pb firewire kernel 2.6.25

2008-06-28 Thread Philippe MONROUX

Bonjour,

J'ai voulu essayer d'utiliser kino sous lenny.

Merci

barrettes RAM incompatibles

2008-06-28 Thread antoine
Peut-il y avoir des barrettes RAM incompatibles,
pourtant identiques, sur le même PC ? :

DDR 400 3200B 2 X 184 pins
DDR 400 3200R 2 X 184 pins
DDR 400 3200 2 X 184 pins

Serait-ce la lettre après 3200 : B , R ou rien ?

Les B marchent, mais pas les R.

3200R :
Le PC démarre, aucun message, écran noir
et pas de boot.

merci.

  U = Unbuffered
  rien = sans doute Unbuffered

¿Ahora tienes tiempo libre? ¡Ayuda a traducir Debian!

2008-06-28 Thread Fernando Cerezal

correo l10n-spanish:

http://ddtp.debian.net/ddtss/index.cgi/es

Si hago # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, no logro nada, y si hago # Xorg

Si hago, # modprobe nv, me dice que no existe!

driver nvidia transformou letras em quadros verdes

2008-06-28 Thread Elias Diniz

vez,

- Abrir um terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1);
- Executar: /etc/init.d/gdm stop;
- Executar o driver;

A interface subiu

A DVD usually has two folder in general, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. Google
for these if you want to know the details, but usually you may find only
VIDEO_TS. Conversly, if you have your video data in ./VIDEO_TA, then ./

Yes, it can. That said, whether or not it plays in a DVD player is more a
function of the file creation software than the burning software. So, if you
have files/filesystem images that play in DVD player, the burned DVD will

Yes, genisoimage in debian will create dvd-video iso images which can
then be burnt by wodim. But there is an outstanding bug in genisoimage
that means some standalone players wont play them. My Panasonic DVD

You need to create the dvd-video structure. dvdauthor is the tool from
the command line that does this. Its very simple to get a basic dvd

dvd's.

Try the package (and app) DeVeDe. It only makes simple DVDs, but
does work, and will convert any video type into the correct format.

Good news: there's a check box to indicate if the input format is

Open Source Video Codec and Container (alternative to Xvid)

2008-06-28 Thread Simon Jolle sjolle

Hi Debian users

I am running a forum with small video clips (from YouTube and others). I
convert those Macromedia Flash videos with:

$ mencoder example.flv -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1000:autoaspect
-vf pp=lb -oac mp3lame -lameopts fast:preset=standard -o example.avi

I use mencoder RPM from Dag Wieers

1) Its very generic command line to convert videos. What would you
improve? The size is much bigger than the original FLV :(

2) Is there a real open source format what I should prefer? Can you say
something about its quality?

3) Whats the most painless format for exchanging videos with Win, Mac
and Linux users?

Help with VLC - no longer plays video files

Instead, it only seems to play it as an audio file. The progress bar

am playing *.flv, *.mpg, *.avi, *.wmv etc.

This seems to be a problem between the official and debian-multimedia

It's going to be. The AVI container format isn't suitable for the very
smallest file size, and you're setting a high bit rate.

 something about its quality?

Ogg Theora springs to mind. It's totally free (no patents, no nothing).
Quality is good, but ...

 3) Whats the most painless format for exchanging videos with Win, Mac
 and Linux users?

AVI works, actually. Windows Media Video (WMV) is not open, but it's
playable on all three with the right software. MP4 can be played on all
with the right software and will give you excellent compression. Actually,
FLV is a good choice for web streaming. You can play them locally, if you
can convince your users to install VLC or something.

BTW, I convert FLV to AVI with this command line:

ffmpeg -i filename.flv -sameq filename.avi

You can automate this with:

for i in *.flv ; do ffmpeg -i {} -sameq `basename {} flv`.avi ; done

Using -sameq gives you the same bit rates as the original file. If
desired, you can specify codecs as well, but the default MPEG4 ASP and MP2
works for me. (If size is an issue, force MP3 compression.)

Did you also purge its dependencies and reinstalled from official repos?
I think the relevant dependencies are:
ffmpeg libavcodec51 libavdevice52 libavformat52 libavutil49
libpostproc51 libswscale0

but I would go for every dependency just to be sure. AFAIK, many users
are having the same problem and I think the recommendation from debian
is to use only official packages.

Of course you could also downgrade to last debian-multimedia compatible
version if you have other packages that depend on ffmpeg, libavcodec51
and friends.

project: wired/wireless router

2008-06-28 Thread Gregory Seidman
I have a mini case with a VIA motherboard and CPU. It has an on-board
ethernet port. I'd like to use it as a Linux firewall/NAT router to replace
the (wired only) LinkSys I have now. It only has one PCI slot, but I want
to be able to provide both wired and wireless LAN access. I'm looking for
both hardware suggestions (i.e. a PCI card with both wired and wireless
ethernet that is supported by the kernel in stable) and configuration help.

My requirements are:

1) Wireless is an independent subnet from the wired, and is firewalled from
the wired LAN in the same way as the outside world.

2) Several open ports forwarded to not necessarily the same port on a
machine on the wired LAN (e.g. ports 80, 22, 443).

3) WPA encryption on wireless.

4) UPNP support (wired and wireless).

5) NAT/DHCP support (wired and wireless).

6) Prioritize all wired traffic over wireless.

7) Prioritize all SIP (VoIP) traffic (via wired) over everything else.

Basically, I want my VoIP line to get the best bandwidth available on the
external connection, wired to get priority over wireless, and wireless to
be firewalled from the external interface (no forwarded ports at all,
except UPNP), but wired firewalled from both wireless and external
interfaces (with some forwarded ports). I don't feel the need to run my own
DNS, though, just routing.

Do you have the multimedia repository in your sources.list? If not,
add

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org lenny main

to your sources.list (/etc/apt/sources.list). Then, after
updating, install flashplugin-nonfree. That should work. If not, you

Hi,

Is it a known bug? How could I work it around? though i can use amsn
 instead, but i prefered pidgin.

sorry I cannot really help you, but aMSN (in etch) doesn't work, either
since some days. In the aMSN forum I read that it's not a server issue
but an issue of aMSN itself. Anyhow, something must have changed because
some days ago it did work. The latest SVN version of aMSN should work,
but I didn't try it. So installing aMSN from debian might not fix your
problem. Hope this will be fixed in the etch-package soon. Maybe someone
can make a bugreport, I don't know how/where, and the gnome built-in bug
reporting tool is buggy itself for me.
Maybe you can find a working pidgin or more infos on the pidgin website.

Why do you convert in the first place? Re-encoding files with a lossy

using.

 2) Is there a real open source format what I should prefer? Can you say

AFAIK the only real open source format is Ogg Theora. Which codec

Sure! U do the coding at 1000kb/s
I remember that flv files (from youtube) are about 550Kb/s

try: ffmpeg -i file.flv to view the code

thank you. Really good input!

Most clips even have much lower bitrate

$ ffmpeg -i example.flv
[...]
Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate:
1000.00 (1000/1) - 29.92 (359/12)
Input #0, flv, from 'example.flv':
  Duration: 00:01:03.5, start: 0.00, bitrate: 56 kb/s
  Stream #0.0: Video: flv, yuv420p, 320x240, 29.92 fps(r)
  Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 22050 Hz, mono, 56 kb/s
Must supply at least one output file

and try something like: ffmpeg -i source.flv -b 500k -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag
divx -acodec mp3 -ar 8000k -ab 64k destination.avi

and check size/quality

$ ffmpeg -i example.flv -b 500k -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag divx -acodec mp3 -ar
8000k -ab 64k example.avi

$ du -sh example.*
4.4Mexample.avi
2.5Mexample.flv

With the size I am happy. But the quality is much worse (often it is
jumping to the next frame)

Consider: are your file done for internet stream or local stream? and choose
what you prefer :-)

Not for streaming. Just let other users downloading and archiving.

It's going to be. The AVI container format isn't suitable for the very
smallest file size, and you're setting a high bit rate.

Ogg Theora springs to mind. It's totally free (no patents, no nothing).
Quality is good, but ...

Not the right codec for Mac and Windows users (software not available)?

AVI works, actually. Windows Media Video (WMV) is not open, but it's
playable on all three with the right software. MP4 can be played on all
with the right software and will give you excellent compression. Actually,
FLV is a good choice for web streaming. You can play them locally, if you
can convince your users to install VLC or something.

I don't wish to use FLV because its a proprietary format developed and
maintained by one company. I don't wish to support closed formats.
Streaming is not a requirement for me.

It means AVI is the best choice for out-of-the-box playing on all
platforms and devices?

BTW, I convert FLV to AVI with this command line:

ffmpeg -i filename.flv -sameq filename.avi

You can automate this with:

for i in *.flv ; do ffmpeg -i {} -sameq `basename {} flv`.avi ; done

Using -sameq gives you the same bit rates as the original file. If
desired, you can specify codecs as well, but the default MPEG4 ASP and MP2
works for me. (If size is an issue, force MP3 compression.)

With your command line options the size problem still exists:

$ du -sk test*
10072 test.avi
2464test.flv
10104 test_mp3.avi

As requested I have attached my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files. I'm
attaching the conf and log files which occurred using the nv driver,
although I get the same results (near as I can tell) when using the vga

You can also see that I've disabled glx output and restricted screen
resolution to 1024x768 or lower (non-widescreen resolutions) in the hope
that this might help, but no luck so far.

To keep the message length down I have attached these files instead of
copied the text. Hope this doesn't violate any mailing list etiquette

Haven't gotten the box to recognize the monitor yet, although I did manage

2008-06-28 Thread Jochen Schulz
Simon Jolle sjolle:

AVI is only a container for audio and video content. It can contain
video encoded in many formats (MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264 etc). Just because a
player knows the container format doesn't mean it can decode the
content.

BTW, AVI is obsolete. MP4 (a container format defined in the MPEG4
standard) appears to become the new standard.

So what you're aiming for is to find the right combination of container,
video codec and audio codec. My suggestion would be to use H.264 video
and AAC audio in an MP4 container. If you choose the right settings,
these files should be playable on video iPods and PS3s (and any computer
with current software).

BTW, I convert FLV to AVI with this command line:

  ffmpeg -i filename.flv -sameq filename.avi

This converts to MPEG4 (ffmpeg's default choice, at least on my system)
in an AVI container which is a bad combination:

Thanks for the help so far, everyone.

I have retried using both of the generic drivers. Now I'm
 getting a
fatal server error -- no screens found.
Still not working, but at least it's enough to start me on
 further
  research.

The monitor in question is an Acer 22 lcd, if anyone out
 there has
  any experience with these.

Can you post your xorg.conf and the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

As requested I have attached my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files. I'm
attaching the conf and log files which occurred using the nv driver,
although I get the same results (near as I can tell) when using the
 vga driver.
You can also see that I've disabled glx output and restricted screen
resolution to 1024x768 or lower (non-widescreen resolutions) in the
hope that this might help, but no luck so far.

Ok, the xorg.conf seems ok. Just to be sure anyway, go back to the file
that was created by dpkg-reconfigure, since the modifications didn't
help there's no need for them to be there.

The problem doesn't seem monitor-related. What's the output of 'lspci |
grep VGA'?

And, BTW, you're using etch, right?

To keep the message length down I have attached these files instead of
copied the text. Hope this doesn't violate any mailing list etiquette
 rules.

Haven't gotten the box to recognize the monitor yet, although I did
manage to get the mouse configured correctly thanks to mdetect. Is it
unusual to have to require root privileges to open /dev/psaux ? I
couldn't cat that device file on my usual login, and mdetect could not
discover it without being run as root.

Yes, it's normal. The X server is run as root anyway.

The only difference between theory and practice is that, in theory,
there's no difference between theory and practice.

  Hi,

  Google searching is (still?) primitive.

I would like to know the answer to a simple question:

What are the most recent laptops that run Linux *and* have a working analog
  (RJ-11) modem installed?

  Listed by highest price first.

PS All the searching I have done lead me to believe that they don't exist.
But how do you prove that with Google?

Not strictly an answer to your question, but the Linux Emporium sell a
proper hardware modem in a PCMCIA card, which should work with most
 laptops I'd guess.

They are also readily available on Ebay, for about $10 US including
shipping (to USA). See this list of compatible hardware [0]. I use a
Xircom, which works quite well.
