminate after n consecutive failed connection attempts. A value of 0
means no limit. The default value is 10.

What are you trying to do?
It sounds like you might be better off installing Windows XP, or maybe, just maybe
installing Debian since this is a Debian mailing list.
Also Direct 3d is a Windows only graphics layer, Whats wrong with using Nvidia
Linux drivers, and OpenGL, do some research, a lot of people have gotten their Nvidia
Chipsets
to work in Linux.

You might also want to post to a VMWare mailing list about your VMware problems.

udf writing in sid

Is it possible to use udf packet writing with the Debian kernel (2.6.0)?

I've installed udftools, but when I run 'pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/cdrom' I
get the message 'open packet device: No such device or address'
(I created the /dev/pkt* devices using 'dpkg-reconfigure udftools')

Hi,
I just bought a no-name USB-to-phone serial cable on eBay, hoping that
it would allow me to use my mobile phone as a modem from Linux.

Jan 27 20:22:11 localhost usb.agent[4020]: kernel driver pl2303 already

The problem is that when I connect my Nokia 3589i phone to it, I'm
unable to communicate with it. I've tried using minicom to send modem
commands directly to the /dev/ttyUSB0 port, but this doesn't do
anything. I've also tried gnokii, the linux Nokia phone manager
program. No luck, the phone's display doesn't even indicate anything.

I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my cable or whether it's a
problem with the software or what I am doing wrong. Any advice would be
greatly appreciated!!

If you are using the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel, I think that support for that
card is compiled in, and you dont have to insert any modules. If you are
using some other kernel, you will need to make sure that you've got that
module compiled (or compiled into your kernel). To see if you have that
module, type:

ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/

and look through the files listed for one called 8139too.o

to install a kernel module, you must switch to root, then type: modprobe

for example: modprobe 8139too

you may need to insert the mii module as well.

good luck!

I've never used it, but I'm guessing you just need to make sure that you
load the driver for your specific network card (and do the network
config correctly).

You dont really need to do a network install unless all you've got are
boot floppies. The first Debian CD in the set all by itself is enough to
give you a usable system. Once you've got that installed you can use apt
to install anything else you might need via your network connection.

Debian (and GNU/Linux in general) can run on any x86 compatible
processor be it AMD, Intel, Cyrix or whatever.

Hope that helps,

CD-R/RW UDF file system on kernel 2.6.x

2004-01-27 Thread Ramasubramanian Ramesh
Hi,

I thought the kernel 2.6 onwards udf writing is standard. Does this mean we still
need udftools
(pktsetup) to actually write? I am asking because the default mount -t udf only mounts
the CD-R/RW
as read only. Rather cumbersome to go through a lot of steps before writing to CD.
Xcdroast is just
as easy/hard.

Also, Xcdroast keeps complaining about not having ide-scsi but only atapi-cd interface
for writing.
However, the ATAPI in kernel 2-6 claims it is as good as ide-scsi. So, now who is
correct? Is the
message in Xcdroast referring to ide-cd support in 2.4 and not 2.6?

Thanks for any insights.

2 questions from debian noob

2004-01-27 Thread Timmy P.
hello,

i was wondering if yall could tell me why the network
install for debian does not support Internal PCI
cards. I do not have a laptop, and can not spare 7
cds to install the os that i have heard so much good
about.

I do plan on buying the cd set...but i wanted to make
sure it worked with my hardware, and i liked it
myself, before i buy it.

My other question, does debian work with AMD
processors? I believe they are intell compatible, but
i can't find them mentioned on the debian site...so i
figured i would ask the list.

Thank you for your help.

pppoe

2004-01-27 Thread Ian Perry

Hi,

I have been asked to set up a box with a pppoe connection to an ISP,
never having used it before.

Does pppoe keep the connection alive automatically, or do I need a
script to redial ?  If so, where can I find one.

Any information or pointers on pitfalls and setting up, other than what
is in the user files, would be helpful.

Thanks

8139too Module

2004-01-27 Thread Timothy Paling
I am somewhat of a newbie to Debian and have managed to sucessfully install
3.0r2 on my Compaq 2104EA laptop.

I am, however, having some issues with getting my Belkin F5D5010 Ethernet

looking at /var/log/syslog when inserting the card).

I am aware that I need to install the 8139too module, however, I'm
completely unsure on how to do this.

Anyhelp or advice would be much appreciated.

authenticating windoze clients

2004-01-27 Thread Alphonse Ogulla
Hi all,
Other than using Samba, what are the other preferred modern methods of
authenticating windoze clients on linux servers.

I'm working on migrating Netware 3.2 users and services to linux and need
basic authentication (user, group, password etc) and controlled access to
shared network resources from windoze clients.

What I have in mind is using NIS or LDAP for authentication and NFS for
network shares but the problem is obtaining free/cheap client software.

Please enlighten based on your experiences.

take a look @ your /etc/mysql/my.cnf file. there should be a username
and randomy generated password specified there that is used by debian
package system to upgrade mysql. I forget what type of permissions it
has, but you could try logging in as that user and attempting to set the
password for the root account. I have no idea if it will work or
not..but its something to try.

networkpackages give error when installing

You _might_ get the above to work using Windows Services for Unix, which is
supposedly free now. However, I think you're probably going to be better off
using samba, perhaps with an LDAP backend.

Thank you.

   # lsof /dev/sr1
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
   kscd1336 mds 10r BLK 11,1 163217 /dev/scd1

I got confused, because nothing really said `sr1'. Even
~/.kde/share/config/kscdrc specifies: /dev/cdrom.

   # ls -l /dev/sr1
   lrwxrwxrwx1 root root4 May 25  2002 /dev/sr1 -> scd1

   # ls -l /dev/scd1
   brw-rw1 root cdrom 11, 1 Nov 30 2000 /dev/scd1

   # ls -l /dev/cdrom
   lrwxrwxrwx1 root root6 Nov 15 18:29 /dev/cdrom -> ./scd1

kscd was sitting in the System Tray, and when I closed it, syslog
bombardment also went away ;<

I am still confused why the logs and console streaming insisted that the
culprit was on /dev/sr1 . . .

Install the lsof package if you don't have it.

Try: lsof /dev/sr1

Tt should give you a clue as to what is opening the device, you may have
to run it as lsof -r /dev/sr1 over a minute or more if the process only
opens /dev/sr1 every now and then. It looks to be something checking

authenticating windoze clients

2004-01-27 Thread Alphonse Ogulla
Hi all,
Other than using Samba, what are the other preferred modern methods of
authenticating windoze clients on linux servers.

I'm working on migrating Netware 3.2 users and services to linux and need
basic authentication (user, group, password etc) and controlled access to
shared network resources from windoze clients.

What I have in mind is using NIS or LDAP for authentication and NFS for
network shares but the problem is obtaining free/cheap client software.

Please enlighten based on your experiences.

[OT] TCP/IP help needed: MTU Discovery

2004-01-27 Thread Bill Moseley
I'm trying to debug some network problems and I'm confused by what I'm
seeing. I'm no networking expert and RFCs often make my head hurt.
Sorry, but this is a bit long, but the question will be:

Should ICMP "Fragmentation needed" messages be returned when sending a
too-large packet with the "Don't Fragment" bit set to zero?

I'm trying to determine at which device a TCP connection is failing.
Basically, who is at fault for the failed connection.

Here's the long Details:

I'm having a problem with SMTP where the client starts off sending small
packets and then sends large (MSS sized) packets. That's normal for
SMTP, of course.

What's happening is (I'm assuming) the large packets are too big for the
network. An ICMP message is sent back indicating this, but the sending
mail client doesn't drop its packet size and instead continues to try
and send the large packets. The connection is finally lost.

It's my basic understanding that the way It should work is:

1) On initial connection smtp server sends back SYN,ACK and includes MSS
size. In this case smtp is sending back MSS=1460.

2) client sends packets with "Don't Fragment" bit set and a payload size
up to the MSS size.

3) a router along the way detects the packet is too big for a segment
and sends back ICMP message saying "Destination unreachable" and
"Fragmentation needed". Included in the ICMP is the "MTU of next hop"
which tells the new MTU size to use (which it can then use to figure out
the MSS payload size).

The above sound correct?

Now comes the confusion:

I've used ethereal on two different mail clients. Outlook and A
Printer/Fax/Scanner all-in-one device that has a network connection and
an smtp client. That device scans the documents like a fax, but then
sends it as a tiff file via smtp.

Outlook mail client:

It has no problem sending messages. It sends packets at the MSS size
(1460) and the packets do indeed have the "Don't Fragment" bit set. An
ICMP packet is returned saying "Fragmentation needed" and then the
Windows outlook client drops it's MSS to 946 and mail is sent without a
problem.

According to Ethereal, the ICMP message shows that the "MTU of next hop"
is zero. I guess that just means the the router has not implemented RFC
1191 and not really a problem. The Windows reduction to 946 seems like
a good guess, perhaps.

Now the all-in-on printer/fax/scanner:

The connection is setup the same way with the smtp server sending
MSS=1460. Unlike outlook, the printer is NOT setting "Don't Fragment"
when sending packets to the smtp server.

The printer sends data fine with small packet sizes (it seems to
send the MIME data one line at a time!). But then it sends a large
packet (1460).

ICMP is returned with "Fragmentation needed" and the smtp machine starts
sending TCP Duplicate ACKs because that large packet did not make it.

But instead of reducing the MSS size, the client (printer/fax) resends
the packet with the same 1460 size. That process continues for a few
attempts and the the printer gives up because it's no longer getting any
ACKs back.

So, I'm not sure if the problem is with the printer/fax device or with
the router sending the ICMP messages.

On one hand the printer/fax mail client is NOT reducing its packet size
after receiving the ICMP message.

On the other hand, the printer/fax client is NOT setting its "Don't
Fragment" bit so it may be expecting that the router will fragment it's
packets if they are too big.

But I don't know the protocols well enough to know the right answer.
So, that's my first question. Is the ICMP message in error since the
"Don't Fragment" bit is not set?

The setup is ADSL modem connected to a D-Link NAT/Switch -- it makes the
pppoe connection and then provides NAT'ed internal LAN. The problem, of
course is the source address for the ICMP message just shows 192.168.0.1
which is the D-Link box. So I have no idea where the ICMP message is
really coming from. Yet another good reason to use Linux as the NAT
device.

I also remember something about ADSL requiring a smaller MTU size. The
printer, of course, has no way to manually adjust the MTU size. Still
another reason to use Linux -- in the iptables rules I believe I could
simple set the reported MSS size at connection to a lower value. The
D-Link DI-714 NAT/switch has no way to adjust the MTU.

Thanks,

This is unresponsible.
"If" and "with most RIPs" and "original branded Adobe".

I force my Co-workers always just to use PS level 1 features. No
compression, always only TIF and EPS, no jpg, no LZW. No
TrueType-Fonts...etc... If they care for my rule - everything works.

If we really need transparencies, we immediately convert the transparent
objects to TIF in Photoshop and use that.

Transparencies do not work in 40% of all cases.

No.
"In the wild" Postscript is heavy device dependant. EPS is not - imagine
you use a Level 3 feature in an EPS and someone has to use this eps on
his Level 1 or 2 printer. It would crash/cancel/not work. So usually
data is converted down to Level 1 if exporting as EPS. When writing ps
it depends on the settings of the software. Some programs allow that for
eps also.

Hell! Nonsense!

There is /nothing/ wrong in a level 1 or 2 RIP. In fact they are the
minority of professional devices. Most companies cannot afford to buy a
new rip every some years.

Those people who use Level 3 features will get in trouble earlier or
later. Level 3 is in common use on quick'n'cheap poster printers etc. -
but nobody is so crazy to buy a new film recorder nowadays. What if you
need film? Or presentation dias? The one I worked with was level 1 and
that's absolutely enough for such stuff.

> BTW, many of the clone RIPS will do transparencies now. But to be
> sure, one should use the more expensive licensed Adobe RIPs.

Customer uses different printing company... or I have to use another one
/quickly/ since mine has trouble... customer tries to use my
"professional" data later in his office workflow and his old printer...
agency bought a new rip for inhouse production ans it is not so
"branded" by adobe...

BTW: We don't have a single level 3 printer in our design agency. And we
aren't that small.

Bye, Ratti

I'm not European, but from my objective viewpoint, they seem to be heading in the
right direction. Why don't you just get your totally unnecessary military bases out of
there. You only went in to Yugoslavia because after the russian withdrawal from east
Germany, there was no more justification to stay on in west Germany (although, I note
you are still there), to maintain a military base on the european continent.

The "opportunity" and "the promise of a better life" are all things of the past in
America. It's true that the U.S. have taken in many from other cultures, it's also
true that it is also the standout hotbed of racism in the world today. There are
reasons for that, other than the insular, parochial educational and political formats
imposed on your population, and obvious in your limited viewpoint. Your national
baseball competition is termed the 'World Series.' When I visit your country, my visa
is stamped with the word 'alien' as if I am not of the same species, perhaps not even
from the same planet. If you look around, you will observe many other symptoms of the
disease, but this will not slow you down in your headlong flight into lunacy.

A U.S. open source advocate that spent some time overseas recently, returned to the
states and noted in his writing that it was fashionable to hate America throughout the
world at the moment. It's not fashion, it is more substantial than that. But clowns
like you that read and believe every word in your tame press will not even pause to
consider why this might be. Why an ever accelerating number of world citizens,
ordinary everyday people, are rapidly taking up this perception. In the not too
distant future, the U.S. is going to be the last bastion of human existence in a world
totally populated otherwise by terrorists, and still you will refuse to consider that
you are going in the wrong direction. All your pathetic faith placed in personalities
like Bush and Cheney, once and still executive figures with Enron and Haliburton,
prime examples in the history of corporate corruption, and still not brought to trial.
I note that Haliburton recently finished its' allocated contract in the restoration of
Iraqi oil reserves. Jobs for the boys.
I note also, in passing, that Iraq possessed 25% of the worlds' oil reserves. I employ
the past tense because it doesn't anymore, does it?

If you've set up a filter to block, or at least divert attachments with
.bat, exe, .pif, etc extensions, it probably won't matter whether
clamscan can detect it or not. Thats what I did for the ISP where I used
to work, and clamav only rarely got a chance to scan anything.

Hi,

Does anyone know why the clamscan in unstable doesn't detect this latest
virus? clamscan in unstable is 0.60-10, the latest clamscan is 0.65. I
would have thought that the freshclam updater would have fetched the updates
regardless of the version number though.

Freshclam is claiming that my virus database is up to date and I've confirmed
that the emails I've received are recognized as viruses by clamscan's online
checker.

I discovered the same thing: Clamscan 0.65 knows about 32000 virii,
including DOOM/SCO virus. But unstable / backported clamav in debian
knows only about 21'000 virii. Did they move their database, or are the
signature geared toward the newest version?
