Lenny - xvinfo: No Adaptors present..
I'm in the last stages of migrating my (mostly legacy) stuff to a newer laptop and cannot get mplayer to work as well as I had hoped on debian lenny. On my previous system with an old ATI Mach64, I specified the XVideo output driver and was getting pretty decent results. On the new system, with a fairly current nvidia video card, and the default ‘nv’ free driver, only the sound appears to work when I stream TV news channels or play .flv videos. The only workaround that I have found so far is to use the ‘sdl’ driver instead of ‘xv’ but the picture is pretty bad and the sound quality is unacceptable. I searched for solutions or a workaround and did not see as much as an explanation. That's how I learned that there is something in X called ‘XVideo’ and that in such circumstances, I should run the ‘xvinfo’ command to help diagnose the problem. Well, here is the output: $ xvinfo X-Video Extension version 2.2 screen #0 no adaptors present I'm not sure whether it's relevant, but oddly, xdpyinfo informs me that: ... number of extensions:30 BIG-REQUESTS Composite DAMAGE ... XTEST XVideo- ... In any event, I ran that same xvinfo command on the old laptop and got about two screenfuls of output for my trouble, one line accurately naming my video card somewhere near the top, followed by many lines of cryptic output. Is this telling me is that the XVideo extension on the new machine is not enabled? I have among other things a Ubuntu 10.10 system on the same laptop and with the proprietary ‘nvidia’ driver, the xvinfo command produces output similar to what I am getting on my former machine. Hoping that this might be a simple case of debian ’lenny’ being too old for my hardware and that I only needed to be patient and the problem would take care of itself, I proceeded to boot into debian ‘squeeze’, but unfortunately, I got the exact same results as on lenny: no video with ‘xv’, very choppy sound with ‘sdl’, and xvinfo outputs the same three messages as above. I am not really keen on installing the ‘nvidia’ driver on the debian systems, but on the other hand, it would be nice to be able to take a quick look at the news and such without having to reboot.. Is this situation to be expected, or is there any way I could get this to work? All apologies if this is a well-known issue and I did not chance upon the solution. If anyone has run into similar problems, maybe they could give me a push in the right direction? How can I enlarge it at my pleasure? How you know how to ask smart questions? http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html All right, I didn't want to be prolix. I understand the sentiment, but you erred on the side of not enough information. By the time your mail got to my MUA, the headers were 3-4 times the size of the message, even with the footer the list appended to it. So, making your message 2-3 times longer wouldn't have significantly increased it's load on anyone's system. It happens that browser caches aren't currently shared between different browsers, generally. So, at the minimum we need to know your browser and version. This happens when I try to catch a streaming video from internet. On my system, while the video is running from the web, it is stored in the directory ~/.mozilla/firefox/garbage/Cache. After it's all stored, I collect it from there and `mv' it at my pleasure. So, we are talking Firefox/Iceweasel here, not a browser I use incredibly often. Now, usually when the file reaches 5.5MB, a new file is created in /tmp and the loading continues there. So the video gets broken into small pieces that I have to search for here and there, which is uncomfortable. That's why I want to know how to get rid of that limit of 5.5MB. Sounds like some pretty Firefox-specific magic. I suggest attempting to find a more Firefox-focused forum and pose your question there. If you are using Iceweasel and the people knowledgeable about Firefox take issue with that, I believe there are Ubuntu Firefox .debs that should be installable (and *uninstallable*) on your Debian system. The vast majority of Iceweasel's user-editable configuration is shared with Firefox; I can't think of any that aren't. Finally, as a work-around there may be some tools / add-ons that may be able to grab the whole file, or at least automatically knit the 5.5MB chunks together. I think I used something called download them all at one time. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. b...@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/\_/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Jan, 2011 schwätzte Adrian Levi so: moin moin, I have the following bash script and it fails at line 14 and 15 (7zparameters= and 7zfilename=) I have tried everything i can think of to get it to work, the answer has to be simple but i can't figure it. 7zparameters='a -si -mhe=on -ppassword -t7z -m0=lzma -mx=9 -mfb=64 -md=32m -ms=on -l' 7zfilename='Daily backup - `date +%a %h %H%M %d-%m-%Y`.$backuplevel.tar.7z' Make sure they're not two lines in your original file as they came across in email to me. For 7zfilename you need to use double-quotes. The double-quotes are needed to use the $backuplevel variable and also in order to use command substitution. Also, I recommend to use $( ) rather than `` for command substitution. The $( ) syntax will also protect the double-quotes being used for the date command. In the date command you should quote the entire format string rather than just the spaces. Less work for you, easier to read for us :). 7zfilename=Daily backup - $(date +%a %h %H%M %d-%m-%Y).$backuplevel.tar.7z tar $tarparameters $backuppath | 7z '$7zparameters' '$7zfilename' You also need double-quotes in order for those variables to expand. ciao, der.hans -- # http://www.LuftHans.com/http://www.LuftHans.com/Classes/ # ABLEconf - 2011Apr02 - CfP 2011Jan22 - Free Software for Free Enterprise # I never let schooling get in the way of my education. -- Mark Twain

IE: /dev/md0 to /dev/126 and /dev/md1 became md127. Something else must have happened too. Because normally just adding arrays will not rename the existing arrays. I am not familiar with the Disk Utility that you mention. Next time instead you might just use mdadm directly. It really is quite easy to create new arrays using it. Here is an example that will create a new device /dev/md9 mirrored from two other devices /dev/sdy5 and /dev/sdz5. mdadm --create /dev/md9 --level=mirror --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdy5 /dev/sdz5 Strangely the md2 array which I setup on the added drives remains as /dev/md2. My root partition is/was on /dev/md0. The result is that Grub2 fails to boot the / array. You may have to boot a rescue cd. I recommend booting the Debian install disk in rescue mode. Then you can inspect and fix the problem. But as of yet you haven't said enough to let us know what the problem might be yet. I have tried three REINSTALLING GRUB procedures from Sysresccd online docs and many others GNU.org, Ubuntu etc. This isn't encouraging. I can tell that you are grasping at straws. You have my sympathy. But unfortunately that doesn't help diagnose the problem. Remain calm. And repeat exactly the problem that you are seeing and the steps you have taken to correct it. The errors occur when I try to mount the partition with the /boot directory. 'Complains about file system type 'linux_raid_member' I haven't seen that error before. Maybe someone else will recognize it. I don't understand why you would get an error mounting /boot that would prevent the system from coming online. Because by the time the system has booted enough to mount /boot it has already practically booted completely. The system doesn't actually need /boot mounted to boot. Grub reads the files from /boot and sets things in motion and then /etc/fstab instructs the system to mount /boot. Usually when the root device cannot be assembled the error I see is that the system is Waiting for root filesystem and can eventually get to a recovery shell prompt. This machine has worked for 3 years flawlessly.. Can anyone help with this? Or point me to a place or link to get this fixed. Google doesn't help... I can't find a article/posting where it ended successfully. I have considered a full reinstall after Squeeze goes stable, since this O/S is a crufty upgrade from sarge over time. But useless now.. The partitions for raid volumes should be 'autodetect' 0xFD. This will enable mdadm to assemble then into raid at boot time. You can inspect the raid partitions with --detail and --examine. mdadm --examine /dev/sda1 mdadm --detail /dev/md0 That will list information about the devices. Replace with your own series of devices. I would boot a rescue image and then inspect the current configuration using the above commands. Hopefully that will show something wrong that can be fixed after you know what it is. A couple of other hints: If you are not booting a rescue system but using something like a live boot then you may need to load the kernel modules manually. You may need to load the dm_mod and md_mod modules. modprobe md_mod You might get useful information from looking at the /proc/mdstat status. cat /proc/mdstat There is a configuration file /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf that holds the UUIDs of the configured devices. If those have become corrupted then mdadm won't be able to assemble the /dev/md* devices. Check that file and compare against what you see with the --detail output. The initrd contains a copy of the mdadm.conf file with the components needed to assemble the root filesystem. If the UUIDs change over what is recorded in the initrd then the initrd will need to be rebuilt. To do that make sure that the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file is correct and then reconfigure the kernel with dpkg-reconfigure. dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.32-5-i686 Good luck! Re: OT: Re: Help with a bash script please
No real help here, just some general comments. First, don't cd in a script. Use full paths - this includes defining paths to your programs (if you or someone else put a different program with the same name that is found earlier in your path, your script is liable to cause a big mess). Bash is nice and real powerful. However, when my bash scripts grow beyond a few lines, I evaluate my my sanity and use something more along the lines of programming (perl is my language of choice but some like python or ruby). BTW, my reasoning behind using something else when scripts get too big is: 1. Style - shell scripts look ugly as hell, 2. Speed - running all of those individual programs isn't very fast, 3. Functionality - I can do ten times more in three lines of perl than you can do in ten lines of bash. Etc, etc, etc.

On the new system, with a fairly current nvidia video card, and the default ‘nv’ free driver, only the sound appears to work when I stream TV news channels or play .flv videos. The problem is that a) fairly current hardware may generally not work very well with a relatively old system (Lenny's kernel and the nv driver are from mid-2008), and b) the nv driver does not support the XVideo extension on GeForce 8 and newer. Which video driver do you use? In other words, should I expect failure with the xvinfo output I am getting, or should I just ignore it? I am not really keen on installing the ‘nvidia’ driver on the debian systems, but on the other hand, it would be nice to be able to take a quick look at the news and such without having to reboot.. The closed source driver for nvidia works quite well under my lenny systems, I have no complaints (easy to install and very stable). I only have it installed on systems where I need additional capabilities that nv driver cannot provide. I innocently thought I wouldn't need any ‘additional capabilities’.. just watching the news once in a while.. no fancy 3D gaming or such like.. And since the ‘nvidia’ driver that comes with lenny does not support my card, I figured installing it was both unnecesssary and asking for trouble. cj -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
