for the games you can try wine or cedega, wine is in the repositories

But beware, it's not always easy to get Windows games running on Linux.

Fortunately there are also some native Linux versions, like
UnrealTournament, Quake4, Doom3, X2, etc.

About DVD ripping, I have always found the native KDE way easier and
more transparent.
On konqueror you enter dvd:/ (I think) and there you have it ready for
ripping (You must have installed the libdvdcss2 library from the debian
multimedia repo).

As for the games, a question: Has anybody tried playing such a game
(Unreal, etc) under a virtualization engine? Virtualbox for example?

No, there is no replacement for X.org.

Usage of the console should be no problem for such a purist...

Well that is not very broadminded...

And you should, as a programmer, at least have a little knowledge of the
most common programming languages. And knowledge of *all* programming
paradigmas, which would also include declarative languages.

BTW: perl and python are not that hard to learn or read, since their
main purpose was to help sysadmins to get their jobs done. And mostly
they are not programming gurus...

cannot install skype on unstable

2009-06-21 Thread Jonathan Wheelhouse
Hi

I used to have skype installed but I think a recent dist-upgrade got rid
of it (now my wife _really_ wants it back).

/etc/apt/sources.list has
deb http://people.debian.org/~rafael/skype-amd64 ./

# aptitude install skype

produces

The following packages are BROKEN:

The following NEW packages will be installed:

lib32stdc++6{a} lib32z1{a} skype
0 packages upgraded, 8 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 55.8MB of archives. After unpacking 123MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libc6-i386: Breaks: ia32-libs (<= 2.7) but 2.7 is to be installed.
Breaks: ia32-libs-gtk (<= 2.7) but 2.7 is to be installed.
  Breaks: lib32asound2 (<= 1.0.20-2) but 1.0.20-2 is to be
installed.
  Breaks: lib32ncurses5 (<= 5.7+20090523-1) but 5.7+20090523-1 is
to be installed.
  Breaks: lib32z1 (<= 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-13) but 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-13 is
to be installed.

I'm not sure what's going on here; libc6-i386 seems to break the other
libraries; apparently <= 2.7 but 2.7 is to be installed; that's still
OK, isn't it? Less than or equal to 2.7 still matches 2.7 so what's
going on?

1) You are using quite old Ubuntu release 6.06 I guess that means
released in 2006. The package you are looking for is available in
latest release ( 9.04 Jaunty Jackalop - released in April 2009)
Universal repos.

2) Using Debian repos on Ubuntu or vice-versa is discouraged.

3) Since Debian != Ubuntu, you should ask this question on Ubuntu Mailing List.

I'm running standard Debian 2.6.26-1-686 kernel. Neither installation
has sg devices; both have /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info listing both hdd and
hdc. The only difference between them is that the etch one thinks that
hdd:
  Can read MRW: 1
  Can write MRW:1
  Can write RAM:1

Other than this, both files have the same information. What further
investigation should I do?

Hope this helps!

Why on earth would you do that ... sendmail, like any other MTA these

When I do:

# echo "Test" | /usr/lib/sendmail f...@bar.com

the logs show this:

Right... Install sendmail-doc and read
/usr/share/doc/sendmail/sendmail/SECURITY.gz

For improved security, sendmail has been split into two pieces - the
Mail Submission Agent/Program and the Mail Transport Agent.

How can I tell /usr/lib/sendmail to do an MX lookup on bar.com and
connect to that server, instead of connecting to localhost?

You have two basic choices:
1) Allow sendmail daemon to start, things will just work !
2) setup submit.mc in a null-client type setup using a smart host.

I realize my command above has other errors, but if I can solve the
MX-lookup issue, I'm sure I can get everything else working.

There is no MX lookup issue, the issue is not understanding how sendmail
works.

I also realize I'll have to run "sendmail -q -v" regularly (via cron?)
to flush any stuck messages.

Doable, or you can let the default setup just work.

Thanks for pointing out that sun-java6-plugin is now in the repositories

However, installing it doesn't seem to update the plugins, or create an

The same two sequences are repeated a number of times with different
"logical block" and "sector" numbers.

I could not find online documentation as to where they come from or
their syntax - I could be wrong, but stuff like "Sense Key:" reminds me
of scsi messages.

On a hunch, I shutdown the laptop, removed the flash drive, rebooted,
and sure enough they were gone.

I'm guessing, but this looks like the kernel is performing some kind of
sanity check on the device and does not like what it finds.

Just wondering if this might have any relevance to the device slowly but
surely going bad..?

In any case, since this concerns only about half a dozen sectors out of
apparently tens of thousands, at that rate, it looks like the flash
drive will probably outlive its usefulness.

Maybe the problem would eventually turn out to be the verbosity of those
messages filling up the logs.

against which package to report this regression bug: sound does not work in lenny, but work in etch on notebook toshiba satellite a30

2009-06-21 Thread Sergey Spiridonov

Hi all

I have very strange problem with sound. Sound does not work in Debian
Lenny, but works in Debian Etch. Hardware is Toshiba Satellite a30
(lspci in attachment), with sound card ATI Technologies Inc IXP150 AC'97
Audio Controller.

Often the very first time I start playing music after reboot on Debian
Lenny, sound works for certain period of time. Second time xfmedia
hangs, mplayer prints out following in loop:

 [AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:405:(snd_pcm_hw_hwsync)
 SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_HWSYNC failed: Broken pipe

This does not happen in Debian Etch.

My first idea was that this is kernel problem. During boot I got
following suspicious messages (full dmesg is in attachment):

MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
..trying to set up timer (IRQ0) through the 8259A ... failed.
...trying to set up timer as Virtual Wire IRQ... works.
[snip]
atiixp: codec reset timeout
atiixp-modem: no codec available

After some experimenting with kernel boot options, I found out that
sound works with option "acpi=off". Other options, like noapic,

acpi={noirq,strict,force}, pci=noacpi, nolapic_timer do not help.

Using acpi=off is not a very nice solution, because it switches off
other usefull for notebook features.

Suspicious kernel messages mentioned above, appear also with option
"acpi=off".

Installing kernel 2.6.29 (from lenny-backports) does not help.
Additionaly 2.6.29 locks up after some time.

I installed Debian Etch on separate partition and there sound works
without any problem. It work with both 2.6.18 and 2.6.24.

So, I installed kernel 2.6.18 and 2.6.24 from Etch in to the Debian
Lenny (just added etch into sources.list and installed). And this does
not help! I got same sound problems in Debian Lenny with kernels 2.6.18
and 2.6.24 from Etch!

So, it looks like it is not a kernel problem. But I do not know where to
look for a problem now and I do not know against which package should I
report this regression bug.

Please put me on CC when you reply to this message.

Mono - Which Components 2 Install ?

2009-06-21 Thread S. Fishpaste
Hi;

I'm planning on installing Mono in order to develop some .NET Web
Applications. Upon getting Aptitude to show me all the 'mono' packages I'm
confused as to which to intstall. I'm running Stable (Lenny) BTW.

Specifically what's the difference between the following;

p mono-apache-server - ASP.NET backend for mod_mono Apache module
p mono-apache-server2 - ASP.NET backend for mod_mono2 Apache
module

Actually I guess I should just ask what do I need to install to get current
ASP.NET development ability with Postgres ?

Thanks.

And "handbrake" is a neat tool too for dvd ripping. But whatever the
software you will need libdvdcss2 for commercial dvd's.

Both Exim and Postfix have a simple debconf-based configurator .

  dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
  #dpkg-reconfigure postfix

I personally prefer postfix. But Exim is also well-supported here.

Hi, very good idea to switch, even better for Debian. There will be no
problem/limitation regarding multimedia stuff, I use heavily my Debian
workstation for multimedia processing: video editing, digital
photography, music ripping and the like and I have never really suffered
from using Debian (with debian-multimedia.org repository that is).

Regarding windows games, I am not an expert at all, but I have used the
"playonlinux" package (available in "contrib") with is a Wine
"facilitator" (scripts to installed required dll's and such), it could help.

As said by another poster there's commercial solutions especially
dedicated to windows games on Linux, and of course quality games
available directly on Linux. I think www.phoronix.com could be a good
starting point for those matters.

Happy switching !

You can ask for an Etch VM and upgrade it to Lenny. It will probably
still run an older kernel, but this should bring no problems.

Likewise for any "rsync+hardlinks" solution (like rdiff-backup). Except
that you get an incremental backup. Hence it's easier to have more than
one copy.

Restore? cp -a . Or your favorite file manager.

true, but then having a backup without a clearly defined restore

I'm happy to use any MTA that 1) delivers email to anydomain.com using
its MX record, 2) queues mail that it can't send, and 3) doesn't run a
daemon (I don't accept incoming email on these servers).

I had exim4 installed, but it kept telling me "not configured to send
mail to remote hosts" or something.

Postfix will really just work "out of the box"?

You're right! But I explicitly removed exim4 and exim4-base and
did "apt-get install sendmail". Here's what various commands return:

Re: Debian workstation (desktop) solution

2009-06-21 Thread me
Hi,

for dvd ripping you could use dvdrip, this is in the debian multimedia
repositories:

http://debian-multimedia.org/

for the games you can try wine or cedega, wine is in the repositories and
cedega is commercial.

But beware, it's not always easy to get Windows games running on Linux.

Fortunately there are also some native Linux versions, like
UnrealTournament, Quake4, Doom3, X2, etc.

Check out the Wine compatibility database at:

Debian workstation (desktop) solution

2009-06-21 Thread Fred Zinsli
Hello all

I have been usind Debian for some years now, but exclusively as a server
platform.

My partner has a VISTA machine and she is always having problems with it.
No surprises there I guess.

I am wanting to offer her a Debian solution in pace of her windowz
solution but I thought I would ask some questions first.

Apart from the basic web surfing and email stuff I asked her what else she
really must be able to do.

They are:
1. Rip (copy) DVD movies. We copy every single movie we own and only play
the copied movie. This includes copywright movies. I won't get into the
discussion over copying our movies.

2. Play her games. They are all windowz based games like call of duty and
the like.

Can I meet the above requirements in either etch or lenny and if so can
someone please point me to where I can get the information to allow me to
setup the new platform to meet those requirements for her.

Many thanks in advance for any comments.

Regards

Fred

2009-06-21 Thread Allen Kenner

> Are you given any option to view the error report? I'm not familiar enough
> with Gnowe to know about any utility that reports kernel errors.

Sadly no, I thought to do that first, but it doesn't let me actually
view anything. The machine it happens on, is still up and running fine,
I even rebooted to see if anything showed up, but nothing at all, which
makes me wonder why. It's odd to me, that not only does it say it's a
Kernel error, but that I can't view it, and also, that I couldn't find a
thing.

> Have you checked the dmesg output also, soon after the error?

Yup, at first I looked in /var/log/kern, and didn't find anything that
was an error, and so I went to dmesg and looked in there, but again,
even when I saw the error, and checked the time, I looked first at the
time I saw it happen to see if at that moment in time there was
something in the logs, but nothing, so then I looked over all the logs,
and I can't find a thing. It's odd to say the least, because not onyl is
there no log messages showing it, but on top of that, the machine still
works fine... I mean as of right now, I've decided to let it go, since
everything is still working just fine, and I'm trying to more or less
wait until it happens again to see if I can find anything.

Thanks much.

Using Sendmail is probably okay but IMNHO there are better choices.
Would you entertain using a different MTA? If you want a full
internet site mailer then I recommend that you install and use either
Postfix or Exim. I personally prefer Postfix. But in either case you
could simply install and it would solve your problem.

  apt-get install postfix

Answer the debconf questions for an internet site and then you are
set. No other configuration is needed.

> How can I tell /usr/lib/sendmail to do an MX lookup on bar.com and

That question makes me wonder if you really have sendmail installed.
This is pedantic but please double check.

  dpkg -S /usr/sbin/sendmail

Because the behavior reads to me like a different mta program.

If you are simply wanting to forward all of your mail to a mail relay
where it will handle the task then I recommend nullmailer.

  apt-get install nullmailer

If you are not interested in anything but Sendmail then please pardon
the suggestions otherwise.

Unison is the "more complicated than necessary" option here. If all that is
needed is backup, unison is not the best choice.

As far as recommendations go, I would like to say that instead of messing
around with hard links to get an incremental backup solution, I would use
rdiff-backup, which was written for this exact purpose (rsync + hard links).

I'm having some issues with Thunderbird 2.0.21 (OSX and Lenny) and
dbmail. The problem is that when I move mail from one account into the
dbmail account, it fails and prompts me for the account password. When
this happens, it doesn't accept the password, despite supplying the
correct password. I have to restart Thunderbird to get it to work
properly again for this account.

It happens when it's more than a few mails at a time. I have not been
able to determine how many precisely, and it's intermittent. Today it's
not doing it at all. Some days it's doing it for three or more mails,
some days I can move 10 or so at a time.

Has anybody encountered this problem? I've tried the Thunderbird 3 beta
releases, they do the same. KMail doesn't.

Thanks

Sendmail to send mail only, using MX records

2009-06-21 Thread Kelly Jones
I have sendmail installed on etch, but not running as a daemon. When I do:

# echo "Test" | /usr/lib/sendmail f...@bar.com

the logs show this:

Jun 21 11:13:51 debian sendmail[3924]: n5LFDpSS003924: to=...@bar.com,
ctladdr=root (0/0), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay,
pri=30005, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred:
Connection refused by [127.0.0.1]

How can I tell /usr/lib/sendmail to do an MX lookup on bar.com and
connect to that server, instead of connecting to localhost?

I realize my command above has other errors, but if I can solve the
MX-lookup issue, I'm sure I can get everything else working.

I also realize I'll have to run "sendmail -q -v" regularly (via cron?)
to flush any stuck messages.

If the account used for accessing root is compromised it is quite easy
to also get the root password, so this doesn't bring any additional

sun-java is now fully 64 bit, including the plugin, starting with 6-12
maybe, or even one release earlier.
But the icedtea one runs just as well on my machine, it's just seen as
an older version by some websites and Sun java testing page.

First of all you really need to put in a subject. I only look at blank

As to the problem. I have some small experience with Ubuntu, but a lot
with linux in general. I run Debs exclusively. My suggestion is to
either use apt-build if Ubuntu has it to convert the .deb source to your
system. Other & probably the best is to compile from scratch as in "roll
your own".
It is generally a bad idea to mix to Debian variants on the same system,
though I have done it. I have never, & would NEVER try it on a
production system. Too often the dependencies are like a row of dominoes
falling they fork and require other dependencies & so on.

If you can connect to your machine via SMB or HTTP and you can use POP
to retrieve email then we can conclude that the network connection is
working.

In order to test your network connection do the following as root or sudo:

Open a console

1. Check if your network card has been detected
 ifconfig -a
This will list all network cards found. The first wired network card in
Debian is normally "eth0", the second "eth1", etc.

2. Check if your network card has been configured with an IP address.
 ifconfig eth0
You will see something like this;
   Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:86:61:14:d8
   inet addr:192.168.6.217 Bcast:192.168.6.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
   RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
   TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
   collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
   RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
   Memory:fc20-fc22

If you see the above then your card is configured.
If the second line (inet addr:)is missing then it is not.
Since you stated that you can connect to the machine then I think the
network card is configured.

3. Ping tests. This will let you know if the card is working and if you
can connect to other devices on the network.

Loop back test. This tests the functionality of the network card
 ping 127.0.0.1
There show be no errors or data loss.
Use ctrl+c to stop

Assigned IP test. This will test the card with it assigned IP address.
 ping 192.168.6.217
192.168.6.217 is the address you found using "ifconfig eth0"
There should be no errors or data loss.

Ping router: This will test if the machine can connect to your router.
Find out what your router address is. It should be on the same subnet as
your machine. In this example 192.168.6.???. Normally the router is 1.
So in this case...
 ping 192.168.6.1
There should be no errors or data loss.

Also look at /etc/network/interfaces to see the setup of your network cards.

If all the above is OK then your network connection is good.

The next thing to checked is DNS (Domain Name Service/System).

Check to see if you can resolve Internet domain names.
Us the dig command to do this.

 dig www.debian.org

The result should contain at least one answer with the IP address of
www.debian.org. If not then DNS is not configured properly or the DNS
server is not functioning.

First check your DNS settings
 cat /etc/resolve.conf

You should see something like this:
 # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by
resolvconf(8)
 # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
 nameserver 192.168.6.1
 nameserver 4.2.2.1
 search your_domain.prv

You should see at least one nameserver IP address.
If there is none and you are using DHCP then our DHCP server is not
issuing the IP for the DNS server. Problem with DHCP server.

If there are one or more nameservers then first ping then and use them
with dig

 ping 192.168.6.1
 ping 4.2.2.1
Use ctrl-c to stop
should complete with no errors or data loss

Use dig to check them.
 dig @192.168.6.1 www.debian.org
 dig @4.2.2.1 www.debian.org
You should get at least one answer with the resolved IP address of
www.debian.org.

If not then try another DNS server. You can search the Internet for free
DNS servers. 4.2.2.1 is a free DNS server.

Have fun :)

Can you list the plugins in iceweasel, typically, with the _one_line_
command:

find /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/ -name *.so \

Re: DEBIAN REPOSITORIES FOR UBUNTU DAPPER ?

Dear Friends!
I use Ubuntu Dapper Drake (on x86 pc) and wanted to install "isomaster" software package about which I read in a linux magazine. As this package was unavailable in my synaptic package manager with Ubuntu repositories, I downloaded the package from Debian website.

While attempting the installation, I encountered dependency errors. I believe
these errors can be overcome by adding appropriate Debian repositories to the
etc/apt/sources.list file of my Ubuntu OS.

Please

(1) clarify if I can have both Ubuntu repositories and debian repositories
enabled at the same time ?
(2) Do I need any key to access the Debian repositories ?
(3) give me the exact debian package source location lines, that I need to add

repositories without any dependency errors.

sai ram:
Some details of the wording of your questions indicate a serious
misunderstanding of the relationship between Ubuntu and Debian. For each
question there are several terse, and accurate, answers that are also
seriously misleading. Ubuntu and Debian are both more than an operating
system. Each is also an organization of people who have joined together
to achieve common goals. For these two organizations, the goals are
similar, but not identical. For example, neither organization makes any

promise that its software packages will work safely when loaded into a
computer that is running the other OS. And neither collection of people
makes any claim to even know what will happen if you try. A lot
of work goes into packaging each piece of software in the Debian
repository so that the install process fixes all the picky details of
getting that software to install properly *on*a*Debian*host*. Only some

packages, where the maintainer happens to be interested in both Debian
and Ubuntu, are tested in any way for the other OS. And where the
maintainer does work on both OSs, (s)he probably doesn't produce a
single package that simply works on both. Rather (s)he produces a single
set of package construction source code that when run though the package
generation software turns out two different packages, one for Ubuntu and
one for Debian.

So to your questions:
(1) clarify if I can have both Ubuntu repositories and debian
repositories enabled at the same time?
You can have both repositories enabled by having more lines in your
sources.list, some for Debian and some for Ubuntu. It is not difficult,
but it will lead to grief, because you are mistaken in you faith that
the two will work together nicely, and there is nothing that the members
of either community can do to help make it work nicely.

(2) Do I need any key to access the Debian repositories ?
Yes. It is available as a package in the Debian repository. Installing
it might conflict with Ubuntu key installation. I don't know, but I'm
pretty sure both organizations use similar techniques for key
distribution and have given little thought to making the system work
when working on a different OS that plays by the similar rules.

(3) give me the exact debian package source location lines, that I need
to add to my etc/sources.list file, so I can henceforth install packages
from Debian repositories without any dependency errors.

There is a long list of local mirrors of the master Debian repositories
available in the Debian web site (www.debian.org). The easiest way to
find an appropriate Debian repository mirror is to follow the directions
for installing Debian on a separate partition on your computer.

A general remark: I have never worked with Ubuntu, but I have the
impression that a major goal of Ubuntu is to make computer use 'easy'
for non-experts. By contrast, my impression of Debian is that a major
goal of Debian is to make life easier for a sysadmin of a small to
mid-size enterprise, eg a public school system, a small college, a
mid-size business, etc.

Part of making life easier for sysadmins is helping them become more
expert at their job. To this end, the more expert followers of this list
try to give polite answers to questions however ill-formed they seem to
be. In contrast, making things easy for users leads to answers that tend
to hide the real complexity of a situation.

If you really feel that you need to ask questions on this list, it
indicates, to me, that you perceive the answers available here are
somehow more informative than the answers on a corresponding Ubuntu
list. But you can't really validate the answers you get here unless you
have a Debian system on which to test them. So, install Debian in a
separate partition. Continue to use Ubuntu as much as you wish, but
don't mix the two until you are confident that you are expert in both.

But I need the openjdk-6-jre as well because of Azureus/Vuze.

In this case it means: after restarting the browser, the plugin
does not show in about:plugins. And applets do not work; I get an
invitation to click something to download the plugin, but then it
says that there is no appropriate plugin available.

I know that, running Sid, I cannot expect the Moon. But I've had
this problem for 6 months or so now. And I haven't a clue which
package I should file a bug against. This is typically one of
those "inter-package" bugs for which the BTS does not seem to be
very suitable. Perhaps we need a "java task force" (as well as a
"sound task force").

Mixing distributions is a bad idea. If you need more recent versions,
you should consider upgrading to a more recent version of Ubuntu (or
Debian ;)

If you don't want to upgrade your distro, you should pick the package
from a distribution as close from the orignal as possible.
In this situation, http:// packages.ubuntu.com/isomaster says it's from
Hardy.

But again Mixing distributions is a bad idea (Of course, it is
likely to solve your current problem, but it is also likely that you
will face some [compatibility] problems that no one have).

If you're running 64-bit, your choice of plugin is rather restricted. On
my system, I use the icedtea6-plugin. On the other hand, if you want to
run Java applications (e.g. not as a plugin), the sun-java6-jre works
well.

There are also exotic solutions for running 32-bit iceweasel with the
standard java plugins inside a 32-bit chroot, but I've never gone down
that road.

If you're running 32-bit, you'll probably just want the

But the icons appear *BEFORE* kcontrol is installed. In other words,

The JRE package don't provide web browser plugins (to use applet), you
need to install an extra package, which contains the plugin.

"doesn't work" is a bit short.
What did you do (restart the web browser?), What did you test?, what
worked what didn't?
Does the page "about:plugins" lists the plugins?
Did you test http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml ?

If you do not have any restrictions regarding the use of Sun's Java,
just install it's plugin: sun-java6-plugin. It's the one that will give
the best compatibility anyway.

How do I get rid of the caret browing popup in iceape? I found nothing

if you don't want to see the popup again but, checked or not, the popup
keeps coming back.

java

2009-06-21 Thread Jan Willem Stumpel
I just want to install a Java runtime environment which will allow
me to see Java applets in action. It seems I have the choice of
(at least)

default-jre
gcj-4.4-jre
gcj-jre
icedtea-6-jre-cacao
openoffice.org (includes its own jre, apparently)
openjdk-6-jre (required by Azureus/Vuze; it does not seem to
accept other Javas)
sun-java5-jre
sun-java6-jre

Today I did another attempt: rigorously dpkg --purge'd any trace
of any other jre than openjdk-6-jre. It does not have a mozilla
plugin, but "suggests" installing icedtea6-plugin and
sun-java6-fonts. But then sun-java6-fonts wants to install
sun-java6-bin and sun-java6-jre, and "suggests" sun-java6-plugin
and ia32-sun-java6-plugin. And the icedtea6-plugin does not work...

This is dependency hell. Does anybody know of a decent tutorial
for setting up jre, any jre, on Debian? With only one boundary
condition: it should work. I haven't been able to see applets
working for about half a year now.

Regards, Jan

Once n-w-gnome was removed, network-manager itself became
"unnecessary". You can probably reinstall network-manager, but you
won't have the gnome piece to manage it. You'll probably still
automatically connect to your wireless network, though.

I had the same issue yesterday, but caught it, and put
gnome-system-tools and gnome-network admin on hold, and kept
n-m-gnome, etc. Although I usually use Update Manager, whenever it
tells me it needs to do a "Smart Upgrade", I close it and proceed with
aptitude, because sometimes the "smart" upgrade isn't so smart, and
aptitude always tells me exactly what's going on.

Regarding network-manager, after some investigation I found out that
network-manager-gnome was removed because it is now marked as conflicting
with gnome-network-admin. However, I can't seem to remove
gnome-network-admin as gnome core packages depend on it. I'm not sure
how necessary the gnome frontend to n-m was to my setup as I still
didn't figure how to manually connect my wireless.

Any help on this very appreciated, thanks!

The "Netinst CD" has only the bare minimum.

Try with the Lenny CD (not the Netinst CD) and start from there.

hotkeys not working for 'Hello'

Ctrl+Alt+H does not work, should be 'Hello'

Ctrl and Alt keys working, for example the 'Run Konsole' hotkeys is ok

One interesting thing is that in the System settings window the 'tab'

I have also tried to create new shortcuts but that does not work either.

Testing update broke gnome/metacity and network-manager

2009-06-21 Thread Matteo Riva
I just did an automatic update for new packages and I came out of it
with 2 problems:

* network manager stopped working, it gave an error at the end of the
install process then no more icon in the panel and automatic wireless
  detection/connection
* gnome panel now does not make the desktop and windows aware of it (or
most likely metacity does not properly interact with it): the
panels overlap with icons and maximized windows take full screen
  ending up under the panels

Any help please?

[..]

Exactly what I needed..!

I compared the url_handler.sh that I had on the "etch" system with the
"lenny" version and immediately spotted the following:

# lists of programs to be executed - modified CJ 2007/08/10.. trying to
# get elinks to be invoked.

http_prgs="/usr/bin/elinks:VT /usr/bin/x-www-browser:PW ...
https_prgs="/usr/bin/elinks:VT /usr/bin/x-www-browser:PW ...
etc.

I had prepended "/user/bin/elinks:VT" to the defaults for these two
variables.

So basically, this never worked out of the box with the default mailcap
+ debian alternatives.. etc. on the "etch" system either, and since I
couldn't spare the time (then as now) to figure out what the problem
really was and how to fix it cleanly, I took some drastic measures to
get things to work.

Nothing wrong with that since this is an area where I certainly do not
need any kind of flexibility.

What was not quite right with my approach was that "brutally" editing
the code rather than look at some means of keeping track of this
"customization" - via a patch or debian equivalent - was bound to get me
bit sooner of later.. :-)

I copied over my doctored version of the urlview script and everything
now works as desired.

I guess this time I will document it in my "etch → lenny" upgrade notes
and leave it at that.

Thanks,

CJ

Actually, nautilus-cd-burner's README.Debian states:

"This code detects available CD writers by examining files in /proc.
It will try /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info which is created by the 'cdrom'
module, and /proc/scsi/sg/devices which is created by the 'sg'
module. One of these modules must be loaded for nautilus-cd-burner
  to work."

So, check if the appropriate modules are loaded, then have a look on the
kernel side (which Kernel do you use? can you test 2.6.26 or 2.6.30)

Thanks for the ideas Franklin.
This looks like it might open a can of worms ...

First Etch:
hal-find-by-capability finds the DVD-RW drive but does not find the
Plextor CD-RW drive (yet Etch works the CD-RW OK!).

Second Lenny:
hal-find-by-capability finds the Plextor CD-RW, but not the DVD-RW!
With no blank media in the CD-RW, it reports
 " storage.removable.media_available = false (bool)"
With blank media present, it reports
 " storage.removable.media_available = true (bool)"

Exactly what we would hope for I think. But GNOME seems not to recognise
this.
I have just written a CD image under Lenny using wodim. What now?

Re: lp/lpr can't print from cups client

2009-06-21 Thread Todd A. Jacobs
I'm not getting any logs from the local cups-client, but the remote
server is logging the following when I attempt to print (see previous
post):

192.168.101.103 - - [21/Jun/2009:02:20:49 -0700] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 400 0 - -
192.168.101.103 - - [21/Jun/2009:02:20:49 -0700] "POST /printers/hpoj
HTTP/1.1" 400 0 - -

So the server is definitely receiving the communication, and rejecting
it as malformed somehow. That's pretty non-specific, though, and unless
it's a configuration issue then it's definitely a bug that needs to be
filed against the version of cups in stable.

Any ideas about where to go from this point?

Last time I checked was before the upgrade to Lenny. The utilities are
provided by:

cups-client: /usr/bin/lp
cups-bsd: /usr/bin/lpq
cups-bsd: /usr/bin/lpr

and I have the following packages installed:

cups-client/stable uptodate 1.3.8-1+lenny6
cups-bsd/stable uptodate 1.3.8-1+lenny6

None of which really addresses the question of what the error message
means. If I can see the printer in cups, why won't it print? Isn't there
some way to get debugging information out of cups?

$ echo foo | pr | /usr/bin/lp
/usr/bin/lp: Error - scheduler not responding!

$ echo foo | pr | /usr/bin/lp -d hpoj
/usr/bin/lp: Bad Request

The only other thing I can think of is that the cups server on the
remote side is running testing/unstable. Is there a potential mismatch
there, and how would I debug THAT?

Does the machine have access to the global internet? Or is it behind
an air-gap firewall? If it has assess to the internet then simply
installing bind9 might be easiest. The default installation is a
caching nameserver suitable for a standalone machine on the internet.

  apt-get install bind9

In which case you wouldn't need to configure anything at all. Stop
there. You are done.

And even if it does not have internet access, is behind a restrictive
air-gap firwall and must go to an internal nameserver, this is easy to
configure.

Edit /etc/bind/named.conf.options and add a line, with the IP address
of your internal nameserver:

forwarders { 192.168.1.42; 192.168.1.54; };

Delete the section in /etc/bind/named.conf that sets up the top level
nameservers. This is actually optional.

zone "." {
type hint;
file "/etc/bind/db.root";
};

Good luck!

Bob

At a guess? Install 'debianutils' and see if that works.

  sudo apt-get install debianutils

To debug this run:

  bash -x /etc/urlview/url_handler.sh http://www.debian.org/
2>/tmp/url_handler.out

Then look at the shell trace. The script starts out looking for
/usr/bin/sensible-browser and if found launches it in the same
window. But if not found it will try to launch other browsers in a
terminal (started with x-terminal-emulator) if possible. This might
not be the problem but if you don't have debianutils installed then
/usr/bin/sensible-browser won't be found and it will fall back. In
any case looking at the debug of that script should tell the story of
what it is doing.

(3) give me the exact debian package source location lines, that I need to add
to my etc/sources.list file, so I can henceforth install packages from Debian
repositories without any dependency errors.

Following are the contents of my present /etc/apt/sources.list file (if it may
be of any use in suggesting a solution to my problem):
