Downgrading to dfsg.1-1 solved the issue.

Hello,

Changing GTK2 shortcuts...

2003-11-30 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hello,

I am trying to change my GTK2 apps shortcuts just as I used to
with GTK1 apps (namely Gimp, now trying to work with gimp1.3).

I've modified the /desktop/gnome/interface/can_change_accels key
in gconf, but it does not work. I've also tried to set
gtk-can-change-accels=1 in a ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (even if deprecated)
but without success.

Do I miss something? Is it still working?

By the way, when trying to talk to gconf from the command-line, I
get errors:

$ gconftool -g /desktop/gnome/interface/can_change_accels
Failed to get value for
`/desktop/gnome/interface/can_change_accels':
Failed to contact configuration server (a likely cause of this is
that you have an existing configuration server (gconfd) running,
but it isn't reachable from here - if you're logged in from two
machines at once, you may need to enable TCP networking for ORBit)

Any ideas?

I am using Gnome 2.4 (sid)

What happens (more precisely) is as follows:

- addresses start syncing, then hang (no special CPU activity,

- if I try to end the gpilotd process, it will then jump tp full
CPU-use (95% and up)

- I have to kill gpilotd

- only the first 3 addresses are visible in evolution

I am using SID.

Gnome 2 fonts : weird behaviour in SID

2003-07-01 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hello there,

I have recently switched to SID to take advantage of the latest
Gnome 2.2 desktop, being tired to wait for it to go in Sarge.

I am impressed by SID, I wish I had switched before :-)

I have a small problem in understanding how the fonts work in
Gnome 2.2 : when I set the Terminal Font in the Fonts
preferences, I do not see what impact it has on the desktop.

Let's suppose I choose a weird font as Terminal Font, such as
Nimbus Mono L. Then where should I see an impact? My terminal
is not affected by that, nor vim (which seems to use the
Monospace font, whatever choice I make in the preferences).

I am confused here.

Many thanks,

xauth au su - issue

2003-06-24 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hello,

I am trying to allow access to my X server to anyone connected
locally on my machine. I know that I can xhost + to allow
unlimited connections, but I've read about the file /etc/X0.hosts
which may contain the list of allowed hosts to access display :0

So I've created a /etc/X0.hosts file, which contains the entry
localhost. OK, fine.

But now, when I am in an xterm as my standard user, and type in
su -, then export DISPLAY=:0, I always get error messages :
Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
Error: Can't open display: :0.0

The only way to avoid that is to issue a xhost + before suing.

It works fine with simple su, but I need to have a login shell.

Is it a bug? What do I miss?

I am running Sarge.

Thank you,

Dominique

PS : I already know about ssh -X -l whoever localhost, my
question is about this xhost issue.

Re: Can not get UDMA-100 working... SOLVED !!!

2003-01-28 Thread Dominique Deleris

Thanks to anyone for your feedback. Yes, the cable is connected
correctly to the MB (blue connector), and to the drive (black
connector, since drive is alone). I had also tried `hdparm -X69
/dev/hda` without success. And when I was getting the drive
working correctly, then the day after, at machine startup, it
would again ignore the UDMA-100 mode.

In fact, this seems to be caused by the kernel itself: I've
checked in the linux-kernel mailing list archives, and found out
that other people had the same problems with the Promise stuff.

To solve this, just add idex=ata66 to the kernel parameters in
lilo or grub (where x is the ID of the HDD on which to force
UDMA-66/100): it will bypass cable detection and force UDMA-100 mode.

Now everything is working fine :-)

Thanks again to everybody.

Cheers,

Dominique

Desktop icons in Gnome 1.4 (woody)

2001-11-28 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hi everyone...

I'm using Gnome 1.4 + Sawfish from Woody. When I create a new
shortcut on the desktop, I can't customize its icon...

Let me be more precise:
- when dragging an icon from the panel to the desktop, its icon
is (1) changed a default one and (2) I can not change it
- when trying to Recreate default icons from the Gnome desktop
menu, they effectively are created, but I can not change the
displayed icon

Does anybody have an idea ?

Cheers,

HD spin down with hdparm : HD always wakes up !!!

2001-11-14 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hello folks !

I am now in the process to reduce power consumption on my Woody
box (great, isn't it?) So far I've managed to get DPMS working so
that my monitor will go to standby mode when I'm AFK.

Now the question: I have two HD, /dev/hda and /dev/hdc that are
mounted as follows:

Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda2 7384424 1895048 5114260 28% /
/dev/hda3 3075536 1283008 1636296 44% /usr/local
/dev/hdc2 3909084 2509760 1200748 68% /home
/dev/hda1 9428928 5506328 3922600 59% /windows

At boot time I have the following commands executed:
hdparm -S 180 /dev/hda
hdparm -S 180 /dev/hdc
so that my two HDs will go to sleep after 15 min.

Everything is fine with /dev/hdc (/home), but /dev/hda will
always wake up after a few seconds of sleep !

I can't figure out what's provoking this behaviour?

  Pedro,

You should download NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-.tar.gz from NVidia's
  website (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux), and execute
as root (once extracted) the following order:

  make install

This will update the needed /usr/lib/libGL* files with NVidia's.

Also after a kernel recompile you should do the same with
  package NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-.tar.gz

  Hope this helps...

I always use apt-get install x, or the magic couple

Only from time to time do I do a apt-get dselect-upgrade, just to
make sure everything is OK. But I never use dselect (absolutely
not user-friendly) : I've just used it today first time (to
remove an installation candidate libmysqlclient6 that was not OK

HP Deskjet 959C + PCL codes (w/ apsfilter)

2001-04-26 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hello people !

I have a problem printing plain ASCII text to my printer:
at the end of the printing job, the continue button is
blinking, as long as I don't hit it.

I am using apsfilter CVS version, and I have set up RECODE
options as follows:
RAW_PROLOGUE='\033k2G\033l2E\033a2L\033(s1Q'
RAW_EPILOGUE='\033l1H'
meaning that these escape codes are sent to the printer
before and after the file to be printed.

I've tried to replace \033l1H by \014 in RAW_EPILOGUE,
but it does not change anything.

Is there a PCL champion of the world in the mailing list
contributors ?

Thanks for your help and advices !

Dominique

 You might try
\033l0H#eject page
 (esc el zero H)
 or
\033E\033%-12345X# printer reset and universal language exit

Both options have no effect.

Any idea ?

I'd really like to have a fast, rough text printer (converting ASCII to PS
before printing is simply to slow :-(

I would like to know what is it that you like so much about
Emacs+Gnus? I am not trying to be sarcastic or something like that.
I have tried to configure gnus a few times for using with email and
found it a frustration to get working.
Well, configuring gnus is not straightforward. I really appreciate the
following book : Teach yourself Emacs in 24 hours, by Jesper Pedersen,
SAMS Publishing (ISBN 0-672-31594-7, http://www.blackie.dk/emacs/).
2 chapters are dedicated to gnus and its configuration, and (in a few hours)
you have your gnus configured for email and news.

In which ways would gnus be better than mutt and pine for example?
Maybe I never saw it working properly.
I can't answer you since I don't know anything about mutt or pine.
I just know that some people like them. I only used evolution (latest
snapshots), balsa, and mozilla mail. Emacs + Gnus is DEFINITELY my
favourite (all the power of Emacs...)

I like emacs and use it regularly, but could never understand why the
gnus users are so enthusiastic about using gnus for mail.
Well, see above :-)

Apsfilter for HP Deskjet 959C

2001-04-24 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hello,

Does anybody have an experience with the setup of apsfilter with a DJ 959C
printer ?

I use the following :
gs 5.50 compiled with driver hpijs 0.95 from HP
apsfilter 6.0.0

I'd like to setup a rought ascii printer, a normal mode (say 300x300 color),
and a photo-quality mode.

Thanks for your help. It already took me 2 days to have my driver compiled,
I would certainly appreciate to be able to use it perfectly :-)

Re: where to find ttmkfdir?

2001-04-23 Thread Dominique Deleris
Here's what I do when I want new True Type fonts :

1. Download TrueType font
2. Convert all font file names to lowercase (important)
3. Copy .ttf file in dans /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
4. Generate fonts.dir : mkttfdir -e (Debian package utils/fttools)
5. Re-start font server : /etc/init.d/xfs restart

Works fine...

Re: Compiling ghostscript 5.50 on woody : HELP !!!

2001-04-23 Thread Dominique Deleris
Thanks a lot !

I finally succeeded compiling ghostscript painless, thanks to you ;-)

Now I have another (hopefully final) problem : when setting my printer
with printtool, and trying to print ASCII test to it, nothing happens.

I know that configuring my /etc/printcap with magicfilterconfig is OK,
but then I don't have access to my newly compiled driver...

I've seen that you are the package maintainer for printtool, so I guess
you're the right person to ask :)

Thanks for your help.

Compiling ghostscript 5.50 on woody : HELP !!!

2001-04-22 Thread Dominique Deleris
Hello there...

I bought a brand new printer yesterday (HP deskjet 959C), and
I am now trying to install the latest HP drivers (yes they now
provide drivers for linux)...

The problem is that I have to compile ghostscript from source.

Question : does anybody have succeeded in this ? It's a real
pain in the ass ! :-(

Here's what I do :

1. download sources for ghostscript 5.50 from unstable (sid)
and ghostscript site
gnu-gs-5.50jpeg.tar.gz
gnu-gs-5.50libpng.tar.gz
gnu-gs-5.50zlib.tar.gz
gnu-gs-fonts-other-5.50.tar.gz
gnu-gs-fonts-std-5.50.tar.gz
gs_5.50-6.diff.gz
gs_5.50.orig.tar.gz

2. Extract sources and patch them with debian patch (diff file)
in gs/gs5.50

3. Extract additional libs and respect directory hierarchy
gs
¦__libjpeg
¦__gs5.50
¦__zlib
¦__libpng
¦__obj

4. go to gs5.50 directory and make

Result :
make: gdevx.c: Command not found
make: *** [gdevx.o] Error 127

What can I do ??? I already spent one day trying to compile
this piece of s :-((

Please help me
