Unison hangs on copy
Today, I lost the ability to synchronize between two machines, one had lenny until today morning, and the other was sid. I was using apt-pinning to keep both unison versions compatible. Yesterday night I was able to sync both machines for the last time. Then, today morning, I was not. It connects to the server, it recognizes the changes, and it offers me all the changes for approval. Then, when it has to start copying, it just waits for ever, and no progress is done. Last weekend I upgraded the sid machine, so I thought that could be the problem. I decided to upgrade the lenny machine to squeeze, just in case. Nothing. I have unison version 2.32.52 in both. So, basically, I don't know what to do know. I haven't found ideas in google or Debian Bugs, only problems like hanging when contacting server and such, but not after going through all the stages before actually copying. Any ideas? disable fbcon in Debian Wheezy (Live)?
How do I disable fbcon in Debian Wheezy? I'm using a custom Debian Live image, and it switches to fbcon as soon as it can get to the modules! I've Google'd a bit, but the virtually the only recommendation I've found is to add fbcon=map:9 to the kernel command line. Unfortunately, instead of leaving the VGA console alone, it apparently completely deactivates it (the display enters a power saving mode.) As a work-around, I can boot with "emergency", and remove /lib/modules/2.6.39-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/{gpu,video}/. Yet, I'd prefer for a less radical solution. (And I wonder, what process launches modprobe(8) on these modules, and is there a way to disable it?) pppoeconf can't find new Verizon DSL modem
We subscribed to Verizon DSL ten years ago. Overall the service has been as advertised, 3 Mbps. All last week we had major problems - system freezes and system down for times ranging from half an hour to several hours. Tech support finally conceded the problem was outside our house. Apparently this was corrected as this Wednesday performance returned to normal. Yesterday a Verizon technician came to the house and confirmed a good connection at the wall outlet dedicated to the dsl modem. He also brought a new Verizon dsl modem noting that the ten year old modem from the original installation was slowly failing. He proceeded to configure it from his laptop and set the user name and password. I now realize it was a mistake to let him do this. We have a dedicated firewall computer between the dsl modem and our lan. pppoeconf run from the firewall computer finds (found) the access accumulator and allows us to set the user name and password. When the new modem is put in place of the ten year old modem this does not work even when the new modem is reset to the factory defaults. Fortunately everything still works with the old modem an since the external problems have been fixed it seems steady as a rock. Still it may be true that the old modem is gradually failing so it seems prudent to replace it but not if pppoeconf cannot find the new modem. Then log-in setup Nepumok, Strigi, Kaboom and whoops, it all vanishes when you log out :-( I suspect the OP wants to avoid a home directory if possible - not put it somewhere, um, non-standard. Which is possible - shell as /bin/false, home as /usr/sbin/connect_internet_and_email_the_IP, primary group nobody, other groups dip and dial - but not easily from a kdm login. Making fixme the preselected username with the focus on password and login without password allowed is simple - finding a simple way to secure that setup is harder. > - Set the shell for fixme to your script. Which won't run the script.. I am working on something similar - hence the script, please post your success here. PEBKAC. I needed the device name and couldn't sort it out. The tail command in dmesg gave me the device name. Unfortunately I still couldn't mount it. I suspect more PEBKAC given the amount of sleep that I have had recently! I have solved the problem for now with a little lateral thinking. I took the memory card out of the device and put it in a card reader. I have now copied two more books (audio files of) for a very long train journey. Life was definitely easier when I could read actual books, but I do now have the advantage of being able to "read" and watch the scenery go by at the same time. :-) I'll come back to this when I get back next weekend. Having once had it mounted, albeit by accident, I know it can be done. So any further ideas you have will be very gratefully received, but not acted on for 9 days! I couldn't agree more. This happened in the first week of a four-week contract so I said that the obvious solution was to create a reverse zone and everyone told me to shut up. We just edited "nsswitch.conf" and removed "dns" from the "hosts" line. TOTALLY OT: As far as the senior Windows sysadmin was concerned, it was the problem of "toy OSs" and he wasn't willing to set up a reverse zone for Solaris and Linux. He was very good as a Windows admin and had the full backing of the IT manager and deputy IT manager. The two Solaris/Linux admins owed their jobs to the managers (one was Sun hardware engineer and a friend of the deputy manager and the other was a Windows admin and friend of the manager; they were sent on Solaris training and given these jobs; on my first day there, a desktop support guy asked them what the difference between a soft and a hard link was and they couldn't answer). It allows normal, differential and incremental backups, scheduled backups, etc... The only drawback is that it uses a proprietary format and generated files can be only read by windows systems. In the past I used Areca Backup¹ (it's java based, it works on both, windows and linux systems) and there is also Cobian² Backup for Windows, which seems to be very popular for that OS. There can be problems with the firmware with some of these units (I remember about LG devices that came with the "bluebirds" utility embedded on it that caused problems in linux systems) but as per the above errors I would think it's a kind of hardware related issue (either change the IDE cable with a new one and/or remove the optical unit to use it with an external enclosure to connect it via USB port. /run pointing to /var/run instead of the opposite
Hi. I'm running Debian unstable, and I have a chroot environment where I have another Debian unstable installation. Today I've updated the chroot environment because it was very dated, and I've noticed that /run is a symbolic link pointing to /var/run, instead of the other way round: In the chroot: $ file /run /var/run/ /run: symbolic link to `/var/run' /var/run/: directory In the true system: $ file /run/ /var/run /run/:directory /var/run: symbolic link to `/run' I think I can do the changes myself by hand, but I wonder if it will be appropriate (maybe is that way for a reason), or if I have hit a bug that I should report. I need to change it because I need an application in the chroot to connect to CUPS from outside the chroot, and this is done through a socket on (/var)/run/cups. And schroot can't do the bind mount if the chroot /run is a link. It's probably not the right one for the kernel you're running. Make sure you have the appropriate kernel header packages installed, then try 'dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-kernel-dkms'. Does it show up when trying to mount it gives you the error message that it's already mounted? If it does, I'd wonder why it's already mounted. I have CONFIG_DEBUG_FS=y on the kernel config file in /boot so I guess it's configured. I just discovered, by watching fstab, that I had modified this to try to use the Switcheroo mechanism (switching GPU's), like this: none/sys/kernel/debug debugfs defaults0 0 which I'm not using because I came to the conclusion it wasn't fitted to my machine. So I guess this wouldn't allow use debugfs. I umount'd and now I could mount it as instructed. Did you install intel_gpu_dump by downloading it or by installing the package intel-gpu-tools? Did it write something to intel_gpu_dump.txt? I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg using synaptics package manager and it asked to install intel-gpu-tools as a dependency. It didn't write anything after the freeze. I'll interrupt this writing here to trigger the bug again and use intel_gpu_dump to see what happens. So, I changed fstab, reboot, mounted debugfs, triggered the freeze, accessed by ssh and sudo intel_gpu_dump which produced the same error as before. Looked at dmesg, Xorg.0.log and /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state and saw nothing relevant there. Furthermore, I looked at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze which says that a backtrace on Xorg.0.log is a non-symptom because this isn't an X crash. So, I guess the debugging xserver won't give any results. So, I guess the only thing that could give us information is intel_gpu_dump which I'm still not able to launch. Any idea how to do it? Anyway, I had already reported the bug as #635039 but I wanted give some more information, which I still can't. Personally, I'd close all the unnecessary applications and all the X sessions, log in at the text VT (usually, Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Alt-F2 switch to one), and carefully examine the list of my running processes with $ ps x. If there's anything that looks like it has entered an infinite loop, or otherwise suspicious, I'd kill it with $ kill (and if it doesn't respond, with $ kill -9.) I have to kill -9 the bind manually, so the shutdown process can continue. Is this is common feature, or there something wrong with my systems? signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

While you may have removed the /filenames/, the files may still persist, if opened by a process. Personally, I'd close all the unnecessary applications and all the X sessions, log in at the text VT (usually, Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Alt-F2 switch to one), and carefully examine the list of my running processes with $ ps x. If there's anything that looks like it has entered an infinite loop, or otherwise suspicious, I'd kill it with $ kill (and if it doesn't respond, with $ kill -9.) -- FSF associate member #7257 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". If you're willing to learn sieve scripting instead of maildrop, dovecot can do the filtering for you. This page[1] shows how to configure the plugin. This should save you having to add another step to your chain and means you don't have to touch your postfix configuration. But first of all, there's a precondition: there must be an LVM volume group with enough spare space for a new system. Also, it helps if the user (/home) and system (/, /boot, /usr, /var, etc.) directories are on distinct filesystems. (Both of those hold for virtually any system under my control.) Given that the above holds, I'd create new LVM logical volumes for the new system, e. g.: # vg=vgmysystem # lvcreate -L 256M -n lvroot64 "$vg" # lvcreate -L 4G -n lvusr64 "$vg" # lvcreate -L 4G -n lvvar64 "$vg" # Then, I'd create the filesystems on these new volumes, say: # mke2fs -j -E resize=1G /dev/"$vg"/lvroot64 … # mke2fs -j -E resize=8G /dev/"$vg"/lvusr64 … # mke2fs -j -E resize=64G /dev/"$vg"/lvvar64 … # and mount these filesystems, and also tmpfs, to /mnt, e. g.: # mount /dev/"$vg"/lvroot64 /mnt # mkdir -- /mnt/usr /mnt/var # install -d -m 01777 -- /mnt/tmp # mount /dev/"$vg"/lvusr64 /mnt/usr # mount /dev/"$vg"/lvvar64 /mnt/var # mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /mnt/tmp # (I assume that both the old and the new system will share the same /home, but /home isn't needed at this time.) Finally, I'd debootstrap(8) the amd64 system into /mnt (I assume that the i386 host system is used along with the amd64 kernel), make all the necessary changes to /etc, chroot(8) to /mnt to test the new setup, and then add the necessary bits to the GRUB configuration. After the above is done, I could boot either of the systems. And if anything fails badly with one, I could still use the other (e. g., for recovery.) BTW, “rescue” or, say, “newstable”, OS versions may be installed essentially the same way. -- FSF associate member #7257 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Postfix and virtual_transport = maildrop
Hello -- I need some help in here :-/ I have a Debian-box well configured with Postfix+saslauthd+dovecot+spamassassin. Mail accounts are virtual, with password stored into MySQL and messages store into /home/vmail. I would like introduce maildrop in delivery chain, basically for move spam messages into proper .Junk account folder, but it's not so easy as I expected. I followed logic steps of this HOWTO (Maildrop section) http://dertompson.com/2008/02/13/mail-server-setup-for-debian-etch but if I set virtual_transport = maildrop in /etc/postfix/main.cf, messages are not delivered and log returns those errors: Jun 29 23:57:21 example postfix/pipe[28200]: 449B22548191: to=, relay=spamassassin, delay=0.16, delays=0.05/0/0/0.11, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered via spamassassin service) Jun 29 23:57:21 example postfix/error[28168]: 69FCB25481B2: to=, relay=none, delay=0.01, delays=0/0/0/0, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (unknown mail transport error) in short: relay=none (unknown mail transport error) If I use procmail --as a shot, because it doesn't works with virtual accounts-- instead maildrop, I obtain the same error.
