Hi, I booted up my Debian unstable distro today only to find the cursor static in center of screen and no sound. Upon checking, the hardware is OK, but I cannot find /dev/mouse as specified in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and Mplayer gives me the message "audio setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: no such device" Upon checking, /dev/dsp proves to be missing. What is happening here ? Is this part of some unstable apt-upgrade/update transition ? Have others had the same problem ? I'd welcome any constructive advice. ltsp: cannot open devices '/dev/psaux' '/dev/mouse'
Hi, logging in as a user on the server I was given the choice an X or Gnome setup. I chose X and the mouse started to work intermittently and then died. Worse, when I rebooted into into the XP partition it was also stuck firmly in the center of the screen. Error messages include '(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/psaux, No such device' and '(EE) xf86OpenSerial: cannot open device /dev/mouse, No such file or directory'. The /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 looks OK, but I'm not sure if I should be looking for a /tmp/XF86Config-4 file. My current /tmp does not contain one. Looking at the filesystem, /dev/psaux exists, but /dev/mouse does not. Output from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 includes "(EE) PreInit failed for input device 'Generic Mouse' (II) Unload Module: 'mouse' (WW) No core pointer registered. No core pointer." I am writing this on the client machine. Any ideas ? This IntelliMouse has been good to me for a long time. I noticed the error message mentioned 'timeout' so I thought I'd let the system work it through. I watched the first half of 'Pearl Harbour' (not recommended) and came back to find the logon screen waiting for me. It's twice rebooted without problems since then. I put it down to software teething problems and the unexpected arrival of an upgrade which remembers the settings of the previous user session. It threw me for a while, but I'm impressed. Thunderbird 0.8 folder bug ?
I am not sure if this is a Debian or Thunderbird problem so I am posting to both lists. Having apt-upgraded to Thunderbird 0.8 I find the central pane completely blank so that I can not see the contents of my inbox, or of any other box or folder. It remains blank. I read the intro to the Thunderbird list explaining about the new Global Inbox and can't help wondering if this problem is not unconnected. I've closed and reopened Thunderbird a few times with no change - it seems to be more than a deb packaging issue. Adam Bogacki. Simultaneous mounting dvd & cdrw conflict
I'm confused about mounting dvd & cdrw drives.
I wish to (permanently ?) mount both so that I can play dvd's and also
burn audio from CD's in drive dvd.
However, it seems I can't mount both at the same time.

Run apt-get upgrade all the time and if packages are being kept back, run apt-get dist-upgrade afterwards and have a close look at what APT wants to do. You have given me the encouragement and incentive I needed to upgrade the kernel (again) via 'apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.5-1-686' although I will probably first resize partitions to avoid space problems I encountered last time. I'll have to read up on static compiling but I'm glad to hear that "everything just worked first time". Adam, I have not followed this thread and I'm not sure if you have a reason not to make the jump, but I just upgraded to 2.6.5 kernel and was concerned about getting alsa working. Thanks, I've printed and read the Tux:/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt#vi Alsa-sound document, and read the stuff and when I follow their advice the modules compile but the process keeps breaking down at a certain point. The good news is that I think I understand more about what is going on and the breakdown is further along the track - I realised [depmod -ae] the "unresolved symbols" all had to do with pcmcia so I apt-installed that .deb and that problem ceased. 'dmesg' tells me I have the es1371 card and 'alsa-project.org' tells me I need the snd-ens13711 module. I apt-installed kernel-image-2.4.25-1-686 and alsa-modules-2.4.25-1-686 (& kernel-headers). The clue is at the bottom of your message. You havn't configured any sound card! Read the install guide or just try insmod snd-x where is your card. Alsa-modules deb-packaging problem ?
Apologies for cross-posting but this is relevant to Debian and ALSA. In trying to configure alsa modules with soundcard es1371 it seemed apparent that kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4 would not support 'alsa-modules-2.4.25-1-686'. I thought this the origin of the error messages below. After apt-installing 'kernel-image-2.4.25-1-686' I still get them. If it is not a kernel clash, it must be a debian packaging issue. At the moment I get video but not audio on working Mplayer links. Fixing this depends on a successful alsa-modules install. This must be a simple maintainer fix. Mplayer lacking sound
Hi, I've noticed
that my mozilla mplayer plugin
shows video but lacks audio. I've downloaded and installed
all available codecs in /home/adam/.mplayer/codecs
with no change. I've easily played MP3's via XMMS,
so it's not hardware.
Starting mplayer in text mode as root gives me

'~/.mplayer/config' takes precedence but the default config
for the input system is '~/.mplayer/input.conf'
The example '~/.mplayer/config' in 'man mplayer'
EXAMPLE:

does not show me how to proceed in my

If te package file /var/lib/dpkg/status really is messed up, not much is going to work. Do you still have a file in /var/lib/dpkg/status-old ? If so, make a copy of it in some safe place (and also of any messed-up /var/lib/dpkg/status file), and then maybe try cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status and run again. OO 1.1.0 crashing ...
Hi, I've had problem with OO 1.1.0 but have not seen it referred to on this list. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ openoffice brings up OO 1.1 but trying to open a new document, master document, text document (most of them), HTML, drawing or spreadsheet initially bring it up followed by the pop-up message ~~ \!/ An unrecoverable error has occurred. All modified files have been saved and can probably be recovered at program restart. ~~ after which it crashes. Emailed text attachments get the same treatment, meaning that I can't read important documents. I've looked under Tools->Options but can't see any obvious mis-config. English-NZ, English-AUS, and English-US don't change anything. I notice that under Options->Paths->[whatever] you get /home/adam/OO/1.0.2/[whatever] Could that be the problem ? In other words, configs are not up-to-date ? I'm running unstable and 'apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-missing' via cable almost daily (congestion allowing) but the problem has persisted for the last few weeks ... leading to some angst. SA/mutt problem
Hi, when I use 'X' to invoke a SpamAssassin scan in Mutt I get razor2 report failed: Can't locate object method "new" via package "Razor2::Client::Agent" at /usr/share/perl5/Mail/SpamAssassin/Reporter.pm line 168. Press any key to continue... This seems to be a Perl problem. The output of 'spamassassin -D' is below. My other problem is that I have not been able to get procmail automatically putting mail into designated folders - necessary for creating 'ham', 'spam', and 'trash' folders. Ironically, ever since my ISP beefed up its spam defences after 'Swen', I may not be getting enough spam to train SA. I'd be grateful for any assistance with getting SA working, and with fixing the procmail-folder problem. GNOME Settings Daemon error
Hi, trying to login today I found myself looking at a blank screen and the message "There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The Settings Daemon restarted too many times. The last error message was: Failed to activate 'OAFID:GNOME_Settings Daemon' Gnome will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you try to log in" -- I did an 'apt-get update' in console mode followed by an 'apt-get -f -u dist-upgrade --fix-missing' which installed a new gnome-terminal, and then 'reboot -n' and found myself with the GUI working but all GNOME fonts very tiny. I've had this trouble before but not this extent - GNOME fonts first changed to thick black (which I thought was due to 'gnome-accessibility-themes') then thin and spidery, and I've received some verison of the OAFID error message before. I've been having trouble with ugrading GNOME things due to a broken /file-roller/ pkg. When I try 'dpkg --configure' I get the following msg (below). ***I've filed a bug report at GNOME but nothing has changed*** Any ideas ? It's a bit panful to be looking at extremely tiny font. AfterStep install probs NEARLY solved...
Hi, I moved my untarred themes from ~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/themes to /home/adam/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/themes and clicked on 'Start-->Desktop-->Update StartMenu' when they showed in the 'Desktop-->Theme' menu but clicking on the theme directoriess just shows me the sub-files and does not change AfterStep themes. Hi,
(1) Is this correct ? Apparently there are only two files
in each Blackbox tarball - background image and style files.
Yet for my system ...
Tux:~/.blackbox# ls
backgrounds menu styles
and 'bbconf' cannot find the 'style' directory.
Any ideas ?

Is there a wmakerconf type program for blackbox ? I've got four themes in ~/.blackbox in either /background or /style' files, have run genmenu on blackbox - but there is no sign of them in the menu when I restart blackbox. Yay ! It works ! I had some trouble with themes not installing correctly - I often had to manually put files into their individual directories and some simply did not work when installed. Also, wmakerconf kept crashing. Once I had manually (!) deleted them I slept on it and this morning ran /genmenu/, then /wmakerconf/ - and it worked ! To make it even sweeter, the WMaker menu updates from Geir Thorstein Kristiansen's (gtk's) website also worked. Now to get Mutt going again ... Thanks guys, Adam Bogacki, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Rodney D. Not a good idea, too many bad things can happen, If you run as a "normal' user, the worse that can happen, is just screwing up one account, your way is to mess the whole system. If it does not find your program(s), then from the shell type "which application(s)", and note the path. From within wmakerconf, find the "folder" you want your application(s) to be stored in, and click add, then copy/paste your application(s) there. Hmmm... I've read (& shamelessly borrowed) your configs and commented/uncommented everything in favour of Maildir in .procmailrc & .muttrc and when, as user, I try mutt I get "---Mutt: (no mailbox) [Msgs:0]---(threads/date)-(all)---/home/adam/Maildir/ is not a mailbox." The only thing I can think of is that I had created /home/adam/Maildir but when I deleted it because it was empty, mutt told me "/home/adam/Maildir does not exist, shall I create it ?" - I said 'yes'. However, this is not the same as "home/adam/Maildir/ is not a mailbox". I'm confused & tired & need an early night. Any constructive insights will be appreciated. Thanks Rodney, I've been playing around with wmakerconf and easily managed to install the default debian menu which is at least a step forward in usability. However I still cannot install my downloaded themes. One problem with the above is that copy/pasting only works between similar (in my case Gnome) terminals and wmakerconf does not use standard terminals. Thanks Rodney. I tried running 'genmenu' as root but Tux replied 'no such program'. I tried apt-installing it (Debian unstable) but received the message 'cannot find program'. Where does one source 'genmenu'. Should I add something to /etc/apt/sources.list ? WindowMaker 'applications' menu SNAFU ...
Sorry for the WWII jargon but I've installed some themes into ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Themes but the 'applications' menu does not show any. In fact it has not been working at all in this WM installation, but has not troubled me until now. Any ideas out there ? 'Non-empty' directory deletion.
Hi, I'm trying to delete /home/adam/.enlightenment/themes/FossilsOfTheMachines but I can't get 'rmdir' to work on a full directory. Neither rmdir -r [filename] rmdir s [filename] /or/ rmdir --ignore-non-empty-directory [filename] ... work. What am I missing here ? Mplayer codecs, 'Face' error.
Hi,
(1) Writing 'Mplayer' as user I get
"Can't open '/home/adam/.mplayer/codecs.conf' No such file or directory"
I've downloaded the Mplayer codecs file from the home page but it is
currently
in /home/adam ... that's not the same as setting up a conf file.
(2) Mplayer now handles all my MP3's (tough, I'd enjoyed installing
those sexy
XMMS skins) but the video component crashes with the message:
Error: "New_Face failed. Maybe the font path is wrong. Please supply the
text font file
("/.mplayer/subfont.ttf)".
Any leads ?

Mutt moping: folders not working.
Hi, I set up my latest Mutt six months ago but mail from a number of
high-volume lists
[including debian-user-digest] floods into my inbox and takes much too
long to process.
I've tried various things, consulted oracles, but nix. The one thing
that occurs to me
is that when my previous dual-boot system (Win98/Deb unstable) became
unstable, I set up my next (WinXP/Deb unstable) with my old one
('Cyberia') mounted within the new one ('Tux'). Could too many
'.procmails' be confusing Mutt ?

I had a NetGear 10-100 PCI Ethernet Card FA310TX from EverythingLinux installed hoping at some stage in the future to network my cabled machine with one other but have not got around to it. When the techie saw it he plugged the cable into it and it immediately worked on the XP drive which is all he was concerned with. www.paradise.net.nz is an ISP run by TelstraClear, formed from a merger of Telstra NZ and Clear Communications, but essentially the (loss-making) Telstra operation in NZ. Over here, it is in the position of taking on a monopolist and has to be more aggressive and entrepreneurial and has succeeded in taking on the mantle of the "good guys". Their Xmas offer waived installation fees, but technically their operation should be similar to Telstra. It does not officially support Linux ... At the moment I am just trying to get Woody working with cable; a gateway might be considered later. I'm not sure if the machine had a pre-existing network card - it is the standard setup and since XP is configured for networking that may be the case. Hi, I’m running Woody testing/unstable in a dual boot-system and have recently had 512Bd cable installed. The XP drive is fine but I can’t seem to get it going with Woody. I apt-get installed linuxconf via ppp, read through the help files as suggested, and added in all known values for DNS Servers, IP (Static), Gateway, and SubNet mask. I did not see anywhere to include network settings for pop3 or smtp (presumably to go in ./muttrc and Mozilla). Service samba is not running Executing: /etc/rc2.d/S20samba start’ My /etc/resolv.conf is ‘search paradise.net.nz nameserver 203.96.152.4 203.96.152.12’ my /etc/networks is “localnet 192.168.1.0 eth0_netmask 255.255.255.0” which confuses me – where did that DNS come from ? my IP is 203.79.110.81 Similarly my /etc/hosts had (last time I looked) three different designations for my system (Tux): 127.0.0.1 Localhost 192.168.1.1 Tux 203.79.110.81 Tux loghost … I presume these have been calculated by Linuxconf. I received the linuxconf message “forwarding of IP traffic is not active in the kernel” and trying an apt-get update still gives me “something wicked happened resolving ‘mirror.aarnet.edu.au:http’ Sorry for the confusion – any solutions ? Hi, Mutt goes into w3m when I open a HTML attachment, but when I hit 'M' to launch Mozilla, GKrellm shows the CPU operating at 99% ... but no Mozilla. I hit 'o' for the option menu and replaced the external viewer option with '/home/adam/.mozilla' ... where is the error ? Hi, I find that I get 48 'xdaliclocks' and 14 'xvidtunes' opening up when I start a session in Gnome 1.4 ... at first it was amusing but I have not been able to stop this either by using the 'kill' or 'close' commands in task manager, or by closing each window individually. At least the numbers are not increasing any more and the files are not very large. In a previous RH install I had StarOffice 5.2 doing the same, but the numbers kept increasing ... 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 15 copies of Star Office opening up until RH became so unstable that I, perhaps unfairly, gave up on it and switched to Debian. I did have those apps open previously. Are they being opened now because I possibly did not close them before doing a 'poweroff' ? And how does one stop the current behaviour ? Installing OpenOffice
Hi, I thought that installing OpenOffice would follow Star Office 5.2 : '/mnt/cdrom/linux/office52/setup ' but after mounting the CDRom I find 'Cyberia:/mnt/cdrom# ls binaries odk ppc solver source ' which does not seem to fit the /pathname/setup format. Hi, I have successfully installed 'task-ximian-gnome' but when I try 'apt-get install evolution' I consistently end up with a complete or near 100% download - time and size depending on line congestion - and the message "Failed to fetch http://red-carpet.ximian.com/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-i386/evolution_1.0.2-ximian.1_i386.deb MD5Sum mismatch" I am not quite sure what this refers to, although I am familiar with CRC 's during downloads. I am also not sure if this relates to attempts to "apt-get install evolution" before I successfully installed 'task-ximian-gnome'. Any Enlightenment would be appreciated. dpkg reconfigure Virtual->Monitor screen size.
Hi, I've been recommended to use 'dpkg -reconfigure xserver-xfree' in order to sync virtual and monitor screen sizes. However, doing so gives me the message " "xserver-xfree86" is not installed or does not use debconf" What would be the correct item to enter in the "dpkg -reconfigure" command ? Latest *stable* 2.4.x kernel ?
Hi, I apt-downloaded the 2.4.14 kernel and all seemed to go well for two sessions before it crashed and I cannot login beyond a low runlevel. Ker 2.2.x would not recognise the Promise controller on which my removable HD was mounted so a 2.4.x ker was needed. I have worked around the problem by physically moving the empty drive to a PCI slot on the first controller and installed 2.2r4 ... which leaves the problem of rescuing the corrupted drive. I've found - just as I proposed demonstrating Debian to a friend
- that the lettering [fonts] on the Gnome panel and sub-menus and the
tool-tip Evolution menus have been replaced by rectangles.
I'm not sure what caused this but it might have something to do
with using 'apt-get install' on 'xfonts-75dpi', xfonts-100dpi',
'xfonts-base' and 'xfonts-scalable' ... I thought it would be a good
idea to have them on my system in case of need.
Is there a conflict here ? More to the point, is there an easy
fix ?

Hi, after almost a year of use I find that the fonts on my Gnome panels and sub-menus has been replaced by rectangles made of dots. The rest of the OS appears to be operating normally. Has anyone come across this ... and knows how to fix it ? Adam Bogacki, Sydney. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sorry, I'd like to take back the last message. It has just printed the CUPS 'Printer Test Page' successfully. I was impressed at how easy it was to install. I was wrestling with an altogether different problem and tried it as a diversion - and it worked. That problem, BTW, is that I am trying to install 2.2r4 onto a removable 40Gb drive in a system which already has a 20Gb Win 98 drive and a 10Gb 2.2r2 unstable installation, in other words /dev/hda and /dev/hdb. I had no similar problem installing /dev/hdb which - from memory - was auto-recognised by the system. The same is not happening to what should be /dev/hdc ... What am I missing here ? Hmmm ... since I posted the message below I've installed cupsys [although the command 'cupsys' as root did not seem to work; what am I missing here ?] and running 'lpc status all' gives me the response "waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)" 'man lp' showed me the 'lp int ioctl' command to reset the printer but when I tried it I received the response "lp: command not found". I'm sure there is a simple solution here but I can't see it. Any advice, O Wise Ones ? lpc: conflicting informnation.
Hi, I'm getting conflicting info in trying to get my printer going again. The following was done as root ... # lpc start all lp: printing enabled daemon started # lpc status all lp: queuing is enabled printing is enabled no entries no daemon present Apparently, with the 'start' command the daemon is started but with the 'status' command immediately afterward it is not present. Thanks. I've had a look a CUPS but trying 'apt-get install cups' gives me a response along the lines that there is no such package. Has it been debianised ? Yep, I'm having the same problem. I'm running an EPSON Stylus Photo 700 under woody using printtool (which I thought had conflicted with LPRng when I tried to install what 'Debian Unleashed', 2000, described as "Debian's native printing model") ... If it is as simple as changing /dev/lp1 t /dev/lp0 it is worth trying.
