-- @chinabhz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-portuguese-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. So the service can be started fine once you're in. How weird :-? If this is not working for you then you may be facing a different issue unrelated to having a separated /var partition :-? On rebooting I see a console message Starting bootlogger - bootlog failed' and does not not add any boot data to the bootlog file. Mmm, what could be preventing bootlogd from starting at booting? As per the init file, it only requires mountdevsubfs facility to be available. And there is something that worries me... By looking at the init script it can be read: # Because bootlogd is broken on some systems, we take the special measure # of requiring it to be enabled by setting an environment variable. I wonder what characteristics present those systems where bootlogd is known to be broken :-? As you say the problem seems to be unrelated to /var on a different partition. The logger seems to be basically working but failing to start up for some reason. Yes, and that sounds even weirder, I mean, that can be launched on a running system but fails when loading. Only Windows system lacks for a ssh client on a default install and this can be easily solved with one of the mentioned programs that don't require even installation at all because they're portable. I was writing it with Windows in mind indeed. Solaris and Linux both have good ssh clients available from the usual repositories. I'm well aware of that, thank you. If it doesn't play nicely with the system, then yes. There's no explorer extension to work with SFTP - that's enough for me. Shell integration on the window client is not a powerful argument for dropping the easier and securest solution, IMO :-) Most secure - yes. Easiest - no - for this very reason. Let me give you an example - you have a server with you film and music collection, and you chose to share it using SSH. Windows users will have to copy files to their local machines each time they'd like to listen to music or watch a film. Not to mention a document which needs editing - copy from server to local machine, edit and upload it again. No direct access for Windows users is enough of a pain for me not to choose it for home, heterogeneous network. Another thing is encryption. Why would you need it on every file you access at home-only network? Again, for access - yes; not for sharing. The line between sharing and accessing is very thin. For instance, I have a samba share to which I access from my Debian boxes (meaning the samba share is not mounted locally but accessed via smb:// protocol). That's enough for me because I get/put files on the share sporadically. We're coming from different points of view. My preference over one NFS for unix only machines using one system mount over per user mounts comes indeed from enterprise where users' files are located on a server and accessed frequently. I still use that kind of setup at home for unix-only machines as I don't like to authenticate every time I need to access a file. I also use SSHFS (unix-only) accessing files over the Internet, and CIFS (unix, Windows) at home as it's better suited for that. I just had to do this to a machine I acquired maintenance of recently. It was quite out of date. The upgrade went fine. Yes, that's the same for openSUSE (e.g., you can jump to the next version, from 11.2 to 11.3 and then from 11.3 to 11.4). In openSUSE, long jumps in one run (from 11.2 to 11.4) is only supported by using the off-line upgrade procedure, by means of the DVD installation media, which is another nice option. What it is not supported in Debian (AFAIK) nor openSUSE is jumping two versions at a time. People might read the list's archive, so please don't write such careless generalisations. Yours is the careless generalisation. This was in reply to a specific poster and in answer to a specific question and was a very sensible suggestion. PCLinuxOS is a very good distro for someone switching from Windows, as the OP is. And the reply which occasioned your rudeness said that PCLinux is usually a good distro for a beginner, and I entirely agree. You say that you have not read the thread, so how come you are in a position to comment on someone's reply, especially to comment so rudely. If, in addition to not reading the thread, you have never seen PCLinuxOS, how on earth can you consider yourself qualified to have an opinion? Lisi Rude? Ok, I won't talk about this, but give a hint. A good Linux distro for beginners is a Linux distro with a huge community, IOW a distro that is used by many people and that comes with lot's of up to date forums, wikis etc., hence a good distro for beginners would be one of the major distros, any exotic distro in most cases isn't useful for a beginner. There are some exceptions, I e.g. already mentioned CNC and DAW. If a distro mimicries Windows it's completely bad for beginners, because this always leads to misunderstandings. Linux isn't Windows. Linux isn't a C64. Linux isn't ... Linux is Linux. I won't sound rude. IMO a beginner should use Ubuntu, Suse, Debian, Fedora ... those major distros are made for averaged users and they usually work OOTB. Especially Ubuntu has ggot a huge community with lot's of up to date wikis, forums etc.. IMO it isn't wise to recommend an exotic distro. YMMV. - Ralf I wouldn't call PCLinuxOS an exotic distro. Until recently it was number 5 on the most used Linux distro list. (I don't know where it is today.) It has a Forum that usually answers questions within hours. It works out of the box, with very minor tweaks--you probably want to unlock the widgits--icons to most people--so that you can move them around to suit yourself and add icons from the menu. If it looks quite a bit like Windows, that makes a lot of sense. Windows has developed from the original Xerox research over about 30 years, and everybody is used to it. (That may not be true for Win 8, but W8 is not here yet.) Just because some distros have gone bonkers with their screen displays doesn't mean everybody--or even anybody--has to like that nonsense. With the exception of the above writer, I haven't really heard anyone badmouth pclos. It's a great distro, and I've been using it for about 18 months now, having run from SuSE in 2010 after a batch of problems with it. I use the KDE version. I have looked at a number of other distros, including Debian--I don't like their politics; Ubuntu--there's one distro that believes that just because it's possible to do something, it should be done--also the devs seem to have done their absolute best (or worst) to make sure there's nothing reminiscent of Windows about it; Kubuntu--when I looked at it about a year ago, I puked, don't know what it looks like now, and don't care; Mint--very nice when I last looked; Zorin--also nice, and had the capability of looking very much like XP, if you wanted it to, or like Gnome 2. Most distros now have several desktops available: you may have to choose *before* you download the live version which one you want--or perhaps not, depending. Advice: get a live CD or DVD and try whatever you're thinking about using. See if you can add things that you want and have them work: *your* printer(s), your scanner, sound, both in headphones and on speakers, video--make sure that both sound and video work from whatever sources you normally use, including CDs, MP3s, YouTube, etc. Sound and video seem to be the weak points in some distros, so look carefully at them. Look especially for software that lets you run protected DVDs, if you're going to want to view them. (When I dumped SuSE, one of the reasons was that I never got a peep out of the speakers, no matter what the source, and all the answers on their list didn't help. That may be fixed, by now, but I'm not going back.) If you like to have the familiar icons of some common programs, see if the distro will let you do that, or only give you clones or imitations. Make sure that the pdf reader works, and that it prints properly to your standard size paper. You should be able to install Adobe Reader--some distros don't have it in the repo, and it may be a hassle to get it, if you want it. (There are FOSS readers; I like

If you have several wireless networks you can keep your interfaces file tidy and organised, not to mention that roaming mode won't work without wpa_supplicant.conf file. Yes, I'd agree with that; it gives a very flexible and powerful configuration, especially if wpagui is also used. However, if one has been stumbling along there is something to be said for walking before running. Keeping things in one place is a good practice IMHO. Security is another - /etc/network/interfaces is world readable by default. Better keep settings like passphrase or PSK in one, root readable file. I also recommend actual PSK rather than passphrase. I'm unsure of the advantage this brings as an ASCII passphrase is converted to a 64 hex string internally anyway. A disadvantage is passing an incomprehensible PSK on to someone to allow a connection to a network. Main advantage - you're not keeping your passphrase in clear text on your filesystem. PSK is precomputed from a passphrase for a specific SSID and passphrase cannot be quantified from it. There's no disadvantage as you can still use the passphrase, there's no need to pass the long PSK. Re: Sharing files on a local network

Only Windows system lacks for a ssh client on a default install and this can be easily solved with one of the mentioned programs that don't require even installation at all because they're portable. I was writing it with Windows in mind indeed. Okay, but the OP said he wanted to share files between Debian and Ubuntu so I guess the host will be a linux machine and clients a mix of windows, solaris and linux :-) If it doesn't play nicely with the system, then yes. I fully agree with that specific user case. Of course, if you want to share your music collection over your home network there are better ways to do it, even better than having to use a ssh volume ;-) But that was a bit specific and I was answering to a general question that was about sharing a set of files (the OP did not specified the nature of the files nor the purpose of the sharing) between two linux systems. In this scenario, using Nautilus or Konqueror or whatever file browser is availabe on the computers which support sftp://; protocol is the securest and easiest solution. Yes, but that's another different scenario. The OP did not mentioned something like enterprise or a specific needing (like printing from the windows client to the linux host, in such case samba can be also useful), just said share files between Debian and Ubuntu or maybe I missed something in the thread? I also use SSHFS (unix-only) accessing files over the Internet, and CIFS (unix, Windows) at home as it's better suited for that. For sharing a bunch of files in your home I still prefer ssh. I use it this way to put the backup files from the windows computers into the linux server that holds the files. Samba (and NFS) can be overwhelming, hard to setup and a true headache with perms and ownerships of the files. And is less secure. I have a couple of samba servers at work in two separated networks because we have a mix of linux and windows machines with real printers and virtual ones (one for PDF printouts and other for faxing) and here -in this situation- samba (nor NFS nor a SSH volume) does make sense. Re: alsa-tools update in Wheesy
A shot in the dark. If you run speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav 1. time while X is running would this be ok? No surround sound, just 2 channels! 2. What happens if you run it while X isn't used?
